What do I need to do in order to become a certified nurse aide (CNA)?
You will hold the title certified nurse aide and be allowed to work in the state of Texas when:

  • You graduate from a state-approved nurse aide training program, and pass the state evaluation test OR
  • You hold a nurse aide certification from another state and obtain certification in the state of Texas by waiver or reciprocity.

What is the Nurse Aide Registry?
The State of Texas maintains an official record of all certified nurse assistants qualified to provide patient care services in nursing facilities and licensed by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. This record is called the Texas Nurse Aide Registry.

How can I qualify for reciprocity?
You can qualify for reciprocity if you are currently on the nurse aide registry in another state that is in compliance with applicable federal laws and you complete the necessary DADS-required documentation.

What does the state exam for nurse aide certification consist of?
The examination has two parts:

  1. Testing of your hands-on, client care skills. This part includes demonstrating five randomly selected nurse aide skills.
  2. Testing of nurse aide concepts and knowledge. This part of the exam includes answering 60 multiple choice questions.

How many hours of instruction are required by law to complete a CNA course?

  1. After July 1, 1989, you successfully completed the training portion of an approved NATCEP in any state and have not completed the CEP test or been placed on the registry in another state.
  2. After July 1, 1989, you successfully completed military training of 100 hours or more which is equivalent to civilian nurse aide training.
  3. After July 1, 1989, you successfully completed a state-accredited registered nurse (RN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) school but were not licensed as an RN or LVN in Texas or have not held a nurse license that has been revoked.
  4. You are currently a nursing student in any state and are able to provide basic nursing skills.

Special Education Teaching Programs

Students enrolled in special education have the opportunity to student teach in public schools, intermediate units, approved private schools, preschools, state centers, adjudicated environments and hospitals. Student teaching assignments are located within seven select counties neighboring Bloomsburg University.

Intensive pre-student teaching experiences are also available through advanced sequence coursework and professional development schools. To meet Pennsylvania teacher certification requirements, special education majors must have six credits of:

  • College level mathematics
  • College level English comprised of composition and literature

Requirements for the major include a minimum of 67 semester hours of professional education course work leading up to (prior to) student teaching. One of the first things requested after an analysis is made with a geographic information system (GIS) is a map. This course is an in-depth study of cartographic techniques and methods employed in the creation of maps. Map design and content, design procedures, and production techniques are discussed. The course involves students in color selection, the use of text with maps, and the creation of a visual hierarchy to assist the map reader getting the best out of the map. Thematic and general mapping with the use of GIS data are explored. Cartographic design strategies for both printed maps and web maps are discussed.

Introduction to Spatial Analysis

This course provides a general survey of available quantitative methods for spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Students will learn about the functionality of GIS as an effective tool to model and analyze complex spatial relationships. Fundamental and theoretical components of spatial information for building topological relationships among spatial features and multiple map layers are examined. Quantitative methods for pattern analysis and problem solving are discussed. Models and techniques for surface analysis, such as krigging, smoothing, filtering, inverse distance weighting, and distance-decay, are presented in the context of real world problem solving approaches. Students acquire hands-on experiences with practical applications using ArcGIS Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst, and are prepared for similar applications in Geostatistical Analyst.

GIS database design is an iterative process that includes a conceptual design phase, logical design phase and physical design phase. This course introduces the goals and industry tools available for planning and implementing each phase. Physical design is emphasized using the ESRI Geodatabase. Geodatabase architecture is discussed and a variety of geodatabase behaviors, such as domains, subtypes, annotation, topology and relationship classes, is explored.

GIS Applications Lab

This course explores the tools in ArcGIS to develop and implement GIS projects from conception to finished product. Topics include database creation, data analysis, geodatabase and spatial analysis concepts. Databases from local agencies are integrated into the course for analysis and to provide hands-on practice with real-world applications.

Work Experience

Each certification candidate is required to pass an examination that consists of multiple-choice questions that measure comprehension of the Body of Knowledge.

Computer Delivered – The CSSBB examination is a one-part, 165-question, four-and-a-half-hour exam and is offered in English only. 150 questions are scored and 15 are unscored.

Paper and Pencil – The CSSBB examination is a one-part, 150-question, four-hour exam and is offered in English only.

Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program (DBE/ACDBE) Certification

Virginia Unified Certification Program

The Virginia Unified Certification Program (VUCP) provides “one-stop shopping” certification services to small minority and women owned businesses seeking to participate in the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE) Programs as required by 49 CFR Parts 26 and 23. This service eliminates the need for a small business to obtain DBE or ACDBE certification from multiple agencies in the State. The VUCP includes two certifying agencies; the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (Airports Authority) and the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (DSBSD). Federal DBE or ACDBE certification by either agency is fully accepted throughout Virginia on USDOT funded contracts. There is no difference between DBE and ACDBE certifications performed by the Airports Authority or DSBSD so there is no need to submit an application to both agencies.

DBE Program

The Airport Authority’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program is covered by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) requirements under 49 CFR Part 26. The DBE program requirements in 49 CFR Part 26 provides guidance to the Airports Authority on DBE certification, DBE goal setting, program management and reporting requirements. Examples of DBE opportunities are: construction, architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and supplier/distributor.

ACDBE Program

The Airport Authority’s Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE) program is covered by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) requirements under 49 CFR Part 23, as amended, and Part 26. The ACDBE program requirements define specific types of business activities as concessions and provide guidance to the Airports Authority and other airports on ACDBE certification, ACDBE goal setting, program management and reporting requirements. Only those concessions that have been designated as such in Part 23, Subpart F, are subject to the provisions of the ACDBE concessions program. Examples of DBE concession opportunities are: food and beverage, retail operations, parking management, display advertising, duty free, and car rental.

How Can I Obtain Pathology Assistant Certification?

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) offers certification for pathology assistants at the specialist level (www.ascp.org ). In order to take the certifying examination, you must prove graduation from a school accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) and the completion of a pathology assistant program in the last five years. In addition to certification, you may also be required to attain a license in your practicing state.

What Can I Learn in a Training Program?

As stated by the ASCP, you must complete an accredited bachelor’s degree in pathology assistant program to qualify for certification. Unfortunately, training programs for pathology assistants are limited to in-person sessions, so online options aren’t available. As of April 2016, the NAACLS’s website lists eleven accredited pathology assistant programs, including two in Canada (www.naacls.org ).

These programs may teach you the methods and functions of a pathology assistant. You typically learn how to work with both living and deceased specimens for identification and forensic purposes. Programs may also include instruction on how to perform certain administrative and clerical duties for pathologists. In addition to course requirements, programs usually include a specific number of clinical hours. To enter the clinical portion, you may be required to maintain a high grade point average.

Pathology assistant master’s degree programs are also available. They typically last two years and combine didactic and clinical work. Classes may examine forensic photography, microanatomy, surgical pathology, physiology, histology and embryology.

What Are the Prerequisites?

During your undergraduate studies, consider taking classes in the sciences, including biology, chemistry and some advanced mathematics.
