What Is HIV, don sida.

HIV & AIDS

What is HIV?

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. It damages your immune system, making it easier for you to get sick. HIV is spread during sex, but condoms can help protect you.

Want to get tested for HIV?

HIV/AIDS is a serious infection

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It’s a virus that breaks down certain cells in your immune system (your body’s defense against diseases that helps you stay healthy). When HIV damages your immune system, it’s easier to get really sick and even die from infections that your body could normally fight off.

HIV can affect anybody — about 1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, and more than 41,000 new infections happen every year. Most people with HIV don’t have any symptoms for many years and feel totally fine, so they might not even know they have it.

Once you have HIV, the virus stays in your body for life. There’s no cure for HIV, but medication can help you stay healthy longer and lower your chances of spreading the virus to other people. Treatment is really important (that’s why getting tested is so important). People who have HIV and don’t get treatment almost always die from the virus. But with medication, people with HIV can be healthy and live a long time.

What’s the difference between HIV and AIDS?

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. HIV and AIDS are not the same thing. And people with HIV do not always have AIDS.

HIV is the virus that’s passed from person to person. Over time, HIV destroys an important kind of the cell in your immune system (called CD4 cells or T cells) that helps protect you from infections. When you don’t have enough of these CD4 cells, your body can’t fight off infections the way it normally can.

AIDS is the disease caused by the damage that HIV does to your immune system. You have AIDS when you get dangerous infections or have a super low number of CD4 cells. AIDS is the most serious stage of HIV, and it leads to death over time.

Without treatment, it usually takes about 10 years for someone with HIV to develop AIDS. Treatment slows down the damage the virus causes and can help people stay healthy for several decades.

How do you get HIV/AIDS?

HIV is carried in semen (cum), vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk. The virus gets in your body through cuts or sores in your skin, and through mucous membranes (like the inside of the vagina, rectum, and opening of the penis). You can get HIV from:

having vaginal or anal sex

sharing needles or syringes for shooting drugs, piercings, tattoos, etc.

getting stuck with a needle that has HIV-infected blood on it

getting HIV-infected blood, semen (cum), or vaginal fluids into open cuts or sores on your body

In the U.S., HIV is usually spread through having unprotected sex. Using condoms and/or dental dams every time you have sex and not sharing needles can help protect you and your partners from HIV.

HIV can also be passed to babies during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding. A pregnant woman with HIV can take medicine to greatly reduce the chance that her baby will get HIV.

HIV isn’t spread through saliva (spit), so you CAN’T get HIV from kissing, sharing food or drinks, or using the same fork or spoon. HIV is also not spread through hugging, holding hands, coughing, or sneezing. And you can’t get HIV from a toilet seat.

A long time ago, some people got HIV from infected blood transfusions. But now, giving or getting blood in medical centers is totally safe. Doctors, hospitals, and blood donation centers don’t use needles more than once, and donated blood is tested for HIV and other infections.

Delle Donne opens up about battling Lyme disease, don donne.

Delle Donne opens up about battling Lyme disease

Chicago Sky forward Elena Delle Donne has missed four games while battling another flare-up of Lyme disease.

There was a time, not too long ago, when 24-year-old Elena Delle Donne thought she was dying.

We’re talking about the same Elena Delle Donne who is the Chicago Sky’s leading scorer (22.3 ppg), was named the WNBA’s rookie of the year last summer, and is widely regarded as one of the best young women’s basketball players in the world.

The 6-foot-5 forward felt so tired and sick she could barely get out of bed or lift her arms above her head long enough to change clothes. She had horrible migraine headaches.

“I said to my parents, ‘Check me into a hospital. There’s something terribly wrong with me and I don’t know what’s going on,'” Delle Donne said. “So many doctors would see me and run their tests and say, ‘You’re fine. You’re a healthy girl. There’s something wrong with you mentally. You’re depressed.’ I was like, ‘I am not depressed. There’s nothing wrong with me (mentally). I’m sick.’

“I thought basketball was over. I even thought that I wasn’t going to be able to graduate college because I was too tired to even get up and go to class.”

Delle Donne has Lyme disease. She’s had it since the summer after her senior year in high school in 2008 when she was bitten by an infected tick while on her family’s property in Delaware.

The consensus Naismith National High School Basketball Player of the Year took medications immediately and was perfectly fine for two full years until, unbeknown to her, the disease resurfaced with a vengeance in 2010 while she was a sophomore at Delaware. Delle Donne missed 12 games for the Blue Hens during the 2010-11 season, but it wasn’t until she found a Lyme specialist that she realized the health problems she was experiencing were caused by a flare-up of her Lyme disease, which does not have a cure but can be controlled with medications.

Delle Donne has been having more flare-ups lately, and that hasn’t been good for the Sky. Heading into Friday’s game at Allstate Arena against Indiana, Delle Donne had missed three straight games. The last time she had played was June 7 at Atlanta. The Sky, which started 5-1 and is now 6-5, lost two of its three games without Delle Donne.

Each time Delle Donne has a serious flare-up, the last of which occurred at the beginning of her senior season at Delaware, her doctors must adjust the elaborate cocktail of medications she takes. It can take time to get everything just so, which is why Delle Donne hasn’t been played recently.

“It’s just all a guessing game on the medications and what I need,” Delle Donne said. “There’s no scientific cure, there’s no answer. It’s just all guessing, and that’s hard.”

Even more difficult is the unpredictability of Lyme disease. Delle Donne began the WNBA season feeling stronger, fitter and healthier than ever. She gained 12 pounds of muscle in the offseason through hard training.

But lately, she’s felt weaker and vulnerable.

“That (the unpredictability) is the worst part,” Delle Donne said. “I’ll be feeling fine and literally the next day wake up and feel awful. It’s not fun. It’s actually pretty scary, but it kind of teaches you to live in the moment and enjoy your time on the court, because you never know when that will be taken away from you. It just kind of lets me live in the present.”

Delle Donne, who is noticeably anxious and impatient as she watches games in street clothes from the bench, desperately wants to play again.

But she knows how important it is to be medicated properly. Her life, and her career, depends on it. So she waits.

In the meantime, Delle Donne does whatever she can to get the word out about Lyme disease. Usually private and guarded, she now speaks freely about her condition.

“At the beginning, I struggled a little bit with sharing that I have Lyme disease and that I was ill, especially because when you’re a professional athlete you need to seem healthy and that you’re going to be able to contribute to a team,” Delle Donne said. “But I thought to myself that if someone else is experiencing what I’ve experienced and they hear my story and I can help them, that’s great and far more important to me.

“There are a lot of people who are struggling (with Lyme disease) far worse than I am. People with it are bedridden or have lost their memory or have heart problems. It’s just a terrible, terrible disease.”

In April, Delle Donne received the Star Light Award from the Lyme Research Alliance for helping to educate Americans about Lyme disease, which is diagnosed in 300,000 people every year.

“I speak out about it and try to tell my story and be open with it, even with the media, just so people know what’s going on,” Delle Donne said. “We need to find a test that will diagnose people correctly, and we need a cure. There have been other illnesses out there that have been cured — why can’t Lyme disease be the next?”

Cool French – Argument

The French do not always consider having an argument as negative or destructive, particularly for couples. In fact, you can’t really say you have a normal relationship if you haven’t been through a good old row. Now, breaking the crockery is optional, but using the right line at the right time is absolutely essential.

So here’s a list of expressions that will enable you to have a pretty decent argument with a French partner or close friend; the perfect come-backs to that provocative Tu me cherches? (*) Are you looking for trouble?

Looking for trouble

Get lost!

You’re getting on my nerves

Are you taking the mickey?

Who do you think I am?

I don’t believe it!

Looking for trouble

T’as un problème ? (*) Got a problem?

Not very original, but you have to find a way to start an argument somehow.

More or less same use as above.

C’est à moi que tu parles ? / C’est à moi que tu causes ? (*)

Are you talking to me?

Probably originates from Scorcese’s Taxi Driver. Remember, there is nothing better than completely ignoring someone, particularly when there are only the two of you in a room. Expect a heated argument.

Most arguments stem from confusion. Either you genuinely don’t know what the other one is talking about, or you pretend you don’t.

To make someone understand that the way they are looking at you is bothering them.

Really implies that someone is looking for trouble.

Get Lost!

When someone is getting too nosy and asking awkward questions, there’s always a way to change the subject.

The whole expression should be Ne t’occupe pas de ça.

Q: Tu étais où hier soir ? Where were you last night?

Q: Tu étais où hier soir ? Where were you last night?

Q: Tu étais où hier soir ? Where were you last night?

You’re getting on my nerves

Sometimes you just can’t be bothered to justify yourself because you feel you haven’t done anything wrong. Quite legitimately, you have to answer back.

Tu m’emmerdes ! (***) You’re annoying me. Lit. You’re crapping on me.

Q: Qui t’a offert ces fleurs ? Who gave you these flowers?

A: Tu m’emmerdes avec tes questions. (***)

A: Tu me fais chier ! (***) Lit. You make me shit

You’re a pain in the ass/you’re really getting on my nerves/you’re really pissing me off.

Q: Qui t’a offert ces fleurs ? Who gave you these flowers?

A: Tu me prends la tête avec tes questions. (**)

Q: Qui t’a offert ces fleurs ? Who gave you these flowers?

A: Tu me gonfles avec tes questions. (**)

Are you taking the mickey?

Are you making fun of me, or what? A good way to say: Do you think I’m an idiot? Do you really think I’m going to believe this whopper of a lie? The grammatical construction is a bit difficult here, so the best thing to do is learn this expression by heart.

Tonight I’m going out with my cousin.

A: Tu te fous de ma gueule, ou quoi ? (**)

I saw you kiss someone in a café.

Who do you think I am?

Tu me prends pour qui ? / Qu’est-ce qu’il y a marqué, ici ? (*) Who do you think I am?

The latter litterally translates as “What does it say here?” Interesting expression as it’s combined with a gesture: a finger pointing at your forehead. When your partner takes you for a ride, it’s a way to say “Do you think I’m completely stupid?” It’s always good to play the victim every now and then.

Could be used to say that you are not the expert in something and you don’t want to do it – eg: Il n’y a pas marqué taxi ici means “I’m not a taxi driver” if you refuse to drive someone somewhere.

I don’t believe it!

J’hallucine ! (*) I am hallucinating.

I can’t believe what I am seeing or hearing.

Hallu sounds cooler than the whole word hallucination.

Just because you are angry, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use cool expressions.

When Should You Trade In Your Car? Don t Listen To What Others Say Run The Numbers Yourself

The week’s most interesting and impactful posts about financial lifestyle.

A reader writes in describing a debate she s having with her husband:

I m not sure but someplace on your site I think I saw something about how often to trade in your old car. Our SUV is a 2005 with 55,000 miles on it. My husband says its time to trade it in. He says the longer we drive it the worse off we will be. I m not so sure. We will pay cash for the difference if we trade. Can you give us any pointers?

The husband s philosophy, if I understand it correctly, is that the older a car is, the less trade-in value it will have and that s absolutely correct. An older vehicle will have less trade-in value.

But let s look at some real numbers. Let s look at the trade value of Dodge Durangos (they have a SUV, after all) from 1998 to 2006 and assume the median of the range given.

A new midrange 2008 Dodge Durango, according to AOL Autos, costs $31,835. Let s just assume this is the price one would have paid in earlier years for a Durango. It may have been less, but probably not significantly so.

A 2006 Dodge Durango would have been owned for 24 months and would have a cash value of $18,225. This is a total depreciation of $13,610, or $567 a month for the entire time of ownership.

A 2005 Dodge Durango would have been owned for 36 months and would have a cash value of $14,062.50. This is a total depreciation of $17,772.50, or $493 a month for the entire time of ownership. Over that last twelve month period, the vehicle only depreciated $4,162.50 or $347 a month.

Let s keep going for two more years so the picture becomes clearer. A 2004 Dodge Durango would have been owned for 48 months and would have a cash value of $12,500. This is a total depreciation of $19,335, or $402 a month. Even more impressive, over that last twelve month period, the vehicle only depreciated $1,562.50 or $130 a month.

A 2003 Dodge Durango would have been owned for 60 months and would have a cash value of $10,512.50. This is a total depreciation of $21,322.50, or $355 a month. Again, over that last twelve month period, the vehicle only depreciated $1,987.50 or $166 a month.

What s the meaning of this data? The longer you hold onto a car, the less it depreciates each year, and thus the more cost-effective it becomes. A 2003 Durango has a trade value much less than a 2006 Durango, but if you break it down into the depreciation per month, the person owning the 2003 Durango lost much less money per month than the owner of the 2006 Durango.

Another thing to notice is that car depreciation is at its worst during the first few years of owning a car. Thus, to maximize the bang for your buck, your best bet is to buy a model three or four years old. That way, it doesn t depreciate thousands of dollars each year you own it.

What s the conclusion? The best value in cars is buying a late model used and driving it until the repair bills start seriously racking up. This plan minimizes the per-year cost of your car and gives you the most years of cost-effective reliability. If you insist on buying new (not the best move), the more years you drive your older car, the more cost-effective your purchase becomes.

Upgrading a three year old car to a new model is not cost-effective in any real way the only advantage it provides you is the prestige of constantly having a new car at the cost of many hundreds of dollars a month versus using a more cost-effective method of getting around.

Do’s and don’ts of getting rid of your old car

I have only ever owned two cars, and a thief relieved me of the last one. So when it came to saying goodbye to my defunct 13-year-old Alfa estate, lying abandoned with a dead battery outside my house since November, I realised I had no idea how to actually get rid of a vehicle. Could I sell it? Scrap it? Give it away?

Every year in Britain between six and seven million used cars are sold, and two million are scrapped. The EU has introduced strict environmental rules on how cars should be disposed of through its End of Life Vehicle Directive, while new rules designed to combat copper and other metal theft have had the curious impact of making it illegal for car owners to be paid cash when scrapping a vehicle.

So what is the best way to rid yourself of an ageing car? Where can you obtain the best price? And how can you be sure the buyer isn’t some rogue who will take your car, yet leave you still liable for potential speeding tickets and fines?

Selling

Autotrader.co.uk is probably the best place to start (full disclosure: The Guardian Media Group has a 50% share in the company, although it last month announced it was selling this). You can enter your car registration and mileage for free, then it finds the vehicle and gives an immediate suggested selling price. Advertising on the site costs from 9.99 to 19.99. In my case it said the car was worth around 600. But what the computer didn’t know was that the MOT and tax was due to run out in three days’ time, there was no proper service history, and I was pretty sure it would fail the MOT – and, with a corroded battery, even jump-starting looked out of the question.

Trading in an old car when buying a new one is seen as bad value. Photograph: David Cheskin/PA

Gumtree is another option. Its chief advantage is that advertising is free (although it will encourage you to pay for premium services) and clearly the site has lots of old bangers like mine for sale. But again, with just days to go before I risked being clamped for failing to have a tax disc, I decided against.

How about Webuyanycar.com. It offered 285, but it prefers you have an MOT lasting at least one month and two sets of keys – both fails for my Alfa. Plus (something of a problem) I’d have to drive it to a local centre. and they’re not keen on non-runners in any case.

Trading in your old car when buying a new one is discouraged as bad value by many motoring experts. Back in November I bought a new car, and at that point thought it might be useful to keep the Alfa as a second vehicle, given it was still taxed and insured for a few months. But those months slip away, and I realise now that had I traded it in then (for around 400) I would have saved a lot of hassle.

Scrapping

The good news is that the days when drivers had to trawl round dodgy car breaking yards are over. Now just pop scrap my car into Google and up comes dozens of companies that promise to collect your car within days – and pay you as well.

But are these safe? The first one I emailed gave me an instant quote of 120 – and rang almost immediately, saying they’d pop round in an hour. And this was a Sunday afternoon. It’s the sort of offer that rings alarm bells; were they a registered scrap dealer? (he mumbled something about a certificate coming soon); would he pay cash? (should be able to – which later I realised is a no-no); and would it definitely be scrapped? (er, he might sell it abroad). At this point I realised more research was necessary.

Rules introduced in 2005 make it a legal requirement that any car sent to be scrapped must go to an Authorised Treatment Facility. All car scrapyards must have a licence issued by the Environment Agency or Scottish Environment Protection Agency to ensure that scrapped vehicles don’t harm the environment (all that battery acid, gearbox oil and engine parts) and that they are recycled appropriately.

All the car scrapping sites that came up on my Google search allowed me to enter my car registration and came back with quotes for how much they’d pay me. The range was between 150- 200 if I took the car to the yard, or 50 or so less if I wanted it collected from home.

You must tell the DVLA if you send your vehicle to scrap. Photograph: Chris Radburn/PA

Which sites should you trust? Under the EU directive, the car manufacturers are ultimately responsible for ensuring vehicles are recycled properly, and that cars can be disposed of for free.

Many have linked up with either cartakeback.com or rewardingrecycling.co.uk. which says it has handled the destruction of 1.25m cars. Ford in the UK says cartakeback.com is its recycling partner, while Toyota is linked to rewardingrecycling.co.uk, although both sites deal with virtually all brands of car.

They don’t scrap the car themselves but get a local recycling centre to contact you. In my case, both offered around 150 for home collection.

What happens next? Dig out your V5 ownership document, follow the instructions and send the relevant part to the DVLA, which should confirm to you that you’re no longer responsible for the car. The scrap dealer should send you a Certificate of Destruction, and should also tell the DVLA you don’t own the car anymore.

If the dealer says they’ll pay you in cash it’s a sure sign they are dodgy. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, introduced last October to combat metal theft, particularly copper from railway lines, it is illegal for anyone to pay cash for scrap cars. Most will issue a cheque or make a payment directly into your bank account. When selling, you have to give proof of identification, such as your driving licence or passport.

Remember to claw back any road tax or insurance you have on the vehicle. You can reclaim any unused complete months of road tax from the DVLA by downloading form V14 and returning it along with your tax disc to the DVLA.

Giving it away

There are a number of organisations that will take your clapped-out car and donate the money to charity. The leading one is giveacar.co.uk. while cartakeback.com operates charitycar.co.uk. Oxfam runs a donation service at oxfam.org.uk. which since 2006 has raised 100,000-plus through the sale of more than 350 cars.

2015 Honda Civic

Over the past month, we helped 97,584 new car buyers find their perfect car!

New/Notable:

  • Sold in coupe or sedan body styles
  • Best-selling compact car in America
  • Carryover with no updates for 2015

The 2015 Honda Civic is the latest version of the popular compact car and carries over unchanged for the 2015 model year.

The last few years have been very busy for the Civic. It got a complete redesign in 2012, a refresh for sedan models in 2013, and a refresh for the coupe and Si in 2014, so Honda s engineers get to take a breath for 2015.

Exterior styling varies by body style, with the sedan offering a more sedate look while the coupe is much more menacing, with sharper lines and a more aggressive front end. The coupe also has a pair of very prominent fog light recesses flanking the lower air intake which give the Civic coupe a distinct look up front. There are no less than six wheel choices, and fog lights and a power moonroof are optional. Sporty Si models get their own visual signatures, with side sills and Si badging, along with unique wheels.

Coupe and Sedan models share a 143-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Last year, the Civic got a new CVT transmission with paddle shifters that replaced the five-speed automatic. It joins a five-speed manual among the transmission options, while the Si gets a six-speed manual. The Civic puts a premium on fuel economy; sedan models return 30/39 mpg city/highway with the CVT (28/36 with the manual), with the coupe achieving similar figures (29/38 on higher trim levels). Under the hood of Si models is a 205-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder.

Since the updates in 2013 and 2014, the Civic cabin has been a personal favorite thanks to its liberal use of high quality materials, backseat room, and comfortable seating. It s a compact car that feels larger and more upscale than its compact price would suggest. Similar to the sporty CR-Z, the center console is slightly canted towards the driver offering easier access to controls for the climate and audio systems. Standard features include a color i-MID display, Bluetooth connectivity, Pandora internet radio, SMS support, and a USB/iPod port, all of which make the Civic one of the most tech friendly out of the box cars around. A navigation system, leather upholstery, and heated front seats are optional.

The 2015 Civic also offers a class-exclusive standard rearview camera, along with antilock brakes, six airbags, and an electronic stability system with traction control. For its performance in crash testing, the Civic got a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, their highest designation.
