When To Buy Rental Car Insurance

Do You Need Rental Car Insurance?

A common question for drivers who are traveling is whether they need to purchase additional car insurance for their rental cars. Often, no additional car insurance coverage is necessary because your rental car is already covered by either your credit card or current insurance coverage.

It is important, however, to verify that you are covered and to find out about any additional rental car insurance coverage that you might need.

Am I Already Covered?

Your regular auto insurance policy likely already covers you if you are renting a car. If you live in a state that requires liability insurance and you cause an accident while driving your rental car, liability insurance would cover the costs of damages to the other car and injuries to the other car’s driver and passengers.*

This coverage also is likely to extend to additional drivers, although laws vary by state. In New York and California, for example, licensed spouses are covered to drive the rental car. You can also list additional drivers on the rental agreement, although companies may charge an extra daily fee.

* Be aware that your regular insurance policy may not be valid if you are renting a car for business use.

Does My Credit Card Cover Me?

Many credit cards offer some coverage for rental cars (if the card is used to pay for the rental). Be sure to check the fine print; the card may only offer collision coverage, which covers property damage but not costs associated with injuries.

In many cases, the credit card company may offer additional rental car insurance (e.g, to pay for injuries) for a fee. The rates may be reasonable, but be sure that you do not pay extra for coverage that you already have from another source.

If your health insurance, for example, covers any injuries that you sustain in an auto accident, you would not need to purchase personal accident insurance for your rental from your credit card company. You may, however, need to purchase supplemental liability insurance to cover damages to another driver if you cause the accident (if your existing liability coverage doesn’t include rental cars).

Before you rent a car, call your credit card company to find out exactly what is covered.

Be sure to call each time you are about to rent a car to make sure that your coverage has not changed, since credit card auto insurance policies tend to change frequently. Also, verify that the coverage limit is high enough to adequately protect you.

Make sure you fully understand your coverage, so that you are not coerced into buying insurance you don’t need at the rental car office.

What Options Are Offered by Rental Car Companies?

Rental car companies tend to offer these optional types of rental car insurance coverage that you can purchase when you pick up your car. Keep in mind that you may already have these kinds of coverage from your car insurance, health insurance, or credit card company.

  • Collision damage waiver – When you’ve purchased this waiver, the rental car company will not charge you for a damaged or stolen vehicle.
  • Supplemental liability protection – Electing this insurance will ensure you’re covered for costs to others in an accident you cause in the rental.
  • Personal accident insurance – This coverage will pay for injuries or death of the driver and passengers of your rental car.
  • Personal effects coverage – This coverage reimburses you for stolen personal items while renting the car.

Does Rental Reimbursement Coverage Pay for Damages in a Rental?

Rental reimbursement coverage is entirely different from rental insurance. Rental reimbursement refers to a type of car insurance that is optional. This coverage allows for reimbursement for the cost of renting a car only when your own car is in the shop due to damage from an accident.

Rental reimbursement coverage does not pay for damages resulting from an accident in a rental car.

When you are driving a rental car and you are in an accident, liability insurance can cover the costs of repairs to the car and property, and medical bills for injuries to the other cars’ occupants, with collision coverage paying for the cost of damages to the rental car. However, you need to ensure your current liability and collision coverages apply to rental cars. If they don’t, your next step should be to check to see what your credit card covers (see below).

What Should I Do Before Renting a Car?

Step 1: Contact your car insurance company to make sure you understand your policy and what is covered when you rent a car.

Step 2: Contact your credit card company to find out what coverage it provides.

Step 3: Finally, bring your car insurance declaration page so you can present it to the rental company if any questions come up when you pick up your car.

    Auto Insurance

There are more options for renting a car than ever before—bricks-and-mortar, peer-to-peer and membership-based car sharing services. While this means more choice for renters, it also creates more questions about insurance coverage. Use these tips to properly insure yourself when renting a car, and avoid wasting money on duplicative coverage.

If you’re looking to rent a car, depending on your needs and location, there are a number of alternatives—the traditional brick-and-mortar companies, peer-to-peer car services and car sharing programs—each with its own insurance parameters. It pays to understand your existing coverage first, and then look at your rental insurance options.

No matter what company or what kind of company you’re renting from, the most important step is to read and understand the car rental or car sharing agreement. Most companies clearly state what is covered as well as the supplemental coverage that can be purchased. If you don’t understand, have the rental or car sharing company representative walk you through.

Before you enter an agreement with any type of rental service, maximize use of the insurance you’re already paying for and avoid paying for duplicate insurance.

If you own or lease a car and/or have homeowners insurance, call your insurer to first check the following:

    • How much coverage you currently have on your own car – In most cases, whatever auto insurance and deductibles you have on your own car would apply when you rent a car (providing you are using the rental car for recreation and not for business).
    • If you still have collision or comprehensive – If you dropped these coverages on your own car as a way to save money on your car insurance, you may not be covered if your rental car is stolen or damaged. Insurance rules vary by state, so it is best to check with your insurance professional for the specifics of your policy.
    • If you are covered for administrative fees, loss of use or towing charges – Check to see whether your insurance company pays for—or provides a rider for—additional fees.
    • Whether your homeowners or renters insurance covers the loss of possessions – These policies (not your car insurance) generally cover your belongings if they are damaged or stolen out of your vehicle.

The credit card you use to rent a car may also provide some insurance. Though coverage is likely to be limited—for example, it may only cover the deductible if you make a claim—it’s worth knowing what protections it will provide.

    • Know that benefits differ – Insurance coverage can depend on the company or bank that issues the card or even the level of card. For example, a platinum card may offer more robust coverage than a green card. If you have more than one card, you may want to compare what insurance they offer for car renters.
    • Contact the credit card issuer to find out what they cover – If you are depending on a credit card for insurance protection, ask the company or bank that issued the card to send you their coverage information in writing.
    • Credit card insurance benefits are usually secondary – That is, they will kick in after your personal insurance policy or the insurance coverage offered by the rental car company are utilized.

Brick-and-mortar car rental companies are generally found at airports, train stations or other locations where travelers converge. These traditional rental companies allow you to simply reserve or select a vehicle from one of the many generally available on any given day. The insurance you’ll be offered is fairly standard (though, like all car insurance, it varies by state).

Depending on what type of auto and/or homeowners insurance you carry, you may want to consider some of the insurance coverage provided by the rental car company. While auto insurance regulations, costs and coverage will vary by state and insurer, consumers renting from traditional companies can generally choose from the following coverages:

    • Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) – Also referred to as a collision damage waiver, an LDW is not technically an insurance product—it is designed to relieve or “waive” renters of financial responsibility if their rental car is damaged or stolen. Waivers may also provide coverage for “loss of use,” in the event the rental car company charges for the time a damaged car cannot be used because it is being fixed, as well as towing and administrative fees. The LDW may become void if the accident was caused by speeding, driving on unpaved roads or driving while intoxicated. However, if you carry comprehensive and collision auto insurance, you may already be covered for damage to a rental car.
    • Liability Insurance – By law, rental companies must provide the state required minimum amount of liability insurance coverage—often this does not provide enough protection. If you carry your own auto insurance and have opted for higher liability limits (which is recommended), you’ll be adequately covered. Non car-owners who are frequent renters have the option of purchasing a non-owner liability policy, which can provide the additional liability needed.
    • Personal accident insurance – This covers the driver and passengers for medical and ambulance bills for injuries caused in a car crash. Whether or not you should consider this depends on your health insurance and the personal injury protection (PIP) provided by your auto insurance, which will likely cover medical expenses.
    • Personal effects coverage – This provides insurance protection for the theft of items from a rental car. Consider this if you do not carry homeowners or renters insurance to cover this type of loss.

As motorists in the UK, and especially as a young driver, the cost of our insurance can be affected in a large way by our choice of vehicle. While new drivers who have just passed their tests may have big ideas about their first car, many of the more desirable rides will be priced out of their budgets. As with all insurance, the insurers try to establish the risk level of a claim being made. Factors which increase the likelihood of a claim will most likely increase the cost of the monthly premium/cost to you. Being a driver of a fast, powerful car, or a car with a high repair cost, makes you more likely to cause an expensive collision.

This effect is even higher with young drivers who haven’t had the time to build up a no claims discount. The result? Considering your car insurance group before buying your car is a very wise move. Cars in lower insurance groups will, everything else being equal, tend to cost less to insure. Car Insurance Guide

Most kinds of insurance are optional, but car insurance is one of the few that is required by law. If a car is driven on the road, it must have car insurance according to UK law. The only exception is if a car has a Statutory Off-Road Notice, which means that by law the car can’t be driven on the road, but also doesn’t require insurance.

UK car insurance comes in three main categories:

Third party: This is the minimum legal requirement for car insurance. It’s a basic form of insurance that covers the costs of any damage incurred while driving. For example, if a driver is in an accident with another car, the at-fault driver is liable for damage to the other person’s car, and for any medical expenses they incur as a result of the accident. Note, however, that the insurance does not cover the costs of damage to the car belonging to the driver who is deemed at fault.

Third party, fire, and theft: This is similar to third party insurance, but also covers the cost of replacing a car if it’s stolen or damaged in a fire.

Comprehensive cover: Provides everything as above, but also covers costs for repairing the car belonging to an at-fault driver.

Depending on the insurer and the policy, the driver may be covered when driving other cars, including hired cars. Some policies also allow the policyholder to name other drivers to be covered when driving their car.

Car insurance providers offer coverage for a wide range of special groups, including older and younger drivers and others. For example:

    • Younger drivers typically pay higher premiums, because this demographic tends to get in more accidents. As a result, for drivers under 25 it may be worthwhile to get a policy targeted to this age group.
    • Older drivers over the age of 50 may also benefit from getting a specialist policy.
    • Poor driving record: It’s typically difficult for people with poor driving records, to get affordable insurance. Choosing a specialist insurance provider can help with this.
    • Business and commercial drivers typically need specialist insurance.

These options add convenience, but will increase the cost of insurance:

    • Breakdown cover provides roadside assistance when the policyowner’s car breaks down.
    • Legal expenses are covered if they arise as a result of compensation claims made as a result of a vehicle-related accident.
    • Windscreen cover is typically included in comprehensive policies but can be purchased as an add on for third party cover.

Car insurance groups are what insurance providers use to determine a driver’s basic premium level. Insurance groups are numbered from 1 to 50, and each make and model of car is categorised into a specific group based on a wide range of factors. The lower a car’s group, the lower the driver’s premiums tend to be. Factors that affect the group a car is in could include its price, performance level, the cost and availability of spare parts, and the average time required for repairs.

In order to compare car insurance online, it could be good to look at a number of different factors to get the best prices and the best level of coverage. A person could start by comparing like with like, as well as comparing different kinds of policies. For example, comparing third party policies from various insurers, and also comparing the different policy levels offered by the same insurer. Making the comparison this way may make it easy to see what the best deals are. Sometimes, depending on the car the driver’s personal circumstances, comprehensive cover might be almost as cheap as third party insurance.

    Minimising Premium Costs

One possible way to get cheap car insurance could be by owning a car in one of the lowest premium groups. This typically means owning a newer car. When it comes to calculating premiums, insurance groups may not be the full story, however. Insurance companies might use other information, such as age, gender, and driving record, when they calculate premiums. Home address could also taken into consideration; for example, if a driver lives in a high-crime area, they might pay more as insurers consider the car more likely to be damaged or stolen.

Some ways to reduce premium costs might include:

    • Drivers that avoid making claims may benefit from a premium discount; the discount typically gets higher with consecutive claim-free years.
    • The no-claims discount may often be transferred to a new insurance provider if a driver finds a better deal elsewhere.
    • The no-claims discount doesn’t necessarily prevent an insurer from increasing premium costs. It’s a discount applied to whatever the premium is, so the premium could increase even if the discount remains the same.
    • Most policies have two separate excess amounts. One is set by the insurer and is an integral part of the policy. The second is one that the driver may set themselves. To reduce their premium a driver could opt to set this excess higher, but it does mean they tend to pay more out of pocket if they have to make a claim. And since the excess has a mandatory per-policy component, there could be an excess to pay on every claim regardless of how high the voluntary excess is set.
    • Car modifications of any kind could result in a premium increase, so it may be good idea for a driver to check with their insurer before adding any mods.
    • Paying premiums annually rather than monthly could reduce the cost significantly.

What is Car Hire Excess Insurance?

Car hire companies often charge an excess for damage caused to the car whilst you’re behind the wheel even if it’s not your fault. This can be upwards of £1000 meaning if you’re involved in an accident, you’ll have to pay a contribution to cover the damage.

With an annual car hire excess insurance policy from insurance4carhire, you’re able to reclaim the excess you’d have to pay in the unfortunate event of an accident or your car being stolen.

What’s more, with our car hire excess insurance policies, you could pay less and get more cover compared to buying the excess at the car hire desk. Our car hire insurance policies will reimburse you for charges as a result of damage to the undercarriage, misfueling, towing and so much more.

    How does it work?

    1. Choose the car hire excess insurance policy suitable for your destination and trip period
    2. Buy your policy up to 364 days in advance right up to before you go to collect the car
    3. Politely decline any excess insurance or damage waiver offered to you at the car hire desk

    How do I claim?

We operate independently from car hire companies. If an accident occurs, you will have to pay your car hire company excess but claiming your money back from us is stress free. Here’s how:

    1. Make sure you keep all receipts given to your by your car hire company
    2. Phone or email us to let us know you’d like to claim (or post your claim to us) within 31 days
    3. We aim to pay your money into your account within 15 days of receiving your claim
