Dollar rent a car

Chester, United Kingdom 1 forum post

#2 of 21

We have had exactly the same problem as Ed L – a $15 admin charge for a 75 cent toll that I know without a doubt that we paid. We were driving from Orlando Airport to the I-4 exit. I ve just taken a look at the route on Google Street View. The toll plaza with the 75 cent fee is blindingly obvious. There s a big Sun Pass sign over the centre lanes, and a very well-signposted cash lane exit to the right. It would be impossible to miss, and I clearly remember going into the cash lane (as we did each and every time we approached a toll).

Phoned Dollar to query the fee. They have said they will have to request a photo of the violation from the toll authority, and I need to ring back in four to six weeks. I now have to have this hanging over my head for at least another month. It is not the actual cost of the fine that I am annoyed about. It is the principle of it, and the fact that this seems to be a game that Dollar has been playing for a number of years now. (See tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g34515-i19-k2542… and http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=273768) I m not sure what else I will be able to do if they are actually able to somehow produce photographic evidence of me not paying a toll that I know I absolutely paid.

I regret hiring our rental car through Dollar. We were treated rudely by their representative at the airport (very aggressive attempt to rent us a toll pass, and an extensive argument about us being required to accept a $75 fee for a pre-paid tank of fuel), and now we get this extra bill through the post. Dollar Rent A Car was – and continues to be – the one negative in what was otherwise a fantastic trip to Florida. I would strongly advise others to go with another car hire company. I will certainly never use Dollar again.

Which car rental company is best?

There are numerous posts here with info about car rentals in Phoenix. Likely you are reading some reviews of the off-brand rental companies. Stick with the majors, such as Hertz, Avis, National, Thrifty, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, and you re less likely to have problems. It also helps to join a frequent renter club with a car rental company: Hertz – #1 Club; National – Emerald Club; Avis – My Avis; etc.

There are really no hidden fees. Some companies will try to sell you insurance, which is likely covered by your own auto insurance and/or your credit card, and upgrades. I am pretty sure they all give estimates including all local taxes and fees. If you use a travel service such as Travelocity they do show all fees, however only for airport rentals.

Most of the rental companies have off-airport locations. Go to their web sites to search. Be aware that these off-airport locations are usually open hours such as 8-6 M-F and abbreviated hours Sat/Sun. That info will also be on the web site.

As far as who s best, that would be Hertz IMO, and worth a few extra dollars for the service and reliability.

Second Hand Car Dealers

Hi there

Firstly, welcome to the West Algarve. We are in Vila do Bispo, approx 20 mins from Lagos and have been here just over a year.

There are alot of cars advertised in the 123 which can be purchased in the supermarkets/ papalerias (spelling?) It is a free ads which translates ads to Portugues, English, German.

Having said that, we bought our car from a dealership on the 125. We had one problem with the car but they sorted it immediately.

Please be aware how expensive your car will be. My Vitara which is 10 years old cost 7,000 Euros, more than double the cost in the UK for a RHD Vitara of the same age.

All the best for your move.

Car hire in the USA – one way rental charge

Hi there,

I m looking to rent a car for a road trip in the USA. I m picking the car up in Seattle. and dropping off in LA. From the research I ve carried out thus far, this would almost certainly incur a one-way (drop off) charge of approximately $300 (differs from company to company). In addition, this fee has to be paid to the car rental office, and cannot be paid in advance as part of the booking.

As hlo says, if you book with an international third party consolidator (like HolidayAutos) then sometimes they have free one way deals on. They are usually certainly worth jumping on, and those same consolidators will normally quote for all the necessary insurances that you will need.

I, too, can tell you little about HA with respect to using them for USA car rentals. As you aren t the first person to mention them this week, and I ve not seen reference to them on this forum before, I have to guess that they are newly in the USA car rental market. I have used them several times, happily so, within Europe for car rentals.

Yes, they are higher than the US for sure. We have a Blue Book there that can be found on the internet. They don t reflect Thai prices however. I m also searching for a used car in Thailand and have found the Car Weekly guide sold for 60B here very useful. It s in Thai but the prices can be determined. For more detail you will need someone to translate- unless you have a Thai wife or gf.
