Where can you work as a Medical Biller and Coder? 5 , 6

Working in a dynamic and fast paced environment, hospitals code and bill a large number of insurance submissions. As a result, medical billers and coders work with a wide range of patient services and medical conditions.

Insurance Companies

These medical billers and coders receive and verify medical submissions from health care providers before processing those submissions for payment. There can be many divisions working in a traditional office environment.

Doctor s Offices

Many individual physicians or independent medical practices specialize in a single area of medicine. They usually have small teams that code and bill procedures for payment from insurance companies, and often work on tasks to help the office run smoothly.

Medical Clinics

Many medical clinics treat a wide variety of patients and medical conditions. They may see many patients each day. As a result, you could become familiar with billing and coding for multiple areas of medicine.

Dental Offices

Many dental practices offer a small office staff and the ability to specialize in one area of medical billing and coding. These offices are a great choice if you want to work in a smaller team environment where you can focus your skills on a single medical specialty.

3rd Party Billing Services

Contracted by a variety of medical facilities, third party billing companies use medical billers and coders to process all of their incoming accounts. Environments can vary from small office teams to large corporate divisions.

5. Carrington College does not guarantee employment, nor employment within specific locations, facilities or salary ranges.

6. Individuals seeking to enter this career field may be subject to screenings such as, but not limited to, criminal background checks and drug/alcohol testing prior to externship, to attain occupational licensure/certification or employment, and throughout their careers.

Online Medical Degree Programs #online #medical #degrees, #medical #degree

Medical Degrees

Today, degrees for various health care and medical careers are available online. However, certain careers require successful completion of traditional campus-based medical education: for example, in the U.S. you cannot become a physician by enrolling in online medical degree programs. Some coursework may be available online, but entire programs are not. Other careers in medicine and health care do have an online educational path.

Online medical/health care programs online

The list of online medical/health care programs is a long one. Online programs include diplomas and certificates as well as associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Online programs are available for any of the following health care careers:

  • Medical assistant
  • Medical billing, coding and transcription assistant
  • Dental assistant
  • Medical technician and technologist
  • Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic
  • Health care manager or health services administrator
  • Dental hygienist
  • Massage therapist
  • Respiratory therapist
  • Occupational or physical therapist
  • Nurse
  • Health information technologist
  • Nutritionist
  • Public health administrator
  • Physician Assistant

Many health care support programs are available entirely online. Other health care programs, particularly for health care practitioners, offer most of the coursework online but also require an on-site clinical experience component. These programs are referred to as hybrid programs.

Accredited online degree programs usually fulfill the same licensing and certification requirements as accredited campus-based degree programs. Pre-requisites for any accredited medical degree program are dictated by the individual program and school, whether they are online or campus-based.

Continuing education online

For many health care professionals including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, EMTs/paramedics, occupational and physical therapists, physician assistants and radiologic technologists, continuing education is mandatory in order to remain licensed or certified. Online continuing education has become increasingly popular because it is more convenient and less time-consuming. The type and amount of continuing education for health care professionals is generally mandated by individual states and varies widely. For example, some states require nurses to take 30 hours of continuing education every two years while others only require three hours every two years. Some states mandate the subject matter of continuing education while other states only have a general requirement for a certain number of hours.

Careers after the medical degree

A number of career opportunities may be available for those with a medical degree including:

  • Medical and biomedical research
  • Law
  • Journalism or medical writer
  • Pharmaceutical representative
  • Consultant
  • Health care CEO
  • Educator
  • Public speaker or TV/Radio personality
  • Expert witness
  • Worker’s compensation or medical insurance professional
  • Medical examiner

Online degrees in medical and health care fields can provide an excellent way to get into high growth health care careers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 2010 and 2020, more than 45 percent of the fastest growing occupations are in health care and nearly 25 percent of the occupations expected to contribute the largest number of new jobs are also in health care.

The Body Clock: Eating Schedule Is Equally Important As Sleep Cycle For Maintaining Rhythm

When we eat is just as important as what we eat. Pixabay, public domain

Planning out healthy meals throughout the day is a luxury some of us cannot afford. More and more people are skipping meals, eating outside the home, on the go, later in the day, and more irregularly due to more shift work and social jetlag — when someone has different sleeping patterns on weekends and weekdays. It would be nice to have a flexible meal schedule and healthy food on hand, but what’s more important in the long run: what we eat or when we eat it?

In two separate papers published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. researchers from King’s College London, Newcastle University, University of Surrey, and Nestlé Research Centre examine how our metabolic processes can alter or influence our internal clock when the timing, size, and quality of our meals start to go haywire.

“Whilst we have a much better understanding today of what we should be eating, we are still left with the question as to which meal should provide us with the most energy,” said Dr. Gerda Pot, Visiting Lecturer in the Diabetes and Nutritional Sciences Division at King’s College London, in a statement .

Shift Work

Pot and her colleagues combined data from a number of dietary studies with global differences in eating habits. Studies continually show how shift workers face an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Alternating between irregular and around-the-clock shifts cause a disruption in our circadian rhythm, and appetite, digestion, and metabolic processes are highly dependent on its 24-hour clock.

Social Jetlag

The researchers estimate that social jetlag affects more than 80 percent of people in central Europe, especially those living in urban areas. By staying up late and sleeping in on weekends, then going to bed early to wake up early during the week, we set up a mismatch between our circadian rhythm and our social sleep schedule. Over time, this imbalance causes metabolic changes that lead to obesity, heart disease, and cancer.

When We Should Eat

Different eating patterns from around the world depend on personal preference and local culture. For example, the French place their importance on pleasurable and social eating, which is why many people in France and the Mediterranean region consider lunch the most important meal of the day. Food choices in central England, on the other hand, reflect individual preferences and convenience. This often translates into skipping meals, calorie-dense snack foods, and a higher consumption of ready-made and fast-food meals.

Currently in both the United States and the United Kingdom, energy intake from food consumption tends to increase throughout the day. Breakfast provides the lowest amount of energy while dinner provides the highest. This same shift toward smaller breakfasts and bigger dinners has started in France in recent years as work patterns have changed. So are the people of France at risk for an obesity epidemic similar to the one seen in the U.S.?

Is Breakfast King?

In a recently concluded study. researchers from Umea University asked 889 16-year-old students about their breakfast eating habits, propensity to skip meals, and how important sweetness was to their enjoyment of food. Nine percent of the students practiced poor breakfast habits. When the research team caught back up with the participants at the age of 43, they found that people who skipped breakfast as kids were 68 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome.

“There seems to be some truth in the saying ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper,’ however, this warrants further investigation,” Pot added. “Although the evidence suggests that eating more calories later in the evening is associated with obesity, we are still far from understanding whether our energy intake should be distributed equally across the day or whether breakfast should contribute the greatest proportion of energy, followed by lunch and dinner.”

When We Should Work Out

Sleep and meals aren’t the only things whose timing influences our health — the time of the day we exercise also plays a role. Just like our dieting habits, when we work helps determine how effective exercise can be. However, there seems to be no clear winner between working out in the morning or at night. Both have their benefits: Working out in the evening is best for boosting muscle strength and size, while exercising in the morning helps with losing weight, improving sleeping, and reducing stress.

For up-to-date information on minimum passing scores, examination performance data, and general scoring methodology, please visit the Scores section of our website.

Score Reporting

Score Availability

Results for computer-based examinations (Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3) are typically available three to four weeks after your test date. However, release of results may take longer for various reasons. When selecting your test date and inquiring about results, you should allow at least eight weeks to receive notification that your score report is available. For Step 2 CS results, you should refer to the Step 2 CS Score Reporting Schedule. For more specific information about potential scoring delays, please visit the Announcement section of the USMLE website.

When your score is available, you will receive an email notification from your registration entity. Your score report will remain available on your registration entity’s website for approximately 120 days from the date of the email notification. After the score report is removed from the website, your scores will only be provided to you in the form of an official transcript, for a fee, through your registration entity. Visit the USMLE website for more details, including how to request a transcript for you or for a third party.

Reporting to Third Parties

The NBME reports the results of the USMLE to LCME- and AOA- accredited medical school programs for their students and graduates. For Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS, if you do not want your results reported to your medical school, you must send a signed request to the NBME. which must be received at least 10 business days before your scheduled test date. For Step 3, you must indicate your reporting preference on your application.

The ECFMG may provide the results of the USMLE to international medical schools for their students and graduates. For Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS, if you do not want your results reported to your medical school, you must submit a request for each examination administration, via the ECFMG website. at least 10 business days before your scheduled test date.

Examination data (including performance information and recorded patient encounters) from USMLE examinations may be used by the USMLE program or made available to third parties for research. In such instances, the data will be confidential, and individual examinees will not be identified in any publication. If you do not wish your score to be made available for research purposes, you must advise the USMLE Secretariat in writing.

Incomplete Scores

If you do not open every block of your Step 1, Step 2 CK, or Step 3 examination, your examination may not be scored and the attempt may be reported as an incomplete on your USMLE transcript.

For Step 2 CS, if you leave the test early, or otherwise fail to carry out one or more of the cases, your performance may be assessed on those cases you completed. If, based on the performance of the completed cases, a pass/fail determination cannot be made, the attempt may be recorded as an incomplete on your USMLE transcript.

To avoid misinterpretation and to protect your privacy, the USMLE program does not provide scores or outcomes by telephone, email, or fax to anyone. Additionally, the scoring process is not expedited or accelerated for any individual or group.

Score Rechecks

For all Steps and Step Components, a change in your score or in your pass/fail outcome based on a recheck is an extremely remote possibility. A rigorous process is used, including a double scoring process involving independent scoring systems, to ensure accurate results; to date, the score recheck process has not resulted in a score change. However, a recheck will be performed if you submit a written request and service fee to your registration entity. Your registration entity must receive the request no later than 90 days after your result was released to you.

For Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3, when a request for a score recheck is received, the original response record is retrieved and rescored using a system that is outside of the normal processing routine. The rechecked score is then compared with the original score.

For Step 2 CS, the ratings received from the standardized patients and from the physician note raters are retrieved, re-summed, and reconverted into final scores to verify the accuracy of the original outcome. Encounters and patient notes are not re-rated and videos are not re-reviewed during the recheck.

Score Validity

The performance of examinees is monitored and may be analyzed to detect aberrancies that raise questions about the validity of scores. The USMLE program reserves the right to cancel scores that are at or above the passing level if the USMLE program has a good faith basis for questioning whether they represent a valid measure of knowledge or competence as sampled by the examination. Questions about score validity may result from irregular behavior (please refer to the Irregular Behavior section of this Bulletin on pages 24-25) or other factors. If there are questions related to the validity of your score, your score report may be delayed, or any further reporting or verification of such scores may be withheld, pending completion of further review and/or investigation. You will have an opportunity to provide information that you consider relevant.

After review and analysis of all available information, scores will either be classified as valid and will be reported, or scores will be canceled and will not appear on your record. If scores are canceled, you will be advised of the options for retaking the examination. Anyone who has received a report of scores that are later canceled will be notified.

Anomalous Performance

Anomalous performance and/or unusual testing history may impact your access to the USMLE. If your performance raises concerns about your readiness to test or your motivation to pass, the USMLE program reserves the right to restrict your future access to its examinations and/or impose conditions upon future access. Do not test if you are not able or not ready on your scheduled test date.

IMPORTANT: You must pass all three subcomponents of Step 2 CS (ICE, CIS, SEP) in a single administration to obtain the overall designation of passing on Step 2 CS.

IMPORTANT: Taking a Step examination to familiarize yourself with the examination format, or for any reason other than to pass, is prohibited and may limit your future access to the USMLE.
