Brief History: The 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid SUV to be sold in the United States. The 2-wheel drive hybrid Escape achieved an EPA estimated 36 miles per gallon (mpg) in city driving – twice the gas mileage of the average S.U.V. built that year (17.9 mpg). Lexus introduced the first luxury hybrid SUV. The 2006 Lexus 400h averaged 26 mpg in combined city and highway driving. That same year, the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid became the first available 7 passenger, mid-size hybrid vehicle, reaching 28 mpg combined. GM offered the first full-size hybrid utility in 2008 when they introduced their eco-friendly Chevrolet Tahoe. With seating for 8, this Tahoe model was able to reach 21 mpg combined. To date, millions of full and mild hybrid vehicles have been sold worldwide. View a hybrid vehicle timeline here.

With U.S. oil prices recently hitting a 5 year low, now might be the time to consider a bigger car or truck for you family. And making it a hybrid version rather than some trendy gas guzzler will look like a smart decision as prices inevitably move back up again. Learn more about hybrid vehicles here.
