Phil Crawford has been a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser for over 15 years. He is a third generation real estate appraiser following his father and grandfather. He is 42 years old and owns an appraisal and title company. He is part of a “new generation” of real estate appraisers that are determined to protect the appraisal profession from corruption, intimidation and destruction. He is an independent fee appraiser, and works in the field every day.

He does NOT belong to any appraisal organization. He is truly independent.

Paul Mahler, Chief Executive Officer and Founder

To say that Paul is a business systems architect is an understatement. He has worked in the computer and telecommunications industries for over 40 years creating systems for telecommunications, networking, security, VoIP, systems integration and cloud computing. As a specialist in the architecture and implementation of mission-critical business systems, Paul is proficient in relational databases, entity relationship modeling, agile development and large-scale business system integration, as well as UML and model driven architectures. His clients have included AT T, Pacific Bell, Verizon and Visa.

Paul began his career in Silicon Valley as the founder of Horizon Software systems, one of the very first software applications developer for the UNIX operating system. He has worked as an engineer and manager for companies including Cisco, Google, Charles Schwab, Verizon, Wells Fargo, Kaiser Foundation, Visa, PacBell, Informix, Oracle, DHL, Lawrence Labs and venture capital startups. Early in his career, Paul was a rocket scientist for NASA using the Navier–Stokes equations for computational modeling and computer animation of hypersonic fluid flows through de laval nozzles.

He is the author of several books about telecommunication systems, including VoIP Telephony with Asterisk (Signate, 2004) the first comprehensive guide to Asterisk as well as computer languages, relational database theory and practice, programming environments, and client-server technology. He has also published a wide variety of computer articles, manuals and technical briefs.

Paul has a B.A. at honors from the University of California-Berkeley in Philosophy of Science. He completed four years in the Ph.D. program of Biophysics at Berkeley and the graduate program of Medical Information Sciences at the University of California-San Francisco.

Paul is an avid reader, writer, horseman, and overall techie. He is a member of the San Mateo County Mounted Patrol, holds a Professional Peace Officers Certification through the State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.), engages in the philosophical sciences and history and enjoys his farm with his wife, three horses and countless dogs.

Steve Futrell, Executive Vice President

Steve has over 30 years of experience developing and delivering communication technology solutions for the hospitality industry, specifically on-premise and cloud-based PBX design, wired and wireless HSIA (high-speed internet access) solutions, video over IP, DSL, and IPTV (internet protocol television) solutions.

Steve has a broad background in engineering management, telecommunications, and system design. Prior to joining Voice Carrier, he was the co-founder of Blue Mountain Software where they pioneered new hosted telecom systems for the hospitality industry. The company filed patents on a new system with a variable-cost model in which hotels only pay for phone service on a per-room basis when occupied. The company also developed a Find-Me Follow-Me system that provides hotel guests VoIP to the room service from any hotel room in the world. Blue Mountain built a base of 800+ hotels and was sold in 2005.

During his eleven years as design engineer at Hitachi America’s PBX Division, Steve was responsible for developing hardware and software, as well as writing PMS interface code. His specialties include converged network design and internet protocol television (IPTV) implementation.

A graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology, Steve has earned a reputation for solving and assisting the most complex and challenging hotel technology issues.

    Interactive Voice Response Testing

    Database Systems Corp. (DSC) has been a leading provider of call processing solutions and computer software since 1978. DSC specializes in the development of automated phone solutions which feature interactive voice response (IVR) applications.

    What Is IVR Testing?

      IVR testing is a key element within a new IVR design process. Testing involves not just the functioning of the IVR program but also how well the IVR program performs under stress and error conditions.

    IVR Test Plan Considerations

    An IVR development project requires the thorough testing of the application prior to its installation in a live environment. The following are different test processes that need to be considered when constructing a test plan for an IVR installation:

    • IVR Program Flow Test – Are all of the IVR phone key paths fully functional? Is the user directed to the proper response when a phone key response is entered?
    • IVR Voice Recordings Verfication – This step requires that every voice recording that is played to the user is fully functional and plays the complete message as designed.
    • IVR Error Condition Tests – If the user hits the wrong phone key, how does the IVR respond? Is the error message played to the user sufficiently clear and does the user know how to proceed?
    • Database Access Test – Does the IVR retrieve the proper information over the network or from the internet. Are there failsafe procedures in place to ensure the proper information is accessible?
    • Disabled Communications Test – If a communications breakdown occurs during any phase of the IVR process, is the user given an appropriate warning and does the IVR recover properly from a transaction update?
    • Text To Speech Test – Does the text to speech converter work properly with the supplied information retrieved? How does the converter respond under heavy usage?
    • Database Update Test – During an IVR transaction, is the information submitted by the user properly updated in the database? Is the data saved and readily retrievable? Are there reasonable checks placed upon the captured data? (i.e. age vs years of employment)
    • Voice Recording Test – Does the IVR properly save information about the IVR transaction that has been recorded (for legal and transaction purposes)? Is the retrieval of these recording properly managed and are these recordings transmitted (when required) to the proper destinations?
    • System Load Test – Does the IVR computer system perform properly when subjected to a heavy load of calls? Is the system configured properly to handle expected peak loads? Are all of the IVR components (recordings, text to speech, network access) capable of performing under extreme call volumes?
    • Intuitive IVR Logic Test – Finally, does the IVR perform in a manner that allows the intuitive user to understand the prompts and navigation? Is the system self-correcting and can the user start over or return to a prior response without terminating the transaction?

    To further assist in the testing and analysis of an IVR program, DSC has developed an IVR resource calculation program to properly assign the correct number of phone lines based upon peak call loads and IVR utilization.
