SANS OUCH for June 2017 Lessons From WannaCry

Recently, you most likely watched widespread news coverage of a new cyber attack called WannaCry. It infected over 200,000 computers worldwide and locked numerous organizations out of their data, including hospitals in the United Kingdom. There are several reasons this attack gained so much attention. First, it spread rapidly from computer to computer by attacking a known weakness in Windows computers. Second, the attack was a type of malware called Ransomware, which meant that once it infected your computer it encrypted all your files, locking you out of your data. The only way you could recover your data was from backups or by paying the attacker a $300 ransom to decrypt all of your data. The third and most important reason this attack gained so much attention was because it never should have happened. The weakness that WannaCry attacked in Windows computers was well known by Microsoft, which had released a fix months earlier. But many organizations failed to install the fix, or were still using operating systems that are no longer supported by Microsoft. Here are three simple steps you can take to make sure attacks like WannaCry never infect your computers.

First and foremost, make sure your computers, mobile devices, apps, and anything else connected to the Internet are up-to-date. Cyber criminals are constantly looking for new vulnerabilities in the software your devices use. When they discover vulnerabilities, they use special programs to exploit them and hack into the devices you are using. Meanwhile, the companies that created the software for your devices are hard at work fixing these vulnerabilities by releasing updates. By dutifully installing these updates on your computers and mobile devices, you make it much harder for someone to hack you. That’s what was so frustrating about the spread of WannaCry: the updates to fix and stop the attack had been released almost two months earlier by Microsoft. Had organizations kept their computers up-to-date, the attack would never have worked. To ensure that your devices stay current, enable automatic updating whenever possible to almost any technology connected to a network. This includes not just your computers and mobile devices, but also Internet-connected TVs, home routers, and gaming consoles (and someday perhaps even your car). If your operating systems or devices are so old that they are no longer supported with security updates, as is the case with Windows XP, replace them with new ones that are supported.

In some cases, cyber attacks like Ransomware may even infect up-to-date systems. A second way to protect yourself is to back up your data. Backups are copies of your information stored somewhere other than on your computer or mobile device. When you lose valuable data, you can recover that data from your backups. Unfortunately, too many people fail to perform regular backups, even though they are simple and inexpensive. There are two ways to back up your data: physical media or cloud-based storage. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages. You can use both approaches at the same time if you are unsure which one to use.

Physical media is devices you control, such as external USB drives or network-connected drives located in your home or office. The advantage of using your own physical media is that it enables you to backup and recover large amounts of data very fast. The disadvantage is that if you become infected with malware, such as Ransomware, it is possible for the infection to spread to your backups. If you are using physical media for backups, you should store copies of your backups off site in a secure location. Make sure any backups you store are properly labeled.

Cloud-based solutions are online services that back up and store your les on the Internet. Typically, you install an application on your computer. The advantage of cloud-based solutions is their simplicity. In addition, if you become infected with Ransomware, the infection cannot access cloud-based backups. The disadvantage is that it can take a long time to back up or recover very large amounts of data. Do not forget to consider the privacy and security of Cloud backups. Does the backup service provide your backups strong security, such as encrypting your data and strong authentication?

Finally, bad guys are always updating and changing their methods of attack. Cyber criminals often use another attack method called phishing. Phishing is when cyber criminals send you an email that tries to trick you into opening an infected attachment or visiting a malicious website. If you do either, your computer may become infected. While WannaCry did not involve phishing, this attack method is commonly used for many other types of attacks, including most types of Ransomware. In addition, the cyber criminals who developed WannaCry will undoubtedly update their attack methods in the coming months and use new techniques, such as phishing, to infect even more computers. The key to protecting yourself against such email-based attacks is common sense. If an email or message seems odd, suspicious, or too good to be true, it is most likely an attack.

Folder HelpDesk for Microsoft Outlook

With Folder HelpDesk a workgroup can collaborate on tickets inside Outlook.

The application is installed in a shared mailbox or public folder, where you see rows of open tickets.
If you want to work with one of them, just click it and a ticket form will open.

The ticket form HTML part has various dropdown fields to categorize the ticket, and it can be customized. The ticket also has a free text field for a description of the incident and its solution.

There are several benefits of having the ticket system inside Outlook:

Team Viewer is now regarded as the number one software for this purpose.

It bypasses all firewall and port rules and you wont need to set up anything other than
an install of the software on each machine. Basically, you would be able to
store the parter id’s (office machines) and access them at will.

I tried team viewer. The difference in video quality is considerable. If you can explain how to correct that, then I’m all for it.

I just did another straight across comparison between TeamViewer and Remote Desktop. Performance with Remote Desktop is much better. I am doing this inside my home network at the moment which might make a difference, but when I’ve connected using Remote Desktop from outside I don’t recall seeing much difference from inside to outside.

getting multiple computers, do I need a switch or a router?
I just bought a used refurbished Dell PC with XP installed, and am also considering a Raspberry Pi. Provided I would want to hook all 3(well, 2- I have 2 monitors and can only run 2 at a time at most) to the internet so I’m not using one at a time, would I need a switch or a router for this? Contributor License Agreements

The ASF desires that all contributors of ideas, code, or documentation to any Apache projects complete, sign, and submit via email an Individual Contributor License Agreement (ICLA).

The purpose of this agreement is to clearly define the terms under which intellectual property has been contributed to the ASF and thereby allow us to defend the project should there be a legal dispute regarding the software at some future time. A signed ICLA is required to be on file before an individual is given commit rights to any ASF project.

For a corporation that has assigned employees to work on an Apache project, a Corporate CLA (CCLA) is available for contributing intellectual property via the corporation, that may have been assigned as part of an employment agreement.

Note that a Corporate CLA does not remove the need for every developer to sign their own ICLA as an individual, which covers both contributions which are owned and those that are not owned by the corporation signing the CCLA.

The CCLA legally binds the corporation, so it must be signed by a person with authority to enter into legal contracts on behalf of the corporation.

If you are submitting an ICLA in response to an invitation from a PMC, be sure to identify the project via the form field “notify project”. Also, choose a preferred id that is not already in use. Software Grants

When an individual or corporation decides to donate a body of existing software or documentation to one of the Apache projects, they need to execute a formal Software Grant Agreement (SGA) with the ASF. Typically, this is done after negotiating approval with the ASF Incubator or one of the PMCs, since the ASF will not accept software unless there is a viable community available to support a collaborative project.

Documents may be submitted by email and signed by hand or by electronic signature. Postal mail hard copy and fax are no longer supported.

If possible, send the attachment from the email address in the document. Please send only one document per email.

If you prefer to sign electronically, please fill the form, save it locally (e.g. icla.pdf), and sign the file by preparing a detached PGP signature. For example,

Please note that typing your name in the field at the bottom of the document is not signing, regardless of the font that is used. Signing is either writing your signature by hand on a printed copy of the document, or digitally signing via gpg. Unsigned documents will not be accepted.

Windows 7: Is there reboot or restart log to explain why or what?

Random re-boots are a difficult thing to trace as the actual event does not give the operating system time to react and write an error message – you may find some clues in the Event manager – but this may be misleading as the actual cause of the re-boot is rarely logged.

To find the Event Log right click on Computer and select manage

The most common cause of random re-boots is probably the Power supply but of course there are other possibilities.

First things to do is check that the specification of the PSU is sufficient for the hardware installed

I am also having this problem. It’s happened 2 or 3 times so far (I got a new machine a couple of months ago) and it always happens when I am away and the machine is idle. At first I thought it was Windows Update but I have that set to not install without my telling it to do so. I looked at the Task Manager and figured out how long the system has been up, so I went to System Events and found the events after the reboot. I’ve got this message after it restarts:

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly .

The first message after the reboot is at 11:40:32am and the previous message was at 10:17 so there is nothing obvious there (I guess it could show that it was not a clean shutdown since there are likely lost messages). I checked my C: disk for files modified around 11:40 to see if I could figure out what was going on when it rebooted. At 11:38, there is activity in
C:\Users\bill\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Feeds\FeedsStore.feedsdb-ms

Also FeedsStore.feedsdb-ms and Internet Explorer Suggested Sites

feed-ms in the same directory structure.

Obviously other files might have been updated right before the reboot but they’ve been updated since then.

I doubt this has anything that will help solve the problem but hopefully the next person who has it will add their information and maybe we can figure it out.

    The term outsourcing often refers to offshore outsourcing, or the practice of exporting work outside of the United States to companies in less-developed countries, where there tends to be lower labor costs. However, outsourcing is not always the most effective way for companies to save costs. Insourcing, or assigning tasks to people or departments in-house, is sometimes more cost-effective for businesses than hiring outside staff or companies. The term insourcing is sometimes used to refer to employing the U.S.-based subsidiaries of foreign global corporations. a practice also referred to as onshore outsourcing or domestic outsourcing.

    Support for abortion, he continued, is “not negotiable and should not change city by city or state by state” and that the party “must speak up for this principle as loudly as ever and with one voice” in light of Republican and pro-life victories and every level.

    “A party chair that describes abortion as a ‘fundamental value’ loses immediate credibility.” said Arina Grossu, who heads the Center for Human Dignity at Family Research Council at the Washington-based Family Research Council in an email Monday to The CHristian Post.

    “The Democratic Party promotes the killing of unborn babies through all 9 months of pregnancy while also demanding that taxpayers pay for it. This abortion platform is so extreme that it led to Trump’s victory. Pro-life Democrats need to stand up and reclaim their party’s platform,” she said.

    Perez’s comments followed a back and forth episode between abortion rights advocates like NARAL who were angered with his initial backing of Democratic Omaha mayoral candidate Heath Mello, who has a pro-life voting record and was endorsed by Nebraska Right to Life in 2010.

    Meanwhile, other prominent Democratic leaders are sending mixed signals.

    House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told Chuck Todd on Meet the Press Sunday that “of course” it is possible to be pro-life and Democrat at the same time. 2016 presidential candidate and independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont continues to stand behind Mello’s candidacy, saying Sunday on CBS Face the Nation the party needs to be pragmatic “if we’re going to become a 50-state party.”

    But Perez’s comments have upset some on the left, who are in agreement with the party’s agenda except on this issue.

    “For pro-life Democrats like myself, this wasn’t just disappointing — it was infuriating,” wrote Matthew Tyson at Millennial Journal Monday.

    Tyson, a Catholic, is a marketing strategist and an advocate for pro-life ideology on the Left and is also a co-founder of The New Pro-Life Movement.

    “We simply cannot afford to define ourselves based on a singular issue, especially one as divisive and alienating as abortion. As stated above, the Republicans have the majority at every level, and they are actively attempting to strip millions of Americans of their health insurance, roll back any progress we’ve made on combating climate change, cut benefits for the poor, and demolish public education,” he said.

    Likewise, writing under the pseudonym Healthcarewatcher on the left-wing site DailyKos. a frustrated pro-life Democrat noted that he was the product of a difficult pregnancy, praising his mother’s choice to give him life.

    “I was healthy at birth because my biological Mother received payments from Social Security Disability, received assistance with the purchase of food from what are now the SNAP and WIC programs, and received medical care from Medicaid. Those are the reasons I am not, and never will be, a Republican,” he said.

    Yet “[i]f we have become so ideologically driven as a party that people like me and former Congressman Bart Stupak are not welcome in the party because of our deeply held, and deeply personal, pro-life views, we will never return to the majority,” he continued.

    An April 2016 Pew poll shows that 28 percent of Democrats believe abortion should be illegal in all or most cases as do 14 percent of self-identified liberals.

    Twenty one million passengers travel daily on Indian Railways using the unreserved journey facility. An unreserved ticket authorizes these journeys but as the name implies, offers no reserved seats or berths. The ticket is not specific to a train service either. This facility is predominantly used by commuters and suburban travellers – over short distances where assured seating is not a necessity. It is also available to lower income groups travelling longer distances and connects the rural hinterland to districts, towns and cities. Tickets are issued to the unreserved passenger any time of day or night as booking offices remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    Unreserved Ticketing at Railway Counters

    The unreserved ticketing system began as a pilot project in August 2002 on Northern Railway. A precursor to this centralized ticketing system was the Self Printing Ticket Machines (SPTMs), a standalone system that was phased out with the arrival of UTS. Initially the central hardware architecture was supported with station level servers to ensure business continuity in the event of network failures. The booking office operator dispensed the tickets using dumb terminals and dot matrix printers. Over the years with improved reliability of the network a newer design came into force with the introduction of thin clients provided to the operator.     The graph below shows the growth of the service from 2002. Today the service is available at nearly 5690 locations over all the 16 Zones of the Indian Railways. The Zonal Railways are responsible for manning the UTS counters and running the services, while CRIS maintains the application and ensures continuity of business at the system level. There are nearly 100 ticket types that are sold through the system – based on class of travel, concessions for senior citizens and children, concessions to other categories, and season tickets. The business rules and fares are determined by the policies of the Ministry of Railways.

    Jan Sadharan Ticket Booking Sewa (JTBS)

    Ticketing services for the unreserved sector were also outsourced as per Railway Board’s Jan Sadharan Ticket Booking Sewa (JTBS) scheme launched in January 2007. Currently JTBS outlets are available at more than 609 locations. These outlets provide self employment opportunities and the operators are offered a commission per passenger. The terminals at these counters connect to the central servers for issuing the tickets.

    Automatic Ticket Vending Machines

    Apart from manned counters for dispensing tickets, there are also automatic ticket vending machines (ATVM) that are operated using smart cards and touch screens. This technology was first introduced in Mumbai in Oct’2007 and its success led to proliferation to other metropolitan cities. Chennai, Secunderabad, Delhi and Kolkata are the other cities where these machines are currently commissioned. The table below shows the number of machines at each of these regions and the average daily sales as in July 2013.

    Mobile-Van Ticketing. ‘Mushkil Aasan’

    In order to make ticketing a more convenient experience, the concept of Mobile Counters deployed in Vans was made operational in Jan 2010. As a pilot, one such Van is functional in Delhi and Kolkata issuing both Un-reserved and Reserved Tickets. This model makes use of GPRS/CDMA technologies for connecting to the server.

    Currency Operated Ticket vending Machine (CoTVM)

    In an endeavour to use cash & coins for ticketing by passenger themselves, the concept of Currency operated ticket vending machine (CoTVM) was evolved and made operational at Mumbai in Sep 2012. As a pilot, one machine is functional in Mumbai, one in Chennai and one in Secunderabad. The CoTVM is an unmanned kiosk which is operated by passengers themselves. It has the feature of issuing Journey tickets & Platform tickets and renewing Season tickets. It can also be used to recharge Smart cards used in ATVMs. Payment is in the form coins, bank notes and smart cards. The machine is capable of accepting specific coins of Re.1, Rs.5 and Rs.10 and bank notes of Rs. 5, Rs.10, Rs.20, Rs.50, Rs.100, Rs.500 and Rs.1000 of Gandhi series. The machine does not accept currency notes with Ashoka Chakra Emblem.

    The application has been developed with a two layered architecture in C++. The database requirements are met through a Sybase product, ASE-CE. A Java version of the application is used in the ATVMs to provide additional features in the user interface.

    Currently, the hardware is deployed across 06 data centres, including one data centre for Disaster Recovery. To cater to the expansion of the user base for this application, the setup was revamped recently and migrated to a high-end Virtualized setup. This is the first time that Virtualization has been implemented for an application of Indian Railways. The backend setup has a provision to support Business Continuity ensuring nearly 100% uptime for the application. Besides this, at the client end, the so called ‘Smart Clients’ have been deployed which are basically thin clients with a footprint of Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) and application image. These ensure continuous business operations in the event of network / backend outage for 3 days for thin clients and 1 day for ATVMs. The application rides on the Unified Ticketing Network (UTN) for the Passenger Reservation System and Unreserved Ticketing System.

    The printing device is a customized Dot Matrix Printer. However, in case of ATVMs, Thermal Printers are being used. CRIS works as the coordinating agency for procurement of peripheral equipment for the Zonal Railways. For details on current procurements, please go to our section on Tender Notices.

    The picture here shows a typical ATVM kiosk. The kiosks have a touch screen based user interface, a smart card reader, a thin client and a thermal printer.

    The heads of the Porsche and Piech families that control the majority of Volkswagen Group have signalled their support for the troubled company, which has been rocked by the “dieselgate” emissions scandal.

    VW chief executive Matthias Müller was joined by Wolfgang Porsche, chairman of Porsche Autmobil Holding SE, which controls 52.2pc of the car company. when he spoke to thousands of staff at the company’s Wolfsburg base this morning.

    “The Porsche and Piech families support job security at Volkswagen (Other OTC: VLKAF – news ) through a stable and successful company,” said Mr Porsche. “We know jobs are an invaluable asset. And this asset can’t simply be gambled away.”

    He was joined by fellow Porsche Automobil executive Hans Michel Piech, grandson of VW co-founder Ferdinand Porsche. Louise Kiesling, another descendant of the founding families, was also expected to be at the meeting.

    Their appearance marks the first time the powerful family has spoken out since the “dieselgate” scandal broke in September, when VW was found to have fitted “defeat devices” to almost 500,000 cars in the US that allowed them to beat pollution tests.

    The company later admitted as many as 11m cars worldwide could be affected, and started an internal investigation into how the scandal took place. This probe has since revealed that cars a further 800,000 cars, some of them petrol powered, had “irregularities” with their carbon dioxide emissions.

    The revelations cost former chief executive Martin Winterkorn his job and VW could face multi-billion euro fines, along with huge costs to rectify the issues. So far a €6.7bn provision has been taken, which pushed the company to its first quarterly loss in a decade.

    But many analysts think this could be the first in a series of such hits, with some putting a €30bn-plus price tag on resolving the problems.

    At an event held by the mayor of Wolfsburg on Tuesday night, Mr Porsche is reported to have indicated that they would support VW despite its troubles.

    “The Porsche and Piech families stand by Volkswagen. I am deeply convinced that Volkswagen will weather the current difficult situation. I will personally do my part,” Mr Porsche said, according to Bloomberg.

    His support comes at a critical time for the company. Official data on German car sales released on Wednesday showed that although VW remained the country’s biggest selling marque, new registrations dropped by 2pc in November. As a whole the market rose by 8.9pc.

    The day before the impact of the scandal was shown in US sales figures, where the number of buyers of VW Group cars which includes Audi – fell by 24.7pc on the previous month.

    The company’s troubles have also forced it impose a two-week work stoppage in Wolfsburg over Christmas as VW tries to reduce inventories in the face of falling sales.

    The car-maker’s once all-powerful unions have seen their authority reduced by the scandal, amid concerns there could be compulsory job losses.

    However, Mr Porsche’s address appears to have eased those fears. The VW works council had asked the family to speak out about jobs at the company and backed his statement.

    VW is also reported to have secured a €20bn bridging loan with a syndicate of banks to help it bear the costs of the emissions scandal.

    The car maker has also had its credit rating cut by Standard & Poor’s for the second time since the crisis erupted. On Tuesday night the rating agency downgraded Volkswagen to BBB+ from A- with a negative outlook. The move reflects VW’s “tarnished reputation and brand image”, S

    The heads of the Porsche and Piech families that control the majority of Volkswagen Group have signalled their support for the troubled company, which has been rocked by the “dieselgate” emissions scandal.

    VW chief executive Matthias Müller was joined by Wolfgang Porsche, chairman of Porsche Autmobil Holding SE, which controls 52.2pc of the car company. when he spoke to thousands of staff at the company’s Wolfsburg base this morning.

    “The Porsche and Piech families support job security at Volkswagen (Other OTC: VLKAF – news ) through a stable and successful company,” said Mr Porsche. “We know jobs are an invaluable asset. And this asset can’t simply be gambled away.”

    He was joined by fellow Porsche Automobil executive Hans Michel Piech, grandson of VW co-founder Ferdinand Porsche. Louise Kiesling, another descendant of the founding families, was also expected to be at the meeting.

    Their appearance marks the first time the powerful family has spoken out since the “dieselgate” scandal broke in September, when VW was found to have fitted “defeat devices” to almost 500,000 cars in the US that allowed them to beat pollution tests.

    The company later admitted as many as 11m cars worldwide could be affected, and started an internal investigation into how the scandal took place. This probe has since revealed that cars a further 800,000 cars, some of them petrol powered, had “irregularities” with their carbon dioxide emissions.

    The revelations cost former chief executive Martin Winterkorn his job and VW could face multi-billion euro fines, along with huge costs to rectify the issues. So far a €6.7bn provision has been taken, which pushed the company to its first quarterly loss in a decade.

    But many analysts think this could be the first in a series of such hits, with some putting a €30bn-plus price tag on resolving the problems.

    At an event held by the mayor of Wolfsburg on Tuesday night, Mr Porsche is reported to have indicated that they would support VW despite its troubles.

    “The Porsche and Piech families stand by Volkswagen. I am deeply convinced that Volkswagen will weather the current difficult situation. I will personally do my part,” Mr Porsche said, according to Bloomberg.

    His support comes at a critical time for the company. Official data on German car sales released on Wednesday showed that although VW remained the country’s biggest selling marque, new registrations dropped by 2pc in November. As a whole the market rose by 8.9pc.

    The day before the impact of the scandal was shown in US sales figures, where the number of buyers of VW Group cars which includes Audi – fell by 24.7pc on the previous month.

    The company’s troubles have also forced it impose a two-week work stoppage in Wolfsburg over Christmas as VW tries to reduce inventories in the face of falling sales.

    The car-maker’s once all-powerful unions have seen their authority reduced by the scandal, amid concerns there could be compulsory job losses.

    However, Mr Porsche’s address appears to have eased those fears. The VW works council had asked the family to speak out about jobs at the company and backed his statement.

    VW is also reported to have secured a €20bn bridging loan with a syndicate of banks to help it bear the costs of the emissions scandal.

    The car maker has also had its credit rating cut by Standard & Poor’s for the second time since the crisis erupted.
