Hypercharge Oracle data loading performance: speed tips

Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting

February 17, 2015

Is there any limit to the speed of Oracle? With Oracle announcing a new record one million transactions per minute, many believe that there is nothing that Oracle cannot do.

The fastest Oracle table insert rate I’ve ever seen was 400,000 rows per second, about 24 millions rows per minute, using super-fast RAM disk (SSD), but Greg Rahn of Oracle notes SQL insert rates of upwards of 6 million rows per second using the Exadata firmware:

One of the faster bulk (parallel nologging direct path from external table using direct path compression) load rates I’ve seen is just over 7.7 billion rows in under 20 minutes which equates to around 385,000,000 per minute or about 6,416,666 per second.

All the CPUs are running at around 99% user CPU during that load. That was loading to spinning rust (Exadata Storage). It would be even faster had compression not been used. That was on a HP Oracle DB Machine (64 Intel Harpertown CPU cores).

However, what if we have a requirement for a system that must accept high-volume data loads into a single table:

500,000 rows per second

50 megabytes per second

Is this possible? Using the right tricks you an make Oracle load data at unbelievable speed. However, special knowledge and tricks are required.

Oracle provides us with many choices for data loading, some way faster than others:

SQL insert and merge statements

PL/SQL bulk loads for the forall PL/SQL operator

Oracle Data Pump

Batch Data Loading

If you are loading your data from flat files there are many products and Oracle tools to improve your load speed:

Oracle Data Pump (available January 2004) – With Data Pump Import, a single stream of data load is about 15-45 times faster than original Import. This is because original Import uses only conventional mode inserts, whereas Data Pump Import uses the direct path method of loading.

  • Oracle SQL*Loader – Oracle SQL*Loader has dozens of options including direct-path loads, unrecoverable, etc and get super-fast loads. Here are tips for getting high-speed loads with SQL*Loader.
  • BMC Fast Import for Oracle – Claims to be 2 to 5x faster than Oracle import utility.
  • CoSORT FAst extraCT (FACT) for Oracle – Claims to get Bulk loads up to 90% faster when CoSORT pre-sorts the load file on the table’s index key. This also improves clustering_factor and improves run-time SQL access speeds by reducing logical I/O.

  • Tips for super fast data loading

Don’t use standard SQL insets as they are far slower than other approaches. If you must use SQL inserts, make sure to use the APPEND hint to bypass the freelists and raise the high-water mark for the table. You are way better off using PL/SQL with the bulk insert features (up to 100x faster).

Don’t use standard SQL insets – They are far slower than other approaches. If you must use SQL inserts, make sure to use the APPEND hint to bypass the freelists and raise the high-water mark for the table. Note: INSERT APPEND supports only the subquery syntax of the INSERT statement, not the VALUES clause. You are way better off using PL/SQL with the bulk insert features (up to 100x faster).

  • Partition – Load the data in a separate partition, using transportable tablespaces.
  • Use SSD RAM Disk – Especially for the insert partition, undo and redo. You can move the partition to standard disk later.
  • Use parallel DML – Parallelize the data loads according to the number of processors and disk layout. Try to saturate your processors with parallel processes.
  • Disable constraints and indexes – Disable during load and re-enable in parallel following the load.
  • Use multiple freelists or freelist groups for target tables – Avoid using bitmap freelists ASS management (automatic segment space management) for super high-volume loads.
  • Pre-sort the data in index key order – This will make subsequent SQL run far faster for index range scans.
  • Size your log_buffer properly – If you have waits associated to log_buffer size ?db log sync wait. try increasing to to 10m.
  • Use RAM Disk – Place undo tablespace and online redo logs on Solid-state disk (RAM SAN),
  • Use SAME RAID – Avoid RAID5 and use Oracle Stripe and Mirror Everywhere approach (RAID 1+0, RAID10).
  • Use a small db_cache_size – If loading with DML a small data cache will minimize DBWR work during async buffer cleanouts. In Oracle you can use the alter system set db_cache_size command to temporarily reduce the data buffer cache size.
  • Watch your commit frequency – At each commit, Oracle releases locks and undo segments. Benchmarks suggest that you should commit as infrequently as possible and use vary large undo segments to avoid a ORA-1555 (snapshot too old) error.
  • Use a large blocksize – Data loads onto 32k blocksizes will run far faster because Oracle will be able to insert more rows into an empty block before a write.

  • For more information and details, I’m available to assist with your high-speed loading needs.

Blood Test: Hepatic (Liver) Function Panel

    What It Is

The hepatic function panel, also known as liver function tests, is a group of seven tests used to evaluate the liver for injury, infection, or inflammation.

The liver plays important roles: It stores energy from food, makes proteins, and helps remove toxins. The liver also makes bile, a fluid that helps in digestion.

    Why It’s Done

Liver function tests help doctors find out whether the liver has been damaged. If your child is experiencing symptoms of liver disease including jaundice (yellowish skin or eyes), dark urine, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal swelling these tests may be ordered. They also may be done to help diagnose viral infections (such as hepatitis or mononucleosis) or to monitor medications that can cause liver-related side effects.

    The hepatic function panel evaluates:

    • Alanine aminotransferase (ALT). This enzyme, found in the liver, plays a role in metabolism, the process that converts food into energy. If the liver is injured, ALT is released into the bloodstream. Its levels are especially high with acute hepatitis.
    • Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). This enzyme is found in the liver, bones, intestines, kidneys, and other organs. Kids and teens normally have higher levels of ALP than adults, even when they’re healthy, due to bone growth. But ALP levels can also increase when kids have viral infections, liver diseases, or blocked bile ducts.
    • Aspartate aminotransferase (AST). This enzyme, which plays a role in processing proteins, is found in the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys. When the liver is injured or inflamed, levels of AST in the blood usually rise.
    • Total bilirubin and direct bilirubin. Bilirubin is a byproduct of the normal breakdown of red blood cells. It usually passes through the liver and is excreted from the body. But if that doesn’t happen due to a liver disease, bilirubin levels in the blood can rise and the skin can take on the yellow discoloration known as jaundice. Tests for bilirubin may be total (measuring the level of all of the bilirubin in the blood) or direct (measuring only bilirubin that has been processed by the liver and attached to other chemicals).
    • Albumin and total protein. Protein is needed to build and maintain muscles, bones, blood, and organ tissue. Sometimes when there’s a problem with the liver, it can’t make proteins as well, so protein levels decrease. Liver function tests measure albumin specifically (the major blood protein produced by the liver), as well as the total amount of all proteins in the blood.

    Preparation

Although the hepatic function panel can be done without any preparation, it’s more accurate when performed after fasting. Your child may be asked to stop eating and drinking for 10 to 12 hours before this blood test. You should also tell your doctor about any medications your child is taking because certain drugs might alter the test results.

On the day of the test, having your child wear a short-sleeve shirt can make things easier for the technician who will be drawing the blood.

    The Procedure

A health professional will usually draw the blood from a vein. For an infant, the blood may be obtained by puncturing the heel with a small needle (lancet). If the blood is being drawn from a vein, the skin surface is cleaned with antiseptic, and an elastic band (tourniquet) is placed around the upper arm to apply pressure and cause the veins to swell with blood. A needle is inserted into a vein (usually in the arm inside of the elbow or on the back of the hand) and blood is withdrawn and collected in a vial or syringe.

After the procedure, the elastic band is removed. Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed and the area is covered with cotton or a bandage to stop the bleeding. Collecting blood for this test will only take a few minutes.

    What to Expect

Either method (heel or vein withdrawal) of collecting a sample of blood is only temporarily uncomfortable and can feel like a quick pinprick. Afterward, there may be some mild bruising, which should go away in a day or so.

    Getting the Results

The blood sample will be processed by a machine. Parts of a hepatic function panel may be available in minutes in an emergency, but more commonly the full test results come after a few hours or the next day.

If any of the results seem to point to liver damage or disease, further testing may be necessary to determine what’s causing the problem and how to treat it.

    Risks

The hepatic function panel is considered a safe procedure. However, as with many medical tests, some problems can occur with having blood drawn, like:

    • fainting or feeling lightheaded
    • hematoma (blood accumulating under the skin causing a lump or bruise)
    • pain associated with multiple punctures to locate a vein

    Helping Your Child

Having a blood test is relatively painless. Still, many children are afraid of needles. Explaining the test in terms your child can understand might help ease some of the fear.

Allow your child to ask the technician any questions he or she might have. Tell your child to try to relax and stay still during the procedure, as tensing muscles and moving can make it harder and more painful to draw blood. It also may help if your child looks away when the needle is being inserted into the skin.

    If You Have Questions

If you have questions about the hepatic function panel, speak with your doctor. You can also talk to the technician before the procedure.

    What is Multivariate Testing?

    Multivariate Tests Defined

Multivariate testing is a technique for testing a hypothesis in which multiple variables are modified. The goal of multivariate testing is to determine which combination of variations performs the best out of all of the possible combinations.

Websites and mobile apps are made of combinations of changeable elements. A multivariate test will change multiple elements, like changing a picture and headline at the same time. Three variations of the image and two variations of the headline are combined to create six versions of the content, which are tested concurrently to find the winning variation.

The total number of variations in a multivariate test will always be:

[# of Variations on Element A] X [# of Variations on Element B]. = [Total # of Variations]

In the example below, the headline and image are tested in combination, with a baseline and one variation for each element generating four total variations for the experiment.

The process of running a multivariate test is similar to A/B split testing. but different in that A/B testing only tests one variable. In an A/B test, a minimum of one variable is tested to determine the effect of a change to one variable. In a multivariate test, multiple variables are tested together to uncover the ideal combination that is effective in improving the ultimate goal.

    Benefits of Multivariate Testing

Using multivariate testing can be helpful when multiple elements on the same page can be changed in tandem to improve a single conversion goal: sign ups, clicks, form completions, or shares. If conducted properly, a multivariate test can eliminate the need to run several sequential A/B tests on the same page with the same goal. Instead, the tests are run concurrently with a greater number of variations in a shorter period of time.

    Downsides of Multivariate Testing

The most difficult challenge in executing multivariate tests is the amount of visitor traffic required to reach meaningful results. Because of the fully factorial nature of these tests, the number of variations in a test can add up quickly. The result of a many-variation test is that the allocated traffic to each variation is lower. In A/B testing. traffic for an experiment is split in half, with 50 percent of traffic visiting each variation. In a multivariate test, traffic will be split into quarters, sixths, eighths, or even smaller segments, with variations receiving a much smaller portion of traffic than in a simple A/B test.

Before running a multivariate test, project the traffic sample size that you will need for each variation in order to reach a statistically significant result. If traffic to the page you would like to test is low, consider using an A/B test instead of a multivariate test.

Another challenge of multivariate testing is when one or more of the variables being tested do not have a measurable effect on the conversion goal. For instance, if variations of an image on a landing page do not affect the conversion goal, while modifications to a headline do, the test would have been more effective run as an A/B test rather than a multivariate test.

    Examples of Multivariate Testing

Common examples of multivariate tests include:

    • Testing text and visual elements on a webpage together
    • Testing the text and color of a CTA button together
    • Testing the number of form fields and CTA text together

Using multivariate testing as a method of website optimization is a powerful method of gathering visitor and user data that gives detailed insights into complex customer behavior. This week I am pleased to report that the EPO recently hosted the first meeting of an additional new committee to work specifically on quality. Although the EPO has been holding meetings of the Standing Advisory Committee before the European Patent Office (SACEPO ) since 1979, this is the very first time that a sub-committee has been formed to address this particular aspect of our work.

SACEPO has already proven to be an important link to our users because it is a direct interface between representatives of our users and of the EPO. The committee and its sub-committees are comprised of nominees from industry (nominated by BUSINESSEUROPE) and the patent profession (nominated by epi ), as well as recognised experts in the field of industrial property law. At this recent sub-committee, we welcomed representatives from both from within Europe and as far afield as Japan, Korea and the United States. With a multitude of users present, the discussions provided useful input on quality-related issues. Items such as our Early Certainty initiative, quality in examination and EPO PCT products were all discussed in a constructive exchange of views that will now be analysed to help us assess ways to improve quality yet further.

There are already a great number of measures to protect what we have achieved over the last forty years in the field of quality; a clear legal framework, highly trained examiners, three examiners per application and an ISO 9001-certified patent granting process, among others. Those quality levels are also constantly monitored. Controls and quality checks throughout the procedure (formalities checks, first examiner, examining division, chairman, team manager, director, etc.) ensure that only conforming products are delivered to the applicant and the public. Quality audits are regularly carried out, and last year they revealed that ambitious targets in search and opposition were surpassed.

But protecting quality is not enough. Our task, in line with both our reputation as a leader in this field and our obligation to our users is to continue to make constant improvements. The SACEPO sub-committee on quality was just one and there are other far-reaching actions foreseen for 2017, as we continue to innovate in the field of patent quality.

Firstly, we will be ensuring that our quality policy is in line with real world developments. Currently preparations are underway to align our ISO 9001 Quality Management System with the very latest 2015 version of the international ISO standard. Similarly, provision is being made for the unitary patent administration process to also conform to these latest ISO 9001 quality requirements when it arrives later this year. 2017 will also be the very first time in which quality will be monitored regularly at the very highest level. From now on the Office will present an annual quality report to our member states in the Administrative Council, providing yet another check on the status of our progress.

In addition, we will be building upon our foundations with more investment in examiner training, new and improved IT tools, more ambitious internal quality targets and constantly expanding data coverage through agreements with other offices. The last of these has proved particularly important. I have heard first-hand how greater access to Asian prior art is valued by users for helping to ensure quality. With data exchange agreements in place with the large Asian offices, such as JPO, KIPO and SIPO, access to Asian prior art is an area in which the EPO continues to excel – to the point where 27% of all citations now originate from Asian prior art.

Quality is therefore constantly scrutinised and improved and that is welcomed by our users; it is a priority for the EPO precisely because it is a priority for our applicants. “Patent quality always has to be paramount”, said Brian Klein of Boeing at a recent EPO management meeting in The Hague, which was dedicated to the theme of quality and which invited some of our users to voice their expectations and discuss how we can improve further.

Is our approach of continually improving working? Feedback by an independent survey last year and our User Satisfaction Surveys indicates that it is. After all, Quality is in our DNA at the EPO but our culture is to continually look for further improvements.

Last Friday the Supreme Court of the Netherlands conclusively endorsed the EPO’s immunity and the validity of its legal framework. It follows a case originally brought before the national courts of the Netherlands by one of the EPO`s trade unions, which asserted that it had no means to legally challenge recent reforms within the Office. Psychic Tests

The following are psychic tests and games designed to measure your degree of psychic abilities (or spiritual gifts) or to be used as tools to develop your psychic talents. However, these tests will not provide you the ultimate answer about whether if you’re psychic or not, so please, don’t send us emails about the results, since some are rather subjective.

If you’re psychic (more than your average person, that is), you should know it. These are for entertainment purposes, not to be taken so seriously. They may help you confirm what you already know, but real life is the only real test. No reproduction of any part without permission.

    Online Tarot Reading

Tarot cards are a highly symbolic deck of cards consisting of 22 Major Arcana cards, and 56 Minor Arcana cards. Arcana means secrets or mysteries, which is why the ability to decipher the symbols is half the gift of the translator.

    Zener Cards

Zener Cards were used by the famous parapsychologist J.B. Rhine in his studies of ESP and have now become the standard for such extra sensorial tests. There are some variations of the Zener cards test, some are using a closed deck of cards (5 groups of each 5 cards) or open deck (each cards are randomly selected from a deck shuffled at each turns). The following test is an open deck, since a card is randomly generated from a shuffled deck every time.

    Remote Viewing with a Picture

Remote viewing differentiates itself from other psychic abilities in that it follows a set of protocols. Remote viewing was originally termed by parties associated with labs and universities and they wanted a controlled environment using strict protocols and procedures. They wanted it to take this ability from back alley psychic shops to procedural processes in controlled conditions. One example is that remote viewing uses a blind target or items to psychically view.

    Telekinesis Test

This is a simple telekinesis test inspired by coin tossing contests, it consists of an algorithm that will randomly generate zeroes and ones, instead of heads or tails. Mathematical laws dictate that over a certain period of time, the average between the number of 0s and 1s should be 50% / 50%, and the longer the time period, the closer the results should be to this figure. If someone tried to telekinetically influence the outcome of those coin flippings, we could possibly calculate his telekinesis ability by observing how far the results are from the statistical average.

    Guess the Word Quizz

The following psychic test is not based on any scientific or academic research but it can help determine if you have some talents towards remote viewing (or simply guessing) a word rather than a picture, as some people may have greater literal talent than visual. We added it mostly for fun.

    Guess the Random Number

The following psychic test is not based on any scientific or academic research either but it can help determine if you have some ESP talents towards guessing a number. The number is between 0 and 9. Like in quizz shows or puzzles, the number is displayed by an asterisk. As in the Zener Cards test, the higher the number of sessions, the more meaningful the total score is.

    ESP Test

Some people know things before they are going to happen. They can sense who is on the phone, what someone will say, or some of their dreams will come true. These people are known as psychics. We all have some extra sensory ability and this test will let you know how much ESP you possess!

    Sensitivity Test

This test is just to see where you are at, in terms of how sensitive you are to subtle perceptions and energy. People with a high level of sensitivity are usually natural psychics because that’s what being psychic is all about: the ability to pick up subtle information not normally detectible by the other five senses. This information is all around us. It’s just a matter of who in sensitive enough to pick it up. This is similar to low level sound frequencies that humans can’t hear, but dogs and other animals can pick up perfectly. There are of course exceptions. Natural psychics do exist who possess open feelers that have done little to no work to develop them and were just born that way.
