Used SUVs with the Best Gas Mileage

Finding the best gas mileage for used SUVs is not as troublesome as it once was. The younger used vehicles all come with better gas mileage and are not the gas guzzlers that they once were. Because of the environmental effects and the ever-increasing cost of gasoline, SUV fuel efficiency has undergone a lot of improvements.

The Best

The SUVs that get over 20 mpg are some of the best. It is hard to find any with better mileage unless you go to hybrid vehicles, which can achieve about 26 mpg. Some of the best models include the Toyota Highlander, Mazda Tribute, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Saturn Vue and the Toyota RAV4. One of the best recommendations, as it is also considered a best buy, is the Subaru Forester. Expect to get about 25mpg when on the highway.

Some of the worst are those that will just barely make 14 mpg, namely the Land Rovers and Mercedes-Benz G500. It is also a good idea to avoid Hummers. These have very bad gas mileage because they contain large, powerful engines that can generate more than 300hp and will be loaded with features that bump up the weight and energy usage. Others to avoid include the Lincoln Navigator, Ford Expedition, Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Armada, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the Volkswagen Tourareg.

Gas mileage and fuel economy information can be found easily online. Each vehicle should also have a fuel economy sticker that shows the gas mileage. Be aware that these numbers were calculated in a lab and do not show the real world gas mileage in each situation. However, this can be a great way to determine which ones will have lower fuel economy and which ones higher. It is also important to take into account the starting price of the SUV, whether it s 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive and what you re going to be doing with it.

SUVS have some of the worst gas mileage because they are so heavy. Try to lighten the vehicle if possible, particularly of items that you rarely use. Also try not to idle the engine, as this burns fuel. Instead, turn the car off and turn it on again when sitting in traffic. Make sure the tires are at the correct level and check this about once a month. Also make sure the engine has good lubrication and use a brand that is recommended for your SUV. The way you drive may be causing the gas mileage to be worse. Make some changes to get better gas mileage.

It is possible to determine what this gas mileage means in terms of dollars. Let s say a gallon of gas costs $3. Normally, in a year you would drive 12,000 miles. One SUV will have a gas mileage of 30 mpg. Therefore 400 gallons of gas would be needed for a year which turns into $1,400. However, another SUV may only get 15mpg, so 800 gallons of gas is needed. This in turn will cost $7,000. The mileage can really affect the amount of money spent on gas each year and the used SUVS with the best gas mileage will have lower fuel costs.

The Best 4 Wheel Drive Cars With Good Gas Mileage

Pontiac Vibe

Mechanically identical to the Toyota Voltz, the Vibe is Pontiac’s all-purpose station wagon/crossover. The AWD (All Wheel Drive) Vibe has been produced by GM since 2003 and was at one point the company’s most efficient U.S. market vehicle. The 31-mpg Volt has been a hot seller for GM since its introduction and continues to share honors with the smallest of GM’s line as a low-emission’s hero. The Vibe’s AWD system is designed more for slippery driveways and winter roads than for mud-pits and rock-crawling.

Toyota Venza

The Venza is Toyota’s newest trump card in the versatility wars. This mid-sized crossover wagon has rakish good looks, sporty handling, seating for seven and gets an EPA estimated 28 mpg highway. This is no mean feat, considering the AWD Vibe can only be had with Toyota’s excellent 3.5L V6, which is essentially the same 268-horsepower beast found in the company’s Highlander pickup.

The Venza’s AWD system isn’t quite as sport-tuned as a Mitsubishi evolution’s, but isn’t far off of Subaru’s rally-car WRX Sti’s in terms of programming and power transfer.

Subaru Imprezza

Speaking of the WRX, the Impreza on which it is based certainly deserves to be mentioned. Subaru has been mass-producing AWD road cars since the Carter administration and knows a thing or two about combining economy and practicality. The Impreza’s 170-horsepower 2.5L flat-four is a legend in its own time, gets 28 mpg and is the engine used in the company’s 500-horsepower rally cars.

Benefiting from its rally-racing roots, Subaru’s AWD system is one of the best on the planet. Just as capable on wet gravel as on ice or snow, the Impreza is a jack of all trades and master of more than a few.

Audi A3 Quattro

Another rally legend, Audi’s Quattro AWD system is easily a match for Subaru’s. The A3 is a sport wagon like the Venza, but has a chassis more suited for high-speed touring than for fetching milk. The A3 gets 28 mpg highway and 20 mpg city. While these numbers are only middle-of-the road, rest assured that A3’s 268-horsepower 2.0L turbo four will more than make up for any feelings of inadequacy.

2) 2015 Audi Q5 3.0 TDI

The 2015 Audi Q5 3.0 TDI is in the same class as the BMW X3, fighting for the attention of luxury shoppers seeking a small SUV. The biggest difference between the two vehicles is the Audi Q5’s turbodiesel drivetrain, which offers up considerably more torque than the engine under the hood of its rival. How much more? The 3.0-liter, six-cylinder unit pushes out 428 lb-ft of twist, along with the same 240 horses delivered by the BMW’s smaller motor. Despite this differential, the four-wheel drive Audi Q5 shines with a fuel mileage rating of 24 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg during highway cruising (and 27 mpg combined), and it features an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an engine start/stop system to reduce idling.

Subaru Impreza vs Subaru Legacy

Despite all of the wagon-shaped vehicles Subaru makes, it does manage to turn out sedans, as well. The Japanese company offers the Impreza and its bigger, more powerful brother, the Legacy . Both four-doors are ready for bad weather thanks to their standard Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive. Which one should a buyer be prepared to buy, though?

See a side-by-side comparison of the Impreza Legacy

The gap in usable space between the two Subarus isn’t dramatic — the Impreza seats five in its 96.9 cubic feet of passenger volume. The five-capacity Legacy does have an edge, though, measuring 119.6 cubic feet. The difference is more pronounced in the trunk, where the Impreza’s 12 cubic feet falls behind the Legacy’s 15 cubic feet.

The Impreza comes with a 2-liter four-cylinder engine. Its 148 horsepower puts it slightly behind the 175 horsepower from the Legacy’s base 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Opting for the larger sedan’s 3.6-liter 256-horsepower six-cylinder engine puts it out of reach of the Impreza’s engine.

Gears in the Impreza can be changed with a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Power in the Legacy is processed through a CVT with a six-speed manual mode. Equipping the four-door Impreza with the CVT enables fuel economy of 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. Gas mileage for the Legacy goes as high as 26 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.

The smaller Subaru comes with power windows and mirrors, air conditioning and a four-speaker audio system, among other features. Options include voice-activated GPS and an All-Weather Package. Electronic cruise control, cloth upholstery and silver metallic interior trim are standard kit for the Legacy. It can be dressed up with options such as a remote engine starter and the EyeSight driver assistance system.

Imprezas currently start at $17,895. The entry price of a Legacy is marginally higher at $21,695.

The Impreza is the better all-around Subaru. Similar space and power, better fuel economy and a lower price of entry make it the smarter choice.

An SUV no longer means gas guzzler. Many newer SUVs combine utility with car-like handling and good fuel economy.  We picked nine non-hybrid used SUV models that are widely available and good on gas. We only looked at vehicles with a combined MPG rating of 22 or better, based on the 2010 model year. Vote for one more choice.

Hyundai Tucson 2010 and newer

Hyundai Tucson was redesigned for 2010. It s the smallest SUV in this group, but it offers the best EPA-estimated combined fuel economy rating of 26 MPG. The Tucson handles well but rides firmly. It has a nicely-finished interior and plenty of available features. On the downside, the ride is noisy, the interior and cargo space are limited and rear visibility is compromised in the corners.  Reliability is about average. The 2010 FWD 4-cylinder model gets 23/31 MPG. The AWD 2010 4-cylinder Tucson is rated at 22/30 MPG  city/highway.

Chevrolet Equinox / GMC Terrain (4-cylinder) 2010 and newer

With the 2010 redesign, the Equinox got a direct-injected 4-cylinder engine that offers best in class highway fuel economy. The interior quality and comfort are also among the best. The Equinox handles well and rides comfortably. The only complaint is the wide turning radius. The 182-hp 2.4L four-banger is available with front- or all-wheel drive. The Equinox long-term reliability is about average. An extended warranty is worth considering.  The 2010 FWD 4-cylinder Equinox automatic gets 22/32 MPG.  The AWD 4-cylinder model is rated at 20/29 MPG . GMC Terrain is a mechanical twin of the Chevrolet Equinox and has the same fuel economy ratings.

Subaru Outback (4-cylinder) 2008 and newer

Subaru Outback comes with a standard all-wheel drive system and a boxer engine that provides a lower center of gravity. The 2005-2009 Outback was more of a wagon with a tight rear seat. The 2010 and newer Outback is taller and roomier. There were some engine issues in early models, but 2008 and newer Outback is pretty reliable. The Subaru all-wheel drive system is one of the best out there. The 2010 4-cylinder Outback with a continuously variable transmission is rated at 22/29 MPG  city/highway.

Toyota RAV4 (4-cylinder)

Toyota s smallest SUV is agile and fun to drive. The RAV4 rides comfortably and has a  peppy 4-cylinder engine. It is available as a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The RAV4 offers a well-finished practical interior and refined powertrain. On the downside, the rear door opens toward the curb. Toyota RAV4 is very reliable and holds its value well. Maintenance costs are fairly low. The 2010 AWD 4-cylinder Toyota RAV4 is rated at 21/27 MPG .

Nissan Rogue 2009 and newer

Introduced for 2008, the Rogue is a car-based crossover available with FWD or AWD. The Rogue comes with a 170-hp  2.5L 4-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Rogue handles nicely and has a fairly quiet compliant ride. The interior is plain but comfortable. The rear visibility is the only downside. The reliability is better than average, although the 2008 model should probably be avoided.  The 2010 AWD Nissan Rogue gets 21/26 MPG city/highway.

Honda CR-V

The CR-V remains one of the most popular compact SUVs. It has been redesigned for 2007. The CR-V has a very good 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and a versatile roomy interior. The handling is secure but the ride is on the firm side. The CR-V offers many clever features, including a conversation mirror, folding tray between the front seats and an optional dual-deck cargo shelf. You can t go wrong with this vehicle if you are looking for a compact SUV. The CR-V is very reliable. The 2010 AWD automatic model is rated at 21/27 MPG.

Mazda CX-7 (non-turbo) 2010 and newer

Mazda CX-7 a sporty compact crossover. It s roomy and fun to drive. It was introduced for 2007, however the original 2.3L-turbo engine had problems and should be avoided. The 2008 and newer Highlander is the most spacious in this group. Toyota Highlander is very reliable and easy to maintain. The 2010 FWD 2.7L 4-cylinder automatic Highlander is rated at 20/27 MPG .

It comes with a 2.5L or 2.5L-turbo 4-cylinder engine and an automatic or manual transmission. All-wheel drive is standard. The Forester upright styling makes for good visibility and spacious cargo compartment. The horizontally opposed engine provides a low center of gravity. Subaru all-wheel drive system is excellent. The interior is simple but practical. The 2009 and newer Forester is reliable and easy to maintain. The EPA rates the 2010 2.5L Forester with an automatic transmission at 20/26 MPG.

Buying a high mileage, ex-lease car

26 June 2006

There are a lot of ex-lease cars on eBay that are 3 years old, have 1 previous owner, full service history and are in nice condition. This type of car will be heavily discounted due to high mileage but you can get some genuine bargains. Especially if you are not going to clock up the miles over the next few years.

This guide can help you get that car for the right price and make sure you don’t leave with a sour taste in the mouth. Remember that when you buy anything on eBay you agree to a contract and MUST commit to the purchase. This is especially important when you’re talking about spending 1000’s of pounds on something you havn’t even seen or even driven yet!

Some of this may be stating the obvious for more experienced car buyers but I wanted to cover everything on one page.

1. Make sure everything is as described in the advert, inside and out. If anything does not match you can effectively walk away from the deal because the item is not as described. If you still want to go ahead with the deal, try to get money off for additional marks or damage.

2. Make sure you get everything that was included in the description and any pictures. This includes mats, in-car phone kits (including the phone) UNLESS it is specified on the ad that the item is NOT included. Traders that sell a lot of cars will hoard stuff like mats in order to save them money when buying a bare car at auction.

3. If the ad does not mention keys you can assume you will only get one. Take this into consideration as a replacement key can be expensive, especially for a modern car (e.g. VW / Audi, the key can cost 180.00 from a dealer but you can get blanks on eBay for about 25.00)

4. Generally you can expect an ex-lease car to be a decent buy as the leasing compay will have paid all the servicing for the 3 year period but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t test drive the car and make sure you CHECK EVERYTHING WORKS before you leave. Some traders may be impatient at this point but who cares, it’s your money!

5. If the trader has listed the service history, make sure there are no surprises on the horizon e.g. the cambelt on any car needs replacing every 60-70,000 miles. So if you are buying a car with a mileage of 115,000 bear in mind it may need a new belt in 5000 miles. Personally I would stick to the 100k mark and avoid anything above 130k. Try to buy a car that has just been serviced with good tyres, long MOT, the usual really. The lower the cost for you in the next 6-12 months the better.

6. Expect the road tax to be expired as most lease companies surrender the disc before sending the car to auction and a trader will have the red plates that allow them to drive untaxed vehicles on the public highway. You will need to obtain road tax on the day you pick up the car or aquire a set of dealer plates. Remember that most Post Offices close at midday on Saturdays!

7. Don’t get carried away by the auction and bid above the book value. The lower the price you pay the less it will depreciate, especially if you are not going to clock up the miles. There are literally 1000’s of cars out there every week so take your time and don’t worry if some other fool wastes their money! Always check the TRADE price of the car and maybe use the Notes facility on your watch list to keep track of the maximum bid you should be making. Remember that dealers buy a lot of the ex-lease cars from other traders so expect to pay the TRADE value (or maybe a bit more, use your own judgement)

CAR BUYER’S SCHOOL

I can only afford to spend $2,000 for a car. I know that anything I buy in that price range is going to have lots of miles on it. How important is the mileage on a used car?

Mileage is probably the single most important factor in determining the value of a used car. The “normal” mileage for a used car is about 12,000 miles for each year of its life. In other words, a five-year-old vehicle should have about 60,000 miles on its odometer. (In locales where people do a lot of driving, such as Southern California, this mileage allotment is increased to 15,000 miles per year.)

So when looking for a used car, try to find a vehicle with the least amount of miles you can. If the mileage on the car is less than its “normal” allotment, then that vehicle may be a good buy.

Caution: “Odometer tampering” is a growing problem nationwide. If you find a used car with very low miles on its odometer for its age, you have reason to be suspicious. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to verify if the mileage on a vehicle’s odometer is accurate or not.

Tip: To insure that you’re not getting an out-and-out “lemon”, have a mechanic inspect the vehicle before you buy it. He’ll be able to tell you what problems the vehicle has now or is likely to have in the near future.

Top 10 cars for under $5,000 with good gas mileage

TA Editor Jun 25th, 2012 Comments Off

If you need a car under $5,000 that is cheap on gas, check our top 10 list. We have picked 10 models  that are available on the used car market at around $5,000, have relatively good fuel economy and more or less dependable; as much as you can expect from a $5,000 car.

Toyota Corolla 1993-2001

You won t miss with this car. The Corolla is a simple and reliable small sedan. It s not too fancy inside, but if you need something to drive around without paying too much for gas, this is your choice. The EPA rates 2001 Toyota Corolla with an automatic transmission at 26/36 MPG or approximately 344 miles on one 13.2-gallon tank. How can you beat that? The estimated annual fuel cost: $1,900. Look for a 4-speed automatic model, as the 3-speed auto Corolla is rated poorly for highway MPG.

Honda Civic 1996-2001

Another obvious top choice, the Civic is a comfortable small car. Redesigned for 2001, Honda Civic offers sporty handling and firm ride. The Civic was available as a two or four-door sedan. The 2000 Civic with a 1.6-liter engine and an automatic transmission is rated at 24/32 MPG ; with the annual fuel cost estimated at $2,100.

Chevrolet Prizm 1998-2002

If we included the Corolla, why not Chevy Prizm? It is the same Corolla with the Chevrolet bowtie. You won t find too many of them, but if you come across one, why not give the Prizm a chance? There was another Prizm under the name Geo, which is also re-badged Toyota Corolla. The 2001 4-speed automatic  Chevy Prizm is rated just like the Corolla, at 26/36 MPG. As with the Corolla, Look for a 4-speed automatic model, as the 3-speed automatic Prizm is only rated at 25/30 MPG.

Mazda Protege 1997-2003

The Protege is a simple small car with a comfortable interior and firm ride. The Protege is easy to maintain. Consumer Reports rates Mazda Protege as Good Bet . The 2001 Mazda Protege with a 1.6L engine and an automatic transmission is rated at 23/30 MPG ; with the annual fuel cost estimated at $2,150.

4-cylinder Honda Accord 1995-2002

Honda Accord is a popular mid-size car available as a two- or four-door sedan. We have included the Accord in our list because it is dependable and the 4-cylinder Accord has good fuel economy: the 2001 Accord automatic is rated at 20/28 MPG with the estimated annual fuel cost at  $2,450. In addition, it s a very comfortable car to drive.

Mitsubishi Lancer 2002-2005

Mitsubishi Lancer is another possible pick at around $5,000. The Lancer is nothing fancy, but a simple practical small car.  The 2002 Lancer with a 120-hp 2.0L engine and an automatic transmission  is rated at 21/27 MPG or roughly $2,450 a year in fuel costs with average driving.

4-cylinder Toyota Camry 1995-2002

Why did we include another mid-size sedan in the top 10 list that should be dominated by small cars? The 2000 4-cylinder Camry with an automatic transmission is rated at 20/28 MPG with the annual fuel cost estimated at $2,450. If you compare these numbers to 20/29 MPG rating of the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, it makes more sense to drive more comfortable and reliable Camry. Even though the Camry is more expensive, you can find quite a few of them priced at close to $5,000.

Saturn S-series 1997-2003

Looking for an American car? Although it s rated not better than Average for reliability, we have  included Saturn S-series for its fuel economy and positive owner reviews. The 2001 Saturn SL with an automatic transmission is rated at 24/34 MPG with the annual fuel cost estimated at $2,100.

Hyundai Elantra 2000-2005

Hyundai Elantra was redesigned for 2001. Available as a sedan or hatchback, the Elantra offers 132-hp 2.0L engine with a five-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.  The reliability is not better than average. The EPA rates the 2004 Elantra with a 4-speed automatic transmission at 21/29 MPG or approximately $2,350 a year in fuel costs. The Elantra can travel estimated 313 miles on one 14.5-galon tank.

Chevrolet Cobalt 2005-2008

The Cobalt came as a replacement for the outdated Cavalier for 2005. The Cobalt has its shortcomings and the reliability is not better than average, but it you know what you buy, it s not a bad car for this price. The Cobalt is available as a 4-door sedan or sporty-looking 2-door coupe.  The 2005 Cobalt with an automatic transmission is rated at 21/29 MPG or around $2,350 for fuel per year.

The handling is secure but the ride is on the firm side. The CR-V offers many clever features, including a conversation mirror, folding tray between the front seats and an optional dual-deck cargo shelf. You can t go wrong with this vehicle if you are looking for a compact SUV. The 2008 and newer Highlander is the most spacious in this group. Toyota Highlander is very reliable and easy to maintain. The 2010 FWD 2.7L 4-cylinder automatic Highlander is rated at 20/27 MPG .

Subaru Forester (non-turbo) 2009 and newer

Redesigned for 2009, Subaru Forester is a very practical small SUV with a balanced handling and comfortable ride.

The biggest difference between the two vehicles is the Audi Q5’s turbodiesel drivetrain, which offers up considerably more torque than the engine under the hood of its rival. How much more? Despite this differential, the four-wheel drive Audi Q5 shines with a fuel mileage rating of 24 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg during highway cruising (and 27 mpg combined), and it features an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an engine start/stop system to reduce idling.

High Mileage

If you have high miles on your vehicle, you may be eligible for a reduction on your taxes according to the High Mileage Chart published by the South Carolina Department of Revenue. You can download an odometer statement from this website. You will need to complete this statement and e-mail, fax, mail, or bring it to the Auditor s Office to find out if you are eligible.

Other Appeals Accepted

If there is a significant difference in the appealed value you submit and the value we billed, we may request additional information in order to adjust your bill. We are required by law to use the vehicle values provided by the South Carolina Department of Revenue. The original bill you receive is based on those value provided. If you appeal your vehicle value this year, we will not automatically reduce your value next year based on that appeal. We will continue to use the values provided by the South Carolina Department of Revenue. As a result, you will need to file an appeal each year.

Any appeals you make to reduce the value of your vehicle must be made on or before the tax due date on your bill. You can appeal in person, by e-mail, fax, or mail. After the due date, you lose your right to appeal. If you choose to mail in your appeal, you must send it to the Auditor s Office at P.O. Box 25 York, SC 29745. The return envelope enclosed with your tax bill is addressed to the York County Treasurer. If you mail your appeal to that address, we may not receive it and you may incur penalties from the Department of Motor Vehicles for late registration as a result.
