How Car Engines Work

­Have you ever opened the hood of your car and wondered what was going on in there? A car engine can look like a big confusing jumble of metal, tubes and wires to the uninitiated.

You might want to know what’s going on simply out of curiosity. Or perhaps you are buying a new car, and you hear things like 3.0 liter V-6 and dual overhead cams and tuned port fuel injection . What does all ­of that mean?

­­In this article, we’ll discuss the basic idea behind an engine a­nd then go into detail about how all the pieces fit together, what can go wrong and how to increase performance.

­The purpose of a gasoline car engine is to convert gasoline into motion so that your car can move. Currently the easiest way to create motion from gasoline is to burn the gasoline inside an engine. Therefore, a car engine is an internal combustion engine — combustion takes place internally.

Two things to note:

  • There are different kinds of internal combustion engines. Diesel engines are one form and gas turbine engines are another. See also the articles on HEMI engines. rotary engines and two-stroke engines. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
  • There is such a thing as an external combustion engine. A steam engine in old-fashioned trains and steam boats is the best example of an external combustion engine. The fuel (coal, wood, oil, whatever) in a steam engine burns outside the engine to create steam, and the steam creates motion inside the engine. Internal combustion is a lot more efficient (takes less fuel per mile) than external combustion, plus an internal combustion engine is a lot smaller than an equivalent external combustion engine. This explains why we don’t see any cars from Ford and GM using steam engines.

When people think of automobile performance, they normally think of horsepower. torque and zero-to-60 acceleration. But all of the power generated by a piston engine is useless if the driver can’t control the car. That’s why automobile engineers turned their attention to the suspension system almost as soon as they had mastered the four-stroke internal combustion engine.

If a road were perfectly flat, with no irregularities, suspensions wouldn’t be necessary. But roads are far from flat. Even freshly paved highways have subtle imperfections that can interact with the wheelsВ­ of a car. It’s these imperfections that apply forces to the wheels. According to Newton’s laws of motion, all forces have both magnitude and direction. A bump in the road causes the wheel to move up and down perpendicular to the road surface. The magnitude, of course, depends on whether the wheel is striking a giant bump or a tiny speck. Either way, the car wheel experiences a vertical acceleration as it passes over an imperfection.

Without an intervening structure, all of wheel’s vertical energy is transferred to the frame, which moves in the same direction. In such a situation, the wheels can lose contact with the road completely. Then, under the downward force of gravity. the wheels can slam back into the road surface. What you need is a system that will absorb the energy of the vertically accelerated wheel, allowing the frame and body to ride undisturbed while the wheels follow bumps in the road.

The study of the forces at work on a moving car is called vehicle dynamics. and you need to understand some of these concepts in order to appreciate why a suspension is necessary in the first place. Most automobile engineers consider the dynamics of a moving car from two perspectives:

  • Ride – a car’s ability to smooth out a bumpy road
  • Handling – a car’s ability to safely accelerate, brake and corner

These two characteristics can be further described in three important principles – road isolation. road holding and cornering. The table below describes these principles and how engineers attempt to solve the challenges unique to each.

From that early era to today, cars have been a natural target for thieves: They are valuable, reasonably easy to resell and they have a built-in getaway system. Some studies claim that a car gets broken into every 20 seconds in the United States alone.

In light of this startling statistic, it’s not surprising that millions of Americans have invested in expensive alarm systems. Today, it seems like every other car is equipped with sophisticated electronic sensors, blaring sirens and remote-activation systems. These cars are high-security fortresses on wheels!

In this article, we’ll look at modern car alarms to find out what they do and how they do it. It’s amazing how elaborate modern car alarms are, but it’s even more remarkable that car thieves still find a way to get past them.

The Basics

If you want to think about a car alarm in its simplest form, it is nothing but one or more sensors connected to some sort of siren. The very simplest alarm would have a switch on the driver’s door, and it would be wired so that if someone opened the door the siren would start wailing. You could implement this car alarm with a switch, a couple of pieces of wire and a siren.

Most modern car alarm systems are much more sophisticated than this. They consist of:

  • An array of sensors that can include switches, pressure sensors and motion detectors
  • A siren. often able to create a variety of sounds so that you can pick a distinct sound for your car
  • A radio receiver to allow wireless control from a key fob
  • An auxiliary battery so that the alarm can operate even if the main battery gets disconnected
  • A computer control unit that monitors everything and sounds the alarm — the brain of the system

The brain in most advanced systems is actually a small computer. The brain’s job is to close the switches that activate alarm devices — your horn, headlights or an installed siren — when certain switches that power sensing devices are opened or closed. Security systems differ mainly in which sensors are used and how the various devices are wired into the brain.

The brain and alarm features may be wired to the car’s main battery. but they usually have a backup power source as well. This hidden battery kicks in when somebody cuts off the main power source (by clipping the battery cables, for example). Since cutting the power is a possible indication of an intruder, it triggers the brain to sound the alarm.

How Sports Cars Work

Here is your chance to climb behind the wheels of some of the fastest and most innovative sports cars ever built.

When the automobile sputtered to life in the late 1880s, the sports car wasn’t far behind. Briggs Cunningham, the storied American sports-car builder of the 1950s, once declared that in the beginning every car was a sports car, because they weren’t practical or particularly useful on a day-to-day basis.

Then, starting in 1913, one Henry Ford made the motorcar itself universal by using a moving assembly line to crank out his simple Model T with unheard-of speed in unheard-of numbers. Competition and free enterprise did the rest. Soon, most anyone who wanted a car could afford one.

It was in this heady, fast-paced era of technical innovation and industrial growth that the sports car began to emerge as something beyond mere transportation. As pioneer American auto journalist Ken Purdy explained it: The automobile had tremendous appeal for the sportsman of the [early 1900s]: It was the fastest vehicle at man’s bidding, it was new, much about it was unknown. It offered a great challenge.

To the manufacturers, turning out perhaps a few score automobiles a year, racing was the best kind of advertising. Because it was a brand-new sport, the newspapers gave it extensive news coverage, and the manufacturer whose car won an important race on Saturday could be sure of a full order book the following Monday evening. In short, the first racing cars were also the first sports cars. They’ve been close cousins ever since.

Good or bad, the sports car evolved up to World War II as a creature mainly of Europe and England, not the U.S. Though motorsports remained very popular on both sides of the Atlantic, the topography and economic conditions over there tended to breed sportier cars with the defining attributes of quick acceleration, agile handling, and strong brakes. It seemed, that sports cars were thriving.

Then the Depression hit. Smaller companies perished, and the larger U.S. automakers adopted emergency survival measures — none of which included sports cars. With the start of a terrible new world war, some thought the sports car as good as dead.

But the pundits were wrong again. Liberated by unpredecented prosperity in the early postwar years, some Americans began rejecting homegrown automotive values for cars that looked good and were actually fun to drive. Though no one knew it at the time, a revolution was underway. The sports car was about to captivate America as never before.
