    Comparing Car Costs: Buy New, Buy Used or Lease?

    How does the cost of buying a new car compare to leasing the same car? And if you decide to buy a used car, how much would you save over buying or leasing a new car? Finally, what impact will those decisions have a few years from now when you’re ready to shop again?

    It’s hard to give one definitive answer that covers all people and all situations, but here’s the short version: If your only concern is making the most sensible financial decision for acquiring the car, buy a used one, pay it off and keep it for a few years.

    Used cars aren’t for everyone, however. If you want the latest technology or like having a new car every three years, buying new or leasing are the routes to take. If a low monthly payment is your primary goal, leasing might be the best approach.

    To compare the costs of leasing, buying new and buying used, we’ll use a popular vehicle in our examples: a compact SUV. Most owners in the U.S. keep their new and used vehicles for 79 months just over 6.5 years That’s the length of ownership we are assuming here. To match that period, we are basing the leasing example on two back-to-back three-year leases, totaling 72 months. You can see the other assumptions behind these examples at the end of the story:

    Leasing: The average lease cost is based on a compact SUV that sells for $27,142 and has drive-off fees of $2,038. For the lease’s interest rate, better known as the money factor, we’ve used the average amount: 0.000833. This results in a $330 monthly payment for three years. We used the same numbers for the second three-year lease.

    Buying New: The average amount financed for a new car is about $26,830, with a down payment of $3,181. The average interest rate is 4.5 percent, resulting in a monthly payment of $426.

    Buying Used: The average amount financed for a 3- or 4-year-old compact SUV is $18,691 with an average down payment of $2,275. The interest rate for used-car loans is usually higher than for new, and in our case it would be about 7.2 percent. These factors result in a monthly payment of $344.

    After six years, here are the total out-of-pocket costs for each financing method:

    In terms of out-of-pocket spending, leasing costs $5,846 less over six years than buying a new car, excluding any repair costs the new car might incur. The out-of-pocket cost of buying a used car is $2,870 cheaper than leasing and a $8,716 cheaper than buying a new car. We have excluded any costs of repair for the used car.

    What Did Your Money Get You?

    Here is something essential to remember about the apparent lower cost of leasing versus buying new: At the end of a leasing cycle, you don’t own the car. Generally speaking, you have to start a new lease-or-buy cycle.

    But if you’d bought a new car and were now at the end of the ownership cycle, you’d have a 6-year-old vehicle that would have about 72,000 miles on the odometer. It would be worth roughly $9,800 as a trade-in, according to Edmunds data. If you’d bought a used car, it would now be about 9 years old. It would have about 108,000 miles and would be worth about $6,000 as a trade-in.

    You could potentially earn a couple thousand more dollars by selling to a private party. But most people are likely to opt for the convenience of a trade-in at the dealership.

    When we deduct that used-car equity from the out-of-pocket costs of acquiring the car, the long-term cost picture changes. Buying new looks like a better deal than leasing. Buying used still is the thriftiest way to go, however.

    In this basic comparison, if you’d leased two compact SUVs back to back, you would have paid $3,954 more to drive them for six years than you would if you bought a new vehicle.

    If you’d bought a used compact SUV, you would have saved $8,840 over leasing during this six-year cycle. Buying used rather than buying new would have saved $4,886.

    Leasing doesn’t look great in this dollars-only analysis, but there are factors in its favor:

    Since a lease is usually for three years, the vehicle is always under warranty. You avoid the hassle of out-of-warranty repairs and costly maintenance. You do have to pay for routine maintenance, but that usually involves just oil changes and tire rotation. You can avoid maintenance costs altogether if you lease a new car that has afree maintenance program.

    You have the opportunity to buy the leased vehicle. The finance company sets the purchase price at the beginning of the lease, and often that’s the current market value of the vehicle at the end of the lease.

    Leasing protects you against unexpected depreciation. If the market value of the car unexpectedly drops because of a shift in the market, brought about by such things as rising gas prices, you aren’t hurt. Conversely, if the lease car holds its value especially well, you can buy the car at a bargain price at the end of the lease and either keep or resell it. In some cases, people can leverage equity in leased cars.

    Leasing offers an attractive tax deduction if you use the car for business. An accountant is the best resource for more information on this subject.

    Other aspects of leasing are more difficult to monetize but appeal to some shoppers:

    Leasing offers the enjoyment and prestige of driving a newer car more often.

    Leasing provides a new car that has the latest safety, technology and comfort features.

    Once you’ve paid off a car, ownership has several advantages over leasing:

    You’re free to bank or invest the money that you used to spend on your monthly payment. You also can apply that money to household expenses or set it aside as a repair and maintenance fund for the car you own.

    You have the flexibility to sell the car when you want to, not when the lease is up.

    You can modify the car exactly as you want without fears that you will break the terms of your lease contract.

    You don’t have to worry about excess wear and tear, which you could be required to pay for on a leased car.

    You don’t have to worry about excess mileage penalties.

    Remember that financing a new or used car only starts to make financial sense when you’ve paid the loan in full. You need to keep the vehicle for a while to enjoy months or years without car payments. But of course, if you drive the car for years and years and pile on the mileage, you diminish its value. Unless it’s a classic vehicle, a car is a depreciating asset.

    While on paper the used vehicle might be the least expensive option, you might not be comfortable handling repairs on an aging vehicle. Or if you’ve always purchased your vehicles only to get bored with them in a few years, leasing might be the better option. Do your own calculations, factor in the intangibles, and the best decision for you will emerge.

    How We Arrived at the Numbers

    Here are the assumptions we made for the three different deals:

    Length of ownership: For new and used cars, we used the current average car ownership period of 79 months, or just over 6.5 years

    Length of lease: Most people lease for three years. We assumed the costs involved in two lease cycles (72 months) to better match the 79-month ownership period for new and used cars.

    Average new-car loan term and interest: The average loan term for a new car in 2017 was 69 months, or just under six years. We assumed a 72-month new-car loan, which is close to the 69-month average and matches the length of leases in our leasing example.

    Average used-car loan term and interest: The average used-car loan is slightly shorter than that of a new-car loan. We used a 66-month loan for the used-car example.

    I purchased about a dozen mowers that were about 7 – 8 years old. I paid $100 – $150 for MTD and had difficulty selling for $300.00. I paid up to $300 for Craftsman and usually sold them for about $500.00. All were serviced and cleaned up like showroom. One craftsman had the 46 cubic inch opposed twin and was real clean – $700.00.

    Most people who have premium dollars will simply buy a new mower. Our friends who look for a used mower are usually on a very limited budget. About 50% of the original price is what they are willing to pay.

    I have a ’05 Craftsman LT1000 tractor I bought slightly used from my local Sears outlet in 2006. Apparently someone bought it and after a couple months decided they didn’t want it. Weird. But I made an offer on the tractor (it had a flat tire) and I saved about $200 off the cost of a comparable new one. Plus this tractor came with grass catching bins and rear bin rack and spare mulching blades. I recently moved and my brother-in-law gave me his Craftsman garden tractor (one-year-newer than mine). So my question is what should I list my tractor for? It features 42 deck, B S 18 hp, auto trans and can mow in forward or reverse. It’s been a great tractor with few issues; arguably it’s better than the one I got from my brother-in-law. Thoughts?

    I’m saying that bluemower may have been able to get them for less, not what the seller can get. The ones I bought back in 2000ish had no major problem that’s why i bought them – 1 last owner fiddled with and did not reassemble the overhead lifter rods properly so the valves didn’t open, the other one valve just needed to be reground. So neither ones i looked at had bad motors and just needed small repairs.

    Like i said- when u compare apples to apples, green paint will get u more when selling leaving people like me who get (and still own\use) 80’s sears riders for the $50 i paid 16 years ago. So people who pay 300 for a used sears are not up to speed with what they could get it for if u know where to look or are patient.

    So like i said, similar JD’s that have the same grade of construction and use the same motors thus similar problems but because they are green, certain market will pay more for them so that dealer only sells used JD’s just like i get Stihl stuff for $20 and typically can get $100- 99% of the time a dirty carb problem. Good luck doing the same with a sears trimmer.

    • Survivor: This is a car that is basically as it left the factory. There may be some wear and tear, but it shows what a “real” car is like. While some high performance cars are bought new specifically for resale later, others are so rare that it’s hard to predict their value before a sale. These types of vehicles mostly go to museums and serious collectors, making them an ideal candidate for antique car auctions and national sales like eBay.
    • Restored: Major work has been done to these cars, but they’ve been kept in a form close to how they would have been equipped when they came off the line. A “numbers matching” engine has the same VIN stamped on it as the firewall, which means it’s the one the car came with from the factory.

    Generally, the nicer a vehicle looks, the higher its value will be. Classic car guides like NADA’s will give you a general idea of a price, but the actual sale price will deviate more than a newer car due to differences in condition.

    • Resto-mod: This is a car that has been updated with modern components to make it a daily driver. This can be as simple as switching to a different engine, or can be a ground-up build with a modern car covered in a vintage body. Even the best resto-mod will only sell for the equivalent cost of a new vehicle with similar equipment.
    • Hot rods: These vehicle are affected more by fads than any other car because they’re all about style. Reproduction parts have become so popular you can build a ’32 Ford Roadster hot rod entirely from things found in a catalog, so being able to show what parts of the car are original can improve its value.

    There is another subset of cars that strives to use period-correct hot rod parts. In the case of the ’32 Ford, this type of car would be powered by a flathead Ford with Offenhauser heads rather than the ubiquitous Chevy small block.     Ask the Readers: Should I Sell My Car?

    The Friday Ask the Readers column generally follows a set format: I introduce the topic, share a reader e-mail, give my best advice, and then ask for your feedback. Today s column is a little different. Sarah sent me a 1000-word question, and rather than write any sort of response, I m just going to let her have the entire space. Everything that follows is from Sarah.

    I have a question for other GRS readers. It’s a simple question: Should I sell my car? It actually seems to have a very simple answer: Yes.

    I keep writing lists and outlining the reasons why I should sell my car (and why I shouldn’t), and the balance lies very clearly in favor of selling my car. And yet I’m having the hardest time selling my car.

    Why? I’m a practical, logical, pragmatic person. Why is this so hard to do? Why is selling my car so difficult? Even with the facts laid out, staring me in the face, I’m having the hardest time selling my car.

    Why I Bought a Car in the First Place

    I used to live completely car-free. I lived in different cities and only walked, bused, or biked to get around occasionally living the high life and taking a taxi when I felt like being luxurious. And then I moved to California.

    I bought a car last year. I purchased a 2010 Toyota Matrix from a dealer, priced at $17,490, with a $1000 rebate for being a recent college grad. The Kelly Blue Book value of the car, at new, was $20,049. My purchase price was $16,490. With taxes, registration, and fees, I forked over $19,009. As a somewhat-savvy consumer, I secured a three-year financing plan with 0% interest.

    I bought the car because I lived 40 miles from my job, commuting an hour each way (through San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge), and there wasn’t sufficient public transportation to get me to and from my job.

    I ve now owned (and paid for) the car for 12 months, spending $6800 on car payments. I have $12,200 left to pay on the car over a two-year period.

    The cost of the car has been unbelievable. In one year, these are the costs:

    • Car payments $529 per month
    • 20,000 miles total
      • 25 mpg average
      • gas price is $3.15 in California
      • $2520 for gas, or
      • $210 per month in gasoline
    • Maintenance for one year (four tune-ups at $109 each) $436 ($36 per month for maintenance)
    • Insurance $109 per month for insurance (AAA)
    • Bridge Tolls (crossing the Golden Gate Bridge every day costs $5) $80 per month
    • Parking. I’m lucky to have free parking, mostly, unless I drive downtown $50 per month is my average for parking

    Every month, I spend about $1014 on driving and owning the car. $1014! This is roughly one third of my take-home income. What would I do with $1014 per month.

    In addition, I have a substantial amount of debt from undergraduate and graduate student loans (in the realm of $80,000) that I’m currently working hard to pay off. The student loan payments are $679 per month. I struggle to make the car payment and the student loan payment each month.

    Today: The Current Situation

    In November, I moved back to San Francisco, because I couldn’t stand the long commute. Commuting through city traffic is tiring and psychologically draining; I quickly remembered why I dislike driving so much. In contrast, San Francisco is a hub of public transportation options sometimes better or worse, depending on the neighborhood that you live in.

    I now live eight miles from my job in Sausalito. The drive takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Parking at my job is easy, but parking in San Francisco is a nightmare it can take up to 40 minutes to find a parking spot. I have the option of purchasing a parking spot, but those cost upwards of $300 in a city like San Francisco, and I can’t stomach how much I’m already spending on the car alone.

    I now have alterative means for getting to work. For example, I can bike to work a few days per week, depending on the day and the weather. There s also a bus line that goes to and from my work on the hour, and takes about 30-40 minutes to get to work (it doubles my commute time, but I don’t have to worry about parking, driving, or concentrating on the road).

    The (Easy) Conclusions

    I worry that it’s a mistake to sell my car after owning it for one year. My parents tell me that I should wait it out for the next two years, buckle down, and just finish making the payments because I need a car and can’t possibly live without one. People suggest that it’s foolish to buy a brand new car and sell a car within the first year of ownership.

    However, I also think that sunk costs are sunk costs. What I’ve already spent on the car is gone; it s what I spend in the future that s still up for determination. I think it makes sense for me to sell my car.

    Here are some reasons I think I should sell my car:

    • Living in a city with ample public transportation, alternative car-sharing options, bicycle riding, and walking makes having a car a luxury, not a necessity.
  • Getting rid of $12,200 of unpaid debt is a good thing.
  • There are additional costs to car ownership insurance, gas, parking, maintenance that will continue to add up over time. (To the tune of about $450 per month.)
  • The current value of my car ($14,000) is more than I owe on my payments ($12,200)
  • But wait! There s more!

    • A car is a depreciating asset, and will not add any value over time. Struggling to make these payments does not help me reduce or eliminate debt in other areas of my life.
  • Public transportation to work costs $4 each way, or approximately $160 per month.
  • If I also choose to use a car-sharing program on the weekends, I would spend between $50 and $75 for a weekend use but the cost would be elective, and not fixed.
  • If I don’t spend the money on the car, I can spend the money on other things that are more important.
  • It seems painfully clear, on paper, that I should sell my car. And yet I get in and drive it every single day to teach swim lesson after work, to dinner parties, to events, on trips to Tahoe, on excursions. I am afraid of selling my car. Psychologically and emotionally, I’m attached to it. I also stubbornly don’t want to admit I made a mistake in buying the car in the first place.

    So tell me, fellow GRS readers, what should I do? Can I afford to sell my car? Can I afford not to?

That s a very important thing to remember in making these sorts of decisions. (What you ve spent already is irrelevant; it s what you spend going forward that matters.)     Auto-Finder Review: Dude, where s my car?

    In the mid 1990s, my best friend and I took a trip to DisneyWorld in Orlando.  Every time we returned to the parking lot, we faced a familiar scenario:  We couldn t find our rental car.  Simply too many cars!  Adding insult to injury, our rental car was a red Chevrolet Corsica which was a staple of rental car agencies back then.

    When I saw the Auto-Finder from Finder Technologies. I knew I wanted to try this.  You see, my undergraduate senior design thesis was on radio-direction finding methods.  I ve participated in many amateur radio fox hunts , where a buddy hides somewhere in town and a bunch of college guys without girlfriends on a Saturday night (yes I was one of them) run all over the hills with radio receivers trying to find the hidden fox .  Oh yes, a fun bunch we were. Would the Auto-Finder lead the way?

    The basic kit is composed of a battery-operated beacon that stays in your car, a keyfob locator and a leatherette carry case.

    • Three LEDs for direction indication
    • A speaker that produces tones proportional to correct direction
    • Two custom, patented antennas used for determining directionality

    This wedge-shaped object is powered by three AA batteries and can be attached inside your car with the supplied hook-and-loop tape.

    The keyfob is roughly the size of an everday car alarm fob, although perfectly square.  Fits into the included carry pouch perfectly if you don t wish to attach another fob to your key ring.

    So how does it work?  To test this, I tried the Auto-Finder in two typical parking setups:  Inside a concrete parking structure with lots of hard surfaces, and while parked in an outdoor, open-air flat parking lot.  I knew reflected radio waves were going to be the enemy, so I thought this was prudent.

    To operate the Auto-Finder you simply press the keyfob button.  It sends a signal to the beacon.  The beacon then sends a locating signal for the keyfob to home in on.  So far, so good.

    The keyfob has three green LED arrows.  The stronger the signal, the more arrows.  There s also a chirping speaker inside the keyfob that beeps with increasing tone and frequency the hotter you get.  All this makes perfect sense.

    What I found, however, that the Auto-Finder is easily confused by reflected waves and bombards you with a cacophony of bleeps in rapidly changing tones.  The green LEDs were not much help, either;  They would frantically flash to the beat of the beeps, seldom providing any useful information.

    The instructions suggest sweeping around in an arc while standing in place:

    • Stop
    • Press the Search button and slowly scan the whole parking area
    • Observe the sounds and arrows for the strongest indication
    • Release the Search button
    • Walk in the direction of the strongest indication

    I got many odd stares by passers by as I was using this modern-day divining rod.  I was used to it.  After all, I m a geek.

    What surprised me was there was no change in accuracy or usability for me in a concrete parking structure vs. an open air one.  In either case, the Auto-Finder appeared overwhelmed by all the signals and spat out bleeps and beeps and green lights.

    One thing that did work, however:  If you are VERY close to your car, the Auto-Finder s beeps change into a constant tone.  BEEEEEEEEEEEP.   This is better than nothing.  But at this point, if you re right next to your car and need this kind of electronic assistance, you may be better served honking your horn with your car s remote.

    Does it work?  Sort of.  But I can appreciate the kind of challenges in a a product like this.  The remote itself is very small, so the antenna receiver design is limited.  A receiver sensitivity switch or knob would be handy, allowing the user to fine tune and reject stronger multipath signals.   But adding that would be difficult to explain to non-techies.

    In the end, I like the idea.  It doesn t rely on GPS so you don t need a clear view to the sky.  It doesn t draw attention to yourself by honking the horn of your vehicle (although you may get strange looks as you re beeping away).  You can even purchase a multi-unit kit for the entire family.  It may need a little more work before it earns a permanent place on my key ring, however.

    What did we do with our rented red Chevy Corsica?  We tied a green ribbon to the radio aerial.  It was the only way!

    My New Car Negotiation Trade-In Strategy Enacted

    If you ve been following along, you know that my dying car. a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, was on its last legs and I needed to move quick.

    At last check, I had decided that my best car buying strategy was to go new vs. used, due to the inflated prices on used cars at the present time.

    Beyond that, given the current incentives on new cars, I found the best new car value to be the 2012 Chevy Malibu, as GM was offering a total of $3,500 in rebates. Additionally, I had $2,000 in cash rewards from an old GM card I used heavily a few years ago, for a grand total of $5,500 off, before negotiation.

    I didn t want to stop there though. So I started researching.

    Researching Car Prices Before Negotiating

    The base Malibu was plenty of car for me:

    • 17 alloy wheels with performance tires
    • power windows, doors, seats
    • keyless entry
    • AM/FM/XM/MP3/CD
    • AC
    • 6 air bags
    • cruise
    • automatic trans w/ manual tap shifting

    all things you typically have to pay up for on entry level cars. For me, to ask for anything more? Greedy.

    Before you try to negotiate with a dealer, it s important to know EXACTLY what car you want. I wanted the base Malibu, with no additional options.

    Once you know that, find out what the MSRP is. MSRP is a good I should never pay more than this starting point, but that is all. For the Malibu, the MSRP was $22,870.

    The next price you should find is the dealer cost. You can find this at TrueCar.com .

    TrueCar listed this at $21,654 for the base Malibu, before rebates.

    TrueCar also lists the market average of what that car is selling for. The Malibu LS was averaging a sale price of $22,406 (before rebates).

    Let the Car Negotiating Over Email Begin

    Armed with this info. my next step was to email 5 Chevy dealerships. You can find a contact email on their website or the email address for their internet sales manager (all dealers have one these days).

    I would much rather do all of my negotiation work BEFORE going to a dealership so that you can avoid any chaos or sales tactics when you arrive, but that s just me.

    My email read like this:

    I am interested in buying a 2012 Chevy Malibu LS, with no added options, this weekend. Please give me your best offer on this vehicle including all fees, but excluding tax, title, registration, and any cash rebates or incentives from GM.

    You ll notice that my simple email:

    1. Lets them know that I m a serious buyer.
    2. Tells them I am comparing offers.
    3. Tells them exactly what vehicle I was looking for (if they don t have it on the lot, they can find one).
    4. Asks for the best price THEY can give me forget all the automaker incentives.
    5. Allows me to get an apple-to-apple comparison between offers.
    6. Asks them to include any and all fees so there were no surprises when I get to the dealership.

    Did I get what I asked for from any of the dealerships? Hell no. Of course not.

    Dealerships negotiate for a living. If they can confuse you, make it seem like they are offering you something other dealerships are not, or just make you tired of asking for answers, they win.

    Rule #1 with negotiation: don t be the one to make the first offer.

    Most tried to work in the cash incentives (offered by GM, not them) to sweeten the overall price. I had to ask them to not do this.

    You have to push and push hard.

    I went back and forth with each dealership over email as few as 10 times and as many as 20 times before I got exactly what I was looking for. STICK TO YOUR ORIGINAL ASK.

    Finally, I got responses from 4 of the dealerships, while one would only offer to beat the best offer . Sorry, but if you can t even give me a price, you re not going to get my business. Tell them as much, if this ever happens to you.

    I had to tell a few I was heading out to another dealership right now before I got their actual offers.

    Two offers were over the $22,870 MSRP. One was $22,500. The best offer came in at $21,914.

    Given that the dealer cost was just $260 under that, I was happy with this offer, so long as the dealer kept to its word of no additional fees.

    On to the Dealership

    I went to the dealership. They had the car I asked for and they said they had (if they don t have what they said they did, you should walk out). I took the car for a test drive, and it checked out.

    It was time to sit down and continue the negotiation.

    I decided not to push further on the $21,914 offer, given it was the best I had received by a decent amount, and was not much higher than the dealer cost.

    We then went through the paperwork on the car, and indeed, there were no additional funny business fees. If there is funny business , that is another reason to walk out a negotiation tactic in its own right.

    Trade-In Negotiation

    Next, it was time to discuss trading in ole Grandy.

    Before going to the dealership, I researched Grandy s market worth so that I knew ahead of time what I wanted to get out of any trade-in negotiations.

    KBB priced the trade-in value at $1,084 and the private-seller value at $2,119 for good condition (the description fit). Given Grandy s recent issues, I felt much better leaving her at a dealership than selling to a private party. If I could get $1,500, I d be satisfied.

    The appraiser at the dealership looked at Grandy and came back with an offer of $1,200.

    I countered at $2,100. They countered at $1,600. I told them to throw in some floor mats.

    Done deal.

    Of course, they tried to sell me some rust-protection, extended warranty crap. I said no , as they expected.

    When all was said and done, the final out-of-pocket was:

    $22,870

    $956 Dealership negotation

    $2,500 GM Chevy Malibu consumer cash

    $500 auto show bonus

    $500 GM loyalty bonus (for trading in the Grand Am)

    $2,000 GM card cash back

    $1,600 trade-in

    = $14,814 (before tax, title, registration)

    Not bad! There were no good financing offers (2% or less is good, in my book), so I paid in cash.

    Could I have done better? Maybe a tad if I had REALLY pushed it, but I think I did pretty good for myself. In the end, I was satisfied with the price and the purchase.

    How much will it cost to paint my car?

    I have a 2001 Honda Accord EX that is a hideous "rental car" tan color. I hate it and wish to get it painted another color. How much do you guys think it will cost me? I know there is a big range on these types of things, I am looking to spend under $1,000.

    There’s no way you will get a decent paint job on a car when you are changing the colour for under $1000. It’ll look like crap and, when the next prospective buyer opens the bonnets and the like, will assume it is of dodgy origin.

    Full changes of colour require a lot of disassembly and reassembly to make sure all the shut lines and internal areas (inside boot edges, door closures and the like) match and this sort of labour is not cheap.

    You may find some back street shop somewhere that will say they can do it. But I’d almost guarantee you’ll be disappointed with the results or lose money on eventual resale because of it. You’d be better off (if you hate the colour so much) to consider $1000 as the budget for changing the car (ie resale cost versus change of ownership cost + new car).

    Crappy link. but the information is true. MAACO will cost under $500 for the lowest quality paint and no repair work. Some of the time dents need to be filled in, which will kick it up towards that $1k mark. If you skip on the repairs for dents, etc. expect to have bubbling or chipping in a few years’ time.

    A quality custom paint job where they do the full disassembly/reassembly to make it "showroom quality" will push $4-5k. Anything else can be found somewhere in between.

    Check for quality of work on other vehicles from the shop before you commit. MAACO’s in particular are known to vary greatly from shop to shop.

    Sell your car and with the $1000 buy a car the color you like.

    Anecdotally, I paid $2000 flat at a MAACO auto paint shop in Boston a couple years back for a complete "showroom quality" repaint on my Integra, including all doorjambs and other interior bits except the underside of the hood. They wanted $2400 initially but I talked them down. This amount also covered quite a few small dent repairs before they applied the new paint job.

    Thanks all, thats kind of what I figured, the car is probably only worth around 4-5k so going nuts would just be irresponsible. (The color isn’t that bad, and I wouldn’t sell it because I do love the car.) I appreciate the advice though!

    Weird – I actually checked your profile because I have a music student, a teenage kid, who asked me about the same question about a very similar car he’s about to "inherit," except his ’01 Accord will be silver instead.

    Yeah, it’s not going to be worth it. Even repainting to the same color will cost minimum $2-3K, and will raise the value of the car $500 TOPS. Save your money and buy a car you like better down the road.

    A very good, minimal to no flaw (orange peel, etc) paint job from a reputable shop can be had for roughly $1500. This would include masking trim, windows, and the like. The proper way to have a car painted to get a "showroom" level job is to have all trim removed, and all glass. You’ve just doubled the price, and then some, depending on paint. Pearlescents and other exotic, multi stage colors can get rather pricey.

    Going back some 15 years I did a frame-off restoration of a 1967 Alfa Romeo Boat tail spider (The car Dustin Hoffman drove in the Graduate). The final part of the resto was a trip to a well known higher end paint shop. I spent about $6000 on the paint work, but this was for a numbers matching, "looks like it did on the showroom floor in 1967" restoration. When I sold the car about 8 years later I got about double what I invested in it.

    But that was an Alfa Romeo. Any mid 80’s back Alfa Romeo that isn’t a rust bucket can arguably be a nice investment as a collector’s item.

    A 2001 Honda Accord, like 98% of cars ever made, is an expense, never an investment. You get anything other than a $300 Maaco paint job on a car like that, you do it for the love. Sure, it’s an illogical decision to spend a lot of money on a car like that, but then again, love often bumps heads with logic. But here’s the question; If you do love this car, why wouldn’t you want to get a paint job done right, that looks great from day one, and for years to come?

    You can’t get that paint job for what you want to spend.

    If you don’t love this car, and you absolutely hate the color but can’t afford buying another car, spend $300 at Maaco. But never look at the paint up close, and be ready to either sell it or get a repaint in a few years. Because a cheap paint job only ever looks passable, and won’t even stay looking like that for long. Good luck!

By 1996, consumers could visit the company’s website, KBB.com, to find values for new and used cars. You can still calculate values from book editions, but it’s easier and quicker to use the site’s online tools, which give you a free value in just a couple of minutes. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get this exact price for your car, but it’s a useful starting point and negotiating tool when you sell, either to a private party or dealer.

    You can check the value of your vehicle on the KBB website by selecting the Check My Car’s Value button on the home page. To start your valuation, enter data in various steps to help the site identify pricing factors as precisely as it can. For example, the tool asks you to:

    • Enter your zip code.
    • Enter your car’s make, model, year and mileage.
    • Choose your car’s style.
    • Add equipment if your car has optional extras above the standard specs.

Very Good and Excellent. The better the condition of the car, the higher its value.

    Warning

      • You might not be able to value a new car that is only a few months old. The Blue Book only provides valuations when it has enough data on used sales to create dependable values.
      • The Blue Book database doesn’t contain values for luxury cars such as Ferrari and Lotus, as their low sales data don’t allow for reliable valuations. KBB recommends that owners of these cars arrange private valuations.

    Find Kelley Blue Book Values for Older Cars

    Blue Book values on the Kelley website officially go back 21 years. If your car is a year or so older than that, check the site anyway, as it sometimes has a couple of extra years in its database. For example, as of April 2015, you can search for vehicles back to 1992.

    To find the value of an older car, you can’t use the website tool. However, the company produces a collector’s edition of the Blue Book that covers vehicles that are more than 21 years old going back to 1946. You can subscribe to the book, buy a single copy or request a certified copy of a specific value by calling Kelley’s customer service department on 1-800-258-3266.

While the searching tool provided by craigslist is a little limited (due to the fact that they carry so many different free product listings) it is still a great portal to sell your used car online; or anything else for that matter. The only negatives I encountered while listing my used car for sale on craigslist is that you can only search locally and not nationwide and that you could only supply up to 4 images for your car ad unless you were an expert at HTML and could figure out how to add more pictures.
  • Placing ads in local newspapers or periodicals Placing an ad in a local newspaper can be a great way to generate interest for your vehicle in your local area. The only negatives about placing a text ad in a local periodical is that in most cases you are limited in the number of words you can use and most do not display images. If an image is allowed it is usually a small grainy black and white photo which does little to promote the car, truck or SUV you are trying to sell.
  • Combining the methods above to sell your used car fast

    By combining two or more of these methods you will receive greater exposure and have the potential to sell your vehicle much quicker when you sell your car online.

You should also understand that you will not know the exact value of your car until you actually settle on a deal. You can only find an estimate from which to begin negotiations.

    There are several Internet resources that will help you find out how much your car is worth. Going online is usually the easiest way to gather this kind of information. The following sites offer respected valuation services for free. Select “Used Car Prices” from the home pages of these sites.

    Before pricing your vehicle at any of these websites, there is some information you will want to have on hand. These include:

    NADA

    KBB

    KBB gives you the options of excellent (like new), good (minor blemishes), fair (needs a little work), poor (major problems). The site will not value cars in poor condition because prices can vary wildly on such cars. If you are unsure how to classify the condition of your car, the website offers a condition quiz to help you. It is the most user-friendly of the sites.

    Edmunds Used Car Appraiser

    Edmunds, one of the newer vehicle valuation sites on the Web, offers condition classifications of outstanding (perfect in and out), clean (minor, normal wear), average (few mechanical or cosmetic problems), rough (several repairs needed), and damaged (major mechanical problems and body damage).  The vehicle appraiser is more visually based that KBB, offering images of the car you are researching during the valuation process.

    Each of these valuation services will give you very different trade-in numbers on the same vehicle. For instance, a 1999 Mercury Mystique with 90,000 miles in New England can have a trade in value ranging from $900 to $2,000, depending on which site you use to value your car.

    You should also understand that seasonal and economic factors influence demand and therefore car prices. For example, a convertible is more valuable in the summer. In the current economic climate, it is nearly impossible to find a GMC pickup for book value. The demand is high and the market scarce for some used vehicles.

    Trading It In

    Once you have done some basic research, call the dealer and start at the highest price for trade in and negotiate a deal. Make sure you keep a list of all the positive points about your car as ammunition for this discussion.

    You should also understand that you can try to sell the car for trade-in value to another dealer. You do not have to use the dealer where you are buying another car. You can simply sell the car to another dealer before buying from the other one.

    Selling Privately

    Look up your car’s value on KBB and Edmunds. NADA’s values are not very effective for private sales because they only classify vehicle conditions for trade-ins. Looking on KBB and Edmunds, the same Mercury Mystique we looked at for trade-in value has a much higher private party value. The range for private party sales was $1,730 to $1,843. This gives you a much better idea of how much you could get for your car on the private market.

    If there is a large gap between the private party values, it is a good idea to peruse AutoTrader and Ebay Motors to find similar cars for sale. This will give you a better idea of the best valuation on your car before you place an ad or park the car out front with a sign on it.

    Total Loss

    If your car is a total loss, you will need to understand the value of your car so you can negotiate a settlement with your insurance company. Use the same method you used for the private party sale value but understand you will have to do some negotiating.

    In most cases, the insurance adjuster offers the lowest reasonable value for the car and it is up to you to talk the adjuster up, based on the condition of your vehicle. The adjuster does not use KBB, NADA or Edmunds. Most insurance companies have private companies that perform valuation services for them. This is the main reason for discrepancies between the insurance company’s opinion of value and yours.

    When negotiating a settlement, understand that some value arguments will only increase the salvage value of your car. This would actually detract from the final settlement check. For instance, if the tires were brand new, they do not increase the overall value of the car because tires are only a maintenance item. However, tires do increase the salvage value, which the insurer deducts from the total settlement amount.

    The things that can increase your settlement value are vehicle options the adjuster did not include in the valuation. This can include items like leather seats, sunroof, spoilers and stereo equipment. Find any documentation you may have to prove you had these additional options and send them to the adjuster as proof. This will make negotiating and settling on a final value easier.

    Can My Student Loan Creditor Garnish My Wages?

    Student loan creditors can garnish your wages if you get behind in payments. Whether your loan is guaranteed by the federal government or not dictates whether the creditor must first sue you in court, and how much it can garnish from your paycheck.

    Here are the rules for student loans guaranteed by the federal government, and student loans not guaranteed by the federal government (private student loans).

    Student Loans Guaranteed By the Federal Government

    Most student loans are guaranteed by the federal government which means that if you fail to pay back the lender, the federal government will ensure that that money gets repaid one way or another.     The Government Doesn’t Need a Judgment to Garnish

    Most creditors must first sue you in court and get a money judgment in order to start garnishing your wages. Creditors that own student loans guaranteed by the federal government, however, get special status. They do not have to get a state court judgment before attempting to garnish your wages.

    Notice and Hearing Requirements Before Garnishment

    Instead, the creditor must send a 30-day notice to your last known address prior to trying to garnish your wages. You can request a hearing before an administrative law judge to make a determination of whether you should garnished. At this hearing, you can contest whether the loan is actually in default or the amount of the debt, or you can tell the judge that you want to enter into a payment plan.

    Even if a garnishment has already started, you may still request a hearing to assert your rights and concerns. However, the garnishment will continue until the guaranty agency holds the hearing and makes a determination.

    How Much Can the Student Loan Creditor Garnish?

    Federal law allows creditors who own student loans guaranteed by the federal government to garnish up to 15% of your disposable income. Disposable income is your after-tax or take-home pay after federal and state taxes are withheld. Your employer will garnish this money and then remit the funds to the appropriate creditor.

    Alternatives to Wage Garnishment

    Keep in mind that student loan creditors usually only resorts to garnishment if you have outright refused to make payments on your student loans. The federal government actually offers several payment alternatives if you are unable to meet your current monthly obligations. If you qualify for one of these programs, you can pay less without going into delinquent status.

    One option is to consolidate your loans into one federal government consolidation loan. This may allow you to get a lower interest rate and to simplify your finances by combining all the monthly payments into to one, easy-to-manage account.

    The federal government offers numerous repayment options once you have consolidated. When you consolidate your student loans with the federal government, you open up your options as it relates to loan repayment.     There are plenty of reasons you might need to find out the value of your car, even if you’re not selling it. If you total your car, knowing how much it was worth before the accident can help get you the most money from your claim. You would also want to know how much it’s worth if you plan to use your car as collateral for a personal loan. And, of course, if you’re buying one, overpaying is the last thing you want to do.

    Get a Value Estimate From Sites Like Kelley or Edmunds

    Now, keep in mind that these values may not be tied to actual cars or car sales. Kelley, for example, determines car value based on a car’s initial price when it was new, market conditions, what people look for, and bunch of other factors. They don’t, however, analyze all used car sales (it would be impossible to track them all, anyway). So, while the KBB value may bear a close resemblance to what you might pay at a used car dealership, you would probably not get that same amount for a trade-in, or even a private sale unless you could prove it’s worth that much.

    Find Listings for Similar Cars

    Unless you’re dealing with very old or very rare cars, someone out there is probably selling a vehicle that’s very similar to yours. Search used car listings in your area for vehicles that are the same make, model, and year as your vehicle and see how much others are charging.

    If you’re dealing with a total loss insurance claim, this will be your best bet for proving the value of your vehicle. The purpose of insurance is to make you whole again in the event of an emergency. You lost your car, so your insurance is supposed to pay you an amount equal to the value of that car. Occasionally, insurance companies will low ball you in an attempt to save money. You can take used car listings to your insurance agent to prove that, if you had to buy your car on the market today, this is how much it would cost. If the amount they offer is significantly lower than that, it’s time to negotiate (though be aware the price can be affected by factors described in the next section).

    Additionally, if you’re selling your car yourself, used car listings are your chance to see what customers are looking for and undercut the competition. Your car may be worth $10,000, but if you’re willing to accept $9,500, you can put your car on the market for that amount and become more attractive to potential buyers (and in doing so, you have an effect on the objective value of your vehicle).

    Finally, in doing your research, be sure to look at similar cars, not just identical ones. Knowing how much your exact year and model of car is worth is a big help, but buyers are probably not quite as picky. If you have a 2005 model vehicle, but the 2007 model is $5,000 more expensive, shoppers looking for a 2007 may be okay with getting something a couple years older if it saves them a bunch of money.

    Factor in Mileage, Condition, and Extras

    Not all cars with the same year, make, and model are created equal. Well, actually, many are created equal because they’re in a factory that way, but they don’t stay like that! Mileage is a huge factor in determining what a car is worth. While some cars last longer than others, a vehicle with less than 50,000 miles on it probably has a lot more life in it than one with 150,000 miles.

    Determining how much the mileage of a car will reduce its value is not exactly a science, and it depends a lot on the age of the vehicle (a 2012 car with 30k miles on it has clearly been driven pretty hard, while a 2001 car with 60k miles on it probably hasn’t been driven much at all). However, in the US, the average person drives between 12k and 15k per year. Any more than that per year that your car has been around will probably reduce the value more, while less than that will probably drive its price up a bit. Again, look to see what other similar cars are going for.

    Mileage isn’t the only extra that can affect a car’s price. Extras such as the sound system, sun roofs, convertible tops, and any other neat thing your car has can increase the cost. Of course, upgrading the CD player to a touchscreen XM radio won’t undo the fact that you drove your car 20k miles every year, but if your car has heated leather seats and an otherwise identical car does not, yours should probably cost a bit more.

    Negotiate Up

    If you followed the last few sections, you have just about all the information you could possibly need. Now, bring that price up. Remember, it’s your car and you want to get as much value for it as possible. The buyer/insurance agent/loan officer/whoever you’re dealing with on the other side of the table will do their job to bring it down. Use your information as a baseline to know how much your vehicle deserves and don’t go below what you know you can get. From there, talk it up.

    Promote all the extras. Talk about how great of a condition its in. If you’re selling to a person, try to appeal to what they want in a car and highlight those features. If you’re trying to argue an insurance claim, point out ways in which your vehicle is better than others on the market (lower mileage for its year, better condition, fewer accidents prior to the wreck in question). Some cars may have more value than others, but every car has something to offer. Even if it doesn’t run, it could be used for parts or scrap metal.

    Ultimately, as I stated at the beginning of this post, your car is worth whatever you can get someone to pay for it. Some people prefer to get a moderate amount of money up front if they can get it in cash, while others will hold out as long as possible to get every last cent they can. Once you know what your car has going for it and how much those assets can go for on the open market, how high you’re able to go all depends on how good your negotiation skills are.
