Car Insurance Shopping for Teens

It almost happens overnight. One day you’re pushing them down the sidewalk in a little plastic car, the next they’re asking for the keys to the real thing. As a parent, letting your teen take the wheel is a strange feeling; it’s a weird mix of pride, protection, fear, and trust.

As the person who pays for the auto insurance, you might also be terrified about your rates going up.

Shopping for car insurance for your teen driver may seem daunting and expensive, but ask yourself a few key questions. The answers could help make the process a little easier on your blood pressure and your wallet.

1. Which kind of coverage do you want for your teen?

Every driver out there requires basic liability coverage to drive legally. How much liability do they want though? Do you want them to have other types of coverage too, like comprehensive, collision, uninsured/underinsured, or personal injury protection?

  • What kind of car does your teen drive? If it’s old, used, and seen better days, it might not be worth getting comprehensive/collision coverage, since any payout on damages could be less than your deductible. If they’re driving a newer car though, comprehensive and collision coverage is something to consider.
  • Will your teen be driving with passengers? If your teen will be driving friends and family around, consider adding Personal Injury Protection (PIP) or Medical Payments coverage to their policy. These could help pay for injuries to passengers or pedestrians caused by an accident with your teen’s car.

2. Which extras or options do you want for your teen?

Auto insurers offer all kinds of beneficial options and extras that you can add to a policy if you’re so inclined. For young drivers who are inexperienced in emergency situations, or who may get themselves into a fender bender or two, options like these can be invaluable:

  • Towing and roadside assistance
  • Small claims forgiveness
  • Incident forgiveness
  • Accident forgiveness
  • Car rental reimbursement

3. Which discounts can save you money?

Adding a new teen driver to your policy may raise your rates since they can pose an added risk. On the bright side, there are car insurance discounts you may qualify for when you add your teen to your policy, and other’s your teen may can qualify for, like:

  • Good student – your teen’s good grades can save you money.
  • Distant student – if your teen driver goes to school 100 miles or more from home, this discount can help you save.
  • Multi-car – adding your teen driver’s car to your policy can earn you this discount.
  • Driver training – gain experience behind the wheel with a state-approved driving course and your teen can qualify for another discount.

After you talk to your teen and your family, speak with a Farmers agent about your car insurance needs. An agent can provide you with more information, help find discounts, and give you a quote for coverage you want.

What do you need to know about car insurance?

Good cheap car insurance for young drivers

What is insurance?

It’s a contract between you and an insurance company: you pay them a set amount. In return, the company promises to pay for possible future damage, injury, or loss (which isn’t excluded in your policy). In other words, because you know that accidents do happen, you pay a small amount known as your Premium to cover them, instead of paying for the whole thing after the fact.

Good cheap car insurance for young drivers

Calculating premium

Your insurance cover is calculated based on a number of different things. For example age, gender, driving experience, and the kind of car you drive all play a part. As with all insurance policies, some customers pay more for their insurance than others based on these different things. The cost is basically made up of two parts, your Premium (the price you pay each year) and your Excess (the one-off amount you need to pay to make a claim).

Good cheap car insurance for young drivers

What are excesses?

An excess is a one-off amount you have to pay each time you make a claim, before your insurance looks after your claim. For example, a $500 excess means something like a door ding that will cost $350 to repair at the panelbeaters is at your cost, but anything above $500 is covered by AMI. Your excess remains the same, regardless of the value of the vehicle you’re in an accident with.

Good cheap car insurance for young drivers

Agreed value

Agreed Value is a benefit offered by AMI on your Comprehensive car insurance policy. It means that if your car is written off or stolen, we pay out the amount that was agreed at the time of taking out the policy (minus any excess). We take advice from a company that specialises in car pricing information to establish the value.

What’s a policy?

This is your coverage from AMI. It’s the specific agreement we come to, including how much you’ll pay, what is covered, and how much you’ll be paid in the event of an accident or incident.

Good cheap car insurance for young drivers

What’s a claim?

A claim is something you submit to your insurance company after an accident or incident. It’s your way of asking them to help you handle the situation and pay out the money promised to pay in the event of something bad happening. You can read more about making a claim here.

Types of car insurance

Comprehensive

Comprehensive insurance is our most advanced cover. It covers damage to your vehicle in the event of many kinds of unexpected situations, including (but not limited to!) accidental damage, theft, and fire.

Third Party Fire Theft

Third Party Fire and Theft cover can be summed up as one that protects your car against fire damage and theft, as well as covering you in case you damage someone else’s car or property. There is no cover for damage to your car in an accident where you’re at fault.

Third party only

Third Party Only generally covers your liability if you cause damage to someone else’s car or property. Your car is not covered. We do have a bonus cover called ‘innocent party protection’ if an uninsured driver damages your car.

Of course there are some things your insurance won’t cover. These are in your policy documents.

Frequently asked questions

After a non-injury crash you should swap names and addresses with other motorists involved. You’ll find handy crash notes in the AMI app, but the kinds of things you need to note down are:

  • When it happened: the date, time, location, weather conditions, traffic conditions road markings/signs/signals. A quick sketch of the accident scene can often help here.
  • The cars involved: the make, model, registration number, colour, condition, estimated speed, direction, use of lights/indicators number of passengers.
  • Who was involved: their contact details, description/distinguishing features of driver(s), contact details of passengers, pedestrians/other witnesses, details of any police officers involved
  • What was damaged: a description of the damage to vehicles/property and any injuries to people involved.

If possible it’s always useful to take photos of the scene, damage to your car and the other motorists’ cars.

If the crash involved another person’s property, such as a fence, you should report it to the owner of the property within 48 hours of the crash. If the owner cannot be located, you’ll need to report it to the police within 60 hours of the crash.

All crashes resulting in injury (such as broken bones or a night in hospital) should be reported to local police as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours from the time of the crash.

Depending on what the modifications are, we may still be able to cover you. If you’re unsure about something, it’s best to tell us. Give us a call on 0800 100 200.

You won’t be covered is anyone else under 25 drives your car, unless you’re legally married to them or you have added them as a named driver to your policy. Call us on 0800 100 200 to add other drivers to your policy.

There are a few ways you can try to reduce the costs. If you have a Comprehensive policy you could choose to exclude benefits, such as Rental Cover or Excess-Free Glass Cover, in exchange for a lower premium.

Key points

  • Young drivers pay more because of inexperience, reputation and risk
  • Driving without insurance is illegal and you risk having your licence revoked
  • Follow our tips for help in getting the right cover and keeping the price affordable

As a young driver, getting car insurance at the right price and with the right level of cover can be frustrating.

Not all insurers will quote for you, and when they do the prices they offer can be really high.

But it’s vital to arrange the right policy – in 2012, DVLA figures revealed that 10,797 drivers with fewer than two years’ experience lost their licences and more than half of those cases were because they were driving without insurance.

With this in mind, we’ve put together some information to try to help you find a better deal.

“There are ways to try to reduce the cost as you build up a safe driver record and no-claims discount,” said Gocompare.com’s Lee Griffin.

Why young drivers pay more for car insurance

There are three main reasons why young drivers have to pay a lot for their car insurance – inexperience, reputation and risk.

Inexperience

Driving experience is a crucial factor – the more time you spend on the road the better your driving is likely to be.

Drivers with more experience have a proven track record so long as they stay conviction and claim free and, as a result, they get a discount on the price of their car insurance (called a no claims bonus).

Reputation

Young drivers have a reputation for causing more accidents than any other age group and statistics from the Association of British Insurers prove that this is true.

Need more information?

The data reveals that the UK’s 18-year-olds alone cause 50 collisions a day – three times more than drivers in their 50s.

Indeed, male drivers under the age of 21 are 10 times more likely to be involved in a motoring accident than drivers over the age of 30. [1]

This means insurance companies pay out more in claims for young drivers and so charge more for insurance cover.

Car insurance premiums are based on risk (how likely it is that an insurer will have to pay out on a claim).

Insurers will look at your quote details (eg your claims history, the cost or type of the car you drive, where you live, your driving experience) and then decide what to charge.

Young drivers have more accidents and experience more car security issues, such as theft and vandalism, as crime rates are higher amongst young people.

They are, therefore, seen as a greater risk, and this is reflected in the high price of premiums.

How young drivers can reduce their car insurance premiums

While higher prices are the norm for younger drivers, there are some things you can do to lower your insurance costs. Read our top tips for cutting the cost of car insurance, but young drivers may want to focus on the following:

Did you know.

  • Adding an experienced driver to your policy could reduce your premium.
  • . but if you’re not honest about who the main driver is you’re committing a fraud known as fronting

Choose a small car

Get a car with a small engine – for example a 1.1 litre rather than a 1.6 litre – which is in a low car insurance group.

You’ll also pay less road tax if your car has a small engine capacity.

Avoid modifications

Modifications (upgrades to styling, audio or performance) may look good, but for the younger driver they mean a big increase in the price of car insurance.

Alloy wheels, body kits and performance upgrades make vehicles more attractive to car thieves. Modified cars also tend to be more expensive to fix than ordinary cars.

Named drivers

Adding another driver with a clean licence and several years’ claim-free driving to your policy could reduce your premium.

Just make sure you get consent from the person(s) who you’d like to add so that they know to declare that they have access to another car when getting their own insurance.

Also, if you’re the main driver make sure you’re noted as such on the policy.

If you say the other person is the main driver because they have a better driving history you’re committing a fraud known as fronting and you could invalidate your insurance.

Limit your mileage

If you only drive at set times of the year (perhaps during term time) then let your insurance company know.

To lower the risk of having an accident, avoid driving in rush hour and limit your annual mileage.

Consider a telematics policy

A telematics car insurance policy works by using a black box or a mobile phone app to monitor your driving and then using the data gathered as the basis for setting your insurance premium.

Such policies are available for drivers of all ages, but are thought to be especially beneficial for safe, young drivers who are struggling to find competitive quotes.

The feedback you receive has also been seen as a valuable form of education to help improve your driving.

Agree a curfew

Some insurance companies may reduce your premium if you agree to limit your driving to certain hours of the day.

Improve security

Consider improving your vehicle’s security. Fit an alarm or immobiliser and – if you have alloy wheels – invest in locking wheel nuts.

Park with care

If you can, park your car in a safe spot overnight. Parking off the road can lower the chance of your car being vandalised or stolen. Read more in our article on overnight parking and car insurance.

Increase your voluntary excess

Choosing a higher voluntary excess when you take out your policy will reduce the price of your insurance.

Remember, though, if you make a claim you may have to pay that excess before the garage will give you your car back.

Get a Pass Plus certificate

Pass Plus is a training scheme for new drivers. Bear in mind that you’ll need to pay for the course and you may not recoup the costs, but your driving should improve.

Read our article on advanced driving courses for more information on Pass Plus and other courses that may prove beneficial.

Other ways to cut costs

The easiest way to reduce your car insurance costs is to improve your reputation and driving record by staying conviction free, avoiding speeding and building up a no-claims discount. Other things you can do are:

Pay annually

Pay for your insurance when you take out the policy rather than by monthly instalments in order to avoid interest charges.

Consider your cover

If you have a car that’s not worth much, consider third party fire and theft rather than comprehensive cover (the car may only be worth a bit more than the excess on your policy).

Pay close attention to the options, though – third party products generally offer much lower levels of cover and are not necessarily cheaper.

Our top tip for cheaper insurance

  • You won’t be surprised to hear this. Shop around and review prices using a comparison site such as Gocompare.com!

Only pay for what you need

Make sure you’re not paying for policy benefits you don’t really require. For example, legal assistance or courtesy car cover may not be essential to you.

Shop around

There will be a vast difference between the lowest and highest quotes from different insurers.

Choose the cover you need and compare lots of premiums using an established comparison site such as Gocompare.com.

Some insurers will be more competitive than others for different drivers, vehicles and regions so there’s no such thing as a ‘best buy’ car insurance policy for every driver.

Florida Auto Insurance – Get a Free Quote Online

Cheap car insurance in florida for young drivers

Acceptance knows what makes a great Florida auto insurance policy: outstanding value for the money and first-rate customer service. We offer value to our customers with a diverse selection of auto insurance products, so you can get the policy that’s right for your needs, including these fundamental types of coverage:

    • Florida requires drivers to carry at least $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 of property damage liability coverage.

    Basic Liability Coverage

Drivers in this state are legally required to carry Florida auto insurance with at least the basic property damage liability coverage. This type of insurance covers the other driver’s property in the event of a collision for which you are at fault. Most serious collisions are far more expensive than that though, so it’s a good idea to consider additional coverage. However, Florida does not require bodily injury liability coverage. This means that if you are at fault in an accident and the other driver incurs accident-related medical expenses, your insurance would not cover any of it. Bodily injury liability insurance is highly recommended in Florida so you will be covered in case of an at-fault accident.

    Personal Injury Protection

In Florida, all drivers are legally required to purchase personal injury protection, or PIP. This covers the majority of medical expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of who is at fault in an accident. This coverage also covers, in part, lost wages, all replacement services such as child car, housekeeping or lawn work. It also provides a death benefit.

    Comprehensive and Collision Coverage

Adding comprehensive and collision protection to your policy is a smart move. A comprehensive and collision policy will cover your property repair and replacement costs following an accident – not just the other driver’s – and you can even add rental car coverage. Comprehensive coverage applies to things like fire, theft, vandalism and other types of damage, as well. If you’re worried about the monthly payments, Acceptance has you covered. You can always choose a higher deductible to lower your policy premiums.

    Uninsured Motorist Coverage

If you want to know that you’re covered in the event of an accident, regardless of the other driver’s insurance status, you will need to add uninsured motorist coverage to your Florida auto insurance policy. This type of coverage will protect you from the high costs of medical bills and repairs resulting from collisions with drivers who were not carrying insurance, or who had inadequate coverage for the scope of the damage. Acceptance Insurance offers a range of uninsured motorist coverage to suit your needs.

Cheap classic car insurance, the run down..

Classic car insurance under 21, 25, any tips…

Classic Car Insurance in the UK could not be easier!

Vintage and classic car owners are often devoted to maintaining their cars because they consider them a hobby, passion and a great treasure. That’s why they need specialised classic car insurance policies that can protect the cars against any damage as well as the increased risk of theft. But since the insurance market is filled with a lot of insurance companies, there’s need for one to carry out classic car insurance comparison to find favourable policy options that can cover the classic car while making significant savings.

    What Is A Classic Car?

For insurance purposes, a classic car can be defined as a car that’s 15 years or older. There’s no fixed age group into which a classic car can fit into; the definition is entirely at the discretion of the insurer. That is why it is good to compare among the range of classic car insurance providers and prices before subscribing to one. Classic car policies prices are very competitive as many insurers believe that such vehicles are well maintained by caring drivers and keep the lowest mileage as possible.

How Are Classic Car Insurance Covers Valued?

Classic car insurers offer either standard cover for cars at their current market value ( which can be less than their true value) or specialised classic car policies covering cars for their true value as classic( often referred to as agreed value cover). Car owners looking for agreed value cover can always speak to insurers to find out whether they can add it to their policy. Choosing to add an agreed value cover to a policy might increase premiums and cause the car owner to incur additional charges but it can offer cover that’s specifically tailored to the classic car. Other additional cover options offered by insurers in the UK market include breakdown cover, legal protection, EU cover, Laid up cover (when the vehicle is on the road) and limited mileage discounts. It is important for classic car owners to look at the fine print of the cover value of any of policies before buying any of them, if they have any doubts.

How Is Classic Car Security Ensured?

Desirable classic and vintage cars can be attractive to thieves since most of them do not have sophisticated security systems. That’s why some insurers will insist that classic vehicles under insurance be garaged overnight or be fitted with enhanced security systems. Fixing an alarm system or a tracker on a classic car can not only protect the car against any risk of theft but it also helps significantly cut down the cost of the cover. Upon making any modification to the car, the owner should inform the insurer of the changes made to the factory- standard specifications, without which the cover will be invalidated.

Is Joining Classic Clubs Important When Finding An Insurance Cover For A Classic Car?

Members of a classic car club often receive discounts from some insurers when arranging cover for the vehicle. Some clubs can also provide for a convenient way of finding specialist insurers for vintage vehicles. But the most important thing for any classic car owner is to compare prices and product features against the other available options in the market so as to get the right policy at the lowest cost possible.

There are additional benefits to joining a classic car social group, outings, drive bys during summer periods and just the general fun you would obtain from driving your classic car, besides all that, you can meet great people who share the same interests as you.

Looking for The Cheapest Car Insurance

Liability car insurance is required by law, but there are other reasons to carry a policy. Most lenders require full coverage insurance if you are buying a car. Plus, it protects you in the event of an accident even if you are not at fault. However, car insurance often is expensive and can take a chunk out of the budget, especially if you have more than one driver or multiple cars.

    Time-consuming and Challenging

Looking for the cheapest car insurance can be a challenge for the busy person. It requires them to input their information over and over on various company websites or call insurance providers to get quotes. In the end, many people get frustrated and settle for the first reasonable quote they receive. Unfortunately, they may be missing out on a good deal because they didn’t have the time to spend on research.

With our site, you don’t have to take up your valuable time shopping for prices on insurance coverage. Just use our site to do the comparison for you. You enjoy the benefit of inputting your information one time and receiving multiple quotes that are relevant to your needs. With this method, you end up saving time and money.

    Accurate Information for Accurate Rates

The key to getting the cheapest car insurance possible is to put as much information as you know to get more accurate quotes. For instance, including your zip code allows us to search for quotes based on where you live, which can have an impact on the prices you receive. By providing as much information as possible, you can view the results in the comparison chart and know where you save the most money.

When you use our comparison site, you end up with rates that are a true comparison. The coverage is the same or similar for each of the companies, which helps you to recognize where you are truly getting the best deal. This allows you to select affordable coverage instead of limiting yourself to the least expensive policy you can find on your own. When looking for the cheapest auto insurance, you can make sure that your policy limits are what you want them to be, giving you peace of mind while staying within budget.

    Telematics Car Insurance

By Anita Shargall on Tuesday 16 May 2017

    Car insurance for young drivers

    Car insurance for young drivers

MoneySuperMarket data. Correct as of March 2017

    What is telematics car insurance?

Telematics insurance, sometimes referred to as ‘black box’ insurance, uses data about where, when and how you drive to help bring down the cost of car insurance.

A telematics box is installed inside your car, or in some cases you download an app to your mobile phone, to measure various aspects of your driving and share that data with your insurer. If you can demonstrate that you are a safe driver, your insurance premium will reduce.

It’s perhaps not surprise that telematics car insurance policies are gaining in popularity, especially for young and inexperienced drivers whose premiums can be sky high.

How telematics differs to other insurance policies

Unlike a standard car insurance policy, a telematics policy requires the installation of a black box device in your vehicle, or the downloading of an app to your mobile phone.

Car insurers always look at a number of risk factors before setting your premium. These include your age, where you live, your occupation and the make and model of the car you want to insure. What makes telematics policies different is that they also take into account your driving behaviour, particularly the length of journeys you typically undertake, the types of road you tend to use, what time you’re usually on the road, and how smoothly you drive.

Your telematics policy will initially cost pretty much the same as a normal policy, but as the insurer monitors your driving, it can start to adjust your premium. This will be done at monthly, quarterly or when the policy comes up for renewal.

You can also see the ‘scores’ you are getting as your driving is monitored, allowing you to make adjustments to improve your telematics performance.

    Car insurance for young drivers

MoneySuperMarket data. Correct as of March 2017

    Premiums tailored to you

The time of day and which roads you use, along with your driving style, have a big impact on your driving record, which in turn affects the premium you pay. For example, accidents are much more likely at night and in rush hour, and certain roads can be shown to be more dangerous.

With a telematics policy your insurer can track your time on the road and adjust your premiums to more accurately reflect the risk of a claim. For some drivers a telematics premium can be as much as £200 cheaper than a standard policy*

Who is black box insurance for?

The cost of car insurance can be a considerable strain on a motorist’s budget.

While the average car insurance premium is around £500**, inexperienced and young drivers can pay a particularly high price for car insurance. The statistics show that they are more likely to be involved in an accident and therefore more likely to make a claim, so premiums for young or inexperienced motorists can soar into the thousands of pounds, often making it unaffordable to run a car.

Choosing a telematics car insurance policy is one way to reduce your premium if you are in a high risk group, such as:

Cut the cost of cover for young drivers

Telematics insurance companies reckon they can cut the average car insurance premium by about 25% for safe drivers.

But some motorists can benefit from much bigger savings. Young drivers stand to gain from a telematics car insurance policy, as do motorists with driving convictions, who can often pay sky-high premiums. Telematics car insurance can also work to your advantage if you are a careful driver who rarely gets behind the wheel.

    Car insurance for young drivers

MoneySuperMarket data. Correct as of March 2017

    Charges and restrictions

If you are a young or inexperienced driver and think a telematics premium could save you money, you should also consider the potential disadvantages. Some telematics insurance policies impose restrictions on when and where you can use your car, for example ‘banning’ night-time driving.

Privacy is another consideration. You should always read carefully the firm’s commitment to the use of personal data.

Check also if the telematics insurance company charges for the black box and its installation – and what happens if this is damaged or if you choose to cancel the policy.

You should also ask about your ability to switch to a different insurer when it comes to renewal, and whether you’ll be able to take your telematics track record with you to a different insurance provider.

    Choosing a telematics policy

Some experts believe telematics insurance will soon become the norm – interest is certainly high among young drivers in particular.

    Compare telematics insurance premiums

Not surprisingly, more insurers are offering telematics car insurance policies, and you can compare premiums using MoneySuperMarket’s free independent comparison site to make sure you get the best deal.

Telematics car insurance providers all use similar technology, but the policies work slightly differently.

Some give you and annual mileage allowance (say, 5,000 miles) and then award bonus miles to careful drivers. Miles could also be deducted from the allowance for a number of risky activities including driving at rush hour or at night.

The data is then used to decide renewal premiums, with discounts for the safest motorists. Alternatively, you can pay for cover by the mile – and the price varies according to the time of the day or night that you take the car on the road.

    Installing the Black Box

If you take out a telematics insurance policy, the insurer will either fit a black box to your car itself or send it to you through the post with instructions on how to install it. The black box is no bigger than a smartphone and is often attached to your dashboard.

Alternatively, you will be asked to download an app to your mobile device – and you’ll only be insured if you take your device with you when you drive (remembering never to use it to make calls or send texts or perform any other functions while you’re driving!).

In addition to monitoring where and when you drive, the black box also records how you handle the car – acceleration, braking, cornering and so on. This means that the telematics insurance provider will know whether you drive in rush hour, at high speed and whether you brake harshly and frequently.

    If you have an accident

Fans of the black box argue that it encourages safer driving. The technology can also help to track down your vehicle if it is stolen and assist in managing a claim after an accident (it can often serve as an independent, objective witness to the events leading up to the crash).

    Car Insurance for Young Drivers

Ups And Downs Of Being Young!

If there’s a downside to being young, it’s that car insurance can be pretty expensive compared with older drivers.

Getting your first licence is like a rite of passage, and yet you’re often penalised just for being the age you are! Is it fair? Probably not if you’re under 25, but the reality is younger drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents than others, nothing more.

Compare themarket .com.au recognises how tough it can be starting out with insurance, that’s why we’ve made it easier for you to compare quotes right here and see if you can strike a better deal.

    Leveling The Playing Field

Okay, so you’re young and it’s likely that you’ll need to shell out more on your insurance than those older than you. It’s not all doom and gloom, though! There are certain things you can do to give yourself the best chance at reducing your premium, both in the short and long term.

Perhaps the biggest factor that will influence your premium is the type of car you drive. Sports, luxury and highly modified vehicles will almost certainly attract higher premiums.

Paying by the month can curve the cost of insurance by spreading out the payments across the year in installments. Above all, developing a safe driving record is a sure-fire way of progressively lowering your insurance premiums long term.

    Don’t Be Fooled…

While you can get cheaper insurance options like third party fire theft, these policies don’t cover your own car in the event of an accident. You could wind up losing the most valuable thing you own, or at the very least, be left with huge repair bills.

Comprehensive car insurance is the most popular insurance taken out in Australia, and offers the highest degree of protection on the road. See if compare themarket .com.au can help you find the right cover for your situation.

Whether it’s time to renew or you’re simply looking for a better deal on your existing cover, comparing car insurance rates online helps you save time and money.

What are the cheapest cars for young drivers?

Kevin Pratt. Jun 03 2013 at 1:59 pm

It’s never been so difficult to be a young or newly-qualified driver. There’s rocketing fuel prices, tax, hefty running costs and, of course, steep car insurance premiums.

With this in mind, it’s absolutely imperative to do your research before you buy a car. Fuel economy, road tax grouping and the car’s insurance group are vital considerations that will influence your decision.

Together with DriversEdgeUK. we’ve looked at the total monthly and annual running costs of 10 of the cheapest cars for young drivers. We’ve found that the Seat Mii is the cheapest new car when it comes to monthly expenditure, with the average 18-year-old motorist facing a monthly bill of £346.63.

This covers the monthly purchase repayment, car insurance, fuel and road tax. The Mii comes highly recommended, having beaten off tough competition to win the 2012 MoneySupermarket Car of the Year title.

But what if you prefer two wheels rather than four? You could be onto a better deal financially, as the monthly cost of owning a motorbike is significantly less than for a car for young drivers. We found that a Honda CBR would cost the average 18-year-old driver just £224.10 per month.

Diesel car drivers ‘betrayed’ as EU cracks down on Britain over air pollution

As Britain is sued by the European Commission for breaching pollution limits, drivers of diesel motor vehicles are warned that they face higher costs

    Comments

More than 10 million motorists who were betrayed and misled into buying diesel cars have been warned that they face higher costs as the European Union puts pressure on Britain to cut air pollution levels.

It comes as Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, announced plans to charge diesel drivers an extra £10 to drive in the capital a measure that could be copied by as many as 18 other cities.

For more than a decade, motorists buying diesel cars have enjoyed tax breaks because the cars produce lower levels of carbon dioxide and are more fuel efficient.

Now, Britain is being sued by the European Commission for breaching air pollution limits, because emissions from diesel vehicles are contributing to tens of thousands of premature deaths each year.

Senior Conservatives are understood to be lobbying the Government to increase road taxes on diesel vehicles to bring them into line with petrol, although ministers have ruled out such a move in this parliament.

    Young drivers’ car insurance

Compare cheap young drivers’ car insurance quotes from multiple insurance brands

Drivers with more experience have a proven track record so long as they stay conviction and claim free and, as a result, they get a discount on the price of their car insurance (called a no claims bonus ).

Read our top tips for cutting the cost of car insurance. but young drivers may want to focus on the following:

    Did you know.

    Choose a small car

Get a car with a small engine – for example a 1.1 litre rather than a 1.6 litre – which is in a low car insurance group .

The easiest way to reduce your car insurance costs is to improve your reputation and driving record by staying conviction free, avoiding speeding and building up a no-claims discount

Read more in our article on overnight parking and car insurance .

Some insurers will be more competitive than others for different drivers, vehicles and regions so there’s no such thing as a ‘best buy’ car insurance policy for every driver.

    Online

Cheapest Auto Insurance for Young Drivers

To find cheaper insurance premiums, young drivers can compare rates from a variety of companies online. This allows a youthful driver to locate the cheapest quotes much quicker than the old method of contacting each insurer directly for a quote.

Find cheap insurance rates for young drivers:

There are companies out there that offer affordable premiums to teenagers, even if members of this group are considered to be a higher risk due to a lack of driving experience; the key is just to locate them. The cheapest insurer is not something someone else can tell a driver because each motorist has a unique combination of risk factors. Teenagers who drive will have to compare quotes from multiple companies at the same time to see the big picture and to easily find those insurers offering affordable coverage.

Why can the cheapest insurer differ for each young driver?

Two teenage drivers may be offered cheap rates by a different carrier because factors such as the following have an impact on price:

    • location
    • driving record
    • gender
    • type of vehicle
    • coverage

It s common to hear a young driver suggest a certain carrier who offered them reasonable prices only to find out that it wasn t the same case for you. This can be for many reasons; maybe they both have different cars or maybe one may have less than 3 years driving which is sort of a breaking point for getting the good driver discount.

Drivers with less than 3 years driving:

New drivers who have not had their license for at least three years may not qualify for the 20 percent good driver savings; however, some companies out there will honor the discount at age 19 because they may use age 16 to calculate driving experience automatically. To ensure cheap insurance:

    • Take advantage of premium reductions for:
      • continuous insurance coverage within the last 30 days
      • short commute to work or school
      • good grades in school (may need proof)
    • Consider higher deductibles when adding physical coverage to a vehicle
    • Avoid unnecessary coverage such as collision if the vehicle’s value is insignificant
    • Take a look at this video on how to find the cheapest auto insurance online
    • Consider having the monthly payments automatically withdrawn from your account to reduce billing fees
    • Avoid billing fees entirely by paying premium up-front (3 months, 6 months or one year at a time)

Completion of a safe or defensive driving course may also entitle younger motorist to a discount. Aside from the savings of premiums, this can be very valuable because such classes teach youths how to operate their vehicles safely which will help them stay safe behind the wheel.

For more information, see our resource page about auto insurance for teenagers with more articles and frequently asked questions or view this article about cheap car insurance for young drivers for more details.

Questions about Car Insurance for Young Drivers

Teenage drivers are notorious for being a bit reckless behind the wheel, and, unfortunately, this makes them more likely to be involved in a traffic accident. Teens who borrow their parents’ cars will only be covered for an accident if the.

It can be scary enough thinking about a child out on the road in their own car with so many dangers around. Combine road hazards with statistics showing young drivers’ high likelihood of being in a traffic accident, and parents might be tempted to.

Some grandparents give up driving right around the time their grandchildren start. And not wanting to let a perfectly good car to go to waste, they might want to pass their car on to those grandchildren who are just learning to drive. The only catch is that giving someone a car isn’t.

News on Young Driver Coverage Issues

July 31, 2014 – Results were so-so for two small electric car models that underwent their first-ever front-corner crash tests, according to a recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) report. The plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt got an “acceptable” rating, and the EV Nissan Leaf got a “poor” rating in.

December 19, 2013 – Esurance announced Wednesday the debut of a no-cost program that the auto insurance company said will help its policyholders who are parents to monitor their teen drivers and train those young motorists on the rules of the road. DriveSafe operates through a telematics device that Esurance sends to participants who plug that.

Cheap car insurance for young drivers

Young drivers insurance for cars is notoriously expensive – find out why and what you can do to lessen the blow and find cheap insurance for young drivers.

    Get a car insurance quote

Compare car insurance I don’t know my registration number

Our latest data shows that average premiums for young male drivers aged 17 to 18 are almost more than £2,200, while young women in the same age bracket face average bills of close to £2,000 – a 50% rise since the EU Gender Directive came into force on 21 December 2012.

And with insurers no longer able to take gender into account when calculating car insurance  premiums, the cost of young drivers insurance is only heading in one direction.

Why is young drivers car insurance so expensive?

The main reason car insurance for young drivers is so expensive is the risk the insurer takes – statistics show that young drivers are far more likely to be involved in accidents than drivers over the age of 25, with insurance premiums calculated to reflect the stats.

AA research shows that one in eight British drivers is aged 25 and under, with a quarter of all drivers involved in serious traffic collisions within this age group.

As well as being more likely to have an accident, young and new drivers often have to pay more for their car insurance because they haven’t had the chance to build up a no claims bonus  over time.

Cheap car insurance for young drivers can thus be quite difficult to find, but you can compare the market for new driver insurance on uSwitch:

How to find the best cheap car insurance for young drivers

There are a number of things you can do if you’re struggling with the high cost of car insurance for young drivers:

Find the cheapest cars to insure

Many things can impact the cost of young driver insurance and one of the first places to look at is the car itself.

Insurers place cars into individual insurance groups from 1 to 50.  Typically, if the car is in group 1 it will be amongst the cheapest to insure and 50 will be the most expensive. Cars are rated on the following factors:

    • How quickly the car accelerates and its top speed
    • The value of the car as new
    • The security features the car has
    • How much it will cost and how long it will take to fix if it is broken
    • How much the individual parts cost

You can learn more about the type of cars which attract the cheapest insurance premiums by reading our guide to the cheapest cars to insure .

    Get an extra driving qualification

Some insurers offer discounts to young drivers who take part in the Pass Plus scheme. This is a training course that gives additional coaching to new drivers.

The logic is that the better and more confident driver you are, the less likely you are to have an accident and make a claim.

The course only takes around 6 hours to complete and could drastically cut the cost of young drivers insurance.

    Increase your excess

Choosing to pay a higher excess the amount you have to pay up front if you make a claim – could significantly lower the cost of young driver insurance.

However think realistically about whether you could afford to pay that lump sum if you end up needing to make a claim.

Don t pay for what you don t need

With a number of different types of car insurance policy out there, it pays to get an idea of what level you require. Don’t pay extra for what you don’t need.

The minimal level of cover to legally drive in the UK is third party car insurance. This will cover costs in repairs or injuries to any third party affected by an accident you cause. Any costs to your own car however will not be covered.

With a third party car insurance policy you will also not be compensated if your car is stolen or damaged. If you live in an area where theft and vandalism is common then you might want to consider getting third party, fire and theft cover.

As with regular third party insurance however, third party fire and theft won’t cover any injury costs or repair costs to your vehicle in the event of an accident.  To get this level of cover, opt for a fully comprehensive insurance policy.

Take some time to consider what level of cover you need. Also, make sure you compare the whole market as you may be surprised at which level of cover comes out cheapest.

Add an experienced second driver to the policy

Adding an experienced and older named driver to the policy is another effective way to bring down the cost. This way the insurer is reassured that the young person will not be the only one driving the car, which reduces the chances of an accident occurring.

However, be careful of ‘fronting’. The car must be in the name of the main driver of the vehicle, otherwise you are breaking the law and any claims you make will be turned down and your insurance invalidated.

    Don’t pay per month

It may not be possible for many young drivers to fork out the cost for car insurance in one go, but if this option is open to you, take it, as you could pay less in total by not paying in monthly instalments.

    Telematics/Black box insurance

If you don’t plan to use your car very often, telematics (or black box insurance as it s also known) could be the right move for you. Black box car insurance counts the miles you’ve driven so that you only pay for what you use.

A telematics box will be installed in your car and it works much like a pay as you go mobile phone contract as you top up in bundles of miles depending on how much you’re driving.

The technology measures everything and paints a picture of how safe a driver you are. So if you’re a safe driver and stick well within the speed limits then you could get your hands on cheap young driver insurance.

Keep in mind however that your circumstances might change and you might find that you have further miles to drive making it more expensive.

Read more about black box insurance in our guide.

    Make your car secure

Make your car more secure by adding security features such as an alarm and try to keep it out of harm’s way as much as possible. If you can park your car off the street, or even better in a garage, then you will very likely see the quotes fall in price.

    New drivers insurance

It is not just young drivers that are faced with sky high premiums, new drivers insurance is similarly expensive. Ultimately, it comes down to the providers taking a risk on your inexperience.

New drivers of any age are often cited in statistics that show them being more likely to have an accident than their more experienced counterparts.

This often means that new driver insurance is likely to have the high premiums often associated with car insurance for young drivers.

You can read our guide to cheap car insurance for new drivers  to learn more.

Why Should Drivers Compare Insurance Companies?

As a college Professor of Insurance, I have noticed that when college students take that important step into independence and start paying for their own car insurance, most of them continue buying car insurance from the same company their parents used. Many times their parents have been insured by this company since they became drivers too. It never occurs to these students (or their parents) that all insured drivers should “shop around” for affordable car insurance. Maybe they assume that every insurance company charges the same rate for the same risk, and maybe they believe that all insurance coverage is essentially the same. But neither of these assumptions is true. In fact, two different insurance companies can and often do price their insurance policies very differently for the same driver.

So how do insurance companies decide how much to charge for the insurance policies they sell? Unfortunately there is no way around it: it’s complicated! Specialized professionals known as insurance actuaries spend many years studying actuarial science to learn how to “price” insurance policies. Actuaries use mountains of statistical data to determine the prices for insurance policies. This data includes internal company information, such as the number and types of customers an insurance company currently insures, as well as external data, such as accident risk for a specific vehicle or theft risk for a particular zip code.

But you don’t have to be an insurance actuary to see that insurance rates do vary from company to company. If you don’t already “shop around” for insurance, this article will hopefully encourage you to begin the process and equip you with information that will help you make the best decisions to meet your car insurance needs.

First, think about what insurance companies are actually selling. They sell a “promise to pay” in the event of a covered loss. That means that, up-front, they are not selling anything of value other than their promise. It also means that, other than some up-front labor and overhead costs, they don’t know how much this promise is going to eventually cost them. It just depends on the amount of covered losses they end up paying, which they sometimes pay many years after they collect the premium.

So how do they decide what to charge? To put it simply, insurance companies base their price or “rates” on past losses and on how they expect those losses to change going forward. So, if two companies are trying to price insurance for the same “risk”, i.e. driver, why would they the risk a different rate?”

There are two primary reasons insurance rates vary from company to company:

    1. Different appetites for risk
    2. Different levels of service and claims payments

    Different Appetites for Risk

Yes, that’s correct, different insurance companies have different appetites for risk, much like different people have different appetites for where they invest their money. One person might choose to invest in high-risk technology stocks while another might prefer to invest low-risk municipal bonds. For insurance companies, their appetites for risk are frequently dependent on their need to accomplish two sometimes conflicting goals: marketing and diversification.

Marketing: Insurers might price products more competitively, i.e. charge less for a policy, when they want to leverage a certain marketing tool they have in place. For example, a company might have an agency force or other marketing mechanism that is geared particularly well to selling insurance to older drivers. So in order to further support their advantage in marketing, they might charge less than their competition to older drivers while they charge more to younger drivers.

Diversification: Conversely, an insurer might decide they have too much of a concentration in their book of business of a particular type of insured (e.g. maybe older drivers) so they lower their rates for younger drivers and raise rates for older drivers. By doing this they hope to attract more younger drivers and develop a book of business (a group of insureds) that is more balanced.

Below are 10 ways insurance company rates commonly differ and some examples of those differences:

    1. Age – Some companies are more competitive with younger drivers than others
    2. Credit score – While most companies today do use credit score as a rating factor for auto insurance, some are more forgiving than others of low credit scores for certain reasons like divorce or age
    3. Location – Some insurers prefer city drivers while others might want more rural drivers; also, if an insurance company has a very geographic concentration of insured drivers that exposes them to catastrophic loss, they might begin to price higher in those areas than other insurers
    4. Some reward persistence – With some insurance companies, rates go down the longer you are with the company; other insurance companies try to draw new business with rate discounts
    5. Education and military service – Some insurers offer discounts for good students and for military personnel
    6. Loss history – Nearly all insurers increase their rates for drivers with a loss history, but some have more generous good driver discounts while others are more forgiving of a poor accident history
    7. Type of car – Some insurers do not penalize significantly for driving a sports car. but some insurers will price them higher
    8. Work or pleasure – Some insurers prefer work commuters; others prefer those who drive more for pleasure
    9. Male or female drivers – If an insurance company finds they have an abundance of male drivers, they might raise rates (even more) on male drivers and lower them on female drivers to even out their mix of business
    10. Multiple policy discounts – Some insurance want to sell you their life, health and homeowners insurance along with your auto insurance, while others are only selling auto insurance

To some extent, the old adage “you get what you pay for” is true even with insurance. If the insurance is “cheap”, there is a chance that the insurance company is more stringent when it comes to paying claims and not as good at providing service. Some insurers have a tendency to pay lower claims amounts or to fight questionable claims more aggressively.

When an insurance company fights truly fraudulent claims, this is not a bad thing for honest policyholders because it keeps the cost of insurance down in the long run. But some companies have a reputation for taking longer to pay legitimate claims and generally making the claims process difficult. This might be because they are understaffed or because they simply hope that policyholders will accept lower claims payments if the process has been tedious for them.

The best way to find out whether a company has good claims service (as well as other services) is to ask others who have had a claims experience with the company. Tell coworkers, neighbors, family and friends that you are thinking about switching your car insurance and ask them to talk about their experience with their insurance company, particularly if you know they have had a claims experience.

Many states’ Departments of Insurance can tell you which companies have received the highest level of complaints and sometimes even about the nature of those complaints against the company. A link to your state’s insurance department website can be found at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners website at http://www.naic.org/state_web_map.htm .

In general, large, multi-line national companies tend to reward persistence and good driving records. They tend to be more conservative in the types of risks they take on but better at service and often more generous with claims payments. But there are exceptions, so it is best to shop around and ask around to find the best company for the best price for you!

By the way, if you have a complaint against an insurer’s or agent’s handling of a claim or any other service they provided, go to https://eapps.naic.org/cis/fileComplaintMap.do for a map that will take you directly to your state’s complaint filing department. Most states allow you to file the complaint electronically. This will help others like you when they are trying to decide which company is the most appropriate for their insurance needs.

    Senior Driver Car Insurance Guide

Ensure your parents get the best and most affordable senior driver car

insurance as they age and learn to recognize the signs that they are no longer able to safely operate a vehicle.

Many people, including seniors themselves, don’t realize that drivers over the age of 75 are among the highest group involved in daytime traffic accidents.

Accidents involving seniors over 75 cause more injuries and deaths than any other age group. How do you know if you’re a safe driver? What signs do you look for in mom or dad that may indicate a decline in driving skills? On the other end of the spectrum, can safe, mature drivers receive better rates on senior driver car insurance?

What to look for with Elderly Drivers

Sure, elderly drivers have decades of driving experience and more often than not are aware of road safety and speed, but they may also suffer from slower reaction times and skills. When it comes to driving, seniors, or children of the elderly must be aware of certain signs that driving skills are decreasing. This is not the time to be too proud to admit that age may be catching up with you. Your safety and the safety of your family as well as others on the highway are very important considerations.

Basic signs or aging factors that may affect the driving ability of individuals over 65, but especially focus on those elderly drivers over 70 years of age include:

    • Increased reaction time – studies have shown that seniors can do anything a younger person can, but that the response time performing such actions or activities slows down. The same thing goes for driving.

    • Limited mobility – flexibility also decreases as we age. Full range of motion as well as immediate reaction times is essential for road safety.

Arthritis, spine or bone injuries, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes are just a few of the medical conditions that may cause loss of full range of motion.

    • Medications – most individuals are cautioned against driving when under the influence of medication. As size, weight and condition will determine whether or not an individual is affected by medications, discuss concerns with your family care provider. A good rule of thumb is not to drive when under any type of medication.
    • Hearing and vision loss – any type of vision acuity or hearing loss may affect road safety, not only yours, but those around you. Many seniors quit driving at night, but should also remember that sensitivity to sunlight and glare effect every driver, and not just seniors.

However, changes in vision depth, peripheral vision and conditions such as astigmatism, glaucoma or cataracts may also affect the senior person’s ability to see both nearby and distant objects adequately.

When the time is right, discuss driving safety with your elderly parents. Loss of independence is often very difficult for seniors to accept, but it’s important to stress the safety not only of them, but others and their property. Whenever possible, suggest alternatives or solutions to transportation issues, such as car pools, buses, shuttles, senior service transportation or taxi services.

    Senior Driver Car Insurance Rates

Many states throughout the country, offer automobile insurance discounts to seniors who engage in senior safety driving programs. In addition, AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) members may receive discounts on automobile insurance services and products depending on geographical location.

The national average of car insurance rates is approximately $800.00. Drivers in California, New York, and Washington DC may pay over $1000 year, while individuals living in Kansas, North Dakota, and Nebraska may pay an average of $500 year. Auto insurance rates are determined by geographical location, type of car driven, age of the driver, prior accidents, and distance driven on a daily and yearly basis, so check with local senior driver car insurance providers as well as through organizations such as the AAA Website and AARP Website for more information regarding cost of auto insurance in a specific area.

Negotiating for a Better Rate Most insurance companies offer discounts of between five and 10% on insurance to individuals between the age of 50 and 55, though insurance rates often increase after the 55-year-old mark.

As an example a senior driver may take defensive driving courses to reduce insurance costs by up to another 10%. Such driving courses generally cost between $10 and $30 for an eight hour, two-day course.

A few simple tactics to negotiate a better senior driver car insurance rate include:

    • Speak to your insurance agent
    • Offer to combine home and auto insurance with the same company
    • Let the auto insurance agent know if you carpool or your daily or yearly driving distance has decrease.

A senior driver needs to be especially careful getting behind the wheel of a car. Remember, where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Don’t endanger yourself or others, but work with other family members to develop a safe mode of transportation no matter where you live.

The best cars for teen drivers

    By CarInsurance.com

While keeping your teen safe is your top priority, you also have to find a vehicle that is both affordable and reliable. Car insurance for young drivers is expensive, and unless your day job is car salesperson, finding the perfect car for a teen is often difficult.

    We are here to help.

Carinsurance.com has compiled a list of recommended used cars that should make your job a bit easier. These cars will keep your teen safe without breaking the family budget.

The vehicles below meet our requirements:

    • They cost less than $15,000.
    • They are rated as an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick.
    • They keep fuel costs low with an EPA rating of at least 20-mpg combined.
    • They score better than average when it comes to annual repair visits according to TrueDelta.com.
    • Since safety is a huge factor for teen drivers, all of our vehicles are 2012’s with electronic stability control (ESC) as standard equipment. ESC helps drivers regain control of a vehicle during a slide and can be a real lifesaver. According to Anne McCartt, senior vice president for research at the IIHS, ESC is a must. “Parents should never consider any vehicle that doesn’t have electronic stability control,” she said.

Here are the used cars that made the grade, along with their average cost according to Edmunds, and the annual policy cost (best and worst) for an 18-year old who is buying their own insurance coverage:

While keeping your teen safe is your top priority, you also have to find a good first car that is both affordable and reliable. Car insurance for young drivers is expensive, and unless your day job is car salesperson, finding the perfect car for a first-time driver is often difficult.

Choosing the right car for teens: Safety first, then price

What your teen is looking for in a car and what you want them driving are often two different things.

Boring is the way to go, according to Penny Gusner, consumer analyst with Insure.com. “Parents need to look for a boring, used car with lots of safety features. You want a car that the teen isn’t going to drive beyond their skills. Sedans are popular choices for novice drivers.”

After safety, most parents are looking for affordability. Our list includes a wide variety of price points, ranging from $9,600 up to the full $15,000 limit. The recommended vehicles range from a smaller car, like the Honda Civic, all the way up to the Hyundai Tuscan SUV.

McCartt likes the bigger cars for teen drivers. “When thinking about safety, parents may focus on features like the number of airbags, but a key part of crash protection is a vehicle’s size and weight. Bigger, heavier vehicles are more protective in crashes than smaller, lighter ones,” explains McCartt.

Sports cars are an obvious no-no. Teen drivers don’t need the horsepower. “When buying a used vehicle for a teen, there are a few things you shouldn’t compromise on,” says McCartt. “Avoid high-horsepower vehicles that can encourage risky driving.”

Now it’s time to look at one of the biggest cost factors, insuring your teen.

Teen drivers: Car insurance rates for four scenarios

While you certainly love your teen, there is a good chance your insurer will not. Car insurance for young drivers, whether you add them to your policy or they get their own, is always expensive. Teens bring stacks of risk to the table and insurance companies will charge you for that risk.

See our guides to average rates by state for every age:

According to the IIHS, a total of 2,823 teens died in car crashes in 2012. While this is a 68 percent drop from 1975 (thank airbags, ESC, and other safety features) it is still too many fatal accidents. Males are especially dangerous, accounting for two out of every three teen drivers killed.

These depressing stats are a major reason for your impending premium increase. “Parents will normally see their car insurance bill double when adding a teen,” says Gusner. “A premium increase of anywhere from 100 to 200 percent is common.”

Let’s look at the numbers and see just what a teen will do to your rates.

Meet the Smith family. Abby (the mom) is 40, has a spotless driving record and is the primary driver of a 2015 Toyota RAV 4 LE. Jack (the Dad) is a bit older at 45, also has a spotless driving record and cruises around town in a 2010 Honda Accord LX.

The best full coverage quote we could find for Jack and Abby was $1,788 a year, while the most expensive premium clocked in at $3,216. The difference is a whopping $1,428, which clearly illustrates the fact that insurers rate risk differently, and shopping your coverage on a regular basis is extremely important.

Keep in mind that while this list highlights the rate differences between cars, it does not necessarily reflect what your household will pay for car insurance. Your rates could be lower or higher. The biggest factors that affect your premium are your ZIP code and your teen’s driving record.

Watch what happens when we add Abby and Jack’s 18-year old son Steve to the policy.

Assign the teen to your policy: The best rate we could find was $3,756, more than double their previous rate. The worst rate we came across was a budget-busting $6,444, a shocking 350 percent increase from the lowest quote without Steve.

Buy the teen a late-model used car: If Jack and Abby feel that Steve needs his own car and put him in a late model-vehicle, such as a financed 2012 Toyota Corolla, the lowest yearly premium jumps to $4,800, while the highest rate was almost $8,000 a year.

Buy the teen a beater car: Now let s stick Steve in a beater. Adding a 2008 Ford Taurus (liability coverage only) to the family policy drops the rate a bit, but not as much as you would hope. The cheapest quote was $4,400.

Giving the teen his own beater car and policy: Kicking Steve off the family policy, keeping him in that 2008 Ford Taurus with only liability insurance drops his premium to $2,544. But when the original $1,788 (Jack and Abby’s insurance) is added in, the annual cost to insure the family is back up to $4,332, so not a big money saver.

All of these numbers make one thing very clear, teens are expensive to insure, and frequently shopping your coverage can save you a ton of money.

Safety and car insurance tips for teen drivers

You can’t escape the price hike that adding a teen to your policy brings, but it is possible to minimize the damage. Here are a few tips from industry experts:

Be a role model. “A well-trained driver is the most important safety feature in any car,” says Doug Herbert, founder of Put On The B.R.A.K.E.S. “Practice frequently with your teen driver and be a good role model behind the wheel.”

Teen-driver course discounts. “Ask your insurer if there are discounts for a driver’s education course or if they have a teen program,” says Gusner. “Farmers’ program is called YES and State Farm has Steer Clear,” continues Gusner.

Buy umbrella coverage. “Consider an umbrella liability policy,” says Loretta Worters, with the Insurance Information Institute (III). “In our litigious society, you may want to have an extra layer of liability protection. For about $150 to $300 per year, you can buy a $1 million personal umbrella liability policy,” explains Worters.

Good student discount . Tell Junior to keep his grades up. “Your child can garner a discount if they maintain at least a B average. The discount usually runs from 5 to 15 percent,” says Gusner.

Raise deductibles . Jacking up your deductible can also be a money saver. “Going from a $250 to $500 or $1,000 deductible can shave 10 to 20 percent off of your premium,” says Worters.

Policy adjustments for college. Finally, when your teen goes to college, your rates may finally start dropping. “When your teen heads off to college, you may be eligible for lower premiums, provided the car stays behind. Many insurers will reduce rates for students attending a school at least 100 miles away from home who do not have a car on campus,” says Worters.

Insurance rates are for an 18-year-old male in ZIP code 80104 (Castle Rock, Colorado) commuting 20 miles each way to school, with no accidents or violations. Coverage includes $100,000 bodily injury liability (up to $300,000 per accident) and $50,000 in property damage liability, $10,000 in personal injury protection and comprehensive and collision coverage with $500 deductibles.

Car Tracking Devices for Teen Drivers

    1 of 6

New teen drivers have always worried parents. And for good reason.

In 2011, nearly 2,000 drivers ages 15-20 died in traffic accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Since 2002, the traffic-related deaths in that age range have declined by 48 percent, but there’s still a long way to go.

If you’re a parent who’s rattled by these statistics, there’s an expanding array of options for monitoring your teen’s driving as he or she gains experience. The approaches include car GPS tracking devices that show when a teen has strayed beyond a set boundary, an in-car camera system that activates when a teen driver has executed a risky maneuver and a smart key that can block incoming calls and texts. It can even turn down the radio.

Many experts, including those who study teenage brains, give car tracking devices with cameras or other technology a qualified thumbs up.

“I think these devices are fine, as long as the teen driver is aware that they have been installed,” says Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D. the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University and an expert in teen development. “I’m not in favor of parents spying on their adolescents.”

Technology notwithstanding, it’s crucial to have a frank parent-teen talk about driving and expectations. he says.

Steinberg’s research shows that parental fears about teen driving have a credible basis. A teen with excellent technical driving skills does not necessarily have mature judgment behind the wheel, he says.

“The brain systems that are important for things like impulse control, thinking ahead and evaluating risks are still developing when people are 16, 17, even 18 years old,” Steinberg says.

Until teen drivers have gained that maturity behind the wheel, here is a sampling of the tracking and monitoring technologies available from insurance companies, cell phone providers, carmakers and safety organizations.

    Linking the Family

OnStar’s Family Link option, launched in April 2012, now has more than 23,000 of OnStar subscribers enrolled, says Cheryl McCarron, a company spokesperson. Parents can log on to Family Link online to check their teen’s progress during a trip. Its GPS-based Location Alert tells the teen’s whereabouts. Parents can set the parameters for how often they want updates by e-mail or text.

It’s well used, says McCarron. “On average, an enrollee uses the Vehicle Locate service 50 times a month to locate their vehicle,” she says. The alert service sends out 800,000 texts and e-mails a month.

The cost is $3.99 a month added to the OnStar subscription packages ($199-$299 yearly). More information is available from OnStar .

    Locating Your Teens

Many cell phone carriers, including Sprint offer phone-based locator services that use the device’s GPS capabilities. Verizon’s product is called Family Locator. If you’re a Verizon customer, you can set up ”arrival” and ”departure ” alerts so you’re notified when a teen leaves one point (such as school) and again when he returns home. The service also provides an estimate of how fast a driver is traveling. It’s an extra $9.99 a month from Verizon .

Newer is Diagnostics by Delphi. also offered by Verizon. In addition to offering vehicle diagnostic services through the car’s onboard diagnostic port, Diagnostics by Delphi uses GPS capabilities to let you set up geo-fences, which are virtual fences applied to real-world geography. Parents get e-mail alerts when the car goes beyond those limits, says Albert Aydin, a Verizon spokesperson. Speed alerts tell you if your teen is driving more than 75 mph. The module, $249.99, can be added to the Share Everything account for $5 monthly.

AAA offers a similar device as part of its OnBoard Teen Safe Driver program. It’s free for AAA members who have a teen driver insured by the Interinsurance Exchange of the Automobile Club.

    Putting Teens on Camera

DriveCam is a monitoring camera, placed on the windshield behind the rearview mirror. It films your teen as she drives, recording risky events and flashing lights that change colors when the risky maneuvers occur. Parents and teens then review the video together and the teen gets feedback, says Bill Carpenter, a spokesperson for DriveCam.

Researchers at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and others tested the system in an independent study. They assigned 90 pairs of parents and teens to two groups. One group only got immediate feedback on their driving via the lights warning them of risky maneuvers. The other group watched the videos with their parents and got their feedback.

“The group getting both light feedback and feedback from parents changed their behavior immediately,” says C. Raymond Bingham, Ph.D. a research professor at UMTRI who helped lead the study. Teens who just got feedback from the system did not. The combination seems to be the key, he says.

Policy holders at American Family Insurance can get DriveCam at no charge. Others can get it for $49 a month.

    Setting Speeds, Blocking Tunes

Ford’s MyKey program. launched in 2010 on the Ford Focus, has been expanded and updated, says Kelli Felker, a Ford Motor Company spokesperson. It’s now standard on all models except Fiesta and Transit Connect. When the new models of those two are introduced, they, too, will have the MyKey feature, she says.

Parents can program the MyKey so it mutes the radio until the seatbelt is buckled and can also limit radio volume while teens are driving. MyKey’s Do Not Disturb feature blocks incoming phone calls or texts from a Bluetooth-paired cell phone. Calls are diverted to voicemail. Text messages are saved on the phone. Drivers can still place voice-activated outgoing calls, including calls for emergency services. Speed can be limited to under 80 mph.

Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system offers notification benefits to parents. Available on select 2012 and 2013 Hyundai models, this system allows parents to set speed alerts that notify them if their teen’s car is driven over a certain speed or if the vehicle crosses set geo-fence boundaries. This feature will be rolled out across the entire Hyundai fleet over the next couple of years. Blue Link also allows parents to monitor curfews. If their teen’s car is driven after 10 p.m. on a particular night, for example, Blue Link can notify parents via text message, e-mail or phone.

The Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 telematics system is now standard on most 2013 models. It, too, allows geo-fences, has speed alerts and a curfew minder.

Mbrace2 also has Internet-enabled features such as Facebook. However, when the car is in motion, some functions on apps are automatically restricted or limited, such as the ability to view certain things on the screen or to type in entries.

    Expert Views

Safety experts agree with Steinberg that the first thing parents and teens need is a frank talk about driving. After that, monitors can be effective as a supplement.

“The research shows that the monitors can be effective in changing how teens behave behind the wheel and reducing dangerous driving,” says Russ Rader, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, he also has found that some parents as well as teens balk at the use of in-car monitoring, considering it an invasion of privacy.

The technologies are a ”potentially promising extension of parents’ presence in the car,” says Justin McNaull, director of the American Automobile Association’s state relations department. He led development of Keys2Drive. AAA’s state-specific Web sites for families of teen drivers. However, he says, there has been limited scientific research on how best to use them.

    Risks That Bear Watching

Whether you decide to monitor or not, research suggests some driving situations are riskier than others. A new teen driver carrying teen passengers is especially risky, Steinberg says. He compares it to having a drink or two before you drive.

“I don’t know a parent who would smell alcohol on her son’s breath and hand him the car keys,” Steinberg says. Yet many think nothing about letting teens who are new to driving carry passengers, he says.

Putting limits on letting teens drive with passengers (particularly with other teens) is an important element in most states’ graduated driver licensing laws .

In a new study, Steinberg has found that teens’ risky behavior decisions may be influenced by friends. The feedback they get from friends for “I-dare-you” behavior may tune the brain’s reward system to be even more sensitive to the reward value of such behavior, he says. As a result, Steinberg says, teens may focus more on the short-term benefit they feel from the risky behavior more than the long-term benefit of staying safe.

Car Tracking Technology Can’t Replace Good Parenting

While car tracking devices for teen drivers may help you, as a parent, set and enforce the rules, no technology will replace your ongoing involvement, McNaull says.

“And a concern that many of us as safety advocates have is that parents will have a technology in place, then not continue to stay otherwise engaged,” he says. That engagement, he says, should be ongoing and include such tasks as practicing driving with your teen and having check-ins on driving progression.

Young Drivers Insurance at Internet rates #used #car #search

#cheap car insurance for young drivers
    #

The fact is that insurance companies see younger drivers as a greater risk, and statistics do indeed show that not only are young drivers involved in more accidents than older drivers, but their vehicles are more likely to be vandalised or stolen too. The most risky period is within two years of passing a driving test, and it is not unusual for premiums to actually increase after a learner driver has thrown away the L plates, because this means that he or she will now be free to drive without qualified supervision, and on motorways, where even a small error can lead to catastrophic consequences. Insurance premiums can therefore be extremely heavy for those aged under 25 without a great deal of driving experience, but nevertheless there are ways of cutting these down considerably! Here are a few tips on how to cut those premiums: –

Fight off the urge to buy yourself a shiny, fast sports car! Not only will the insurance cost you a fortune but you may well struggle to find cover at all. Instead, buy a vehicle in the lowest possible insurance group with the smallest engine; you can always upgrade to a classier set of wheels when you are a little older.

  • Don t buy an expensive car at this stage, but go for something cheap and cheerful subject to it being in good mechanical condition. A few minor dents here and there may make it a cheaper buy, and if it collects one or two more it won t be such a disaster! Insure it for third party only, or third-party fire and theft if you can afford it.
  • Try not to allow any claims to be made against your insurance policy unless it is absolutely necessary. If you drive into the back of a friend s car it may be a lot cheaper in the long run to pay for the damage out of your own pocket than make a claim and watch your premiums spiral out of sight.
  • See if your insurer will give you a substantial reduction in premium if you accept a larger voluntary policy excess, ie the amount that you will pay out of your own pocket towards any claim. Sometimes offering to pay a little more than the standard £50 or £100 excess can lead to a much reduced quotation.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, risk driving without insurance, at an excessive speed, in a dangerous manner, or with any alcohol or drugs in your system! You may feel that the fine and penalty points (or ban) would be punishment enough but the increase in premium, if you were able to get insurance at all, could be eye watering.
  • If, and only if, you intend to drive your parents car occasionally you may be able to be included on their insurance policy as a named driver. You have to be very careful with this however, since if you were in fact the main driver of that vehicle you could be committing a criminal offence and the insurance company could refuse to pay out in the event of an accident.
    • Finally, use a top price comparison engine to find the lowest price. Tesco check a large number of different companies in about the same time it takes to get a single quote and the difference between the highest and lowest prices can be quite staggering.

Car insurance for young male drivers

It’s an unfortunate fact that young male drivers have more serious crashes than their female friends.

Often this can be linked to overconfidence. Although being a confident driver is a good thing, it’s important to realise that passing the driving test isn’t a badge of excellence. It’s really only the beginning of the learning you have to do by yourself.

Young male drivers statistically crashing more used to mean girls got cheaper insurance than they did, but the European Court of Justice put a stop to that a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, that didn’t necessarily make car insurance for young male drivers cheaper – it just put a stop to automatically lower premiums for being female.

But what if you’re not like the others?

Just because some young male drivers choose to drive dangerously doesn’t mean you do, so we don’t think you should be judged on a statistic. With black box insurance, you pay for your insurance based on how you actually drive.

By choosing ingenie car insurance I saved over £500 from the next cheapest quote. Getting discounts on my insurance if I drive well means I’ll save money, and this is extremely important being a student and getting ready to go to university.

    Alfie, 19
    ingenie driver

How to save money on your insurance if you’re a young male driver

    Choose the right car

Don’t aim to own your ideal car the minute you pass your test. Insurance costs reflect things like engine size, desirability and current market value so your favourite car probably won’t be cheap to insure.

Picking a car from a low insurance group is one of the best ways to keep your insurance costs down. But don’t worry, that doesn’t have to mean it’s lame – check out our top 10 cars for young drivers .

    Avoid modifications

Lots of insurers won’t cover cars that have any modifications and even those that do will usually charge you more.

Modifications are any changes to the car after it left the factory – like tinted windows, spoilers, upgraded stereos and sports exhausts.

You can find out more about how modifications affect your insurance in the Young Driver’s Guide.

    Go for black box insurance

You know how you drive but insurers don’t – yet! With a black box in your car, you can show exactly how you make decisions about speed, acceleration, braking and cornering. We don’t have curfews, so it really is all about how you drive.

If you drive well, you’ll get discounts. ingenie gives you the chance to earn up to an extra 21% off your starting price, with discounts awarded 3 times a year.

If you’re a young male driver, that makes your insurance much more affordable and means you don’t have to wait a whole year to see the benefit of driving well.

Welcome to Ohio Traffic Ticket Help
A Service of Luxenburg Levin, LLC, Attorneys At Law

Approximately 35,000,000 people across the country will receive traffic tickets this year, mostly for speeding. As many as 95% of these tickets are not contested. Traffic tickets are big business for local courts and governments throughout the United States. Some cities generate millions of dollars a year from traffic ticket fines. Some smaller rural towns can generate most of their operating budgets from the money they earn through traffic tickets.

Most people take the path of least resistance and just pay their fines, thinking it is not worth the trouble to contest their tickets. Before you just pay up, consider that your traffic ticket could cost you a lot more than just the fine you pay. Traffic convictions and guilty pleas can result in increases in your insurance premiums of up to 50% or more. The points charged against your driver s license can lead to your license being suspended for six months in Ohio. Most other states have some form of license suspension rules for repeat offenders as well. If you are not an Ohio driver, convictions or guilty pleas from Ohio traffic tickets are almost always reported back to your home state. In addition, many employers look unfavorably on employees or job candidates with poor driving records, especially if your license is suspended and you can t get to work. If you hold a commercial driver s license, your traffic ticket could cost you your entire livelihood.

The experienced attorneys at Luxenburg Levin, LLC can help you negotiate a lower fine (or in some cases no fine) and fewer or no points on your driving record. If your case must go to trial, we have the knowledge and experience necessary to give you the best possible chance to beat your traffic or speeding ticket.

8 Ways to Cut Insurance Costs for Teen Drivers

My 16-year-old son is about to get his license, and I’m afraid of what that might do to our auto-insurance rates. How can we lower insurance costs?

You’re right to be worried — your auto-insurance premiums are likely to skyrocket when your teenage son starts driving. But a few key moves can help you cut costs significantly.

    1. Raise your comprehensive and collision deductibles to at least $1,000, which lowers your premiums and prevents you from filing small claims that could jeopardize a claims-free discount. Add some more money to your emergency fund so you’ll have the cash to pay the deductible if anyone in your family does have an accident.

    2. Drop collision and comprehensive coverage entirely on older cars that are worth little more than the deductible. You may be paying more in premiums than you could ever get back from the insurer, even if the car is totaled. Look up your car’s value on Kelley Blue Book .

    3. Get a safe car. Having your child drive a safe car will help you sleep easier and keep your auto-insurance rates under control, too. Check safety ratings at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety .

    4. Encourage your kids to get good grades. Most insurers offer a big discount for young drivers who maintain at least a B average in high school or college. College kids generally need to take at least 12 credits to qualify for the discount, says Trisha Mujadin, an independent insurance agent with NRG, a Seattle insurance agency.

    5. Tell your insurer if your child goes away to college. If your child goes to school more than 100 miles away and doesn’t take a car, you can usually get a big break on your premiums but still have coverage when he or she comes home for vacation.

    6. Ask about other discounts for teenage drivers. Some insurers offer discounts for driver-safety programs, cutting costs if the kids take a special class, watch a DVD, or read a driver-safety book and take a test. Ask your insurer what your kid needs to do to qualify.

    7. Make the most of multipolicy discounts. You’ll usually get a break on your auto insurance and your homeowners insurance if you keep both policies with the same company. You may get an additional discount if you include an umbrella policy, which provides extra liability coverage beyond your auto-insurance limits and can be particularly valuable when you have a teenage driver.

    8. Shop around. Some insurers offer much better deals than others for teenage drivers, so it’s important to compare costs. The insurance company that offered the best rate for you and your spouse may have some of the highest rates when you add a teenage boy to the policy (and it’s almost always better to add the child to your policy rather than have him get his own policy). “One company we work with is really great with young drivers and another is horrible,” says Mujadin.

You can get price quotes from several insurance companies at www.insurancerates.com (a new site by InsWeb.com) or get personalized service from an independent insurance agent who works with many companies (you can find a local independent agent at www.iiaba.org ). You may not want to switch from a longtime insurer just to save a few dollars, however, because your current company may be less likely to raise your rate or drop you if your child has an accident, says Mujadin. “If you stay with the company where you’ve been, there’s some value to that — there’s more room for forgiveness.” Also keep in mind that if you’ve been getting a multipolicy discount, your homeowners-insurance rate might rise if you take your auto-insurance business elsewhere.

One thing you don’t want to do in an attempt to reduce your premiums is skimp on liability coverage. Mujadin recommends liability limits of at least $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident and $100,000 for property damage (or a policy with a “combined single limit” of $500,000, when available, which doesn’t limit the coverage to $250,000 per person involved in the accident). Young drivers are more likely to have accidents, and lowering your liability limits could leave you on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars in expenses if your child does hit another car or injure someone.

    Auto Insurance for Young Drivers

Getting affordable coverage for a young driver will likely be difficult to do, but the more insurance companies you get quotes from, the more likely you are to find the best deal. Teenagers and other younger motorists usually cost more to insure because their lack of experience and their relatively high crash rates mean they may be more likely to get into an accident and file a claim.

    Crash statistics for young drivers

The statistics show that younger drivers are more at risk of being injured in a car accident than older drivers. According to national crash data for 2010. 16- to 24-year-olds were injured in car accidents at nearly twice the rate of Americans that were 25 years old and older.

Younger drivers make up only about 14 percent of the American population, but they account for about 29 percent of the nation’s motor vehicle injury costs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

The CDC also notes that “Per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash.”

There are many reasons why teens are more at risk than other drivers. The following are some of the biggest factors outlined by the CDC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Association:

    • They are more likely to underestimate dangerous situations.
    • They are more likely to not recognize hazardous situations.
    • They have the lowest rate of seat belt use.
    • They have a greater risk of getting into a crash than older drivers if they have any level of blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
    • They are more likely to speed and leave less distance between them and the car in front of them.
    • They are among the groups most likely to text and talk on a cell phone behind the wheel.

    How to keep costs low

Just as in any other insurance shopping situation, the best ways to keep insurance costs low for younger drivers are to shop around, to take advantage of as many discounts as possible, and to keep a clean driving record. Some insurers may be more welcoming of teen drivers and may provide affordable rates, so you’ll have to shop around and find which ones offer the best deals. When you do find one, make sure to ask about discounts for being a good student or taking a driver safety course to see if you qualify. Once you’re on the road, make sure to steer clear of accidents and traffic violations in order to preserve your clean record.

Another thing you can do is choose a car for you or your teen that has relatively low insurance costs. Getting a sportier, more expensive car may leave you or your teen paying higher premiums, while buying a low-key, mid-priced model that has good crash and safety ratings may lower the cost of coverage. You can always get quotes for different vehicles before heading to the dealership to decide on a car.

Why Women Pay Lower Insurance Premiums and How to Get Lower Rates for Male Drivers

It is a well-known fact that men pay higher car insurance rates than women. However, what is not so well known is the reasons why men pay higher car insurance rates. Many people tend to believe it is simply because men usually drive much faster than women that there is such disparity in the rates. While this is true to a certain degree, there are other reasons as well.

Why Men Pay More than Women

Many statistics show that men and women have about an equal number of car accidents every year; however, the types of accidents vary considerably. While women tend to be involved in many minor traffic accidents, men seem to be doing a much better job of causing a great deal of damage to vehicles. This is because men are usually much more aggressive drivers and drive at much higher rates of speed. So, because insurance companies pay out much smaller claims for the minor dings that are often associated with many women s fender benders, men suffer higher insurance premiums because of crash damage that tends to cost a lot more to repair

Typically, women are quoted up to up to 20 percent less than men for their women car insurance quotes. Women receive a female insurance discount. Is there anything men can do to get these lower quotes?

    Working the Odds

A car insurance company is a business. And, like all businesses, they will invest more in something if it comes with fewer risks, and invest less in something that comes with higher risks. Because car insurance companies are investing in drivers, the more likely it is that a driver will get into an accident and thus, cost the insurance company money, the less likely it is that the insurance company will give that driver a low rate on their insurance. These risks are calculated by working the odds. Men, on average, get into more accidents than women. Men between the ages of 16 and 25 get into more accidents than any other demographic. Therefore, their rates are the higher.

    Picking Your Ride

On average, men buy higher end sports cars than women. These cars are more expensive to insure. Also, there is a stereotype that someone who purchases a fast car will engage in risky behavior, like speeding, racing and showboating. Women tend to buy more practical cars with more safety features. Also, some insurance companies will automatically charge more to insure a red car, because red is perceived to be flashy and thus, may indicate a riskier driver.

Saying I Do Leads to Lower Rate

This lower cost is because married men have been shown to drive more defensively and get into fewer accidents than single men. Married men also buy fewer sports cars than single men; once they are married, they are more likely to buy family cars with more safety features.

    Be a Good Driver

Men can always improve their insurance rates by having a clean driving record. By driving at or under the speed limit and always parking legally, men will decrease or eliminate their traffic violations. Fewer traffic violations leads to lower insurance rates. Also, driving defensively and taking as few risks as possible will lead to fewer car accidents. Fewer car accidents also leads to lower insurance rates.

The best way for men to start receiving better rates on their auto insurance is to become better drivers and buy more sensible cars. This will not only improve their insurance rates, but will make the roads safer for everyone.

How to get the best from young drivers’ insurance

You just can t beat the feeling of freedom you get from having your own set of wheels – but finding cheap car insurance for young drivers isn t easy.

It can be frustrating, but don t be surprised if your annual premium costs more than your car. That s because it isn t just based on your car s value, but also on things like how you drive and your driving experience. The harsh truth is that young drivers don t have much experience, so they re more likely to crash and cause injury, which leads to expensive claims and generally higher premiums.

It is, of course, important to make sure you have the right cover so there won t be any nasty surprises if you need to make a claim. And there are some things you can do to reduce your premium in your first years of driving. Here are some suggestions:

Prove you re a safe driver

Before you even pass, you can start to build up your own no claim discount by becoming a named driver. Aviva offer an introductory named driver discount if you ve driven claim-free on someone else s Aviva policy, so it s worth mentioning this if you get a quote.

Put your driving to the test through app-based technology, which gives evidence of your good driving habits to insurers. Our free Aviva Drive app monitors your driving over 200 miles and awards the safest drivers a discount off their car insurance. Safer drivers, who scored 7.1 plus on our Aviva Drive app, saved an average of 112 on their Aviva comprehensive car insurance a saving achieved by 37% of them*. You can even collect driving skills badges along the way and share them on Facebook and Twitter.

    Get a multi-car quote

If you live with your parents, a multi-car policy could be a good way for the family to save money. That s because the car with the lowest premium will get a discount. With Aviva MultiCar. for example, you could save up to 1/3 by insuring a second car or van (we expect 20% of our customers to achieve the maximum saving of 1/3**).

Each vehicle s no claim discount (NCD) is kept separately, so you can build up your own NCD. If a claim is made on one vehicle, the NCD on the other isn t affected. If you re studying away from home and need student car insurance you can still benefit as long as the vehicles are registered at the same address. Find out more in this short video .

    Adding other drivers

If anyone else is going to use your car, you can add them as a named driver so they have the same level of cover as you. It s worth thinking about who you add because insurers will take their risk into consideration and reflect it in your premium. Adding someone older with a clean licence could lower your premium, but anyone with points could increase it.

It s important to make sure that if you are the main driver of the car, the insurance is in your name and you re not just a named driver, or this is called fronting . Fronting has serious financial and legal implications. If detected, a claim could be rejected which would mean that the young driver will be treated as being uninsured and the costs could be recovered from both the driver and the policyholder. So, if you re a student and have a car at university, make sure you re listed as the main driver.

Carefully consider the questions in your quote

It s really important to answer all questions accurately when you get a quote for young drivers car insurance, but think carefully about the answers as they could affect your premium:

    – Usage what you use your car for affects the amount you pay. If you have a part-time or full-time job you ll need to tell your insurer if you use your car to commute to your place of work. If you re a student, you re likely to drive mostly for social reasons so, if that s the case, say so as it could lower your premium.

    – Mileage if you re only going to use your car for short trips, you can cap the mileage on your policy to reduce your premium. This means stating the maximum mileage you think you ll drive in a year e.g. 6,000/year – but make sure it s accurate or you could invalidate your insurance.

    – Parking keeping your car on your driveway or in a garage will reduce the risk of it being stolen or damaged and could reduce your premium.

    – Excess – an excess is the amount you pay towards any claim you make. Most insurers have a minimum excess chargeable for young drivers. You can reduce your premium by increasing your excess, but make sure you ve calculated the total amount you d have to pay in the event of a claim so you know you can afford it. For more information on policy excess, watch this video .

Check you have the right cover

Although finding a low premium is important, make sure you know what you re buying so you have the right cover if you need to make a claim. Look out for independent ratings, such as Defaqto. and check Aviva who share genuine customer reviews. provided by customers who ve made a claim or bought car insurance.

Think carefully about your car and the cover you need

Your first car is unlikely to be a high-performance sports car, which is good news as smaller, less powerful cars generally have lower premiums.

When buying your car, look for any vehicle modifications such as body kits, alloy wheels and even audio equipment that weren t made by the manufacturers as they can increase your premium. You ll need to tell your insurer of all the modifications that have been made when you take out an insurance policy. Also think about its running expenses such as road tax, servicing, the MOT, fuel consumption and even the finance to buy it.

The next thing to think about is whether you need comprehensive or a more basic third party, fire and theft cover. Third party, fire and theft may be a cheaper option, but it won t cover damage to your car if you have an accident; it will only cover damage you cause to other vehicles, persons or property in an accident, plus damage to your car caused by fire or theft.

Driving comes with many responsibilities and one of those is car insurance. Never be tempted to drive without insurance not only will your future insurance premiums be more expensive but it s illegal and could result in a heavy fine, enough penalty points for an instant ban, your vehicle being seized by the police, getting a bad credit rating, reducing your employment prospects and worse of all prison, if you kill somebody whilst driving uninsured (even if it s not your fault).

    Keeping safe at the wheel

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)^, 17-20 year old male drivers are almost 10 times more likely to be killed or injured than more experienced drivers. As a young driver, there s a lot you can do to keep safe at the wheel while you increase your driving experience. Here are some tips:

Think about when you drive. The early hours of the morning are the most risky time for young drivers.

    – Always wear a seat belt and never drive under the influence of drink or drugs you d be breaking the law and putting yourself and others in danger.

    – Never assume that country roads are safe because they re quieter. Take care around sharp bends as it s easy to lose control.

    – Drive more slowly and allow longer stopping distances in wet or icy conditions.

    – Don t get distracted when driving hands-free phones, music, food and drink, smoking and friends chatter can be dangerous as they take your focus from the road.

    – Driving safely also has financial benefits. Accelerating, braking and steering smoothly will be more fuel efficient and cause less wear and tear on your car, which means a better deal for your pocket.

    – Never leave valuables on show in your car it could result in an avoidable break in and claim.

    – Consider using a P plate to warn other road users that you are an inexperienced driver.

Using the USAA discount code is the secret to getting low prices for car rentals for underage drivers and to rent a car if you re between 18 to 25 years old.

The USAA discount code also waives additional driver fees so it could be useful for folks who aren t below 25 years as well!

    Young driver car insurance

    The nuts and bolts

Young drivers typically pay more for car insurance than any other group, leaving them in the words of Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli asking Why me?

But before we go about trying to answer that question, let s look at the extent of the challenge facing new motorists taking out young driver insurance.

    How much?

The average cost of comprehensive motor insurance in the UK is 579 this is according to the latest Towers Watson industry cost index.

The figure actually shows a fall of 15% compared with the second quarter of 2013. Experts partly attribute this to new restrictions on claims management firms, as well as clampdowns on fraud.

In fact, drivers aged 17 and 18 have actually enjoyed the biggest reductions, at 32% and 29% respectively.

But despite this, young drivers typically pay more for their car insurance, as the following industry-wide table suggests:

    How to get LittleBox

One of the main obstacles preventing newly qualified motorists taking advantage of their licence is the high cost of young drivers insurance. Young drivers car insurance can often cost thousands of pounds each year, making it difficult for the majority of these motorists to run their own vehicle.

Admiral LittleBox is aimed at helping lower the cost of young drivers insurance premiums and allowing them to demonstrate their ability behind the wheel. Instead of being branded as reckless drivers because of the actions of other youths and their high claim rates, Littlebox gives you the opportunity to be treated as an individual.

Why is young drivers’ insurance so expensive?

Young drivers are seen by many car insurance companies and fellow motorists as being one of the greatest causes of accidents on the road.

Research by the Association of British Insurers has demonstrated this point, finding that 18 year-old drivers are three times more likely to be involved in an accident than their 48 year-old counterparts (source: ABI 31/10/2012). However, LittleBox by Admiral allows motorists to stand out from the statistics and receive the young drivers insurance policy they deserve.

    Benefits of Admiral LittleBox

Obviously the main advantage of LittleBox is helping motorists overcome the high premiums associated with young drivers car insurance.

We will cover the cost of having the device fitted to your car as well as immediately giving you a discount on your young drivers car insurance.

LittleBox young drivers insurance provides a courtesy car while yours is repaired at one of our approved repairers if you take out a comprehensive policy.

Additionally, Littlebox offers inclusive National Plus Breakdown cover and Theft Tracking in the event of your vehicle being stolen – to keep you worry-free when on the road.

Why Ontario drivers pay the highest car insurance rates in the country – The Globe and Mail #vintage #cars

    #car insurance ontario
    #

Why Ontario drivers pay the highest car insurance rates in the country Add to.

Nick Dasko bought his first car when he was 22 – a seven-year-old Mazda Protege that cost him $10,000. Then came the insurance bill: more than $6,000, even though he had no tickets or at-fault accidents.

Some of his friends were paying even more – $10,000 was not unheard of.

Auto insurance is the wild west of compulsory services. If you want to drive, you have no choice but to buy it – but what you pay varies wildly. According to quotes obtained Tuesday from kanetix.ca, a 20-year-old male in Winnipeg with a clean driving record would pay $1,396 driving a 2008 Honda Civic DX two-door coupe for pleasure (not to commute to school or work) and compiling 15,000 km/year. In Calgary, that same driver would pay between $2,973 and  $3,789. In Toronto, the bill would range from $4,239 to $9,270  – an increase of 664 per cent.

    The obvious question – why?

While it costs more to cover claims in Ontario (the province is plagued by insurance fraud) private insurers claim that the actuarial evidence used to rate drivers shows that males under 25 have the worst statistical record as a group. Consequently, individuals in the 16-to-24 group pay more, even if they’ve never been involved in an accident or received a ticket for a traffic violation. Essentially, young men are deemed guilty until proven innocent – at age 25.

“You are being prejudged,” says Dasko. “It’s the last legal form of discrimination.”

Public auto insurance programs, such as those in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, take a different approach. Standard rates apply to every driver, regardless of age or gender. Auto insurance is much less expensive for a 20-year-old full-time student in Winnipeg driving the same car as his counterparts in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary.

The private insurance industry defends the actuarial approach. “It’s not discriminatory,” says Pete Karageorgos, manager of consumer and industry relations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada. “It’s based purely on statistical analysis. It’s like charging more for house insurance in a high-risk neighbourhood. I think people have accepted this. In a public auto insurance system, young drivers are subsidized. In Ontario, young drivers pay rates that reflect their actual risk.”

Statistics show that young drivers do cause a disproportionate amount of damage. Drivers aged 16 to 24 represent 13 per cent of the driving population, but account for 24 per cent of fatalities and 26 per cent of serious injuries. The question is whether Ontario’s steep insurance charges for young drivers accurately reflect actuarial data.

State Farm Insurance spokesman John Bordignon says Toronto is a “special case”: “It’s got the highest population density, the worst roads, and a high rate of theft. The costs reflect those risks.”

Contrary to the public system, in Ontario, Alberta and other provinces, every driver must help bear layers of extra costs. Ontario’s industry is made up of more than 100 private companies that are overseen by a government agency called the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. Revenue comes from two sources – insurance premiums, and the money insurers make by investing the money consumers give them.

Private insurers say that their system has the built-in advantage of competition: “If you’re not satisfied with your insurer, you can go shop around,” says Karageorgos. “With government insurance, there’s no choice. Private insurance gives you better service.”

Not everyone agrees. The Consumers Association of Canada (CAC) deems private auto insurance to be one of the biggest rip-offs that Canadians face. After studying the industry for years, CAC concluded that a properly run public insurance system was the best choice, but found itself locked into a debilitating public relations battle with the private industry.

“There are some things that should be run by private industry,” says CAC president Bruce Cran. “And there are others that should be in the hands of government. Auto insurance is one of them.”

Cran says that excessive insurance charges affect everyone, not just drivers: “The costs run through the entire economy,” he says. “Everything you buy, every last piece of bread you eat, is carried in a vehicle that has to be insured. So we all pay, whether we have a car or not.”

The CAC’s investigation of the insurance industry yielded interesting insights into the way it operates, and why costs are so high. In 2004, for example, CAC learned that private insurers had paid $290-million in secret commissions to insurance brokers who steered business their way. This practice had a direct impact on consumers – instead of hunting for the best price for their customers, brokers sold the policy that offered them the highest commission.

A public auto insurance system can offer fundamental business advantages. Most important, a public system reduces overhead costs – instead of multiple companies, each with its own head office, computer systems, etc. there is just one, which cuts duplication and creates efficiencies of scale.

Other significant savings include profit margin (public insurance systems don’t have to pay dividends to shareholders) and advertising – public systems don’t have to budget for TV spots and a talking gecko. Public insurance plans can also control costs more effectively – body shops, medical clinics and towing companies must comply with rates set by the public plan, which wields monopoly power over suppliers. Ontario’s private insurers, on the other hand, face ongoing problems with gouging and fraud.

As with U.S. health care, the debate over private and public auto insurance has been cast along ideological lines that obscure underlying economic realities. Ontario’s private insurance firms admit that rates here are the highest, yet insist that theirs is the superior business model.

    CROSS-CANADA PREMIUM QUOTES

Using the website kanetix.ca on Tuesday, we obtained quotes for a 20-year-old full-time male student, in the 16-to-24 age group. We listed him as principal driver, clean record, living at home, using a 2008 Honda Civic DX two-door coupe for pleasure (not to commute to school or work) and compiling 15,000 km/year. Deductible was $500 for collision and comprehensive, with $1-million liability. The site harvests quotes from different companies, but those companies do not necessarily quote for all cities; the Canadian Automobile Association does not sell service in Montreal. The Manitoba rate was obtained directly from a dedicated website. *Kanetix provides a “lowest rate” but does not identify it until the consumer calls for a quote.
