about used cars

If you’ve come here looking for a used or certified pre-owned car, truck, SUV, crossover, hatchback, hybrid or convertible, then you’re in the right place. Edmunds has everything you need to know about buying or selling a used vehicle, including Carfax vehicle history reports, dealership listings and pricing information, expert car reviews, consumer car reviews, car dealership reviews, car price comparisons, car appraisal calculators, images and videos, technical features and specs, user forums and more.

At Edmunds, you’ll be able to browse thousands of used cars, trucks and SUVs for sale with special offers, appraise your current car, and research the car, SUV or truck of your dreams. You can limit your search to certified pre-owned (or CPO) vehicles for sale and be a click away from articles by our experts that will give you the best car shopping and buying tips and advice. Let’s take a closer look at each of these aids to easier used-car shopping.

The INVENTORY tab at the top of the page allows you to browse used cars for sale from popular makes such as Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Infiniti, Acura and Subaru. The inventory tool allows you to cast a much wider net than simply visiting your local dealership’s website. Start with the make and model of the vehicle that you’re interested in. You’ll have the option to refine your search by price, distance, model year and mileage. If you’re looking for specific options or features, a certain trim level or a specific color, there are more advanced search filters available, including engine type, fuel type, drivetrain, powertrain, airbags, air-conditioning and much more. After you find the car, SUV, truck or hybrid that you’re interested in, select the listing to check out the VIN details page for that vehicle and get more information. There you’ll find a description of the vehicle from the dealer, vehicle features and options, contact information for that dealership, dealer reviews, a ballpark insurance estimate, and a link to see a Carfax vehicle history report.

The APPRAISE tab at the top of the page lets you enter your car’s basic information, odometer reading, trim level, and overall condition. Then Edmunds provides you with the True Market Value (TMV) for your used car or vehicle. Edmunds’s True Market Value or used car value is is a great starting point for negotiation of a used-car sale between a private buyer and seller. This is an “as is” value that does not include any warranties. The final sales price depends on the car’s actual condition and local market factors. You can use this used car value estimate to price your car for sale or to negotiate a trade-in for a new, CPO, or previously owned car for sale from a local dealer. The used car value estimate is also useful for assessing retail pricing at a car dealer. You can try it out by clicking the “APPRAISE” tab, above. Once you enter your vehicle details, you will receive three estimates for your used car’s value: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you for your used car; “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the pre-owned vehicle yourself; and “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this used model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealership might sell it for as a certified pre-owned vehicle.

The RESEARCH tab points you to our expert analysis of the make and model of the car you select. You can read our editors’ reviews and learn about each generation of the vehicle you’re interested in. From there, you can narrow the focus of your car buying research by selecting a particular model year and learning more by checking out photos of the cars, researching local dealership listings, car valuation, consumer reviews, editors’ reviews, pros & cons, features & specs, and safety information. That’s a world of information. And we’ve put it all right at your fingertips.

Are you thinking about trading in your vehicle at the dealership or selling it yourself? Find out what your used car is worth with our True Market Value appraisal tool. Enter the year, make and model to get started. Make sure you know the options on your vehicle and the current odometer reading. Be honest about the condition level. Most cars will fall in the “average” to “clean” range.

The appraisal tool will give you three prices: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you. “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the vehicle yourself. “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealer might sell it for as a CPO vehicle.

If you are hesitant about buying a traditional used car, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. These vehicles tend to be newer, have gone through a more detailed inspection process and come with a limited warranty. The Edmunds inventory tool will have an option to sort the list to show only CPO vehicles. You can also go directly to the CPO cars page.

Explore Car-Buying Articles: If you’re unsure about the next steps in buying a used car — or car buying in general — Edmunds has research articles that can help. Is This the Best Search Engine Ever for New & Used Cars?

Wise Bread Picks

The site is one I found quite by accident. I’m not in the market for a used car, I was actually looking for a quote from Bill Shakespeare’s The Tempest and stumbled upon this gem. Ahh, I love the Internet. The site is called AutoTempest.com. It’s only in Beta right now, but the results are awesome!

In the past, when I was searching for a used car, I would bring up the usual suspects cars.com, kbb.com, edmunds.com. With three windows or tabs open, I would flick between them all looking for the best price, the lowest miles, and the best financing option available.

That was time-consuming and a hassle. But I never thought any more about it until I started pushing the buttons of this new site. (It’s like Kayak.com but for new and used cars.) As regular Wise Bread readers know, I’m a huge fan of sites and gadgets that save you time and money. Put a check mark next to both of those categories for AutoTempest.com.

The interface is simple enough. Enter the make and model of the car you’re looking for, along with the location, year, price and mileage. Sure, those are the usual features, but AutoTempest goes a little further.

With the advanced search, you can add-in transmission, body style, seller type, and even choose to search collector or niche sites.

After your data is input, you hit search. And then you’re greeted with the results from around seven different auto-buying websites. One includes craigslist, and when you get to that page the results will be further chopped down into areas in your state. You know what they say, location is everything.

I’d like to point out, as always, that this is not a paid endorsement or even one that was requested. When I find services or products I genuinely like or enjoy, I think Wise Bread readers will as well. And that’s why I’m passing this on to you.

As the site is in Beta, it’s also a great chance to kick the tires (ouch, no pun intended) and let the maker’s of AutoTempest know what you think of the site. what is working, and what isn’t. Hopefully, it will help them create a more robust option for the official launch.

So there you have it. If you’re looking for a new motor, try it out. I hope it saves you a bunch of time and money on your next vehicle. I know I’ll be using it to find mine.

How Does a New Engine on a Used Car Affect Price?

Enhanced Performance

A brand new, factory-made engine in a used car is definitely a selling point. A used car with a new engine can command a higher price than the same car with the original engine. This is obviously because of the fact that the new engine will have none of the wear and tear of the original engine and should, therefore, enhance the vehicle’s overall performance.

Explaining Used Car Price

Organizations such as Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book use depreciation models to determine the current value of a used vehicle based on the original manufacturer’s suggested retail price and current operating condition. So, a new engine in a used car that was once in poor condition may elevate the condition to good or very good and thereby increase the selling price that could be offered.

Warning

Just because the engine is new does not necessarily mean that the vehicle will sell for a price any higher than the Kelley Blue Book value. This is because those prices assume that the vehicle is already in good working condition, with an engine that is functioning well. The addition of a new engine does not make the entire car “new” and it cannot be sold as such.

JBoss Drools Tutorial #drools #rule #engine

#

This tutorial is updated with the release 6 of JBoss Drools.

What is a Rule Engine ?

The term Rule Engine can be referred to any system that uses rules, in any form, that can be applied to data to produce outcomes; it may refer to simple systems like form validation or more complex systems like dynamic expression engines. In a few words a Rule engine allow you to say “What to do” and not “How to do it”.

Why using a Rule Engine ?

Rule systems are capable of solving very, very hard problems, providing an explanation of how the solution was arrived at and why each “decision” along the way was made.
Among the main benefit of a Rule engine can be mentioned:

  • Logic and Data Separation: Breaking your domain objects from business rules can lead to a mach easier to maintain application as it can shield from changes in the future, since the logic is all laid out in rules.
  • Speed and Scalability: Many times we apply “if” conditions that we didn’t really need. The Rete algorithm, as implemented by Drools, replaces all of the if. then statements with an optimized network.
  • Centralization of Knowledge: By using rules, you create a repository of knowledge (a knowledgebase) which can be considered as a single point of truth, for business policy (for instance) – ideally rules are so readable that they can also serve as documentation
  • Tool Integration: Writing rules means also to get accustomed with Rule language, validation and debugging. Eclipse provide an excellent tool to deliver and test your Rules.
  • Understandable Rules:JBoss Drools rules can make it easy to express solutions to difficult problems and consequently have those solutions verified (rules are much easier to read then code).Often, business users are more comfortable with expressing things that they know to be true, than to express things in an if. then format. Examples of things that you might hear from a business expert are:

We need to buy that estate if the price is not over 1000000 $ and estate agency doesn’t claim more then 5000 $
We buy shares when the price goes over 15 Euro before next week

By focusing on what we know to be true, rather than the mechanics of how to express it in Java code, the above statements are much more clean than exposing it with traditional “if. then” clause

Developing applications with JBoss Drools

In order to run a basic example of JBoss Drools you can use two main approaches:

1) Download the Drools Runtime from http://www.drools.org/download/download.html and use the libraries contained in the Runtime to execute your Rules

2) Use a Maven project and add Drools dependencies in it.

To get started very quickly we will use the latter approach, therefore the only thing needed is a JDK and Maven installed. In our example we will use as IDE JBoss Developer Studio with the BPM Plugin installed. However that’s not strictly needed, also a basic Maven project with the right dependencies will work.

Installing the BPM Plugin (optional)

The BPM plugin can be easily installed from the JBoss Central UI by searching for “drools ” projects:

This will trigger the installation of all required Plugins for creating Drools projects. The advantage of Installing this plugin is that you can use the IDE to edit new Rules, Debug or Test them.

Now restart JBoss Developer Studio for changes to take effect.

An Hello World Drool Project

With the Drools plugin activated, you will be able to create a New Drools project from the “New. ” Menu

Click Next. In the following Window, choose the initial project contents. We will just need a blank project with the correct Maven folders:

Finish off, by choosing the Maven GroupId, ArtifactId and Version and how to Build the Project. As we said, we will use Maven to build the Project. If you want to use the Drools Runtime, you will be requested to install and point to the Drools Home directory.

Now that you have a basic project, we will add two core pieces:

  1. A simple Rule which interacts with a Java instance (a fact) passed to the Rule
  2. A Java main class to execute the Rule

Let’s add at first a new Rule. From the File menu choose to add a new Rule:

As you can see, you will be requested to enter a Rule file name and the Type of resource Rule. In our case we will create the Rule.drl file name as part of a rule package. The rule will be in the rules package name. Here is the simple Rule:

This example is provided with 2 Rules: the first Rule (“HelloWorld”) checks the value of the field status in the class Message. if the value equals to the constant Message.HELLO then a new value for status is setted and a goodbye message is printed.

On the other hand the “Good bye” Rule will check as well the value of field status. If it’s equal to Message.GOODBYE then we’ve reached the bottom of our Rules and we exit printing a message.

Everything clear. maybe not. Let’s see closer a few pieces of this Rule:

This is the Pattern element: the most important Conditional Element. It consists of zero or more constraints and has an optional pattern binding. A constraint can be either a Field Constraint, Preducate or a Constraint Group. Constraints can be separated by the following symbols ‘,’, ‘ ‘ or ‘||’.

So this simply says that the Rule will be activated for each Message object inserted into the working memory whose status is Message.HELLO. Besides that, two variable binds are created: “message” variable is bound to the message attribute and “m” variable is bound to the object matched pattern itself.

And the dialect “mvel” keyword ?

When writing Rules you have the option to use Java Language and MVEL sytnax to modify objects passed to the Working memory. MVEL’s syntax allows you to apply a block of setters in one statement, with the engine being automatically notified of the changes at the end of the block.

Ok, so we’ve our Rule. We will need to add the Message class which will be our “fact” transferred to the Drools Runtime:

In order to execute them we’ll create a Java Class named App :

This class does the following actions:

  1. Bootstraps the Rule Engine session. The KieSession represents a running instance of the Rule Engine with a specific configuration and set of rules. It holds the evaluation algorithm used to match the rules against our domain objects.
  2. Lets the Rule Engine to know about our data. We are responsible for providing all the information to the engine so that it can operate on it. This is done through the insert() method on KieSession.
  3. Next, if the information that we provided matches with one or more available rules, we will get Matches. Calling the fireAllRules() method will execute these matches.

The last thing we need to do in order to complete our project, is a file in the src/main/resources/META-INF/ directory called kmodule.xml. This file is used to configure how to load the rules defined in the project in the rule engine. For now, the content of kmodule.xml will be quite simple as we will be using all the default configurations. Here is a sample content of it:

Here is how your project should look like:

Build the project with:

And you can run it with:

When executed the output will be:

This is a very trivial example just to get accustomed with JBoss Drools environment: in the following articles we’ll see how a rules engine can significantly reduce the complexity of components that implement the business-rules logic in your Java applications. By expressing your rules using JBoss Drools declarative approach your application has higher chance of being more maintainable and extensible than one that doesn’t.

Running the Project without JBoss Developer Studio

If you are not using JBoss Developer Studio or Eclipse to develop your project, as simple environment Maven based will work. Just create a new Maven project with a basic archetype:

Now, you have to include manually the required Class files, the Rules and the configuration files. Finish off by setting the correct dependencies in your pom.xml:

Modified Car Insurance: Insurance with Nitrous Oxide Injection and other modified Cars and Bikes

Modified Car or Bike Insurance, and insuring with Nitrous Oxide Injection.

OK how do you go about insuring your modified car? What about that newly fitted Nitrous Kit? Or the V8 you accidentally fitted while you were not concentrating?

On the face of it its very difficult! But let me tell you a story. Elsewhere on this site there is a picture of the engine bay of my old Ford Sierra 1.6L car with a Rover V8 fitted with Nitrous injection.

This cost me LESS to insure than it did when it was a stock 1.6L car!
Much to my surprise! How come. You may well ask! Well it’s like this. There are lots of options when you insure a car.

First be prepared to do a LOT of research and ask people who already run modified vehicles. Ask at Custom Car Shows, ask at the Drag Strip ETC. They all manage somehow.

I rang Adrian Flux – a company that was started by a bunch of Hot Rodders and Custom car freaks or so I was told! They all had the same problems, their normal car insurers would fall off the phone laughing or hang up! Mine did too.

AND they cancelled my existing policy from that moment. Adrian Flux insurance charged me LESS money than the other big major insurance companies did for a standard car! I am not trying to get you to call them and have nothing whatsoever to do with them, just giving an example of companies that are good on price in certain narrow niches . In the case of Custom Cars, they were very cheap.

Reasons? They realized that far from being more likely to claim, they were more likely to do extremely low mileage, in good summer weather, and drive very carefully! So would you if you had a one off home built show car that took you thousands of hours work! And they would also be less likely to be stolen, by their very nature and because most lived in heated carpeted garages! So they could insure these Custom vehicles very cheaply.

I agreed to, a low annual mileage, high excess, garaged at night, and I did not tell them initially about the Nitrous system. They only needed a good description and a photograph and I was covered. For less than 200 third party fire and theft (in 1995. I forget). Later on I told them I had fitted Nitrous and they simply made a note of it. No price changes. This they saw as a custom car and so they insured it as one.

If you however took a boy racers h o tted up front wheel drive hatchback (neons, alloys, K N Filter, HUGE exhaust, young driver etc) then they would undoubtedly add in the date too! This car is LIKELY to be abused, driven in all weather, driven fast, stolen, left parked in the street, So the insurance company, ANY insurance company has to charge enough to cover all the claims!

So if you fit Nitrous to one of these (boy racer cars) then its best to do a LOT of research first! There ARE insurance companies that will cover you, since you are doing nothing wrong regarding the law, but they are small, hard to find, and will cost you more. Remember half a day and 20 worth of phone calls is well worth while, because it can save you hundreds!

You could I suppose fit a nitrous system, but not connect up the bottle while using the car on the public highway, and use it ONLY on the drag strip, or racetrack. Or you MAY if you are lucky find your existing insurance company either does not care, or charges only a little extra. Some add a percentage related to the power increase however it is obtained.

This modified car lark also includes such things as wheels, or ANY non standard part. And how many of you bother to tell the insurance about these other mods? Well you should! Its exactly the same thing!

Other options include motor trader policies that allow you to drive any car, and other variations on this theme.

I also used to have a Norwich Union unlimited rider policy (Covered any bike of any capacity – no specific details required) – this allowed me to ride a two stage nitrous injected 1135cc Turbo bike, for the same price as a big touring bike. About the only part on this bike that was not modded was the frame. They don’t do these Norwich Union Rider Policies now unfortunately. Then there is the old can drive any other car not belonging to you line in most insurance policies.

But whatever you do, don’t use Nitrous on the street without proper cover! Its not impossible to get cover, but it may involve a little work to find the best option. Without telling your insurance company, you are technically not covered! If you had an accident, and the assessor from the insurance company saw it he would probably void your insurance! Just as he could with wheels, or any undisclosed modifications.

It may help to read the forums at www.noswizard.co.uk which are quite busy. Lots of guys on that forum have cover with companies as like Direct Line, and other common names. But normally they will tell you no! Just insist on speaking to someone that knows a bit more than the phone line or websites email front line of sales people. Trevor at HighPower has an agreement with one big Insurance company broker (actually Adrian Flux Insurance) to cover cars that have his Nitrous Injection fitted. The same company may cover you too? They did cover me for 7 years.

Check Google’s results for insurance and ring them all – there are hundreds to try! If the first few Car Insurers refuse you, or quote daft prices, then keep going! The biggest, that advertise the most such as Churchill, Direct Line, etc, are probably going to be the most expensive here, and the small specialist (and hard to find) companies much cheaper and less likely to be stressed out by modifications. The big ones seem only to cater for normal cars on their computer screens.

If anyone has any cover that is reading this page could you please send me the details so I can build a database of companies and vehicle specs, area, policy detail, and prices? Its for your own good! — Please do it!
