2018 Skoda Yeti/Karoq spied with unique body panels

Car body panels

Car body panels

The replacement for the Skoda Yeti has been spied again, but this time it s sporting unique body work.

The last set of spy photos we published, way back in the middle of 2016, showed the Yeti replacement looking virtually identical to its Volkswagen Tiguan sibling, except for a new grille and, potentially, new bonnet.

This latest prototype reveals how the two cars will share no exterior body panels, except maybe the roof.

Up front, the next-generation SUV features a completely unique treatment, which is essentially scaled down version of the Kodiaq s face, complete with a split headlight arrangement.

Car body panels

Around the side, we can see the new Skoda crossover has its own set of door and fender panels, with the brand s now characterisitic shoulder line crease positioned between the door handles and window frames. Unlike the Tiguan, the Skoda crossover doesn t feature flag pole-style wing mirrors.

At the rear, the small SUV seems to feature styling that s once again cribbed from the larger Kodiaq. It should be noted the rear side window is actually a black plastic panel and there are false white panels around the tail-lights, so there might be some surprises in store.

Despite featuring a unique body, Skoda s new small crossover will share its mechanical package with the Tiguan, and will likely share its key dimensions with the short-wheelbase Volkswagen.

Car body panels

Motivation should come from a selection of familiar Volkswagen Group turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Buyers will be able to chose between manual and dual-clutch transmissions, as well as front- and all-wheel drive.

It s not known, at this stage, whether the new SUV will continue the Yeti name. Rumours indicate the Yeti badge could be ditched in favour of the new nameplate, Karoq.

A leaked presentation slide laying out the brand s crossover plans includes three new models: a Kodiaq coupe, and cars bearing the Model K and Model Q codenames.

Unlimited Solar Energy from the Ocean?

OTEC is based on the idea of exploiting the differences in temperature between deep waters and surface waters in order to generate electric power. Shallow ocean waters can heat up to a temperature of 29C in the tropics. Only one kilometer below these warm waters, temperatures are significantly lower, often falling below 5C. These extreme temperature differences are used to operate vapor turbines, which drive generators to produce electricity. Experts estimate that on an average day, 60 million square kilometers of tropical seas absorb an amount of solar radiation that is equal in heat content to about 250 billion barrels of oil. To get a better perspective on these numbers, this actually means that less than 0.001% of this energy converted into electric power would be sufficient to supply over 20 times the electricity consumed daily in the United States.

Throughout the years, a number of attempts were made to refine the technology and construct a practical prototype of an OTEC plant. D’Arsonval’s student, Georges Claude. was the first to succeed in building an OTEC plant in Cuba in 1930, which was capable of generating 22 kW of electricity using a low-pressure turbine. This experiment proved the viability of such a system or, in Claude’s words “Made my virulent opponents hold their tongues.” Five years later, Claude constructed another OTEC plant aboard a cargo vessel. Unfortunately, it was destroyed shortly after the vessel departed due to poor weather conditions. The appearance of large amounts of cheap oil in the mid-twentieth century eventually brought OTEC research to a halt.

A team of British architects, including Dominic Michaelis, Alex Michaelis, and Trevor Cooper-Chadwick, are currently working on a project they hope will bring the century-old idea back to life. They have proposed to construct a network of “floating platforms”, which in addition to being OTEC power generators, will be equipped with wind and wave turbines. In this way, the platforms will simultaneously exploit a number of natural energy sources to provide ‘around the clock’ electricity. The scientists say that a single “island” of this design will be able to produce around 250MW, while 50,000 of these islands will be able to meet the daily energy requirements of the entire world s population.

The architects say that an OTEC plant will not only be a supplier of green energy, but due to its unique conversion process, will also provide desalinated water as a byproduct. In addition to about 300,000 liters of fresh water each day, the OTEC plant may also be used to produce hydrogen fuel by using electrolysis. Alex Michaelis envisions the islands themselves as home to workers, who will operate and maintain the plants. Michaelis envisions the inhabitants will be able to grow seafood and vegetables, living and working in rotations on the islands.

Many critics have questioned the viability of the 50,000 artificial islands system, saying it is unlikely that the project can be implemented cost-efficiently. In response to this criticism, Michaelis says that If we consider that we are at war to find a new form of clean energy, wartime effort in World War II produced vast numbers of planes, tanks, ships and other armaments on both warring sides. 20,300 Spitfires alone were built, making the construction of more than 50,000 of these plants seem a reasonable number.

Are Rotating Solar Panels Effective?

Rotating solar panels are getting a lot of media attention lately, and at first glance, they seem to have some benefits. Tracking systems move the panels throughout the day in order to keep them facing the sun. The longer they are aligned with the sun, the more energy they can produce – or at least that is the idea behind them. In reality, however, moving solar panels may not be the most practical choice for many homes and businesses.

Tracking Systems Cost More than Fixed-Tilt Systems

In a direct comparison with fixed-tilt solar installations, rotating systems will virtually always be more expensive. This is due to a few factors. First of all, tracking panels have parts and machinery which are costlier to produce than the stationary variety, particularly for systems that track the sun on more than one axis. The complexity of installing rotating solar panel systems may also result in additional fees. Over the lifetime of the system, operations and maintenance costs of moving panels tend to be higher than upkeep costs for fixed-tilt systems. Land use costs must also be considered, as tracking panels must be spaced out over a larger area in order to function effectively.

Rotating Solar Panels are Prone to Failure

Because they have no moving parts, fixed-tilt solar systems require little care other than an occasional inspection. Rotating panels, on the other hand, need to be regularly maintained in order to keep the machinery in good working order. With tracking systems, the panels are supported on pivoting platforms with wheels powered by a motorized drive to move the platforms along circular channels. Solar energy systems are typically expected to operate for at least 20 years, and that’s a lot of time for issues to crop up with the mechanized parts. With their many moving parts and pieces, tracking installations are much more likely to experience failure than fixed-tilt systems.

Fixed-Tilt Ground Solar Panels Provide Benefits

Photovoltaic or PV systems are often installed on roofs, as this can be effective in keeping the panels in full view of the sun. With some roofs, however, this may not be a viable option, due to the building’s orientation, the roof’s construction or overhanging trees and vegetation. In these cases, ground installation is recommended. Ground solar panel tracking systems aren’t guaranteed to provide a significant improvement in the amount of energy harvested over stationary panels. Rotating panels may be able to increase a system’s energy output, but properly installed fixed-tilt panels can provide the same level of output in most situations.

Rotating PV panel systems may make sense in some cases, but only if the increased amount of energy collected is substantial enough to compensate for the additional installation and maintenance costs and potential mechanical failure. Intermountain Wind and Solar, serving customers in the Salt Lake City area and throughout the Intermountain West, specializes in PV solar panel installation and system design. Solar panel scam: Hunt for the identity thief who cost scores of Australians their dream

To his staff he was Tony Smith. To banks and financial authorities he was Tony Agius.

To investigators he appears to be little more than a puff of smoke left behind by someone who could be living in Asia, possibly Hong Kong or Beijing.

And to a growing list of consumers across the country who believed they were buying solar panels for their homes, he is the man who stole their savings.

The story of a million dollar-scam began in March when the real Tony Agius, of suburban south Brisbane, answered an online job ad seeking solar panel sales people.

Mr Agius provided a scan of his driver’s licence to his supposed new boss – crucially, someone he had never laid eyes on and who he only communicated with via email.

Days later, on March 28, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission registered a change in officeholders at a company called LG Energy Solutions Pty Ltd.

The sole director became Anthony Agius of Underwood in Brisbane.

According to its ASIC company extract, the address of LG Energy Solutions was level 27, 127 Creek Street in Brisbane’s CBD.

Alarm bells should have rung at the corporate regulator. The building only has 23 floors.

By April, LG Energy Solutions’ “Easter Sale” was popular in the booming market for rooftop solar and battery packages, a product heavily subsidised by the federal government’s solar rebate.

Calling himself Tony Smith, the man no one had seen hired sales staff over the internet on commission-only contracts to flog his “product”.

This turned out to be an easy job for any half-experienced seller because LG Energy Solutions was offering top of the range German-engineered LG panels.

For a package that LG, the Korean-owned conglomerate, sells for $25,000, LG Energy Solutions was offering for $15,999.

The company was advertising on Facebook, Gumtree and in Fairfax Media metro newspapers.

Anita Jackson, an experienced solar saleswoman, sold $140,000 worth of orders in her first week.

“It was a really bloody good price,” she told Fairfax Media.

She queried with Smith how it was that LG Energy Solutions could sell the same product so much cheaper but was told that as a “reseller”, the company could set its own price, while LG’s licensed distributors were forced to follow the Korean company’s price.

As April went on and a number of “red flags” were raised around dodgy tracking numbers and installations that had not happened, the truth dawned on Ms Jackson.

“I had to get in touch with my customers and let them know it was a complete scam,” she said.

There had never been any solar panels and Smith’s staff had been selling little more than fresh air.

Making things worse, consumers had rushed to lock in the deal of a lifetime by agreeing to pay the total price upfront.

Fairfax Media has learned of one buyer who lost $35,000.

Helen Vleugel, a retiree from Mt Martha in Victoria, and her husband Peter paid $9999 for panels that will never be installed.

“You’re looking at the LG logo wondering how this can be a fraud,” she said. “It leaves you not wanting to buy anything off the internet ever again.”

Some consumers have taken to solar industry online chat forums to seek answers.

One poster, “Smartywishbone”, said: “We are now so sad. My wife and I bought a system from these people (which was to be installed next week) for our son and daughter in law. We were hoping to help them with cost of living as they have a young family and are struggling with mortgage payment. Our $10,000 is now lost. We researched the company online – seemed all good.”

Iain Luck, who paid $9999 for panels for his home in Warragul, regional Victoria, said: “I’ve been saving forever to get solar panels.”

The Vleugels were alerted on April 21 in a “weird” phone call by their bank, ANZ. Its fraud department had been alerted to the scam but Ms Vleugel was left wondering why her payment, made 48 hours before, could not be frozen.

At Bendigo Bank, the accounts of LG Energy Solutions had been frozen but not before Smith had managed to transfer what could turn out to be up to $1 million offshore.

The money was transferred to a company known as “Four Horsemen Limited”.

In a bizarre twist, Smith appointed Sydney liquidator Steven Kugel, instructing him to wind up the company.

Mr Kugel believes his appointment could have been part of a naive plan to free up the final transfer from Bendigo Bank.

What it did was lift the lid on the scale of wreckage left behind by the identity thief.

There are 60 victims owed more than $700,000 but Mr Kugel suspects there are more, including people too embarrassed to come forward.

According to people who spoke to Fairfax Media, the fraud is being investigated by ASIC, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Queensland Fair Trading and Queensland Police, among others.

An ASIC spokesman said it was “aware of the matter” but no other agency would comment on the record.

DFAT is interested because Smith provided a fake passport to Mr Kugel bearing the same details as the driver’s licence of Brisbane’s Tony Agius.

The real Agius is a citizen of Malta who does not have an Australian passport.

The fake Agius is said to be well-spoken with an Australian accent, which one person said has a “hint of British”.

According to an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court of NSW, at various times Smith has told Mr Kugel that he is in Hong Kong but resides mainly in Beijing.

At one time he even claimed that he had been the victim of identity theft, the court has been told.

In a separate court case that happened before Smith closed LG Energy Solutions, the company was sued by the real LG for its website and promotional material which could mislead consumers into believing they were dealing with the reputable LG.

In a statement, LG solar marketing manager Russ Prendergast said: “As soon as we were alerted to the issue, LG Electronics Australia took immediate and aggressive legal action against the company, including seeking an urgent injunction in the Federal Circuit Court. We were successful in obtaining the injunction to stop the company leveraging the LG brand and believe that this action did help disrupt their activity.”

How much money does it cost to install solar panels

Solar Power

Solar panels can cut your energy bills, and pay you for producing electricity, which makes them an appealing option if your energy costs are going up. But before paying thousands to install solar panels, consider whether your property is suitable, and whether they’ll really cut your bills.

How much money does it cost to install solar panels

How solar panels work

Solar panels harness the sun’s energy through photovoltaic cells. The cells convert sunlight into electricity. You don’t need direct sunlight for the panels to work, as they still generate some power on an overcast day.

  • Cut your carbon footprint – the panels are environmentally friendly, as solar electricity doesn’t release harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants into the atmosphere.
  • Renewable and sustainable – you can’t run out of this type of power.
  • Cut energy costs – sunlight doesn’t cost a penny, once you’ve paid for the panels to be installed.
  • Financial support – solar panels are eligible for Feed-in Tariffs. You earn money for each kWh of electricity you generate, and you get an additional payment for the electricity you export back into the grid.
  • The initial cost – this can be expensive, at thousands of pounds, unless you’re eligible for financial help towards the cost.
  • Dependent on weather – solar panels still produce power on a cloudy day, but the weather may influence how well they work.
  • Your property might not be suitable – you need a roof that’s big enough to fit the panels, and produce enough power. Ideally, your home should also be south-facing. Listed buildings are unlikely to be allowed to install solar panels.
  • Effort – there is a big initial outlay, and building work is required. This will put many people off, when energy is available simply from a range of suppliers.

Call your local Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre on 0800 512 012 for more information on solar panels.

The cost of solar panels

The average 4kWp solar panel system costs around 5,000- 8,000 to install, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

This can generate around 3,800 kWh of electricity a year, and save around two tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. However, costs vary widely between installers – so get several quotes.

Before spending thousands installing a system, make sure it’s worthwhile. Check if other energy saving measures could save more, such as switching suppliers, loft or wall insulation.

Your home must reach band D or higher in the Energy Performance Certificate to be eligible for the highest rate of Feed-in Tariff.

If you’re unable to install solar panels or you decide against it, cut energy costs by comparing tariffs and switching to a cheaper deal. Make sure you’re on the most competitive tariff, particularly given the rising cost of energy.

Fitting solar panels

Tell your buildings insurer: The panels will form part of your home’s structure. This means your insurance could get more expensive, if your insurer decides you need a higher level of cover, particularly if the house needs rebuilding and the panels need replacing.

Consider separate insurance: Your home insurance won’t guard against any mechanical fault in the panels. If they stop working, check if they’re under warranty. You may need to insure them separately.

Check the provider: Look out for the REAL Assurance and Microgeneration Certification Schemes (MCS), ensuring you can trust the company. The MCS mark shows that the installer offers high-quality products, while the REAL Assurance Scheme is a consumer code that offers protection.

How much money does it cost to install solar panels

Can I compare energy prices if I am on a prepayment meter?

If you use a prepayment meter, you can still compare energy prices and potentially switch to another cheaper prepayment deal.

If you are on a prepayment meter, you could switch to a fixed-rate deal and save.

You can compare your current prepayment tariff to alternative tariff options using our energy comparison tool.

Most San Diego home owners who can do simple do-it-yourself projects around the house will find it possible to install their own systems or act as their own solar contractor with Blue Pacific Solar comprehensive technical support. By installing your own solar panels kits you reduce your costs and increase your rate-of-return investment on your system. Solar panel kits for residential and commercial owners serve three main advantages in grid-tied and off-grid systems. The first for homeowners is to reduce their cost. For the residential or commercial property owner there are large savings ahead from the monthly dread of your utility bill. The second advantage of home solar panels kits would be your hedge against inflation. Utility bills across America are on the rise and will only go higher. The third is pride of ownership while helping to conserve energy in America with less dependence on fossil fuels.

San Diego Solar DIY Panels, Take Power Over Your Own Installation and Save Money.

Money into your pocket now. The savings are immediate and last a lifetime. Satisfaction you are no longer a victim of rising energy costs. Pride that your family is part of the sustainability solution. San Diego home solar panels help the environment. Installation designed for the average DIY homeowner. Thinking of your family’s future. Reduce America’s dependence on fossil fuel. Put the power of the sun to work for you. The money you save by taking the solar leap will help the USA grow American jobs.

Many site-specific installation factors need to be considered when planning for your grid-tied or off-grid solar panel kit. Budget, available roof or ground space and other factors will heavily influence your choice of packages. If you are planning to attach your home system to your roof, first decide which solar panel size will be the best fit. Consider obstructions such as chimneys, plumbing stacks and roof vents you have on your home. Grid-tied and off-grid kits consist of solar panels, cables in conduit, racks and AC as well as DC disconnect electric boxes with switches. Types of inverters and grounding rods or methods are also a consideration. Blue Pacific Solar can help you decide which kit is best for your house. Usually the largest system you can afford will be the most cost effective in price per watt having the best return on investment. However, even a small solar panel kit can reduce part of your utility bill putting money back into your household.

The sun over your home or commercial business is a natural source of energy for cheap electricity. Installation panel kits can lower cooling and heating costs by offsetting electric bills. Photovoltaic energy systems are hard at work anywhere the sun shines and no matter where you live you have an abundance of sunlight. Residential and commercial solar kits have no moving parts and require no maintenance lasting for decades.

DIY home installation kits start with DC electricity from sunlight. The output of solar kits varies throughout the day with changes in cloud cover and weather. The characteristics of DC electricity is different from AC current coming off the grid. Systems must utilize the entire solar day which typically is about 6 hours of useful sunlight.

Choosing the right size solar panel kit for your San Diego Home. The first step you take after you have considered available roof or ground space, is to look at your home monthly average electricity usage from your electrical bill. The key number you are interested in finding is your most current 12 month total kWh (Kilowatt Hours). Because of seasonal considerations it is always a good idea to look at average daily usage from the most current 12 months utility bills. Here at Blue Pacific Solar when we are designing a home solar kit we prefer evaluation a 12 month kWh history dividing it by 365 to get the average kWh per day. When you are designing an off-grid system you will be particularly interested in the kWh of the month of December since it has the least number of available sun hours and is usually considered as a base line factor in the design methodology.

The next step in choosing the right size solar panel kit after locating your average daily kWh usage then divide that by the number of available sun hours. For example, look to the sun map we provide. That solar irradiance that we show is compiled from 20 years of weather data and commonly used by solar companies when calculated the size of home or commercial systems. Example 18 kWh / 4.7 average sun hours = 3.8 kW x 1,000 (kW to Watts) = 3,830 watts needed.

Your 3rd step is to calculate the number of solar panels required for the right size home kit you need. Finding out how many solar modules you need is one of the final steps in sizing your home system. Take the watts needed to produce and divide the watt STC rating of the solar panel you selected, then divide that number by the inverter efficiency which is usually about .94. You now have about the total number of modules you need to size your residential or commercial solar panel kit. This method does not consider all the de-rate factors but it will get you close enough you can now look and the different systems.

Just a little more about “San Diego Solar Insolation”. The suns insolation is measured in kilowatt hours per square meter per day in areas throughout the world. A common term used by solar installers everywhere is “sun-hours per day”. To find the average sun-hours per day in San Diego, look at the solar insolation map provided by the team here at Blue Pacific Solar in the LH column of our kit pages.

If you are sizing a solar panel kit for your grid tie home or off grid cabin use the lowest daily irradiance number which is December for your area. If you are looking for a utility grid-tied solar panel package with net metering, the average daily sun hours or solar insolation is what you want to use to start your planning. Either way for the best low cost solar panels for your home DIY installation or off-grid system Blue Pacific Solar can provide you with the expertise and support to help you make the best choice for your budget.

“Just wanted to send you a quick note letting you know how impressed I was with the tech Ron who came today to fix my electrical panel. Professional, courteous and efficient would sum him up! We also had Jaz come out a year or so ago and those words would describe him as well. Keep up the good work! Thank you!”

“I had a chandelier made for my living room. Went to Murano outside Venice and designed one to fit the room. After 7 months, it arrived in 7 huge boxes. Nathaniel with Small Jobs brought in his crew and installed and put on all the crystals (seemed to be hundreds!) in just a few hours. A superb job! He also installed a huge brass and wrought iron on in the foyer, plus 3 other small ones. Nathaniel and his crew were professional and conscientious of the furnishings in the house. 5 STARS!”

“I’ve been doing business with Small Jobs Electric for about 5 years. They have handled a myriad of projects in my home ranging from installing ceiling fans and complicated switches to relocating outlets and rewiring to accommodate my needs. They installed additional support beams in my attic to support a custom pot rack installation in my kitchen and most recently ran diagnostics to identify a faulty GGCI and replacement of same. I cannot recommend them more highly. Nathaniel is the man! An honest, hardworking and extremely knowledgeable business man who handles everything in the most professional and efficient manner.”

“Nathaniel is my HERO. Small Jobs Electric was recommended by a co-worker and I am glad they were. Part of my home had an electrical issue for about a year. I called Mr. Sparky (actual name of a company) and after 2 hours of searching for the problem, they came to a conclusion. To charge me $140.00 and told me what the problem was. Then to fix the problem, it would be another $400.00+. I would rather live in the dark than give those thieves another penny. Nathaniel came to my rescue and diagnosed and fixed the problem with in 15 minutes! The bill was exactly what he quoted me. I would recommend Small jobs Electric to my friends and will definately use them in the future. THANK YOU. “

“I have hired these guys three times, and have been nothing but pleased. The first two jobs were very minimal and led to the third job which they handled very well. I thought one of the lights they installed was uneven and the owner came out within 24 hours to correct. In the end the light wasn’t uneven, but the mirror I hung was. I will hire them again. “
