Buying or Selling an Automobile in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Lemon Laws

Massachusetts has laws that protect consumers when buying or leasing a new car. and buying a used car that does not meet expectations. These Lemon Laws require dealers to provide consumers with a written warranty against defects that impair a used vehicle’s use or safety, and require private parties to disclose any known use or safety defects.

Registration and Insurance

Separately, residents can apply for new plates or transfer an existing registration to a vehicle gifted by or purchased from a friend or family member. To do so, they will need:

Once collected, these materials should be taken to the nearest full-service RMV branch office .

For information on registering recreational vehicles, use resources from the Massachusetts Environmental Police .

Sales Tax

Sales tax equal to 6.25 percent of the vehicle’s purchase price is collected when a vehicle is bought from a dealer. In private sales, 6.25 percent of the purchase price or 6.25 percent of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) trade-in value — whichever is higher — is collected on the purchase of any new or used vehicle in Massachusetts. If no clean trade-in value is available, a default value agreed upon by both the RMV and Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) will be used.

If a vehicle is purchased outside of Massachusetts and sales tax is not paid in another state, sales tax must be submitted to Massachusetts by the purchaser. However, if sales tax was paid to the state of purchase, taxes may still be due to Massachusetts depending on the reciprocity relationship between states. A car purchased from a family member — or received as a gift — may be exempt from sales tax.

Vehicle Titles

A title is a document that indicates who has legal ownership of a vehicle. Anyone planning to buy or sell a used car (model year 1981 or newer) must have a title to transfer ownership so the buyer can register the vehicle. Without this, it cannot be registered.

Vehicles older than model year 1980 purchased by the current owner before November 26, 1990 can be registered without a title, as long as the bill of sale and a copy of the last registration for the vehicle are available.

Seven-Day Grace Period

In accordance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90 Section 2 — also known as the Massachusetts Seven-Day Registration Transfer Law — if you transfer ownership or lose possession of a motor vehicle, you have a seven-day grace period to transfer registration to a new vehicle.

This period begins on the date you transfer ownership or lose possession of the first vehicle and ends at 5 p.m. seven calendar days afterward. For example, if you transfer ownership of your car at noon on July 1, the grace period would end at 5 p.m. July 8.

To qualify for this grace period the following conditions must be met:

  • You have an active registration and are at least 18 years of age
  • The newly acquired vehicle or trailer must be of the same type and have the same number of wheels as the previous vehicle or trailer
  • You must carry the transfer documents, which show the registration number to be transferred, in your vehicle
  • You have lost possession of or disposed of your previous vehicle
  • The registration plates must be attached to the newly acquired vehicle

Westport Car Dealership Messes With Pizza Delivery Guy, Feels Internet’s Wrath

Boston.com Staff | 01.14.15 | 4:44 PM

A video of car dealership employees in Westport getting into a heated argument with a local pizza delivery man over $7 has led to Internet anger and a personal apology.

The video, posted on Liveleak, begins with a delivery man returning $7 in cash to the dealership that he had thought was a tip. By the end of the video, one dealership worker threatens to put my foot in your ass and another says he will call the delivery man s manager and get him fired.

The delivery man in the video is an employee at Palace Pizza named Jarrid Tansey, according to two employees there. Lianette Hernandez, a cook and cashier, and Adam Willoughby, a manager, confirmed the video came from an interaction at the nearby dealership F R Auto Sales on Saturday.

The total bill for the pizza and drinks was just over $42, Hernandez said, and dealership workers gave Tansey $50 in two twenties and two fives. In the video, Tansey says he confirmed that they wanted to give the whole $50, and then left with what he assumed was a $7-and-change tip.

However, the dealership then called the pizza place back and forced him to return the $7-and-change, and he was left without a tip, leading to the heated conversation on video.

It just doesn t make sense why you d hand me a bill that you were just gonna have me drive back here to give you back anyway, Tansey says in the video. I m not mad, I just had to waste my resources coming back here.

But the office-workers are adamant about their position in the video.

So listen: The manager apologized once for you. Do you want him to apologize again for you? the worker in blue says.

Out the door before I put my foot in your ass, a female office-worker in green says.

Get the f—ing owner and the manager on the phone, I want that mother-f—er done, another man in the office says after Tansey leaves. I want him fired.

The video was originally posted on YouTube, but it has since been made private. However, a Google index of the video shows the title as originally being irate pizza driver. The angle of the video suggests it comes from a stationary security camera inside the dealership s office.

Willoughby, who was working that night, said he got a call from F R Auto Sales saying that Tansey had verbally berated them. He said they took the call seriously at first and asked Tansey about the interaction. After Tansey explained what had happened, managers decided not to discipline the driver.

This isn t the first time we have had problems with F R Auto, Willoughby said.

All the time, there s always a problem, always an issue, Hernandez said. We ve been going back and forth with them for a long time.

Palace Pizza has been getting supportive calls all day from across the country, and several people have pledged to raise or donate money for Tansey.

In addition, the owner of the dealership and his son came by to apologize to Palace Pizza in person on Wednesday.

I was the manager on that night, and today they came and spoke to me, profusely apologized, Willoughby said. We both want to make things right between us. We don t want any bad blood.

Commenters who claim to have seen the YouTube video before it was made private identify the dealership as F R Auto Sales in Westport. Review pages of that dealership on Yelp and Google were being flooded with negative ratings on Wednesday. In addition, the dealership s website struggled to load.

Calls to the dealership through their main phone line did not go through. Messages left through the site s Google Connect link, Facebook account, listed email, and on Twitter were not immediately returned.

  • 80% loan-to-value ( LTV ) or less
  • 20% or greater down payment

Adjustable Rate Mortgages

Adjustable Rate Mortgage ( ARM ) products have an initial fixed rate period of 3, 5, 7, or 10 years, and a full loan term of 30 years (360 months). After the initial fixed period has expired, the interest rate will be adjusted annually based upon an index plus a margin. An interest rate cap limits how high the interest rate may rise at each adjustment. Interest rate caps differ by ARM product.

Depending on market conditions at the time you lock your Initial Interest Rate, as well as the point option you select, your Initial Interest Rate may not be based on the Index used to make later adjustments. Instead, your Initial Interest Rate may have a discount or premium. A premium occurs when the Initial Interest Rate is more than the sum of the Index plus Margin. A discount occurs when the Initial Interest Rate is less than the sum of the Index plus Margin. Your interest rate may not move in the same direction as the Index. For example, if your loan has a premium, your interest rate may decline on the First Rate Change Date even if the Index remains the same or increases. If you choose a rate lock option that provides for a floating rate, your Initial Interest Rate at closing may be different from the interest rate in effect at the time you apply for your loan. The amount of the premium or discount may change as a result.

Example: Let’s assume you have an ARM loan that is fixed for the first five years; a loan amount of $250,000; a loan term of 30 years (360 months); an initial interest rate of 3.50%; a margin of 2.25%; an initial interest rate cap of 2.00%; an annual rate cap of 2.00%; and a lifetime cap of 5.00%. Under these assumptions, your initial loan payment for principal and interest will be $1,122.62. At your first adjustment, the interest rate cannot increase above 5.50% or decrease below 2.25% (the margin). If the interest rate reached the lifetime maximum cap of 8.50%, your payment would reach an amount of $1,788.81.

State and other conditions and restrictions may apply.

Gosnold, Massachusetts

Gosnold Town Hall in the village of Cuttyhunk

Location in Dukes County in Massachusetts

History

The earliest settlers of the Elizabeth Islands were the Wampanoag Native Americans. The tribe did not settle permanently on the Elizabeth Islands, but used them in summer for hunting. fishing. and gardening. Occasionally, arrowheads or stone tools are unsurfaced on the islands. The islands’ names come from the Wampanoag language .

The Elizabeth Islands, including Cuttyhunk, were discovered by Europeans in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold. He and his crew attempted to establish a trading post on Cuttyhunk so that they could trade with the natives, the first attempt by Europeans to do so. The trading post was abandoned after only a few weeks, and Gosnold decided to return home. Upon his return to England. the British Crown claimed jurisdiction of the island chain.

Gosnold was first settled in 1641, the year of purchase of the islands by Thomas Mayhew, Sr. The islands were claimed by the Wampanoag until 1658, when the Wampanoag sachem transferred the deed of ownership to Mayhew. Constituting Dukes County. New York since 1683, the Elizabeth Islands, Martha’s Vineyard. and Nantucket. were transferred to the newly created Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1691. Gosnold was officially incorporated in 1864, having formerly belonged to the town of Chilmark. [ 1 ]

It consists of the Elizabeth Islands, including Nonamesset Island. Uncatena Island. Naushon Island. Pasque Island. Nashawena Island. Penikese Island. Cuttyhunk Island and several smaller islands. The string of islands extend roughly southwest of the southwestern tip of Falmouth. with the closest island, Nonamesset, being less than a third of a mile away at its closest point. Gosnold is governed on the local level by the open town meeting form of government, and is led by a board of selectmen. Due to its geographic isolation and small population, the town has a waiver from the Commonwealth from anti-nepotism laws. [1]

Education

The town currently has four students (as of the 2009-10 school year) attending school in Cuttyhunk, with others attending schools on the mainland. Penikese Island is also home to The Penikese School, a private school for troubled boys.

Ms. Hayward recently represented my family in a child custody trial. Her dedication to, and constant communication with our family, her attention to detail, her professionalism and the thorough research she conducted (in spite of short notice of the trial) were outstanding and contributed to our winning the case. I would recommend her without hesitation. by a Child Custody client

Great Divorce Attorney

Lorelei was absolutely wonderful to work with. I have dealt with several attorneys in the past and Lorelei was beyond comparison when it came to her knowledge of my case as well as her preparedness for the judicial process. She is very personable, and at all times she showed a genuine concern for my welfare regarding my case.

Excellent Trial Preparation

Ms. Hayward did excellent work on our case. She took the matter quite seriously, preparing adequately for trial and ultimately winning but also approached the situation in a way that helped us breathe a little. I have worked with Lorelei Hayward over the past six years. She has handled by divorce matter as well as the various matters that were a derivative of my divorce (child support modification, child support payments, etc.). She made it a point to understand my situation, listen to my position, and, as I requested, to educate me as to the workings of divorce law and my rights. Ms. Hayward brought experience and empathy to the proceedings, and was patient with my many questions and requests. Her courtroom presence was outstanding and I would recommend her without reservation. Her success is appreciated! by a Divorce client

Great support, great focus, great results, great! great! great!

I had asked a recently divorced friend for a recommendation for an attorney. He recommended his ex-wife s lawyer. From the other side of the aisle he said Attorney Hayward did a great job he wished he had hired her. I stopped by her firm to discuss my case, full of twists and turns, custody nuances and unusual details.

Massachusetts drug rehab centers play vital roles in the physical health and mental well-being of the state’s residents.

Home to Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other top-ranked centers of learning and research, this state is global hub of intellectual activity. To benefit from the social and cultural opportunities that this state has to offer, look for a Massachusetts addiction treatment center that can help you break free from the trap of addiction. Dual Diagnosis Drug Rehab in Massachusetts In Massachusetts, as in the rest of the US, mental illness and substance abuse often go hand in hand. Not every rehab facility is equipped to treat psychiatric conditions like borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia or major depression. Finding a treatment center that specializes in treating individuals with a dual diagnosis may take a little extra time, but the results will be well worth the effort.

For many people who suffer from substance abuse and mental illness, maintaining a consistent source of income becomes impossible.

Paranoia, depression and anxiety can result in self-isolation, social marginalization and homelessness. The Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services publishes a directory of programs that provide addiction treatment to residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, regardless of their ability to pay. At an integrated treatment program, you can receive psychotherapy for mental illness while participating in recovery services for addiction.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. the need for dual diagnosis treatment is a widespread concern:

  • Up to half of all people with severe mental illness also abuse drugs or alcohol.
  • About 37 percent of alcoholics have one or more psychiatric diagnoses.
  • Approximately 53 percent of drug addicts have at least one psychiatric illness.
  • About 29 percent of those who are diagnosed with a mental health disorder also have a problem with drugs or alcohol.

Traditional drug rehab programs can’t always provide adequate care for clients with a co-occurring mental health disorder. An integrated approach to dual diagnosis treatment is the most effective way to ensure a complete recovery from both conditions.

Locating Massachusetts Recovery Services

When you’re struggling with addiction and feeling mentally and physically ill, the idea of finding a Massachusetts drug rehab center may seem overwhelming. It may be tempting to simply open the phone book and call the first rehab center you find. But choosing an addiction rehab center at random may not get you the results you’re looking for, especially if you need treatment for a co-occurring disorder. Take the time to find a facility whose staff are trained and credentialed in mental health services as well as substance abuse treatment.

What can you expect when you’re searching for a Massachusetts drug rehabilitation center? According to the Substance Abuse and Mental health treatment Administration. which tracks substance abuse facilities in the Commonwealth:

  • About 80 percent of the state’s facilities are private nonprofit rehab centers.
  • Approximately 16 percent of the rehab centers in Massachusetts have private for-profit status.
  • About 66 percent of rehab facilities offered outpatient services as well as inpatient addiction treatment.
  • Approximately 41 percent provided a residential treatment program.
  • About 58 percent offered opioid addiction management among their recovery services.
