Warranty Like the rest of it, the new car s warranty is untouched. You can buy warranties for used cars or go the certified preowned route, but the best warranty you can get without paying extra will be the one that comes with a new car from the manufacturer.

Latest Gizmos The newer the car, the more modern the geeky tech that s packed inside. Multimedia and navigation interfaces are constantly evolving and improving, so if you have to have the latest in gadgets (and don t want to add them yourself post-factory) the selection will be better in the new-car showroom.

Safety As vehicle safety laws become ever more stringent, automakers are forced to change the way vehicles are built and the safety systems with which they are equipped. Some form of tire pressure monitoring is now mandatory on all vehicles sold in the U.S. and by 2012, stability control will be, too. Super Cheap Car Rental has announced the winner of its Not So New Car Rental Giveaway Contest. Sarah Jane Cass received the 2006 Toyota Corolla.

To participate, contestants submitted a selfie to Facebook with a short caption that explains why they love Super Cheap. The photo with the most likes on Facebook would win the 2006 Toyota Corolla, according to the company. Cass posted her selfie and received the most likes.

Cass said that she rents from Super Cheap Car Rental when visiting Los Angeles.

“I had nightmares in the past with big car rental companies,” said Cass. I had really lovely email conversations about pricing and what it would include before I booked. I just didn’t have any surprises and having zero excess charges I think it’s a really great plus, as well.”

The 5 Most Expensive Cars of All Time

Like rare works of art, classic cars can be a great long-term investment — if you have more money than you know what to do with.

Even the least materialistic among us can appreciate the aesthetics of a well-built car. We certainly spend a lot of time with our cars — the average commuter spends about 38 hours a year just sitting in traffic, and the average daily commute to and from work is a bit less than an hour. But most of us don’t get into exquisitely tuned high-performance supercars to head to the office, which makes the sight of these machines a source of excitement, envy, and wonder.

The typical supercar costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to own and maintain, putting it well beyond reach for most people. But some cars leave the brand-new Lambos, Ferrarris, Bentleys, and Bugattis you might see in the dust — not in terms of raw power, but in costs. The five one-of-a-kind cars I’ll look at here, as ranked by Bloomberg and other sources, set sale records that may not be matched for a long time. The classic-car market has made them its best works of art, but you might think otherwise, so read on to find out what makes them the pinnacle of performance and the peak of prestige.

4th: 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider  — $27.5 million

This car turned heads last August, when it was sold to former Tommy Hilfiger honcho Lawrence Stroll for about $10 million more than expected. There were only 10 ever built, and the model’s pedigree includes an appearance in the 1968 version of The Thomas Crown Affair and ownership by Steve McQueen (one of the film’s headliners), who crashed his car and later tried to buy the model that went up for auction without success. The car sold had only one owner, who would have paid roughly $15,000 for it when new. That turned out to be a pretty good investment for him, as the car appreciated in value by 17.7% a year over the 46 years of his ownership.

2nd: 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa — $40.4 million

This private sale (the car pictured is not the same car, but it is the same model) was nearly twice the old record price for a 250 Testa Rossa, and also became the most expensive car ever sold in Britain, when it was reported by London’s Daily Mail a month ago. The model sold (chassis 0704) was originally a prototype designed by Sergio Scaglietti and went on to win 18 endurance races around the world before becoming part of the Henry Ford Museum’s collection in 1967. Ferrari historian Marcel Massini calls it “one of the top five Ferraris on the planet,” and its price certainly earns it that ranking. This car has never been restored, which is now popular among classic-car collectors as a way to proudly display the vehicle’s true history every time it’s taken out of the garage.

1st: 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO  — $52 million

This particular Ferrari (or at least its model, as the preceding photo does not show the car sold) has been a controversial subject in Ferrari-aficionado circles. It’s been called the “Greatest Ferrari of All Time” by Motor Trend Classic and was nominated as the top sports car of all time by Sports Car International. It is essentially the Mona Lisa of classic cars and has been setting records at auction for almost three decades — a 250 GTO seized from a drug lord in 1984 sold at auction in 1987 for $1.6 million, and prices have generally been going straight up ever since.

This sale, which took place last October, remains the high-water mark for classic car sales in spite of fervent competition. There were only 36 of these 300-horsepower V-12-engined cars produced, and this particular sale (chassis number 5111GT) won the 1963 Tour de France and won its class at the 1963 Coupes du Salon, continuing to race GT events at a high level until a sale in 1965. Like the second-most-valuable car on the list, this Ferrari was also a private sale confirmed by third parties.

However, the rapid rise in sale prices is also stoking fears of a bubble. Ferrari dealer Joe Macari told Bloomberg:

It’s a cult car. If you’re a billionaire, you feel you have to have one. I don’t understand the appeal of them. They’re not very beautiful and they never won Le Mans. I’d rather have a Testa Rossa.

Historic Auto Group founder Dietrich Hatlapa also pointed out:

Price rises of 55% [the last major 250 GTO sale took place last year at a price 49% below this sale] aren’t sustainable in any market. We’re not saying the market is going to collapse. It will probably average out over time.

Rare classic Ferraris have increased in value by roughly 15% a year for decades, so the buyer of this car is likely to turn a profit — eventually.

If you are buying a used car, the Federal Trade Commission’s used car rule may help you. The rule requires all used car dealers to place a large sticker – Buyers Guide, in a conspicuous place in each used vehicle they offer for sale. The Buyers Guide will state:

  • whether the vehicle comes with a warranty and, if so, what specific warranty protection the dealer will provide;
  • whether the vehicle comes with no warranty ( as is );
  • that you should ask to have the car inspected by your own mechanic before you buy;
  • that you should get all promises in writing; and
  • what some of the major problems are that may occur in any car.

Whenever you purchase a used car from a dealer, you should receive the original or an identical copy of the Buyers Guide that appeared in the vehicle you bought. The Guide must reflect any changes in warranty coverage that you may have negotiated with the dealer. It also becomes a part of your sales contract and overrides any contrary provisions that my be in that contract.

Dealers are required to post the Buyers Guide on all used vehicles, including used automobiles, light-duty vans, and light-duty trucks. A used vehicle is one that has been driven more than the distance necessary to deliver a new car to the dealership or to test drive it. Therefore, demonstrator cars are covered by the rule. Motorcycles are excluded.

Warranty information in the buyers guide

A major portion of the Buyers Guide gives you new and important information you can use when you select a used car. In the past, lack of information and misunderstanding about warranties frequently were a source of consumer problems. The following sections explain the warranty portion of the Buyers Guide:

As is

If a car is sold as is, this means that if you have problems with the car after you buy it, you must pay for any needed repairs yourself. The dealer has no further responsibility for the car once the sale is complete and you drive off the lot.

If the dealer offers a vehicle for sale as is, without any warranties, the box provided next to the As Is disclosure will be checked.


If a dealer offers a warranty on a used vehicle, he or she must fill in the warranty portion of the Buyers Guide. Examine the warranty carefully before you buy to see what is covered and what is not. The warranty that the dealer offers may give you some idea of what the dealer thinks about the condition of the vehicle.

If the dealer makes any promises to repair the vehicle that are not listed on the Buyers Guide, ask that those promises be added to the contract. The sales contract also must include other specific information about your warranty.

Look for the following information on the Buyers Guide:

See if the warranty offered is full or limited. A full warranty provides the following terms and conditions:

  1. Warranty service will be provided to anyone who owns the vehicle during the warranty period when a problem is reported.
  2. Warranty service will be provided free of charge, including such costs as returning the vehicle or removing and reinstalling a system covered by the warranty, when necessary.
  3. At your choice, the dealer will provide either a replacement or a full refund if the dealer is unable, after a reasonable number of tries, to repair the vehicle or a system covered by the warranty.
  4. Warranty service is provided without requiring that you return a warranty registration card.

If any one of the above statements is not true, then the warranty is limited. A full or limited warranty need not cover the entire vehicle. The dealer may specify only certain systems for coverage under a warranty. By giving a limited warranty, the dealer is telling you that there are some costs or responsibilities that the dealer will not assume for systems covered by the warranty.

  • Check the percentage of the repair cost that the dealer will pay. For example, the dealer will pay 100% of the labor and 100% of the parts.
  • Check which specific systems are covered. The exact systems covered (such as frame and body, brake system, etc.) must be listed. A list of descriptive names of the major systems of an automobile is printed on the back of the Buyers Guide.
  • Check the duration of the warranty for each covered system. For example, 30 days or 1000 miles, whichever occurs first.
  • Unexpired manufacturers’ warranties

    If the used vehicle is still covered under the terms of the manufacturer’s original warranty, the dealer may add the following paragraph in the space below the warranty disclosure.

    MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY STILL APPLIES. The manufacturer’s original warranty has not expired on the vehicle. Consult the manufacturer’s warranty booklet for details as to warranty coverage, service location, etc.

    This does not necessarily mean that dealers also offer their own warranty in addition to the manufacturer’s. If you have any questions about warranty coverage, ask the dealer to let you examine any unexpired warranty on the vehicle.

    Other parts of the buyers guide

    There are other important sections of the Buyers Guide. These sections are explained below.

    Spoken promises

    A statement appears on the Buyers Guide that warns consumers not to rely on spoken promises. Oral promises are difficult, if not impossible, to enforce. Have the dealership put any promises in writing, or do not count on the promise.

    This statement also reminds you to keep the Buyers Guide after purchasing the vehicle. The Buyers Guide will serve as proof of written promises.

    Service contracts

    When you buy a car, you may be offered a service contract. Although often called extended warranties, service contracts are not warranties. Warranties are included in the price of the product. Service contracts come separately from the vehicle, at an extra cost. To decide whether you need a service contract, you should consider several factors: whether the warranty already covers the repairs that you would get under the service contract; whether the vehicle is likely to need repairs and their potential costs; how long the service contract is in effect; and the reputation of the dealer offering the service contract.

    Pre-purchase independent inspection

    The Buyers Guide also includes a suggestion that you ask the dealer whether you may have the vehicle inspected by your own mechanic either on or off the premises. An independent inspection lets you find out about the mechanical condition of the vehicle before you buy it.

    Some dealers will permit you to take the car to an independent mechanic. Others may have good reasons for denying this request.

    With the dealer’s permission, you can bring an independent mechanic to the used car lot. If you do not already have a mechanic you rely on, ask someone who knows about cars for the names of competent, reputable mechanics. You also can find mechanics through advertisements, car repair establishments, automobile associations, and auto diagnostic centers in your community.

    Vehicle systems

    The Buyers Guide includes a list of the 14 major systems of an automobile and some of the major problems that may occur in these systems. You may find this list helpful to evaluate the mechanical condition of the vehicle. The list also may be useful when comparing warranties offered on different cars or by different dealers.

    Dealer identification and consumer complaint information

    On the back of the Buyers Guide, you will find the name and address of the dealership. In the space below that, you will find the name and telephone number of the person at the dealership who should be contacted if any complaints arise after the sale.

    Private sales

    If you buy a used car from a private individual, the sale is not covered by the rule. Private sellers do not have to use the Buyers Guide. In most private sales, the car is sold as is. Without a written contract with specific repair provisions, the private seller has no further responsibility for the car. Of course, if you have a written contract, the seller must live up to the promises stated in the contract. Depending on its age, the car may be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty or service contract. Ask the seller to let you examine any unexpired warranty or service contract on the vehicle.

    Even without the Buyers Guide, when you buy a used vehicle from a private party, you can follow the suggestion outlined above. For example, refer to the list of potential problems displayed on the Buyers Guide. In addition, ask the seller whether you may have the vehicle inspected by your own mechanic.

    Kentucky previous consumer owner information

    Under Kentucky law, an automobile dealer is required to place a sticker on the windshield of every used car notifying you of certain rights. Under the law, you have the right to get the name and address of the previous consumer owner from the dealer if that information is reasonably available.     Despite May’s 2.1% month-over-month dip in the average price of used cars and light trucks — the largest in seven months — the National Automobile Dealers Association says the used-car market is stable. According to the June edition of the NADA Used Car Guide, the average trade-in price for used cars and light trucks up to 8 years old slipped only $57 to $15,263 in May compared with the same period a year ago.

    “A growing supply of 3-year-old vehicles is applying downward pressure on the prices of late-model vehicles,” Jonathan Banks, executive automotive analyst for the NADA Used Car Guide, said in a statement. That increase is, in part, due to increased fleet and lease sales after 2009, when new-vehicle sales hit a 30-year low with fewer trade-ins occurring, he said.

    Some markets have felt the squeeze of the higher supply more than others, Banks said. NADA estimates the late-model supply of midsize cars, as well as compact and luxury utility vehicles, has increased by an average of 16%, while the late-model supply for the overall market has increased by only half that amount. Trade-ins on midsize cars during the first five months of 2013 depreciated by 2.8% to $12,749, while overall market prices during the same period dipped by less than 2%, and prices for full-size pickup trucks increased 1%. Meanwhile, average prices of used luxury cars and utility vehicles have fallen 3.3% this year.

    Banks insists there is little evidence of substantial declines in the overall used-car market. “With gasoline prices holding steady and consumer sentiment at its highest level since 2007, we’re expecting an above-average performance in June,” he said.

    Following WWII Japan’s auto industry continued basing its cars on designs originating with Europe and America, but eventually, in the 1960s, their automotive industry forged its own path. As the economy of Japan grew so did the consumer demand for cars and the Japanese auto industry turned from following to leading the world in design and in manufacturing innovation.

    In addition to meeting domestic demand, Japan invaded the foreign car markets and by the mid-1970s was exporting over 1.8 million cars per year. Perhaps the car that became most widely associated with Japanese cars was the Toyota Corolla which debuted in 1996 and two years later became the ‘2 selling import by 1968. For over forty years the Corolla has graced American driveways and became the hand-me-down car for a whole generation.

    Initially Japanese cars were thought of as utilitarian, but early on efforts were underway to break out of that mold, starting with the 1967 2000GT featured in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice. In production until 1970 the 2000GT wasn’t just sporty looking, it broke both speed and endurance records as well.     (b) imported by a settler on the settler’s first arrival but not entitled to be classified under tariff item No. 9807.00.00;

    (c) forfeited or confiscated for any offence under the Customs laws, or the laws of any province of Canada;

    (d) left by bequest;

    (e) imported from the United States;

    (f) entitled to the benefit of the United States Tariff, the Mexico Tariff or the Mexico-United States Tariff and imported from Mexico

    (i) in the 2009 or 2010 calendar year, if the motor vehicles are not less than ten years old,

    (ii) in the 2011 or 2012 calendar year, if the motor vehicles are not less than eight years old,

    (iii) in the 2013 or 2014 calendar year, if the motor vehicles are not less than six years old,

    (iv) in the 2015 or 2016 calendar year, if the motor vehicles are not less than four years old,

    (a) has machinery or apparatus permanently mounted thereon and is imported for

    (i) use in exploratory or discovery work in connection with oil or natural gas wells or for the development, maintenance, testing, depletion or production of a well up to and including the wellhead assembly, or

    (ii) drilling for water;

    when a similarly-equipped vehicle is not readily available in Canada;

    (b) is received by a resident of Canada as a gift from a relative or friend who resides outside of Canada and the vehicle is to be used for personal purposes and not for any commercial purpose;

    (c) is imported by a non-resident for permanent use by the non-resident at a summer or vacation residence occupied by the non-resident in Canada;

    (d) is imported by a citizen of another country who is not a resident of Canada and who is employed in a defence establishment of the government of that country in Canada or who is on official military service in Canada;

    (e) is imported in accordance with the Non-residents’ Temporary Importation of Baggage and Conveyances Regulations ;

    (f) is imported by a contractor engaged in the construction and maintenance of a leased base established in the Province of Newfoundland by the Government of the United States for use by the contractor in the construction and maintenance of those bases;

    (g) is a diesel-powered self-propelled dump truck that is mounted on rubber-tired wheels or on rubber-tired wheels and half-tracks and has a rated capacity, by struck volume, of not less than 7.2 cubic metres and, by payload weight, of not less than 15 tonnes and was imported for off-highway use to carry minerals or other excavated materials at a mine, quarry, gravel or sand pit or at a construction site;

    (h) is imported by a former resident of Canada returning to resume residence in Canada who

    (i) immediately before returning to Canada, had been a resident of another country for at least 12 consecutive months,

    (ii) has been continuously absent from Canada for at least six months and, during the period of continuous absence, owned the motor vehicle for at least six months, or

    (iii) had emigrated from Canada or had been assigned to extended duty in another country and has been compelled to return to Canada on account of illness, unemployment, educational needs or on account of other personal reasons of a similar nature;

    (i) is imported by a resident of Canada returning to Canada who

    (i) immediately before returning to Canada, had been continuously absent from Canada for at least 12 consecutive months,

    (ii) has been continuously absent from Canada for at least six months and, during the period of continuous absence, owned the motor vehicle for at least six months, or

    (iii) had been assigned to extended duty in another country and has been compelled to return to Canada on account of illness, unemployment, educational needs or on account of other personal reasons of a similar nature;

    (j) is not less than 15 years old;

    (k) is manufactured before January 1st of the model year of the vehicle but imported after that date and before December 31st of that year;

    (l) imported as a formula or sports racing car and may not be licensed for use on a public highway;

    (m) is imported by a resident of Canada who acquired the vehicle outside of Canada as a replacement for another motor vehicle owned by the resident that was damaged, in an accident that occurred outside of Canada, to such an extent that repair was impracticable;

    (n) is a vehicle in respect of which the Foreign Aircraft Servicing Equipment Remission Order, 1992 applies upon its importation;

    (o) is imported temporarily and in respect of which a temporary entry remission order, or any other that permits temporary entry for commercial purposes, applies upon its importation;

    (p) is forfeited pursuant to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act ;

    (q) is imported temporarily under tariff item No. 9802.00.00 or 9803.00.00;

    (r) is goods in respect of which sections 4 and 7 of the Akwesasne Residents Remission Order apply upon its importation; or

    (s) is imported by its original purchaser and

    (i) the vehicle is imported for the personal use of the original purchaser or the original purchaser’s household,

    (ii) the vehicle is not imported for use in a business, in a manufacturing establishment or as equipment to be used by a contractor, and

    (iii) the bill of sale for the vehicle does not specify that the vehicle has been used as a demonstration vehicle or by a car rental agency.


    2. All motor vehicles referred to in section 1 are excluded from the application of tariff item No. 9897.00.00.

    A common question we at Georgia Square Collision hear from our customers whose vehicles have been totaled is “How much will the insurance company pay me for my car?” Insurance companies have a mechanism for determining the fair market value of a totaled car, but this mechanism is not usually visible to the vehicle owner, so we are going to make it more visible to you.

    The insurance company contracts with a third party vendor who uses computer software that collects actual transaction data from automobile sellers by year, make, model, mileage, and condition. This information is specific to geographic area, as well. One of the primary providers of this data is CCC Information Services. If you are interested, the valuation product they provide to insurance companies is described here .

    Once the value of the car is determined, the insurance company will make you an offer for your totaled car based on their data. This leads to two pretty important questions: is the offer fair, and can I negotiate with the insurance company? The offer’s fairness may be determined by comparing it to vehicle valuations that are available to consumers from recognized sources, like Kelly Blue Book or NADA. In my conversations with insurance agents and collision repair professionals, I have found that they feel the insurance company offer should be reasonably close to one or both of these two values:

    Remember, most used cars are closer to average condition than excellent, so expecting the insurance company to pay top dollar for your car is only realistic if the vehicle was truly and verifiably exceptional.

    As for how to negotiate the totaled car value, your chances of success will be based on your ability to support your claim for more money. Simply saying “I think my car is worth more than that” or “I owe more than that on my car, so I need you to pay me more” is unlikely to get you any more money. Here are some ways you may be able to get the insurance company to pay more for your vehicle:

    Provide copies of a complete maintenance history showing that the car has been maintained to a higher than normal standard

    Provide receipts for any accessories, upgrades or custom items you have had installed

    Provide receipts for any recent significant repair or maintenance items (a new set of tires, recently replaced brakes, a new convertible top, etc.)

    Provide documentation that your car was in exceptional cosmetic condition (car show awards, verifiable photographs or similar documents)

    If you live in a rural area near a metropolitan center (Athens, GA, for example), the insurance company may use a lower, rural market valuation. Since there is a good chance you will be looking for a replacement vehicle in the neighboring metro market, where prices may be higher, you should discuss this with your insurance company.     While all automobile accidents are stressful events, an accident involving a totaled car is probably even more stressful. In addition to the inconvenience of the loss of use of your car, you will be faced with having to replace it on short notice, without having done all of the research you might have normally have undertaken prior to making such a large purchase.     General Comments:

    I d had a car a little over a month when I drove through about 9” of water for about 20m in a flood when it all went dead permanently. Apparently those lovely engineers at Peugeot decided to put the air intake just above just a few inches higher than the engine sump. Long story short, the cat sucked water in to the engine, and the H2O compression wrecked the engine. Peugeot said 6k and we will fit a new engine. The car cost 4.7k to buy; insurance gave me 4k.

    Great car mechanically


    Mechanically this car has been great. The only problem I have had on the last two MOTs is the exhaust for some reason blows from the manifold, and it has needed to go in the garage to have this fixed, due not being able to get at it myself.

    I have replaced the back and middle box with no problems.

    The only problems have been with the electrics, which are the speedo either failing to work or sticking just above 40.

    They only thing I do recommend is don t use Peugeot dealers for servicing, as I found out with a 106. I had more problems after they had worked on it than before, and this was on every occasion, not just a one off.     But Channel 2 Consumer adviser Clark Howard has discovered a new website that can make that homework a whole lot easier.

    But dealer Steve Rayman said don’t count on Cargurus to tell consumers everything.

    Rayman said, “If it has been in an accident, or if it’s not up to all the standards that some of the franchise dealers have, then it might not be as good a buy as it says it is.”

    Clark said no matter where you buy a used car, there is no substitute for having your own mechanic check it out first.

    When you’re transferring goods to a buyer, a bill of sale form is the easiest way to make it legal. But just because a bill of sale is a fairly straightforward legal document doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know a few things before you start.

    When you shouldn’t use a Bill of Sale

    For real estate: If you’re planning on transferring real estate property, you can’t use a bill of sale form. Real estate transactions are simply much more complicated and require different forms, such as a quit claim deed, or forms available only from your state or local government. Consult with a real estate attorney or real estate agent if you’re looking to transfer this kind of property.

    For services: A bill of sale should be used when transferring goods, not when performing services. If services are involved (such as woodworking, babysitting, business consulting, etc.), it’s a better idea to use a general contract for services.

    For small sales: This is a matter of personal preference, but most people do not feel it necessary to use a bill of sale when transferring cheaper property. If you’re selling a used guitar, a bill of sale makes a lot of sense. If you’re selling a couple old fishing lures, it might be more trouble than it’s worth.

    Specific types of Bills of Sale

    For certain items or classes of property, you’ll need to use a specific bill of sale. That’s because those bills of sale will contain information required to make the sale legal. Here are a few of those types of bills of sale, all of which we provide.

    Car bill of sale Used car sales between two parties are incredibly common, but you can’t use any bill of sale to transfer the ownership of a car. That’s because a car bill of sale has specific information you need to provide to actually purchase (or sell) an automobile. For example, to legally sell a car, you’ll need to let the buyer know the VIN number, the make and model of the car, the odometer reader, and whether or not that car is under any sort of warranty. Failure to provide that information can actually void the sale of the car.

    A motorcycle bill of sale will contain nearly all that information as well. Omitting any of those details can likewise void the sale.

    Boat bill of sale Like a car bill of sale, a boat bill of sale contains information about the make, model, year, price, and valid warranty of the watercraft in question. But unlike a car, a boat has what’s called a HIN (this stands for hull identification number.) Like a VIN, it’s unique to each boat and is used by government agencies in keeping track of the ownership chain.

    Benefits of a Bill of Sale Form

    A bill of sale helps the transfer of property go smoothly for both buyers and sellers.

    Taxes: as a seller, you may need to report the sale amount as part of your tax documents or for business accounting purposes.

    As-Is: indicating on a bill of sale that you have sold property “as is” protects you as a seller if the buyer encounters problems with the item after purchase. For example, if a person buys an automobile from you and it breaks down after he or she drives away, you are not responsible for the repairs or damages.

    Transfer of Ownership: a bill of sale also documents when the item was transferred to a new owner, which can be critical in certain cases. For example, if someone buys a gun from you and the gun is then used to commit a crime, a signed bill of sale form may be used as supportive evidence that you were not the owner of the firearm at the time of the crime.

    Proof of Ownership: as a buyer, a bill of sale provides proof of ownership, allowing others to verify your rights to property. Whether registering a motorcycle at the DMV or totaling the value of your assets for a bank loan, the document serves as required proof of ownership.

    Date of Ownership: other benefits include documentation of the date that you became owner of an item, preventing disputes about when the property was transferred. The value of the property as agreed on by buyers and sellers is also included on a bill of sale form, limiting conflict over how much was paid or received and/or when payment(s) were made.

    Understanding the intricacies of car finance

    Car trade in the UK is booming, with numerous types of finance deals HP, PCP and personal contract hire tempting Brits to upgrade their motor

    Around three quarters of the cars sold privately in the UK in 2013 were bought through finance deals rather than cash, a huge rise from 2007, when little more than half of buyers took out finance.

    Paul Harrison, head of motor finance at the Finance Leasing Association (FLA), reckons this is down to a post-recession desire to to keep a close eye on outgoings: “Car finance deals are generally written at a fixed interest rate, which means people know exactly what their monthly repayment costs are.”

    The fact that those repayments often appear surprisingly low also plays its part. After all, a new car for less than £100 a month makes motoring little more than a utility bill.

    What are the different types of finance?

    With hire purchase (HP) you pay a deposit plus monthly instalments for an agreed period. At the end of this there s usually a small final payment, then you own the car outright.

    By contrast, personal contract hire is where you hire the car for an agreed period before handing it back at the end of the deal.

    A personal contract purchase (PCP) also features monthly payments, but at the end of the deal you have three choices. You can simply return the car and move on; return the car and, if it’s worth more than it was predicted to be, put the difference towards a new PCP; or pay a pre-arranged fee to own the car outright.

    Is it best to take out manufacturer finance or arrange my own?

    Mr Harrison says: “That decision will depend on the car the customer is interested in buying and the finance providers that their local dealership works with. It’s different in every case.”

    If you’re using finance as a means of running a new car for a fixed monthly price, don’t be seduced by a low headline figure.

    Every deal is different, so it’s important to compare the total cost of each option over the length of the contract.

    How can buying through finance be cheaper than paying with cash?

    When you buy a car on finance, the natural expectation is that it will cost more than buying outright because you ll be paying interest on the money borrowed. However, while this is often the case, carmakers sometimes offer 0 per cent APR deals, which means there is no interest.

    When there is also no deposit, and the car is discounted by enough to cover the admin charges, buying through finance is actually cheaper than using cash.

    Common finance acronyms

    APR: The annual percentage rate is the real cost of borrowing money because it includes interest and charges. The lower the APR, the better the finance deal.

    GAP: guaranteed asset protection insurance covers you in the event the car is written off and your regular car insurance policy doesn t pay off the outstanding finance.

    GFV: the guaranteed future value is calculated at the start of a finance deal and is the amount the car is expected to be worth at the end of a personal contract purchase (PCP) deal.

    PPI: payment protection insurance is designed to insure your finance deal is paid off, even if you die, become ill or lose your job. It has been sold – and mis-sold – for years.

    RV: the residual value, or how much a car is worth after a set period. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the car s price when it was new.

    WLC: the whole life cost includes everything a car will cost you to run over a set period.

    Anything else to consider?

    When you take out a finance deal, the lender is hedging against the car’s future value, so models that hold their value well can cost you less each month than those with a lower list price that lose money quicker.

    Finance deals also have agreed mileage limits, with penalties for exceeding them because a car with higher mileage will be worth less.

    And because future value is key, so is the car’s condition. Smoking in it or letting the trim get tatty will lower its resale price and could be deducted from the car’s value at the end of the contract.

    Finally, think carefully about the length of the agreement. Spreading the costs over a long period might sound appealing, but it could be expensive to get out of the deal if you suddenly fancy a change.

    In some diminished value claims, part of your argument may be that inferior parts were used to repair your vehicle, and if your car had not been in the accident in the first place, it would still have all factory parts installed, and it would not have lost value.

    There are three easy steps to determining dealer cost on a new car or truck. Although these steps are relatively cut-and-dry, you can’t arrive at an authentic number without having a basic understanding of each step and everything that it entails. In the following tutorial, we will show you how to calculate dealer cost while taking various circumstances into account. When you’re through reading the tutorial, you will have a firm grasp on concepts like factory invoicing, dealer hold back and how rebates affect the end result of your calculations. In learning all of these things, you will become a much savvier car shopper.

    Step One: Obtain The Dealer Or Factory Invoice Price

    Depending on the make and model of the vehicle that you’re researching, you should be able to use a number of different sites to find its current dealer invoice price. Websites like, and Yahoo! Autos all offer these prices. However, it is important to make sure that the site you use to get your dealer invoice price takes all of the following points into consideration:

    Base Invoice – This would be the price of the car without any options at all.

    Options Invoice – The invoice that the manufacturer receives for any number of different possible options.

    Destination Fees – Costs are incurred when transporting a new car from the manufacturer to the dealer; those charges will be listed as “destination fees.”

    Manufacturer Fees – These fees refer to the miscellaneous things the manufacturer is going to charge the dealer, and often include advertising and marketing costs along with regional ad fees.

    If the dealer or factory invoice price that you’re given doesn’t take all of the preceding information into account, then you’re not going to arrive at the true dealer cost; move on to a different site that does take these things into consideration.

    Step Two: Calculate The Hold Back Or Hidden Profit

    The complicated series of payments that most manufacturers make to most dealers in order to give them the incentive to stock certain vehicles is known as dealer hold back. Without it, dealers would be much more reticent to give buyers as many deals as they do; after all, the dealer has to make something on the deal, too. Negotiating around the hold back is theoretically possible but not very easy to do. Still, being aware of the hold back amount can help you be a more strategic automobile shopper.

    Usually, the hold back is based on either a percentage of a vehicle’s MSRP or invoice price. It is rolled into the price that the dealer pays for a new vehicle and is typically about two or three percent. However, it is paid back to the dealer at a later time. In other words, dealer cost is inflated because of hold back; knowing what the hold back amount is for any given make and model can help you arrive at actual dealer cost more efficiently.

    Step Three: Calculate Dealer Cost

    In order to get a basic idea about the dealer cost for any given model, simply subtract the hold back from the invoice price. Still, there’s another thing that you need to keep in mind: rebates. These fall into two categories, manufacturer-to-customer programs and manufacturer-to-dealer programs, and must be subtracted from the difference between the invoice price and any hold backs in order to arrive at actual dealer cost.

    Manufacturer-To-Customer Programs include things like special leases, cash rebates and low interest financing. These deals can cut into the profit that a dealer makes – and also reduce the dealer’s overall cost.

    Manufacturer-To-Dealer Programs revolve around marketing support money, or funds that are used to help advertise and promote dealer inventory. They are often referred to as dealer cash incentives, and may or may not be passed along to the customer. In either case, they need to be subtracted from the dealer’s cost.

    Upon subtracting any rebates or incentives, you should have arrived at the most accurate calculation of dealer cost possible. Armed with this information, you can get a better idea of whether you’re receiving a good deal or not on that shiny new car.

    Do’s and don’ts of getting rid of your old car

    I have only ever owned two cars, and a thief relieved me of the last one. So when it came to saying goodbye to my defunct 13-year-old Alfa estate, lying abandoned with a dead battery outside my house since November, I realised I had no idea how to actually get rid of a vehicle. Could I sell it? Scrap it? Give it away?

    Every year in Britain between six and seven million used cars are sold, and two million are scrapped. The EU has introduced strict environmental rules on how cars should be disposed of through its End of Life Vehicle Directive, while new rules designed to combat copper and other metal theft have had the curious impact of making it illegal for car owners to be paid cash when scrapping a vehicle.

    So what is the best way to rid yourself of an ageing car? Where can you obtain the best price? And how can you be sure the buyer isn’t some rogue who will take your car, yet leave you still liable for potential speeding tickets and fines?

    Selling is probably the best place to start (full disclosure: The Guardian Media Group has a 50% share in the company, although it last month announced it was selling this). You can enter your car registration and mileage for free, then it finds the vehicle and gives an immediate suggested selling price. Advertising on the site costs from 9.99 to 19.99. In my case it said the car was worth around 600. But what the computer didn’t know was that the MOT and tax was due to run out in three days’ time, there was no proper service history, and I was pretty sure it would fail the MOT – and, with a corroded battery, even jump-starting looked out of the question.

    Gumtree is another option. Its chief advantage is that advertising is free (although it will encourage you to pay for premium services) and clearly the site has lots of old bangers like mine for sale. But again, with just days to go before I risked being clamped for failing to have a tax disc, I decided against.

    How about It offered 285, but it prefers you have an MOT lasting at least one month and two sets of keys – both fails for my Alfa. Plus (something of a problem) I’d have to drive it to a local centre. and they’re not keen on non-runners in any case.

    Trading in your old car when buying a new one is discouraged as bad value by many motoring experts. Back in November I bought a new car, and at that point thought it might be useful to keep the Alfa as a second vehicle, given it was still taxed and insured for a few months. But those months slip away, and I realise now that had I traded it in then (for around 400) I would have saved a lot of hassle.


    The good news is that the days when drivers had to trawl round dodgy car breaking yards are over. Now just pop scrap my car into Google and up comes dozens of companies that promise to collect your car within days – and pay you as well.

    But are these safe? The first one I emailed gave me an instant quote of 120 – and rang almost immediately, saying they’d pop round in an hour. And this was a Sunday afternoon. It’s the sort of offer that rings alarm bells; were they a registered scrap dealer? (he mumbled something about a certificate coming soon); would he pay cash? (should be able to – which later I realised is a no-no); and would it definitely be scrapped? (er, he might sell it abroad). At this point I realised more research was necessary.

    Rules introduced in 2005 make it a legal requirement that any car sent to be scrapped must go to an Authorised Treatment Facility. All car scrapyards must have a licence issued by the Environment Agency or Scottish Environment Protection Agency to ensure that scrapped vehicles don’t harm the environment (all that battery acid, gearbox oil and engine parts) and that they are recycled appropriately.

    All the car scrapping sites that came up on my Google search allowed me to enter my car registration and came back with quotes for how much they’d pay me. The range was between 150- 200 if I took the car to the yard, or 50 or so less if I wanted it collected from home.

    Which sites should you trust? Under the EU directive, the car manufacturers are ultimately responsible for ensuring vehicles are recycled properly, and that cars can be disposed of for free.

    Many have linked up with either or which says it has handled the destruction of 1.25m cars. Ford in the UK says is its recycling partner, while Toyota is linked to, although both sites deal with virtually all brands of car.

    They don’t scrap the car themselves but get a local recycling centre to contact you. In my case, both offered around 150 for home collection.

    What happens next? Dig out your V5 ownership document, follow the instructions and send the relevant part to the DVLA, which should confirm to you that you’re no longer responsible for the car. The scrap dealer should send you a Certificate of Destruction, and should also tell the DVLA you don’t own the car anymore.

    If the dealer says they’ll pay you in cash it’s a sure sign they are dodgy. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, introduced last October to combat metal theft, particularly copper from railway lines, it is illegal for anyone to pay cash for scrap cars. Most will issue a cheque or make a payment directly into your bank account. When selling, you have to give proof of identification, such as your driving licence or passport.

    Remember to claw back any road tax or insurance you have on the vehicle. You can reclaim any unused complete months of road tax from the DVLA by downloading form V14 and returning it along with your tax disc to the DVLA.

    Giving it away

    There are a number of organisations that will take your clapped-out car and donate the money to charity. The leading one is while operates Oxfam runs a donation service at which since 2006 has raised 100,000-plus through the sale of more than 350 cars.

    A Kissimmee police officer was charged after he slammed into an employee’s car in the parking lot of a Brevard County strip club and left the scene, records show.

    Sgt. Bruce Connors, 36, was charged in early October with leaving the scene of a crash after ramming the car parked outside the Lido Cabaret in Cocoa Beach, records show.

    He was relieved of duty 21 days later on Oct. 30 and placed on paid administrative leave. Connors, who joined the department in 2004, earns $66,000 a year.

    The department has launched an internal affairs investigation of the incident. Police Chief Lee Massie declined comment.

    Surveillance video of the crash shows an employee of the strip club dressed in a thong and corset running after Connors’ pickup moments after he hit rammed her 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan on Oct. 9 and sped away, records show.

    The club already knew who he was and where he lived. A week earlier, Connors had been drinking there and left without paying his tab. The club has a policy that anyone running a tab must hand over a credit card and driver’s license until the bill is paid, according to officer manager Vanessa Castillo.

    Castillo gave investigators a photo copy of Connors’ driver’s license that identified his home address as the Kissimmee Police Department.

    Videos from the club’s surveillance cameras released by the Brevard-Seminole State Attorney’s Office show Connors and two friends walk out of the club shortly before the crash. Connors kicked off his sandals and began shadow boxing barefoot on the pavement.

    After slipping his sandals back on, Connors dropped his keys and took a moment to retrieve them before opening the driver’s door of his truck. After sitting for about a minute, he put the pickup in gear and immediately struck the classic car parked next to him, the video shows.

    The defendant struck the Oldsmobile, stopped, changed the direction of his front wheels, drove further continuing to strike, a Brevard County Sheriff’s investigator wrote after watching the video. The defendant stopped for a moment, then fled the scene.

    That’s when Jessica Bruce, 27, the car’s owner and a bartender at the strip club, came out of the club and began running after Connors’ pickup which briefly stopped at an intersection before speeding away. The sheriff’s office described noticeable damage to the Cutlass’ front bumper, hood, driver’s side fender and wheel well.

    Bruce could not be reached for comment.

    Records state Connors was advised of his Miranda rights to remain silent and told the crash investigator he was driving. struck the vehicle that was next to him and he fled the scene.

    In January, he received his agency’s employee-of-the-month award.

    Connors has distinguished himself within the department by proving that he is a hardworking, strong leader and team player. His can-do attitude and willingness to help is second to none, records state. He is a true team player and great leader, who displays a high degree of dedication to his position and his department.

    Whether you’re trying to track down a bad driver or someone who keeps leaving their car outside your house, you can often find out who they are and how to contact them from their license plate number and a simple Google search. Security expert Brandon Gregg explains:

    You would be surprised that even license plate information can be found online. An old trick I use to use back in the day was searching Government Smog check sites for the plate. Not only would they say if the car passed or not, often the website would list the smog shop that serviced the car or VIN # of the car. Then I would search on the VIN # for more details and/or ask the smog shop for the vehicle owner’s information.

    If that doesn’t work, Brandon also notes that there are a few other options available to you. While it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get the information covertly, you can use a Request for Record Information (INF 70) form to identify a car owner. Additionally, some states (like my home state of Minnesota allow you to go to a simple database site and pay a small fee. TLO is one example and will get you the make, model, and color of the vehicle as well.

    Using these techniques is a small invasion of a person’s privacy, but it’s always good to know what kind of information a motivated person could dig up about you. (Make sure you have a good reason for doing so before you start identifying license plates left and right.)

    It does not matter whether you are selling your current car or buying a pre-owned. Knowing how to calculate the estimated value of the car is paramount in making sure that you get the best value for your money. The overall value of a car is made up of the “Paper Value” and the “Body Value”. Let us start with understanding what constitutes the “Paper Value”.


    The term “Paper Value” is the most commonly used term in the pre-owned market. It is the money you get back from the government when you de-register your car, thus making it the only money you will get back in the case of a total loss to the car (i.e. major accident).

    There are two components that will make up a car’s Paper Value. They are the “PARF” benefit and the “COE rebate”.

    PARF Benefit

    PARF Benefit is a rebate given when you de-register your car before it’s tenth year of age. A car older than 10 years old will not be eligible for this rebate.

    In order to better understand what residual value means with cars, it is important to take a look at each word’s definition. A residual is the part that is left after some has been taken away. For example, think of any left over pieces of pizza as the residual of a whole pizza. Next, take a look at the word value, which is the amount that something is worth. So, residual value of a car is the amount that it is worth after some of its original worth is gone. In other words, residual value can be described as the future value of a car in terms of percentage of depreciation of its initial value.

    Residual value takes on a different meaning for car leases. Here’s a common example used to help explain the residual value of cars for auto leasing. You lease a car that has an MSRP (the manufacturer’s suggested retail price) of $20,000 and a residual value of 50% after 36 months and 50,000 miles. This means that you and your leasing company have agreed that your car will have a residual value of $10,000 at the end of your lease period of 36 months. Then, at that time, you have the option to purchase the vehicle at $10,000- regardless of market value.

    The residual value of the car is also what your monthly lease payments. To calculate your monthly lease payments, divide the term of the lease (the length of the lease in months) into the depreciated value (the MSRP subtracted by the residual value set by the leasing company). For example, you are considering leasing a car with a MSRP of $20,000 and a residual value of $15,000, or 25%, for 36 months (to keep it simple, don’t worry about mileage). Thus, the depreciated value on the car is $5,000. If you divide $5,000 by 36 months, then your monthly lease payments will be $139 per month plus interest, taxes, and fees- sorry, but you can’t forget or ignore these extra costs. The next logical question is, perhaps, how are residual values determined?

    Residual values are actually just estimated values. Residual value is not an exact science. A vast number of factors determine a car’s residual value, for example its age, condition, and predicted market value. With that in mind, always remember that a car’s residual value is just a very well-educated estimation of a vehicle’s future value at the conclusion of its lease agreement. So, leasing companies can only do their best to estimate the residual value of a vehicle.

    With that said, leasing companies need to be very good at predicting residual values of cars, in order to stay competitive and be profitable. Yet, the residual values offered by different leasing companies can, and do, vary significantly. The reason for these differences depend on what a leasing company’s financial goals are: to profit from the front-end or the back-end of the lease agreement.

    Some auto leasing companies prefer to profit on the front-end of a lease agreement. Which means they will offer higher-than-average auto residual values in order to sell as many leases as possible. Because a high residual value of a car will result in a lower monthly lease payment, they will offer lease agreements with higher-than-average residual values to entice as many customers as possible. Plus, if customers decide to buy the car at the end of the lease period, they have to buy it from the leasing company at an inflated price- due to the higher-than-average residual value. Car manufacturers and large dealerships tend to prefer lease agreements of this nature.

    Other auto leasing companies, conversely, prefer to profit on the back-end of a lease agreement. These companies offer lease agreements with lower-than-average auto residual values. Remember, a lower residual value means a higher monthly payment. These leasing companies have to gain as much profit as they can during the term of the lease because they do not have the capability of selling enough leases to make a profit on the front-end. However, if customers decide to buy the car at the end of the lease period, then the leasing company must sell it to them at a deflated price (less than market value), because of the low residual value. On the other hand, if the customer decides not to buy, then the leasing company also profits by selling the car at or above market value. Independent leasing companies and small dealerships tend to prefer this type of lease agreement.

    Regardless of an auto leasing company’s financial goals, there is a lot of competition either way. So realistically, you don’t really care how or why a leasing company determines their residual values. Because, similar to a leasing company’s goals, choosing a leasing agreement depends on your financial goals. In fact, you can use a car’s residual value to figure out how to get the best deal possible. If your goal is to find the lowest monthly payment and you have no interest in buying the car after the lease agreement, then you should look for the car you want with the highest residual value. But, if your plan is to actually buy the car after the lease agreement (because you didn’t want, or couldn’t afford, to put down the down-payment), then look for the lowest residual value with the highest monthly lease agreement you can realistically afford.

    Always, consider your needs and goals. You really should research all of your options before you decide on a lease agreement. Also know, you cannot negotiate a car’s residual value on a leasing agreement. However, you can negotiate a starting price (although unlikely when leasing) below MSRP, which will save you money, since the depreciation value is calculated using the MSRP and not a negotiated starting price. Ultimately, you must shop for the best car lease agreement that is right for you. Since most dealerships use different leasing companies, or their own, they are all competing for your business, and you will be able find the best lease option for you.

    Although the Kelley Blue Book dates to the 1920s, it didn’t publish a consumer edition until 1993. By 1996, consumers could visit the company’s website,, to find values for new and used cars. You can still calculate values from book editions, but it’s easier and quicker to use the site’s online tools, which give you a free value in just a couple of minutes. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get this exact price for your car, but it’s a useful starting point and negotiating tool when you sell, either to a private party or dealer.

    You can check the value of your vehicle on the KBB website by selecting the Check My Car’s Value button on the home page. To start your valuation, enter data in various steps to help the site identify pricing factors as precisely as it can. For example, the tool asks you to:

    • Enter your zip code.
    • Enter your car’s make, model, year and mileage.
    • Choose your car’s style.
    • Add equipment if your car has optional extras above the standard specs.
    • Choose whether you’re planning a private sale or dealership trade-in.

Good cars don’t have significant mechanical problems but may have some cosmetic defects that can be fixed, while Fair cars have cosmetic problems that need repair or even replacement. Note that the site doesn’t give valuations for cars that don’t at least meet its Fair condition requirements.

    Once you’ve entered all your details, the site goes to the Your Blue Book Value page, which shows you a range of prices for both private sales and dealership trade-ins. The Private Party option shows you one price for each condition classification; the Trade-in to a Dealer option also shows a low-high range. Valuations start at Fair and go up in stages through Good. Very Good and Excellent. The better the condition of the car, the higher its value.


      • You might not be able to value a new car that is only a few months old. The Blue Book only provides valuations when it has enough data on used sales to create dependable values.
      • The Blue Book database doesn’t contain values for luxury cars such as Ferrari and Lotus, as their low sales data don’t allow for reliable valuations. KBB recommends that owners of these cars arrange private valuations.

    Find Kelley Blue Book Values for Older Cars

    Blue Book values on the Kelley website officially go back 21 years. If your car is a year or so older than that, check the site anyway, as it sometimes has a couple of extra years in its database. For example, as of April 2015, you can search for vehicles back to 1992.

    To find the value of an older car, you can’t use the website tool. However, the company produces a collector’s edition of the Blue Book that covers vehicles that are more than 21 years old going back to 1946. You can subscribe to the book, buy a single copy or request a certified copy of a specific value by calling Kelley’s customer service department on 1-800-258-3266.


    You can also use the KBB website to find cash offers from local dealers and place classified ads to sell your car.

    1. Nissan Versa 1.6 S: $12,815 (including destination charge)

    The least-expensive new car you can buy also happens to be one of my favorite cars on this list. The Versa isn t some undersized econobox; instead it s a surprisingly roomy four-door sedan that offers nearly as much interior space as a mid-size car like the Toyota Camry — and for a little more than half the price.

    The styling is a bit homely and creature comforts are few and far between, but the Versa does come with air conditioning, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and a CD stereo as standard. That said, it lacks power windows or locks, the latter virtually a must-have if you re hauling kids, and if you want an automatic transmission, the price rises rather steeply to $14.315. But the rest of the options are reasonably priced; a top-of-the-line Versa SL with power windows and locks, a fuel-efficient CVT automatic transmission, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and navigation — navigation, for cryin out loud! — costs less than a basic two-door Honda Civic. Not only is the Versa America s cheapest car, it s also America s best family-car value.

    Despite its age, this model is still popular as a low-priced fuel-efficient commuter. It’s a very simple and reliable car that is easy to maintain.     The Maxima is a sporty firm-riding sedan with good handling and a powerful V6. Rare for a V6 car, the Maxima is also available with a stick shift. With the 2004 redesign though, the reliability dropped; automatic transmission problems in the 2004-2006 Maxima are fairly common. For 2007, the CVT became the only transmission option. Overall, it’s a fast sporty car, but repairs are expensive. Opt for the 2007 or newer model. The 2007 Maxima is rated at 19/25 mpg or 12.4/9.4 L/100 km.

    Mazda RX8 has a rotary engine that readlines at 9000 rpms. The RX8 handles very good, but to get to the power, you have to rev the engine very high. Overall it’s a nice, very unique car, however, it’s not a very good choice to buy used, especially with high mileage. The rotary engine is not very durable and is picky to the maintenance and oil quality. Fuel economy is a big minus too. The 2009 Mazda RX8 manual is rated at 16/22 mpg or 14.7/10.7 L/100 km city/highway.
