You can buy almost anything over the Internet including clothes, a pizza, music, a hotel room, even a car. And while most transactions are conducted lawfully and securely, there are instances when criminals insert themselves into the marketplace, hoping to trick potential victims into falling for one of their scams.

Today, the FBI s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) issued an alert about a specific type of cyber scam that targets consumers looking to buy vehicles online.

How the scam works. While there are variations, here s a basic description: consumers find a vehicle they like often at a below-market price on a legitimate website. The buyer contacts the seller, usually through an e-mail address in the ad, to indicate their interest. The seller responds via e-mail, often with a hard-luck story about why they want to sell the vehicle and at such a good price.

In the e-mail, the seller asks the buyer to move the transaction to the website of another online company .for security reasons .and then offers a buyer protection plan in the name of a major Internet company (e.g. eBay). Through the new website, the buyer receives an invoice and is instructed to wire the funds for the vehicle to an account somewhere. In a new twist, sometimes the criminals pose as company representatives in a live chat to answer questions from buyers.

Once the funds are wired, the buyer may be asked by the seller to fax a receipt to show that the transaction has taken place. And then the seller and buyer agree upon a time for the delivery of the vehicle.

What actually happens: The ad the consumer sees is either completely phony or was hijacked from another website. The buyer is asked to move from a legitimate website to a spoofed website, where it s easier for the criminal to conduct business. The buyer protection plan offered as part of the deal is bogus. And the buyer is asked to fax the seller proof of the transaction so the crooks know when the funds are available for stealing.

And by the time buyers realize they ve been scammed, the criminals and the money are long gone.

Red flags for consumers:

  • Cars are advertised at too-good-to-be true prices;
  • Sellers want to move transactions from the original website to another site;
  • Sellers claim that a buyer protection program offered by a major Internet company covers an auto transaction conducted outside that company s website;
  • Sellers refuse to meet in person or allow potential buyers to inspect the car ahead of time;
  • Sellers who say they want to sell the car because they re in the U.S. military about to be deployed, are moving, the car belonged to someone who recently died, or a similar story;
  • Sellers who ask for funds to be wired ahead of time.

Number of complaints. From 2008 through 2010, IC3 has received nearly 14,000 complaints from consumers who have been victimized, or at least targeted, by these scams. Of the victims who actually lost money, the total dollar amount is staggering: nearly $44.5 million.

If you think you ve been victimized by an online auto scam, file a complaint with IC3. Once complaints are received and analyzed, IC3 forwards them as appropriate to a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency.

As in Firefox, tabs are the preeminent interface hallmark of Thunderbird. I’m a real fan of tabs in email, which I appreciate the presence of in Yahoo’s webmail interface. It’s handy to have a search page, an email you’re composing, and your inbox all available at the same time from tabs. As with Outlook 2013, you get an Unread button to show only new emails in the inbox.

The application does support conversation view, showing a column of markers indicating which emails are part of conversations. Clicking on the marker expands the conversation, but Outlook makes conversations much clearer, with a triangular arrow indicating them and indentation when you expand them by clicking on the arrow.

You also get one of Outlook’s most useful features—the card-like notifications that pop up at the bottom of the screen when a new email arrives. It does this from its system tray icon, but unlike with Outlook, you can’t delete or flag the incoming emails right on the notification card. One thing you don’t get out of the “box” is automated vacation responses, but an add-on is available to add this capability.

Most mail services have their own spam filters, but Thunderbird, like Outlook, give you a local tool for eliminating unwanted emails. With its “adaptive junk mail controls,” you train Thunderbird to recognize mail you don’t want. Just check the icon in the Junk column next to any email or click the Junk button in the message preview pane to designate it as such. When you turn this feature on, the program marks suspected junk, but you can and should tell it if it’s marked good mail, to improve detection. I found that this mechanism did a good job of detecting worthless emails, but Outlook’s similar tool offered more control, with options for several levels of blocking, such as “only the most obvious junk” and using “safe lists only.”

Composing Email

When composing an email, you get all the formatting options you’d expect in any messaging software—the full choice of fonts, sizes, and colors for your text. But you can also choose plain text, even forcing that mode for domains you specify.

As with Outlook, I could be composing multiple emails in different windows at once. This is possible in some webmail clients, like Gmail, but less obvious and natural. Thunderbird saves your drafts automatically every 5 minutes by default; you can make this more or less frequent to taste.

Another convenience addressed by mail services like Outlook.com is large attachments. Thunderbird is in on this as well, with its Filelink feature. This kicks in whenever you try to attach a multi-megabyte file to an email. It uses file-hosting services Box. Ubuntu One and YouSendIt to accommodate the outsize files. You can specify the size limit that will trip your file attachment being uploaded to the service you set up with your credentials.

Basic Facts About Florida Manatees

The Florida manatee, Florida’s state marine mammal, is a large aquatic relative of the elephant. They are grayish brown in color and have thick, wrinkled skin on which there is often a growth of algae. Their front flippers help them steer, or sometimes crawl, through shallow water. They also have powerful, flat tails that help propel them through the water. Despite their small eyes and lack of outer ears, manatees are thought to see and hear quite well.

Like other grazing animals, Florida manatees play an important role in influencing the plant growth in the shallow rivers, bays, estuaries, canals and coastal waters they call home.

Diet

Manatees only have molars, which are used to grind food. As they wear down and fall out, they are replaced with new teeth.

Manatees are herbivores, with a diet consisting mostly of sea grasses and freshwater vegetation.

Population

Although there is no precise census of Florida manatees, today’s population is estimated at approximately 6,000 individuals.

Range Habitat

Manatees can be found in the warm waters of shallow rivers, bays, estuaries and coastal waters. Rarely do individuals venture into waters below 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Manatees take up residence primarily in Florida’s coastal waters during winter. Some individuals migrate as far north as the Carolinas or as far west as Louisiana in summer. Manatees have swum as far north as Cape Cod, Massachusetts in recent years.

Behavior

Manatees only breathe through their nostrils, since while they are underwater their mouths are occupied with eating! A manatee’s lungs are 2/3 the length of its body.

Well known for their gentle, slow-moving nature, manatees have also been known to body surf or barrel roll when playing. They normally rest and feed often. Manatees communicate by squealing under water to demonstrate fear, stress or excitement.

Reproduction

Calves are born weighing between 60 and 70 pounds and measuring about 3-4 feet long. They nurse underwater.

2014 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T

Although Volkswagen’s U.S. CEO can boast that 75 percent of all diesel-powered cars sold in America wear the VW crest, the really big volume in the mid-size-sedan segment comes from four-cylinder gasoline engines—more than four out of five Camry. Accord. and Altima models, and all Sonatas and Fusions. pack gas-fired four-holers. Despite investing big in a new U.S. assembly plant and refocusing the Passat as a larger, value-oriented proposition, the VW mid-sizer hasn’t counted a mainstream gas four among its powertrain choices for a while. That changes for 2014.

New Base Engine

This year, a 1.8-liter turbo four replaces the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-five as the new base engine (the TDI and V-6 Passats will still be offered). The transformation begins with the line-topping SEL Premium and will eventually expand to cover the S, SE, and Wolfsburg Edition trims later in the year. The force-fed 1.8-liter is the same Mexican-built gen-three EA888 four-cylinder that finds its way into Golfs and Jettas for 2014. The engine features a thin-wall crankcase and fewer counterweights for reduced mass, as well as smaller main bearings and reduced oil pressure to minimize friction. The exhaust manifold is integral to the cylinder head to allow the engine to warm up more quickly, and the turbo is smaller and spools up faster.

We drove a well-equipped, $31,715 SEL Premium automatic. Even though the Passat is several hundred pounds heavier than the Jetta, the 1.8-liter turbo’s 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque move the mid-size sedan smartly enough, with something near half-throttle summoning the turbine for duty. Telling is the torque curve of the 1.8T, which rises quickly to mesa from 1500 rpm to near the 6200-rpm horsepower peak. Contrast that to the peaks and valleys of the outgoing 2.5L five-cylinder, which proffers its 177 lb-ft of max torque at a relatively rev-happy 4250 and its 170 horsepower peak at 5700, making for a narrow sweet spot.

Ready to Rumble

The fuel-economy-optimized calibration of the six-speed torque-converter automatic keeps the Passat at low revs in the upper gears when cruising, during which there’s much less rumbly powertrain noise than in the Jetta 1.8T we recently drove. We’ll attribute that to more soundproofing and the fact that the engine doesn’t stay at 1200 rpm very long if road load increases. Climb even a slight grade or barely breathe on the throttle, and the automatic transmission downshifts, banishing the rumbling sound. Of course, you can use your own gearbox programming by tipping through the gears manually or by simply opting for a Passat with a five-speed manual—yes, the car will still be available with a stick even after the 1.8T completes its creep across the lineup.

One side benefit of the switch from inline-five to turbo inline-four is less weight on the nose. The current Passat is a former comparison-test champ ; although it subsequently fell to three newer cars, it remains excellent to drive. Hustle the big, roomy sedan down a twisty back road, and you’ll appreciate its balanced handling, good body control, and capable brakes. Segueing to 1.8T also means shifting from hydraulic to electrically boosted power steering, a fuel-economy move that usually means some loss in feedback, but VW has maintained most of the previous system’s low friction and linear feel.

Midyear, VW will introduce a Passat Sport model with a long list of cosmetic baubles. The full rundown: a black roof, black mirror caps, a special Urano Gray color, front fog lamps, a rear spoiler, aluminum pedal caps, sport seats, stainless-steel kick plates, paddle shifters, and 19-inch aluminum wheels. No word yet if a sport suspension or other performance upgrades are also a part of Sport content.

Casting a Wider Car-Net

VW is also introducing an OnStar-like connectivity system dubbed Car-Net. After a six-month free trial, the Verizon-based system will be available across all 2014 model lines at $199 a year for the full suite of services. Accessed via overhead buttons, Car-Net’s skill set includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, manual emergency calling, and live destination assist. Additionally, a number of other services such as remote door unlocking, service appointment scheduling, family guardian speed alert, and others can be selected via an iOS app (an Android-based app will debut later).

The most significant item of note for most shoppers, however, is likely to be the improvement in EPA fuel-economy ratings—the 1.8T is up 2 mpg city and 3 mpg highway over those of last year’s base 2.5-liter engine. At 34–35 mpg highway, the Passat 1.8T still doesn’t match highway-label leaders such as the Nissan Altima, Mazda 6. and Ford Fusion 1.6 EcoBoost, but it’s in the hunt. Taken with its improved manners and drivability, the volume Passat now finds itself in a position to snag more mid-size market share.

Know Your Own Credit Rating
This is an important step, because knowing what your personal credit report looks like will help you pick a lender that specializes in loans to people with similar credit ratings. If you have great credit, it will be much easier for you to find loans with lower interest rates and more agreeable terms and conditions. If you’re credit isn’t so great, you may find that you’ll only have luck with companies that base their business on auto loans to people with lower credit ratings.

Pre- Approval
It is best to get pre-approved before you start shopping for a car. There is nothing worse than finding the car of your dreams, only to learn that there is no way you can afford it. When you have gone through the pre-approval process, you know exactly how much car you can afford and adjust your shopping accordingly. Getting pre-approved does not lock you into one lender. It may end up that the dealer you buy the car from may be able to give you a better loan rate.

Car Type
Shop for an affordable used vehicle. Many manufacturers’ authorized dealers have used car lots offering inspected and warranted used vehicles. Two women have being dubbed Aldi’s biggest fans after travelling 70 miles and camping out for 48 hours ahead of the grand opening of a new store.

Carol Wright, 71, and Lyn Lakelin, 61, set off from their homes in Nottingham on Tuesday and spent a full two days in the car park before the store – in Lincolnshire – opened this morning.

The visit adds to the local hype over the £5million discount supermarket which the area manager claims has even prompted a surge in house prices in the area.

You can buy almost anything over the Internet including clothes, a pizza, music, a hotel room, even a car. And while most transactions are conducted lawfully and securely, there are instances when criminals insert themselves into the marketplace, hoping to trick potential victims into falling for one of their scams.

Today, the FBI s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) issued an alert about a specific type of cyber scam that targets consumers looking to buy vehicles online.

How the scam works. While there are variations, here s a basic description: consumers find a vehicle they like often at a below-market price on a legitimate website. The buyer contacts the seller, usually through an e-mail address in the ad, to indicate their interest. The seller responds via e-mail, often with a hard-luck story about why they want to sell the vehicle and at such a good price.

In the e-mail, the seller asks the buyer to move the transaction to the website of another online company .for security reasons .and then offers a buyer protection plan in the name of a major Internet company (e.g. eBay). Through the new website, the buyer receives an invoice and is instructed to wire the funds for the vehicle to an account somewhere. In a new twist, sometimes the criminals pose as company representatives in a live chat to answer questions from buyers.

Once the funds are wired, the buyer may be asked by the seller to fax a receipt to show that the transaction has taken place. And then the seller and buyer agree upon a time for the delivery of the vehicle.

What actually happens: The ad the consumer sees is either completely phony or was hijacked from another website. The buyer is asked to move from a legitimate website to a spoofed website, where it s easier for the criminal to conduct business. The buyer protection plan offered as part of the deal is bogus. And the buyer is asked to fax the seller proof of the transaction so the crooks know when the funds are available for stealing.

And by the time buyers realize they ve been scammed, the criminals and the money are long gone.

Red flags for consumers:

  • Cars are advertised at too-good-to-be true prices;
  • Sellers want to move transactions from the original website to another site;
  • Sellers claim that a buyer protection program offered by a major Internet company covers an auto transaction conducted outside that company s website;
  • Sellers refuse to meet in person or allow potential buyers to inspect the car ahead of time;
  • Sellers who say they want to sell the car because they re in the U.S. military about to be deployed, are moving, the car belonged to someone who recently died, or a similar story;
  • Sellers who ask for funds to be wired ahead of time.

Number of complaints. From 2008 through 2010, IC3 has received nearly 14,000 complaints from consumers who have been victimized, or at least targeted, by these scams. Of the victims who actually lost money, the total dollar amount is staggering: nearly $44.5 million.

Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, died Monday after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, her company said. She was 61.

“Sally lived her life to the fullest, with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, commitment and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless,” read a statement on the website of Sally Ride Science, a company she started to help teach students — particularly young women and girls — about science, math and technology.

Ride flew into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983 to become America’s first woman in space. She took a second trip aboard the same shuttle one year later.

The first woman in space was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who orbited the Earth 48 times in 1963.

“As the first American woman to travel into space, Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model,” President Barack Obama said soon after news of her death broke. “She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools. Sally’s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve, and I have no doubt that her legacy will endure for years to come.”

A Los Angeles native, Ride attended Stanford University, where she earned four degrees, including a doctorate in physics, according to NASA. She joined the agency as part of the class of 1978, the first to include women. Ride responded to an ad in the Stanford student newspaper and was selected from some 8,000 applicants.

She was assigned to a third flight, but that was scratched after the Challenger exploded shortly after lift-off in 1986, claiming the lives of seven crew members on board. Ride helped investigate that accident and later that of Space Shuttle Columbia, becoming the only person to serve on the commissions investigating both accidents. In 2003, the Columbia disintegrated during re-entry into the atmosphere, killing all seven crew members.

She served as a special assistant to the NASA administrator for long-range and strategic planning and was the first director of NASA’s Office of Exploration, according to her company.

After leaving the agency, Ride joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego, where she was a professor of physics and director of the California Space Institute. She was also the author of several books.

During a 2008 interview with CNN, Ride recalled what it felt like to look back on Earth, saying the view gave her a new perspective.

“You can’t get it just standing on the ground, with your feet firmly planted on Earth. You can only get it from space, and it’s just remarkable how beautiful our planet is and how fragile it looks,” she said.

Ride is survived by her partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy, her mother, her sister and other family members.

“Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism — and literally changed the face of America’s space program,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “The nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers and explorers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally’s family and the many she inspired. She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly.”

The Life of Sally Ride, First American Woman in Space

On July 23, 2012 Sally Ride died peacefully in her San Diego home of pancreatic cancer. She was 61 years old.

Sally Ride became a household name when she was selected for the STS-7 Space Shuttle mission in 1983. On June 18 of that year, Ride soared into space aboard the shuttle Challenger, becoming the first American woman astronaut. Ride was the third woman in space worldwide, following Soviet cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova in 1963 and Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982.

Ride was working on her PhD in astrophysics, having already secured bachelors degrees in physics and English, when she saw an advertisement in the Stanford University student newspaper. NASA was looking for astronauts, and this time positions were being made available not just to test pilots, but to scientists and engineers and women.

Ride applied. She along with 29 men and 5 other women were selected from the applicant pool of 8,000. She began training, learned to love flying, and helped design the Shuttle s robotic arm which she was able to deploy on her first flight.

Although Ride said the women s liberation movement in the United States had paved the way for her historic flight, Ride still had to endure joking, incredulity, and derision for daring to be both an astronaut and a woman. Reporters asked if she would cry on the job. Johnny Carson joked on The Tonight Show about delaying her launch because she would be off shopping. Ride was selected to be America s first woman in space because she was known to keep cool, even under such a stressful barrage. Although she kept her calm, Ride was still appalled by the misdirected attention. “It’s too bad this is such a big deal, she said at a NASA news conference, It’s too bad our society isn’t further along.”

Ride continued to feel that society should be further along throughout the rest of her career. She made public outreach a major priority, focusing on encouraging girls to become interested in science and in space. In 2001 she founded her own company, Sally Ride Science. to do just that. She also wrote children s science literature and initiated and directed NASA-funded educational programs such as EarthKAM and GRAIL MoonKAM.

Ride flew on two shuttle missions. The thing that I’ll remember most about the flight is that it was fun, she said after her first mission. “In fact, I’m sure it was the most fun I’ll ever have in my life.” After her 1984 flight, Ride was scheduled to form a crewmember of the STS 61-M mission. Training for that mission was halted when the Challenger exploded in January 1986, killing all seven crew members onboard .

Ride never made it to a third spaceflight. Instead, she served on the Presidential Commission investigating the Challenger accident. She would later serve on the commission investigating the 2003 Columbia accident. becoming the only person to serve on both commissions. Ride retired from NASA in 1987 for the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University. Two years later she became a professor of physics at the University of California San Diego and director of the California Space Institute. She served on innumerable space, science, and policy panels. Sally Ride was inducted into the National Women s Hall of Fame, the California Hall of Fame, the Aviation Hall of Fame, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. She was awarded the Jefferson Award for Public Service, the von Braun Award, the Lindbergh Eagle, the NCAA’s Theodore Roosevelt Award, twice awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal and in 2012 was honored with the National Space Grant Distinguished Service Award.

Ride had battled pancreatic cancer for seventeen months. An intensely private person, she had requested the information not be made public. Although NASA was aware of her illness, they honored her request to not share that information. Ride was survived by Tam O Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years, as well as her mother Joyce, sister Bear, niece Caitlin, and nephew Whitney.

In a statement, US President Obama said Dr. Ride had been a national hero and a powerful role model. “She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools,” he said. “Sally’s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve.”

Today, let’s try to find the first automobile. The University of Houston’s College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them.

T he automobile is one more invention that always seems to have just one more antecedent. The earliest steam-powered car we know about was finished as early as 1769 by French inventor Nicolas Cugnot. It was a large three-wheeled vehicle that moved at the speed of a walk and was meant to haul cannon. Earlier cars had been driven by springs and compressed air. Windmill-powered vehicles were made before them. Leonardo da Vinci sketched self-powered vehicles, and even Homer wrote about them.

So let’s limit our search to autos driven by internal combustion, and to ones actually built. We usually give that prize to Carl Benz. Benz championed the new internal-combustion engines, and he worked single-mindedly to create a car driven by one. He built a little three-wheeled car in 1885 and sold his first one two years later. He went into production with a four-wheeled model in 1890, and the Mercedes-Benz company is still with us.

But Benz wasn’t first. The French inventor de Rochas built an auto, and an engine to drive it, in 1862. Two years later, the Austrian Siegfried Markus began working on cars. His second one was rediscovered in 1950. It’d been bricked up behind a false wall in the cellar of a Viennese museum to hide it from the Germans. Markus was Jewish, and the Nazis had orders to destroy his car and any literature describing it. By the way, when the car was rediscovered, it could still be driven.

Markus’ story is especially poignant because, if the German Benz believed in the auto, he didn’t. In 1898, Markus was invited to be guest of honor at the Austrian Auto Club. He declined, calling the whole idea of the auto “a senseless waste of time and effort.”

The search for the earliest internal-combustion-driven auto might end in England in 1826. An engineer named Samuel Brown adapted an old Newcomen steam engine to burn gas, and he used it to power his auto up Shooter’s Hill in London. And here the whole priority question mires into hair-splitting definitions.

What we usually do in these cases is pretty arbitrary. We credit the first commercial success. That’s how Edison gets credit for the light bulb and Fulton for the steamboat. By that definition, Benz did invent the automobile.

Automotive historian James Flink notes that modern bicycles came into being just as Benz began his work, and they sparked the public demand for personal vehicles. But bicycle-makers were the same people who went on to make, first motorcycles, then airplanes. They sowed the demand and then veered off into another technology altogether. The people who took up automobiles were closer kin to the railway business. For a brief time, it looked as though the steam car might beat out internal combustion.

So, if we go back to star-crossed priority questions, we probably have to follow the thread of steam. And that leads, not to Benz, but to Cugnot, well over two centuries ago.

Buying Your Teenager s First Car: What You Need to Know #win #a #car

Remember your child’s first steps? They marked the beginning of a new era: Suddenly, you were no longer completely in control. If you think that was tough, just wait until you get your teenager their first car.

Aside from the obvious emotions — your fear, their extreme excitement — it’s a situation full of financial implications. Do you buy used or new? Who pays for what? How to get the best deal on insurance? The list goes on and on.

The experts weighed in on this family turning point.

Don’t Get It Twisted

“Having a car is not a birthright,” says Gail Cunningham, spokesperson for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, who raised four children. “Today’s teens seem to think that they should have a car waiting for them in the driveway when they return home from the Motor Vehicle Department with their driver’s license. If that’s right for your family, fine. But don’t be held hostage to peer pressure, and by that I mean from other families who are buying their teen a car.”

Secondly, she says, the teen should not be driving a better car than mom and dad. “Today’s high school parking lots look like a showroom with the latest models on display. What happened to handing down a family car from child to child?” she asks.

Thirdly, take advantage of a teachable moment. “The child should have some skin in the game,” says Cunningham, who recommends opening a “My First Car” savings account. Let your teen pile up money from summer jobs, allowance, holiday and birthday gifts and more. You can offer to match their money toward a down payment.

First on your list should be to research which makes most sense for you: buying new or used.

“Buying a new car is insurance against breakdowns and repairs, regardless of the age or experience of the driver,” says Bob Gritzinger, executive editor of AutoWeek.com.

While you’ll get peace of mind, you’ll also pay more for that luxury — though the prices of used cars have risen in recent months — as well as more for insurance.

“A first time driver doesn’t need a new car, but of course they want one,” says Lori Mackey, president of Prosperity4Kids. “The depreciation, probability of fender benders and the price tag [means new] is not the most logical way to go.”

Financially, you are almost always better off buying used, says Jack Nerad, executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book. “If you buy a certified pre-owned car you get the advantages of a new-car like warranty, and perhaps, better financing rates.”

How to pick the best car

Once you’ve settled on new versus old, then comes the tougher question: Which car? For starters, think about how often and how far the car will be driven typically. Will your child be driving back and forth from college over a great distance? Or will the car mostly be used locally?

Go over safety and crash-test information from organizations such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. suggests Gritzinger. Go through quality and reliability ratings from a measuring service such as J.D. Power and Associates .

While new cars will have all the latest safety bells and whistles, late-model used cars will have airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, and their power and performance won’t overwhelm new drivers, says Gritzinger.

Less power in the hands of a young driver is good, regardless of the model. “Choose a car with a responsive chassis — one with good handling, quick steering and great brakes — that takes advantage of a teen driver’s naturally quick reaction skills,” advises Gritzinger.

LeeAnn Shattuck, co-owner and chief car chick with Women’s Automotive Solutions, says to forget “image,” because it can come at a cost. “I see these young, inexperienced drivers in Mustangs, BMWs, and large SUVs. These automobiles are big, powerful and difficult to control for even experienced drivers. In the hands of a new driver, they can be deadly weapons.”

Cars that are too small are problematic too, as they do not protect passengers as well in a front-end crash, warns Shattuck. “Your teen is safest in a mid-sized sedan with a four cylinder engine, airbags and a good crash test rating.”

You also want to take into account what kind of gas mileage the car gets, and how much it will cost to maintain and insure.

To check mileage data, go to www.fueleconomy.gov. “This not only allows you to check and compare fuel economy ratings, but give a lot of good tips on how to maximize fuel economy in other ways that everyone can do. You can research vehicles back to 1987,” says Michael Rabkin, president, From Car to Finish. a vehicle research firm.

Some cars have safety systems geared specifically toward teen drivers. Hyundai Blue Link, for example, says Gritzinger, can alert the vehicle’s owner if someone has driven the car beyond preset boundaries or after certain hours.

Accept the fact that buying this car is going to take a lot of work, research. “Remember, there are a lot of scams and if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. My son will be driving in four months and he has been researching daily. He found a car that was priced extremely low. After digging deeper, he found out it was a ‘salvage’ car. I said ‘no,’ and he argued with me until I said, go research online what salvage means. No further conversation was necessary,” says Mackey.

Shop hard and test drive. “Don’t feel you have to buy the first car you see,” says Nerad, whose Kelley Blue Book is a great place to start, as well Edmunds.com .

Save on Insurance

You’ve found that perfect ride, but before your kid hits the road, there’s the little matter of insurance. A recent Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company found that households shell out an average of nearly $3,100 each year to allow their teens to drive, and some $800 of that, on average, goes for insurance, said Larry Thursby, vice president of auto product and pricing at Nationwide.

The least expensive way to insure your teen is usually to add him or her to your policy, says Chris Kissell, managing editor at Insurance.com. “However, this can be a money loser if your car is particularly expensive to insure. In those cases, it may make sense economically to have the teen buy a car that is less expensive to insure and to purchase his or her own policy.”

Capitalize on good grades. Many insurance companies offer “good student” discounts to top students. “This definition varies from insurer to insurer, but it usually is someone who has a B average, is on the honor roll, Dean’s list, or ranks in the upper 20% the class. The discount typically ranges between 10-15%,” says Erik Larson, president and founder of NextAdvisor.com, a consumer service review site. Nationwide, for example, offers a 25% reduction in premium for drivers under 21 who maintain a “B” average or better.

Beyond that, have your teen study up. A discount of 5% to 15% may be given to those who have recently taken a defensive driving course, says Larson.

Set the Tone

Before giving them a car, create a “Rules of the Road” contract for them to sign, suggests Cunningham. It can include such things as how many people can be in the car at once, who will pay for gas, insurance, maintenance, what happens to driving privileges if the child gets a ticket or has a wreck, and what time curfew is, among other things.

The last big big issue is how much weight parents have in the final decision about which car to buy. Says Mackey, “If you are paying 100% then you have 100% of the final decision. If your child is not in agreement, then bank the money until they have a certain amount to contribute.”

Remember your child’s first steps? They marked the beginning of a new era: Suddenly, you were no longer completely in control. If you think that was tough, just wait until you get your teenager their first car.

Aside from the obvious emotions — your fear, their extreme excitement — it’s a situation full of financial implications. Do you buy used or new? Who pays for what? How to get the best deal on insurance? The list goes on and on.

The experts weighed in on this family turning point.

Don’t Get It Twisted

“Having a car is not a birthright,” says Gail Cunningham, spokesperson for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, who raised four children. “Today’s teens seem to think that they should have a car waiting for them in the driveway when they return home from the Motor Vehicle Department with their driver’s license. If that’s right for your family, fine. But don’t be held hostage to peer pressure, and by that I mean from other families who are buying their teen a car.”

Secondly, she says, the teen should not be driving a better car than mom and dad. “Today’s high school parking lots look like a showroom with the latest models on display. What happened to handing down a family car from child to child?” she asks.

Thirdly, take advantage of a teachable moment. “The child should have some skin in the game,” says Cunningham, who recommends opening a “My First Car” savings account. Let your teen pile up money from summer jobs, allowance, holiday and birthday gifts and more. You can offer to match their money toward a down payment.

First on your list should be to research which makes most sense for you: buying new or used.

“Buying a new car is insurance against breakdowns and repairs, regardless of the age or experience of the driver,” says Bob Gritzinger, executive editor of AutoWeek.com.

While you’ll get peace of mind, you’ll also pay more for that luxury — though the prices of used cars have risen in recent months — as well as more for insurance.

“A first time driver doesn’t need a new car, but of course they want one,” says Lori Mackey, president of Prosperity4Kids. “The depreciation, probability of fender benders and the price tag [means new] is not the most logical way to go.”

Financially, you are almost always better off buying used, says Jack Nerad, executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book. “If you buy a certified pre-owned car you get the advantages of a new-car like warranty, and perhaps, better financing rates.”

How to pick the best car

Once you’ve settled on new versus old, then comes the tougher question: Which car? For starters, think about how often and how far the car will be driven typically. Will your child be driving back and forth from college over a great distance? Or will the car mostly be used locally?

Go over safety and crash-test information from organizations such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. suggests Gritzinger. Go through quality and reliability ratings from a measuring service such as J.D. Power and Associates .

While new cars will have all the latest safety bells and whistles, late-model used cars will have airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, and their power and performance won’t overwhelm new drivers, says Gritzinger.

Less power in the hands of a young driver is good, regardless of the model. “Choose a car with a responsive chassis — one with good handling, quick steering and great brakes — that takes advantage of a teen driver’s naturally quick reaction skills,” advises Gritzinger.

LeeAnn Shattuck, co-owner and chief car chick with Women’s Automotive Solutions, says to forget “image,” because it can come at a cost. “I see these young, inexperienced drivers in Mustangs, BMWs, and large SUVs. These automobiles are big, powerful and difficult to control for even experienced drivers. In the hands of a new driver, they can be deadly weapons.”

Cars that are too small are problematic too, as they do not protect passengers as well in a front-end crash, warns Shattuck. “Your teen is safest in a mid-sized sedan with a four cylinder engine, airbags and a good crash test rating.”

You also want to take into account what kind of gas mileage the car gets, and how much it will cost to maintain and insure.

To check mileage data, go to www.fueleconomy.gov. “This not only allows you to check and compare fuel economy ratings, but give a lot of good tips on how to maximize fuel economy in other ways that everyone can do. You can research vehicles back to 1987,” says Michael Rabkin, president, From Car to Finish. a vehicle research firm.

Some cars have safety systems geared specifically toward teen drivers. Hyundai Blue Link, for example, says Gritzinger, can alert the vehicle’s owner if someone has driven the car beyond preset boundaries or after certain hours.

Accept the fact that buying this car is going to take a lot of work, research. “Remember, there are a lot of scams and if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. My son will be driving in four months and he has been researching daily. He found a car that was priced extremely low. After digging deeper, he found out it was a ‘salvage’ car. I said ‘no,’ and he argued with me until I said, go research online what salvage means. No further conversation was necessary,” says Mackey.

Shop hard and test drive. “Don’t feel you have to buy the first car you see,” says Nerad, whose Kelley Blue Book is a great place to start, as well Edmunds.com .

Save on Insurance

You’ve found that perfect ride, but before your kid hits the road, there’s the little matter of insurance. A recent Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company found that households shell out an average of nearly $3,100 each year to allow their teens to drive, and some $800 of that, on average, goes for insurance, said Larry Thursby, vice president of auto product and pricing at Nationwide.

The least expensive way to insure your teen is usually to add him or her to your policy, says Chris Kissell, managing editor at Insurance.com. “However, this can be a money loser if your car is particularly expensive to insure. In those cases, it may make sense economically to have the teen buy a car that is less expensive to insure and to purchase his or her own policy.”

Capitalize on good grades. Many insurance companies offer “good student” discounts to top students. “This definition varies from insurer to insurer, but it usually is someone who has a B average, is on the honor roll, Dean’s list, or ranks in the upper 20% the class. The discount typically ranges between 10-15%,” says Erik Larson, president and founder of NextAdvisor.com, a consumer service review site. Nationwide, for example, offers a 25% reduction in premium for drivers under 21 who maintain a “B” average or better.

Beyond that, have your teen study up. A discount of 5% to 15% may be given to those who have recently taken a defensive driving course, says Larson.

Set the Tone

Before giving them a car, create a “Rules of the Road” contract for them to sign, suggests Cunningham. It can include such things as how many people can be in the car at once, who will pay for gas, insurance, maintenance, what happens to driving privileges if the child gets a ticket or has a wreck, and what time curfew is, among other things.

The last big big issue is how much weight parents have in the final decision about which car to buy. Says Mackey, “If you are paying 100% then you have 100% of the final decision. If your child is not in agreement, then bank the money until they have a certain amount to contribute.”

You can buy almost anything over the Internet including clothes, a pizza, music, a hotel room, even a car. And while most transactions are conducted lawfully and securely, there are instances when criminals insert themselves into the marketplace, hoping to trick potential victims into falling for one of their scams.

Today, the FBI s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) issued an alert about a specific type of cyber scam that targets consumers looking to buy vehicles online.

How the scam works. While there are variations, here s a basic description: consumers find a vehicle they like often at a below-market price on a legitimate website. The buyer contacts the seller, usually through an e-mail address in the ad, to indicate their interest. The seller responds via e-mail, often with a hard-luck story about why they want to sell the vehicle and at such a good price.

In the e-mail, the seller asks the buyer to move the transaction to the website of another online company .for security reasons .and then offers a buyer protection plan in the name of a major Internet company (e.g. eBay). Through the new website, the buyer receives an invoice and is instructed to wire the funds for the vehicle to an account somewhere. In a new twist, sometimes the criminals pose as company representatives in a live chat to answer questions from buyers.

Once the funds are wired, the buyer may be asked by the seller to fax a receipt to show that the transaction has taken place. And then the seller and buyer agree upon a time for the delivery of the vehicle.

What actually happens: The ad the consumer sees is either completely phony or was hijacked from another website. The buyer is asked to move from a legitimate website to a spoofed website, where it s easier for the criminal to conduct business. The buyer protection plan offered as part of the deal is bogus. And the buyer is asked to fax the seller proof of the transaction so the crooks know when the funds are available for stealing.

And by the time buyers realize they ve been scammed, the criminals and the money are long gone.

Red flags for consumers:

  • Cars are advertised at too-good-to-be true prices;
  • Sellers want to move transactions from the original website to another site;
  • Sellers claim that a buyer protection program offered by a major Internet company covers an auto transaction conducted outside that company s website;
  • Sellers refuse to meet in person or allow potential buyers to inspect the car ahead of time;
  • Sellers who say they want to sell the car because they re in the U.S. military about to be deployed, are moving, the car belonged to someone who recently died, or a similar story;
  • Sellers who ask for funds to be wired ahead of time.

Number of complaints. From 2008 through 2010, IC3 has received nearly 14,000 complaints from consumers who have been victimized, or at least targeted, by these scams. Of the victims who actually lost money, the total dollar amount is staggering: nearly $44.5 million.

If you think you ve been victimized by an online auto scam, file a complaint with IC3. Once complaints are received and analyzed, IC3 forwards them as appropriate to a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency.

A used car also loses less value. If you bought a used car for $5,000 tomorrow, and a month later you decided you didn’t like it, you could probably sell it for the same price—maybe even more. This is simply not the case with a new car. A new car loses significant value the moment you drive it off the lot. It’s hard to imagine a case where you could sell that car for the same amount you paid, and even harder to imagine selling it for more.

Where to Shop for Your First Car

You have plenty of options when heading out to purchase your first set of wheels:

  • Buying from a dealership.
  • Buying a used car from another private party.
  • Shopping online.

Regardless of the route you take, it’s a good idea to visit a dealership to test drive the cars you are interested in. Once you narrow down your choice, consider shopping online and getting quotes from multiple dealers to help you figure out the best deal you can negotiate for.

You can also ask to see all the fees they charge at the time of the sale. This will give you an exact figure to work with, and also allow you to compare the different dealerships’ prices. Getting quotes online is also a good way to separate the process of pricing a car from the process of getting a loan or lease.

Two women have being dubbed Aldi’s biggest fans after travelling 70 miles and camping out for 48 hours ahead of the grand opening of a new store.

Carol Wright, 71, and Lyn Lakelin, 61, set off from their homes in Nottingham on Tuesday and spent a full two days in the car park before the store – in Lincolnshire – opened this morning.

The visit adds to the local hype over the £5million discount supermarket which the area manager claims has even prompted a surge in house prices in the area.

Mrs Wright explained one of the reasons they made the trip, saying: ‘When we are at home we always shop at Aldi. It’s cheap and everything is good quality.’

Manager Samantha Ward said keen shoppers had been trying to get into the store and shop since Saturday, knocking on the glass doors and asking to get in and taking photos.

She said there had been a big ‘vibe’ surrounding a Facebook page marketing the opening, which had attracted people from miles around.

Today, let’s try to find the first automobile. The University of Houston’s College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them.

T he automobile is one more invention that always seems to have just one more antecedent. The earliest steam-powered car we know about was finished as early as 1769 by French inventor Nicolas Cugnot. It was a large three-wheeled vehicle that moved at the speed of a walk and was meant to haul cannon. Earlier cars had been driven by springs and compressed air. Windmill-powered vehicles were made before them. Leonardo da Vinci sketched self-powered vehicles, and even Homer wrote about them.

So let’s limit our search to autos driven by internal combustion, and to ones actually built. We usually give that prize to Carl Benz. Benz championed the new internal-combustion engines, and he worked single-mindedly to create a car driven by one. He built a little three-wheeled car in 1885 and sold his first one two years later. He went into production with a four-wheeled model in 1890, and the Mercedes-Benz company is still with us.

But Benz wasn’t first. The French inventor de Rochas built an auto, and an engine to drive it, in 1862. Two years later, the Austrian Siegfried Markus began working on cars. His second one was rediscovered in 1950. It’d been bricked up behind a false wall in the cellar of a Viennese museum to hide it from the Germans. Markus was Jewish, and the Nazis had orders to destroy his car and any literature describing it. By the way, when the car was rediscovered, it could still be driven.

Markus’ story is especially poignant because, if the German Benz believed in the auto, he didn’t. In 1898, Markus was invited to be guest of honor at the Austrian Auto Club. He declined, calling the whole idea of the auto “a senseless waste of time and effort.”

The search for the earliest internal-combustion-driven auto might end in England in 1826. An engineer named Samuel Brown adapted an old Newcomen steam engine to burn gas, and he used it to power his auto up Shooter’s Hill in London. And here the whole priority question mires into hair-splitting definitions.

What we usually do in these cases is pretty arbitrary. We credit the first commercial success. That’s how Edison gets credit for the light bulb and Fulton for the steamboat. By that definition, Benz did invent the automobile.

Automotive historian James Flink notes that modern bicycles came into being just as Benz began his work, and they sparked the public demand for personal vehicles. But bicycle-makers were the same people who went on to make, first motorcycles, then airplanes. They sowed the demand and then veered off into another technology altogether. The people who took up automobiles were closer kin to the railway business. For a brief time, it looked as though the steam car might beat out internal combustion.

My wife and I filed Chapter 7 in 2005. We kept our home. We have a first and second mortgage on it. Our car, a 2001 Ford Taurus, has 152,000 miles on it and is beginning to have a few issues. My question is: Where can we buy another car, possibly a new one, since we have filed Chapter 7?

First of all, congratulations. You and your wife filed, were awarded a discharge and kept your home. That’s an excellent outcome — great work!

Now, as to your question of purchasing a car, this is a landmark challenge that happens to everyone who files bankruptcy — the first major purchase that requires financing. How do you accomplish this when bankruptcy has killed your credit?

4 keys to post-bankruptcy borrowing

By paying attention to these four important steps, you will be able to rebuild your credit history and lower the cost of major purchases.

  1. Clarify your priorities.
  2. Identify the right kind of deal.
  3. Re-establish your credit.
  4. Be diligent in your search.

1. Clarify your priorities: While it can be tempting to try to buy a new car, the priority is getting reliable transportation you can comfortably afford. I suspect you’re on board with this strategy, Tony. Therefore, consider a reliable used car. After all, why buy something that depreciates 20 percent when you drive it off the lot?

2. Identify the right kind of deal: First, consult a reliable auto rating publication, such as Consumer Reports, and look for vehicles in the $10,000 to $15,000 price range. You’re obviously driving your car a lot, and you need something that can handle the mileage. Also, for everyone else reading this column, I wouldn’t consider going much cheaper. It takes a lot of time, energy and money to go through the dying throes of one car and to buy another. You can save yourself a lot of expense and hassle if you buy the right $10,000 car and drive it for six years rather than buying two $5,000 cars and driving each for three years.

Just to be explicit, if you buy a $10,000 car and get a standard four-year loan at a rate of 10 to 15 percent, that comes to a monthly car payment of $250 to $280. This is the kind of scenario for which you need to be prepared. Bankrate’s auto loan calculator can help you figure the exact payment.

3. Re-establish your credit: Before looking for a financing deal on a car, you must have a secured or unsecured credit card and some payment history. Banks provide unsecured cards with limits determined by your credit score. If you can get one of these, it will come with an exorbitant interest rate. If you can’t get an unsecured card, banks will provide a secured credit card in exchange for a deposit. That is, if you deposit $500 in an account they’ll give you a card with a $500 limit — and an exorbitant interest rate. These might seem like bad deals, but if you don’t spend much money and you pay your balances each month, it becomes a very good deal. Why? Because a good payment history makes your credit score climb.

You want to log at least six months of paying your monthly balances on your cards before attempting to make a major purchase that will require financing. Tony, your credit score may have improved slightly because you continue to pay your mortgage, but if you establish a new credit line and keep it, your score will increase even more. This will save you money on your future car loan because you will be eligible for a much better rate.

4. Be diligent in your search: Open the phone book and make a list of every dealer, then contact each one and ask to speak with the finance department. Let them know that you are a homeowner, you pay your mortgages on time and you have your bankruptcy discharge notification, then ask them if they will finance you. If they say yes, ask them what rates are typical for someone in your situation. Don’t allow them to look at your credit until you get a straight answer. You do not want any credit inquires until you are confident you can obtain a loan.

You must be willing to make 30 to 50 calls (and possibly visit several dealerships in person) to get the best deal. Do not let the dealer tell you things like “because you filed bankruptcy, this is the best you can get.” Absolutely untrue. I know someone who recently bought a used car for $5,000 less than the $15,000 asking price. Yes, he had decent credit, but he also found a situation where the dealer needed to get the car off the lot. These deals exist.

Remember, patience is a virtue, but persistence to the point of success is a blessing.

Buying Your First Car

Buying your first car is a rite of passage that you’ll remember long after the car is gone. Take these steps to make sure you remember all that went right, and not the bumps in the road.

Setting a Budget

The hardest part of buying a new car is reconciling the car you’ve always dreamed of with the reality of the cost. Cars are expensive in and of themselves, and there are many fees at the time of purchase to consider—not to mention the recurring cost of car insurance. general maintenance, parking, gas, etc.

Once you understand your budget, you can start to look for cars in your price range. If you can’t afford the car you want, keep saving or keep an eye out for an older model year.

Down Payment Financing

You will need to determine how much cash you can put down when buying your first car, and how much you can afford on a monthly basis if you plan to get a loan. Interest rates favor large down payments and new cars over used cars—but regardless, your budget will be the primary driver in what you can buy.

Auto Insurance

Auto insurance is especially expensive for new drivers. If you have to pay for that yourself, be sure to get a quote from an insurance company or two before you buy the car.

Look into the possibility of being added to the policy of a current driver in your home—your parents, your spouse, etc. You may find that you’ll get a reduced rate, and your policyholder may even be eligible for bundling discounts.

Buying New vs. Used

One way to get closer to the convertible of your dreams (or other higher-end car) is to take a look at used cars. An older car with low mileage may be hard to find, but can be a great deal.

Another benefit of buying a used car, especially if you are a new driver, is that the car will likely already have a few dings and dents. If you happen to add a couple more as you become a more experienced driver, it will be less upsetting than on a brand new car.

A used car also loses less value. If you bought a used car for $5,000 tomorrow, and a month later you decided you didn’t like it, you could probably sell it for the same price—maybe even more. This is simply not the case with a new car. A new car loses significant value the moment you drive it off the lot. It’s hard to imagine a case where you could sell that car for the same amount you paid, and even harder to imagine selling it for more.

Where to Shop for Your First Car

You have plenty of options when heading out to purchase your first set of wheels:

  • Buying from a dealership.
  • Buying a used car from another private party.
  • Shopping online.

Regardless of the route you take, it’s a good idea to visit a dealership to test drive the cars you are interested in. Once you narrow down your choice, consider shopping online and getting quotes from multiple dealers to help you figure out the best deal you can negotiate for.

You can also ask to see all the fees they charge at the time of the sale. This will give you an exact figure to work with, and also allow you to compare the different dealerships’ prices. Getting quotes online is also a good way to separate the process of pricing a car from the process of getting a loan or lease.

This technique is a smart move even if you’re buying a car from another private seller—it will give you a ballpark idea of how much a dealer will charge, so you can then figure out how much you’re willing to spend for a used car WITHOUT the protections from a dealership.

It is difficult for most Americans to fully comprehend the popularity of the Morgan, with its peculiar vintage styling, not to mention the quaint, old-fashioned Britishness of the whole business.

Since 1910, the Morgan Motor Company has been the main employer in the sleepy country town of Malvern Link in Worcestershire, England. It still operates in its original buildings.

Morgans had to provide wind-in-the hair motoring, and they had to be made by hand. In Britain, buyers are even prepared to wait five years from order to delivery.

As Car and Driver first informed readers in the June 1999 issue, a new, thoroughly modern Morgan would be launched at the 2000 Geneva auto show, with deliveries to British customers set to start at the end of the year.

Called the Aero 8, the new Morgan has an aluminum chassis, a state-of-the-art BMW V-8 engine, and advanced features — at least for Morgan — such as an independent rear suspension, power steering, and disc brakes at all four wheels. It signals a reorganization that will allow the factory to double production to 24 cars a week, or about 1000 per annum. And that, we are told, is because Morgan is heading for the United States, with this fully certified, crash-tested, air-bagged, and bumper-compliant Aero 8. The target date for its arrival is the summer of 2002.

Creating a high-tech Morgan for the 21st century was tricky. For years, the company rejected the idea of a completely new car as too difficult a task. Besides, it was back-ordered for five years. But in 1996, Charles Morgan, grandson of company founder H.F.S. Morgan, decided to take the plunge.

Racing had shown the potential of an aluminum chassis that could fit under a body of Morgan proportions. That chassis was originally designed by Jim Randle, the former engineering chief of Jaguar, but the development of the Aero 8 has been the work of veteran Morgan tuner and racer Chris Lawrence. The task of shaping a body that would confer stability at speeds as high as 160 mph, yet be unmistakably a Morgan, was taken on by Charles Morgan himself.

Inspired by the classic French and Italian roadsters of the 1930s, Charles did sketches of his ideas for the new car but admits that it was actually shaped by a kind of reverse engineering — they made it up as they went along. The chassis was there and body parts were made, fitted, and modified, the appearance being approved by the company’s small management team at each stage. Sad to say, the result is a car that looks as if it were designed by a committee. The headlight units that are flushed into the wide, sweeping fenders give it a cross-eyed appearance. A large but essential air splitter forms an awkward “shelf” under the dummy traditional radiator grille, and the drooping, squared-off tail is at odds with the generous curves of the front.

So this is a Morgan, but not as we know it. The simple — and flexible — steel ladder frame of the old car has been replaced by a stiff, lightweight chassis of 32 aluminum alloy panels, bonded and riveted together, using specially prepared sheetmetal and a construction process developed by Alcan.

The suspension has rocker arms and inboard coil-over shock units instead of the ancient sliding-pillar arrangement at the front, and wide control arms replace the cart-sprung rear axle. Ultralight five-spoke O-Z magnesium alloy wheels are used, 18 inches in diameter and 9.0 inches wide.

Spherical steel joints are used throughout the suspension, with rubber bushings only at the damper mounts. There are two curiosities about the suspension. The coil-over shock units at the rear are “floating” — both ends are mounted on the control arms, at the outboard end of the lower arm, inboard on the upper — and there are no anti-roll bars. Lawrence says: “The roll center is low, and I prefer to balance the car’s handling with the spring rates.”

Remember your child’s first steps? They marked the beginning of a new era: Suddenly, you were no longer completely in control. If you think that was tough, just wait until you get your teenager their first car.

Aside from the obvious emotions — your fear, their extreme excitement — it’s a situation full of financial implications. Do you buy used or new? Who pays for what? How to get the best deal on insurance? The list goes on and on.

The experts weighed in on this family turning point.

Don’t Get It Twisted

“Having a car is not a birthright,” says Gail Cunningham, spokesperson for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, who raised four children. “Today’s teens seem to think that they should have a car waiting for them in the driveway when they return home from the Motor Vehicle Department with their driver’s license. If that’s right for your family, fine. But don’t be held hostage to peer pressure, and by that I mean from other families who are buying their teen a car.”

Secondly, she says, the teen should not be driving a better car than mom and dad. “Today’s high school parking lots look like a showroom with the latest models on display. What happened to handing down a family car from child to child?” she asks.

Thirdly, take advantage of a teachable moment. “The child should have some skin in the game,” says Cunningham, who recommends opening a “My First Car” savings account. Let your teen pile up money from summer jobs, allowance, holiday and birthday gifts and more. You can offer to match their money toward a down payment.

First on your list should be to research which makes most sense for you: buying new or used.

“Buying a new car is insurance against breakdowns and repairs, regardless of the age or experience of the driver,” says Bob Gritzinger, executive editor of AutoWeek.com.

While you’ll get peace of mind, you’ll also pay more for that luxury — though the prices of used cars have risen in recent months — as well as more for insurance.

“A first time driver doesn’t need a new car, but of course they want one,” says Lori Mackey, president of Prosperity4Kids. “The depreciation, probability of fender benders and the price tag [means new] is not the most logical way to go.”

Financially, you are almost always better off buying used, says Jack Nerad, executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book. “If you buy a certified pre-owned car you get the advantages of a new-car like warranty, and perhaps, better financing rates.”

How to pick the best car

Once you’ve settled on new versus old, then comes the tougher question: Which car? For starters, think about how often and how far the car will be driven typically. Will your child be driving back and forth from college over a great distance? Or will the car mostly be used locally?

Go over safety and crash-test information from organizations such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. suggests Gritzinger. Go through quality and reliability ratings from a measuring service such as J.D. Power and Associates .

While new cars will have all the latest safety bells and whistles, late-model used cars will have airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, and their power and performance won’t overwhelm new drivers, says Gritzinger.

Less power in the hands of a young driver is good, regardless of the model. “Choose a car with a responsive chassis — one with good handling, quick steering and great brakes — that takes advantage of a teen driver’s naturally quick reaction skills,” advises Gritzinger.

LeeAnn Shattuck, co-owner and chief car chick with Women’s Automotive Solutions, says to forget “image,” because it can come at a cost. “I see these young, inexperienced drivers in Mustangs, BMWs, and large SUVs. These automobiles are big, powerful and difficult to control for even experienced drivers. In the hands of a new driver, they can be deadly weapons.”

Cars that are too small are problematic too, as they do not protect passengers as well in a front-end crash, warns Shattuck. “Your teen is safest in a mid-sized sedan with a four cylinder engine, airbags and a good crash test rating.”

You also want to take into account what kind of gas mileage the car gets, and how much it will cost to maintain and insure.

To check mileage data, go to www.fueleconomy.gov. “This not only allows you to check and compare fuel economy ratings, but give a lot of good tips on how to maximize fuel economy in other ways that everyone can do. You can research vehicles back to 1987,” says Michael Rabkin, president, From Car to Finish. a vehicle research firm.

Some cars have safety systems geared specifically toward teen drivers. Hyundai Blue Link, for example, says Gritzinger, can alert the vehicle’s owner if someone has driven the car beyond preset boundaries or after certain hours.

Accept the fact that buying this car is going to take a lot of work, research. “Remember, there are a lot of scams and if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. My son will be driving in four months and he has been researching daily. He found a car that was priced extremely low. After digging deeper, he found out it was a ‘salvage’ car. I said ‘no,’ and he argued with me until I said, go research online what salvage means. No further conversation was necessary,” says Mackey.

Shop hard and test drive. “Don’t feel you have to buy the first car you see,” says Nerad, whose Kelley Blue Book is a great place to start, as well Edmunds.com .

Save on Insurance

You’ve found that perfect ride, but before your kid hits the road, there’s the little matter of insurance. A recent Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company found that households shell out an average of nearly $3,100 each year to allow their teens to drive, and some $800 of that, on average, goes for insurance, said Larry Thursby, vice president of auto product and pricing at Nationwide.

The least expensive way to insure your teen is usually to add him or her to your policy, says Chris Kissell, managing editor at Insurance.com. “However, this can be a money loser if your car is particularly expensive to insure. In those cases, it may make sense economically to have the teen buy a car that is less expensive to insure and to purchase his or her own policy.”

Capitalize on good grades. Many insurance companies offer “good student” discounts to top students. “This definition varies from insurer to insurer, but it usually is someone who has a B average, is on the honor roll, Dean’s list, or ranks in the upper 20% the class. The discount typically ranges between 10-15%,” says Erik Larson, president and founder of NextAdvisor.com, a consumer service review site. Nationwide, for example, offers a 25% reduction in premium for drivers under 21 who maintain a “B” average or better.

Beyond that, have your teen study up. A discount of 5% to 15% may be given to those who have recently taken a defensive driving course, says Larson.

Set the Tone

Before giving them a car, create a “Rules of the Road” contract for them to sign, suggests Cunningham. It can include such things as how many people can be in the car at once, who will pay for gas, insurance, maintenance, what happens to driving privileges if the child gets a ticket or has a wreck, and what time curfew is, among other things.

The last big big issue is how much weight parents have in the final decision about which car to buy. Says Mackey, “If you are paying 100% then you have 100% of the final decision. If your child is not in agreement, then bank the money until they have a certain amount to contribute.”
