A death in the family is not only emotionally devastating, it can also take a tremendous toll on the future financial security of a family. Suddenly, without the deceased’s income, paying the mortgage or providing for a child’s college education may become much more difficult.

Those who buy life insurance generally do so to help ensure their loved ones are taken care of financially. Life insurance is a promise by an insurance company to pay those who depend on you a sum of money upon your death. In return, you make periodic payments called premiums. Premiums can be based on factors such as age, gender, medical history and the dollar amount of the life insurance you purchase.

In the event of your passing, life insurance provides money directly to the individuals you select, your beneficiaries, who can use the money as they see fit, including:

  • Replacing lost income
  • Covering basic living expenses
  • Paying household debts, estate taxes and funeral expenses
  • Funding a child’s education
  • Supplementing retirement savings

Life insurance comes in two main types – term and permanent – which may both be available through your workplace.

Term life insurance pays a specific lump sum to your loved ones, providing coverage for a specified period of time – usually from one to 20 years. If you stop paying premiums, the insurance stops. Term policies pay benefits if you die during the period covered by the policy, but they do not build cash value. They may also give you the option to port. That is, you can take the coverage with you if you leave your company.

Generally, you should consider a term life insurance policy to:

  • Get valuable coverage at an affordable price
  • Help cover specific financial responsibilities like a mortgage or college expenses
  • Supplement a permanent policy

Permanent life insurance policies do not expire. They are intended to protect your loved ones permanently, as long as you pay your premiums. Some permanent life insurance policies accumulate cash value. That means the value of the policy may grow each year, tax-deferred, until it matches the face value of the policy. The cash can generally be accessed via loans or withdrawals, and can be used for a variety of purposes. This type of policy is typically portable so coverage can continue if employment terminates.

Consider a permanent insurance policy if you want:

  • Protection for life
  • Payments that stay the same each year
  • To put additional money into the policy on a tax-favored basis
  • Cash value you can use while you are living

Getting life insurance through work can be an easy way to protect your family. If your employer offers a group plan, consider signing up for advantages that may include:

  • Competitive group rates
  • Guaranteed issue, meaning you can get a certain amount of coverage without answering health questions or taking a medical exam
  • Convenient payroll deductions
  • Easy access to enrollment and educational tools that can help you make decisions about the type and amount of insurance that’s right for you
  • The confidence of knowing that your employer has reviewed and selected the plan

All you have to do is sign up, and sometimes enrollment is automatic.

Permanent life insurance is protection for your entire life, as long as sufficient premiums are paid. Properly structured and maintained permanent life insurance can build cash value which you can use as you see fit. 4

While you won’t be able to pinpoint the amount you’ll need to the penny, you can make a sound estimate. Your goal should be to develop a life insurance plan that, following your death, will allow your family to live comfortably without your economic contribution. Also consider the effect of inflation over time. The amount needed for retirement or college 20 years from now is likely to be significantly higher than today.

To estimate the amount of life insurance your family would need, first calculate everything you now provide for your family including:

  • Salary
  • Benefits/health insurance
  • 401(k) and retirement savings
  • Personal services you perform for your family, such as child care, cooking, home maintenance, etc.

Then, subtract your personal expenses including:

  • Annual spending on personal needs, such as food, clothing, entertainment, etc.

Life insurance through your workplace may be more affordable than you think. In fact, many people can get term life insurance coverage from a quality company for a surprisingly affordable price. 4

Premiums are typically based on factors such as:

  • Age, sex, height and weight
  • Health status, including whether or not you smoke
  • Participation in high-risk occupations

Life insurance gets more expensive as you get older, and the type of coverage you choose will also affect your premium. Rates for term insurance are typically lower, while rates for permanent policies are typically higher.

2 In general, participants may withdraw cash value equal to premiums paid without tax consequences although less favorable rules may apply in the first 15 years. However, if the funding of the certificate exceeds certain limits, it will become a “modified endowment contract” (MEC) and become subject to “earnings first” taxation on withdrawals and loans. An additional 10% penalty for withdrawals and loans taken before age 59½ will also generally apply. We will notify you if a contribution would cause your certificate to become a MEC. Withdrawals and loans reduce the death benefit and cash value, thereby diminishing the ability of the cash value to serve as a source of funding for cost of insurance charges, which increase as you age. Withdrawals are subject to an administrative fee of 2% of the amount withdrawn, not to exceed $25.

3 Applies to SOLUTIONS Series 121 plan only.

4 Cash values can be accessed through loans and/or withdrawals, but these will reduce the death benefit and may have tax consequences. In addition, withdrawals from some policies may be subject to surrender charges and could have a permanent effect on the cash value and the death benefit.

It’s Time To Expect More From Your Security.

Posted: December 15, 2016

Away from it all, out in the open air… the green pastures… the blue sky above… Who would ever think that you would need security? Just take a look at history and you’ll think again. What plan do you have in place to protect your farm or ranch against everyday crime? Or what about agroterrorism? If Continue reading Protect Your Farm and Ranch with this Security Checklist!

EPG Security Group was formed in 2007.

Why should I hire EPG and not another company?

Truth be told, if you are simply looking for a Officer in a uniform there are many vendors that can provide that service. However, if you are looking for a true partnership that delivers customer service, excellent communication and highly trained officers, then look no further. EPG Security Group has the global network in place to tackle the toughest assignments. Furthermore, when you contract with EPG you are not simply a number. Each client has direct excess to CEO Erik Bergling, something the bigger vendors simply don’t allow.

Aren’t all security services the same?

Unfortunately they are not. Too many companies simply throw a solution together without truly understanding the clients issues. To truly call yourself a Security Provider, you need to approach each and every job in a holistic manner. Taking the time to understand our clients needs is what separates us from the other vendors.

What questions should I be asking a potential security company?

When you are shopping for a security vendor it is vital that you ask the following questions. If they can’t answer or are unwilling to answer any of these questions, I would look somewhere else; A. How Long have you been in business? B. Are you licensed and Insured? C. Do you background all of your personnel? D. Would you recommend a service if you felt it wasn’t required? E. Can I speak with a few of your longest served clients?

Will my guests be scared if I hire a security officer for my wedding?

Prior to your event we will sit down and discuss your overall concerns for the event. In some instances, our clients prefer a more overt approach, meaning our Special Event Agents are branded as Security. However, we do have clients that prefer a more low key approach, meaning our Agents blend in with the crowd. We have even gone as far as wearing the same color as the wedding party. With either approach, our services are always welcomed by the attending guests and the venue itself.

What are some of the top reason to hire a security officer?

There is no blanket answer for this question, however, after sitting down with you and discussing your concerns your individual issues will be determined. With that said, no matter what the reason, a well designed security solution should always deliver the following; Peace of Mind for the client and a customer friendly and approachable environment for guest and employees.

Armed or Unarmed Officers?

This question can not be answered until a thorough examination of your current situation is completed. There are numerous factors that need to be considered when using armed Security Officers. Cost, overall feel of the security program and liability are chief among them.

If you need to send us a quick message please fill out the form and we will get back to you as soon as possible. If you would like a quote or like to submit a resume please check out our contact page.

Dental Implants

Despite improvements in dental care. millions of Americans suffer tooth loss — mostly due to tooth decay, periodontal disease, or injury. For many years, the only treatment options available for people with missing teeth were bridges and dentures. But, today, dental implants are available.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth.

What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

There are many advantages to dental implants, including:

  • Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.
  • Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that teeth might slip.
  • Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.
  • Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain.
  • Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.
  • Improved oral health . Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.
  • Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime.
  • Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep them in place.

How Successful Are Dental Implants?

Success rates of dental implants vary, depending on where in the jaw the implants are placed but, in general, dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%. With proper care (see below), implants can last a lifetime.

Can Anyone Get Dental Implants?

In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for a dental implant. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Heavy smokers, people suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders — such as diabetes or heart disease — or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis. If you are considering implants, talk to your dentist to see if they are right for you.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Dental Implants?

In general, dental implants are not covered by dental insurance at this time. Coverage under your medical plan may be possible, depending on the insurance plan and/or cause of tooth loss. Detailed questions about your individual needs and how they relate to insurance should be discussed with your dentist and insurance provider.

What Is Involved in Getting a Dental Implant?

The first step in the dental implant process is the development of an individualized treatment plan. The plan addresses your specific needs and is prepared by a team of professionals who are specially trained and experienced in oral surgery and restorative dentistry. This team approach provides coordinated care based on the implant option that is best for you.

Next, the tooth root implant, which is a small post made of titanium, is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the implanted metal post, anchoring it securely in the jaw. The healing process can take from six to 12 weeks.

Embed Asset Override

Once the implant has bonded to the jawbone, a small connector post — called an abutment — is attached to the post to securely hold the new tooth. To make the new tooth or teeth, your dentist makes impressions of your teeth, and creates a model of your bite (which captures all of your teeth, their type, and arrangement). The new tooth or teeth is based on this model. A replacement tooth, called a crown, is then attached to the abutment.

Instead of one or more individual crowns, some patients may have attachments placed on the implant that retain and support a removable denture.

Your dentist also will match the color of the new teeth to your natural teeth. Because the implant is secured within the jawbone, the replacement teeth look, feel, and function just like your own natural teeth.

How Painful Are Dental Implants?

Most people who have received dental implants say that there is very little discomfort involved in the procedure. Local anesthesia can be used during the procedure, and most patients report that implants involve less pain than a tooth extraction .

Embed Asset Override

After the dental implant, mild soreness can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications. such as Tylenol or Motrin .

How Do I Care for Dental Implants?

Dental implants require the same care as real teeth, including brushing, flossing, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash, and regular dental check-ups.

What Is A PhD?

Brief definition

In the UK, a PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy , sometimes referred to as a doctorate . It is the highest level of degree that a student can achieve. At some institutions, including Oxford University, a Doctor of Philosophy is known as a DPhil. It is distinct from professional doctorates such as an Engineering Doctorate (EngD).

PhD Entry requirements

An undergraduate degree is a minimum requirement and many will also require a master s degree (such as an MA, MSc or MRes). Some funded PhD s will be on a 1+3 basis, which is one year of a master s plus three years of PhD funding.

How to apply for a PhD

Prospective PhD students are usually expected to submit a research proposal to the department they wish to undertake their study in. Some departments will encourage students to discuss their ideas with an academic working in that field first. The proposal will outline what they intend their research to investigate, how it relates to other research in their field and what methods they intend to use to carry out their research. Some PhD s however, particularly in the sciences, are advertised as studentships where the research aims are more prescriptive.

How long is the course?

A PhD usually lasts three years (four for a New Route PhD see below), or rather, any available funding usually lasts for that time. Students may be able to take extra time in order to complete their thesis but this will usually be at their own expense. For part-time, self-funded students, a PhD can take up to seven years.

What s involved

A PhD usually culminates in a dissertation of around 80,000-100,000 words, based on research carried out over the course of their study. The research must be original and aim to create new knowledge or theories in their specialist area, or build on existing knowledge or theories. Many departments initially accept students on an MPhil basis and then upgrade them to PhD status after the first year or two, subject to satisfactory progress. Students who are not considered to be doing work appropriate for PhD level can instead submit a shorter thesis and gain an MPhil.

There is little taught element in a PhD students are expected to work independently, supported by their department and a supervisor. There may be seminars to attend and/or lab work to complete, depending on the subject. During their study, students will try and get academic papers published and present their work at conferences, which will allow them to get feedback on their ideas for their dissertation.

New Route PhD

Introduced in 2001, the New Route PhD is a four-year programme that combines taught elements, including professional and transferable skills, with the student s research. There are now hundreds of NRPhD students studying a variety of subjects at a consortium of universities across the UK. Check www.newroutephd.ac.uk for further information and a list of participating universities.

Career prospects for PhD Students

PhD graduates who go on to work in academia usually start off by undertaking postdoctoral research and then a fellowship or lectureship. Other career options will depend on what the PhD was in commercial research is an option for some, and many are able to use their specialist knowledge and research skills in areas of business and finance.
