What Is Keratoconus?

We see through the cornea. which is the clear outer lens or “windshield” of the eye. Normally, the cornea has a dome shape, like a ball. Sometimes, however, the structure of the cornea is just not strong enough to hold this round shape and the cornea bulges outward like a cone. This condition is called keratoconus .

What Causes Keratoconus?

Tiny fibers of protein in the eye called collagen help hold the cornea in place and keep it from bulging. When these fibers become weak, they cannot hold the shape and the cornea becomes progressively more cone shaped.

Keratoconus is caused by a decrease in protective antioxidants in the cornea. The cornea cells produce damaging by-products, like exhaust from a car. Normally, antioxidants get rid of them and protect the collagen fibers. If antioxidants levels are low, the collagen weakens and the cornea bulges out.

Keratoconus appears to run in families. If you have it and have children, it’s a good idea to have their eyes checked for it starting at age 10. The condition progresses more rapidly in people with certain medical problems, including certain allergic conditions. It could be related to chronic eye rubbing.

Keratoconus usually starts in the teenage years. It can, though, begin in childhood or in people up to about age 30. It’s possible it can occur in people 40 and older, but that is less common.

The changes in the shape of the cornea can happen quickly or may occur over several years. The changes can result in blurred vision. glare and halos at night, and the streaking of lights.

The changes can stop at any time, or they can continue for decades. There is no way to predict how it will progress. In most people who have keratoconus, both eyes are eventually affected, although not always to the same extent. It usually develops in one eye first and then later in the other eye.

With severe keratoconus, the stretched collagen fibers can lead to severe scarring. If the back of the cornea tears, it can swell and take many months for the swelling to go away. This often causes a large corneal scar.

Continued

Can Keratoconus Damage Vision?

The changes to the cornea can make it impossible for the eye to focus without eyeglasses or contact lenses. In fact, a corneal transplant may be needed to restore vision if the condition is severe.

Laser vision correction surgery — LASIK – is dangerous for people with keratoconus because it can further weaken the cornea and make vision worse. Anyone with even a small degree of keratoconus should not have LASIK surgery.

How Is Keratoconus Diagnosed?

Keratoconus changes vision in two ways:

  • As the cornea changes from a ball shape to a cone shape, the smooth surface becomes wavy. This is called irregular astigmatism .
  • As the front of the cornea expands, vision becomes more nearsighted. That is only up close objects can be seen clearly. Anything too far away will look like a blur.

An eye doctor may notice symptoms during an eye exam. You may also mention symptoms that could be caused by keratoconus. These include:

  • A change of vision
  • Double vision when looking with just one eye
  • Objects both near and far looking distorted
  • Bright lights looking like they have halos around them
  • Lights streaking
  • Seeing ghost images
  • Being uncomfortable driving due to blurry vision

To be sure you have keratoconus, your doctor needs to measure the shape of the cornea. There are several different ways this can be done.

The most common way is called ‘cornea topography,’ which snaps a photo of the cornea and analyzes it in seconds. Children of parents with keratoconus should have a cornea topography done every year starting at age 10 to monitor the cornea.

How Is Keratoconus Treated?

Treatment usually starts with new eyeglasses. If eyeglasses don’t provide adequate vision, then contact lenses. usually rigid gas permeable contact lenses. may be recommended. With mild cases, new eyeglasses can usually make vision clear again. Eventually, though, it will probably be necessary to use contact lenses or seek other treatments to strengthen the cornea and improve vision.

A treatment called cornea collagen crosslinking is often effective to help prevent progression. Intacs are implants that are placed under the surface of the cornea to reduce the cone shape and improve vision.

If eyeglasses and contact lenses no longer provide stable and comfortable good quality vision, a cornea transplant can be performed. This involves removing the center of the cornea and replacing it with a donor cornea that is stitched into place.

VAT identification numbers

Sometimes also known as a VAT registration number, this is the unique number that identifies a taxable person (business) or non-taxable legal entity that is registered for VAT.

Who needs a VAT number?

Most businesses (and other persons carrying out an economic activity ) need a VAT number (see Article 214 VAT Directive for full details).

In particular, business is obliged to register for VAT in the following cases:

  • when it carries out the supply of goods or services taxed with VAT;
  • when it makes an intra-EU acquisition of goods;
  • when it receives services for which it is liable to pay VAT (under Article 196 VAT Directive );
  • when it supplies services for which the customer is liable to pay VAT (under Article 196 VAT Directive ).

Does the same VAT number apply for all EU countries?

Every EU country issues its own national VAT number.

This means that business supplying goods or services in several EU countries might be liable to get a VAT number in each of these countries.

A simplified registration (mini One Stop Shop) is available for businesses supplying telecommunications, broadcasting and electronic services.

Format of VAT numbers

Every VAT identification number must begin with the code of the country concerned and followed by a block of digits or characters.

Who issues a VAT number

The EU Commission has been made aware that companies in different Member States have been receiving proposals offering to obtain a valid VAT number against an advance payment. These proposals have the appearance of an official EU document.

The EU Commission reminds that only tax administrations have the right to issue a VAT number. If you are suspicious of unsolicited messages concerning obtaining a VAT number you are advised to check with the tax administration concerned.

The importance of VAT numbers

  • Used to identify tax status of the customer
  • Help to identify the place of taxation
  • Mentioned on invoices (except simplified invoices in certain EU countries)

Sketchy – Brooklyn shop may be a brothel open for business #business #contact #email

#

When a mysterious new storefront opened last month in the heart of brownstone Brooklyn, residents buzzed and blogged about what was behind the black door.

A red print curtain blocked the view inside, and a hand-drawn sign in the window, “TAO INC,” provided the only clue.

Would it be a new restaurant or fancy boutique like others along Smith Street, smack in the middle of the piping-hot neighborhoods of Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens and Gowanus?

Or, in a place where the median income is $113,000 and the average home price $684,000, could it be a brothel next door?

Online speculation spread about the goings-on at 257 Smith St.

Hints began to raise alarm among residents of the family-friendly and celeb-studded community, home to Ethan Hawke and Rose Byrne, and where Norah Jones spent $6.2 million on a renovated carriage house featured in “Eat Pray Love.”

One observer claimed to have spotted a young woman, dressed in only a nightgown, open the door.

“Something sketchy seems to be happening inside,” posted Katia Kelly on her Pardon Me for Asking site on Nov. 15. “It would appear that we now have a house of ill repute.”

The Post ventured beyond the black door to find that the area’s newest neighbor was, in fact, just that — a bordello barely masquerading as a massage spa.

Several ads on sex-seeking Web sites raised obvious red flags.

“Every day we have 8 girls working. u can pick,” Tao claimed in a listing on Backpage that showed busty Asian women in lingerie and encouraged men to “Come be a King.”

A Post reporter, posing as a massage customer, called the number listed online on Wednesday and asked for an appointment. A woman with an Asian accent answered and sent the address and massage prices — $50 for an hour, $40 for half an hour — via text. The message was embellished with 16 heart emojis.

He was ushered in by a petite 20-something Chinese woman wearing tight jeans shorts, high heels and a white lace baby-doll top.

She spoke almost no English but introduced herself as “Coco.”

Coco smiled and giggled girlishly as she took the reporter by the hand and led him down a dark, narrow hallway to a small purple room with a thin mattress on the floor. She asked for payment, and he handed over $50 for an hour massage. He was instructed to take off his clothes, skivvies included. He did.

He was told to lie face-down on the mattress, which was covered with a print sheet, red towel and white gauze fabric. She removed her heels and sat on his back. She kneaded the muscles on his back and shoulders with her hands for about 15 minutes.

Moaning sounds came from an unseen woman in a nearby room, along with a man’s voice and a clanking belt buckle.

She then had him turn over. “What you like?” she asked.

“Well. everything,” he replied.

The Tao ad offered hot stones and a milk and rose bath, so whatever she was proposing was unclear. She pouted and rubbed her fingers together, indicating money. He got up and fished out $160 in 20-dollar bills. “One more,” she said. He complied.

Coco proceeded to disrobe, taking off her black bra and red panties, which she twirled in front of the reporter s face.

She left briefly and came back. Coco proceeded to disrobe, taking off her black bra and red panties, which she twirled in front of his face. She grabbed the reporter’s hand and tried to induce him to touch her breasts. He refused.

She then pulled out a condom, unwrapped it and moved to put it on the reporter. He declined again. She seemed confused that he didn’t want sex.

Coco struggled to make herself understood. “I learn English,” she said but looked puzzled when asked how old she was and how long she had been in the country. She managed to convey that she was from Hong Kong and lived in the back of the parlor.

She also said — through mispronounced words and gestures — that she must remain on the premises 24 hours a day, and wasn’t allowed to leave.

Those indicators can be a sign that a brothel is engaged in human trafficking or coercion, according to experts.

As he was leaving, the reporter spotted two other young Asian women in a front room. They were dressed in bathrobes and seated on a futon.

Cops in the 76th Precinct are aware of Tao but have taken no action, according to a police source. The landlord did not return calls seeking comment.

Sex-selling massage parlors are increasingly common in New York, according to an investigation by the Contently Foundation that ran in The Post last year. And they are making inroads into well-heeled neighborhoods like Cobble Hill. One has reportedly opened on the Upper East Side.

Experts say such places, owned primarily by independent Chinese and Korean operators, are spreading to other metro areas, suburbs and small towns across the United States.

But the national epicenter of the Asian sex trade is located in Flushing, Queens, and such brothels purportedly now outnumber Starbucks in New York, and collectively do more than $1 billion a year in business.

I am currently going to Lansing Community College and am transferring to Central Michigan University in the fall. I took Composition 1 at Baker (I believe it is ENG 101) and neither Lansing Community College nor Central Michigan University take this as a transfer credit. I took Composition 2 (the class equivalent to English 2) at a different college and LCC and CMU accepted it, but now I have to take ENG 101 over again at LCC EVEN THOUGH I already took and passed Advanced Composition, which ENG 101 is a prerequisite for. I now have 2.5 elective credits in English and still have to take WRIT 121 at LCC, I wouldnt waste your money going there.

I now have to wait until winter to finish my bachelors degree because they one, they refuse to work with me to get my 3 classes done and because you can only take classes at set times during the year. I probably will have to attend another school and repeat everything all over, as most Baker credits do not transfer anywhere. They also do not offer all degrees at all campuses, meaning if you start it at one campus they could make you go to another that could be at least 2 hours away. They dont care if you have to quit your job or lose money to do this. Baker is suppose to be a collection of schools that work together, they do not. The Detroit area campuses are the only ones they really care about. My advice is skip Baker and go to a school that is well known nationwide, where youll get a good degree and be able to find work. Just a note; the 98% of our graduates are employed tactic they use, really means that most work in fast food or jobs that dont need a degree, but they are at least employed!
