Doctoral Programs

Welcome to Concordia University Chicago and thank you for your interest in applying to one of our doctoral programs. All documents relating to admission should be submitted to Concordia University’s Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services prior to the deadline for your anticipated term of enrollment. See your degree of interest on this Web site for application and file completion deadlines.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
  • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
  • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
  • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
  • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
  • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

All documents should be submitted to:

Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services
Concordia University Chicago
7400 Augusta Street
River Forest, IL 60305

The office fax number is (708) 209-3454.

Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

Additional Testing

Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.

Pending Status

Doctoral and international students are not eligible for Pending Status .

International Students

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

  • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
  • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
  • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
  • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. I-20 forms may be issued only after University acceptance is granted and will remain in effect only for students who continue to make satisfactory progress as full-time students in an accepted university program. The program length may vary for each student.

Can Laser Eye Surgery Correct Reading Vision? #does #lasik #work #for #reading

Laser Eye Surgery For Reading

As we get older there is a natural deterioration of our reading vision and the name given to this is presbyopia. Presbyopia typically occurs between the ages of 40 – 45 years old and is the same for both men and women.

Presbyopia is caused by the natural loss of the focussing power of the lens within our eyes. As is the case in a camera, the role of the lens within our eye is to focus on whatever it is that we are looking at. As we get older our lens loses its elasticity and the muscles which control it lose their effectiveness, both of which result in us needing glasses for close vision tasks.

There are a few different ways in which presbyopia may affect your vision depending on whether you are long sighted, short sighted or have had perfect eyesight right up until your 40’s.

How Presbyopia Affects Your Vision:

  • Perfect eyesight all your life: If you have had perfect eyesight all your life this means that your eyes naturally focus light exactly onto the retina and hence you see perfectly. However as you approach your mid 40’s, the lens in your eye loses its focussing power and you will start holding reading material further away to try and read it. The reason your distance vision is not affected is because to see things clearly far away, the lens in your eye hardly needs to exert any focusing power at all. However for close vision tasks you require your lens to focus but this becomes more difficult as the lens ages. The closer something is to you the more focussing power is needed and this explains why people hold things further away when they try to read. Such people will end up needing reading glasses for the rest of their life but may continue to have perfect distance vision.

  • Short sighted: Generally speaking when you are short sighted you will always be able to see things up close when you take your distance vision glasses off. How close you need to hold things depends on how short sighted you are. If you are very short sighted e.g. -10.00 you would need to hold a book 10 cm away from your eyes to read it. If you are -2.50 then you would be able to read something at 40 cm which is about the perfect reading distance. However as you get older and the lens in your eye loses its focusing power, you will find you will need to take your distance vision spectacles off more and more when you need to read something. This initially may only be when you are reading very fine print or when the lighting is not good, but as presbyopia fully progresses you will have to take your glasses off every time you need to see/read anything up close. When it gets to this level, most people opt for varifocals in their glasses which enables distance, intermediate and near vision all to be clear simultaneously. Those people wearing contact lenses will need to start wearing multifocal contact lenses or more commonly monovision contact lens correction.

  • Long sighted: Most people who are long sighted will typically initially only need spectacles for near vision but as they get older their distance vision will also start to deteriorate.

In order to treat presbyopia there are a number of laser eye surgery techniques available and these are explained below:

The 5 Main Ways Laser Eye Surgery Can Correct Presbyopia:

  • Perfect Distance vision with reading spectacles as required: This effectively means that the surgeon will correct your distance vision so you do not need to wear spectacles or contact lenses to walk around in, drive etc. but you will still require reading spectacles for close tasks.
  • Monovision laser eye surgery: This simply means that laser eye surgery corrects one eye to see perfectly in the distance and the other eye to see perfectly for near vision.
  • CK Surgery: This is a non-invasive technique which uses radio waves (instead of laser) to correct your near vision.
  • Kamra Vision. Kamra vision uses a tiny implant within your cornea to significantly improve your reading vision.
  • Laser blended vision: You can read about this here .

Psychic Tests

The following are psychic tests and games designed to measure your degree of psychic abilities (or spiritual gifts) or to be used as tools to develop your psychic talents. However, these tests will not provide you the ultimate answer about whether if you’re psychic or not, so please, don’t send us emails about the results, since some are rather subjective.

If you’re psychic (more than your average person, that is), you should know it. These are for entertainment purposes, not to be taken so seriously. They may help you confirm what you already know, but real life is the only real test. No reproduction of any part without permission.

Online Tarot Reading

Tarot cards are a highly symbolic deck of cards consisting of 22 Major Arcana cards, and 56 Minor Arcana cards. Arcana means secrets or mysteries, which is why the ability to decipher the symbols is half the gift of the translator.

Zener Cards

Zener Cards were used by the famous parapsychologist J.B. Rhine in his studies of ESP and have now become the standard for such extra sensorial tests. There are some variations of the Zener cards test, some are using a closed deck of cards (5 groups of each 5 cards) or open deck (each cards are randomly selected from a deck shuffled at each turns). The following test is an open deck, since a card is randomly generated from a shuffled deck every time.

Remote Viewing with a Picture

Remote viewing differentiates itself from other psychic abilities in that it follows a set of protocols. Remote viewing was originally termed by parties associated with labs and universities and they wanted a controlled environment using strict protocols and procedures. They wanted it to take this ability from back alley psychic shops to procedural processes in controlled conditions. One example is that remote viewing uses a blind target or items to psychically view.

Telekinesis Test

This is a simple telekinesis test inspired by coin tossing contests, it consists of an algorithm that will randomly generate zeroes and ones, instead of heads or tails. Mathematical laws dictate that over a certain period of time, the average between the number of 0s and 1s should be 50% / 50%, and the longer the time period, the closer the results should be to this figure. If someone tried to telekinetically influence the outcome of those coin flippings, we could possibly calculate his telekinesis ability by observing how far the results are from the statistical average.

Guess the Word Quizz

The following psychic test is not based on any scientific or academic research but it can help determine if you have some talents towards remote viewing (or simply guessing) a word rather than a picture, as some people may have greater literal talent than visual. We added it mostly for fun.

Guess the Random Number

The following psychic test is not based on any scientific or academic research either but it can help determine if you have some ESP talents towards guessing a number. The number is between 0 and 9. Like in quizz shows or puzzles, the number is displayed by an asterisk. As in the Zener Cards test, the higher the number of sessions, the more meaningful the total score is.

ESP Test

Some people know things before they are going to happen. They can sense who is on the phone, what someone will say, or some of their dreams will come true. These people are known as psychics. We all have some extra sensory ability and this test will let you know how much ESP you possess!

Sensitivity Test

This test is just to see where you are at, in terms of how sensitive you are to subtle perceptions and energy. People with a high level of sensitivity are usually natural psychics because that’s what being psychic is all about: the ability to pick up subtle information not normally detectible by the other five senses. This information is all around us. It’s just a matter of who in sensitive enough to pick it up. This is similar to low level sound frequencies that humans can’t hear, but dogs and other animals can pick up perfectly. There are of course exceptions. Natural psychics do exist who possess open feelers that have done little to no work to develop them and were just born that way.

Death of man near Pagoda investigated as homicide

Man dies after attack near Pagoda in.

READING, Pa. – The death of a Berks County man near the Pagoda is being investigated as a case of homicide, law enforcement authorities announced Thursday afternoon.

Donavin Yenser died Thursday morning. He had been hospitalized since early Tuesday morning, when Reading police found the Exeter Township man bleeding off Duryea Drive near the Pagoda atop Mount Penn.

That was his hangout spot, said his mom, Kristina Miller. His friends were there. They were there all the time.

RPD officers had responded to the area for the report of a group of people assaulting a man.

They just brutally beat him with objects to the head and threw him over the guardrail and left him for dead, said Yenser s aunt, Amanda Kohler.

I can t believe anyone would do this to him, and I don t know why they had to, said Gary Kohler, Yenser s grandfather. I just hope they catch these guys.

Investigators have not determined whether Yenser s death was the result of the assault or the fall down an embankment to where he was found.

Police have also not provided any details about what led to the assault, but they did tell 69 News that they are reviewing video recorded by surveillance cameras at the Pagoda.

To my understanding, Miller said, he was in a car. They broke the windows, pulled him out of the car and beat him.

One of the three friends Yenser was with atop Mount Penn told 69 News he wishes he could have done more to help.

We saw him being pushed over the guardrail in front of us, said the friend, who did not want to give his name. That s when I yelled for him to run down to the next street, where we would pick him up. We drove down and he never made it. He was laying over the top of a rock, bleeding from the back of his head.

Yenser was rushed to the trauma center at Reading Hospital, where he later died, but not before his mother got to spend Wednesday night by his side in the hospital.

The nurses let me lay in bed with Donavin, his mom said. That was the best ending I could ve had with him, just holding him and loving him.

She said she won t take down her Christmas tree this year. Decorating it with him this past Sunday is the last memory she has with her only son.

Yenser worked the past five baseball seasons as a concessions employee for the Reading Fightin Phils, the team confirmed Thursday.

He s 18. He had his whole life ahead of him, Kohler said. He donated his organs, which makes us feel better to know that he s going to live on and help other lives.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral costs.

The service is set for Saturday, December 17, in Leesport.

Anyone with information about the case can contact Crime Alert Berks County via anonymous text to 847411. starting the message with keyword alertberks. or by calling 877-373-9913 .
