On-line Credit Card Processing

There is, some people might argue, no real reason why either a person who enjoys shopping on-line or merchant who accepts credit cards on-line should really have to care about the details of just how on-line credit card processing actually works. As long as the transaction is secure, the merchant gets their money and the customer gets their goods then what else is there to care about?

Actually it is a good idea that both customer and merchant do understand what goes on in the few seconds between a customer hitting buy and a merchant accepting their credit card as payment and confirming the order. A buyer can gain insight into just how their transaction is processed and can see just how fraud is (hopefully) prevented while a merchant can finally understand just why he or she is paying those credit card processing fees every month. Here then is a brief guide to just how the virtual cash makes its way from the customer’s credit card to the merchant s bank account in what sometimes only takes a matter of a minute or so:

Starting at the Beginning – Making the Purchase

A customer browses through an e-commerce website and if at some point they do decide they want to make a purchase they will “place” it in their electronic shopping cart. There are a number of different shopping cart software programs available for merchants to choose from but most of them operate in the same way.

From a customer s point of view the most important considerations here are that the transaction will be secure and that they enter their information correctly. One way to determine that a site is secure is to look for a lock icon, either in the lower left or the lower right corner depending on your browser.

This is not just a picture though. If you click on the lock it will actually display the security settings of the website you are on. In addition when you have navigated to a secure payment page on any website the url should change, from “http” to “https”, with s standing for secure. Some sites will also display a sign that announces their secure status but that alone should not necessarily be trusted.

As a customer inputs their information it is important that it is all correct as even the tiniest mistake can result in the credit card being declined. The billing address must match the one on file with the credit card issuer exactly, because this is one of the things that will be used to determine whether or not a transaction can be approved.

Once the credit card and shipping information has been entered and the customer hits “enter”, from their point of view all there is to do now is sit and wait. The “money itself is very busy though and in most cases as it makes its way towards the merchant s bank account it shrinks as well.

The Journey Continues

After the customer has entered their information it is encrypted and then sent on to a payment gateway. From the payment gateway the information is sent to the institution that issued the credit card, where the details are checked and verified, including whether or not a person has sufficient funds available to them to make the purchase.

If the transaction is declined for any reason that information is relayed back to the payment gateway and the customer in front of the computer is asked to enter another form of payment (most businesses are not tactless enough to simply display “your card has been declined”!) If the transaction is approved though the customer is informed that their transaction is complete.

The money s journey is not complete though. Now that the transaction has been approved the money is sent to the website owner s merchant account. Once there it does get to rest for a day or so until it is withdrawn by the merchant and deposited in their traditional bank account.

There are fees involved at every stop of a credit card payment s journey. For example, if a customer pays $100 for their purchase only about 97 of those dollars will actually end up in the merchant s bank account after the payment gateway and assorted processors have taken their fees. It is for this reason that many smaller merchants, both on and off line still have minimum purchase amounts, to help cover those fees.

Recurring On Line Credit Card Purchases

For a great many people the days of writing checks to cover their bills and popping them in the mail are long gone. More and more companies are offering on-line bill pay and more and more customers are signing up. Many also offer a recurring authorization option, basically meaning that provided you have the funds on your credit or debit card to cover the charges you should never be late with a bill payment again.

Recurring on-line credit card payments are processed in the same way as one time payments and the same fees are charged to the merchant as although the credit card s validity has already been established that the funds are available has to be verified with the issuing bank every time the card is charged.

The Health Information Management online associate degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, health information management jobs are expected to increase by 15% from 2014-2024. The median income is $37,110, (2015 statistic), but additional credentials do add to the marketability of professionals.

The HIM program was established in 1998 as a traditional face-to-face program. In 2007-2008, the HIM program transitioned to an “online only” program to meet the needs of working students and professionals. The exception to online courses are the requirement for clinical courses completed onsite at a facility (HITT 2261 for the associate degree and HITT 1167 for Medical Coding Specialist certificate).

Many students admitted into the program have already completed one degree, and some have bachelors or masters degrees. The reason they pursue the associate degree training is to be eligible for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) upon graduation. The RHIT credential, and the RHIA credential for the bachelor’s degree, continue to be a preferred credential that healthcare employers seek when hiring Health Information Management candidates.

Students must be self-motivated, able to comprehend information in written form, and have the ability to communicate effectively both in written and verbal forms. Students should also be able to research websites, upload and download documents, post discussions, and access email. The courses are not self-paced, but have scheduled weekly due dates for assignments, discussions, and tests. Students should expect to spend 6 9 hours per 3 hour credit course to complete assignments, readings, and tests. Instructors are available to answer questions online or by phone related to course topics.

Skills Needed for Health Information Profession:

ability to analyze patient data for payment or registry information,
able to sit for long periods to complete work at work station
research and review patient information for regulatory compliance,
code and categorize patient information using standard coding systems.
communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other customers
ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
keyboarding skills and ability to use software systems, patient portals, etc.

Students may apply to the program in the semester they are completing the prerequisites. Final grades will be verified before admittance. Students are accepted prior to each semester (Summer, Fall, and Spring). Most of the students in the programs are considered part-time; taking 2 to 3 classes each semester since most have part-time or full-time jobs. There are approximately 70-80 students taking HIM classes or prerequisite courses to gain admission to the program.

Clinical Requirement Onsite:

Students that live outside the local Midland area are able to locate clinical sites in their area with the assistance of the HIM program. More information and directions are given to students upon acceptance into the program (courses related to associate degree and Medical Coding Specialist certificate). Prior to the clinical course, students are required to meet certain facility requirements to attend clinical practice. These include a background check, drug screen, immunizations, and other requirements based of the facility. More information provided prior to clinicals.

The amount of memory can be an important factor, especially if you intend to work on large images. A minimum of 512 MB of RAM is recommended, but the more RAM the better. Although ImageMagick runs well on a single core computer, it automagically runs in parallel on multi-core systems reducing run times considerably.

The Windows version of ImageMagick is self-installing. Simply click on the appropriate version below and it will launch itself and ask you a few installation questions. Versions with Q8 in the name are 8 bits-per-pixel component (e.g. 8-bit red, 8-bit green, etc.), whereas, Q16 in the filename are 16 bits-per-pixel component. A Q16 version permits you to read or write 16-bit images without losing precision but requires twice as much resources as the Q8 version. Versions with dll in the filename include ImageMagick libraries as dynamic link libraries. Unless you have a Windows 32-bit OS, we recommend this version of ImageMagick for 64-bit Windows:

Under this scheme all borrowers who paid home loans with a satisfactory repayment track of at least one year are eligible.
