Featured: What’s the best tyre type for winter 2017?

With the cold weather quickly approaching, should you be fitting a winter, all season or summer tyre?

I take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of the four main tyre types, and recommend the best in each category.

2017 AC Winter Tyre Test – 185/65 R15

For 2017 the Polish publication AutoCentrum has tested eight studless winter tyres in 185/65 R15. As with the other winter tyre tests we’ve featured across 2017, AutoCentrum tests the winter tyres in the dry, wet and snow, but also includes ice testing, a first for 2017.

Six of the tyres on test are European winter tyres which are available to the UK market, and two of the tyres (Debica Frigo 2 and Sava Eskimo Ice) are full nordic friction winter tyres, so it should give us a good overview of how these two different types of tyres perform, and why Nordic winter tyres aren’t suitable for the UK market.

General Grabber AT3 and X3 – Tested

If you’re one of the many SUV / 4×4 owners in the UK, the chances are you’re on a regular summer tyre which will offer very little performance on surfaces as simple wet grass or loose dirt.

Car reviews and ratings

With normal 4×4 tyres being designed almost entirely for on-road useage, what happens if you need to use your 4×4 on a surface that isn’t tarmac or concrete? Turning up at the shooting club in your 100,000 Range Rover only to get stuck in the grassy car park would result in many jokes at your expense in the pub, or getting stuck down a muddy trail near a fishing lake could result in your day of leisure being wasted trying to get your vehicle mobile again.

2017 Auto Bild Winter Tyre Test

The 2017 Auto Bild winter tyre test started with fifty 225/50 R17 winter tyre patterns which Auto Bild tested for wet braking performance, and then dropped the worse twenty tyres from the test.

The next phase was testing the remaining thirty patterns for snow braking, which was then combined with the wet braking distances to allow the ten worst tyres to be dropped. This left twenty winter tyres which Auto Bild regarded as the best winter tyres on the market, and deemed worthy enough to take through to the full testing.

As ever with Auto Bild testing, they undertake all the usual dry, wet and snow testing, but also including important factors such as wear and cost per 1,000 km, which a lot of tests are unable to include.

The results as closer than ever, and you’d be hard pressed to classify any of the top 10 tyres as bad tyres, but three in particular rose to the top.

Nokian Tyres are the best tyre manufacturer you might not have heard of

If you’ve not shopped for winter tyres, you can be forgiven for having never heard of Nokian Tyres.

Car reviews and ratings

Nokian Tyres are a Finnish tyre manufacturer, and in markets where winter tyres are a common fitment, they are considered a premium manufacturer. Their winter and all season products rival the likes of Michelin and Continental.

In the UK they have a bit of a cult following, with those “in the know” swearing by the Nordic brand for both summer and winter rubber. The ultra high performance Nokian zLine as both excellent reviews on Tyre Reviews, and when tested by Auto Zeitung in 2017 it beat tyres by Bridgestone, Hankook, Avon, Vredestein and Falken!

2017 All Season Tyre Test

The 2017 Auto Bild all season tyre test has tested ten 205/55 R16 all season tyres touring tyres, using a VW Golf. This is also the first test to include the new Continental AllSeasonContact tyre.

2017 All Season VS Winter Tyre Test

The German publication Auto Zeitung have just published their 2017 all season tyre test, and it might be the most UK relevant tyre test we’ve ever seen.

First, they’re testing in the most popular 205/55 R16 size using a FWD Audi A3, which represents a large slice of our car market. Then, they’ve managed to include ten all season patterns, which is more than most all season tyre tests manage, but the icing on the cake is the winter tyre included for reference is the multiple award winning Continental WinterContact TS 860.

2017 AMS Performance 18 inch Winter Tyre Test

The first winter tyre test of 2017 has been published! The German publication Auto Motor und Sport [AMS] have tested ten ultra high performance winter tyres in 225/40 R18. This extremely popular 18″ tyre sizes is fitted to performance saloons such as the Audi A4, Skoda Octavia VRS, and the 232 bhp BMW 430i Grand Coupe used for this testing.

Michelin CrossClimate vs Primacy 3 – Long Term Review

In Spring 2015, Michelin unveiled a new breed of all season tyre, the Crossclimate, which promised to address the shortcomings of traditional all season tyres in the warmer, dryer months for places such as most of the uk and areas of europe. The remit being to provide the performance of a summer tyre whilst being able to conquer the relatively small degree of snow, ice and cold experienced during the winter months.

Around the same time Goodyear also released the vector 4 seasons Gen 2, a completely new successor to the universally acclaimed Vector 4 seasons, which also promised to address the balance of all season tyre performance.

Tyre Reviews decided to investigate further, culminating in the ‘Does a true all season tyre exist?’ test. The outcome of this was that the CrossClimate genuinely did prove itself to live up to the claims, and was way ahead of the Vector in the dry, being almost identical to the summer tyre.

Continental AllSeasonContact – Press Release

Continental have officially announced availability of the new Continental AllSeasonContact in the UK!

Could this be the Germans manufacturers answer to the hugely successful Michelin CrossClimate? We’ll be sure to publish a full test as soon as we get try the new tyre, but for now here’s the press release.

GT Radial – A Brand to Watch

Giti are an Asian manufacturer of car, 4×4 and truck tyres, with their head offices located in Singapore. The brand originally started as a budget brand, but their growth pattern has now established them in the mid range sector. They’re in the top 10 tyre manufacturers globally with revenue in 2014 of $3.45 billion, have over 33,000 employees in 20 countries, and 4 R D centres in Germany, America, Indonesia and China.

Auto Racing Helmet Ratings

Auto racing helmets are rated by the Snell Foundation as either SA, M, or K rated.

Snell SA Rated Helmets:

Snell “SA” (Sports Application) rated professional helmets are designed for auto racing and provide extreme impact resistance and higher fire protection.

Snell “M” (Motorcycle) rated helmets are designed for motorcycling and other motorsports. They offer slightly less protection than SA rated helmets.

Snell “K” (Karting) rated helmets are designed for Karting applications. They are subjected to the same test standards as SA helmets except the do not require a fire retardant interior.

What are the key differences between SA and M Rated Helmets:

– SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not.

– SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.

– SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets aren’t street legal).

How do I know if my helmet meets the necessary Snell requirements for the organizations that I race with?

Always check your club rule book to determine what helmet specifications they require. Most clubs seem to allow you to use the current Snell specification, as well as the previous Snell specification. So, in that case, for the 2016 season, you could use Snell M2010/SA2010 or Snell M2015/SA2015 rated helmets. Snell M2005/SA2005 helmets would not meet requirements after October 1, 2015. The bottom line is. read your rulebook carefully.

Also, if you are considering the purchase of a Snell “M” rated helmet, be sure that your club will allow them. SCCA Solo does allow Snell “M” rated helmets, although some organizations that run high speed events will require Snell “SA” rated helmets. We recommend Snell “SA” rated helmets because they will be legal for any type automotive activity you participate in.

What is the current Snell rating?

New ratings typically come out every 5 years. As of October 2015, the current Snell rating is 2015. We currently carry Snell SA2015 helmets. Snell M2010 and Snell SA2010 rated helmets are no longer available.

When will Snell SA2015 Rated Helmets be available?

Snell SA2015 Certified helmets will be available for sale on or after October 1, 2015, when the new standard takes effect. You can read the official Snell statement here.

Where can I get more info on Snell helmet ratings?

Check out the Snell Memorial Foundation website for some very good helmet information.

Reviews & Ratings for Best Luxury SUVs

Best Luxury SUVs Reviewed

Best Luxury SUVs

There are certain qualities that one expects to receive when they purchase a luxury SUV. Many features that are additional options on other vehicles typically come standard on those in the luxury segment. Technology features are innovative, engines are powerful, seats are amazingly comfortable and the ride is flawless. It’s not easy to be labeled a contender in this segment, and it is certainly a challenge to make the top 10 list, but the vehicles below have what it takes to top the charts.

One of the best luxury SUVs hands down is the Acura RDX. A potent but fuel-efficient V6 engine, exceptional crash test ratings and an unbelievably refined ride helps this vehicle make the list. The RDX is described as being freakishly agile, and with its dual cockpit dash design and optional features like solar-sensing climate control and 15GB of music storage, it’s hard to resist.

Exterior styling alone could earn the Infiniti EX35 a position on the list of best luxury SUVs. but this crossover has more to offer than what you see a first glance. A 325 horsepower V6 engine, dual-polished exhaust tips, intelligent all-wheel drive and a superior turning ratio contribute to performance, while supple leather and optional Maple interior accents add to the rewinding atmosphere inside the cabin.

Lexus RX is one to turn to when you demand a luxurious and plush cabin. These vehicles come with a generous number of standard features with the Lexus Remote Touch interface being a highlight. Volvo XC60 would be an excellent runner-up to the Lexus RX, if it offered as much rear seat legroom.

Audi Q7 is next on the list. It delivers lightning fast acceleration with its supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and full-time all-wheel drive. The Q7 receives rave reviews for its use of top-notch materials throughout the cabin, ad one can’t help but get excited over options like 21-inch wheels, a corner-view camera and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround sound audio system.

Thanks to its refined interior, athletic performance and sporty styling, BMW X5 makes the list, which wasn’t easy to do against rival Porsche Cayenne. This midsize crossover offers a strong 300 horsepower V6 as well as an aggressive 400 horsepower V8, and comes with innovative safety features, including the BMW Assist emergency communications system.

The Infiniti QX56 is next with a V8 engine that can tow 8,500 pounds. A Hydraulic Body Motion Control System ensures a smooth ride with no body roll while a roomy cabin provides generous space for eight passengers and a ton of cargo room.

The seven-passenger Mercedes-Benz GL-Class comes next with its wickedly fast acceleration, impressive fuel economy and an enormous list of features, including the smart COMAND interface. This vehicle has been fully redesigned for 2013, which increases size and brings new engines and an abundance of options, like illuminated running boards, rear sunshades and a heated windshield washer reservoir.

The Cadillac SRX is a compelling choice with its classy cabin redesign, capable handling, fantastic braking capabilities and exceptional crash test ratings. Cadillac ‘s CUE infotainment and control system is a definite highlight. For an SUV with a little more room, the Cadillac Escalade gets an honorable mention.

A list of best luxurious SUVs wouldn’t be complete without the Land Rover Range Rover. Its unbelievable off-road capabilities, powerful V8 engine and world class interior puts it in a league of its own. This is another vehicle fully redesigned for 2013, giving this fourth generation model an all-aluminum unibody platform, a revised rear end, slimmer side mirrors and new headlights. Do take a look at the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque as well. Last but not least is the Lexus GX 460, offering three rows of seating, an impressive 92 cubic feet of cargo space. It delivers responsive handling and a smooth ride, and features a strong V8 engine and some irresistible options, including a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system.

Best Paint Scratch Remover

Let s face it, no matter how well you try to take care of your car, scratches are bound to happen. Whether this happens due to careless people in parking lots or something as simple as accidentally grazing your car with a sharp object, scratches on the paint show up sooner or later.

While deeper scratches extending into the bare metal of your car require professional attention to repair, lighter ones can often be taken care of with a good scratch remover. These products work by polishing the surface of the scratch until it blends in with the rest of the paint, making it nearly unnoticeable. However, the quality of the repair varies depending on the person performing the repair.

Budget Car Sales

“The Kia Store East has moved into the lot where budget. “

“If you enjoy high pressure sales tactics and. “

If you enjoy high pressure sales tactics and stereotypical used car salesmen at their absolute worst, you’ll love Budget. You can expect up to three sleezy salesmen JOGGING toward you the moment you step onto their lot. These are the worst kind of vultures. Lots of handshakes and BS. Not finding what you’re looking for? No problem. They’ll find you something better! After all, you didn’t really want one of those silly Hondas because as all well informed buyers know, they are the least dependable cars ever built. So don’t worry about deciding on a car now, wait untill you get to Budget and they will choose one for you.

Our neighbors, an elderly couple in their 80’s, actually got suckered into buying a car from these slime balls. Appearantly, when they were told that no Cadillacs were in stock the sales jerk marched them into the office and began to play the numbers game with a Grand Marquis. They said no and got up to leave when the sales manager jumped between them and the door and actually screamed at them. They were so frightened by this guy that they bought the car. Lies, intimidation, screaming. All in a days work for the guys at Budget.

Personally, I never made it as far as the sales office. I was trying to leave after what was already a bad experience when I noticed that the vultures had all flown away. WRONG. They just went for backup! I’m almost to my car when I hear the distinct sound of desperate footsteps sprinting and a fake Rolex rattling. I kept walking without looking back. Seconds later I see what seems to be a streak of glowing polyester blow past me. You guessed it! Standing between me and my car is a car salesman with his hand extended. Still, I keep walking. He begins to raise his voice. Still walking toward my car I finally say I’m not interested in buying a car. This seems to enrage him. He then jumps 6 inches from my face and begins to stare me down. I politely asked him to step away from my personal space to which he replied You a f**kin’ racist You see, I’m white and didn’t give him the commission to which he was entitled just because I walked onto the Budget lot, therefore I’m a racist. And by the way, this guy was the manager.

I can’t give you any solid information on information on the service dept. but can’t imagine that it would be any better.

Convertible buying guide

Getting started

Buying a convertible has little to do with practicality and everything to do with enjoying the open-air driving experience. In years past, convertibles were fair-weather-only cars, but modern convertibles require far fewer compromises than the ragtops of yore. Many models can shed their tops in 25 seconds or less, and some convertibles even allow you to raise and lower the top while driving at slow speeds (a nice feature if you’re lowering the top when stopped at a light and the light turns green).

Several convertibles feature a retractable hardtop, a folding metal roof that stows in the trunk at the push of a button. With the top raised, these hardtop models minimize some inherent convertible compromises by providing better insulation from noise and weather, increased interior security, improved visibility, and better resistance to fading and wear than a car with a soft top. But when lowered, they can consume much of the available trunk space.

Check our Car Brand Report Cards to learn more about each automaker.

That said, today’s soft tops are much better insulated against noise and weather, and all now come with glass rear windows instead of the flimsy, scratch-prone plastic windows that were common years ago.

What hasn’t changed is that soft-top convertibles remain more susceptible to break-in and theft than hardtop vehicles. An opportunistic thief with a sharp knife can easily have at the contents of your convertible. Soft-top convertibles also require more diligence to protect them from the elements, and some automakers warn against taking convertibles through automatic car washes with brushes or high-pressure water jets.

Since a car gets much of its structural rigidity from the roof, convertibles require extra bracing to minimize wear-inducing structural flex. Today’s convertibles are better engineered and tend to have more rigid construction, which minimizes body flex and improves handling.

Note that not all convertibles are true convertibles. The Fiat 500C has a full-size sunroof that slides as far back as a convertible top, but the side roof rails always stay fixed in place. This design benefits from added rigidity and a top that can be opened and closed at highway speeds, but it doesn’t deliver the same open-air feel as an ordinary convertible.

Key things to consider

To narrow your choices, decide first how you plan to use the car. Are you looking for a true sports car or a four-seater that happens to have an opening roof? Is this a car that you plan to drive every day or just on sunny weekends? For an everyday car, comfort, convenience, and fuel economy are important considerations. If driving is your passion, the fun quotient might trump practicality.

As always, price is a key factor, and convertibles usually cost significantly more than an equivalent fixed-roof car. If your budget is modest, your choices will be commensurately limited, and a used model may be a good alternative. In the sporty-car arena, you’ll want to look at cars that focus on handling prowess, but for top-down cruising, ride comfort, wind noise, and back seat and trunk space are also important considerations.

The powertrains for convertibles usually range from small four-cylinder engines, as found in the Fiat 500C and Mini Cooper convertibles, up to the powerful V8s in American muscle cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. Fuel economy is typically worse with a drop-top than that of the fixed-roof version of the car due to the added weight, and driving with the top down may lower fuel economy even further.

Because top-down driving is the whole point of a convertible, the ease of deploying the top is crucial. Where available, choose a power top with a latch-free design. If the top does have latches, be sure to try them out at the dealerships”some latch designs can easily break fingernails, while others require the strength of Hercules to muscle the top closed. Some power top designs can be raised and lowered when the car is moving at low speeds, a very useful feature. Among those few models with a manual top, some let you undo a latch or two and toss the roof back, while others make you get out of the car and fiddle with the folded roof. Simpler tops are better.

Top Small car Ratings #used #auto #sales

#small cars

Small car buying guide

Getting started

For tasks such as commuting, running errands, and zipping around town, a small car is often the most practical choice. Automakers are constantly lavishing more attention on packaging to maximize interior space. As a result, the latest batch of compact cars today have the rear-seat room you might expect in a midsized car of only a few years ago, while some smaller subcompacts still have reasonable space for two in back.

Check our Car Brand Report Cards to learn more about each automaker.

Many small cars have tall roofs, providing generous head room and an airy feel to the cabin. In particular, hatchbacks can be especially practical. Fold down the rear seatbacks and lift the hatch, and you can have similar interior functionality to a small SUV. The Honda Fit is a good example of clever use of space. Its fuel tank is far forward, freeing up space for rear seating and luggage. The lesson here is that practical considerations can benefit greatly by smart design.

When it comes to sporty cars. small is beautiful. Small cars are inherently light and nimble”two qualities that count a lot for spirited driving. Small sporty cars are commonly front-wheel drive, though there are rear-wheel drive choices, such as the BMW 2 Series Mazda Miata. Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. that are particularly rewarding. For those faced with winter traction challenges, there are a few models with all-wheel drive, such as the Subaru Impreza .
