Paperwork Required to Sell a Car in Georgia

So, you’ve got a car you want to sell in Georgia. How exactly do you go about the process? We’ll boil down some of the essentials right here!

Selling a Vehicle in Georgia

Here we’ll be focusing on the state regulations for selling a car in Georgia, but obviously there’s a lot of groundwork to be laid before you actually transfer ownership. After you’ve assessed your vehicle’s market value and condition, you’ll decide how you want to go about advertising it to potential buyers. You’ve never had more options in terms of the channels you can use, from online marketplaces to time-tested classifieds.

If you’d like to review some basic tips for selling a car, browse through our helpful Guide to Selling Your Car.

Once you’ve identified a buyer, the official title transfer is a matter of paperwork. Once the required documents are complete, your car will have a new owner.

Required Documents for GA Car Sellers

To successfully sell your car in Georgia, you and the buyer will need to sign off on several documents:

  • The vehicle title. unless your car’s exempt from holding a title. You can find out more about Georgia’s title requirements at the state’s Department of Revenue website.
    • If your car doesn’t need a title, you can provide its certificate of origin or the bill of sale (see below).
  • A Georgia bill of sale. The Georgia Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division provides a downloadable Bill of Sale (Form T-7) that you can use for this document, but you can also craft your own. If you do, remember to include the following information:
    • The date of the transfer of ownership.
    • The agreed-upon cost of the vehicle.
    • Your name and address. as well as those of the buyer.
    • Your car’s year, make, model, vehicle identification number (VIN), and odometer reading (see below).
    • A list of any liens presently on the car.
  • A statement of the buyer’s agreement to purchase .

Georgia’s odometer disclosure requirements exempt certain vehicles from mileage declarations during a title transfer. For more information, see our Title Transfers in Georgia page.

If you’re not presently in Georgia and are directing a member of your family to sell your car for you, you’ll give them limited power of attorney so they can oversee the title transfer. The Georgia DOR’s Motor Vehicle Division offers a Limited Power of Attorney/Motor Vehicle Transactions (Form T-8) at its website.

Duplicate Georgia Title

If your car title is damaged or missing, you can obtain a duplicate title by submitting the following paperwork to the Georgia DOR:

You can find out more about duplicate titles (including the protocol for cases where the original title was assigned to you rather than issued in your name) on our Replacing a Lost Title in Georgia page.

Salvage Titles

Applying for a title for a car that’s been wrecked and rebuilt requires its own special process in Georgia. Along with the standard Motor Vehicle Title/Tag Application (Form MV-1), additional documentation such as the Request for Inspection of a Rebuilt Motor Vehicle (Form T-22R) and a Labor and Parts Certification (Form T-129) must be completed and submitted.

Vehicle History Reports

The savvy purchaser of a used car will obtain a vehicle history report to learn more about the car’s background, including details on past accidents, damage, and theft.

You can also order your own vehicle history report in order to gain the trust of potential buyers and hopefully sell your car faster.

What to do if you get hives.

April 23, 2012 by Dr. John Overholt | 7 Comments

I see lots of cases of hives and I m often struck by how many have been previously seen in an emergency department for control of their outbreaks. I also frequently see patients for evaluation of hives when their rash is something altogether different. So, dear reader, here is a quick primer on what to do if you get hives.

First, make sure it s hives. Hives can vary somewhat in appearance, but generally are dime sized to half-dollar sized and have a red rim with a clear center. If you get a bunch of them together, called coalescence, they can look much bigger. Hives are itchy. Some people say they burn a bit, but most describe intense itching. The key factor in figuring out if a rash is hives is duration. Individual hives only last minutes to a few hours. Outbreaks can go on much longer, but the individual spots are fairly short lived. If it s in the same spot for a day or more, it s not hives.

Although allergic reactions can cause hives, most hives are non-allergic. If you have a true food allergy, medication allergy, or bee sting allergy and you have an obvious exposure to your trigger, then you need to follow your own doctor s advice on immediate treatment and seeking medical care. If you break out in hives and experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, tongue swelling, or lightheadedness and dizziness, then you need to seek immediate medical help as these can be signs of anaphylaxis. If, however, you experience strictly skin symptoms, you can usually treat yourself with simple antihistamines.

Benadryl works well, but it is very sedating and also only lasts a few hours. I usually recommend cetirizine or fexofenadine, which used to be known as Zyrtec and Allegra, respectively. They are both effective, low- or non-sedating, and last all day. Be aware that cetirizine makes about 15% of people sleepy. I have found loratidine to be less effective than the others.

When treating your hives, remember a couple of things. First, it takes an hour or so for the antihistamines to get in your system after you swallow them. Don t expect them to work in fifteen minutes. Second, you may have to take a larger than recommended dose. Antihistamines are dosed for the nose and the amount of histamine released in a hives outbreak can be much larger than that released in a sneezing attack. If one cetirizine or fexofenadine hasn t worked in an hour, take a second one. If your hives resolve, you might want to consider continuing a long-acting antihistamines once or twice a day for two weeks to fend off any recurrent bouts.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your representation during my lawsuit. While this was a tiring process I appreciate your input and your guidance through the process, Mr. Powell I truly thank you for all that you have done… your knowledge brought a great deal of comfort.

  • Lana A., Atlanta GA

I’ve been in two car accidents. Mr. Hinton represented me and was so kind and so compassionate. He was doing his job and doing it well, he was very thorough while he also has the best manners of any lawyer I’ve seen plus some. He has huge heart. That’s not like the lawyers you see on T.V. You can tell that he’s going to fight for his clients in a tactful way. I would highly recommend him to anyone. He has put the meaning of being a lawyer into a whole different context

  • Janet, Atlanta GA

After the slip and fall incident that happened to me, I was in pain from my injuries and worried about how I was going to get my health and finances back on track. I knew that I needed to reach out to a lawyer so I began searching. I was put in touch with Mr. Powell at Hinton Powell law firm. From the moment Mr. Powell contacted me, I felt a sense of relief knowing that someone was in my corner and advocating for my best interests. Mr. Powell was consistently honest with me and comforting to me as I dealt with the aftermath of the incident. He advised me on what steps I should take and what to expect as the case unfolded. His office staff was attentive and thorough throughout the process, and Mr. Powell worked hard to get me the best possible settlement. I owe a great deal of gratitude to Mr. Powell for his diligence and good character throughout.

    Georgia RN to BSN Programs

Registered nurses in Georgia can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with the above average pay rates and low cost of living. To further increase their occupational status they can pursue their BSN degree while working as a registered nurse.

Many programs are currently being offered throughout Georgia to educate RNs up to a Bachelor s level. Nurses who have a BSN degree receive preference from healthcare employers and are also qualified to handle a wider range of job positions than less educated RNs. Since the term RN to BSN explicitly states that it is intended for current registered nurses, most of these programs offer flexible class schedules that fit around student s existing work schedules.

RN to BSN courses build upon the foundation that incoming students have in the practice of nursing. The course work is designed to deepen the working knowledge of registered nurses and cover topics related to the scientific aspects involved with nursing. Upon completion graduating nurses should be better educated and able to provide the highest level of care to their patients.

    Culinary Arts

    Continued

The program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for the culinary profession. Learning opportunities develop academic, occupational, and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes a combination of culinary theory and practical application necessary for successful employment. Graduates who are current practitioners will benefit through enhancement of career potential. Entry-level persons will be prepared to pursue diverse opportunities in the culinary field as cooks, bakers, or caterers/culinary managers. The occupational trend is projected to increase by 18% through 2018.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pastry Chefs are in-demand and make excellent salaries. Payscale.com reports that the average salary for Pastry Bakers is just over $40,000 per year. In 2008, Specialty Chefs represented more than 8,900 jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts job opportunities will increase by nearly 15% in the coming decade adding 138,000 jobs by 2016. In addition, the BLS indicates highly skilled bakers should be especially in demand because of growing demand for specialty products.

The city of Savannah, Ga. the largest city and the county seat of Chatham County, is known as America’s first planned city and attracts millions of visitors, who enjoy the city’s architecture and historic structures. Today, Savannah’s downtown area is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States (designated in 1966). The locals and millions of visitors create a high demand for the food industry.

In Georgia, bakers earn a median annual salary of $23,190 as of May 2011, according to the BLS. Based on Department of Labor statistics the mean average salary in the Savannah area is $22,830 as of May 2011.

    Georgia Bankruptcy Exemptions

    Updated May 20, 2016

Like other states, Georgia has its own exemptions that you can use when you file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Exemptions are laws that protect the value of your belongings, such as your home, car, or retirement accounts from creditors or the bankruptcy trustee. The Georgia bankruptcy exemptions determine which property you can keep in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and play a role in how much you repay your creditors in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

Federal Bankruptcy Exemptions Not Available in Georgia

In addition to Georgia s own bankruptcy exemptions, there are a set of federal bankruptcy exemptions established by federal law. In some states, you are permitted to choose between the state exemptions and the federal bankruptcy exemptions, but Georgia is not one of those states. If you file bankruptcy in Georgia, you must use the Georgia state exemptions.

There are also a number of federal non-bankruptcy exemptions that you may use in addition to the Georgia bankruptcy exemptions. The federal non-bankruptcy exemptions protect items such as federal and military retirement accounts and disability benefits.

Married Couples May Double Georgia Exemptions

If you file a joint bankruptcy with your spouse in Georgia, you and your spouse can double your exemption amounts. This means you may each utilize the whole exemption amount. However, you may only claim an exemption for property that belongs to you. For example, you cannot use your vehicle exemption to protect your spouse s car (unless you are a joint owner of the vehicle).

For more information about bankruptcy exemptions, including how they work, which state exemption system applies to you, and special homestead exemption rules, see Nolo s Bankruptcy Exemptions topic page.

Special Note: Georgia s Bankruptcy-Only Exemption System

Georgia, along with several other states, has an exemption scheme that applies only to bankruptcy and insolvent intestate estates (meaning you can t use them against creditors that try to take your property outside of bankruptcy or intestacy). The law is split as to whether bankruptcy-only exemption schemes are constitutional. Some courts have held the law is constitutional, while others have held that it is not.

The majority of bankruptcy courts allow debtors to use bankruptcy-only exemption schemes, but you should consult with an attorney to determine what exemptions are permitted in your local bankruptcy court. (You can find a local bankruptcy attorney here .)

    Confirming Exemptions

This list includes many of the commonly-used bankruptcy exemptions available in Georgia, but there are other exemptions available to protect your property. In addition, Georgia may have changed the amounts since this list was last reviewed in 2012.

The Georgia Code is copyrighted, so you won t find it posted on the website of the Georgia Legislature. However, the Georgia Legislature website will refer you to the Georgia Code on LexisNexis, which you can visit at www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/gacode/Default.asp. to verify the current exemption amounts. Or you can visit a law library and see the Code there. (To learn how to do library or online research, see Nolo s Legal Research Center ).
