Education Requirements for an RN

There are generally three educational approaches to becoming a RN. RNs usually train by completing a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program in nursing. Less commonly, RNs prepare for the occupation by earning a diploma in nursing. Graduates of any of these programs are generally eligible for licensure and entry-level employment as RNs.

Bachelor’s Degree

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), RNs who graduate from Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs may see greater advancement opportunities than associate’s degree or diploma holders. These 4-year degree programs are generally more comprehensive, focusing on human development and behavioral sciences applicable to the profession.

BSN program curricula are typically divided into two parts. The initial two years focus on general science instruction, such as courses in physiology, organic chemistry and psychology. In the final two years, students gain instruction in nursing practice and may study pediatrics, chronic disease and mental health nursing. Students also gain supervised clinical experience in health care facilities during the last two years of study.

Associate’s Degree

Some RNs hold Associate’s Degrees in Nursing (ADNs). Associate’s degree programs are designed to last two years; however, the American Nurses Association (ANA) reports that many programs took students three or more years to complete. ADN programs focus on technical applications of nursing, and instruction takes place in both classrooms and clinical settings. While these degree programs are the most widely available training programs, the ANA states that many RNs who hold ADNs return to school to earn at least bachelor’s degrees.

Diploma

Another education option is the Diploma in Nursing program. These programs are the least-common of all nurse training programs and are administered in health care facilities. They consist of three or more years of classroom and clinical instruction. As with ADN degree holders, many RNs with diplomas eventually pursue undergraduate degrees in nursing.

Licensure for an RN

All states require RNs to obtain licensure after completion of an approved nursing program. Licensing requirements vary by state, but all licensing boards require RNs to pass the National Council Licensure Examination- Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) before practicing in the profession. Developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the NCLEX-RN covers four basic categories, including psychosocial and physiological integrity, healthcare environment safety and health promotion. Some states and employers require RNs to participate in continuing education.

Salary and Career Information

The BLS estimated faster-than-average employment growth of 16% for RNs in the years 2014-2024. The BLS also reported that RNs earned a median annual wage of $67,490 in May 2015.

While a 2- to 3-year diploma or an associate’s degree program might be sufficient education to become an RN, students may find their chances for advancement and certainly for specialization will increase if you hold a 4-year BSN. At any rate, before you’re allowed to practice in any U.S. state, territory or the District of Columbia, you must sit for and pass the NCLEX-RN. Depending on your state of residence, you may be required to complete continuing education credits in order to maintain your license to practice.

    Stony Brook University offers two post-master’sadvanced graduate certificate programs that lead to certification in areas of school district, building and business leadership.

    • The Educational Leadership (EDL) program prepares K-12 educators for advancement to positions at both the school district (SDL) and school building (SBL) levels. Such positions include superintendent of schools, district superintendent, assistant superintendent, principal, assistant principal, department chairperson, or athletic director. As of Fall 2007, this is the first program of its kind in New York State that serves as a pathway for certification at both the district and building levels.

    The American Board of Clinical Psychology (ABCP), which is a branch of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), certifies clinical psychologists. However, in order to be eligible members must hold a doctorate degree in clinical psychology, complete an internship in professional psychology and have three years of supervised experience in clinical psychology.     Admission Requirements

    Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

    Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

    • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
    • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
    • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
    • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
    • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
    • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
    • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
    • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

    Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

    Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

    Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

    The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

    Additional Testing

    Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.

    Pending Status

    Doctoral and international students are not eligible for Pending Status .

    International Students

    Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

    • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
    • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
    • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
    • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
    • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

    All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. I-20 forms may be issued only after University acceptance is granted and will remain in effect only for students who continue to make satisfactory progress as full-time students in an accepted university program. The program length may vary for each student.

    Volcano Types

    The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that there are about 65 active volcanoes in the United States and its territories. The Dynamic maps viewer (shown at right) provides an interactive presentation of potentially active volcanoes in the 48 continguous states.

    Volcanoes are distinguished by their eruption style, composition, and structure. Volcanoes act differently and form differently because they are made up of different types of rocks and minerals. Below is a description of common volcano types that can be recognized as distinguishable land formations.

    For more than 200 years keen observers have noted that some volcanic eruptions affect weather and climate. Scientists report that large eruptions at low latitudes can cause the greatest global climate change. Weaker eruptions send their eruptive materials only into the troposphere, where wind and rain quickly remove them. High latitude eruptions send their materials into only one hemisphere.

    Based on this information and the nature of different volcano types presented below, do you think that certain types of volcanoes are more likely to cause climate change when they erupt?     Volcanoes have many shapes and sizes, but the following three types are most important: stratovolcanoes, shields, and supervolcanoes. Use the Dynamic map tool to find further illustrations of volcanoes described in this overview of volcano types.

    Stratovolcanoes (Composite Volcanoes)

    Many of Earth’s most beautiful mountains are stratovolcanoes also referred to as composite volcanoes. The stratovolcanoes are made up of layers of lava flows interlayed with sand- or gravel-like volcanic rock called cinders or volcanic ash. These volcano land formations are typically 10-20 miles across and up to 10,000 or more feet tall. This type of volcano has steeper slopes of 6-10 degrees on its flanks and as much as a 30 degree slope near the top. Stratovolcanoes show interlayering of lava flows and typically up to 50 percent pyroclastic material, which is why they are sometimes called composite volcanoes.

    Pyroclastic flows are high-density mixtures of hot, dry rock fragments and hot gases that move away from the vent that erupted them at high speeds. They may result from the explosive eruption of molten or solid rock fragments, or both. They may also result from the nonexplosive eruption of lava when parts of dome or a thick lava flow collapses down a steep slope. Most pyroclastic flows consist of two distinguishable flowing mixtures: a basal flow of coarse fragments that moves along the ground and a turbulent cloud of ash that rises above the basal flow. Ash may fall from this cloud over a wide area downwind from the pyroclastic flow.

    The Department of Psychology at Jackson State University is a unit of the School of Social and Behavioral Science in the College of Liberal Arts.

    The Department of Psychology is committed to enhancing knowledge of psychological principles and practices through scholarship, research, undergraduate service-learning, and graduate clinical training. In addition, the faculty to promote the discipline of Psychology through professional service at the national and local levels. The Department has 12 faculty members, all of whom have diverse training and research interests. We currently offer two degree programs:

    Jackson State University first received American Psychological Association accreditation for its Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program in 2001, but its history stretches back to 1877 and includes a rich heritage as a coeducational historically black institution. Founded in Natchez, Mississippi as a seminary to educate ministers and teachers, the original goals of the school encompassed expanding the opportunities for freed American Negroes living in the Deep South through moral, intellectual, and religious education, thus providing its graduates with the ability to serve society and become leaders within their communities. This grounding vision has shaped each step of JSU s development, from its early move to the city of Jackson through its evolution into being far more than a teacher s college. These principles impacted how psychology came to be taught at the institution and spurred its search for continued excellence through expansion into graduate programs.

    By the time JSU officially gained university status from Mississippi s state legislature in 1979, the Department of Psychology s primary focus on research made its move to the School of Liberal Arts a natural transition. Then, Dr. Janet St. Lawrence, a faculty member and clinical psychologist at JSU, began to investigate HIV and STD issues in vulnerable populations during the advent of the AIDS epidemic. Out of this work with those in drug treatment, people contending with incarceration, or people from other at-risk groups, came the genesis of the Community Health Program (CHP). This program became the foremost research division within the Psychology Department and works to provide community service while training students and conducting original studies, which gain national attention. Additionally, during this time period, Dr. Cynthia Ford designed a course to teach psychology from an afro-centric perspective. This type of enhancement to the curriculum highlights JSU s focus on both cultural and individual diversity and remains a popular elective in the discipline.

    After years of preparing undergraduates to pursue advanced research degrees, JSU began to develop its own plan for graduate study. Spearheading this movement was a working group whose goal was to design a program in clinical psychology that would provide multicultural training. The idea behind such multiculturalism is that the most effective clinical psychologists are those who have separated themselves from their personal biases and that this can only occur through in depth understanding of other cultures. In 1995, program was launched with a charter class of five students. APA accreditation then followed in 2001, and the first dissertation defense occurred in 2002. The concept of multicultural training remains a primary mission and requires the program actively to support those from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds while ensuring that even the most traditional of graduate students becomes immersed in as many different environments as possible. This occurs most directly through practica, externships, and field research experience with underserved people; in the area of Jackson, this most often means rural and African-American populations.

    Bachelor Of Science in Educational Psychology

    Educational Psychology is an undergraduate degree program in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Foundations. It leads to a B.S. degree in educational psychology and is generally referred to as the EPY major.

    Educational psychology is the science of learners and learning, including their differences and their development as they grow and change. These differences include changes that are biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial. Educational psychologists are interested in areas that affect students’ learning and achievement; such that they are interested in understanding motivation, individual differences in abilities; student exceptionalities, creative thinking, and personality. Educational psychology also involves learning the techniques of the scientific method that apply to our field — using tests and measurements, statistics, and research methodology. Thus, educational psychology involves a wide range of topics about people, and your major courses are designed to help you learn about these topics while also helping you learn the methods in how knowledge is gained in the field.

    Educational psychology is a Bachelor of Science degree program within the College of Education at Mississippi State University. It is designed for people who enjoy helping and working with others. It offers:

    • a non-teaching major that does not lead to certification as a teacher (though it is possible to seek alternate certification upon graduation);
    • enriching courses in human growth and development, learning, measurement, personality theory, exceptional populations, research methods, and psychology;
    • a curriculum that prepares you to work in a number of different positions within many helping professions.

    You should consider educational psychology if:

    • you are a people person, but you do not want to be a teacher in K-12 settings;
    • you are interested in working with people of all ages;
    • you would like to work with individuals in challenging settings.

    Curriculum

    You will complete the following as part of your 124 hour degree program:

    • a general education core of 48 hours
    • a 43 hour curriculum in educational psychology
    • and a concentration area that you choose (18-24 hours) which consists of support courses that complement the major and your career goals.

    Planning for your B.S. Degree:

    • To graduate from MSU, you will need 124 hours. “Hours” refers to courses that carry credits. For courses taken at MSU, you can usually tell by looking at the last digit of a course (for example, EPY 2513 would carry 3 hours of credit).
    • You must have a 2.25 on a 4.00 scale to enter and graduate from the program.
    • To finish the B.S. degree in EPY in four years with no summer school, you will need to take 15-16 hours each regular semester. If this is your first term at MSU and you’ve not yet taken a full load at a senior college, it would be a good idea to limit your first semester to 12 hours or 15 hours maximum.
    • You may only transfer 62 hours from junior or community colleges.
    • It is most important that you get to know your advisor and see that faculty member during preregistration times. Your degree program is your responsibility. Make sure your folder contains all transcripts. Keep your program up to date each time your visit your advisor.
