How much does a live-in nanny cost?

If you have two or more children, a live-in nanny will cost you less than your total daycare fees. However, even if you have just one child, you’ll find that a live-in nanny’s fees are exceptionally cost effective when you consider the additional time savings you can benefit from (meal preparation, housekeeping, minding pets or the convenience of childcare at home – no need to pack up and drive your child to and from a daycare each day).

Are there additional costs involved in hiring a live-in caregiver?

Yes. Changes to the Live-in Caregiver Program Effective April 1, 2010, state that all employers wishing to hire foreign live-in caregivers must cover the following costs:

Employers of foreign live-in caregivers are now responsible for paying for their caregiver’s health insurance at no cost to the caregiver until he/she becomes eligible for provincial health coverage. Employers are not permitted to recoup these costs from live-in caregivers.

Employers of foreign live-in caregivers are now required to enrol their caregivers in provincial workplace safety insurance (also known as worker’s compensation) or comparable insurance if the former is not available. This must be done at no cost to the caregiver. Employers are not permitted to recoup these costs from live-in caregivers.

Recruitment and Third Party Fees

Employers who wish to use a recruitment agency or third party agency to hire a foreign live-in caregiver must pay for all the services provided by the agency or third party, and must pay all fees and costs associated with such a recruitment or third party agency. Employers are not permitted to recoup recruitment fees or other costs associated with the use of such an agency or third party from the caregivers.

Employers of foreign live-in caregivers are required to pay the transportation costs for bringing their caregivers to Canada. In the instance where foreign caregivers are already in Canada, employers are responsible for paying to relocate them to the location of work (where caregiving will take place) at no cost to the caregiver.

Is minimum wage a fair rate? Will that include all household duties like light cleaning?

Minimum wages in Canada (in Canadian dollars) are generally higher than standard wages for the same work in our nannies’ respective countries in their respective currencies. You are, of course, free to offer more than minimum wage if you see fit. The exact pay and the specific responsibilities you’d like your nanny hired for will be part of the employment contract that we will help to negotiate.

I’ll likely need a nanny who can work more than 40 hours a week. How will that work?

Nannies will need to be paid for the exact hours they work. If you foresee a set number of hours or have a schedule in mind, this should be included in your offer of employment (we can help you with this). If your nanny works a set amount of hours beyond the standard 40-hour work week (this number differs from province to province – we can provide you with that info, too), your nanny will qualify for overtime pay, which by law is 1.5 times the hourly rate.

Earnings And Employment In Canada: Garbage, Debt Collectors Among Wage Winners

Now might be the right time to get into the garbage collecting business — or the debt collecting business.

Canada’s garbage collectors, debt collectors, call centre operators and temp agency workers are among the people seeing the biggest wage hikes in the country, according to StatsCan’s latest data on payroll employment, earnings and hours .

The agency says people in the broad business sector known as “administrative and support, waste management and remediation services” saw wage hikes of more than eight per cent, on average, in the past year.

That sector includes garbage collection and hazardous waste removal, but also includes numerous other businesses that support other businesses, such as call centres, debt collection agencies, and even janitorial and landscaping services.

Employees in these businesses are seeing much larger wage gains than the Canadian average, where earnings overall rose 2.6 per cent in the past year, StatsCan says.

And the people seeing the worst wage gains? Management, apparently (and perhaps surprisingly), which saw wages drop a steep 3.9 per cent in one year.

A word of warning about this data: Just because wages are going up in an industry doesn’t mean the industry is actually hiring. For instance, manufacturing saw wage hikes of 3.5 per cent, but total hiring was actually down one per cent on the year .

    Non-Exempt Employees Can Choose Leave or Pay for Their Overtime Hours

    Effective August 1. non-exempt employees (i.e. overtime eligible for all hours over 40 worked in a week) can initiate or change their election regarding how their overtime is to be handled by the Payroll Department. All non-exempt employees have the option of being paid for their overtime (which is the default) or to accumulate their overtime as leave.

    If a non-exempt employee has made an election in the past and does not want to change their election, they do not have to do anything. If they want to continue to receive pay for any overtime earned, they also do not have to complete a form. However, if the non-exempt employee would like to change their election from receiving pay to receiving leave or receiving leave to receiving pay, they need to complete an Overtime Leave Agreement Form and submit it to the Payroll Department no later than Friday, September 8.

    Unfortunately this deadline is firm and we cannot accept forms after that date.

    Please remember that an election commits the employee to their choice for one year until the next open enrollment period. This means that if the non-exempt employee elects leave accumulation he or she will receive leave and not pay for any overtime worked during the next academic year.

    Important Changes to Fiscal Year End Biweekly Payroll Processing

    Because of the fiscal year end roll process, it will be necessary to make a change to the biweekly payroll processing schedule. The biweekly payroll, for the pay period June 11 to June 24, pay date June 30, 2017 will be processed one (1) week earlier.

    In order to meet this schedule:

    Timesheets must be submitted by midnight Sunday June 18th .

    Approvals must be completed by 1pm on Monday June 19th .

    This means that you will be submitting/approving timesheets prior to the end of the pay period. Please submit estimated hours for the work days of June 19th through June 24th. If actual hours worked differ, a corrected timesheet must be completed, approved and faxed to payroll (703.993.2601) no later than Friday June 30th.

    This situation only impacts timesheet submission and approval; there is no change in the actual pay date which remains June 30. Because of the limited time for processing, late timesheets will be held and paid on the next biweekly payrun (pay date July 14, 2017)

    IRS Limits for 2017

    The IRS announced cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) affecting the dollar limits for pension plans and other retirement-related items for the 2017 tax year. There is no change from 2016. Participants under age 50 can contribute up to $18,000 in the Supplemental Retirement Plan (403(b)) program and the Virginia Deferred Compensation Plan (DCP) (457). Participants age 50 and over can contribute $24,000 in each plan. If you wish to change your 403(b) contribution, please complete a 403(b) salary reduction agreement and return to Benefits at MS 3C3.
