Google’s new self-driving minivans will be hitting the road at the end of January 2017 – The Verge, minivans.#Minivans

Google’s new self-driving minivans will be hitting the road at the end of January 2017

Waymo, the self-driving car startup spun-off from Google late last year, will be deploying its fleet of self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans onto public roads for the first time later this month, the company announced at the North American International Auto Show today.

The minivans will be hitting the roads in Mountain View, California and Phoenix, Arizona, where the company’s self-driving Lexus SUVs have already driven thousands of miles over the past few years. Also today, Waymo gave the public its first look at the self-driving Pacificas, which have been under wraps since the deal between Google and Fiat Chrysler was first announced back in May 2016.

“Mom, can you send the minivan to come pick me up from soccer practice today?” #NAIAS2017 pic.twitter.com/reUmaDZqzC

But here’s the thing about these minivans. Waymo says that for the first time, its producing all the technology that enables its cars to completely drive themselves in-house. That means for the first time, the Google spin-off is building all its own cameras, sensors, and mapping technology, rather than purchasing parts off the shelf as it had done in the past.

This allows the company to exert more control over its self-driving hardware, as well as bring the cost down to ridiculously cheap levels. In a speech in Detroit, Waymo CEO John Krafcik said that by building its own LIDAR sensors, for example, the company was shaving 90 percent off its costs. That means sensors that Google purchased for $75,000 back in 2009 now only cost $7,500 for Waymo to build itself.

Waymo CEO John Krafcik

To be sure, the cost of high-end LIDAR sensors have dropped precipitously over the years. Velodyne, a top supplier of LIDAR, retails its sensors for $7,999. But by building its own (or contracting out the manufacturing), Waymo is able to get LIDAR sensors to its exact specifications. For instance, Krafcik said the company developed two new types of LIDAR: short range and long range, allowing its vehicles to see people and objects very close to the car, as well as spot tiny objects far away.

That said, Waymo has no interest in becoming an auto parts supplier like Delphi or 3M. Rather its focus is on forging partnerships with OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) like Chrysler and Honda to purchase fleets of vehicles or retrofit for self-driving capabilities.

Rumor has it that Waymo and Chrysler will eventually launch its own autonomous ride-sharing service to compete with the likes of Uber and Lyft, possibly by utilizing Google’s Waze mapping service. Indeed, during his remarks in Detroit, Krafcik said Waymo was eyeing a number of products, including ride-hailing, logistics, personal transportation, and last-mile solutions.

When it spun off Waymo in early December, Google essentially conceded that it was dropping its plan to build its own car, instead refocusing its efforts on making the hardware and software needed to power self-driving. It may be too soon to say that Google is abandoning its plans to build a fleet of driverless cars without steering wheels and pedals. Previously, Krafcik made it clear that Waymo “is not a car company, there’s been some confusion on that point. We’re not in business of making better cars, we’re in the business of making better drivers.”

About Us

Used minivans

Autopten.com was registered in 2006 and launched in 2007 with the idea of helping small used cars dealers located in NC by publishing a magazine which would promote the 10 cheapest cars they had in stock. Due to the recession in that time, we decided to do it online nationwide. So far, Autopten’s purpose remains, finding and publishing cheap used cars for sale only. If you are a car dealer or private owner selling cars, join us and start publishing free classified ads.

You can find a new ride anywhere. What you can’t find is an auto dealer who is sincere, up front, and friendly. After weeks of shopping, I finally found Craig who set me up with a great SUV at an even greater price! I know where I’m sending all my friends to get their new rides in the future.

Very nice owner. Helpful and friendly.

Really great buying experience. We found the SUV we were looking for at CW Auto King. Craig really went above and beyond in helping us with our purchase. We were coming in from out of town, and he worked with our schedule and helped us get the SUV we had been searching for. I would definitely recommend CW Auto King.

Knew the truck I wanted was sold. didn’t tell me until after I was approved and went to go buy it. After talking to the manager he laughed at me. terrible customer service. strongly advise going to a different dealer. don’t be fooled by the nice trucks.. the are crooks in every sense of the word. go to a different dealer rather then waste time and money

    2013 Minivan/Van Buying Guide

    Top Recommended Minivans/Vans

The minivan rarely gets respect, yet nothing else matches its practical utility when it’s time to move a lot of people or a lot of stuff, and this is something that parents, carpoolers, business owners or yard-sale junkies can all appreciate. The minivan’s sliding rear doors and low step-in height afford easy access for passengers, while its assortment of storage spaces and reconfigurable seating arrangement deftly solve transportation problems you didn’t even know you had. Even if cargo-hauling tops your list of requirements, both minivans and full-size vans have you covered. And from a fuel economy standpoint, minivans generally achieve better gas mileage than most full-size SUVs. The minivan deserves some respect for the expert way it meets such a wide array of challenges.

The Honda Odyssey tops our list of recommended minivans for 2013. We feel it’s the most well-rounded of the people haulers on the market thanks to its smooth, quiet ride, briskly powerful yet fuel-efficient V6, highly versatile interior and bountiful complement of available convenience features. We’re also big fans of the Odyssey’s agile handling. Don’t get us wrong, as this is still a minivan, but this Honda’s recently retuned suspension makes it feel much less like a behemoth around corners. And though the Odyssey can be pricier than its competitors, its user-friendly elements like an easy-to-stow third-row seat and versatile second-row seating (which can be configured to accommodate up to three child seats) make it the minivan we recommend the most.

Moving up to second place this year is the Nissan Quest. With better-quality interior materials than the Odyssey, super-convenient fold-flat second and third rows and Nissan’s excellent continuously variable transmission (CVT), the Quest is a worthy contender in the minivan prize fight. And we should know, since we’ve spent the better part of a year getting to know one in our long-term fleet. Though the Quest only seats seven (compared to the available eight-passenger seating of most of its rivals) and has less cargo space than competitors, it delivers a higher level of driver engagement and stand-out styling. The Nissan Quest is a minivan, yet it also wants to be something more than that.

Even though it’s third, don’t assume the Toyota Sienna comes in last. It’s comfortable, roomy, well-built and has certain high-end features that you won’t find on the Odyssey, like keyless ignition/entry and adaptive cruise control. Plus the Sienna offers all-wheel drive, which is a must-have in less consistently temperate climes. As a whole, the Sienna is an excellent seven- or eight-passenger minivan choice for larger families. Lastly, if a full-size minivan is more than you need in a kidmobile but you’d still like six-passenger capacity and the miracle of sliding doors, take a look at the smaller Mazda 5. a micro minivan that could be just right for you.

3 Best Cheap Minivans for Sale

When it comes to cheap minivans. there are a few models that are both cost effective, and provide great value for a family. Minivans are cars for families that are extra large and need some space. The average minivan price is around $22,000 dollars. Here are some that can fit in many people’s price range.

First is the Mazda 5 minivan. This was a top rated car for the previous year, which is a six passenger minivan. It can’t hold as many passengers as other minivans, but for the price, it is tough to beat. The rear seats can be stowed to increase cargo space. Hyundai Entourage

    2016 Ford C-Max Energi

It has become pretty clear that here in America, we like people to know when we do something good for the environment. It is arguably why the Toyota Prius has done so well, as it can’t be confused for a gas-only vehicle. Ford decided to take that to heart here in the U.S. by releasing the hybrid and plug-in C-Max. The model itself is available in Europe with gasoline- and diesel-only power plants, but not on this side of the drink.

The C-Max has actually be around since 2003 in Europe, but until it got a facelift in 2007, it was known as the Ford Focus C-Max. The name change came when ford decided it wanted to have a “Max” branded line of multi-purpose vehicles. We first saw the Plug-in energy back in 2011 and the North American International Auto Show. and it was finally launched for the 2013 model year as five-seater. Initially there was to be a seven-seater variant here in the U.S. but those plans were eventually canceled before the car’s official launch.

The 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi are practically the same in most aspects, but the Energi has a much larger battery pack than its hybrid brethren – allowing it to achieve electric-only operation and higher fuel economy numbers. Let’s take a deeper look at the 2016 Ford C-Max Energi.

Continue reading to learn more about the Ford C-Max Energi.

It is very maneuverable and easy to park. Toyota Yaris is rated above average for reliability and with proper care, it shouldn’t give you too many problems. Maintenance costs are pretty low too.

    1998-2002 Toyota Corolla

Despite its age, this model is still popular as a low-priced fuel-efficient commuter. It’s a very simple and reliable car that is easy to maintain. 2004-2008 Nissan Maxima

The Maxima is a sporty firm-riding sedan with good handling and a powerful V6. Rare for a V6 car, the Maxima is also available with a stick shift. With the 2004 redesign though, the reliability dropped; automatic transmission problems in the 2004-2006 Maxima are fairly common. For 2007, the CVT became the only transmission option. Overall, it’s a fast sporty car, but repairs are expensive. Opt for the 2007 or newer model. The 2007 Maxima is rated at 19/25 mpg or 12.4/9.4 L/100 km.

    2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu

    2004-2012 Mazda RX8

Mazda RX8 has a rotary engine that readlines at 9000 rpms. The RX8 handles very good, but to get to the power, you have to rev the engine very high. Overall it’s a nice, very unique car, however, it’s not a very good choice to buy used, especially with high mileage. The rotary engine is not very durable and is picky to the maintenance and oil quality. Fuel economy is a big minus too. The 2009 Mazda RX8 manual is rated at 16/22 mpg or 14.7/10.7 L/100 km city/highway.

  • A minivan is a type of van that is designed to transport passengers rather than cargo. Minivans make especially convenient family vehicles, so they ve managed to retain popularity even though their box-like exteriors aren t considered to be especially stylish. And because minivans cater to a specific demographic, they aren t cheap, either. Mid range and high end minivans are usually loaded with advanced safety features and a lot of electronics, since the auto manufacturers design teams know that a lot of parents are willing to splurge to keep their families as safe as possible, and to have the option of entertainment on particularly long trips. Other notable minivan features, such as the seating arrangement, are more conducive to comfortable family travel. Options such as Chrysler s Swivel N Go removable table and rotating seat configuration, inspired by camper vans and other recreational vehicles, make for more comfortable long distance travel than in a traditional passenger vehicle.

    2015 Minivan Buyers Guide

Minivans remain the practical choice for families of all sizes, as they continue to offer unmatched utility in an efficient, easy-to-live-with package. Most minivans offer three rows of adult-sized seating that have been cleverly designed to maximize cargo capacity. They may be boring, but nothing matches their utility.

What s New for Minivans in 2016?

Most families with space needs beyond typical a sedan’s capacity opt for a crossover or SUV. Not the market it once was, a few key players continue to carry the minivan torch into the 2016 model year.

But just because choices are limited doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy one. Ask a parent, coach or really anyone who owns one and you’ll probably hear the same thing: there are times when a van just can’t be beat.

SEE ALSO: Top 10 Reasons to Buy a Minivan

Choices are few in the minivan world today. The staple Dodge Grand Caravan still exists, but 2016 will probably be the last year it s sold before it gets discontinued. The Chrysler Town Country, the Dodge s corporate twin, is a more luxurious offering and is still a popular choice. Honda. Toyota, Kia and Nissan still offer minivans as well, with neither the Odyssey, Sienna, Sedona or Quest receiving major changes this year.

Auto makers are betting that Chinese families will embrace the mini-van, hoping the larger, unsexy sibling of the bestselling SUV will become the next big thing just as Beijing relaxes the one-child policy.

Mini-vans, or multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), were front and center at the Guangzhou auto show, where Volkswagen AG presented a supersized version of its Touran and Guangzhou Automobile Group subsidiary GAC Motor showcased a prototype mini-van. The show ended Sunday.

These seven-seaters currently account for just 10 per cent of passenger car sales in China, but sales are growing at a faster pace than the entire auto market, the world’s largest.

Industry experts say the appetite for bigger cars is strong enough in China, where extended families often live under one roof, to potentially turn it into the largest MPV market after the United States, where auto makers have sold big cars to families for years.

At the end of October, China further relaxed its one-child policy, a move which experts said would not necessarily lead to a sudden increase in the size of the average family.

But Chinese authorities hope it will help boost the population to 1.45 billion by 2030 from 1.37 billion at the end of last year.

“After the roll out of the two-child policy, I believe the market share of 7-seat SUVs and MPVs will further strengthen,” Wu Song, GAC Motor’s general manager, told Reuters.

MPV sales for the first 10 months of the year grew 7.8 per cent, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, outperforming the 1.5 per cent growth in the overall car market.

    FAMILY FRIENDLY

The focus on Chinese families is relatively new for MPV makers which for years targeted companies seeking large, luxurious models for executives or small businesses that need a workhorse to haul goods and staff.

Many households include at least one set of grandparents, as they play a key role in childcare. These extended families, coupled with restrictions in most major cities on owning a second car, give MPVs an advantage over the five-seat sports utility vehicles (SUVs) that currently account for the bulk of passenger car sales growth.

“The cost of owning two vehicles is high. That is why demand for seven-seat vehicles has grown greatly,” said Gustavo Céspedes, executive vice president of General Motor’s joint venture with SAIC Motor and Wuling Motor which makes China’s best selling MPVs.

GM and its partners account for more than half of all MPV sales. The top seller is the Wuling Hongguang, a utilitarian mini van that starts at 42,800 yuan ($8,930), but the more family friendly Baojun 730, which starts at 69,800 yuan ($14,560), became the second most popular MPV just one year after it was launched.

Spurred by the rapid success of the Baojun, rival Geely Automobile Holdings is designing a mini-van for families, a person familiar with the matter said. A company spokesman said it was too early to discuss future products.

GAC Motor also sees opportunity in families. Design director Zhang Fan said GAC started working on a car two years ago to fill the gap between basic mini-vans and high-end models such as Toyota Motor Corp’s Alphard, which starts at 759,000 yuan. “That gap is actually quite lucrative,” he added.

The rising popularity of the lumbering MPV shows that more Chinese consumers are becoming savvy and choosing cars that meet their needs, and not because of the status they confer.

Ma Li, a plastic surgeon in Beijing, bought an MPV because he said its sliding doors were safer for his 10-year-old son.

“I didn’t think at all how my friends would view this car,” Ma added. “The important consideration was the practical use.”

Family Vacation: America s Best-Selling Minivans Duke It Out for Our Big Test Crown

    Share this article in:

Growing up, I had a lot of fun in our family s minivans. Our family s first car was a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan SE that my dad used to shuttle me to early-morning hockey practice. (My little brothers would hide half-eaten bagels in the seats.)

When it wasn t schlepping hockey gear and old bagels around, our family used it for our annual summer vacation from Brooklyn to Bethany Beach, Delaware. Filled with boogie boards, Game Boys, and what felt like everything my mom owned, our forest-green Grand Caravan became everything from an Army helicopter to a karaoke room as my brothers and I entertained ourselves on the journey.

To my 9-year-old self, nothing was cooler than that van and the fun-filled vacations it promised.

For most minivan buyers there’s no driving trait more important than ride and handling.

Sometime between the time our family s second minivan caught fire in 2002 (long story) and the end of the decade, the popularity of the minivan plummeted. The market went from more than 11 models at its peak to just eight or so, depending on who s counting. The meat of the market is covered by the five Big Test competitors you see here: the 2014 Chrysler Town Country S, 2015 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite, 2015 Kia Sedona SXL, 2014 Nissan Quest LE, and the 2015 Toyota Sienna SE.

    Ride Handling

Although going fast can be nice, for most minivan buyers there s no driving trait more important than ride and handling—after all, poor ride and handling characteristics can result in carsick children stuck in the third row. (Ask me how I know.) To test each van s ride and handling abilities, we devised a drive loop in Los Angeles ritzy Palos Verdes area. This diverse loop included stop-and-go suburban traffic, bits of highway speeds, and a rough section of road.

Overall it’s a nice, very unique car, however, it’s not a very good choice to buy used, especially with high mileage. The rotary engine is not very durable and is picky to the maintenance and oil quality. Fuel economy is a big minus too. Minivan/Van Buying Guide

Minivans and vans are highly versatile transport vehicles that can carry either cargo or passengers. With their huge interior volume, they are capable of accommodating up to three or even four rows of passenger seating. Most full-size vans are also capable of carrying a weight load on par with that of a full-size pickup truck.

    About Minivans and Vans

The name ‘van’ is a shortened version of ‘caravan,’ which means covered vehicle. Cargo and passenger vans have existed since the early days of the automobile. With their strong engines and boxy cargo compartments, vans were initially intended as commercial vehicles for transporting goods and making deliveries.

Vans became more popular with everyday drivers during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The VW Bus was one model that helped make the compact van widely popular with drivers. As compact vans enjoyed increasing popularity in the US during the 1960s, many other automakers were inspired by the success of the VW Bus. Several U.S. automakers entered the compact van market, releasing vehicles like the Dodge A100. One of the first commercially produced full-sized vans released by the U.S. auto industry was the Ford Econoline, which came out in 1961.

While there have been many different models and sizes of vans available over the decades, minivans really only came into being in 1983. In 1984, Chrysler introduced both the Dodge Caravan and the Plymouth Voyager. Like full size vans, minivans employ a two-box design with one compartment for the engine and another for passengers and cargos; however minivans are typically shorter in height and length than full-size versions.

Minivans continued to flood into the North American market throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. Models such as the Chevrolet Astro, the Ford Aerostar, and the GMC Safari were introduced by American automakers. Japanese automaker Mazda released the popular MPV in 1989, and Toyota released the highly successful Previa the following year.

By 2000, minivans were a fixture on the automotive landscape. Built low to the ground on a passenger car chassis, they were easy to drive and took up a minimal amount of space, despite their ample interiors. While four-cylinder engines initially powered most minivans, today many models are equipped with V-6s. Full-size vans are also still popular today, although the market share has dwindled some as concerns over fuel economy have driven sales of the minivan instead.

    Minivan and Van Variations

Most minivans have front-wheel drive. Full-size vans, on the other hand, tend to be rear-wheel drive. However, there are some models available that have four-wheel drive.

Minivans and vans are also available in different configurations. Some vans are designed to haul cargo while others are designated as passenger vans. However, one of the most attractive aspects of minivans and vans in any category is their usefulness. Many vans and minivans can be used for either passengers or cargo.

Popular Minivan and Van Car Brands

Minivans dominate a significant portion of the current van market. Some of the more popular models of minivans and vans currently being sold include the Kia Sedona, the Honda Odyssey, the Nissan Quest, and the Dodge Caravan. Today the Dodge Sprinter and the Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana largely dominate the market for full-size vans.

    Who Drives Minivans and Vans?

Minivans and vans provide convenience, flexibility and ample room for passengers or cargo. Because they are compact and easy to drive, such vans are ideal for busy parents on the go. Their sliding side doors make them perfect for dropping off and picking up kids from school or the soccer field. Minivans have ample cargo room, which also makes them great for picking up several bags of groceries.

With their added power and immense capacity for transporting passengers or cargo, full-size vans are less practical for everyday use. Vans like the Chevrolet Express and the Ford E-Series are better suited for transporting goods or people than they are for a daily commute to work or a trip to the store. However, vans of this type are perfect for anyone who works in the transportation industry. The interior space of the biggest full-size vans on the market can be configured to accommodate up to four rows of passenger seating. They also have enough cargo space to carry 270 cubic feet of cargo or more.

The Best Family Cars 2015: Not Just Minivans

If your idea of a family car is an old wagon with a passel of kids tucked in the back, or perhaps a grimy minivan overflowing with soccer gear, you may be in for a surprise when you see the mix of models that topped the charts in the U.S. News and World Report Best Cars for Families annual awards.

The magazine took a close look at 259 different vehicles in 19 different categories looking to highlight vehicles that make family life easier, explains Jamie Page Deaton, who oversees new car rankings. These are sedans, SUVs and minivans that have good space and good safety, but also offer lots of family-friendly features. (See list below.)

Those include such niceties as rear-seat video entertainment systems, WiFi hot spots, and back-up cameras, plus safety and security systems, such as GM’s OnStar, that can help parents keep track of teen drivers.

General Motors led in more of those categories — four, in all — than any other manufacturer. But Honda had the distinction of capturing a win for best family minivan for the fifth year in a row: The Honda Odyssey locked down its lead in that segment ever since the Family Cars awards were first announced.

While many parents think of minivans and SUVs as the classic family car, the editors also looked at conventional sedans and even some small hatchbacks, such as the Volkswagen Golf, aiming to satisfy every family lifestyle and every family budget.

Family cars have changed a lot since the first time U.S. News tried to compare them, noted Managing Editor Page Deaton. Back then, there were far fewer amenities — especially high-tech connectivity features — and far less advanced safety systems. New safety tech like forward collision warning, she said, can watch out when you’re distracted, yelling at the kids in the back seat.

    Top 2 Best Used Minivans

    0 14,166 views Dec 1, 2009

Once it was the king of the road, so to speak, at least in terms of family versatility and popularity. But the minivan. which debuted in the mid-1980s with the introduction of the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, is definitely on the decline, according to the editors of Consumer Guide. Although its been replaced by more popular crossover vehicles, the minivan still serves the needs of many families across America.

If the prices of brand-new minivans is not in your reach and youre looking to buy used, you may well ask what the best used minivans are. Consumer Reports, in their Best of the Best lists of various vehicle segments, lists only two: Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey. Their research includes vehicles from 1999 through 2008 and includes only vehicles with multiple years of above-average reliability.

First introduced in 1998, the Toyota Sienna is a good choice, new or used, according to Edmunds.com. Posting good crash-test scores, Sienna has exceptional reputation for both long-term overall dependability and overall quality, Edmunds editors say. A look at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals Toyota Sienna scored 5 stars for driver frontal and 4 stars for passenger frontal and 5 stars for driver and passenger in side-impact tests from 2000-2003. In 2004, Sienna earned a 5-star rating in frontal and side impact testing. From 2005-2009, Odysseys NHTSA ratings were 4-star driver frontal, 5-star passenger frontal and 5 stars in side-impact testing.

Edmunds.com lists used Toyota Sienna dealer retail prices ranging from $4,785 (1998) to $28,743 (2008). For 2009, Toyota Sienna base prices range from $24,540 to $37,865. Offering 7- or 8-passenger seating and a 230-hp 3.3-liter V-6 engine, the 2009 model is well-equipped and benefits from Toyotas reputation for strong resale value. EPA fuel economy range for 2009 models is 17 to 23 mpg. Toyota Sienna is the only 2009 minivan available with AWD for better traction control on slick roads.

While Honda Odyssey has been around since the first-generation (1995-1998), Consumer Reports lists the second-generation (2001-2006) as the best used minivans. From 1999 to 2004, Odyssey was available in front-wheel drive (FWD) only in LX and EX (EX featured the dual power-sliding doors). Power came from a 210-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine (240 horsepower from 2000 to 2004). Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard, 2nd-row seats folded or could be easily removed, and 3rd-row seats folded flat into the floor.

Edmunds lists used Odyssey dealer retail prices ranging from $2,913 (1995) to $33,341 (2008). For 2009, Honda Odyssey dealer retail prices range from $24,214 to $37,355. Consumer Guide lists 2009 prices ranging from $26,255 to $41,605, and EPA fuel economy at 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway.

    What To Look For

Using these two minivans as a starting point, compare other available minivans out there. Consider their NHTSA crash-test ratings, EPA fuel economy, costs to buy, insure and maintain. Also check the vehicles maintenance records to ensure its been serviced properly.

Are there other really great used minivans? You bet. Consumers have their favorites, as indicated by blog postings all over the Web. But you have to start somewhere, so use these two that Consumer Reports list as the best and go from there.

Family Vacation: America s Best-Selling Minivans Duke It Out for Our Big Test Crown

A minivan is a type of vehicle body style that is defined as having a large 1- or 2-box design similar to that of a commercial or full-sized van. Minivans are typically between five and six feet tall and feature two or three rows of seating. The body style is designed to maximize storage capacity and/or passenger room. Popular 2008 model year minivans include the Chrysler Town Country, Toyota Sienna and Nissan Quest. In other parts of the world, a minivan may be referred to as a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

    Distinguishing Characteristics of the Minivan

While similar to several different vehicle body styles, the minivan is easily distinguishable through a variety of features. In comparison to a full-sized van, minivans are shorter in both height and length. Traditional vans are also traditionally designed so that the driver’s seat is situated directly above the front wheel axle, whereas a minivan driver’s seat is situated behind the front wheel axle.

In comparison to car-based vehicles such as the sedan and station wagon, minivans feature unique characteristics such as higher seats with a higher H-point and additional rear cabin space. Minivans can also be distinguished from other light truck vehicles (such as an SUV) through a uni-body construction and front-wheel drive configuration. Some minivans feature a sliding rear side door as opposed to traditional hinged doors. This feature is unique to the minivan body style.

    Types of Minivan Body Styles

In the United States, virtually all minivans can be categorized as a large minivan. This classification typically refers to a minivan with an approximate length of 15 feet. However, in Europe and Asia, other types of minivan body styles are available. The two most popular of these include:

    • Compact MPVs: minivans with a body length between 13.75 and 15 feet
    • Mini MPVs: minivans less than 13.5 feet in length

Popularity of the Minivan in America

Minivans were first introduced in 1984 by Chrysler and Toyota. The body style was (and continues to be) geared towards suburban families that require considerable rear storage capacity. The minivan was seen by automakers as a viable alternative to larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles and the smaller, less roomy station wagon. Because of these advantages, the minivan remained considerably popular until the rise of the SUV in the 1990s.

Just as the minivan largely replaced the station wagon, the SUV has diminished the appeal of the minivan. This is in large part due to the SUV’s similar storage capacity and more rugged image. The introduction of the crossover SUV in the early 2000s blended the styling of SUVs and minivans. This new body style served to further reduce the popularity of minivans in the United States.

    Best Used Minivans

When trying to choose the best used minivans. it is important to remember why people buy minivans in the first place. First and foremost, minivans are typically purchased to carry family members from Point A to Point B. Because good used minivans are charged with hauling the most precious of cargo, the people their owners love the most, the best used minivans must be safe vehicles before they re anything else. As an extension of safety, and because family finances are often already strained without adding vehicle repairs to the pile of bills, the best used vans must also be dependable, able to get you and your passengers to your destination without breaking down. Minivans are also bought to carry stuff. Lots of stuff. That means they need to offer plenty of interior space, and the ability to configure that space to best accommodate that cargo.

In order to create this Best Used Minivans guide, we took a look at all of the minivans built during the past 10 years, examining their crash test ratings, their reliability ratings, their cargo volume measurements, and their seating configurations. Based on this research, our picks for the best used vans on sale today are listed below, in alphabetical order by make.

    1) 2010-2014 Chrysler Town Country

In 2010, when this minivan was new, it earned 5-star crash-test ratings from the NHTSA, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it top ratings for frontal- and side-impact collision protection. Models built after March of 2010 also received good ratings for protecting against injury in a rear-impact collision. Prior to that, the Town Country rated Marginal.

    2) 2010-2014 Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan is basically the same vehicle as the 2010 Chrysler Town Country, and the same criticisms leveled at the Chrysler apply to the Dodge. The difference here is that a used Grand Caravan is probably equipped with fewer equipment and technology upgrades than a used Town Country, which infers there are fewer things that could go wrong with it in the future. If nothing else, used Grand Caravan buyers can rest easy knowing their minivan is crashworthy, especially those built after March of 2010. Prior to that date, the Grand Caravan s front seats did a Marginal job of protecting occupants against injury in a rear-impact collision, according to the IIHS. In frontal- and side-impact tests, the IIHS gave the Grand Caravan its highest rating of Good, and for those same assessments the NHTSA awarded the Grand Caravan 5-star ratings.

    3) 2006-2007 Ford Freestar

When the Ford Freestar was new, it wasn t very competitive. A re-hashed Ford Windstar with a new face and name, the Freestar simply couldn t match the best minivans in the class on a number of fronts. Today, that still holds true amongst used models, but the 2006 and 2007 versions of the Freestar are reasonably safe and reasonably dependable, and they re reasonably cheap to buy.

    4) 2011-2014 Honda Odyssey

    5) 2006-2014 Kia Sedona

The second generation of the Kia Sedona minivan was sold from 2006 until 2014, and it became known for offering a good value as an alternative to higher priced, more established, and more luxurious competition.

    6) 2012-2014 Mazda Mazda5

These model years represent the third generation of Mazda s Mazda5, which isn t exactly what comes to mind when most people think of a minivan. However, for smaller families or for parents who value a more engaging driving experience, a used Mazda5 might be worth consideration.

    Enlarge Photo
