Associate in science degree

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree program is designed to meet the needs of mid-career adults in a wide range of applied fields. Students select the option, or major, that matches their expertise or profession.

Applied Science Degree Credits

Students usually enter with many of the credits in the career track completed, but not always, from military or civilian training. If the option has not already been completed, students may often use Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) to gain college credit for their knowledge. While there are some examinations in auto mechanics and electronics, there are few distance learning opportunities in most of the AAS career tracks. Credits in general education and free electives may be earned by a wide variety of methods.

While the Associate in Applied Science is considered to be a terminal degree, many but not all of the credits may be applied to one of the University s baccalaureate degrees. Students may earn an Applied Science Associate degree in one of the following areas of study:

With the exception of the Dental Hygiene program, all Associate in Applied Science degree programs are 60-credit programs.

The Associate of Science degree (AS-T) is designed for students who plan to transfer to science programs at four-year institutions after completing the first two years of study at Pierce. The degree enables students to fulfill the undergraduate general education requirements of most four-year science degree programs. Students are responsible for checking specific major requirements of baccalaureate institutions in the year prior to transferring.

There are two degree track options:

  • Track One is for science students who wish to focus on biological and environmental/resource sciences, geology and earth science, or chemistry.
  • Track Two is for students who wish to focus on engineering, computer science, physics, or atmospheric science.

The Body Clock: Eating Schedule Is Equally Important As Sleep Cycle For Maintaining Rhythm

Planning out healthy meals throughout the day is a luxury some of us cannot afford. More and more people are skipping meals, eating outside the home, on the go, later in the day, and more irregularly due to more shift work and social jetlag — when someone has different sleeping patterns on weekends and weekdays. It would be nice to have a flexible meal schedule and healthy food on hand, but what’s more important in the long run: what we eat or when we eat it?

In two separate papers published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. researchers from King’s College London, Newcastle University, University of Surrey, and Nestlé Research Centre examine how our metabolic processes can alter or influence our internal clock when the timing, size, and quality of our meals start to go haywire.

“Whilst we have a much better understanding today of what we should be eating, we are still left with the question as to which meal should provide us with the most energy,” said Dr. Gerda Pot, Visiting Lecturer in the Diabetes and Nutritional Sciences Division at King’s College London, in a statement .

Shift Work

Pot and her colleagues combined data from a number of dietary studies with global differences in eating habits. Studies continually show how shift workers face an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Alternating between irregular and around-the-clock shifts cause a disruption in our circadian rhythm, and appetite, digestion, and metabolic processes are highly dependent on its 24-hour clock.

Social Jetlag

The researchers estimate that social jetlag affects more than 80 percent of people in central Europe, especially those living in urban areas. By staying up late and sleeping in on weekends, then going to bed early to wake up early during the week, we set up a mismatch between our circadian rhythm and our social sleep schedule. Over time, this imbalance causes metabolic changes that lead to obesity, heart disease, and cancer.

When We Should Eat

Different eating patterns from around the world depend on personal preference and local culture. For example, the French place their importance on pleasurable and social eating, which is why many people in France and the Mediterranean region consider lunch the most important meal of the day. Food choices in central England, on the other hand, reflect individual preferences and convenience. This often translates into skipping meals, calorie-dense snack foods, and a higher consumption of ready-made and fast-food meals.

Currently in both the United States and the United Kingdom, energy intake from food consumption tends to increase throughout the day. Breakfast provides the lowest amount of energy while dinner provides the highest. This same shift toward smaller breakfasts and bigger dinners has started in France in recent years as work patterns have changed. So are the people of France at risk for an obesity epidemic similar to the one seen in the U.S.?

Is Breakfast King?

In a recently concluded study. researchers from Umea University asked 889 16-year-old students about their breakfast eating habits, propensity to skip meals, and how important sweetness was to their enjoyment of food. Nine percent of the students practiced poor breakfast habits. When the research team caught back up with the participants at the age of 43, they found that people who skipped breakfast as kids were 68 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome.

“There seems to be some truth in the saying ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper,’ however, this warrants further investigation,” Pot added. “Although the evidence suggests that eating more calories later in the evening is associated with obesity, we are still far from understanding whether our energy intake should be distributed equally across the day or whether breakfast should contribute the greatest proportion of energy, followed by lunch and dinner.”

When We Should Work Out

Sleep and meals aren’t the only things whose timing influences our health — the time of the day we exercise also plays a role. Just like our dieting habits, when we work helps determine how effective exercise can be. However, there seems to be no clear winner between working out in the morning or at night. Both have their benefits: Working out in the evening is best for boosting muscle strength and size, while exercising in the morning helps with losing weight, improving sleeping, and reducing stress.

About – UConn Math Actuarial Science – UCONN #actuarial #science #programs #online



The University of Connecticut Actuarial Program in the Department of Mathematics began in 1976 with the creation of two new courses Theory of Interest and Life Contingencies. The department also began offering the professional actuarial exams at that time. From the very first, the program grew rapidly. In the spring of 1979, the first majors in Mathematics/Actuarial Science were graduated. In 1984 we added a Concentration in Actuarial Science at the Master s level. As of 2006, we have awarded 6 Doctoral degrees in Mathematics with a thesis topic in Actuarial Science. We have also added a Professional Master s in Applied Financial Mathematics that serves a dozen students a year. A Center for Actuarial Studies promotes student participation in research projects on real-world problems.

Today, the program has approximately 275 undergraduates, 40 master s students and 6 Ph.D. students. We estimate that, since its inception, our program has contributed over 500 baccalaureate and 350 master s graduates to the work force. Our Ph.D. alumni and their thesis titles can be found here .

The primary goal of our program is to provide students with a sound foundation in actuarial science and to prepare them for the examinations administered by the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society, with the objective that each student passes at least two exams before graduating.

There is a strong demand for our graduates in the large financial services industry in Connecticut and the surrounding northeast. The quality of our students is recognized by grants from our corporate sponsors. The funds from these grants is used primarily to award undergraduate scholarships and enhances the program in many ways.

The UConn Actuarial Science Program has developed a close working relationship with insurance companies and consulting firms in the Northeast. Our actuarial fraternity, Gamma Iota Sigma. sponsors an actuarial Career Fair each fall. We also arrange on-campus interviews with our corporate sponsors. Students with good grades and have passed at least one actuarial exam usually are able find full-time employment or summer internships.

Master of Science – Physician Assistant Program

This exciting, twenty eight month Physician Assistant M.S. program admits only one class in January each year and will include courses throughout that period. The first fourteen months is spent mainly in didactic classroom experiences, while the second fourteen months focuses on experiential clinical rotations in hospital and various outpatient settings.

Summer Scholars and their faculty mentors will showcase their research and celebrate scholarship at the undergraduate level. UB alumnus Adam Pèrez, Ph.D. (’10) will join the Symposium as keynote speaker.

Keynote Speaker: Adam Pérez, Ph.D.

Dr. Pérez obtained his B.Sc. in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry, from the University of Bridgeport in 2010 and then went on to obtain his Ph. D. in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology at The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Pérez is passionate about science outreach and communication and has participated in numerous programs, including the ConnCAP Pre-Engineering program and the NSF GK-12 fellowship. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Louisville working in the Dr. John P. Wise Laboratory of Genetic and Environmental Toxicology. In January 2018, he will be starting a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at the startup company Photanol B. V. and the Universiteit van Amsterdam.

What is the Summer Scholars Program?

The Summer Scholars Program was launched this year with a team of faculty who are committed to enculturate interested students into the research experience within their discipline of interest. In addition, these Summer Scholars are attending weekly workshops by UB faculty, staff, and community partners, participating in journal clubs to enhance critical thinking and analytic skills, attending Research in Progress (RIP) meetings led by UB biomedical and biobehavioral faculty, and participating in an academic and professional development series on planning a research career, graduate school admissions, and other topics of interest.
