About American Family

Best Auto Insurance Companies 2017

American Family Insurance was another very strong and consistent company in our survey. The auto insurer received 4.5 stars in three major categories: price, customer service and claims. AmFam also earned a 91 percent renewal rate and an 86 percent recommendation rate for an overall score of 89.2. American Family is the 9th-largest auto insurer in the U.S. and offers auto insurance policies in 19 states.

Dream big

Like many successful insurance companies, American Family Insurance has its roots in farming in the American Midwest. It began as Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Madison, Wis., in 1927. Over the years, Farmers Mutual’s market expanded from rural areas to small towns and from the suburbs to metropolitan areas, and in 1963, the company changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company to reflect its broader customer base. The company also expanded its geographic base. Today, American Family Insurance with a team of 3,500 agents serves customers in 19 states:

The company believes is managing risk so that its clients are free to dream big. The company created a space in Madison, WI where they hold activity classes and events for the whole family and showcase exhibits of inspiration and support for bringing dreams to life.

Consider American Family Insurance for a customer-owned company and one point of contact

American Family is a mutual company, meaning its customers are its owners, but don t think that makes it small time. American Family is the nation’s fourth-largest mutual property and casualty insurer. With a mutual insurance company, any profits earned are returned to the policyholders in the form or dividends or reduced premiums.

The company boasts a team of agents committed to taking care of your insurance needs completely. If you have multiple policies, one agent will be your point of contact for all your claims and information needs. If you live in an area where you might suffer multiple types of claims at once, such as from severe weather damaging your home and car, dealing with one agent and one company instead of several might ease the burden.

About American Family

Best Insurance Companies survey 2017

Some families are dysfunctional, but not American Family Insurance. The insurer received high marks from its members in this year’s survey. They landed an overall score of 84.6, and individual numbers were high as well. American Family was given a 4.5 for its claims processing, and its members were happy with customer service (4.25) and the value for price (4). There may be some reservations among some customers, with 82 percent being happy to recommend the company. Still, 92 percent say that they will renew.

Farming roots

Herman Witter, an insurance salesman, started Farmer Mutual Insurance Company in Madison, Wisconsin. His is a familiar tale, if you’ve been boning up on your insurance company history. Witter focused on selling car insurance to farmers because they were seen as a good risk compared to city drivers.

As the years went on, Witter’s company evolved, and like many regional insurance companies around the country. In 1963, the company changed its name to American Family to reflect the expansion.

Today, American Family Insurance is a Fortune 500 company serving customers nationwide in areas of auto, home, health, life and business in 19 states across the country (Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin).

Homeowners policies offered

  • Home
  • Condo
  • Manufactured home

American Family homeowner programs

  • New home — Talk to your agent; you may be able to get a discount if your home is new.
  • Family member discount — Are you parents an American Family customer? If they are, and you’re between 18 and 30, you may end up saving money.
  • Renovations discount — If you’ve completely replaced the plumbing, electrical and heating systems in your home, you can get a discount.

Additional policies include

  • Auto
  • Life
  • Business
  • Manufactured home
  • Boat
  • Farm and Ranch
  • Umbrella
  • Travel
  • ATV and RV

Consider American Family Insurance if you have a family

Yes, many insurers are very pro-family, but American Family Insurance seems to take its name very seriously. As noted earlier, if you’re a young homeowner, and your parents are American Family Insurance customers, you’ll get a discount. That said, American Family provides numerous discounts, for virtually every type of family. Is your kid in college, 100 or miles away, and the car is parked in your garage? You get a discount. Are your kids doing volunteer work? If they do 40 hours a year, you can get a discount. If they’re getting good grades, you can get a discount. You get the idea.

Family Security Credit Union Employee Reviews

Teller (Current Employee) Gardendale, AL February 14, 2017

I enjoyed working at Family Security, but unless you work at a Northern Alabama branch there is no room for advancing your career here. Pay was not great at all. The best part was the benefits and insurance (BCBS of AL and VSP vision insurance). Training was not sufficient.

Healthcare, benefits, nice coworkers

Pay, work life balance

Job Work/Life Balance

Very friendly staff.

Bank Teller (Former Employee) Hartselle, AL January 20, 2017

Very friendly staff, fun environment, great benefits. Everyone gets along. Nice dress code. Stress free environment.

Job Work/Life Balance

Branch Manager Vault Supervisor Senior Teller II (Former Employee) Decatur, AL January 2, 2017

Great coworkers and friendly environment. Most enjoyable part was helping customers with their financial goals. Hardest part of job was juggling too many jobs with no attempts by senior management to improve the lack of personnel.

What I learned most about management is how to better communicate with staff and customers and get positive results.

Work hard and advance quickly with good compensation for efforts.

Collection Officer (Current Employee) decatur,al August 10, 2012

The typical work day consists of many challenges and learning experiences. By working here i have learned that you job is only as hard as you make and your career will only go as far as you allow it to go. My co-workers here are very nice, energetic, and amazing. The most enjoyable part about this job is overcoming the day to day challenges.

What is Knowledge Park?

Knowledge Park is the dynamic center of Rock Hill’s new economy. Technologically advanced, yet rooted in the city’s rich history, Knowledge Park is supported by a diverse community of learners and offers an appealing urban lifestyle built upon a model of economic and environmental sustainability.

Where is Knowledge Park?

Knowledge Park stretches from the Old Town East residential development at Elizabeth Lane to Winthrop University at Cherry Road including the historic downtown, several revitalizing residential neighborhoods, the redeveloping textile corridor, and the university campus.

Why Knowledge Park?

The new economy is built upon creativity, innovation, and opportunity. The cultural fabric of the connected village is the future of this place and our world.

Partners

Partners in the Knowledge Park Innovation Initiative include:

Economic Development

From the Inside

Marketing, Family Trust Federal Credit Union

“As a Rock Hill native who graduated from Winthrop, made my career at the credit union that was born from the Bleachery, (even has family members who worked there), to me Knowledge park is the most exciting thing to happen to Rock Hill. I can’t wait for Family Trust’s headquarters to open right across the street from where it all began. What a view it will be watching Knowledge Park develop and change this city over the next few years.”

Owner, Millstone Pizza and McHale’s Irish Pub

“There’s energy here. I wouldn’t be so invested in the place if I didn’t feel it and see it every day.”

Knowledge Park’s Speaker’s Conference Review

“”It was really interesting, I loved the part of the presentation about the explanation of the city of Rock Hill. I cannot wait to come back in five years and see how it has expanded.””

– Anne Berger, Winthrop International Student

Director of Multimedia, RevenFlo

“I live and work in the Knowledge Park area, so I get to see first-hand every day how much downtown Rock Hill is thriving and growing. There is a great local art and music scene, businesses that are doing innovative and important things, and some great places to grab a beer or a coffee. I’m excited to watch the area continue to flourish, to eat the food at future restaurants, and to see what or who is attracted here next.”

Principal, Vinyet Architecture

“The development of Knowledge Park serves a much greater purpose than just a literal connection to downtown; it is bridging a generational gap by introducing new approaches to design and use of space on a historic site. The appeal of the visionaries’ plan is something Rock Hill has been longing for and as a local, growing architecture firm we are excited about its opportunities.”

E-Commerce Manager, Springs Creative

“Knowledge park provides a little bit of everything. Great spot for lunch and happy hour gatherings after a long day’s work…and so conveniently located!”

2010 Top 10 Family Cars

Posted: 1/4/2010 8:00:00 AM

If safe, roomy and affordable are the characteristics that qualify a vehicle as a family car, then the American family has never had so many choices. While a sea of options is ultimately a good thing, it can also make it more difficult for families to pick a winner. To help ease the pain, every year we put together a list of the Top 10 Family Vehicles, evaluating an ever-lengthening list of eligible vehicles on such factors as resale value, fuel efficiency, capability and kid-friendliness. This year’s list features vehicles in a range of sizes and prices, offering something for a wide variety of families — everything from an SUV that can comfortably accommodate nine passengers to a compact, fuel-efficient wagon capable of taking the road less traveled. Here they are, listed in order of overall passenger/cargo roominess.

2010 Chevy SuburbanEven when carrying nine passengers, the Chevy Suburban still offers a cavernous 45.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Still not enough? Hook up a trailer and the Suburban can tow up to 9,600 pounds. Beyond sheer size and strength, the Suburban delivers a comfortable ride and plenty of occupant-coddling niceties.

2010 Honda Odyssey We’ve always thought an Acura badge would look right at home on the sharply styled, thoroughly refined Honda Odyssey. The most premium-like minivan on the market was also our editors’ top pick in a recent segment comparison test, thanks to its ability to package versatility and amenities in a vehicle that is both comfortable and involving to drive.

2010 Chevy Traverse Boasting more cargo volume than even its Chevy Tahoe stablemate, the Traverse is the biggest crossover on the road — yet it beats the fuel economy of many smaller three-row vehicles. We like both of the Traverse’s siblings — the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia — but the Chevrolet’s lower starting price makes it our choice for families.

2010 Ford FlexIf we had to pick an overall winner from our Top 10 Family Cars list, the 2010 Ford Flex might get the nod. It drives better than some mid-size sedans, offers comfortable seating for seven and boasts a long list of available interior amenities including an array of infotainment features and even a small refrigerator. Opt for the 355-horsepower twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and you’ve got a full-featured family hot rod.

2010 Subaru Outback The Subaru Outback is a sport wagon with a crossover complex, combining some of the best elements of both. And the all-new 2010 Outback is the longest, widest, most family-friendly yet. Combined with 8.7 inches of ground clearance and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, this rugged wagon can make it to grandma’s house in even the toughest conditions.

2010 Chevy EquinoxIn the highly populated crossover category, the Chevy Equinox stands out from the crowd as a vehicle that competently embodies function and form. In addition to an upscale interior and bold exterior styling, the Equinox is also able to achieve a class-leading 32 mpg on the highway (in four-cylinder form).

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour The 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour is everything we like about the Accord Sedan and more. It shares the same V6 engine, passenger room and overall styling with its sedan counterpart, but boasts almost twice the cargo capacity — a big win for families — thanks to its hatchback shape.

2010 Ford Taurus What was once merely a competent full-size sedan has transformed into a visually striking technological tour de force. With features uncommon in its segment, a roomy cabin, cavernous trunk, and nimbleness that belies its size, the redesigned 2010 Ford Taurus is a family car that pleases everyone, including the driver.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid The Ford Fusion Hybrid isn’t just the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedan on the road, it’s one of the best. Rated to return up to 41 mpg on the highway, the Fusion Hybrid will not only save you money at the pump on the next family trip, it will also keep everyone entertained with the latest SYNC voice-activated iPod and phone technology.

2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring Sporting a roomy and flexible cargo area, a slew of safety features, an outstanding warranty and a low starting price, one could make a case for the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring as the most family-friendly small car out there. It’s also easy on gas and not afraid to have a little fun.

Pro-life answers to pro-choice arguments

The following are a sample pro-life rebuttals to common pro-choice arguments. Please note that wording is presented here in a casual, conversational style to reflect the natural manner of speaking that one might have in a face-to-face conversation with pro-choice friends, relatives, classmates or co-workers. If dialoguing with somebody in writing, the wording, grammar and/or tone might have to be modified.

Pro-choice argument #1:
Pro-lifers want to take away women s rights.

Pro-life answer:
#1. We support women s rights. We re all for choice too. so long as you don t kill anybody. Your argument begs the question, however – does abortion kill an innocent human being? If not, then there is no moral or ethical problem. If however, abortion represents the killing of an innocent member of the human family, it is immoral, unethical and cannot be justified. There is no such thing as a right to kill innocent people.
# 2. Fifty percent of unborn children are girls. The unborn female has a body that is separate to that of her mother. She has her own unique DNA. Her genetic code directs the development and growth of her own body, from the moment of conception. Therefore, one out of every two abortions takes away the rights of a woman. It takes away her right to control her own body. It takes away her right to choose anything in the future. It takes away a right more fundamental than the right to choose – the right to not be killed.

Pro-choice argument #2:
Women will die of unsafe abortions if we make it illegal.

Pro-life answer:
#1. That argument begs the question – is it ok for society to sanction child-murder just because some people might do it anyway? Should we legalize rape so the government can make it safer and cleaner? Should we legalize the underground trade in sex slaves to regulate and make it safer?
#2. That is a myth concocted by the abortion industry. Before its legalization, most illegal abortions were already committed in doctor s offices by physicians. Dr. Bernard Nathanson, the co-founder of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), admits that he and other abortion industry leaders invented figures to make the claim that thousands of women are dying annually from unsafe abortions. They did this in order to win public sympathy for legalization.
#3. It s possible that more women are dying today as a result of legal abortion than were dying before its legalization in 1969. Abortion surgery and abortifacient pills like RU-486 do sometimes result in death from continued bleeding or infection. Studies also show a correlation between abortion-choice and suicide. Want to keep women from dying? End the abortion culture and support your neighbour through her pregnancy.

Pro-choice argument #3:
Religion should not influence our laws.

  1. That statement begs a more fundamental question – what is the unborn? If the unborn is in fact a human being, then we can t permit abortion simply on the basis that Christianity opposes it.
  2. Laws against murder and stealing are based on the 10 Commandments. Which one of these would you like to toss? The truth is that killing children in utero violates the natural law, not just Christian teaching.
  3. If something is true, it remains true, regardless of who agrees with it. Should we stop teaching times tables in school because the Church agrees with arithmetic? The nature of the unborn is key in this debate, not who are the groups debating it.

Pro-choice argument #4:
What about compassion for young women whose lives will be ruined by an unwanted pregnancy?

Pro-life answer: #1. That statement begs a deeper question – what is the unborn? If the unborn is in fact a human being, we cannot choose one person s convenience over another person s life. The inherent right to not be killed always ranks higher than the alleged right to be free from hardship or inconvenience.
#2. It is false to suggest that their future educational and career goals must end because one becomes pregnant. With the choice of adoption and the many support programs which exist today, young women or teens can postpone their educational plans but still achieve them.

Pro-choice argument #5:
It s cruel to force a woman to carry a pregnancy which was the result of rape.

Pro-life answer: #1. The Supreme Court has said that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment for rapists and that rapists don t deserve the death penalty. I don t think the innocent child conceived in rape deserves the death penalty for the crimes of her father. It seems to me that is cruel and unusual punishment.
#2. Rape victims are 4 times more likely to die within the next year after the abortion, with a higher rate of suicide, murder, drug overdose, etc. As someone who really cares about rape victims, I want to protect them from the rapist, and from the abortion. A baby is not the worst thing that could ever happen to a rape victim an abortion is. We need to educate the public on the truth in this matter and not make public policy based on myth and misinformation.
#3. Rape victims choose abortion at half the rate of the average unplanned pregnancy, which is over 50%. Only 15-25% of rape victims choose abortion, depending on the study. The majority of rape victims choose to raise her child not the rapist s baby HER child.

How to Become a Marriage and Family Counselor

What Is Marriage and Family Counseling?

Despite many people looking forward to “happily ever after”, this doesn’t always happen. Many relationships and families aren’t perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, and some have so many problems that they seem irreparable. However, contrary to what some may believe, happy marriages and peaceful families are possible. They just take a little – or, in some cases, a lot – of work.

Marriage and family counseling can help many couples and families work out their differences and difficulties. Professionals will often see the same types of problems in most of the couples and families that they work with. Some of the most common problems in many households, for example, often stem from inefficient communication or even a complete lack of communication. Many married couples also find themselves arguing over such things as finances, bad habits, schedules, intimacy, and child rearing.

In today’s hectic world, it is not uncommon for couples and families to split up over even the most minor issues. In fact, some studies have shown that the divorce rate in this country is as high as it has ever been. Because of this, there is an ever growing need for marriage and family counselors.

Featured Marriage Family Counseling Degree Program

Why Do We Need Marriage and Family Counselors?

As mentioned above, the divorce rate in the United States is astounding. Nearly 50% of marriages today end in divorce. Not only does this have an impact on the married couples in these situations, it also usually has a profound impact on any children that were the result of the unions. Children involved in a divorce will often be angry, confused, hurt, and guilty.

Marriage counseling, however, can be used to help save some marriages and patch rifts between family members. This can help lower divorce rates, making children feel more secure, loved, stable, and comfortable in their homes.

What Do Marriage and Family Counselors Do?

Marriage and family counselors work with all different types of married couples and families in an attempt to repair volatile relationships between involved parties. Some of these counselors may specialize in working only with married couples or certain types of families, while others may work with nearly any family that is having troubles.

During these meetings, a marriage and family counselor will typically act as an unbiased third party. He will let each individual in a marriage or family state his or her “side”, or point of view. While one person is speaking, the others involved in the counseling are encouraged to let them state their concerns. If they have anything to interject, they are to wait until it is “their turn” to do so. Also, when speaking, individuals must be courteous and respectful of other family members. For instance, family members should refrain from name calling, yelling, and blaming. They should also be ready and willing to admit their own faults as well.

The goal of marriage and family counseling is not necessarily to cease all arguments, but to open the lines of communication between married couples and other family members. In many cases, this does not usually mean that families will not argue at all. Instead, they will learn to discuss issues, or even argue more effectively.

Marriage and family counselors will often help couples and families tackle a number of issues. however, in most cases, abuse is not usually one of these issues. In fact, counselors in many areas are considered to be mandated reporters of abuse. This means that they are required by law to report suspected cases of abuse, particularly child abuse, to local law enforcement officials.

Where Do Marriage and Family Counselors Work?

Marriage and family counselors may work in a a few different settings. For instance, they may be part of a social service office or a community health center.

The majority of marriage and family counselors, however, usually go into business for themselves, opening their own private practices. In these situations, couples and families seek out the services of the counselors and meet in the counselors’ private offices.

What Are the Education Requirements to Become a Marriage and Family Counselor?

In general, most school counselors begin their careers with a bachelor’s degree in areas

Many individuals pursuing a marriage and family counseling careers will often start by earning a bachelor’s degree in counseling or psychology. While enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, students interested in a marriage and family counseling career should take courses to help them understand life stages, child development, marriage and relationships, and family dynamics.

In order to become a licensed marriage and family counselor, you will also usually need to earn a minimum of a master’s degree in marriage and family counseling as well. Some marriage and family counselors will also earn doctoral degrees in this area. The majority of states also require marriage and family counselors to have at least 3,000 hours of supervised work experience before they can take their licensing examinations. This may vary from state to state, however, so you should contact your state’s licensure board for exact details.

What Is the Average Salary of a Marriage and Family Counselor?

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. as of May of 2014, marriage and family therapists earned an annual average salary of $51,730. However salary will range depending on education and employer and experience. For example, the top 10 percent of marriage and family counselors make an average salary of $78,920 while the bottom 10 percent make just $30,510. New Jersey pays its marriage and family counselors the most of any state in the country while states like Florida and Virginia pay the counselors much less.

    Private Health Insurance, Fast Easy!

Looking for private health insurance can feel a little overwhelming when you’re first getting started. However, with our helpful guides and friendly professionals, you will be on your way to obtaining the right private health insurance for you and your family.

Holding some type of insurance is extremely important, but there are many reasons that insurance may lapse. If you are not insured or you’re planning on switching your current health insurance to a private plan, there is different information you need depending on your situation. There are many reasons as to why you may be looking for private insurance including the following:

    • Your old plan has lapsed, or the premium has grown too high.
    • You’ve recently changed jobs and are no longer covered by an employer plan.
    • You’ve experienced a recent medical crisis and want to make sure you’re covered for the future.
    • You have just become pregnant, or plan to become pregnant soon.
    • You are a new parent interested in obtaining private health insurance for your child.

    Lapsed Plan

If your old insurance plan has lapsed, or the premium has grown too high, you may be searching for a better option. There’s a variety of different health care options available to the consumer and the needs of the individual is usually the deciding factor on which one to go with. If your premium is now out of your budget, you can request quotes from other companies and even call the insurance company to find the plan that’s right for you. More on quotes later.

Loss of Employer Health Insurance Plan

This economy has been tough on everyone and layoffs or restructuring within a company has become common practice. Because of that, individuals and families are increasingly finding themselves joining the forty-six million Americans with poor coverage health insurance, or no insurance at all. However, just because you’re between jobs doesn’t mean you or your family can afford to be between insurance plans. Searching the private sector for a plan that’s right for you, or for your family, is a feasible short-term solution that could turn into a long-term lifestyle choice.

    Preexisting Condition

Possibly you’re looking at getting a private health insurance plan because some or all of the above has befallen you, and to top it off, an unforeseen medical crisis struck. It could be a developing case of diabetes, or a gallbladder procedure that had to be performed immediately. Either way, you’re now in a situation where you have a preexisting condition and need to find some way of getting coverage so you don’t face the same hardships in the future. Finding a plan that covers a preexisting condition is no walk in the park, but it can be done. Some states do not allow insurance companies to discriminate against people with preexisting conditions. New York and Massachusetts, for instance, have a no tolerance policy on discrimination, and no person seeking health insurance can be turned down based on a preexisting condition.

    Pregnancy

If you’ve recently become pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, health insurance is an absolute must for you and your unborn child. Medical bills will become astronomical in a very short amount of time as having a child is one of the most rewarding, but expensive experiences we can have. The private sector is a great place for pregnant women to investigate keeping themselves, and their unborn child, covered.

    Children’s Coverage

If you’re the parent of a child who is not insured, and perhaps have already looked at government insurance options and found that you do not qualify, or are simply looking for a higher level of care, private health insurance may be the best bet for your child’s health and well being. Remember, it’s imperative that you not put off the search for your child’s health care. Doctor visits are required for an infant, and they will continually pile up even if your child is fortunate enough not to develop any serious illnesses. If your child were to become ill it may count as a pre-existing condition and make acquiring health insurance more problematic.

Beginning the Search for the Right Insurance

Before you get into the complex issues, you must first shop around for health insurance. The best way to do this is by looking for a number of private health insurance companies that meet your requirements. There are three specific types of health insurance plans – HMO, POS, and PPO.

    HMO – Health Maintenance Organization

HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organizations and is probably the term the average consumer has heard thrown around the most in the health insurance game. HMO members pay a monthly premium and in exchange the HMO provides care for a family or individual including doctors’ visits, emergency care, surgery, hospital stays, lab tests, and x-rays. Traditionally, HMOs require a co-payment for doctor’s visits, ranging from $5 to $40 depending on the nature of the visit. The total cost of your medical care is likely to be lower with an HMO than any other type of plan.

Because HMOs provide full care for your medical needs, it behooves them to make sure you get preventive care so you do not become seriously ill. Many HMO plans will cover maintenance exams such as mammograms, well-baby checkups, and regular physicals. Range of coverage does vary from plan to plan, however, so you need to thoroughly research your needs and compare with the plans in your price range.

Nearly all HMOs either assign or allow you to choose one primary care doctor. This doctor then sees you whenever you require care and refers you to other specialists as needed. It is unlikely that you would be authorized to see a specialist without having first seen your primary physician and some people can find this limiting.

For those who decide an HMO plan is not right for them, there is a POS plan.

    POS – Point of Service

POS stands for Point-of-Service and is similar to the HMO in almost all features, but allows for more freedom for referrals, both from their primary care physician, and their own judgment. A coinsurance fee is likely still required if you used a provider outside your POS plan.

    PPO – Preferred Provider Organizations

PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organizations and is the last, and most user-friendly, type of insurance. Like an HMO, you still have to choose from a pre-approved list of doctors and hospitals, but unlike the HMO you are not required to use a primary physician for all other referrals. When you visit one of your providing doctors most of your medical bills taken care of by your plan.

Also like the HMO, you will show your insurance card at the front office of your doctor and should not have to fill out any forms. There is customarily co-pay in the same range as the HMO for each visit. Some services not covered by your plan may require a deductible or coinsurance.

Like the POS, the PPO allows you to use doctors who are not part of your approved network of physicians and still receive some coverage. You will be made to pay a larger chunk of your medical bill as well as fill out claims forms, but some people prefer the room to choose. It is also desirable to be able to keep your current doctor even if that doctor is not a part of your insurance plan’s network.

Now, you know what kinds of plans are out there. It is now up to the consumer to decide which plan best fits their or their family’s lives and then go about getting the best quote for their lifestyle. Visit the websites of any and all private health insurance providers you’re interested in – nearly every one of them should have a ‘free quote’ offer that will either provide you with a dollar amount via email or telephone after filling out a brief application.

By simply typing in your age, zip code, and what type of health you’re currently in, you will be able to get an idea how much health insurance is going to cost you. Your premium may range from $100 to $1000 per month, and that’s not including family plans. Once you’ve browsed through a few quotes, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, but this is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, and it is imperative that you weigh your options carefully. Consult friends and family about your quotes if you don’t understand them and above all else, take the time and effort such an important decision requires. It’s always not easy, but insuring your health and well-being is worth it.

To make finding the health care plan that is right for you easier, consult a friendly, knowledgeable professional. They will be there to explain the plans so they make sense and answer any of your questions. Simple fill out the basic form and helpful insurance agents will contact you with plans that will fit your needs at a price you can afford. How The Amount Of Your Vehicle Donation is Determined

A vehicle donation can be a great way to get a deduction on your taxes. Thanks to new tax law that went into effect in January 2005, the IRS has simplified the process by taking the guesswork out of determining the value of your vehicle.

As of January 2005, you may deduct the full price we receive for the sale of your vehicle. This greatly simplifies the process for you, the donor, because you no longer have to research and come up with an estimate of the fair market value of the vehicle.

This also eliminates the risk of you getting into trouble by overstating the value of your deduction on your tax return. You ll know exactly the amount you may deduct, eliminating guesswork. This saves you both time and risk.

The IRS allows you, the taxpayer, to claim a tax deduction of

    • a) The value of your vehicle up to $500 or
    • b) If we sell the vehicle for more than $500, we will mail you a notification stating the exact amount for which it sold, which is the value you state for your tax purposes.
    • c) Fair market value in some cases for certain vehicles. For example, late model cars or vans that end up being used to further the work of our charity OR vehicles on which we make a significant material improvement such as a major repair, before selling it. ( * See more on this option below.)

In any case, you will receive a receipt at the time that your vehicle is picked up.

Assuming that we sell your vehicle for more than $500, we will then mail you a notification stating that value for your tax purposes. So for any vehicle sold for more than $500, the exact amount it is sold for will be stated on your notification mailed to you, which in turn will be your tax deduction.

Please feel free to contact our Car Donation department at Family Care Foundation at 1-800-992-2383 with any questions you may have.

    * * * * * * * * * * * *

    * Excerpt from IRS publication 4302, A Charity s Guide to Car Donations :

If a charity intends to make significant intervening use of or materially improve the car, the donor generally can deduct its fair market value.

Significant intervening use means that a charity must actually use the car to substantially further its regularly conducted activities, and the use must be considerable. There is no significant intervening use if the charity s use is incidental or not intended at the time of the contribution.

Material improvement includes a major repair or improvement that results in a significant increase in the car s value. Cleaning, minor repairs, and routine maintenance are not material improvements.

The charity must provide the donor with a contemporaneous written acknowledgement of the donation. Without an acknowledgement, the donor cannot deduct the contribution.

(end of excerpt from IRS publication 4302, A Charity s Guide to Car Donations)

Contributions of Property and Fair Market Value:

If you contribute property to a qualified organization, the amount of your charitable contribution is generally the fair market value of the property at the time of the contribution. Fair market value is the price at which property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither having to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of all the relevant facts. (From Itemized Deductions/Standard Deductions )

    Determining Fair Market Value:

Cars, boats, and aircraft: If you contribute a car, boat, or aircraft to a charitable organization, you must determine its fair market value.

Certain commercial firms and trade organizations publish guides, commonly called “blue books,” containing complete dealer sale prices or dealer average prices for recent model years. The guides may be published monthly or seasonally, and for different regions of the country. These guides also provide estimates for adjusting for unusual equipment, unusual mileage, and physical condition. The prices are not “official” and these publications are not considered an appraisal of any specific donated property. But they do provide clues for making an appraisal and suggest relative prices for comparison with current sales and offerings in your area.

Example. You donate your car to a local high school for use by their students studying automobile repair. Your credit union told you that the “blue book” value of the car is $1,600. However, your car needs extensive repairs and, after some checking, you find that you could sell it for for $750. You can deduct $750, the true fair market value of the car, as a charitable contribution.

Determining the Value of Donated Property:

This publication is designed to help donors and appraisers determine the value of property (other than cash) that is given to qualified organizations. It also explains what kind of information you must have to support the charitable contribution deduction you claim on your return. IRS Publication 561

    Excerpt from Kelley Blue Book

If you donate a car to a charitable organization, YOU must determine its fair market value. The fair market value of your vehicle cannot be determined by a charity, the IRS considers that to be a “conflict of interest.” Kelley Blue Book can help you determine your vehicle’s value.

Start by logging on to http://www.kbb.com .

[Click on: Used cars at top, and select the year. make and exact model of your vehicle, then press GO . Select “Private Party Value .”]

You also need to fill in the exact mileage on the car and the zip code in which you will be stating that you live on your tax return.

To help further define your specific vehicle’s value, make sure you accurately select the options on your vehicle. These could include a sunroof, leather interior, power windows and door locks, etc. Check these boxes correctly according to your car and check all that apply.

The bottom box is entitled “Select Vehicle Condition .” Choose “Help Me ,” which is the last box on the right. This is important in order to accurately get what the IRS deems as the “fair market value” for your vehicle.

After choosing “Help Me” click on the bottom button called, “Get Pricing Report .”

On this page you rate the following: Exterior Condition, Interior Condition,

Mechanical Condition. and other important factors in rating your vehicles current condition. Choose one rating for each. Do not skip any of these questions. Print this page to show the charity and the IRS that you took the vehicle’s current condition into consideration when placing a value on it.

When finished, click on “Get Pricing Report ” at the bottom of the page. You will then receive the Kelley Blue Book “Private Party Value” for your car in its current condition. This will be the value you will use for your donated vehicle. You should print a few copies of this page for your tax records, the IRS and for the charity in which you are donating your vehicle. Make sure to take several photos of your vehicle for your files as well.

If the amount of your deduction for all non-cash gifts is more then $500.00 then you must file the IRS Form 8283: Non-cash Charitable Contributions (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8283.pdf ) with your itemized tax return. A copy should be mailed to the charity or donation program.

The IRS requires that the charity or donation program verify your donation and file IRS Form 8282: Donee Information Return (www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8282.pdf ). You should be sent a copy for your records.

    TAX INFORMATION FROM THE IRS

For information about determining the “fair market value” of a vehicle you can read “Publication 526 Charitable Contributions” at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf . You should read the entire publication. 12 Best Family Cars of 2014

    Posted: 2/11/2014 9:16:03 AM

Finding the best family car means more than just counting seatbelts and cup holders. Even what qualifies as a “family car” isn’t so clear cut these days. Minivans are an obvious choice, but not if you don’t need all that space. SUVs are great, but that extra cargo room’s a waste if you don’t use it. Then there’s the good ol’ family sedan: Would you like that in regular midsize, or upgrade to full-size? On the flip side, just because something’s big on the outside doesn’t mean it’s useful for families inside. So we had our work cut out for us when we decided to identify the Best Family Cars available in America for 2014.

Happily, we had a good place to start. Based on our Expert Ratings of all the vehicles – more than 300 of them – that we test each year, we gathered the 21 vehicles from across classes we believed had the stuff to be top-shelf family haulers. The selection of the 21 was a rigorous process itself. Each of our nine editors received a list of candidates, then individually voted for up to 20 of them, and they were given the opportunity to nominate any additional vehicles that they felt should be included. We culled the responses, tallied the votes, and the vehicles that received four or more votes were invited to participate in our driving-and-usability test. We requested mainstream models from each manufacturer for our test, and most complied, although we did receive a few fully loaded exceptions. We were careful not to give added advantages to those heavily equipped vehicles, because we wanted the test to be as “real-world” representative as possible.

The resulting list included seven sedans, six small SUVs, five midsize SUVs, two minivans, and one hybrid wagon, from a total of 11 different brands. With these all on premises at our Kelley Blue Book offices our staff installed and uninstalled car seats, loaded up the cargo area with various objects, and even brought their kids down to climb in and out, and maybe test out the rear-seat entertainment. When we were done, we tallied up our results, compared notes, and picked what we thought were the best of the bunch.

Here, then, are the 12 Best Family Cars of 2014:

What did we learn? Certainly it is not surprising to most that the 2014 Honda Odyssey and 2014 Toyota Sienna minivans were at the top of everyone’s favorite family car lists, since the sole purpose of minivans is to be as good at family car duties as a Porsche 911 is at sports car ones. The assembled full-size SUVs also proved their mettle as popular family car choices, with the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder, 2014 Honda Pilot, 2014 Ford Flex and 2014 Chevrolet Traverse all winning honors. As a choice for smaller families, smaller SUVs demonstrated they had what it takes as well, with the 2014 Honda CR-V, 2014 Nissan Rogue, and 2014 Subaru Forester all making our list of honored vehicles.

What was surprising was the number of sedans that we feel qualify for the highest accolades as family cars. Once upon a time, sedans were the family car of choice before minivans and SUVs showed up on the scene. Yet the modern sedan still makes a fine family car, and the 2014 Honda Accord, 2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2014 Nissan Altima each impressed us enough to land spots on our list.

So what about the other nine on our original list of 21? Well, as you might surmise from the fact that we chose to nominate them, we believe they have many attributes that qualify them as good family-car choices. But compared to the vehicles that did make our honored Best Family Cars list, they were either lacking features available in the cars listed above or were too narrowly focused to provide the array of features that marked our top choices. That said, if you need excellent fuel economy, want to tow heavy loads, or just want to go farther off the beaten path, there are some solid alternatives worth checking out on the included list of what are essentially our semi-finalists.

If you are looking to get rid of that clunker, this is the company to deal with! l used Family Car Buyers Dec 4. what a weight off my shoulders!!

My 92 VW cabriolet was sitting in my diveway for over a year. Though she drove well, l couldn t sell her as she was EXTREMELY unsightly. l wasn t able to register the car because l couldn t get her smogged. So outside my place she sat collecting leaves andspiderwebs.

l moved and didn t know what to do with the car. l called my mechanic and they suggested a company ldq– they were HORRIBLE service wise, so much so that l was willing to forego the cash –l just did not want to do business with them!

l called Family Car Buyers and explained my unique situation– that l had the title to my car, but was unable to meet them at the property in Pasadena with the title so that they could tow the car. l was traveling; l needed the car moved. l was in a bind because l was out of town, need the car towed, but had forgotten that l had my scuba and camping gear in the trunk. l didn t want my stuff to be thrown out with the car!!

Family Car Buyers made the whole process of getting rid of my clunker towed ridiculously easy. We made arrangements to have the car towed when l got back into town– because l had not yet gotten another car, l did not want to take the bus from Venice to Pasadena (three to four hours one way!!)  Jonathan at Family  Car Buyers made it easy on me– l brought the title to their office  five minutes away ( much closer than going to Pasadena!) and they gave me cash right on the spot. I knew that the car was no longer mine, but asked if there was someway they could get me back my Scuba gear.

JONATHAN DID. l was travelling again and got sick, but he got my SCUBA and camping gear and held it in his office for two weeks for me! The service was amazing!!Jonathan at Family Car Buyers made the process of getting rid of a car so easy–a blessing for someone who had no idea how to get rid of a vehicle.

Doubtful that l will have a clunker car that l can t sell or need to get rid of again; however, if l do, l will use the services of Family Car Buyer. l received cash for my  car with no hassle. Win-win  for everybody.

    Mental Health and Adjustment Disorder

Adjustment disorder is a short-term condition that occurs when a person has great difficulty coping with, or adjusting to, a particular source of stress, such as a major life change, loss, or event. In 2013, the mental health diagnostic system technically changed the name of “adjustment disorder” to “stress response syndrome.”

Because people with an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome often have some of the symptoms of clinical depression. such as tearfulness, feelings of hopelessness, and loss of interest in work or activities, adjustment disorder is sometimes informally called “situational depression .” Unlike major depression. however, an adjustment disorder doesn’t involve as many of the physical and emotional symptoms of clinical depression (such as changes in sleep. appetite and energy) or high levels of severity (such as suicidal thinking or behavior).

The type of stress that can trigger an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome varies depending on the person, but can include:

    • Ending of a relationship or marriage
    • Losing or changing job
    • Death of a loved one
    • Developing a serious illness (yourself or a loved one)
    • Being a victim of a crime
    • Having an accident
    • Undergoing a major life change (such as getting married, having a baby. or retiring from a job)
    • Living through a disaster, such as a fire, flood, or hurricane

A person with an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome develops emotional and/or behavioral symptoms as a reaction to a stressful event. These symptoms generally begin within three months of the event and rarely last for longer than six months after the event or situation. In an adjustment disorder, the reaction to the stressor is greater than what is typical or expected for the situation or event. In addition, the symptoms may cause problems with a person’s ability to function; for example, the person may be have trouble with sleep. work, or studying.

An adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is not the same as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD ). PTSD generally occurs as a reaction to a life-threatening event and tends to last longer. Adjustment disorders/stress response syndromes, on the other hand, are short-term, rarely lasting longer than six months.

    Continued

What Are the Symptoms of an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome?

An adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome can have a wide variety of symptoms that are changes from someone’s usual self, which may include:

    • Feeling of hopelessness
    • Sadness
    • Frequent crying
    • Anxiety (nervousness)
    • Worry
    • Headaches or stomachaches
    • Palpitations (an unpleasant sensation of irregular or forceful beating of the heart )
    • Withdrawal or isolation from people and social activities
    • A new pattern of absence from work or school
    • New and uncharacteristic dangerous or destructive behavior, such as fighting, reckless driving, and vandalism
    • Changes in appetite, either loss of appetite, or overeating
    • Problems sleeping
    • Feeling tired or without energy
    • Increase in the use of alcohol or other drugs

Symptoms in children and teens tend to be more behavioral in nature, such as skipping school, fighting, or acting out. Adults, on the other hand, tend to experience more emotional symptoms, such as sadness and anxiety .

How Common Is an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome?

Adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is very common and can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, or lifestyle. Although an adjustment disorder can occur at any age, it is more common at times in life when major transitions occur, such as adolescence, mid-life, and late-life.

How Do I Find Out if I Have an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome?

If you suspect you may have an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome, see your doctor. If symptoms are present, your doctor may perform a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history. Although there are no imaging or lab tests to specifically diagnose an adjustment disorder, the doctor may sometimes use laboratory tests — such as blood tests or imaging studies like CT or MRI scans — to rule out physical illness or other medical causes of changes in mood or behavior (such as head trauma ) as the cause of your symptoms. Your doctor will also look for other mental illnesses, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression. or an anxiety disorder.

Your doctor bases his or her diagnosis of adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome on your report of the intensity and duration of symptoms — including any problems with daily functioning caused by the symptoms. In general, an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is suspected if the level of distress is more intense than would normally be expected, given the stressor, or if the symptoms interfere with normal functioning.

If adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is suspected, your doctor will likely refer you to a psychiatrist, psychologist. or other mental health professional who are trained to help people when they have trouble coping with and managing stressful life events.

    Continued

How Is an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Reponse SyndromeTreated?

Psychotherapy (a type of counseling) is the most common treatment for adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome. Therapy helps the person understand how the stressor has affected his or her life. It also helps the person develop better coping skills. Support groups can also be helpful by allowing the person to discuss his or her concerns and feelings with people who are coping with the same stress. In some cases, medication may be used to help control anxiety symptoms or sleeping problems.

If you have symptoms of adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome, it is very important that you seek medical care. Major depression also could potentially develop in people who are vulnerable to mood disorders. Plus, you may develop a substance abuse problem if you turn to alcohol or drugs to help you cope with stress and anxiety.

Most people with adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome recover completely. In fact, a person who is treated for adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome may learn new skills that actually allow him or her to function better than before the symptoms began.

Can an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome Be Prevented?

There is no known way to prevent adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome. However, strong family and social support can help a person work through a particularly stressful situation or event. The best prevention is early treatment, which can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, and teach new coping skills.

Therapy Degrees & Careers How to Become a Therapist

People who want to work in the mental health field may be unsure of the similarities and differences between psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists. While psychiatrists are medical doctors able to issue prescriptions and psychologists often work in tandem with these professionals to ensure patients receive both psychotherapy and medical treatment, “therapist” is an overarching term for individuals who work with patients to clarify their feelings, mediate tense situations, and provide guidance for life’s decisions. Therapists covered in this guide include individuals who work in mental health or marriage and family therapy. Keep reading to learn about educational requirements as well as what to expect in terms of salary and job growth in the coming years.

    What Does a Therapist Do?

Therapists are classified as mental health professionals; as such, they must complete significant education and training to receive a license to practice. At minimum, most therapists hold a master’s degree and have completed a substantial amount of supervised clinical hours before ever independently seeing a client. Their time in school equips them with the skills and tools needed to assess clients, listen to their troubles, and apply relevant and appropriate treatment methods to a variety of emotional and mental problems.

Therapists may elect to work with many different parts of the population throughout their careers, and specialization areas for them abound. Whether serving military families going through the emotions of another deployment or a couple grieving the loss of a child, therapists are empathetic yet highly professional individuals who help their clients deal with mental and emotional issues arising from a variety of life events. They may choose to go into private practice or serve on a team of other therapists and mental health professionals. Regardless of their setting, those in the field are characterized by their ability to provide thoughtful, constructive therapeutic services.

    Therapist Salaries Job Growth

    Therapist Salaries Across the US

The median salary for mental health counselors and marriage and family counselors is $48,600, with those in the top brackets of the profession commanding salaries of nearly $82,000 annually. Depending on the state where a therapist plans to practice, these numbers can be higher or lower. The map below shows salary figures for the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles in each state.

    Therapist Job Growth

Roles for therapists are growing much faster than the overall national average for jobs, with 31,400 roles – or a 19 percent increase in the field – expected to be added between 2014 and 2024. Use the graph below to see how your state stacks up against these national figures.

    Steps to Becoming a Therapist

    Complete a Bachelor’s Degree

While students applying to master’s level programs are encouraged to have certain prerequisites completed before applying, students at the baccalaureate level may elect to study numerous different disciplines. Regardless of the major they choose, courses in areas of introductory psychology, behavioral disorders, and human development should be incorporated when feasible. Otherwise, they’ll need to take additional classes before applying to advanced programs.

Grades are also important for master’s level programs, so baccalaureate students should be vigilant about maintaining high GPAs – particularly in classes relevant to future studies.

“In 2014 the median earnings of young adults with a bachelor’s degree ($49,900) were 66 percent higher than the medan earnings of young adult hig school completers ($30,000).” – National Center of Education Statistics

    Undertake Relevant Training Program

Options for study at the master’s level tend to be concentrated in programs related to mental health or family and marriage therapy. As discussed in the previous section, these degrees tend to have some prerequisites but they are not as extensive as those required for clinical psychology or psychiatry programs.

According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, individuals aspiring to work in this field have three paths to choose from to become qualified:

    • Compete a master’s degree in family and marriage therapy in two to three years of study,
    • Earn a doctoral degree in family and marriage therapy in three to five years, or
    • Undertake postgraduate clinical training for three to four years.

    Complete Supervised Clinical Work

Either as part of a degree program or a post-degree fellowship, completing supervised clinical experience is a requirement for future licensure. These opportunities – typically called residencies or internships – allow graduates to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from coursework to real-world scenarios requiring a competent and professional therapist. Depending on the state where a therapist-in-training hopes to be licensed, mandated supervised experience typically totals between 2,000 and 4,000 hours.

    Apply for Therapist Licensure

Once supervised hours are completed, the only thing standing between an individual and their ability to see clients is being licensed. Those who want to work as mental health counselors should contact the National Board for Certified Counselors to learn about requirements in their state, while future marriage and family therapists can find more information through the Association of Marital and Family Regulatory Boards. While requirements vary based on an individual state’s requirements, some of steps students commonly must take include:

    • Showing proof of graduation from an accredited advanced degree program
    • Providing evidence of completed supervised hours
    • Passing a national board exam. Mental health counselors take the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification while MFTs take the Examination in Marriage and Family Therapy.
    • Any other requirements specific to certain jurisdictions

The family, which controls more than half of VW shares, has hinted that it does not want to see jobs cut as a result of ‘dieselgate’ scandal

The heads of the Porsche and Piech families that control the majority of Volkswagen Group have signalled their support for the troubled company, which has been rocked by the “dieselgate” emissions scandal.

VW chief executive Matthias Müller was joined by Wolfgang Porsche, chairman of Porsche Autmobil Holding SE, which controls 52.2pc of the car company. when he spoke to thousands of staff at the company’s Wolfsburg base this morning.

“The Porsche and Piech families support job security at Volkswagen (Other OTC: VLKAF – news ) through a stable and successful company,” said Mr Porsche. “We know jobs are an invaluable asset. And this asset can’t simply be gambled away.”

He was joined by fellow Porsche Automobil executive Hans Michel Piech, grandson of VW co-founder Ferdinand Porsche. Louise Kiesling, another descendant of the founding families, was also expected to be at the meeting.

Their appearance marks the first time the powerful family has spoken out since the “dieselgate” scandal broke in September, when VW was found to have fitted “defeat devices” to almost 500,000 cars in the US that allowed them to beat pollution tests.

The company later admitted as many as 11m cars worldwide could be affected, and started an internal investigation into how the scandal took place. This probe has since revealed that cars a further 800,000 cars, some of them petrol powered, had “irregularities” with their carbon dioxide emissions.

The revelations cost former chief executive Martin Winterkorn his job and VW could face multi-billion euro fines, along with huge costs to rectify the issues. So far a €6.7bn provision has been taken, which pushed the company to its first quarterly loss in a decade.

But many analysts think this could be the first in a series of such hits, with some putting a €30bn-plus price tag on resolving the problems.

At an event held by the mayor of Wolfsburg on Tuesday night, Mr Porsche is reported to have indicated that they would support VW despite its troubles.

“The Porsche and Piech families stand by Volkswagen. I am deeply convinced that Volkswagen will weather the current difficult situation. I will personally do my part,” Mr Porsche said, according to Bloomberg.

His support comes at a critical time for the company. Official data on German car sales released on Wednesday showed that although VW remained the country’s biggest selling marque, new registrations dropped by 2pc in November. As a whole the market rose by 8.9pc.

The day before the impact of the scandal was shown in US sales figures, where the number of buyers of VW Group cars which includes Audi – fell by 24.7pc on the previous month.

The company’s troubles have also forced it impose a two-week work stoppage in Wolfsburg over Christmas as VW tries to reduce inventories in the face of falling sales.

The car-maker’s once all-powerful unions have seen their authority reduced by the scandal, amid concerns there could be compulsory job losses.

However, Mr Porsche’s address appears to have eased those fears. The VW works council had asked the family to speak out about jobs at the company and backed his statement.

VW is also reported to have secured a €20bn bridging loan with a syndicate of banks to help it bear the costs of the emissions scandal.

The car maker has also had its credit rating cut by Standard & Poor’s for the second time since the crisis erupted. On Tuesday night the rating agency downgraded Volkswagen to BBB+ from A- with a negative outlook. The move reflects VW’s “tarnished reputation and brand image”, S

15 Best Family Cars of 2015

    Posted: 2/4/2015 8:20:13 PM

Determining the best family car depends largely on what kind of family you have. For example, if you and yours are the outdoorsy types, an SUV may be the best way to go. Urbanites might benefit from a minivan or sedan. Those in between, well, that’s what crossover SUVs are for. The good news is that the days when station wagons were the only choice for families are long gone. The market has responded to these different circumstances with a plethora of shapes and styles to suit virtually any need. Of course, determining the best of these choices is what we do, so we gathered together 23 of the latest and greatest different vehicles from a variety of manufacturers to determine which made the cut. We started with last year’s finalists, and culled those that were either due for imminent replacement, or which had been clearly surpassed by newer vehicles in the segment. To that, we added new vehicles that had come out since last year — including a couple of redesigns — voted on candidates, narrowed the field, carried the one, and ultimately landed on the vehicles you see here.

The final field included three minivans, four compact SUVs, four midsize SUVs, two full-size SUVs, two full-size sedans, and three midsize sedans, the kinds of vehicles that usually come to mind when thinking about family cars. However, this year we also included cars from other categories. First were two full-size pickup trucks, unconventional choices to be sure, but roomy, comfortable, and with seemingly endless cargo space, they were definitely worthy of consideration. On the other end of the spectrum were three compact cars, often the first choice of anybody on a budget.

It came as no surprise that two minivans — the 2015 Honda Odyssey and the 2015 Toyota Sienna — made the family car final cut. The 2015 Nissan Pathfinder and new 2015 Toyota Highlander midsize SUVs also appear on our list of finalists. The Honda CR-V was joined by the new Subaru Outback on our list of small SUVs, and all three midsize sedan candidates — the 2015 Honda Accord, 2015 Hyundai Sonata, and 2015 Toyota Camry — made the cut. The 2015 Chevrolet Impala full-size sedan makes its second appearance, too. In the realm of small cars, both the 2015 Honda Civic and surprisingly flexible 2015 Kia Soul won out. On the other end of the size spectrum, both the 2015 Ram 1500 and new 2015 Ford F-150 full-size trucks we tested were deemed worthy of family duty. Finally, the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe made the list.

It’s important to note that the eight runners up in our test are still solid choices for family haulers, otherwise we wouldn’t have considered them in the first place. However, as family cars, they were outpaced by others in the field, either due to a lack of features, less than ideal packaging, or by simply being too old. Still, if none of our finalists tickles your fancy, our runners up are still worth a look.

    Comfort and Driving

Comfort plays a key role in any car, and it goes double for a family car. After all, if you, your spouse and your kids aren’t comfortable, it’s going to be a long, long drive to Grandma’s, no matter how nifty the features may be. We sat in all the seats, took a close look at interior quality, considered how easy it was for everyone to get in and out, and also listened carefully to see how quiet each car was at speed.

Similarly, we paid close attention to how each car felt on the road. Granted, this is a little subjective, but a family car with a smooth and well-controlled ride is less likely to bring on Timmy’s motion sickness, and anything that prevents that is a winner. There are also other more practical considerations, such as how maneuverable a vehicle is in a parking lot, how easy it is to see out the windows in traffic, whether it had enough power, handling and braking to get out of emergency situations, and lastly, if it was any fun.

    Safety

Virtually every car on our list boasts very good crash test scores. More importantly, active safety systems are becoming commonplace on more and more vehicles, and at more reasonable prices. That means things like collision and blind-spot alerts, backup cameras, lane-keeping assists, and other computerized systems were an important consideration. In fact, it’s gotten to the point where if features like backup cameras and blind-spot alerts aren’t standard, we’re a little surprised.

    Child Seats

While not every family needs to carry baby seats everywhere, how well they fit is an important consideration for many buyers. After all, they’re mandatory for smaller kids, and frankly, what kind of parent wouldn’t use one anyhow, regardless of the law? We chose popular child seats from Graco and Safety 1st, and installed them using the available LATCH points in all the vehicles, and like last year, the results were surprising. Remember that if you’re shopping for a new family car to bring your child’s boosters along with you. How well they fit could make or break your decision.

    Cargo Space

There’s more to cargo space than cubic feet of storage, and we went well beyond looking at simple volume measurements. Instead, we stuffed the cargo areas with all manner of items, from golf bags to big coolers to even a bike. We looked at how easy it was to get items in and out, how high off the ground the cargo floor was on SUVs, how easily seats folded down to make more room, and ultimately, how much stuff we could cram inside.

    Rear-Seat Entertainment

This is an interesting category, as some on staff think that stand-alone rear-seat entertainment systems will soon go by the wayside as more cars adopt 4G LTE and wireless hotspot options. Still, there’s something to be said for plugging in your family’s Wii on a long road trip, and the inclusion of a built-in rear-seat screen is still an advantage. Beyond simply existing, we also checked out what could be plugged into the system, how easy it was to use, if the screen blocked the rear view, and more.

    Extra Features

Most every vehicle on this list nails the basics, and often what separates winners from runners-up is the little things. How easy it is to fold seats to access the third row, for example, or a cleverly designed storage can make or break similar vehicles. Advanced electronics like adaptive cruise control or an all-around-view camera can put a smile on a buyer’s face, and a signature on the dotted line. We pushed every button, pulled every lever, and stuffed every storage compartment to see what made each vehicle special.
