Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Logistics and Supply Chain Management is a field of study of supply chain networks that organizations use to acquire, produce, and deliver goods and services all over the world. Our program is holistic because of the integration of the sources, production, distribution, and reverse logistics processes. We focus extensively on management information systems that are a key critical enabler of efficiency, effectiveness, and responsiveness. Our faculty, both fulltime as well as adjunct, remain active in the logistics programs through their leadership of organizations and programs in both the private as well as the public sector. This allows our students to understand the theoretical aspects of logistics and supply chain management while also gaining a keen understanding of how it is applied in business settings today. Our faculty collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines as well as with practicing senior managers in both government and the private sector.

Our focus is to prepare students for technical, functional, and leadership positions at top-tier businesses and government agencies. Our students work closely with faculty from the onset of their program to ensure the best preparation for life after graduation, including working on research projects that could lead to publication in academic journals. There are great universities across America with logistics and supply chain programs similar to ours. What distinguishes Athens State is our faculty; and, when coupled with the support resources available to students, there is no university that will better prepare students to be highly competitive to take advantage of great career opportunities in many business fields.

Students will learn how to plan and forecast demand for products and services and gain an understanding of operations involving the movement of materials from raw materials for production to providing the finished product to the end consumer. After gaining an understanding of the supply chain function, students will learn how to manage the logistical movement of goods and products to include the transportation and services involved. An emphasis will be placed on understanding these functions within the government setting.

Teacher Certification

Here are some reasons why teachers say they choose this noblest of professions:

  1. Make a difference in the life of a child
  2. Ability to give endless possibilities for success
  3. Reap daily rewards of joy
  4. Opportunities to lead
  5. Build stronger communities
  6. Share a passion for learning

Take it from one of Oklahoma’s best teachers:

“Teaching is one of the most challenging careers; yet it is one of the most important professions. Being a teacher is about making positive, lasting impressions and indelible marks. Creating the foundation for my students that will build the rest of their lives upon is an honor. Without teachers, there would be no other profession.”

New background check rule for the dual results policy-Effective July 1st, 2017

Senate Bill 29 alleviates the fingerprinting process for new school district employees that meet the following criteria. ; “provided that a board of education shall not be required to obtain a new criminal history record check for an individual who has obtained certification from the State Department of Education within the previous twelve (12) months.”

What this means:

A school district that hires a new employee who has been certified for the first time in Oklahoma within 12 months of their hire date does not have to conduct a new background check on the employee.

Furthermore, as of July 1, 2017, the Oklahoma State Department of Education will no longer be allowed to disseminate the results of certification background checks to public school districts (commonly referred to as dual results) except for the following conditions; if the applicant wishes to be fingerprinted for both certification and employment, this must be made known at the time they are fingerprinted. The applicant must provide a completed Application for National Criminal History Record Check along with their fingerprints. This process can only be completed by visiting the Department of Education in person or by mailing in fingerprint cards with this completed form http://sde.ok.gov/sde/sites/ok.gov.sde/files/AppCriminalHist.pdf from the district.

In December 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). As a result of this action, Oklahoma has been afforded a transition year for the 2016-17 school year while ESSA guidelines are established. Please follow the links below for guidance on how regular education and special education teaching assignments should be made for this school year.

Education Requirements for an RN

There are generally three educational approaches to becoming a RN. RNs usually train by completing a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program in nursing. Less commonly, RNs prepare for the occupation by earning a diploma in nursing. Graduates of any of these programs are generally eligible for licensure and entry-level employment as RNs.

Bachelor’s Degree

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), RNs who graduate from Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs may see greater advancement opportunities than associate’s degree or diploma holders. These 4-year degree programs are generally more comprehensive, focusing on human development and behavioral sciences applicable to the profession.

BSN program curricula are typically divided into two parts. The initial two years focus on general science instruction, such as courses in physiology, organic chemistry and psychology. In the final two years, students gain instruction in nursing practice and may study pediatrics, chronic disease and mental health nursing. Students also gain supervised clinical experience in health care facilities during the last two years of study.

Associate’s Degree

Some RNs hold Associate’s Degrees in Nursing (ADNs). Associate’s degree programs are designed to last two years; however, the American Nurses Association (ANA) reports that many programs took students three or more years to complete. ADN programs focus on technical applications of nursing, and instruction takes place in both classrooms and clinical settings. While these degree programs are the most widely available training programs, the ANA states that many RNs who hold ADNs return to school to earn at least bachelor’s degrees.

Diploma

Another education option is the Diploma in Nursing program. These programs are the least-common of all nurse training programs and are administered in health care facilities. They consist of three or more years of classroom and clinical instruction. As with ADN degree holders, many RNs with diplomas eventually pursue undergraduate degrees in nursing.

Licensure for an RN

All states require RNs to obtain licensure after completion of an approved nursing program. Licensing requirements vary by state, but all licensing boards require RNs to pass the National Council Licensure Examination- Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) before practicing in the profession. Developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the NCLEX-RN covers four basic categories, including psychosocial and physiological integrity, healthcare environment safety and health promotion. Some states and employers require RNs to participate in continuing education.

Salary and Career Information

The BLS estimated faster-than-average employment growth of 16% for RNs in the years 2014-2024. The BLS also reported that RNs earned a median annual wage of $67,490 in May 2015.

While a 2- to 3-year diploma or an associate’s degree program might be sufficient education to become an RN, students may find their chances for advancement and certainly for specialization will increase if you hold a 4-year BSN. At any rate, before you’re allowed to practice in any U.S. state, territory or the District of Columbia, you must sit for and pass the NCLEX-RN. Depending on your state of residence, you may be required to complete continuing education credits in order to maintain your license to practice.

Nursing – Professional Education and Development

Hershey Medical Center offers a variety of tuition programs intended to enhance the recruitment, retention and advancement of those employees interested in attaining a nursing degree, as well as advancing their nursing career. Employees interested in becoming nurses may benefit from the tuition reimbursement program. The nursing educational assistance program (SEIU, Article 34) and educational privileges at Penn State can assist current nurses with advancing their nursing careers.

    Tuition reimbursement program

All full-time non-bargained employees of Hershey Medical Center have the option of attending a college or university of their choice (other than Penn State) and working toward a degree or certificate program, which is mutually beneficial to both the employee and Hershey Medical Center. The employee is reimbursed 85 percent of his or her tuition up to $5,250 per calendar year. Employees must submit grades and proof of payment at the end of each course for reimbursement. Many of our current Hershey Medical Center employees who are interested in pursuing a nursing degree use this program to complete their pre-requisite courses. The policy explaining this can be found under Human Resources, Policy HR58. Teamster employees are eligible to receive up to $2,100 for undergraduate courses and up to $2,500 for graduate classes.

    Nursing tuition program

Administered through the Department of Nursing, this program allows both part-time and full-time nurses working toward an advanced nursing degree to be reimbursed 100 percent of tuition only. Grants and scholarships are not eligible for reimbursement. Full-time nurses qualify for up to $5,250 reimbursement in a calendar year, and part-time employees qualify for up to $1,500. Employees must submit grades and proof of payment at the end of the course for reimbursement. Information regarding this program is located in the SEIU Handbook, page 71, article 34, Educational Assistance, or refer to policy HR66.

    Educational privileges

Educational privileges allow all full-time Hershey Medical Center employees to attend any Penn State campus and receive a 75 percent tuition discount. Classes are offered locally and current BSNs utilize this program to pursue master’s level programs. The policy explaining this can be found under Human Resources, Policy HR35.

Programs may be subject to certain levels of taxation.

The tuition application process has been reorganized to allow easy access to all education benefits and opportunities with a single contact in Human Resources to guide you. For additional information or questions regarding any of these programs, contact Human Resources, at 717-531-3831 .

    Nurse anesthetist education expense program

This program provides newly graduated nurse anesthetists reimbursement for costs associated with their program of study. Hershey Medical Center will provide up to $40,000 toward expenses. To receive the maximum benefit, nurse anesthetists must maintain full-time employment with Hershey Medical Center as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) for a period of 36 consecutive months.

To be eligible for this reimbursement, you must be a full-time, benefit-eligible (0.9 – 1.0 FTE) nurse anesthetist who fulfills a defined employment commitment at Hershey Medical Center. Eligible participants must have:

    • Graduated from a nurse anesthesia program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs
    • Been hired by Hershey Medical Center into their first nurse anesthetist position since graduating their program of study
    • A current Pennsylvania RN license to practice their profession
    • Certification by the National Board of Certification Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA)

Refresher programs help nurses return to work

Are you ready to return to nursing after some time away, but feel you need to brush up on your skills before treating patients again? Many registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are finding the education and support they need to reenter nursing by enrolling in a refresher program.

Offered through colleges and hospitals, nurse refresher programs are designed for RNs and LPNs who have been out of the field for at least three years. Whether your current nursing license is inactive or lapsed, your state board of nursing requires you to take a nurse refresher course to return to active status.

There tends to be a lot of anxiety among nurses reentering the field, says Scott Gross, director of Science Technology and Professional Programs at Cal State San Marcos Extended Studies, which offers a 10-week RN refresher certificate. They are returning to a different world where many of their duties, such as dispensing medications and charting, are now computerized.

For Sue Kuhns, who had been out of nursing for 14 years, the San Marcos refresher program, which combines classroom instruction with a clinical practicum, was a chance to renew her skills and reconnect with other nurses.

We went through the program in a cohort group and supported each other every step of the way, says Kuhns, who worked as a nurse for 11 years before taking time off to raise her children.

The San Marcos program costs $2,399. Gross says the college and a local hospital are working out an agreement whereby the hospital will cover half the program expenses of students who accept jobs at the hospital. Students now meet tuition costs by taking out student loans or by using tuition reimbursement offered by their current employers. Other students use signing bonuses to recoup tuition costs.

The University of Delaware and South Carolina s Beaufort Memorial Hospital are two examples of colleges that allows students to take RN refresher courses from home, with the latter offering a four-month online refresher course for both RNs and LPNs.

    Refreshers as recruitment tools

Like other medical centers across the country, Maui Memorial Medical Center uses a refresher program to help recruit and retain RNs and LPNs. The weeklong program, which was open to any nurse in the area, included training in wound care, respiratory and vascular therapies, infection control, pain management, dialysis patient care and documentation.

The medical part of nursing stays the same but the equipment, medications and therapies change every couple of years, says Marianne Vasquez, RN, BSN, MEd, CDE, the facility s clinical education coordinator.

As part of the program, the hospital set up various skill stations where nurses learned how to use new equipment. Vasquez says nurses gave the program, which cost $300 to attend, such high marks that the hospital is planning to offer the training again next year.

    Ready for a refresh?

Here are some tips for finding a nurse refresher program:

    • Check with local nursing association chapters and your state board of nursing. As a state government agency, the board of nursing regulates the state s Nurse Practice Act, determines the requirements necessary to maintain active status and approves nurse refresher courses.
    • Contact state and community colleges.
    • Call area hospitals to see if they offer or can recommend a refresher program.

    About Physical Therapy

Physical therapy helps people recover from health problems caused by disease or injury. In regular treatments, physical therapists work with patients to increase their strength, reduce or eliminate pain, regain use of an affected limb, relearn activities of daily living, and return to work or sport activities.

Physical therapists evaluate, maintain, and improve the function of a wide range of body systems, including the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. As a physical therapist, you ll help your patients achieve realistic goals by improving joint function, building muscle strength, enhancing coordination, boosting endurance, regaining motor skills, and relieving or managing pain. You ll care for patients directly, work in partnership with family members and support staff, and consult and collaborate with other health care professionals.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 204,200 physical therapists were on the job in 2012. Sixty percent of these professionals worked in hospitals or in the offices of other health care practitioners. Additional care settings include home health care agencies, nursing homes, outpatient care facilities, rehabilitation centers, adult day care programs, and schools. In the 2012 edition of its Occupational Outlook Handbook . the Bureau projects that employment for physical therapists will grow at a faster-than-average rate, and that job opportunities should be good.

Based on data updated in September 2010, PayScale Inc. reports that salaries for physical therapists with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree range from $54,000 (title: Physical Therapist) to $101,000 (title: Lead Physical Therapist.)
