The Cutting Edge of Medicine Medical Billing and Coding!

M edical Billing and Coding was at one time a career that you could launch by purchasing a book, investing in some computer software, and, once you were confident in your skills, starting a home business with which you provided this valuable service to a group of doctors.

Billing and coding continues to be a great career opportunity, with pay being considered generous for an entry level job. read more . .

article continued from above.

However, trying to educate yourself through methods that avoid college courses or classes may not be the best method of insuring that you will have a job once you have the knowledge. The two terms “billing” and “coding,” actually involve two different jobs which are often performed by the same person. Medical billing involves collecting data for all aspects of a claim, helping to make sure the medical facility is performing efficiently. Coding, on the other hand, is the application of the correct code to every medical procedure used in a particular case. Without correct codes, the insurance companies are unable to make correct, speedy payment. Both jobs require knowledge of medical procedures, anatomy and terminology along with an understanding of how the insurance industry operates.

The medical field has evolved dramatically over the past 10 to 15 years alone. The arrival of the Affordable Care Act has resulted in complex levels of medical coding; the new CD-10 has changed to available codes from just over 13,000 to 144,000. If the wrong code is entered on a bill, the doctor stands to lose thousands of dollars, both in the cost of refiling and in fines and reductions in payment from the insurance company. In fact, it is possible for a physician to lose his practice because of coding errors. As for lost revenue, Ruthann Russo, executive director of HP3 Healthcare Concepts, says that a review of one 200 physician multi-specialty group revealed that an estimated $10 million was simply lost because staff involved had not correctly billed the services.

Get Educated

These changes actually mean that billing and coding is as great a career opportunity as ever; in fact one national survey reports that there are 30% more positions than there are people to fill them, and the shortage is expected to increase. But doctors can no longer afford to take a chance on people who claim to know the business but have no formal training. Doctors are urged to hire personnel with AHIMA or APC certification, who have taken courses with AHIMA approved trainers. You may be expected to take courses in Health Information Management, Pharmacology, and Legal compliance as well as the courses in coding. However, don’t feel overwhelmed. Many schools have designed their programs to be completed in as little as four months. Those who complete the course work, a practicum, and pass the test receive certification and are considered billing and coding specialists.

Use our convenient service to research the education programs and get started on your own billing and coding career.

Get Paid

The pay for a billing/coding specialist varies from state to state but according to the BLS, the mean annual wage for Medical Records and Health Information Technicians overall, is about $38,860.

The hope is that you’ll be impressed enough to commit to purchasing the entire training program.

Be careful – I fell for this and spent several hundred dollars. It was an impressive looking website and slick marketing. Once I purchased all I received was a notebook of general information I could have easily found on the internet. Boy did I feel like a fool! And forget trying to get a refund.

Look out for Scams – Hold On to Your Credit Card

Also be wary of free medical billing training trial programs that require you to enter credit card information before viewing their “free” material. Supposedly if you decide not to take the complete course you have to call to cancel. I’m suspicious of anybody that wants a credit card up front. Once they get your credit card number it can be very difficult to get a refund or prevent them from charging you.

I’ve done this with other “free” offers before and found it almost impossible to cancel and get them to stop charging my credit card.

There are ways you can get free medical billing training. However the quality of the training may be lacking.

Get Real World Experience

Offer to work part time for a medical billing service for free – for a limited time of course. When I was anxious to learn medical billing, I offered to work for free. My thinking was that is a great way to get hands-on real world training.

I had a friend who started a medical billing business and was very busy. I talked to her about how she got started and asked for her advice. During our conversations I offered to work for free for a short time until I learned enough to start my own business.

Medical billing is the sort of work that can be done at home easily. Fortunately they didn’t take me up on the free part but did pay me for part time work from home. To me that was like getting paid to learn!

I started out working on insurance aging which involved calling insurance companies to follow up on unpaid claims and determine why they were rejected. I got progressively more experience and responsibilities until I felt comfortable marketing my own business.

If you are starting a medical billing business, this type of work is an excellent way gain experience and cultivate contacts with other people in the field – such as doctors, office managers, and other billers and coder.

There is a website called Quizlet which the worlds largest online student and teacher community. Their mission is to help students master the subjects they are learning. Quizlet has an almost overwhelming amount of medical billing and coding lessons, study guides, and tests from a wide variety of credible students and teachers.

Best of all it’s FREE!

Even better than free medical billing training is the thought of getting paid to learn. As mentioned above, any environment you can get into – even for pay that is less than the going rate – that allows you some experience in the field is a great help toward getting trained. This would be short term of course.

Consider opportunities at a medical billing services company, hospital or doctors office, or insurance company. Anything that gets you exposed to the field looks good on your resume. Remember your goal is getting experience – so a short term sacrifice in pay may be worth it to prove yourself and get good references.

One of the requirements I notice in medical billing job postings is experience in the field – probably more than training or credentials for medical billing. That’s why getting any experience you can is important. In this field there are many things that can’t be taught in a classroom environment.

Update 2017 – п»їVideoTrainingPro.comп»ї used to offer very good free medical billing training video’s. However they have recently removed them from their site. They seem to be concentrating on just Window’s training now. Not sure why as they were very well done.

If we can find where they have been moved to we will post a new link. They had an extensive (113) catalog of video’s on just about anything a medical billing specialist does.

Research the Internet for Free Medical Billing Training

There’s so much information from credible sources available on the internet on medical billing. You can educate yourself and find information on just about any topic. The challenge is being able to separate the credible and knowledgeable from the pretenders.

Even on this site I try to document my experiences, information, and other free medical billing training resources that may be helpful to others getting started in the medical billing and coding profession.

I found it can be difficult to find any in-depth information on particular topics. This takes a lot of time. There is a lot of online information on medical billing that seems to be almost entirely dedicated to marketing and not educating. These sites are just trying to sell something. Or on the opposite end of the spectrum having so much information that it’s overwhelming.

An example of this would be the HIPAA. There’s a tremendous amount of information about HIPAA available at CMS – The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services . But trying to determine what is relevant and applicable to a small practice is almost overwhelming as there are so many facets of HIPAA.

A lot of billing services are smart to educate themselves well on HIPAA (and other industry issues) and use this to educate, and market to, small practices. This is a great way to open doors and establish yourself as an expert.

American Association of Professional Coders ( AAPC ) is also has some great info on medical billing – although their main concentration is coding.

Other Free Medical Billing Training Resources

We’ve added free resources to this site to help those wanting to learn medical billing. These are also listed on our medical billing resources page:

Our free Medical Billing Terms eBook is a quick reference of medical billing terms we’ve compiled to help understand the terminology of medical billing. It’s a PDF file we will email to you at the link above which you can save locally or print out.

Our Medical Billing and Coding Careers Guide is a 15 page overview of medical billing for those considering a career in medical billing or a medical coding career. It’s kind of a condensed compilation of information available on the site in more detail. It may be helpful as a free medical billing training resource to explain the basics.

Something else that would have been helpful to me when getting into medical billing was something that explained how an insurance claim is processed.

The Medical Billing Insurance Claim Flowchart is another free medical billing training tool that shows a very simple flowchart explaining how healthcare claim processing works and how insurance claims billing works.

Our Medical Billing Books page has links to several affordable individual books on the fundamentals of medical billing from reputable sources. Many of our visitors have found these to be a great economical way to learn medical billing fundamentals.

Online Medical Coding Certificate

Reviewing patient records and getting vital health data where it needs to go relies on medical coding. In the Information Age, this system of universal code numbers assures the timely flow of medical data anywhere in the nation or world.

By earning your medical coding certificate through the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, you can take your courses online, for maximum convenience. You can even apply credit earned for the certificate toward our Bachelor of Science in health information management.

Certification

Graduates are eligible to seek the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). This certification distinguishes coders who exhibit commitment and demonstrate coding competencies across all settings, including hospitals and physician practices.

A critical part of the health information work flow

Medical coders ensure that insurance companies have the right information and patients know their billing and payment options. Accurate coding gets bills paid, patient data organized, and insurance information verified.

With proper medical coding:

  • Health care providers can precisely record patients’ care, so crucial procedures don’t get missed.
  • Tests and screenings aren’t needlessly repeated, which means patients don’t pay more than they should.
  • Insurers can quickly reimburse providers.

The increasing reliance on data

To make valid decisions, accurate information is key. The medical coder carefully reviews health records for accurate coding and billing. By earning this certificate, you’ll learn to understand medical terminology, private payer policies, and government regulations.

Electronic health records allow doctors, hospitals, and other providers to quickly share information, leading to swift and informed medical decision-making. This information holds great potential as a Big Data resource for analyzing specific codes—a method of studying how conditions progress and are treated on a mega scale.

Emerging technology issues

Data security and patient privacy are paramount in the age of electronic record-keeping. As you earn your certificate, you’ll not only gain understanding of medical coding and reimbursement systems, but also learn:

  • The latest principles in the emerging field of information governance.
  • Legal and ethical concepts of confidentiality and privacy in medicine and health care.

Projected employment growth for medical coders from 2012 to 2022

Careers in medical coding

Medical coders audit inpatient/outpatient health records (both paper and electronic) for appropriate ICD-9/ICD-10 and/or CPT code assignment. Coders also aid in revenue cycle auditing. Medical coders work in hospitals, physician offices, group practices, and insurance companies.

A certificate in medical coding can be the foundation for a variety of positions, including:

Medical Coding Careers

There are hundreds of medical coding programs available some of them are thorough and highly reliable, and others are quite the opposite. So how do you know where to place your future and your money? Choosing a medical coding program is easy when you look for one that is accredited or given the stamp of approval . Accreditation is essentially proof that a coding program has met third party standards of excellence, and could be a good place for you to receive your medical coding training.

Now when I say third party, I mean a group or organization that does not have any affiliations or ties to the program. Think of it as a neutral, unbiased opinion that is given by the group. Groups like the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA) strive to ensure that only the best programs and the students they produce are meeting industry standards. Accredited programs are generally regarded as authorities in medical coding and meet the essential requirements necessary to help its students achieve academic excellence. With all that, why would you even consider another program?

In order to be accredited, individual programs must prove that their curriculum, teachers and course requirements are top-notch. Because of this accreditation, you can feel assured that choosing to enroll in one of these programs is more secure and will help prepare you for your future. Many of the best medical coding programs will also provide test preparation for certification exams and perhaps assist with career placement once you have completed your course of study.

Graduates of accredited programs are more likely to get solid, steady jobs once they graduate, and continuing on to complete additional certifications only helps to solidify your presence in a rapidly growing field, which eventually earns them more money. If you are going to invest your time and effort, make sure you are focusing that time in a quality, respected environment and choosing an accredited program is just that.

What is a medical billing degree?

Medical billing and coding programs online

A medical billing degree prepares students to work in medical billing, assessing paperwork, entering data, and communicating with medical facilities and insurance companies. The interaction between the doctor, hospital, or other healthcare facility and the insurance company is known as the billing cycle. Some billing cycles are very short, while others are very long; it all depends on the complexity of the treatment and whether or not the insurance is going to cover it. This can be a long process at times and is aided by a medical billing agent who keeps track of the status of the bill. In a medical billing degree program students learn how to work with inpatient and outpatient billing. Some programs also teach students coding, which revolves around three primary types of medical coding. The program will help students prepare for a medical billing certificate, which enables them to work in their state. There are three types of certification exams a medical billing agent can sit to become eligible for work.

The majority of medical billing degree programs take eight months to a year to complete. The course work consists of learning billing procedures and coding, if you plan on being certified in both areas. Whether you are studying medical billing or billing and coding, you can expect the program to take about a year before you’re able to gain employment. Some medical billing degree programs that are exclusively online limit how many courses a student can take at once. For these programs, you may be in school about 14-16 months depending on the program. All of the details on how long a program will take and how many hours you’re allowed to register for will be explained in a course packet at a school or on the program’s website.

Can I earn a medical billing degree online?

Definitely! There are many, many options for someone exploring an online medical billing degree. Many of these programs are specifically catered for part time students who are under the stress of family life and work. Because of this the program may take longer to complete, but you’ll move at a pace that works for your lifestyle and schedule. This is very important when completing online courses. You never want to sign up for too much too soon, which is why some part time programs limit how many course you’re allowed to take. The idea is to set students up for success.

Flexibility is the main reason people choose to enroll in an online degree program. Online courses offer flexibility that traditional classes do not. You are able to do all of the work at home, on your own time. This is a major plus for working adults who have children to care for. A medical billing degree obtained online is viewed the same as one obtained in a traditional setting. You will not have a problem finding a job simply because you got your degree online. Think about your situation and what works best for your schedule. You can move at your own pace with an online medical billing degree.

What will I do as a medical billing agent?

Medical billing and coding programs online

A medical billing agent has a very important duty. He or she is responsible for every aspect of the patient file after the patient is diagnosed by doctors. Records contain a patient’s name, address, social security number, nature of illness, and the treatment plan. The doctor or medical professional in charge of the case creates a medical profile and course of action for treatment. This treatment plan is outlined in the records. From these records, a medical billing and coding agent relays the treatment plan to the insurance company via a series of codes. These codes appear on the medical claim form and are given to the insurance company. This is often done on a paper form, although some companies are converting to e-forms which are filled out electronically by a medical billing and coding agent.

This form is received by the insurance company which will deny or approve the claim. For high claims, insurance companies have their own medical reviewers who look over the claim. The medical reviewer assesses the legitimacy of the claim, the patient’s need for the procedure, and validity of the healthcare provider. If the claim is denied, the medical billing agent goes over the claim again, makes adjustments, and resubmits the claim. This can be done several times and goes on until the healthcare provider gives up or the insurance company pays the treatment in full. The rate of denied claims is high. About half of claims are denied upon first completion. There are several factors that play into this, including wrong diagnosis and treatments that are too similar to each other for one patient.

The job outlook for medical billing agents is exceptionally high and should remain that way for quite some time. The medical industry is growing as baby boomers age and populations in major cities continue to expand. As long as you graduate from an accredited school and have proper certification, you should not have an issue finding work as a medical billing agent. Many medical billing agents are now working from home since much of the work is done electronically. The transfer of medical billing to e-forms and revolving around technology may also lose some long time medical billing agents who are not willing to learn new programs. The medical billing field has seen little change in the past decades, but technology has quickly changed that. With e-forms, the appropriate documents and forms can be completed by a medical billing agent and sent the exact same day. The process of denials and resubmitting a form can also be done several times in one week versus stretching over the course of months.

Medical Billing Coding Degree Programs

Medical billing and coding degree programs are designed to prepare medical billing and coding students with the career skills and background knowledge they need to be competitive in the job market for medical billing and medical coding.

A degree can give medical billing and coding specialists an edge over others who have only on-the-job training. The background knowledge and skills taught in a medical billing degree program can also make medical billing and medical coding specialists more effective and more efficient on the job than specialists with other types of training. Thus, exploring your degree options is a good step to take as you prepare for this high-demand career.

Most medical coders get their medical billing and coding degrees from junior colleges and vocational schools, but degrees can also be attained by attending private and public universities or online degree programs.

Types of Medical Billing and Coding Degree

Associate s Degree Programs

Associate’s degrees in medical billing and coding are the most common form of education for medical billers and coders. These are 2-year educational programs that go beyond the career basics of medical billing and coding. In addition to learning all of the basic job skills, you will also have a substantial amount of general education course credits to fulfill. A major benefit to having an associate’s medical billing and coding degree is that you can more easily advance your education in the future. If you should decide to pursue a bachelor’s or a master’s degree later, the credits that you earned for your associate’s will apply toward those degrees. Medical billing and coding associate’s degrees can be found at career and community colleges.

Bachelor s Degree Programs

Bachelor’s degrees in medical billing and coding are 4-year programs that cover a substantial amount of general education and advanced background knowledge in addition to the basic medical billing and coding job skills. Other bachelor’s degree programs can be helpful in entering this field as well. Many people have used bachelor’s degrees in health information management or health care administration to enter the medical billing and coding field. Like associate’s degrees, bachelor’s medical billing and coding degree programs give you a much broader educational background. They can also afford you opportunities to advance into management positions in the future. Medical billing and coding bachelor’s degrees are offered by universities and colleges.

Before You Enroll in a Degree Program

Whether you decide on an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, or a certificate or diploma program, you must make sure the program is accredited. This is especially true if you plan to take the highly recommended step of becoming certified later. The two agencies responsible for accrediting these programs are the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Alternatively, a school is still reputable if it is accredited by one of the six regional accreditation agencies.

Medical Billing and Coding Certification and Requirements

Medical billing and coding professionals are tasked with ensuring that payment requests made to insurance companies are accurate and complete. Because they have the financial well-being of health care facilities in their hands, it’s imperative for these workers to receive extensive, quality training. To help ensure that they are hiring knowledgeable workers, many organizations require that billing and coding employees receive a professional certification. There are a number of certifications available for these workers, some of which are offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Procedural Coders (AAPC). The requirements for certifications generally include working in the field for a certain amount of time, completing continuing education courses, or passing an examination.

Although medical coding and billing can be done by the same person, they are actually two distinct functions, and professionals can obtain a certification for each one. Coding certifications — such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Professional Coder-Hospital Outpatient (CPC-H) offered by the AAPC — test on knowledge of medical codes for diagnoses and procedures, reimbursement guidelines, medical terminology and what to do when a claim is denied.

Similarly, billing certifications like the Certified Professional Biller (CPB), allows professionals to demonstrate their knowledge about types of insurance plans, the life cycle of a medical bill, and how to follow up on a medical claim.

Educational requirements for medical billing and coding

To embark on a career in medical billing and coding. candidates are required to complete a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and are encouraged to take courses in health, math, biology, and computer science. After graduation, they may be required to obtain an associate degree or a postsecondary certificate that may take about one year to complete. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov), some employers also require that employees earn a professional certification in addition to a billing and coding degree.

Benefits of billing and coding certification

Certification may be a condition to gain employment in some cases, but it may also help some workers advance in their careers and gain the potential to boost their salaries. According to a survey conducted by AAPC, medical coders and billers who earn a professional certification generally make 20 percent more than those who do not.

Barry University’s Certified Billing & Coding Specialist program is a short-term, low-cost program that will provide you with an entry-level knowledge of the field of medical coding and billing, with an emphasis on preparing you for the NHA’s Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS).

On the last day of this 10-week, 60-hour program you will take the CBCS certification exam sponsored by the National Health career Association (NHA) in your classroom. You will have also acquired the knowledge level necessary to challenge other entry-level medical coding certification exams, such as the CCA certification examination sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), should you choose to do so independently.

Both of these certification exams consist of questions on administrative procedures for medical billing and insurance claim processing, submitting, tracing, appealing, and transmitting billing claims for today’s full range of health plans.

Employment Outlook: “Employment of medical coders and health information technicians is expected to increase by 21 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average of all occupations…An aging population will need more medical tests, treatments, and procedures…Additional records, coupled with widespread use of electronic health records by all types of healthcare providers, should lead to an increased need for technicians to organize and manage the associated information in all areas of the healthcare industry.” Dept. of Labor Statistics, D.C.

Online Classes for Medical Billing and Coding

With the busy schedules and the active lives most of us lead, online education has become a very popular way to earn a degree in health care professions. Many aspiring medical professionals find promising opportunities at the intersection of online classes and medical billing and coding, a career that offers the options of working in a medical facility or at home.

How Do Online Classes Work?

Online classes are taught through distance learning. All you really need is a computer and Internet access. As an online student, you ll learn through interactive videos, reading materials, lectures, and DVDs. Although an online program may require occasional class participation in which you ll have to be online at a certain time, they usually allow you to do work at your convenience. The flexibility of doing schoolwork based on your schedule is what usually makes online classes such a popular option.

Will Online Classes Prepare Me for Certification?

Medically billing and coding classes generally prepare you for certification in the same way as on-campus programs. The two most commonly used organizations that offer certification for medical coders and billers are the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Each of these organizations has different certification requirements. The AHIMA recommends that you complete an AHIMA-accredited program but does not require it. All you have to do is pass the exam.

The AAPC requires candidates to have some work experience to take the coding certification exam but does not require this for the billing exam. The organization offers an apprentice status that allows you to gain on-the-job training and still take the certification exams. The AAPC also offers an online medical billing and coding program on their website, ensuring that its students receive the training necessary to prepare them for certification.

How Do I Choose a Training Program?

When choosing online medical billing and coding classes, the most important consideration is choosing classes that will prepare you for this career and the certification exam. Being hired as a medical billing and coding specialist is often more contingent on having certification than completing any specific program.

Although finding online classes or programs that are AAPC- or AHIMA-accredited is not a necessity, it is often recommended. Both the AAPC and the AHIMA offer information on what s on their respective certification exams, so it would be beneficial to research this when choosing any specific online classes.

What are the Time and Financial Commitments?

Online classes are often chosen by people who have busy schedules and can t take classes at conventional times. The time it takes to complete the classes depends on the time you re willing to commit to your studies. Online billing and coding classes are generally less expensive those taken in a traditional college setting. They also allow you to take individual classes. The only downside is that online classes may not be eligible for financial aid.

How Can I Tell if a Medical Billing and Coding School is Accredited?

Deciding to go back to school for medical billing and coding can be a great career opportunity. But before selecting a school to attend, it is important to verify that the institution is properly accredited. Without this, your degree might not provide you the value you need to progress in your medical billing and coding career. Accreditation means your school meets certain standards, as do your fellow students. It is also a condition a school must meet in order for its students to have access to federal financial aid options and the ability to transfer credits to another institution.

Accredited medical billing and coding schools have to meet certain standards, both in their programs of study and in the quality of their students performance. For both the schools and the students, this ensures that the medical billing and coding program is consistently striving to improve and keep up with changes in the industry. Additionally, for future employers, a degree from an accredited school means that they can expect a certain caliber of employee: someone who will be up-to-date on the latest in electronic health records and all other aspects of medical billing and coding.

National Organizations Relevant to Billers and Coders

Two nationally known accreditation organizations that focus on medical billing and coding include: the Commission of Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). which accredits general programs, including medical billing and coding, and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). which provides certification for medical coders, and lists courses that prepare students for credentialing exams. Accredited medical billing and coding schools should have one or both of these organizations listed on their website or printed information. However, always be sure to cross-reference the schools claims with the actual organization s records to verify accreditation.

Regional Agencies That Grant Institutional Accreditation

In addition to the two national organizations mentioned above, six regional agencies accredit higher education institutions as a whole (not merely their medical billing and coding programs). They are:

  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA)
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NASC)
  • Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NASC)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
