    I MIGLIORI SITI LOW COST

    2017 Alarm System Repair Costs

How Much Does it Cost to Repair an Alarm or Security System?

Occasionally, home alarms or security systems experience a malfunction/failure and require repair. In general, most home security repair jobs require professional assistance from the alarm company or a specialized repair service. Here are some factors that influence the complexity and cost of such a repair.

How Does a Security System Work?

Many basic systems use circuit breakers or switches installed in doors and windows of the home. When the door or window opens, the circuit is broken and an alarm sounds. The alarm can then be disabled by means of a code entered into a nearby keypad in case of authorized entry. Otherwise, the alarm will persist, alerting neighbors, and if a monitoring system is in place, the police will be contacted. The initial installation or replacement of a security system will cost between $514 to $676 on average.

    Reasons for Repair

These are a few examples of why an alarm system may require repair:

    • False alarms: Essentially, the alarm goes off without any obvious reason, which in some areas can result in fines from local law enforcement.
    • Faulty window alarm contacts: The circuit breakers for one or more windows no longer functions properly.
    • Faulty door alarm contacts: The same as above but for doorway alarm switches.
    • Alarm battery replacement: Systems often run with a battery backup that may need periodic replacement. Additionally, motion detectors need battery changes every one to two years, depending on the type used.
    • Bad power supplies: The main power supply may require replacement, especially if it is an older unit.
    • Annoying alarm beeps: These are difficult to diagnose, but the alarm consistently beeps for no discernible reason. Sometimes, it’s as simple as the battery.

    Why Hire a Professional

Having security system issues diagnosed and repaired by professionals makes sense in a lot of cases. Oftentimes, the job is too complex for the average homeowner. Why else shouldn’t homeowners DIY their alarm system repair?

    1. Some repair work associated with security systems is very delicate and requires specialized tools to be certain that the job is done right and that the repair will last. Most homeowners do not own tools for this kind of job.

    2. Some stripping and splicing may be necessary to complete repairs. Professionals have the experience and proper equipment to tell a live wire from a safe one and avoid unnecessary electrical shocks a lot more easily than the average homeowner.

    3. Setting an alarm off while attempting a repair is relatively easy to do. Professionals are more savvy and can often disable the alarm temporarily to conduct repairs or communicate with the monitoring service to set the alarm in test mode.

    Monitored vs. Unmonitored Security Systems

A monitored system goes through a security company that is alerted when the alarm goes off and can help manage situations where the system becomes active, including home-invasions and false alarms.

    Unmonitored systems

Homeowners using these systems must test and repair them without prearranged assistance. In this scenario, a homeowner would be advised to contact a specialized repair service for maintenance and repairs, which can be somewhat costly. The cost of maintaining a system is extremely variable.

    Monitored systems

These may include free or reduced-cost technical support for maintenance and repair. This makes it easier for a homeowner to keep their system in excellent condition and able to have more confidence in its functionality should an emergency happen. On average, homeowners can expect to pay about $300 per year for monitoring.

All of this influences the potential cost of security or alarm system repair, whether it involves simple battery replacement or full or partial rewiring of the system. Either way, professional repair is the safest option that is most likely to yield quality results.

Cost of Medicare Part B – Part A

    #how #much #does #medicare #cost #in

    #

What is the Cost of Medicare Part B and A?

Original Medicare covers many services. but it is not free. There is a cost associated with each part B and Part A. and you can learn more about each of them below.

What costs should I know for Part A?

    Medicare Part A Premium

Most people do not have to pay a premium for Part A because they (or their spouse) paid for it while they worked. If you do have to pay Part A premiums, the longer you or your spouse worked and paid into Social Security, the lower your premiums will be.

    Medicare Part A Deductible

Part A doesn’t have an annual deductible but rather applies a deductible to each hospital benefit period. A benefit period begins when you go into a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF) and ends when you have been out of the hospital or SNF for 60 consecutive days.

    Copayments

Copays for Part A apply once you stay in a hospital for more than 60 days in a single benefit period. In a skilled nursing facility. copays begin after the first 20 days.

If you have a limited income and resources, you may qualify for help with your Parts A B costs.

    Hospital stays

For a hospital stay. you will pay a deductible of $1,316. This is not an annual deductible. You pay this deductible once each benefit period. Your payment changes as you stay in the hospital.

    Skilled nursing facility stays

For a skilled nursing facility stay, there is no deductible. Medicare will only cover up to 100 days in a skilled nursing facility though, and only if you meet some very specific criteria:

    • 3-Day Hospital Stay: You must have been at a hospital
      • For 3 days AND
      • Had come to a skilled nursing facility within 30 days of the hospitalization AND
      • Had been admitted to the hospital as an inpatient. Time in the emergency room or in what the hospital calls “observation status” does not count, even if you stayed overnight or longer.
    • Level of Care: You must also need skilled nursing care 7 days a week, or skilled therapy services 5 days a week.
    • Part A: Skilled nursing care is covered under Medicare Part A. You must have had Part A while you were in the hospital.

Also, keep in mind that Medicare will NOT cover your stay if you only need help with personal care (also called custodial care), such as bathing, eating or dressing yourself. Here is what you will pay for a stay in a skilled nursing facility.

There is no deductible or copayment for home healthcare. However, you do need to meet a set of very specific criteria in order for Medicare to cover your home healthcare.

Medicare covers home healthcare services when a doctor certifies that:

    • You need medical care at home AND
    • You are homebound AND
    • You need skilled care from a nurse or a skilled physical, speech or occupational therapist.

Medicare will only cover home care services when your doctor:

    • Orders the care from a home health agency that Medicare approves, AND
    • Documents a face-to-face visit with you up to 3 months before or 1 month after the start of the service, AND
    • Signs a plan for your care.

There is no deductible or copayment for hospice care. You only pay a small share of the costs of medications and inpatient respite care under the Medicare hospice benefit.

What costs should I know for Part B?

    Medicare Part B Premium

There is a monthly premium for Part B coverage. For Medicare beneficiaries with incomes below $85K/single or $170K/couple, the Part B premium cost for 2017 will average between $109 and $134 per month. For Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes, the Part B premium cost will range from $187.50 to $428.60 per month, based on income level. Medicare beneficiaries who meet certain income and resource guidelines can get their Part B premium paid for by their state’s Medicare Savings Program .

    Medicare Part B Deductible

You will also pay an annual deductible of $183 in 2017. That means when you receive services covered by Part B, you will pay $183 before Medicare starts helping you pay. People with Medicare with incomes less than 100% of federal poverty level – about $990/month – and few resources can be excused from paying the Medicare deductible and coinsurance .

    Coinsurance

Once you have paid your deductible, you will then pay 20% of the cost approved by Medicare for most Medicare Part B services.

    Accepting assignment

To keep your Part B costs down, make sure that your healthcare providers take Medicare and “accept assignment .” Doctors or other providers who accept assignment agree to accept the amount that Medicare will pay for a visit or service (called the Medicare-approved amount) as payment in full. So you would only pay the 20% coinsurance.

Providers who see people with Medicare but do not accept assignment can charge you more. They can charge you up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount, which means that you would pay your usual 20% coinsurance plus up to an extra 15%.

For example, if the Medicare-approved amount for a doctor visit was $100, but your doctor did not accept assignment, he could charge you up to $115 for your visit. You would pay $35 (20% of the $100 Medicare-approved amount, plus the extra $15 not covered by Medicare).

    Opting out

Providers can also “opt out” of the Medicare program. That means that they can charge you whatever they like for a service and will not bill Medicare. If you see a provider that has opted out of Medicare, you will have to pay the full cost of the service you receive; Medicare will not pay any part of the cost. Providers that opt out of Medicare should have you sign a contract saying that you understand that you will have to pay the full cost of the service.

How to Lower Your Term Life Rates, low cost term life insurance. #Low #cost #term #life #insurance

How to Lower Your Term Life Rates

Whether you already have a term life policy or are in need of coverage, you can always lower your premiums with the right tactics. Finding low cost term life policies need not be time-consuming or dauntingly complex. In fact, getting the lowest term life insurance rates can be as simple as shopping online or changing how frequently you pay your premiums. In this article, you will learn how to achieve the lowest term life premiums while expending minimal effort.

    1. Use the Internet to shop for policies. The Internet is the marketplace most likely to offer the lowest term life insurance rate on your coverage of choice, particularly if you use LifeInsuranceRates.com. Shopping online lowers your term life rates in two ways. First, life insurers compete more directly on the Internet. You reap the rewards of that competition in the form of lower premiums. Second, you can easily access this competition by taking advantage of the LifeInsuranceRates.com multi-quote request system.
    2. Pay your premiums once per year. Typically, a very low term life insurance rate is available to policyholders willing to pay their entire premium in a lump sum annually. Although life insurers may offer quarterly or monthly payment plans, the premiums for such payment schedules are usually higher. Budget your money so you can take care of your term life insurance premium in one payment for long-term savings.
    3. Live healthier. Regardless of your health, you will not be privy to the lowest term life insurance premiums if you use nicotine, have diabetes, or are even slightly overweight. Fortunately, many of these issues are correctable. Losing just five to ten pounds might be enough to push you into a better rate class. Likewise, quitting smoking and remaining smoke-free for six months to a year may also entitle you to lower term life rates.
    4. If you see an improvement in your health, request a reevaluation. Remember that the premiums you pay for term coverage are based on the results of the medical exam you took before you were approved for coverage. If your health improves significantly from when you took your life insurance exam, you might ask your insurer for a reevaluation. Losing weight, quitting smoking, consuming less alcohol, and lowering your blood pressure are all positive life changes that will improve your chances of getting low cost term life insurance if you’re willing to submit to another medical exam.

About California’s Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program

California Law requires that all drivers of vehicles within the State maintain evidence of financial responsibility. California’s Low Cost Automobile Program (CLCA) was established by the Legislature in 1999 and exists pursuant to California Insurance Code Section 11629.7 as a program designed to provide income eligible persons with liability insurance protection at affordable rates as a way to meet California’s financial responsibility laws.

However, too many income eligible drivers remain uninsured because the costs of standard insurance premiums are beyond their financial reach. Learn about affordable solutions that may help protect you, your friends, family and other drivers on the road.

Effective January 01, 2015 a new law, SB 1273 passed by the Governor on September 19, 2014, provides an exception to the three-year continuously licensed requirement to allow drivers with less than 3 years verifiable driving experience to participate in the program and increased vehicle values from $20,000 to $25,000. Florida Auto Insurance – Get a Free Quote Online

    Low cost automobile insurance program

Acceptance knows what makes a great Florida auto insurance policy: outstanding value for the money and first-rate customer service. We offer value to our customers with a diverse selection of auto insurance products, so you can get the policy that’s right for your needs, including these fundamental types of coverage:

    • Florida requires drivers to carry at least $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 of property damage liability coverage.

    Basic Liability Coverage

Drivers in this state are legally required to carry Florida auto insurance with at least the basic property damage liability coverage. This type of insurance covers the other driver’s property in the event of a collision for which you are at fault. Most serious collisions are far more expensive than that though, so it’s a good idea to consider additional coverage. However, Florida does not require bodily injury liability coverage. This means that if you are at fault in an accident and the other driver incurs accident-related medical expenses, your insurance would not cover any of it. Bodily injury liability insurance is highly recommended in Florida so you will be covered in case of an at-fault accident.

    Personal Injury Protection

In Florida, all drivers are legally required to purchase personal injury protection, or PIP. This covers the majority of medical expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of who is at fault in an accident. This coverage also covers, in part, lost wages, all replacement services such as child car, housekeeping or lawn work. It also provides a death benefit.

    Comprehensive and Collision Coverage

Adding comprehensive and collision protection to your policy is a smart move. A comprehensive and collision policy will cover your property repair and replacement costs following an accident – not just the other driver’s – and you can even add rental car coverage. Comprehensive coverage applies to things like fire, theft, vandalism and other types of damage, as well. If you’re worried about the monthly payments, Acceptance has you covered. You can always choose a higher deductible to lower your policy premiums.

    Uninsured Motorist Coverage

If you want to know that you’re covered in the event of an accident, regardless of the other driver’s insurance status, you will need to add uninsured motorist coverage to your Florida auto insurance policy. This type of coverage will protect you from the high costs of medical bills and repairs resulting from collisions with drivers who were not carrying insurance, or who had inadequate coverage for the scope of the damage. Personal Auto Insurance

Looking for affordable insurance? We know that it can be difficult to find the right insurance that fits your needs. That’s why, here at Titan, we want to help you make sure you get the right coverage that fits your needs.

Why choose Titan for an affordable vehicle insurance policy?

From the time you establish your auto insurance policy with Titan, you’ll notice a difference. With Titan, you’ll get helpful customer service, local agents and great auto insurance for as little as $1 a day.

From the minimum state required limits to full coverage, our policies are tailored to meet your unique needs and budget.

Titan’s affordable insurance coverage options include:

Liability insurance coverage covers bodily injury to others and property damage to others if you are at fault in an accident. Bodily injury pays others’ medical costs and lost wages subject to policy coverage provisions and limits. Liability coverage can also pay for your legal expenses if a lawsuit is brought against you due to an accident.

Many state laws require liability coverage. Each state has its own minimum requirement.

Collision coverage helps pay for damage to your vehicle if you hit another vehicle, another vehicle hits you, or your vehicle rolls over. Collision coverage can be a required part of your car insurance coverage if your vehicle is financed or leased.

Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage helps pay for damages to your vehicle if it is damaged in an accident by an underinsured, uninsured or unidentified driver. Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage also helps pay your medical costs and your passengers’ medical costs if an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver results in injury.

This car insurance coverage may also pay for lost wages and other damages. Auto coverage varies from state to state and is required in some states.

If you are injured in an accident, medical payment coverage can help pay for your medical expenses.

When used together, comprehensive and collision coverage are great ways to protect your vehicle. Comprehensive coverage may cover damage to your vehicle not caused by collision.

Titan also offers additional types of insurance coverage to supplement your auto policy. Designed to protect you against the unexpected, these coverage options include roadside assistance if your car breaks down, towing and labor if you’re stranded and rental reimbursement to cover the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is in the shop for accident-related repairs.

Is it possible to get affordable car insurance for high risk drivers?

If you have a less-than-perfect driving record, it can be difficult to find an insurance company that provides affordable car insurance for high risk drivers — or “non-standard” insurance.

At Titan, we understand that accidents can happen to anyone at any time. That’s why we offer affordable policies that help you get back on track.

You may be considered a high risk driver if any of the following apply:

    • You have multiple speeding tickets or traffic violations in a short period of time
    • You have more than 6 points on your driving record
    • You’ve had at-fault accidents while uninsured
    • Your record includes a DUI/DWI conviction
    • You’re a teen driver
    • You’ve had a lapse in coverage

    What is an SR-22?

If you’re considered a high risk driver and have had your driver’s license suspended, a court may require you to carry what’s known as an SR-22 in order to have your driving privileges reinstated. An SR-22 document states that you’re financially responsible and carry your state’s minimum liability insurance limits. Your SR-22 status will likely continue for at least 3 years, during which time you must maintain a high risk auto insurance policy. Otherwise, you may risk having your license suspended.

How to get affordable vehicle insurance by leveraging available discounts

You may be a high risk driver, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the discount auto insurance coverage you need. At Titan, we offer a variety of discounts to help you get affordable vehicle insurance – like maintaining an accident-free driving record, insuring multiple vehicles and more.

3 easy ways to get an affordable car insurance quote

Call your local agent or get an affordable car insurance quote online and find out how much you can save. You may qualify for a discount for even cheaper auto insurance.

    • Get affordable auto insurance online by entering your zip code at the right

Why Hire a Car for Your Vacations

Cyprus stands at the middle of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. being the third largest island in the Med. Favored by the launch of many low-cost flights to Cyprus, holidays here have become more and more popular. Prepare for crystal clear sea, rich marine life and Blue Flag beaches along the coast, mountains with forests and small villages in the centre, and plenty of shopping and historical sites all over. Here you can expect holiday resorts with all the mod-cons available, scenery with plenty of wide open spaces, scattered with tiny Cypriot villages, especially as you head up to the mountains. Hiring a car in Cyprus really is the best way to make the most of all of this.

Landing at Larnaca or Paphos Airports

Probably it’s best to book your Cyprus car hire early – with just two airports, car availability may be limited especially in the peak periods. Buses and taxis are infrequent so one of the easiest ways to get away from the airport is to rent a car. Upon landing, it’s nice to know you’ve already secured the car you want for a good price. It’s easy to pick up car hire at Paphos Airport as well as at Larnaca Airport, but you will find that away from these points car hire in Cyprus can be harder to come by and may cost more. If during your stay in Cyprus you want to be able to head out of the resort you’re staying in, hiring a car will save huge amount of time and taxi fares.

Where to Go on the Island

No need to worry when it comes to driving your hire car in Cyprus. Driving is on the left side, stay safe on the roads and follow the speed limits. The roads are pretty quiet for the most part; traffic at the resorts can get busy, but as soon as you head away from the crowd you’ll find beautiful landscape, many beaches and bays, small villages, tavernas with tradional food. Once you’ve settled in to your hotel you can start driving around. Some ideas to begin with: Nicosia, the capital, largest city of Cyprus, Paphos Archaeological Park, Ayia Napa beaches a party hotspot, Larnaca Salt Lake and the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, Kourion, an ancient Greek city near Limassol and many more.

    Why Choose Budget Cyprus

Budget is an internationally recognised brand, offering quality, reliability and value for money. Our promise is simply better value car rental; providing economy solutions with the high level of service you expect when you hire a car. We also promise: – No booking fees. Car Insurance Calculator: Determine the Cost of Insuring Your Car

If you are casually shopping around online for automotive insurance, a car insurance calculator can be a great asset to your search. The purpose of a car insurance calculator is to gather a rough estimate of what an insurance plan is going to cost you. Obviously, prices may change with different insurance companies, but you will be able to get a rough estimate.

    Get Free Car Insurance Quotes

You can easily find a coverage calculator online, which can help you decide on the minimum requirements of being insured, or a more comprehensive plan. One useful calculator can be found at carinsurance.com. You will be asked a series of basic questions, including marital status, children and whether or not you rent or own a home. It gathers more personal information, such as education obtained, age and if you have health insurance. Obviously, you will be asked to fill out information about the car that you are trying to insure as well.

    Need Car Insurance? ZIP

The whole process doesn’t take much more than ten minutes, and can save you time in the long run. When you obtain a free quote from individual insurance companies, you are essentially using a car insurance calculator. Some of the questions may be slightly different and you will probably be asked to create a profile with your email address. Also, you often have to input personal identification information, such as your social security number and address. If you are skittish about giving out your personal contact information, or like to do so as little as possible, it’s probably a better idea to use a car insurance calculator on an independent website.

Calculating Premiums without a Car Insurance Premium Calculator

If you are unable to make use of a premium calculator but still need to keep within a budget, it is useful to know what aspects you need to take into account to calculate the premium.

    1. Previous Premiums. When you do not have use of a car insurance premium calculator, the ideal starting point is the figures for previous premiums. This will be the basis from which you can calculate what adjustments are likely to be made. If you do not have any figures for previous premiums, use an online quote form and input approximate details to obtain a quote figure.
    2. Claims. Be aware that any claim that you make will put you more at risk of getting high risk car insurance rates at renewal. Accordingly, take into account the number and types of claims that you have been paid over the course of the previous year as part of the car insurance premium calculator. The higher the payouts, the higher the renewal premium is likely to be. However, even a single claim is likely to increase the premium by a small amount.
    3. Market Conditions. A car insurance premium calculator must take into account market conditions. Pay attention to the financial news for any stories about the insurance industry and well as crime figures. Low car insurance rates will be scarce if insurers have paid out significant sums due to an increase in car crime.

Dealer Cost Calculator – Find out what the dealer really paid.

    Did you know:

    • That the dealer invoice price isn’t what the dealer really paid for the vehicle? It is often much lower!
    • The dealer receives rebates, incentives, and other discounts from the manufacturer. These discounts are applied directly to the dealer invoice price!
    • Knowing the actual cost gives you a huge buying advantage over other shoppers. By starting your negotiations from the cost up, you can often save thousands more over shoppers that work from MSRP down. See ” How to buy new cars below dealer invoice prices “

    Calculator definitions:

Base Vehicle MSRP: The MSRP of the vehicle before you add any options, packages or additional manufacturer items.

Base Invoice Price: The invoice price the dealer receives from the manufacturer before adding on any options, packages or additional manufacturer items.

Total MSRP of all Options: The MSRP of all the vehicle options added up.

Total Invoice of all Options: The invoice price of all the options added up.

Destination Fee: The cost to have the vehicle transported to the dealer from the manufacturer. (Also called freight.)

Note: You can find MSRP, Invoice pries and destination fees at Edmunds.com .

    Formula for calculating dealer cost:

    • Example: Base Invoice + Options + Destination – Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
    • What is holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price. (See calculations below.)

Total Dealer Cost (above) + Taxes / Licensing Fees – Rebate / Incentive = True Cost (Total Dealer Cost (calculated above) + Taxes / Licensing Fees – Rebate / Incentive = True Cost (You can get rebates, incentives invoice options pricing at Edmunds. )

The steps To Determine Dealer Cost On A New Car Or Truck

There are three easy steps to determining dealer cost on a new car or truck. Although these steps are relatively cut-and-dry, you can’t arrive at an authentic number without having a basic understanding of each step and everything that it entails. In the following tutorial, we will show you how to calculate dealer cost while taking various circumstances into account. When you’re through reading the tutorial, you will have a firm grasp on concepts like factory invoicing, dealer hold back and how rebates affect the end result of your calculations. In learning all of these things, you will become a much savvier car shopper.

Step One: Obtain The Dealer Or Factory Invoice Price

Depending on the make and model of the vehicle that you’re researching, you should be able to use a number of different sites to find its current dealer invoice price. Websites like Edmunds.com, InvoiceDealers.com and Yahoo! Autos all offer these prices. However, it is important to make sure that the site you use to get your dealer invoice price takes all of the following points into consideration:

Base Invoice – This would be the price of the car without any options at all.

Options Invoice – The invoice that the manufacturer receives for any number of different possible options.

Destination Fees – Costs are incurred when transporting a new car from the manufacturer to the dealer; those charges will be listed as “destination fees.”

Manufacturer Fees – These fees refer to the miscellaneous things the manufacturer is going to charge the dealer, and often include advertising and marketing costs along with regional ad fees.

If the dealer or factory invoice price that you’re given doesn’t take all of the preceding information into account, then you’re not going to arrive at the true dealer cost; move on to a different site that does take these things into consideration.

Step Two: Calculate The Hold Back Or Hidden Profit

The complicated series of payments that most manufacturers make to most dealers in order to give them the incentive to stock certain vehicles is known as dealer hold back. Without it, dealers would be much more reticent to give buyers as many deals as they do; after all, the dealer has to make something on the deal, too. Negotiating around the hold back is theoretically possible but not very easy to do. Still, being aware of the hold back amount can help you be a more strategic automobile shopper.

Usually, the hold back is based on either a percentage of a vehicle’s MSRP or invoice price. It is rolled into the price that the dealer pays for a new vehicle and is typically about two or three percent. However, it is paid back to the dealer at a later time. In other words, dealer cost is inflated because of hold back; knowing what the hold back amount is for any given make and model can help you arrive at actual dealer cost more efficiently.

    Step Three: Calculate Dealer Cost

In order to get a basic idea about the dealer cost for any given model, simply subtract the hold back from the invoice price. Still, there’s another thing that you need to keep in mind: rebates. These fall into two categories, manufacturer-to-customer programs and manufacturer-to-dealer programs, and must be subtracted from the difference between the invoice price and any hold backs in order to arrive at actual dealer cost.

Manufacturer-To-Customer Programs include things like special leases, cash rebates and low interest financing. These deals can cut into the profit that a dealer makes – and also reduce the dealer’s overall cost.

Manufacturer-To-Dealer Programs revolve around marketing support money, or funds that are used to help advertise and promote dealer inventory. They are often referred to as dealer cash incentives, and may or may not be passed along to the customer. In either case, they need to be subtracted from the dealer’s cost.

Upon subtracting any rebates or incentives, you should have arrived at the most accurate calculation of dealer cost possible. Armed with this information, you can get a better idea of whether you’re receiving a good deal or not on that shiny new car.

Holdback Calculations: ( See the dealer cost guide for more information.)

    • If a % of “Total” MSRP or Invoice make sure you add all the manufacturers options to the price when calculating holdback
    • If a % of “Base” MSRP or Invoice, calculate hold back on the Base price before you add the options.

Websites give free cost estimates for car repairs

By Gitte Laasby of the Journal Sentinel

    Updated Nov. 14, 2013

Consumers who need a car repair but are worried about getting ripped off by a mechanic can get free guidance online.

RepairPal gives free estimates of how much it will cost to get a specific problem with a specific vehicle fixed at a mechanic where you live. The calculator lets you pick a make, model and vehicle year and a zip code.

The website will respond with a price range for the repair. The site features everything from maintenance services, such as oil changes and transmission fluid changes, to problems with the engine, brakes, suspension and steering, exhaust and emissions, electrical and lights, heating and air conditioning. It also lists how much a diagnosis will run you.

The site will also make notes about potential repair costs, such as warnings if other parts may need to be replaced as part of the repair.

RepairPal uses information from technicians and analysts who spent 75,000 hours analyzing the cost of labor and parts for various repairs in zip codes. The system also relies on proprietary data not previously available to consumers, according to the site.

The site was founded in 2007 by a group of car enthusiasts and entrepreneurs who were frustrated by the expensive and tedious process of fixing and maintaining their vehicles.

They created RepairPal to provide deivers with the most accurate, unbiased and useful car ownership information available, the website states. Unlike any other online resource, RepairPal provides impartial, fair price estimates, the most comprehensive auto shop directory, and expert insights and advice from certified mechanics.

RepairPal is not owned by any car manufacturer, dealership or auto repair facility, but it does partner with such entities as Consumer Reports, U.S. News Automotive, AOL Autos, AARP, Cars.com, CarQuest Auto Parts, the Bosch Service Network and the Automotive Service Association.

Some other car repair estimators online: Napa and AOL Autos license RepairPal’s data, so they produce the same results, according to MSN Money. AutoMD will also compare dealer prices with independent repair shop prices and do-it-yourself costs. Other resources, including Consumer Reports, will give you estimates, too, but you need to be a subscriber.

Have any good tips for how your fellow readers can make sure they get a reasonable price on their car repairs? Feel free to share by commenting below.

How much will it cost to paint my car?

I have a 2001 Honda Accord EX that is a hideous "rental car" tan color. I hate it and wish to get it painted another color. How much do you guys think it will cost me? I know there is a big range on these types of things, I am looking to spend under $1,000.

There’s no way you will get a decent paint job on a car when you are changing the colour for under $1000. It’ll look like crap and, when the next prospective buyer opens the bonnets and the like, will assume it is of dodgy origin.

Full changes of colour require a lot of disassembly and reassembly to make sure all the shut lines and internal areas (inside boot edges, door closures and the like) match and this sort of labour is not cheap.

You may find some back street shop somewhere that will say they can do it. But I’d almost guarantee you’ll be disappointed with the results or lose money on eventual resale because of it. You’d be better off (if you hate the colour so much) to consider $1000 as the budget for changing the car (ie resale cost versus change of ownership cost + new car).

posted by Brockles at 4:53 PM on December 16, 2010

Crappy link. but the information is true. MAACO will cost under $500 for the lowest quality paint and no repair work. Some of the time dents need to be filled in, which will kick it up towards that $1k mark. If you skip on the repairs for dents, etc. expect to have bubbling or chipping in a few years’ time.

A quality custom paint job where they do the full disassembly/reassembly to make it "showroom quality" will push $4-5k. Anything else can be found somewhere in between.

Check for quality of work on other vehicles from the shop before you commit. MAACO’s in particular are known to vary greatly from shop to shop.

Sell your car and with the $1000 buy a car the color you like.

Anecdotally, I paid $2000 flat at a MAACO auto paint shop in Boston a couple years back for a complete "showroom quality" repaint on my Integra, including all doorjambs and other interior bits except the underside of the hood. They wanted $2400 initially but I talked them down. This amount also covered quite a few small dent repairs before they applied the new paint job.

posted by killdevil at 5:26 PM on December 16, 2010

Thanks all, thats kind of what I figured, the car is probably only worth around 4-5k so going nuts would just be irresponsible. (The color isn’t that bad, and I wouldn’t sell it because I do love the car.) I appreciate the advice though!

posted by arveale at 5:42 PM on December 16, 2010

Weird – I actually checked your profile because I have a music student, a teenage kid, who asked me about the same question about a very similar car he’s about to "inherit," except his ’01 Accord will be silver instead.

Yeah, it’s not going to be worth it. Even repainting to the same color will cost minimum $2-3K, and will raise the value of the car $500 TOPS. Save your money and buy a car you like better down the road.

A very good, minimal to no flaw (orange peel, etc) paint job from a reputable shop can be had for roughly $1500. This would include masking trim, windows, and the like. The proper way to have a car painted to get a "showroom" level job is to have all trim removed, and all glass. You’ve just doubled the price, and then some, depending on paint. Pearlescents and other exotic, multi stage colors can get rather pricey.

Going back some 15 years I did a frame-off restoration of a 1967 Alfa Romeo Boat tail spider (The car Dustin Hoffman drove in the Graduate). The final part of the resto was a trip to a well known higher end paint shop. I spent about $6000 on the paint work, but this was for a numbers matching, "looks like it did on the showroom floor in 1967" restoration. When I sold the car about 8 years later I got about double what I invested in it.

But that was an Alfa Romeo. Any mid 80’s back Alfa Romeo that isn’t a rust bucket can arguably be a nice investment as a collector’s item.

A 2001 Honda Accord, like 98% of cars ever made, is an expense, never an investment. You get anything other than a $300 Maaco paint job on a car like that, you do it for the love. Sure, it’s an illogical decision to spend a lot of money on a car like that, but then again, love often bumps heads with logic. But here’s the question; If you do love this car, why wouldn’t you want to get a paint job done right, that looks great from day one, and for years to come?

You can’t get that paint job for what you want to spend.

If you don’t love this car, and you absolutely hate the color but can’t afford buying another car, spend $300 at Maaco. But never look at the paint up close, and be ready to either sell it or get a repaint in a few years. Because a cheap paint job only ever looks passable, and won’t even stay looking like that for long. Good luck!

    What is public liability insurance?

If you are running a business, public liability insurance protects you if a member of the public suffers an injury or if any of their property is damaged because of your business. It will cover legal costs and any compensation claims if your business is found to be at fault.

What does public liability insurance cover?

For injuries to a third party or damage to their property, whether an incident takes place on your business premises, a customer’s premises or elsewhere.

Should a claim be made against you, cover will be provided to help you cover the cost of any legal proceedings.

The cost of repairing damage (for example, to a client’s carpets if you are a plumber and do something in the course of your work which causes a flood).

The cost of hospital treatment (including the cost of calling out an ambulance), if the NHS chooses to claim against you.

Read our public liability FAQs page for information on what’s not covered.

Public liability insurance will not cover:

    • Accidents that happen to you.
    • Damage to your own property or accidents that affect your employees or their possessions.
    • Incidents like these should be covered under your generalbusiness insurancepolicy and / or your employers’ liability insurance policy, which is a legal requirement.

What else do I need to know about public liability insurance?

First and foremost, it’s important to note that the complete cost of any claim you need to make under public liability cover is unlikely to be met by your insurer. You are likely to have to pay an excess at a level agreed when you first set up your policy – for example, the first £250 or £500 of any claim.

As a general rule of thumb, if you opt for a higher excess the price of your public liability insurance premium may come down – but it’s important to be sure you could genuinely afford to pay the excess in the event of a crisis.

How can I compare public liability insurance deals?

As with any form of insurance, it’s important to compare a variety of public liability insurance policies from different providers before buying. Check the levels of protection on offer as well as the annual premiums, and consider carefully where you should set your excess.

    What Does Medicare Cost?

Medicare is a health insurance program for people 65 and older. People younger than 65 who are disabled or who have end-stage kidney disease or ALS can also get health care through Medicare.

What you pay for Medicare depends on how much you earn each year and how much care you need. You pay a separate amount for each part of Medicare.

    Medicare Part A

Part A is your hospital coverage.

Premium costs. If you or your spouse worked for at least 10 years and paid Medicare taxes, you won’t pay any monthly fee, called a premium, for Part A. Most people don’t pay a premium.

If you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for less than 10 years total, you will have to pay a monthly fee for Part A coverage. The premium could be as much as $407 a month.

Deductible costs. If you stay overnight in the hospital or use other Part A services, you’ll pay a deductible. The deductible is the amount you must pay before Medicare pays anything for your care.

For 2017, the deductible for each hospital stay is $1,316.

Copay costs. You also pay copays for Part A. It’s a set amount you pay for specific types of care. If you’re in the hospital for more than 60 days, your copay is $329 a day for days 61 to 90. After that, your copay is $658 a day.

    Medicare Part B

Part B is for your doctor visits, tests, and other services.

Premium costs: Each month you pay a premium of $134. If your income is higher than $85,000, you have to pay a higher premium. How much you make determines how much you pay, ranging from $187.50 to $428.60.

Deductible costs: You also pay a $183 deductible each year. After you pay it, you pay coinsurance, which is 20% of your medical costs.

Penalties: If you don’t sign up for Part B when you first become eligible, you may have to pay a penalty if you did not have health insurance through an employer or union. The penalty is an additional 10% of the Part B premium for each 12-month period you did not enroll.

    Continued

    Medicare Part D

Premium costs. The monthly fee you pay varies by the plan you choose. The average premium for 2017 is $34. If you have a higher income, you may pay more each month. If your income is over $85,000 you will pay your plan premium plus an additional fee, ranging from $13.30 to $76.20, depending on your income.

Deductible costs: Each year you pay a deductible before Medicare starts sharing the cost for your medicines. Although the deductible may vary from plan to plan, no plan may charge more than $400 in 2017.

After you’ve paid the deductible, your Medicare prescription drug plan kicks in and you pay a copay or coinsurance.

Out-of-pocket costs: The part you pay for your medicines is either called a copay or coinsurance. The amount depends on the plan you’ve chosen. You may pay more for some drugs than others, such as brand-name drugs.

Costs in the donut hole: If you and your drug plan spend a certain amount on medicines, you’ll have a gap in your drug coverage, which is often called the donut hole. In 2017, once you and your drug plan have spent $3,700 on covered drugs, you are in the donut hole.

While in the donut hole, in 2017 you will pay 40% of the cost for a brand-name medicine. This will steadily decrease until it reaches 25% in 2020. Although you only pay 40% of the cost of a brand-name drug, 90% of the cost is added to the maximum spending limit. That’s a bonus because you only pay a discounted price for a brand-name drug, but you get “credit” for a larger amount. That means you’ll reach the maximum more quickly, when Medicare will start sharing the costs with you again.

For generic drugs, you pay 51% of the cost in 2017. This will steadily decrease to 25% in 2020. Unlike brand-name drugs, only the amount you pay counts towards getting you out of the coverage gap.

You’ll Pay This Percentage for Brand-Name Drugs
    in the Donut Hole

You’ll Pay this Percentage for Generic Drugs
    in the Donut Hole

    Continued

Costs after the donut hole: Once you’ve spent $4,950 in out-of-pocket costs in 2017, you are out of the coverage gap. When Medicare starts paying again, it’s called catastrophic coverage. Then, you only have to pay a small copay or coinsurance toward your prescription drug costs for the rest of the year. In 2017, for generic medicines, you’ll pay 5% of the drug’s cost or $3.30, whichever is higher. For brand-name drugs, you’ll pay 5% of the drug’s cost or $8.25, whichever is higher.

    Medicare Advantage (Part C)

These are health plans sold by insurance companies but overseen by Medicare. They are alternatives to original Medicare, and usually offer more services than original Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans typically cover hospitalization (Part A), outpatient care (Part B), and prescription drugs (Part D) under one plan.

To qualify for Medicare Advantage, you need to have Medicare Parts A and B. So that means you’ll at least need to pay the Part B monthly premium.

On top of that fee, you may need to pay a monthly premium for the Medicare Advantage plan itself. The prices vary a great deal depending on the plan you’ve chosen and where you live.

    Medigap

This is supplemental health insurance provided by private insurance companies that covers some of the costs Medicare does n’t, including copays and deductibles. You don’t need, nor can you buy, a Medicare Advantage Plan if you carry a Medigap policy.

To join a private Medigap plan, you pay a monthly fee to an insurance company in addition to the premium you pay to the government for Medicare Part B .

The costs of Medigap plans vary a lot, depending on the coverage, the company, your location, and your age. So make sure to shop around before buying one. If you wish to buy a Medigap policy, you should do so when you first become eligible for Medicare. Outside of the six month open enrollment period, which starts the month you turn 65, you’re not guaranteed to qualify for a policy.

Medigap options can vary from state to state. Be sure to find out what is offered in your state. You can get help from your State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Call 800-MEDICARE to find yours.

What is AWS Billing and Cost Management?

AWS Billing and Cost Management is the service that you use to pay your AWS bill, monitor your usage, and budget your costs.

The service automatically charges the credit card you provided when you signed up for a new account with AWS. Charges appear on your credit card bill monthly. You can view or update credit card information, and designate a different credit card for AWS to charge, on the Payment Methods page in the Billing and Cost Management console. For more information about accessing the console, see Opening the Billing and Cost Management Console and Dashboard.

If you chose India as your contact address country when you signed up, you might be an Amazon Internet Services Pvt. Ltd (AISPL) customer, and you might need to approve the charges before your credit card can be billed. For more information about paying as an AISPL customer, see Pay your AISPL bill.

Features in Billing and Cost Management

The Billing and Cost Management service provides features that you can use to estimate and plan your AWS costs, receive alerts if your costs exceed a threshold that you set, assess your biggest investments in AWS resources, and, if you work with multiple AWS accounts, simplify your accounting.

    Analyzing Costs with Graphs

The AWS Billing and Cost Management console includes the no-cost Cost Explorer tool for viewing your AWS cost data as a graph. With Cost Explorer, you can filter graphs by API operation, Availability Zone, AWS service, custom cost allocation tag, Amazon EC2 instance type, purchase option, region, usage type, usage type group, or, if you use consolidated billing, by member account. You can also see a forecast of future costs based on your historical cost data. For more information, see Customizing Your Cost Explorer Cost Analysis.

You can use budgets to track your AWS costs. Budgets use the cost visualization provided by Cost Explorer to show you the status of your budgets and to provide forecasts of your estimated costs. You can also use budgets to create CloudWatch alarms that notify you when you go over your budgeted amounts, or when your estimated costs exceed your budgets.

If you are using consolidated billing, only the master account can create and manage budgets. Individual member accounts cannot create or manage budgets. You can grant linked accounts read-only access to your budgets using an IAM policy. For more information, see Controlling Access.

    Alerts on Cost Limits

You can use Amazon CloudWatch to create billing alerts when your AWS costs exceed specified thresholds. For more information, see Monitoring Charges with Alerts and Notifications.

When you set a payment currency, you can view your estimated bills and pay your AWS invoices in your preferred currency.

The currency conversion happens after your bill is finalized. Until then, all preferred currency amounts shown in the console are estimated in USD. AWS guarantees your exchange rate, so that refunds use the same exchange rate as your original transaction.

AWS Marketplace and DevPay invoices are not eligible for this service and are processed in USD.

This service is available only if your default payment method is Visa or MasterCard.

The rates change daily. The rate applied to your invoice is the current rate when your invoice is created. You can check the current rate on the Billing and Cost Management console.

You can switch back to USD.

Currency conversion is provided by Amazon Services LLC.

    AWS Cost and Usage reports

You can choose to have AWS publish billing reports to an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) bucket that you own. You can receive reports that break down your costs by the hour or month, by product or product resource, or by tags that you define yourself. AWS updates the report in your bucket once a day in comma-separated value (CSV) format. You can view the reports using spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel or Apache OpenOffice Calc, or access them from an application using the Amazon S3 API.

If you use the consolidated billing feature in AWS Organizations, the Amazon S3 bucket that you designate to receive the billing reports must be owned by the master account in your organization. You can’t receive billing reports in a bucket that is owned by a member account. If you use consolidated billing, you can also have your costs broken down by member account. For more information, see Grouping Data By Filter Type.

For more information about each of these reports and how to configure them, see Understanding Your Usage with Billing Reports.

Are You a First-Time Billing User?

If you’re new to the AWS Billing and Cost Management service, we recommend that you begin with the Getting Started section, which shows you how to use the Billing and Cost Management console.

If you’re new to AWS, we recommend that you review Getting Started with AWS. This guide has useful general information about using AWS and managing your account.

    Related Services

The Billing and Cost Management service is tightly integrated with the AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) service. You can use IAM with Billing and Cost Management to ensure that other people who work in your account have only as much access as they need to get their job done.

For more information about how to allow or deny access to your billing information, see Controlling Access.

The IAM service is also how you control access to all of your AWS resources, not just your billing information, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the basic concepts and best practices of IAM before you get too far along with setting up the structure of your AWS account.

For details about how to work with IAM and why it’s important to do so, see IAM Concepts and IAM Best Practices in the IAM User Guide.

    AWS Organizations (Consolidated Billing)

The AWS platform is designed to accommodate every size of company, from small startups to enterprises. If your company is large, or likely to grow, you might want to set up multiple AWS accounts that reflect your company’s structure. For example, you can have one account for the entire company and accounts for each employee, you can have an account for the entire company with IAM users for each employee, or you can have an account for the entire company, accounts for each department or team within the company, and accounts for each employee.

If you set up multiple AWS accounts, you can choose to have each account receive a bill (that is, function as a payer account), or you can use the consolidated billing feature of AWS Organizations to consolidate multiple member accounts under your master account. Consolidated billing is designed to simplify your accounting and let you take advantage of lower-priced usage tiers for many services. For more information, see Consolidated Billing for Organizations.

    About

We understand consumers often need the lowest price possible when it comes to choosing an auto insurance company. Our customers also want the right amount of coverage to keep their family safe and protected from life s unfortunate accidents.

At Cheap Car Insurance. we believe in having the best of both worlds — low rates, excellent coverage and local reps who are there every step of the way. This is what sets Cheap Car Insurance apart from our competition. And that’s what makes us the obvious choice when it comes to your car insurance needs.

    Why We Exist

    Extreme Savings

Our emphasis on red tape removal and streamlining translates to serious savings for our customers. In a world where corporate bloat is the inevitable outcome of mega-sized insurance companies, we focus on the exact opposite: making things easier and faster. When other companies are saying, How can we add another step to make things better? we are asking ourselves, How can we remove a step to make things better?

We also do not spend billions on advertising like some companies in attempts to attract every customer in the world because we prefer to pass those savings on to you and rely more heavily on our customers telling their friends about us. That s how good products should be sold.

    Un-Corporate-Like Transparency

While other companies make empty promises about savings, we actually let our customers report them publicly for the world to see. Check out our Recent Savings chart to the left to view their unfiltered comments. True, not everyone saves money here, but most do.

We focus on improving the conversation with our customers, which has resulted in one of the highest satisfaction rating in the industry.

We believe in providing exceptional customer service and we hope that your time on our site is always a first class experience. Our support work is never outsourced to other countries. We also only hire experienced reps who help us respond faster than most insurance companies.

Furthermore, we know our customers want the right amount of coverage to help keep their family safe on the road. That’s why we emphasize on red tape removal and streamline processes to help find cheap full coverage car insurance rates and the cheapest insurance companies for our customers.

One Good Reason to Shop With Us

“After being with my insurance company for just shy of 10 years, and after having shopped at companies that everyone around my hometown swore were the cheapest (including unadvertised “bargain” companies and giant comparison shopping brands), I decided to shop here at CheapCarInsurance and ended up saving just under $1,100 off my annual insurance bill, which is a lot more than I ever could have imagined anyone saving, especially me, an avid online shopper and extreme bargain hunter [. ]

This is pretty ridiculous considering the fact that: 1st, I had regularly asked my former insurance company for reviews and discounts; 2nd, I recently got a speeding ticket in a school zone (which I am a bit ashamed to say) just before I switched; and 3rd, that $1,100 savings was before I got an additional discount for bundling my home insurance on my policy (which is a lot lower now too).

Unfortunately, and surprisingly, 10 years of loyalty did not pay off for me, and was replaced by a 5 minute quote that will save me thousands down the road. In short, our family owns 3 cars, and my new rates are about half my old rates; so not bad for the little additional time it took to compare quotes and digitally sign a policy.

Obviously, not everyone will save nearly as much as I did, but it’s well worth your 5 minutes to find out, even if you end up only saving a few hundred dollars per year, potentially adding up to thousands over a couple years.”

Whether you need a free car insurance quote or are just shopping around, by filling out our easy-to-use form, we’ll find the best and cheapest full coverage car insurance options tailored to your insurance needs. At Cheap Car Insurance, we are the simplest and safest way to save money on your car insurance!

    Solar Power

We compare prices from every energy supplier in England, Scotland and Wales to help lower your fuel bills

How much money does it cost to install solar panels

    Solar Power

Solar panels can cut your energy bills, and pay you for producing electricity, which makes them an appealing option if your energy costs are going up. But before paying thousands to install solar panels, consider whether your property is suitable, and whether they’ll really cut your bills.

How much money does it cost to install solar panels

    How solar panels work

Solar panels harness the sun’s energy through photovoltaic cells. The cells convert sunlight into electricity. You don’t need direct sunlight for the panels to work, as they still generate some power on an overcast day.

    • Cut your carbon footprint – the panels are environmentally friendly, as solar electricity doesn’t release harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants into the atmosphere.
    • Renewable and sustainable – you can’t run out of this type of power.
    • Cut energy costs – sunlight doesn’t cost a penny, once you’ve paid for the panels to be installed.
    • Financial support – solar panels are eligible for Feed-in Tariffs. You earn money for each kWh of electricity you generate, and you get an additional payment for the electricity you export back into the grid.
    • The initial cost – this can be expensive, at thousands of pounds, unless you’re eligible for financial help towards the cost.
    • Dependent on weather – solar panels still produce power on a cloudy day, but the weather may influence how well they work.
    • Your property might not be suitable – you need a roof that’s big enough to fit the panels, and produce enough power. Ideally, your home should also be south-facing. Listed buildings are unlikely to be allowed to install solar panels.
    • Effort – there is a big initial outlay, and building work is required. This will put many people off, when energy is available simply from a range of suppliers.

Call your local Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre on 0800 512 012 for more information on solar panels.

    The cost of solar panels

The average 4kWp solar panel system costs around 5,000- 8,000 to install, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

This can generate around 3,800 kWh of electricity a year, and save around two tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. However, costs vary widely between installers – so get several quotes.

Before spending thousands installing a system, make sure it’s worthwhile. Check if other energy saving measures could save more, such as switching suppliers, loft or wall insulation.

Your home must reach band D or higher in the Energy Performance Certificate to be eligible for the highest rate of Feed-in Tariff.

If you’re unable to install solar panels or you decide against it, cut energy costs by comparing tariffs and switching to a cheaper deal. Make sure you’re on the most competitive tariff, particularly given the rising cost of energy.

    Fitting solar panels

Tell your buildings insurer: The panels will form part of your home’s structure. This means your insurance could get more expensive, if your insurer decides you need a higher level of cover, particularly if the house needs rebuilding and the panels need replacing.

Consider separate insurance: Your home insurance won’t guard against any mechanical fault in the panels. If they stop working, check if they’re under warranty. You may need to insure them separately.

Check the provider: Look out for the REAL Assurance and Microgeneration Certification Schemes (MCS), ensuring you can trust the company. The MCS mark shows that the installer offers high-quality products, while the REAL Assurance Scheme is a consumer code that offers protection.

  • Living Wage Calculator #low #cost #term #life

    #

In many American communities, families working in low-wage jobs make insufficient income to live locally given the local cost of living.

Recently, in a number of high-cost communities, community organizers and citizens have successfully argued that the prevailing wage offered by the public sector and key businesses should reflect a wage rate required to meet minimum standards of living.

Therefore we have developed a living wage calculator to estimate the cost of living in your community or region. The calculator lists typical expenses, the living wage and typical wages for the selected location.

Written by Dr. Amy K. Glasmeier on 06/14/2017

Living wages include several cost factors; the two most important are housing and child care expenses. The Living Wage Calculator uses the county level Fair Market Rent (FMR) rate produced by the Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of its calculus. Using the same indicator (FMR), new research by The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) reinforces the findings of the living wage tool: the cost of living in the overwhelming majority of the nation s counties exceeds significantly a full-time income earned based on the minimum wage (http://nlihc.org/oor ). As the NLIHC research shows, rent alone for a two bedroom apartment requires a wage rate that is more than $21.00 an hour. As the study indicates, this level of income is 2.9 times higher than the minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Our computation of the living wage parallels these findings adding weight to the underlying fact; it is almost impossible to make it in America today based on incomes earned at the.

Written by Dr. Amy K. Glasmeier and Carey Anne Nadeau, OpenDataNation.com on 04/13/2017

Establishing a living wage, an approximate income needed to meet a family’s basic needs, would enables the working poor to achieve financial independence while maintaining housing and food security. When coupled with lowered expenses, for childcare and housing in particular, the living wage might also free up resources for savings, investment, and/or for the purchase of capital assets (e.g. provisions for retirement or home purchases) that build wealth and ensure long-term financial security.

The 2016 analysis of the living wage, compiling geographically specific expenditure data for food, childcare, health care, housing, transportation, and other basic necessities, finds that:
The living wage in the United States is $15.84 per hour, before taxes for a family of four (two working adults, two children), compared to $15.12 in 2015.

The minimum wage does not provide a living wage for most American families. A typical family of four (two working adults, two children) needs to.

Written by Dr. Amy K. Glasmeier on 03/24/2017

The data behind the Living Wage Calculator has received another update. It is now current as of February 7th, 2017.

You can read about the latest findings and analysis in this document .

    Contractors General Liability Insurance Prices

No matter how careful you are, accidents happen. Plan for the unexpected by protecting yourself with a general liability insurance policy. For a relatively small annual premium, general liability insurance protects your assets if you are sued for personal injury or property damage. A general liability policy covers the cost of damages or settlement fees as well as attorney fees.

General liability insurance is particularly important for contractors. Any company that works with heavy or dangerous equipment has a greater risk of injury. And even small mistakes can turn into costly lawsuits.

Contractors’ General Liability Insurance Average Costs

Contractors pay more for general liability insurance than many other types of businesses due to the risky nature of the work. (Faulty plumbing or electrical work could lead to damages or a child could wander onto the construction site and be injured). However, general liability insurance is still affordable.

Most contractors pay from $700 to $1,200 per year for general liability insurance. The payments are usually structured as a down payment of several hundred dollars and monthly payments spread out over nine or ten months.

Several factors will influence your rate. The size of the policy is one of the biggest factors – the most common policies offer $500,000, $1 million or $2 million worth of coverage. The more coverage you need, the more expensive the premium will be. Rates also vary from state to state, because courts in some states are known for awarding higher damages in personal injury and property damages cases. An insurance company will also look at your company’s track record in determining a rate. If you’ve had accidents or faced lawsuits in the past, expect to pay more.

    How General Liability Insurance Works

General liability insurance is not a luxury for construction firms, plumbers, electricians and the like. Many times, contractors are required to show proof of insurance before beginning work on a job site. Some customers will ask to see proof before allowing you to work on their home.

If you’re sued, general liability insurance will cover the cost of your damages or settlement fees and attorney fees up to the policy maximum. So, if you buy a $1 million policy and the settlement is $1.5 million, you’ll be on the hook for the remaining $500,000. If you’re concerned about that happening, you might want to purchase a separate umbrella policy to cover the remainder.

How Much Does a Car Rental Cost?

    Range: $20-$50/day

    Typical costs:

    • Car rental costs vary by location, duration of rental, type of car and season. To get an initial estimate of costs, try checking on an online travel website such as Orbitz[1 ] .
    • According to a 2003 study by Consumer Web Watch, Orbitz.com often had the lowest car rental rates, followed by Travelocity, Expedia, Dollar and Alamo.
    • Tip: Consider joining frequent rental programs, such as Dollar Express or the Hertz #1 Club, which are often free. These clubs often let you bypass the long lines and either go directly from the shuttle to your car, or go to an express line.

    Additional costs:

    • Often, there are additional charges for drivers under 25 years of age, and some rental companies do not rent to younger drivers at all.
    • There are additional fees for gas (if you do not return the car with a full tank), or car insurance (if your credit card company and auto insurance company do not cover you).
    • Taxes and additional fees can be hefty. Some airports have additional car rental taxes on top of normal sales tax.
    • Additional drivers may or may not cost extra, depending on the car company. Spouses typically do not cost more.

    Discounts:

    • If you’re willing to spend some extra time, you can often save money by taking a shuttle to a rental company that is located outside of the airport. This can save you from additional airport convenience fees and also typically give lower rates. An example of an airport with in-terminal and off-site rental agencies is the Honolulu International Airport.
    • Tip: Talk to your car insurance company and credit card company before you travel to determine whether car rentals are already covered. If so, you should be able to decline the costly insurance fees.
    • Tip: Shop different online travel sites such as Expedia and Travelocity, but then also compare rates directly with the rental companies. Rental companies often have a “Special Offers” section with various promotions and discounts, such as AAA discounts or “Hot Deals” that may not be listed on the travel sites.
    • Tip: You can also use search engines, such as Google, to search for money saving promotion or coupon codes. For example, if you are considering using Hertz, try searching for “Hertz promo code”.

I got a great deal on Priceline, which came out to $29/day with taxes and fees included. I saved money by picking up my car in a location other than the airport. Once I found out Avis would offer me the best deal on Priceline, I also Googled Avis coupon codes and found an additional code to put in, which got me the reduced rate of $145 for 5 full days.

I recently shopped for a full-size rental car in Seattle for early August. I had been wanting to try Priceline, but I always felt unsure because I didn’t know how much to bid and I worried I’d be paying too much. started my bidding for a full-size car at $17 a day, which Priceline said was very unlikely to work, so I tried $18 a day. That bid failed, but they let me immediately rebid (normally you have to wait 24-72 hours after an unsuccessful bid). I bid $20 a day and got a full-size car from Avis. The taxes and fees (amazingly) are another $67, so the total was $167 for a 5 day rental, averaging just $33 a day with all taxes.

San Diego solar panels and DIY installation kits. Blue Pacific Solar is an American based company for panels sold at wholesale prices typically used for grid-tie and off-grid systems. Our company takes on the challenge of helping homeowners and independent minded people create their own energy. The products you see here are not just manufactures sales pitches but seasoned systems designed by experienced solar people who have spent years field-testing equipment. We can provide all the equipment, panels and drawings necessary for both stand-alone and grid-connected installations as well as expert technical advice.

Endless home electricity from the Sun. Use your San Diego property to generate cash
    • Expandable, scalable, silent, affordable electricity. Solar kits that are easy to install and adapt to a wide range of homes.
    • Fast DIY installation. Time tested reliability. Panels are guaranteed to produce electricity for 25 years.
    • Maintenance free convenience. DIY solar on your San Diego home is simple equipment with no moving parts.
    • Homeowner installation friendly. AC power that will reduce your home electrical costs.

    • Your home solar generator qualifies for cash incentives in many states as well as federal tax credits.
    • Have the satisfaction of knowing you’re part of the sustainability solution. You will be the envy of the neighborhood.

DIY solar panel kits are a cost effective way to reduce your installation costs by about 50% over installation companies. Most San Diego home owners who can do simple do-it-yourself projects around the house will find it possible to install their own systems or act as their own solar contractor with Blue Pacific Solar comprehensive technical support. By installing your own solar panels kits you reduce your costs and increase your rate-of-return investment on your system. Solar panel kits for residential and commercial owners serve three main advantages in grid-tied and off-grid systems. The first for homeowners is to reduce their cost. For the residential or commercial property owner there are large savings ahead from the monthly dread of your utility bill. The second advantage of home solar panels kits would be your hedge against inflation. Utility bills across America are on the rise and will only go higher. The third is pride of ownership while helping to conserve energy in America with less dependence on fossil fuels.

San Diego Solar DIY Panels, Take Power Over Your Own Installation and Save Money.

Money into your pocket now. The savings are immediate and last a lifetime. Satisfaction you are no longer a victim of rising energy costs. Pride that your family is part of the sustainability solution. San Diego home solar panels help the environment. Installation designed for the average DIY homeowner. Thinking of your family’s future. Reduce America’s dependence on fossil fuel. Put the power of the sun to work for you. The money you save by taking the solar leap will help the USA grow American jobs.

Many site-specific installation factors need to be considered when planning for your grid-tied or off-grid solar panel kit. Budget, available roof or ground space and other factors will heavily influence your choice of packages. If you are planning to attach your home system to your roof, first decide which solar panel size will be the best fit. Consider obstructions such as chimneys, plumbing stacks and roof vents you have on your home. Grid-tied and off-grid kits consist of solar panels, cables in conduit, racks and AC as well as DC disconnect electric boxes with switches. Types of inverters and grounding rods or methods are also a consideration. Blue Pacific Solar can help you decide which kit is best for your house. Usually the largest system you can afford will be the most cost effective in price per watt having the best return on investment. However, even a small solar panel kit can reduce part of your utility bill putting money back into your household.

The sun over your home or commercial business is a natural source of energy for cheap electricity. Installation panel kits can lower cooling and heating costs by offsetting electric bills. Photovoltaic energy systems are hard at work anywhere the sun shines and no matter where you live you have an abundance of sunlight. Residential and commercial solar kits have no moving parts and require no maintenance lasting for decades.

DIY home installation kits start with DC electricity from sunlight. The output of solar kits varies throughout the day with changes in cloud cover and weather. The characteristics of DC electricity is different from AC current coming off the grid. Systems must utilize the entire solar day which typically is about 6 hours of useful sunlight.

Choosing the right size solar panel kit for your San Diego Home. The first step you take after you have considered available roof or ground space, is to look at your home monthly average electricity usage from your electrical bill. The key number you are interested in finding is your most current 12 month total kWh (Kilowatt Hours). Because of seasonal considerations it is always a good idea to look at average daily usage from the most current 12 months utility bills. Here at Blue Pacific Solar when we are designing a home solar kit we prefer evaluation a 12 month kWh history dividing it by 365 to get the average kWh per day. When you are designing an off-grid system you will be particularly interested in the kWh of the month of December since it has the least number of available sun hours and is usually considered as a base line factor in the design methodology.

The next step in choosing the right size solar panel kit after locating your average daily kWh usage then divide that by the number of available sun hours. For example, look to the sun map we provide. That solar irradiance that we show is compiled from 20 years of weather data and commonly used by solar companies when calculated the size of home or commercial systems. Example 18 kWh / 4.7 average sun hours = 3.8 kW x 1,000 (kW to Watts) = 3,830 watts needed.

Your 3rd step is to calculate the number of solar panels required for the right size home kit you need. Finding out how many solar modules you need is one of the final steps in sizing your home system. Take the watts needed to produce and divide the watt STC rating of the solar panel you selected, then divide that number by the inverter efficiency which is usually about .94. You now have about the total number of modules you need to size your residential or commercial solar panel kit. This method does not consider all the de-rate factors but it will get you close enough you can now look and the different systems.

Just a little more about “San Diego Solar Insolation”. The suns insolation is measured in kilowatt hours per square meter per day in areas throughout the world. A common term used by solar installers everywhere is “sun-hours per day”. To find the average sun-hours per day in San Diego, look at the solar insolation map provided by the team here at Blue Pacific Solar in the LH column of our kit pages.

If you are sizing a solar panel kit for your grid tie home or off grid cabin use the lowest daily irradiance number which is December for your area. If you are looking for a utility grid-tied solar panel package with net metering, the average daily sun hours or solar insolation is what you want to use to start your planning. Either way for the best low cost solar panels for your home DIY installation or off-grid system Blue Pacific Solar can provide you with the expertise and support to help you make the best choice for your budget.

How Much Does Car Paint Cost

A car paint cost will vary depending on several factors. There are slight differences with the different types of car paint used for an auto car paint job.

To understand why the cost of a particular paint is different from another, one should know the different factors that contribute to the cost of a specific kind of auto paint.

There are several different types of car paint available on the market today and each type will have different costs. Based on the several factors, including the amount of paint needed, the finish and type of paint, auto paint prices vary greatly. The cost of each type of auto paint will also depend on the metallic qualities, finish, shade and pattern. There are four main types of car paint available enamel, lacquer, urethane and water-based paints. Each of these types of paints has their own advantages and disadvantages.

    Enamel Auto Paint

Enamel auto paint or acrylic enamel car paint is tougher than acrylic lacquer paints since it dries to a hard shell. However, acrylic enamel paints do not go on as easily as acrylic lacquer paint. There are some enamel color paints that require a two-stage system. This means that a clear topcoat is used aside from the enamel paint. There are also some that use a single stage system wherein the enamel paint is the only one used. Enamel auto paints can set a car owner back about $50 a gallon, depending on the brand of paint they prefer.

    Acrylic Lacquer Auto Paint

Acrylic lacquer auto paint, on the other hand, is probably the cheapest type of auto paint available on the market today. This type of paint is suitable for inexperienced car painters since it can easily be applied. However, lacquer is often considered a soft paint so it chips easily. Acrylic lacquer auto paint is also not chemical resistant so vehicles painted with this type of paint can expect to do regular paint jobs. Since acrylic lacquer paint is considered to be the least expensive, this type of paint can cost approximately $30 to $40 a gallon.

Another type of auto car paint is the urethane-based paints. The acrylic urethane combines some of the characteristics of the acrylic enamel and acrylic lacquer paints. This type of auto paint can be applied easily and has the strength of enamel paint. However, urethane paints do require three other products for a complete look the color, a catalyst and a reducer. Urethane auto paints are a little bit more expensive and can cost up to $70 to $90.

The newest type of auto paint that is fast becoming popular is the water-based paint. Considered to be the most versatile, water-based paints are generally used on existing paint jobs, metal and primer. This type of paint is also commonly used for customized paintings. However, there are currently not too many color choices for water-based paints. It costs about $120 a gallon.

The brand of the paint is often a factor that contributes to the price of auto paint. Expect to have top quality brand paints, like DuPont Imron, to be a bit more expensive than generic, cheap brands of paint.

Inground Swimming Pool Heater Costs: Buy, Install, Run

Everybody likes warm pool water. I’m no exception, anything below 82 is too cold for me! But heating pool water seems extravagant and expensive! However, I suppose that depends on your threshold for financial pain. After the cost to buy a pool heater, there is the cost to install a pool heater, and then the cost to run a pool heater.

Solar heat is Free, but not so reliable. Pool heat pumps cost less to operate than gas heaters in most states, although the price of Natural Gas has come down as the US is now the world’s largest producer of Natural Gas.

On average, pool heaters cost $100-$300 per month to operate, depending on many factors:

    • Type and size of pool heater
    • Average daily temperatures
    • Pool covered or uncovered
    • Heavy rains and high winds
    • Cost of gas or electricity
    • How warm (or hot) you like it

    Solar Pool Heaters

How Much Do Solar Pool Heaters Cost?

It depends on how large your pool is, or how much surface area. Multiply your pool length x width to calculate surface area, and install a number of panels to equal 70-90% of the pool surface area. Use more if sun exposure is partially blocked during parts of the day, or you don’t have a direct southern exposure for the solar panels. Inground poo solar heaters should also use a Solar Controller, to optimize and automate heating cycles.

The cost for an inground solar pool heater system is $1500-$2000.

Cost of Solar Pool Heater Installation?

Installing a solar pool heater can be done in one day by two people. Steps involve mounting the panels on a roof or rack, connecting plumbing from the pool equipment pad to the roof and back, mounting the Solar Controller and installing the sensors. PVC plumbing and fittings, and pipe connectors will need to be purchased separately.

The cost to install a solar pool heater system is $500-$1000.

How Much does it Cost to Run a Solar Pool Heater?

Well now, solar heat is free! No cost to run a solar heater. Very little maintenance also, since there are so few moving parts – you may never need repair. Most pool solar systems will last about 10-20 years, depending on the material they are made from, before needing heavy repairs or replacement.

The cost to run a solar pool heater is $0.

    Pool Heat Pumps

How Much Do Pool Heat Pumps Cost?

Heat pumps are not cheap to buy, especially as the units become bigger. The technology inside is the same as a large A/C unit for a home with central air, with the exception that a pool heat pump has water running through it. Heat pumps range in size from 50K Btu’s up to 150K Btus’s. For an average inground pool, 100 Btus’s may be a good size, with larger units for shady pools, large pools, or high wind areas.

The cost to buy an inground pool heat pump is $2500-$3500.

Cost of Pool Heat Pump Installation?

Installing a pool heat pump involves placing the unit on a heavy pad or slab, and plumbing the pool return pipe in and out of the unit. We recommend that a qualified electrician bring the power to the unit, as it needs a dedicated 40-50 amp breaker, and needs to be bonded, or connected to the pool bonding wire.

The cost to install a pool heat pump is $500-$1000.

How Much does it Cost to Run a Pool Heat Pump?

It depends on many factors, such as how much you are raising the temperature, outside air temperature, wind speed and whether you cover the pool or not. The largest factor may be the cost of electricity in your area. Some parts of the country have relatively inexpensive electricity, while in other energy poor states (like California, Hawaii and many New England states), the cost of electricity can be twice as much. The cost of electricity, or national average has almost doubled since 2000.

The cost to run a pool heat pump is $100-$200 per month.

    Gas Pool Heaters

How Much Do Gas Pool Heaters Cost?

Propane or Natural, same price. Gas pool heaters are sized according to the size of the pool, or if you have an attached spa that you want to heat to over 100 degrees. Most inground pools will install at least a 250K Btu gas heater, up to a 400K size. Cupro Nickel heat exchangers are recommended for salt water pools, and some states require that pool heaters be LoNox, or low emissions.

The cost of a Gas Pool Heater is $1500-$2500

Cost of Gas Pool Heater Installation?

After placement and plumbing of a gas pool heater, there is still electricity and gas hook-up. Electricity is usually tapped off of the timeclock or outlet, no separate breaker is needed. Gas hook-up should be done by a licensed gas contractor, and the gas meter (NG) may need to be upsized – call your gas supplier with pool heater BTU input, and they can install a larger meter if needed.

The cost to install a gas pool heater is $500-$1500

How Much does it Cost to Run a Gas Pool Heater?

Like heat pumps, the cost to heat a pool with gas will vary, by pool size and temperature rise, and also by month. June-August will typically be the cheapest months to use gas heat, while earlier and later months with cooler temperatures will take drastically more gas to heat the pool. With lower costs for Natural Gas in recent years, the cost for propane is now 2-3x higher than NG.

The cost to run a gas pool heater is $200-$400 per month.

In Summation – for most inground pool owners, installing a New pool heater (not a replacement, which has a cheaper installation cost), new pool heaters cost between $1500-$3500, depending on type and size.

The cost to run a pool heater, with some conservation practices, runs from $0 (solar heater) to over $300 per month. In actuality, monthly spend will vary, according to outside temperatures. In the hotter months of your swim season, you’ll use much less gas or electricity as you would during the colder months, early and late in the swim season.

Most inground pool owners spend about $200 per month to heat a pool, on average. Using a cover, either automatic cover, solar cover or liquid solar blanket can reduce heat loss and evaporation by 75%, dramatically reducing energy expense. Lowering the thermostat during periods of non-use also reduces the cost to run a pool heater.

Dog Bites Accounted For More Than One-Third Of All Homeowners Liability Pay Outs Last Year As Cost Per Claim Soars

NEW YORK, May 14, 2015 — Dog bites (and other dog-related injuries) accounted for more than one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claim dollars paid out in 2014, costing in excess of $530 million, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) and State Farm ®, the largest writer of homeowners insurance in the United States.

An analysis of homeowners insurance data by the I.I.I. found that while the number of dog bite claims nationwide decreased 4.7 percent in 2014, the average cost per claim for the year was up 15 percent. The average cost paid out for dog bite claims nationwide was $32,072 in 2014, compared with $27,862 in 2013.

“The average cost per claim nationally has risen more than 67 percent from 2003 to 2014, due to increased medical costs as well as the size of settlements, judgments and jury awards given to plaintiffs, which are still on the upswing,” said Loretta Worters. vice president with the I.I.I.

The study noted that California continued to have the largest number of claims in the U.S. at 1,867. Ohio had the second highest number of claims at 1,009. While New York had only the third highest number of claims at 965, it registered the highest average cost per claim in the country: a startling $56,628. The trend in higher costs per claim is attributable not simply to dog bites but also to dogs knocking down children, cyclists, the elderly, etc. all of which can result in fractures and other blunt force trauma injuries that impact the potential severity of the losses.

    Be a Responsible Dog Owner

Even normally docile dogs may bite when they are frightened or when defending their puppies, owners or food. However, the best way to protect yourself is to prevent your dog from biting anyone in the first place. The most dangerous dogs are those that fall victim to human shortcomings such as poor training, irresponsible ownership and breeding practices that foster viciousness.

“All dogs have the potential to bite, but for most, biting is a last resort,” said Victoria Stilwell. star of Animal Planet’s hit TV series It’s Me or the Dog . “If time is taken to raise, teach and socialize a dog correctly, the likelihood of a bite incident occurring is extremely low,” explained Stilwell, a passionate advocate for positive reinforcement training methods. “Confident dogs have less need to use aggressive behavior.”

National Dog Bite Prevention Week ® (May 17-23, 2015), is an annual event designed to provide consumers with information on how to be responsible pet owners while increasing awareness of a serious public health issue.

Taking the following steps can reduce the chances of your dog biting someone:

    • Consult with a professional (e.g. veterinarian, animal behaviorist or responsible breeder) to learn about suitable breeds of dogs for your household and neighborhood.
    • Spend time with a dog before buying or adopting it. Use caution when bringing a dog into a home with an infant or toddler. A dog with a history of aggression is inappropriate in a household with children.
    • Be sensitive to cues that a child is fearful of or apprehensive about a dog and, if so, delay acquiring a dog. Never leave infants or young children alone with any dog.
    • Socialize your dog so it knows how to act with other animals and people.
    • Discourage children from disturbing a dog that is eating or sleeping.
    • Be cautious when exposing your dog to new situations in which you are unsure of its response.
    • Never approach a strange dog and always avoid eye contact with a dog that appears threatening.
    • Immediately seek professional advice from veterinarians, animal behaviorists or responsible breeders if your dog develops aggressive or undesirable behaviors.

Determining Your Car – s Value and Cost of Repair #car #price #checker

    #book value of a car
    #

Determining Your Car s Value and Cost of Repair

Determining Your Car s Value and Cost of Repair

There are several standard guidelines for determining the value of your car for insurance purposes. You and your insurer can refer to one of the books that list the depreciated value of all new and used cars. One of these books is published by the National Association of Automobile Dealers another is published by Kelley Blue Book .

When you file your claim, your insurance company will refer you to a claims adjuster. The adjuster will verify the loss and determine what it will cost to repair the car. The adjuster’s estimate can serve as a benchmark to which to compare your own mechanic’s estimate.

No good adjuster or insurance company will expect you to sign an agreement accepting the insurer’s estimate as the total claim payment until you’ve established, to your own satisfaction, that it will cover the cost of repair. The insurer will expect you to get your own estimate from your mechanic, garage or car dealer. Don’t allow yourself to feel pressured into accepting the insurer’s estimate of repair costs without getting at least one estimate of your own.

Your insurance company can’t require you to have repairs done at a particular shop. But they can insist that you get more than one estimate for the work to be done on your car. Just as you want to make sure that your car is adequately repaired, the insurer wants to make sure it doesn’t pay a grossly inflated repair bill.

Don’t be surprised if your insurance company opts to pay for the lowest bid. You don’t have to accept that bid if you believe the low bid won’t adequately repair your car. Don’t hesitate to argue with the adjuster if you really believe his repair estimate is too low based on what your mechanic has told you.

One factor that could reduce the amount of your claim for a repair job is what insurance companies call betterment. If your old car is repaired with brand-new parts, your insurer may argue that the repairs have actually enhanced the car’s value and therefore they can legitimately reduce your claim by the difference between a used part and a new one.

It is up to your insurer to decide whether to pay for repairing your car or to declare it a total loss and pay you its book value. Most standard auto policies will not pay to repair a vehicle if the repairs cost more than the cash value assigned to the car. There won’t be any dispute about whether to repair the car if it was completely totaled. But you may argue about what the pieces of the car were worth when they were assembled as a car. For you to get a settlement higher than the book value of your car’s make and model, you will have to submit evidence such as mileage records, service history and affidavits from mechanics to show that your car was worth more. You’re entitled to the market price of the car you just lost. You shouldn’t get more or less than what you are due.

True Dealer’s Cost and Making Your Offer

Last Modified: April 03, 2017 by Jeff Ostroff | Originally Published February 26, 2000

CarBuyingTips.com will show you how to figure out how much the dealer paid for the car. To help do this, we will make use of some great free sites. I have also created a free Offer Spreadsheet that will calculate a fair offer for both you and the dealership. Once you fill it out you’ll be able to use it during your negotiations.

How Much is Fair to Offer the Dealer?

In order to calculate your offer, the first thing you have to do is find out how much they paid for the car. Then you will be able to offer them a deal that gives them a fair profit.

Don’t just make up a number for the offer, make an educated offer based on the dealer’s actual cost. It will take some time and research so you must be patient.

At the dealership, one of the first things you should do is ask them to show you the factory invoice for the car. If they refuse your request, I will show you how you can get the information online.

Your Offer Should Be 3% – 5% Over Actual Cost

To be fair for both sides, you should make an offer of 3% – 5% over the actual dealer’s cost, not above the invoice price. Dealerships will gladly accept a 5% profit. In fact, many dealers survive on 3%. I have done extensive research with auto industry insiders and have verified this to be true.

You will find that a lot of dealers will charge dealer prep fees and advertising fees to offset their expenses. Meeting sales goals will also bring income to the dealership in the form of incentives from the manufacturer and these incentives further offset their costs.

Their bread and butter is taking advantage of uninformed buyers. Don’t misunderstand me and think I’m saying that they shouldn’t make any profit, I’m just saying that it needs to be fair. They make additional money from trade-ins, credit insurance, finance, accessories, extended warranties, rust proofing, etc.

How Much Did the Dealer Really Pay for the Car?

Dealer Cost is Not the Factory Invoice Price!

The dealer’s actual net cost of the car is usually much less, made up of 3 parts:

Invoice Price – Factory Holdback – Factory To Dealer Incentives = Actual Cost

Magicians have nothing on car dealers when it comes to keeping secrets and how much they actually paid for the car is their most important secret. You’ll hear a lot about the factory invoice and the salesman will try to make you believe that it shows their true cost. Don’t fall for this pitch because it’s not correct. Knowing the true cost is your most powerful weapon when negotiating with the dealer.

    CarBuyingTips.com Explains Factory Holdback

Dealers are charged a holdback by the manufacturer. If you aren’t shown how much it is you can estimate it as 3% of the invoice price minus destination and delivery for domestic cars, 2% for imports. The dealer gets the holdback from the factory after they sell the car. It will be subtracted when you calculate the true cost.

The exact calculation for the holdback varies by manufacturer. Some calculate it based on MSRP while other use the Invoice Price. It varies between 0% and 3% depending on the manufacturer.

    Factory To Dealer Incentives Uncovered

There are hidden factory to dealer incentives built into the invoice price. They can be huge and they reduce the dealer’s effective cost of the car.

Do not confuse these with factory to consumer incentives (better know as rebates). Rebates are paid by the factory to you or they are subtracted from the final price. The rebate amount should be subtracted after the price is agreed upon.

    The Factory Invoice Explained

The factory invoice lists the base model of the car, all option packages, floor mats, body trims and destination charge. For most manufacturers it will list the holdback (sometimes it is abbreviated as H/B or something similar). If the holdback isn’t listed then estimate it. To make sure the one the salesman shows you is real, compare the numbers with your research. Make sure not to confuse the MSRP on the window sticker with the invoice price!

Note for Honda Buyers: To maximize dealer profit, Honda options are installed at the dealer. Unfortunately this makes it impossible to lookup the cost of these options. Use Toyota’s option pricing as a competitive guide for negotiating.

Invoice Price is the Amount the Dealer Paid not the Cost

This can get somewhat confusing so the best way to understand it is to think of it like a rebate you get from a product. If you buy something for $39 and send in a $10 rebate form, you paid $39 but it only cost you $29.

Where to Find Invoice Prices and Secret Incentives

I recommend that you get the Fighting Chance package. They have the most up to date and accurate information for invoice prices and secret incentives. They charge $39.95 for the first vehicle and $15 for each additional vehicle. The package is well worth the cost especially since they will also give you a coach to help you through the process if needed.

TrueCar will show you the invoice price for the complete configuration on their TrueCar Curve. To see the invoice price and MSRP for individual options, you will have to click the link near the top of the page. To make it easier to see where to look and click, we have circled both areas in red on the image below. While you are there, you can see the TrueCar price and use their service to get a guaranteed quote.

TrueCar also offers this information at no charge but it isn’t always as accurate or up to date. Most of the services in our chapter How to Buy a New Car on the Internet like Cars.com offers this information at no charge but it isn’t always as accurate or up to date. At CarBuyingTips.com we always tell you to keep the old saying in mind, you get what you pay for.

    Calculating Your Offer

You will offer 3% – 5% above the dealer’s true cost. Do not include destination charges or any fees when you add this amount. I have created a spreadsheet that will do all the calculations for you. Click here to download our free Offer Spreadsheet .

    Offer Calculation Example

    • Example Invoice = $19,922
    • Example Holdback = $597 (3% of Invoice)
    • Example MSRP = $22,385
    • Example Destination Charge = $455
    • Example Secret Factory to Dealer Incentive = $500
    • Example Customer Rebate = $400

    Dealer’s Actual Cost = $19,922 (Invoice Price) – $500 (Incentive) – $597 (Holdback) = $18,825

Note: If you got the invoice price from the actual invoice instead of looking it up online you will need to subtract the destination charge as well.

    Your Offer = $18,825 (Actual Cost) + $941 (5% of Actual Cost) = $19,766

    Or, simply $18,825 x 1.05 = $19,766

Now you add the $455 destination charge (which is a legitimate charge) and you get $20,221 before tax and registration. This is a very fair offer that gives the dealer a 5% profit. Don’t forget about the $400 rebate. This is an incentive for you and does not effect the dealer’s profit. Your final price should be $19,821 plus tax and registration.

Finding a developer for an app project is a challenge. We talk to people all the time who are lost in the process of finding the right developer for their mobile app idea. Sure, you can hit the search engines and find hundreds of mobile app developers. But how do you find a mobile app developer with the experience and ability to take your idea from concept to the app store? Here are six principles that will help

    • One is not enough. Get multiple bids from experienced app developers. The more you talk to experienced developers, the more you ll learn about your project. If the developer thinks you re serious and not just kicking tires, he will be happy to share his thoughts during the initial call. This will help you in two ways finding the right developer and refining your app idea.
    • Don t be penny-wise and pound-foolish. The lowest bid is not always the best or even the cheapest. We see project after project in which someone hired the cheapest alternative and ended up with a shattered project or nothing at all. Work only with reputable, experienced app developers. They may not be the lowest bid, but you get what you pay for.
    • Ask common sense questions. For example, if your mobile app includes a social network, ask the developer about his experience developing apps with social networks. If your mobile app will be graphics rich, ask the developer about his graphics capabilities. Get the answers you need. If they duck your questions, run. Fast.
    • Check out the developer s website. If the developer s website does not impress you, how likely is it the developer will impress you with the app you ll get? If the developer doesn t have a website
    • Check out other apps developed by the developer. A developer s app portfolio is like a picture “worth a thousand words. Do the developer s prior apps have the look and feel you want for your app?
    • Finally, don t pay to train an app developer. Hire only experienced developers with at least one app in the iTunes store or one deployed Android or Blackberry app.

The High Cost of Losing Your Keys

    1 of 5

Our car keys have an uncanny ability to get lost inside coat pockets or underneath couch cushions or to disappear altogether. Prior to the 1990s, this wasn’t a big deal. You could get a spare key at any hardware store or locksmith shop, not to mention at the car dealership, of course. But because it was easy to copy a key, it was also easy for a thief to steal your car. These days, advances in key technology have made vehicles more difficult to steal, but the price has been costlier key replacements.

Here’s a rundown of what you’ll face in the way of cost if you have to replace your key, along with some alternatives that could lower the bill. The prices quoted here are for Santa Monica, California, and West Los Angeles, an area where an hour of labor at an auto dealership can cost more than $100. Labor costs in your region may vary.

    Basic Keys and Fob

A basic car key, which was common up until the mid-to late-1990s, has no security feature other than its unique cut. The shank, which is the long metal part of the key, has cuts and grooves like a house key. It’s easy to copy these keys. A locksmith doesn’t need any extra equipment: He can use the same machine he uses to cut other keys.

A basic key will cost about $3 at a locksmith. The only benefit of having the job done at the dealership would be to get the automaker’s branding on the head of the key. A Honda dealership near the Edmunds office charges about $12 for a basic key.

On most modern cars, an electronic key fob (also known as a remote or transmitter) is an integral part of the key set. At the dealership, the cost of replacing an electronic fob can range from $50-$90, depending on the automaker or complexity of the design. All fobs need to be programmed. Some dealerships will do it for free, while others will charge a half hour to an hour of labor.

There is a way around this fee, however. Most fobs can be programmed with a specific combination of button presses on the remote and key turns in the ignition. Some owner’s manuals will show you how to do it, and you can also find this information online.

Finally, there are aftermarket fobs that you can purchase online or from a locksmith. Like most aftermarket products, the quality will vary, but they are a less expensive alternative if you’ve lost your fob.

    Transponder Keys

After the mid- to late-1990s, manufacturers began placing a transponder chip in the plastic head of the key. The chip emits a signal to a receiver in the ignition. If this “immobilizer” detects the wrong signal meaning that the wrong key is in the ignition the vehicle will not start.

A transponder key’s shank is either a basic key or a laser-cut key (more on laser-cut keys later). The major difference between a basic key and a transponder key is that the chip in the transponder key must be programmed before it can start the vehicle. All dealerships have the machines necessary to program the key. Some might program it for free, but others will charge up to an hour of labor. Most auto locksmiths should also have these machines.

In some vehicles, the transponder key and the fob are an all-in-one unit. This adds to the price of the key and makes it more difficult to get a spare anywhere but at the dealership.

We checked the price of a basic transponder key on a late-model Ford F-150. The dealership quoted $160 for the key and an additional $75 for the fob. If you go to a locksmith, expect to pay roughly $20-$30 less.

A potential low-cost alternative for access to your car is to order a basic key without the transmitter. This key will do everything but start the engine and can come in handy if you ever leave your keys inside the vehicle.

If you’re the type who frequently loses keys, you might be able to save money on the programming by creating a third key to have as a spare. If you already have two keys, a number of vehicle brands will allow you to program a third key on your own. You can have a locksmith cut this “emergency” key and then you follow the procedure for programming, which can frequently be found in your owner’s manual. If the manual doesn’t show you how, try searching online for the procedure. Try “How to program a (insert your year, make, model) key” as your search terms.

Our searches found a method that is said to work on many domestic vehicles. Insert one of your two working keys and turn the ignition to the “on” position for at least three seconds (the car does not need to be started), then repeat the process with the second key.

Now insert the new third key and again turn it to the “on” position for another few seconds. This should program the extra key. Before you try this method and spend money on a key, however, we suggest you check with the dealership or your local automotive locksmith to see if the process is one that will reliably work with your car.

    Laser-Cut Keys

You can tell a laser-cut key apart from a basic key because the shank is slightly thicker and has fewer carved-out grooves. Laser-cut keys are often referred to as sidewinder keys, due to the distinctive winding cut on the shank. The machines needed to cut these keys are significantly more expensive than a standard key-cutting machine and are not as likely to be found at every locksmith or hardware store.

Laser-cut keys also have built-in transponder chips and they need to be programmed at the dealership or by a locksmith, preferably one who is a member of the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). You can search for a certified locksmith near you by visiting the AOLA Web site .

All-in-one laser-cut keys are becoming more popular, but as we mentioned, these keys are more expensive and typically need to be replaced at the dealership. Including labor, these can range from $150-$250, which is the price of a laser-cut key for a Honda Insight. for example.

    Switchblade Key

Switchblade keys have shanks that fold into the fob when they’re not in use and pop out with the press of a button. They can have a basic cut or a laser cut. One small advantage of the switchblade key is that its components can be purchased separately. If for some reason your key is damaged and no longer works, you can buy the shank separately for roughly $60-$80. But the more likely scenario is that you’ve lost your key, in which case you’ll need both it and the fob into which it folds. This can cost between $200 and $300, once you factor in programming of both components.

    Smart Keys

Smart keys aren’t keys in the traditional sense. They are fobs that are either inserted in the dash or, in the more advanced systems, they stay in your pocket or purse. The driver turns the car on and off with the press of a button .

A smart key’s main form of security is its ability to use rolling security codes. The system randomizes the correct code and prevents thieves from hacking it through the use of a device called a code grabber. The vehicle’s computer recognizes the code emitted by the smart key and verifies it before starting the engine. Mercedes-Benz was one of the first automakers to utilize this technology, and even coined the term “SmartKey.” Every vehicle in its lineup now uses the SmartKey. And only dealers can replace them.

“The German brands use proprietary technology,” says Mike Howell, owner of Santa Monica Lock & Safe Co. “We’re not able to copy those.”

Smart keys aren’t just limited to German automakers. Nearly every car brand has a smart key bundled in its high-tech packages. Nissan. for example, makes it available on a number of models ranging from the Altima to the 370Z .

With a smart key, there’s no avoiding the dealership for a replacement. And while it’s handy to carry smart keys in your purse or pocket, these are the very places you will feel the pain when you lose them. The cost of replacing and reprogramming a smart key can range from $220 on a Nissan Altima up to $400 on an Acura RL .

    Better Safe Than Sorry

There’s no denying that modern keys are expensive. And so the best defense against losing them is a good offense. It is better to get a spare key now, on your terms, than to stress out and spend the money in what might be an emergency. You can take advantage of the cost-cutting methods here and avoid the labor charges by programming the key yourself.

Finally, if you are someone who is tempting fate by only having one set of keys, consider this: If you lose all the keys to your car, you will need to get it towed to a dealership and it can potentially cost you close to $1,000 to replace the locks on your car.
