    about used cars

If you’ve come here looking for a used or certified pre-owned car, truck, SUV, crossover, hatchback, hybrid or convertible, then you’re in the right place. Edmunds has everything you need to know about buying or selling a used vehicle, including Carfax vehicle history reports, dealership listings and pricing information, expert car reviews, consumer car reviews, car dealership reviews, car price comparisons, car appraisal calculators, images and videos, technical features and specs, user forums and more.

At Edmunds, you’ll be able to browse thousands of used cars, trucks and SUVs for sale with special offers, appraise your current car, and research the car, SUV or truck of your dreams. You can limit your search to certified pre-owned (or CPO) vehicles for sale and be a click away from articles by our experts that will give you the best car shopping and buying tips and advice. Let’s take a closer look at each of these aids to easier used-car shopping.

The INVENTORY tab at the top of the page allows you to browse used cars for sale from popular makes such as Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Infiniti, Acura and Subaru. The inventory tool allows you to cast a much wider net than simply visiting your local dealership’s website. Start with the make and model of the vehicle that you’re interested in. You’ll have the option to refine your search by price, distance, model year and mileage. If you’re looking for specific options or features, a certain trim level or a specific color, there are more advanced search filters available, including engine type, fuel type, drivetrain, powertrain, airbags, air-conditioning and much more. After you find the car, SUV, truck or hybrid that you’re interested in, select the listing to check out the VIN details page for that vehicle and get more information. There you’ll find a description of the vehicle from the dealer, vehicle features and options, contact information for that dealership, dealer reviews, a ballpark insurance estimate, and a link to see a Carfax vehicle history report.

The APPRAISE tab at the top of the page lets you enter your car’s basic information, odometer reading, trim level, and overall condition. Then Edmunds provides you with the True Market Value (TMV) for your used car or vehicle. Edmunds’s True Market Value or used car value is is a great starting point for negotiation of a used-car sale between a private buyer and seller. This is an “as is” value that does not include any warranties. The final sales price depends on the car’s actual condition and local market factors. You can use this used car value estimate to price your car for sale or to negotiate a trade-in for a new, CPO, or previously owned car for sale from a local dealer. The used car value estimate is also useful for assessing retail pricing at a car dealer. You can try it out by clicking the “APPRAISE” tab, above. Once you enter your vehicle details, you will receive three estimates for your used car’s value: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you for your used car; “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the pre-owned vehicle yourself; and “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this used model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealership might sell it for as a certified pre-owned vehicle.

The RESEARCH tab points you to our expert analysis of the make and model of the car you select. You can read our editors’ reviews and learn about each generation of the vehicle you’re interested in. From there, you can narrow the focus of your car buying research by selecting a particular model year and learning more by checking out photos of the cars, researching local dealership listings, car valuation, consumer reviews, editors’ reviews, pros & cons, features & specs, and safety information. That’s a world of information. And we’ve put it all right at your fingertips.

Are you thinking about trading in your vehicle at the dealership or selling it yourself? Find out what your used car is worth with our True Market Value appraisal tool. Enter the year, make and model to get started. Make sure you know the options on your vehicle and the current odometer reading. Be honest about the condition level. Most cars will fall in the “average” to “clean” range.

The appraisal tool will give you three prices: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you. “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the vehicle yourself. “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealer might sell it for as a CPO vehicle.

If you are hesitant about buying a traditional used car, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. These vehicles tend to be newer, have gone through a more detailed inspection process and come with a limited warranty. The Edmunds inventory tool will have an option to sort the list to show only CPO vehicles. You can also go directly to the CPO cars page.

Explore Car-Buying Articles: If you’re unsure about the next steps in buying a used car — or car buying in general — Edmunds has research articles that can help. Take a look at those we’ve linked to on this page, or visit our research main page for a full list of articles that have been written by Edmunds car-shopping experts.

    about used cars

Best electric car for kids reviews

Electric cars for kids – What to look for:

When you’re a parent who wants to give their child a perfect way to experience being an adult, getting one of the top ten electric cars for kids will surely help you earn brownie points from your precious one. Imagine the big grin and youthful delight you’ll get treated to when you present your child with a new electric car for kids on their birthday.

    Model and Features

The models of highest rated electric cars for kids deserve a showroom just like adult cars do. It helps to have a pretty good idea what type you will be getting. Will it be outdoor or indoor type? The most popular units are outdoor types since they really give that feeling of freedom that a child deserves. Road cars have replicas too, and these include Porsches, Aston Martins, BMWs, Ferraris, Audi TTs and plenty more. Stylish and chic, such cars can give plenty of backyard play. Rugged models include Jeeps, Hummers or Ford Mustangs. Your child will surely enjoy being able to use forward and reverse gears, a side view mirror, a key start, a foot accelerator, a car horn, steering and fully working lights on his car, so check out models that carry those features. The decals, if any, should be as authentic as possible.

    Safety provisions

The best play car for the money should incorporate safety features in the package. Even if your child just uses the electric car in your backyard, sudden bumps may cause him to topple from his seat. Teach him about safety this early by ensuring that the toy car has a seat belt. Make sure that the seats are well attached to their bases. The seat should enable your child to see where he’s going, built at just the right height. The components of the toy car should carry no toxic paint, sharp edges or corners. Remember that the unit is still pretty much a toy, so it should be manufactured under the same standards that all children’s toys are made. Most importantly, the product should include a fully functional parental remote control in order to ensure guidance and safe play at all times.

Which electric car for kids is the best? Ask any child that question and battery life is sure to come up one way or the other. Ideally, the car should give around 2 hours of driving on flat terrain on the average. That’s for a single charge. It is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation on charging the car’s battery. The car’s craftsmanship should be sturdy for a toy of this type. Any assembly to be done must be minimal at most. The car itself should not require too much maintenance when used according to manufacturer’s recommendations and kept in good condition. A warranty would be nice, as the cost of replacing parts can be quite expensive. The motor or battery is the element that generally requires maintenance, repair or replacement.

A 3rd row of seats means no one s crammed in too tight and 6 airbags keep everyone safe and sound and with 116.4 cubic feet of space, you can outfit the team and cater the game, too!

Terrific online educational games, especially geography.

Our preschool teacher just sent us homework with this new website on it! My twins love it – they are 4 1/2 and can’t get enough! The sounds, the action, so many choices and things to do. I bookmarked this for them and have sent the website to numerous friends and best of all it’s FREE!

I am thrilled to have stumbled upon your site! As a homeschooling mom, I love to find sites that encourage brain activity and reinforce the facts I teach during learning time!

    Your games are AMAZING!

Your website has SO much to offer!

This site is exactly what I have been looking for! I have four children within five years of age and they can all play your games! I love that you can choose your level of difficulty. The games are colorful and simple, not cluttered like some. The instructions are easy to understand and they cover basic learning that can be neglected with other “too busy” games. I can’t believe what a blessing it is to have stumbled upon this site! I looked up “kindergarten math games online.” This is the first one that I actually enjoyed navigating around in and that actually kept the kids’ attention without discouraging them.

This site will be a daily part of our learning! The kids were fighting over who could take the next turn at the learning game! It is reinforcing everything I am trying to teach.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

Banish backseat boredom without spending a dime By Suzanne Rowan Kelleher

    Road Trips

Keep kids entertained with toys, games, and apps. (Flickr: jencu)

What do parents dread most about family road trips . It’s not the cost of filling up the gas tank. It’s also not traffic or toll roads or Sunday drivers. It’s the thought of their own little cherubs stuck together in tight quarters for hours. Oh, the backseat squabbling. The poking. The whining. The impatient cries of “Are we there yet?” Just. make. it. stop.

Luckily, there are lots of ways to keep kids happily entertained and enjoying each other’s company . And the best part? You can achieve it without spending a dime. Here are our picks for the 10 best free car games for kids:

    1. I Spy. “I spy with my little eye, something red.” This easy-to-learn game is perfect for preschoolers, and can keep them entertained for unbelievably long periods of time. The directions are simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.

    2. Road Trip Bingo . This fun game combines bingo with a scavenger hunt. Give each child a flat surface, such as a clipboard or hardcover book, to put on his or her lap. Each player gets a free printable bingo card and a zip-lock bag with 16 pennies. When a player spies an item on his card, he covers the picture with a penny. Just like in regular bingo, the first player to cover all the squares in a straight line wins.

    Facts About Cars for Kids

Yesterday’s muscle car collectors are today’s video-gamers. Could the future of car collecting be in jeopardy?

Most Ford Model T’s were black. You can make biofuel from garbage. And, automobile emissions are the No. 1 cause of air pollution in the United States today. Who knew? If you’re the parent of a young car enthusiast who has many questions, you probably did.

The First Cars Were Powered by Steam

The first cars invented were powered by steam. They were similar to small locomotives in this respect, and many did not really work very well. Inventors were making steam-powered cars as early as the 1770s, more than 100 years before Henry Ford invented his Model-T, according to the Smithsonian website. Most historians credit an ironmonger named Thomas Newcomen with inventing the first engine to run on fire and steam. He introduced his design in 1712. It was a large and complicated affair that was initially used to draw water out of mines, according to a web page on the University of Dayton website.

The Ford Model T Made Cars Affordable

The Ford Model T was manufactured from 1908 to 1927. It originally sold for $850, but because of advancements in assembly-line production, it had dropped in price to $300 by 1925, and — for the first time ever — average Americans could afford it. The Ford Model T was also called the Tin Lizzie and the Flivver. It was mass-produced mostly in black because, at the time, black paint dried faster than any other color, making the production of black cars quicker and more efficient, according to History.com. The Smithsonian Institution has a 1913 Ford Model T on display in its National Museum of American History (americanhistory.si.edu).

Today’s Car Engines Pollute the Atmosphere

Today, most cars are powered by gasoline engines. This enables them to travel farther than electric cars or cars of old, but it also contributes to pollutants in the Earth’s atmosphere. Emissions from transportation are the top source of air pollution in the United States today. When car and truck engines burn gasoline, they emit by-products such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons — toxins that contribute to smog and global warming. Some scientists think that inventing engines that run on cellulosic biofuels — fuels derived from grasses, garbage and waste products from forests and farms — is the answer to transportation pollution in the United States.

CAR CRAFTS FOR KIDS: Ideas to make toy cars and automobiles with easy arts and crafts decorations, instructions, patterns, and activities for children, preschoolers, and teens

Cars are so much fun to make. especially the ones that can move on their own. The trick to making your own toy cars is figuring out the way that wheels turn and move. If you don’t know the mechanics of how wheels move, than you won’t be able to make your own cars. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an engineer to know how vehicle’s wheels move and turn.

TRICK TO MAKING WHEELS AND AXLES ON TOY CARS

There are two ways to make wheels turn. One way is the make the wheels spin and the other way is to make the axle spin. Neither way is the right way or the wrong way. both work just fine.

To make a car / vehicle with a spinning axle : Slip the axle (such as a toothpick) through a larger tube / cylinder (such as a straw). Now make wheels out of something (such as bottle caps, buttons, cork, etc). and stick these to the end of the axle (toothpick, chopstick, pencil, etc). These wheels must be tightly secured to the axle. so the axle turns inside the tube, but the wheels don’t.

To make a car / vehicle with spinning wheels : Okay, so if you want the wheels to spin, then you will need to place the axle (toothpick, etc) inside a bigger hole in the middle of each wheel (or a tube / cylinder (straw) that is placed in the middle of each wheel). An example of this would be to cut a hole in a bottle cap. one large enough to stick a small straw inside of it. Then place the toothpick in between both wheels. now the wheels will turn on the toothpick (axle) instead of the axle turning with the wheels as one piece.

ITEMS to MAKE TOY CARS WITH

For the body of the car : Some items that would be great for the body of the car are clothespins, boxes, empty soda bottles, milk cartons, empty match boxes, plastic hair rollers, film cannisters, disposable cups, lettuce containers, spice containers.

For the axles: toothpicks, chopsticks, skewers, old markers, pencils, tinker toy sticks, lego rods, plastic drinking straws, dowels, branches that are straight, etc.

For the wheels: Some items that would be good for the wheels are candy gum balls, carrot slices, plastic caps, life savers candy, buttons, some beads, thread spools, vcr spools (take apart a vcr tape that isn’t used any more), metal washers, CDs or DVDs, cardboard tubes (cut into smaller pieces).

Now just use your creativity. engineer a cool, working toy car. Look below for the available crafts ideas.

    Clothespin Gumball Cars

Here is an example of a simple car that you can make with basic items from around the house. Get a wooden clothespin, a drinking straw, 4 gumballs, toothpicks, and tape. Cut a straw into two 1-inch pieces. Place one of the straws into the space that you can clip things into (as seen in the picture above) and tape the other one to the back of the clip. Then put a toothpick thru each of these straws and stab a gumball to the ends. as seen in the picture above. Then you are done, just turn the clothespin over so that the tape is on the bottom and race your car. Don’t eat these gumballs. -)

    Balloon Powered Milk Carton Cars

Here is your chance to make a car that moves on its own – and it isn’t too difficult to make either. Ask your parents to recycle an empty milk carton. Clean out the milk carton and dry thoroughly. Cut the milk carton (as seen in picture #1 above) so that you have most of one side and a little bit of the bottom of the carton. it should look like picture #2 above. Poke a hole in the bottom portion of the carton (picture 2). This is where the balloon will be pushed through. Tape straws on the long side of the carton. Get 4 milk jug caps and poke a small hole in each one. Push a chopstick into one of the caps and then put the chopstick thru one of the straws. Then push a cap on the other side of the chopstick. Do the same thing for the other set of wheels. The cap should be tight on the chopstick so that it doesn’t spin at all. Now push a balloon thru the hole in the carton. and blow it up with air (as seen in picture #3 above). let it go and the car should zoom away. Have fun.

    Materials for Paper Car Craft

    Directions for Paper Car Craft

    1. Print out the free car template. Cut out the car shape and trace it onto some sturdy paper (like card stock or a manilla folder).

    2. Cut out the car shape from the center leaving the surrounding area intact. You now have a car-shaped stencil.

    3. Place the stencil on top of a blank piece of art paper. (For smaller kids you might want to tape the stencil down so it doesn t move as they are working.)

    4. Place some tempera paint on a paper plate.

Dip your small square sponge into the paint and use it like a stamp, stamping paint over and over inside the stencil. (You can stamp quite a few times before having to dip your sponge into the paint again.)

    5. Carefully remove the stencil to reveal your car shape. Let it dry.

    6. Cut out two wheels from some black paper. (We used patterned scrapbooking paper, similar to this. for a neat look!)

    7. Cut out two smaller white circles. (We used a 1 inch hole punch. but you can cut these by hand if you d prefer.)

    8. Cut out the dry painted car shape leaving a tiny white border around the edge.

    9. Glue the white circles onto the center of the black circles creating wheels. Glue the wheels onto your car.

Let your car craft dry and display it!

Below are the 2012 Top 10 Best Cars for Kids along with some interesting stats on just how much time a full time parent’s contribution is really worth!

The Top 10 Cars for Kids

When you think about cars for kids, you re mostly thinking safety, right? But you know the kids are going to need some music or TV to keep quiet so you can focus on the road. And when they inevitably aren t quiet, navigation helps you find your destination anyway, and fuel efficiency makes sure you aren t paying for it at the pumps! Without further ado, the best cars for carrying your kids.

    Hyundai Sonata

At just under $19,700, this compact car still boasts 16.4 cubic feet of cargo space and seating for 5. The 7 speakers will do justice to whatever you pull up on your iPod or satellite radio, and the 6 airbags will keep you all secure. With optional navigation and fuel efficiency to rival others (35 MPG in the city and 40 on the highway!) you can get your motor running and power to your destination.

This car will run you just $19,500, and you can run all over town in it easily. There s nearly 20 cubic feet of cargo space and seating for 5 people to boot. With 6 Sirius speakers, satellite radio and hookups for an iPod, the kids can jam out the 6 airbags instill confidence in their safety. You ll also get 24 MPG in the city, and optional navigation guides you to Grandma s at 35 MPG on the highway!

The Ford Fusion comes in at $20,200 and is great if you don t need quite as much storage, at 11.8 cubic feet. There s space for the whole family and more than enough airbags for all. Plug in your iPod or put on a DVD to entertain the team while you drive, that way you can focus on your navigation system and get there fast plus drivers get 23 MPG in the city or 34 on the highway.

    Volkswagen Passat

The price tag on this V-dub is just $19,995, and with as many airbags as speakers (6) and seating for 5, that s quite the deal! Add in that you can play your own tunes and get optional navigation and you ve got yourself a great little family car. It s got nearly 16 cubic feet of storage space, gets 20 MPG in the city and 28 on the highway.

    Chevy Traverse

If your family is larger than a standard car can handle (or you play chauffeur for the neighborhood kids) you can still seat 8 for less than $30,000. Keep em occupied with an optional DVD player or some music on the iPod or radio, they won t miss a thing with 10 Bose premium speakers. A 3rd row of seats means no one s crammed in too tight and 6 airbags keep everyone safe and sound and with 116.4 cubic feet of space, you can outfit the team and cater the game, too!

    Jeep Cherokee

$26,995 buys you this Jeep. You ll get 68.7 cubic feet of cargo space, space for 5 people, 7 airbags, and 4-wheel drive for those backroads. You ve also got an optional DVD player and iPod hookup, as well as navigation. As for mileage, you ll get 17 in the city and 23 on the highway.

    Ford Explorer

Looking for 10 speakers, 4-wheel drive, a whole lot of storage over 80 cubic feet and a price tag under $30,000? How about $28,170 for the Explorer? You can also opt-in for navigation and a DVD player to pacify the kids on long trips. The Explorer has room for 5 and comes with 6 airbags with 18 MPG in the city, 25 on the highway the best for an SUV.

You want 7 speakers, 70.9 cubic feet of storage and reasonable gas mileage? Just $24,395 will grant you all that and more 4-wheel drive, optional navigation and DVD player, seating for 5. What s the MPG on this spacious mid-size? 23 in the city, 31 on the highway.

    Toyota Sienna

How much storage do you think you could get for just over $25,000? Turns out, 70.5 cubic feet is pretty sweet. The Toyota Sienna will seat 7 people in this minivan, and there s more than 1 JBL speaker per person to enjoy iPod music or satellite radio. There s also 3rd row seating and wireless headset capability, so no one gets tangled. With just as many airbags as seats, everyone rides safely and you will clock 18 MPG in the city or 25 on the highway in this van.

    Dodge Durango

Kings and queens of the road, take note. At $28,995, the Dodge Durango has you riding high. 7 people fit into this vehicle, with 84.5 cubic feet of space left over. 4-wheel drive means you can take this auto where it needs to go, and the optional DVD player, iPod capability, radio and 10 Alpine speakers make sure you get there without a bored passenger. 6 airbags don t hurt, either. You ll get 16 miles to the gallon on city streets, and 23 on the highway.

The Cost of Being a Sports Mom or Dad

Parenting is not cheap and the amount of time kids consume can get expensive. Imagine having to hire someone to do everything or giving up your day job to be a full time parent. The time value can get really expensive no matter what sports your kids play!

    • If your child plays hockey, you ll spend about 1,000 hours a year on it That time is valued at $162,700!
    • Gymnastics buff? 820 hours per year That s about $133,414 worth of time!
    • Moms and dads of soccer stars spend about 320 hours per year $52,064 could be earned in that time!
    • Tiny dancers occupy about 490 hours each year which works out to $79,723 annually!
    • Footballers hut, hut, hike for 420 hours each year and parents can value that time at about $68,334!
    • Little league baseball kids use about 260 hours a year $42,302 is the time value for a parent!
    • Horseback riders ride on for 750 hours every year That s about $122,025!

There are about 300 car models on the US market, so be sure to choose the right one for your family. (FYI: Kids are 50% safer when Grandma or Grandpa is driving, so make the drive once in awhile and let your own parents do the driving!)

Best Car Toys for Kids Who Love Things That Go Vroom

    By Kristen Ryan. Toys Expert

For kids who are obsessed with everything on wheels, we ve pulled together a list of our favorite car, truck and digger toys. Find great car toys for the boys — and girls — on your gift list who love things that roll, race and crash!

    1. Hess Race Car and Racer

2009 Hess Race Car and Racer. Photo Hess This year s annual Hess vehicle is called the Hess Race Car and Racer. It s two race cars in one, literally. The smaller car features a pull-back engine that makes the car go really fast while the large one has sound effects. Both cars have flashing lights. The coolest part is how the little car hides inside the big one. So great! More

    2. Automoblox

    Automoblox. Photo Automoblox

In 1992 an industrial design student set out to reinvent classic, wooden car toys. 12 years later, Automoblox hit the shelves.

Automoblox invite children to assemble and disassemble, create and recreate race cars using wood and plastic pieces. The chassis come apart to make sleeker, faster cars and the roof comes off to create a convertible. The tires and color schemes can be swapped among several different cars.

They do have small pieces so Automoblox are recommended for ages 3 and up, but I waited until my son was 4 to ensure that he could build his cars without help. They are very well made and will last for years. Buy from Amazon

    3. Kettler CAT Junior Vehicles

    Caterpillar Junior Excavator. Photo Kettler

Made of rough-and-tumble plastic with big, noisy wheels, Caterpillar Junior offers an assortment of construction vehicles that includes a dump truck, an excavator and a Jeep.

My two sons, ages 1 and 4, have proved that Caterpillar Junior vehicles are super tough. The vehicles are big (up to 14 inches) and the kids bend down and push them around at a full run. The cabs are open so there’s room for LEGO men or even small stuffed animals to drive, and we’ve filled the dump truck with everything from rocks to junk mail. I can’t count how many times ours have been thrown down the stairs, doused by the hose or driven off road in our yard and we’ve never had a problem with any part of the vehicles breaking. Buy from Amazon

    4. Dunebug’s Sand Truck

I’m a huge fan of Sprig, the Colorado company founded by a toy designer who jumped ship from one of the big brands to start his own, eco-friendly toy company. All of the Sprig toys are made from “Sprigwood,” a blend of sawdust and recycled plastic. Give them a sniff and you’ll smell pine trees!

Dunebug’s Sand Truck is basically brilliant. Disassemble the truck and the dumper becomes a bucket, its cover becomes a shovel and the grill becomes a rake. It comes with a Dunebug character and a pack of wildflower seeds so the kids can use the toy to plant a garden. These toy designers are really clever! Buy from Amazon

    5. “Cars” Floor Mat

For around $20 you can transform your child’s room into Radiator Springs, the town from the Disney movie Cars. They will play for hours and hours, driving cars of all descriptions around the roads, train tracks and buildings printed on this three-foot by three-foot rug. We picked ours up at Home Depot, which also carries a Home Depot version of the rug.

    6. Green Toys Recycling Truck

The Green Toys vehicles don’t have metal axles and the cars are brightly colored and extremely tough. More

    8 Fun Car Game Ideas

Road trips with your children don’t have to be difficult ordeals punctuated with a repeated “Are we there yet?” There are plenty of ways to make time in the car fun for both you and your child. Here are eight fun games to try the next time you’re on the road again.

    1. The Alphabet Game

Ages 5 and up. One person chooses the right-hand side of the road, and someone else the left. Each player looks for letters of the alphabet that appear on signs or license plates on their side. The object of the game is to point out all the letters of the alphabet in order, from A to Z. The first person to spot the entire alphabet wins.

    2. The Animal Name Game

Ages 6 and up. One person names an animal. Then each person in order has to name another animal (no repeating!) that starts with the last letter of the previous animal named. There are no winners or losers in this game. With older children, try the game with TV shows, or geographical categories such as cities or countries.

    3. Twenty Questions

Ages 4 and up. One person secretly thinks of either an animal, mineral, or vegetable. The other players then take turns asking yes-or-no questions, such as “Can it fly?” or “Does it grow in the ground?” After the players have asked 20 questions, each player gets a chance to make a guess.

    4. Telephone

Ages 4 and up. A child whispers a story to someone else in the car. That person whispers the same story — as close to a word-for-word recount as possible — to a third person, and so on. The last person to hear the story repeats it out loud so everyone can hear. Invariably, some of the story will have been lost in the translation, and the resulting garbled message usually inspires a good laugh.

    5. The Theme Song Game

Ages 5 and up. One person hums the tune to a favorite TV show, and everyone else tries to name the show as fast as possible. The first person to guess correctly hums the next song.

    6. Memory Test

Ages 6 and up. The first person says “A is for —” filling in the blank with any word beginning with the letter A, such as “apple.” The second person comes up with a word for the letter B, such as “book,” but must also repeat the “A” word: “A is for apple, B is for book.” Continue through the alphabet, each person taking several turns and reciting more and more letters and words. By the time you reach the letter Z, that player will recite the whole alphabet and its corresponding words. However, if you’re playing with younger kids you may want to choose an earlier letter than “Z” to be the final one.

    7. Secret Place Race

Ages 7 and up. One person looks at a road map and finds a small town, village, river, etc. That person announces the name of the place she has chosen. A second player has 60 seconds to look at the map and try to find the secret place.

    8. Restaurant Race

Ages 5 and up. Each player chooses a restaurant, such as Burger King, Taco Bell, McDonalds, etc. Players earn points by spotting their restaurant off the road, on a billboard, on exit markers, on Food/Fuel signs, or by hearing it mentioned on the radio. Impose a time limit — say, 20 minutes — and then add up the points.

Car-Collecting Could Become a Passion of the Past

    Cars for Kids – Comparison Tests #how #to #sell #a #car

    #cars for kids
    #

Just the thing for the budding motorhead in the family.

    Comparison Tests

About 1905, when it became apparent that this new invention called the automobile would probably hang around for a while, versions of Daddy’s new car began being built for kids.

By 1907, the slick Elite Junior, a little car built by Standard Auto Supply and Manufacturing of New York, was selling for $200, an enormous sum for a child’s plaything. Power came from winding up a spring that projected out the rear of the car. Lots of cheap kids’ cars, costing less than $10, were around — the Green Auto Racer, the Speed King, and the Big Racer, all of which resembled Model Ts. There were even a few steam-powered cars for kids, as well as electric and gasoline miniatures.

But just as the Model T has evolved and changed into the cars we know today, children’s cars have modernized, too. To see what’s available these days, we rounded up four types of cars powered by four different sources — foot to the floor, pedal, electric, and gasoline — and let the children of C/D staffers do the test driving.

The simpler of the cars were the Deluxe Cozy Convertible for one-to-three-year-olds and the Cozy Coupe II for kids 18 months to five years old, both made by the Little Tikes Company of Hudson, Ohio. For kids two and older, we had an eye-catching Gendron Pioneer Roadster pedal car made by Pedal Car Classics of San Mateo, California. For kids three and older, we tried the Gaucho Grande from Peg-Perego in Fort Wayne, Indiana. And for preteens and teenagers, we had a gasoline-powered Plymouth Prowler from Midwestern Industries of New Paris, Indiana.

Test drivers included 18-month-old twins Jake and Alex Nevin, six-year-olds Madeline Csere and Joey Kiley, 12-year-old Lee Warner, who is the brother of road warrior Robin Warner, and Charley Betzig, also 12, a neighbor of the Cseres’. Okay, kids, start your engines.

    TRIPS: Car games for kids

Today s installment of Creating Really Awesome Free Trips is by one of my real life friends, Cassie! Cassie and I went to high school together! She s got 2 cute kiddos and 7 awesome car games for kids to keep em happy and healthy on road trips!

Hi! I am Cassie, from the pint-sized traveler . I am beyond thrilled, and honored, to be here on C.R.A.F.T. today! With summer just around the corner, I am sharing some pretty awesome (almost) free activities for your kiddos while traveling in the car. Some are from my blog, some are tried-and-true, and some are new!

    #1 Piles of Pipe Cleaners!

Having a bounty of pipe cleaners available, is always a smart thing! They are very cheap (I found them in packs of 100 for 2.99, but then used Mr. 40% off coupon to drop them down to 1.79!) There are so many different uses for them from stringing beads and making bracelets, to creating stick figures honestly, the list goes on! However, today I am suggesting you take these bad boys and put those Are We There Yet. s to rest! Decide how long you will drive each day (an estimate is just fine) and gather enough pipe cleaners for each kid to have one for every hour you drive (decide what works best for your children and their age group perhaps you need 30 minute increments). Before you head out, get the car prepped by making a loop around the car handle on the ceiling with string and running it across to the other side above their heads. Explain before you take off, that every hour (or half hour) you will hand out a pipe cleaner to each of them. Instruct them to make a loop with the pipe cleaner around the string (like so!)

I first have our kids string cheap pony beads on the pipe cleaner (leaving enough room to twist the loop shut) to use up extra time and keep those fingers busy. At the end of the day you can all count the hours and remove the pipe cleaners so you can start fresh again!

    #2 Felt Rules!

This is another super steal of a deal (0.25 per 8 11 sheet of felt) and has many uses! This is a tried-and-true busy bag, but we are simply going to amp it up with more scenes and cut-outs and attach it to a clip board! I suggest cutting out 8-10 different scenes and placing each one in a separate zippered sandwich or quart size bag and labeling it, and then throw them all into a gallon sized one! I glued a whole felt sheet to a clip board, and then clipped the ziplock bag under the clip. This gives a nice hard surface to play on and keeps everything well contained!

Here are some great scene ideas to get you started:

    * House (create the different parts such as windows, door, roof, flowers, trees, etc.)

    * Faces (the sky is the limit! Cut a head and then go wild frowns, smiles, teeth, big eyes, small eyes, freckles, lashes, noses you got it!)

    * The States! (older kids can actually create a map of the United States!)

*Ice Cream Cone (and all the flavor options!)

    * Animals (include whiskers, tailed, spots, etc.)

    * Ocean (fish, seaweed, bubbles, waves)

    #3 Travel Log!

Older kids are the natural fit for keeping a journal of sorts, but don t forget the little ones too! They can draw pictures, cut out pictures from magazines and travel brochures (if you sign up with your destination s visitors bureau, you can request free catalogs!) and scribble as well! Assign a portion of the day to writing when the car should be quiet. Decide what is best for your family, perhaps the kids need a prompt from you (Today I have seen the color ______ the most because ) or maybe something more traditional (The best thing I ve seen on the road today was ) or maybe letting them write wherever their heart takes them is better. Aside from the actual writing and coloring spending time, I would first have them create their journal! There are many ways to tackle this, from free to inexpensive. The free approach (and my favorite!) is to take an old cereal box or other cardboard piece and cut out a front and back for the book. Cut large pieces of white paper out and glue them on the cardboard to create spaces to write and color.

(here I created an area for the title as well as the main picture)

Using white or lined paper, cut them down to the size of the cover (or fold) and then staple! You can also use binder rings if you have those lying around, or even paper clips! Super simple and free! If you don t want to make it, check your dollar store for 0.99 journals.

Of course make sure crayons, pencils, stickers, glue sticks, safety scissors and other embellishments are close by (I generally empty my junk drawers in my craft room into small plastic containers with lids, and let them go at it!)

    #4 Car Printables!

What would a road trip be without a rousing game of roadside bingo or the license plate game! There are so many awesome blogs and sites to hit up for free printables! Here are a few links to check out! License Plate Game (care of LivingOnVacation.org ), Road Trip Bingo (care of Free-Puzzles.Net ), and our family s FAVORITE Slug Bug. (care of Not Inadequate )

    #5 Books on Tape!

Yes, many libraries lend books on tape for free, but not all. If you can t get your hands on free books on tape, please save you $15 and create your own! Small kids will love hearing your voice coming from the speaker, and older kids can relax their eyes and listen to you tell them a story (with out you having to even be awake! UNLESS you are driving. In that case, please keep your eyes OPEN!) You don t need fancy recording equipment to make this happen, for some just their phone will work! The first thing I suggest however, is to determine which car you will be driving and what features it has (CD player, USB Port, MP3 plug-in?) If you can plug your smart phone in to play through the car s speakers, then perhaps a simple voice note is the easiest! Of course you won t be able to record a novel on here, but a shorter children s book should be just fine. If you don t have space on your phone for this or can t sync it up with your car, then record the story onto a CD. Record new stories as well as favorites! And don t forget to bring the books along!

    #6 Twizzler Writing

With this one, let them play with their food! Grab a package of the rope twizzler (pull and peel), not the traditional braid, and using a lap desk, or other hard surface, have them practice their letters! You can print and laminate (or stick in a ziplock bag!) large letters for the younger ones to trace. Call out words of things you say as you drive past and have the older ones spell the words out. The best part is clean up is a synch and a tasty snack ?

    #7 Fun Snacks!

You may not normally allow your children to eat in the car, but on any road trip, those rules MUST go out the window! You can keep the mess to a minimum by not bringing in messy foods to start with, but don t bother trying to keep the spills from happening, because they always will! Instead, organize it! On our Great 30 Day Road Trip last summer I packed these fabulous boxes ($1.99 at your local craft store just bead organizers!)

Try to stay clear of tons of sugary treats that won t stick with them long and will cause mood crashes. While this is not an activity, you will be amazed how long it keeps them busy! Another twist would be to package each snack in their own ziplock bags and then have the kids sort them into their own boxes. However, this would be a sure way for added mess, so do whatever won t make you too crazy. We live in our car, so a little mess doesn t bother me one bit! You can also bring along stickers for the kids to use to decorate their boxes (don t forget to get out the paint pens before to personalize their boxes!)

I hope we have inspired you to pack many, many frugal activities before you hit the road! Just remember, do not show all your tricks at once. Try to stagger the activities so that you never run out of a trick to pull from your bag when those Are We There Yet. s start whining at you!

    Happy Travels!
