7 best rental cars for summer vacation

Renting a car for a summer trip

Whether you don’t want to put a lot of miles on your family car or are flying and need transportation when you arrive, renting a car makes sense. In the spirit of family getaways as a warm-weather tradition, Bankrate assembled the seven best rental cars for summer vacation.

Because daily rental costs vary wildly based on the rental company, location and season of the year, rental rates didn’t factor into the picks. Bankrate advises shopping around among rental companies for the best deal. Each pick, though, received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest crash-test score of “good” in crash tests. All are also an IIHS “top safety pick.”

Comfort is a key requirement for any vacation vehicle. Each of these picks earned a rating of “good” or better from the testers at Consumer Reports for ride quality and interior noise, as well as front-seat and rear-seat comfort.

Finally, Bankrate considered fuel economy as estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency. All provide very good mileage for their size. The EPA-estimated miles per gallon are based on 2013 models with automatic transmissions.

Rental car companies have their own methods for defining compact, midsize or large. Sometimes, this involves making customers think they are getting more car than they are. Bankrate used EPA classifications. Bankrate also included at least one rental company offering each car.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: 30 minutes

Here s How:

  1. Find out the age requirement. Some companies will not rent to people under 25. For others, the minimum age is 21.

  1. at multiple online travel agents.

You may find rates vary from day to day, so if you have the time and inclination, be patient and check prices several different times.

Know that the price will go higher; steep taxes, insurance, drop-off charges, and filling the tank all add to the bottom line. You may be able to find a cheaper rate with a local company, but the cars may not be as new.

  • Determine if you are entitled to a free upgrade or discounted rate. Ask the boss if there s a corporate discount available to you. Do you belong to the American Automobile Association (AAA)? Membership costs less than $50 and yields discounts on car rentals and hotels.

Car rental rates in the same destination may differ, depending on whether you pick up the rental car in the city, at your hotel, or at the airport. Off-airport locations with free shuttles can help you stay within budget.

    1. Understand that car classes are represented by different marques at different car rental agencies. For example, Luxury at Budget may mean a Cadillac or a Mustang. At Avis, it can mean a Prius. And at Hertz, Volvo, Infiniti, Cadillac and Mercedes models are available.

Don t assume that a top of the line rental will always have the same bells and whistles, such as lumbar support or heated seats, as a privately owned one. Rental cars are typically base models.

  • Book early, especially if you re going to a popular place during peak travel time. Ask if there s a drop-off fee for leaving the car at a different location than where you picked it up.

    1. Ask what the cancellation policy is before you provide your credit card number.
    2. Only rent what you need. Don t pay for a CD/DVD player, GPS navigational system or satellite radio unless you plan to use it.
    3. Don t pay double for car insurance: Acquaint yourself with the coverage provided by your credit card company or insurance agency.
    4. If you re not legally married and both of you plan to drive, make sure both drivers names are on the agreement.
    5. Don t accept the option of returning the car empty. Fill up on gas before you return so that you aren t charged a premium when the rental company refills the tank.
    6. Inspect the car before you pull out of the agency parking lot. If there are scratches, dents, broken lights or anything you believe to be unsafe, photograph and report it.

Ask for a free map and directions. Check out the location of speed traps along your route beforehand.

  • If you plan to be a frequent renter, join a rental agency s membership club to take advantage of special offers and quick check-in/check-out.

How to Rent a Car on Vacation

    Sep 09, 2014 | Updated Nov 09, 2014

Though renting a car can seem easy, it’s important to know a handful of basic, but important facts–age restrictions, insurance coverage options, discount codes–before you get started to make sure there are no surprises when you pick your car up or drop it off at the end of your trip. Here’s our guide on everything you need to know for a successful, problem-free car rental.

THE CAR RENTAL LANDSCAPE When it comes to renting a car–especially at any of the airports in the United States–you’ll see the same group of companies: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty. There are a few other smaller or regional companies, but you’ll likely want to rent from a major player. These companies tend to have larger fleets with newer vehicles and other perks–like the ability to skip the line at the counter and head straight to your car.

If you’re looking to book a luxury car, you’ll want to seek out the companies specializing in those vehicles, like Avis Signature Series. Hertz Dream Cars. or the Exotic Car Collection from Enterprise. These outlets offer high-end cars from Audi, Aston Martin, BMW, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Maserati, and Mercedes-Benz.

AGE RESTRICTIONS No matter what type of car you plan to rent, there are some age restrictions. In most states, you must be 21 years old to rent a car. However, many agencies either won’t rent to individuals who are that young or levy a surcharge on drivers (must be 18 or older) that makes the rental very expensive, but doable. Standard rates apply when you turn 25.

RENTING CARS OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES Some countries require you to carry an International Driving Permit (which you can order from AAA or the National Auto Club ) in order to drive in their country. Even when a country doesn’t require this, some car rental agencies within that country might. Check out Fodor’s How to Drive in Europe guide for more details.

FINDING DEALS Start hunting for deals at the rental company websites to get a sense of baseline prices. Be sure to compare comparable cars at different companies. Each company offers discounts to various partners, like members of frequent flyer programs, or to organizations like AAA and AARP. Be sure to type in any discount codes you may have and compare the rates. You can also try bargain hunting on sites like Priceline, Hotwire, Expedia, and Travelocity. Costco Travel is another good resource for low-priced rentals.

When renting a car at an airport, check to see if the agency counter is located within the airport or if you have to take a shuttle to an off-site parking area. It can be cheaper to rent off-site, but remember to factor in the extra travel time and determine if it’s worth the savings.

INSURANCE INS AND OUTS You definitely want primary Collision Waiver Damage coverage whenever you rent a car, but don’t let the car rental agency pressure you into buying it from them. There are other ways to score this coverage. Primary coverage kicks in immediately, while secondary coverage means that you would first make a claim on your own auto insurance policy before the secondary coverage is activated. Purchasing the CWD through the car rental agency will be expensive. Many credit cards now offer primary or secondary car rental insurance as a benefit or sell CWD insurance at a reduced price. Check the American Express website for any car rental insurance benefit your card may offer. Some financial products from Chase also include similar benefits.

If you don’t have a credit card that offers primary collision damage waiver as a benefit, sign up for American Express Premium Car Rental Protection. There is no cost to enroll and no deductible, and Amex simply charges you a flat rate of $24.95 per vehicle rental for up to 42 consecutive days of coverage. You must use your enrolled card in order for the coverage to kick in. The fee also offers up to $100,000 in primary theft and damage coverage (liability not included). The $24.95 fee is less than what most rental car companies charge for comparable coverage.

BEFORE YOU GET IN THE CAR Avoid the temptation to race off the lot and take the time to inspect your car for any pre-existing damage. Make sure to document every scratch and dent in the presence of the car rental agent. Otherwise, the company could try to charge you for those damages when you return the vehicle.

WHEN YOU RETURN THE CAR Usually, you are obligated to return the car with a full tank of gas, so be sure to fill up at a station before you get close to the airport, where prices at the pump are often exaggerated. Alternatively, there are policies at some rental car companies that will allow you to return the car with less than a full tank of gas and you just pay a preset rate for the gallons you used. However, you must pre-arrange this option when you first pick up the car.

Be sure to return the car on time. Some companies will charge you an entire extra rental day if you return the car even half an hour late. Others are more lenient and will only charge you half a day. Refer to your rental contract for full details.

Finally, be sure to check under the seats for any small items–like cameras, cell phones, or umbrellas–that might have rolled under there before handing over the keys.

    Rental Car Insurance

We often receive calls from our clients regarding insurance for a rental car. Nobody wants to spend extra money on insurance. Yet, does a personal auto insurance policy really extend to cover a rental car?

Please notice that this article is focused on personal passenger vehicle and not moving vans. If you are looking to rent a moving van, your auto policy’s liability insurance will extend, but there is no coverage for physical damage (collision or comprehensive) to the rented moving truck because it doesn’t fit the policy contract description of “private passenger auto”. We recommend that you purchase the rental company’s insurance if you rent a moving van.

But without further ado, here are the most common questions about Rental Car Insurance:

Does My Auto Policy Cover a Rental Car?

You may have heard that your auto insurance policy or credit card will cover a rental car. That can be true. But it can also leave you with serious coverage gaps. That’s why we generally advise our clients to buy the rental car company’s coverage.

But, let’s start at the beginning, shall we? As a general rule, your car insurance extends to a rental car if:

    • You will be driving the rental car in the United States or Canada.
    • You drive with the rental car company’s permission.

(That means, everybody who might drive the rental car must be signed up as a ‘driver’ on the rental agreement. A driver who is not listed on the agreement is not driving with permission.)

  • You are renting a car for short-term use only (less than 28 days.)
  • You are renting a car for personal use.
(Your personal auto policy generally does not cover business use, unless specified. Therefore, if you use a rental car for business purposes, your loss may not be covered.)
  • You have the necessary coverage on your auto policy.
That means you don’t only have liability, underinsured motorist and personal injury protection coverage, but also comprehensive and collision coverage. If you dropped the latter two on your own car, you would not have this coverage on a rental car. This may become a problem if you back into an obstacle or ‘ding’ the windshield.
  • You are renting a private passenger vehicle.

That means, no moving van or similar vehicle. If you are looking to rent a moving van, your auto policy’s liability insurance will extend, but there is no coverage for physical damage (collision or comprehensive) to the rented moving truck because it doesn’t fit the policy contract description of “private passenger auto”.

  • Does My Credit Card Cover A Rental Car?

Maybe. Some of the premium credit cards (Gold and Platinum) do indeed offer coverage for a rental car. Since the contracts vary from card to card, you may want to call your credit card company to find out exactly what is covered. Some cards may only provide secondary or excess coverage, requiring you to file a claim with your own auto insurance company before the credit card coverage applies.

Also, we’ve seen these “added value” premium card contracts change frequently and with limited, small-print notice to credit card holders.

What is a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)?

If purchased, this waiver relieves you from financial liability for the loss of, or damage to the rental car and its parts and accessories. Here’s why we recommend it:

    • Rental car companies only make money while renting out their cars. If the car you rented gets damaged and needs repair, it cannot be rented during the repair process, which can often extend several weeks. In most cases, the fine print in your rental agreement will stipulate that you owe the rental company for loss of rental income during the repair process.
    • In addition, most rental contracts will stipulate that an “administrative charge” can be made which covers their costs for handling your claim for the rental car. However, the contracts don’t specify the amount of this charge, which could leave you with a large and unexpected bill that is not reimbursed by your insurance policy. Why ruin great vacation memories just to save the $15 or so per day charge for LDW?
    • If you don’t have comprehensive and collision coverage on your auto policy, you should always buy the LDW.
    • If you have comprehensive / collision coverage on your personal car insurance, we still recommend buying the LDW. Why? Because if you buy the LDW, you may not have to file a claim under your personal auto policy, you won’t have to pay the deductible, and you will not be charged for loss of rental income and claims administration expense by the rental car company if the rental car is damaged while it is in your possession.
    • Always be sure to read the fine print: There are likely to be some exclusions, such as coverage that does not apply for drivers not listed on the contract, when driving intoxicated, when driving off road, or when driving certain stretches of road such as the infamous road to Hana in Maui.
    • Most importantly, if you still decide not to buy the LDW, please be sure to inspect the rental car carefully before you drive it off the rental car lot. Unfortunately, we’ve heard of clients getting charged for pre-existing damage because they hadn’t insisted that the rental agent note it on the rental agreement before leaving the lot.

If in doubt, don’t hesitate to call our office: 425-379-9200.

    * Please Note: Insurance policies vary from company to company and from State to State. Not every Washington State insurance policy will include every coverage described above. Be sure to read your policy and check with your insurance agent for personalized information.
