Best Places to Find Cars Under 500 Dollars

Financial Coach

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to purchase a car for less than 500 dollars. However, you have to do your homework, and consider the risks associated with purchasing a cheap car.

Where to Find Cars Under 500 Dollars

Many sellers of older cars will offer their vehicles for sale for 500 dollars or less. These bargains often have higher mileage and need repairs. However, for someone who has the knowledge and willingness to fix the car, it can be a great bargain. Sellers go to a few of the following places to unload their older vehicles, providing the best opportunity for the buyer to find a cheap car.

Online Auto Marketplaces

You can find an array of automobiles for sale from auto dealers and private sellers via online marketplaces. In most instances, listings contain detailed information about the vehicle, CARFAX reports, photos and contact information for the seller. When conducting the search, only include your zip code and price to get avoid getting zero results.

Craigslist enables you to search for all sorts of vehicles through its database. First, you need to filter by location. Under the ‘for sale’ section, click on cars+trucks and filter according to your criteria. After that, you can filter by price. Beware that owners may not include a significant amount of information in the advertisements, and some ads may even be scams. Contact the advertiser directly to learn more and refrain from conducting monetary transactions online.

Government Auctions

Websites, such as and the US General Services Administration lists cars for sale that are government property and are at a surplus or have been impounded by the police. Auctions start as low as $100, and searches are available by zip code. To locate deals in your area, you will need to subscribe to the site. A free trial is available for three days, and you will be assessed $18.95 per month once the complimentary period expires.

Auto Junkyards

Not only are auto junkyards great for finding deals on hubcaps and wheels, owners of these junkyards will often have bargain cars as well. They may need work, and some vehicles you find may not be running at all. However, if you’re a do-it-yourself mechanic, you can find some real gems by visiting a junkyard. Before you haul the car away, make sure the junkyard owner has a clear title to sell you the vehicle.

Used Car Lots

Owners of used car lots will attend auctions where they often buy older cars that are not in the best condition for less than 500 dollars. While they won’t put much mechanical or reconditioning expense into these low-cost vehicles, if they buy one for 300 dollars, chances are they’ll sell it to you for 500 dollars. Ask questions and check the title before you buy.

Estate Sales

Look in your local newspaper for estate sales. People who inherit large estates, or attorneys who handle large estates, will often sell vehicles at a deal to clear the estate of assets for distribution to the heirs.

Tips for Buying Older Cars

Not every older used car will be a gem. In fact, there are more lemons than gems out there. To protect yourself, follow a few key tips.

Obtain the CARFAX Report

You can obtain a CARFAX report, but only if the vehicle isn’t too old. Older 1950 through 1960 year models won’t have the required 17-digit vehicle identification number or VIN, and CARFAX doesn’t go back that far. If the car is a 1970 model or older, spend the $29.95, and get a CARFAX report.

Conduct a Cost-Benefit Analysis

Expect repairs if you want to buy a cheap car. Unless you’re buying from a helpful relative, most cars as cheap as 500 dollars will need some repairs. Get estimates to see if you can afford to repair the vehicle back to working order.

Request a Mechanical Inspection

Since there is a significant chance that the car will possess mechanical issues, ask the owner if they will allow you to have an inspection done on the vehicle, so you will know what you are getting into before you make the purchase. If they deny your request, simply move on as this is an indicator that they are withholding significant information.

Be Realistic

Be realistic about the car you are buying. If the price tag is 500 dollars, chances are it does need either body or mechanical work, or even new tires. Keep in mind that you may also need to invest enough money into the vehicle for it to pass either a state inspection or an emissions test. However, spending 500 dollars on a car can make for a great project for someone who is willing and able to put the work into it to make the car run like new.

Innovation of the Year: The OPOC Two-Stroke Engine

Internal-combustion engines as we know them were born in 1876 — the year this nation turned one hundred. They’ve gotten bigger and more powerful in the ensuing 130-odd years, but the basic design has remained the same. Until now. Until this briefcase arrived.

Inside this briefcase is the prototype engine that EcoMotors CEO Don Runkle hauls around America. When he arrives for a client meeting, he clicks open the case and shows off his company’s invention: a forty-pound motor that generates up to ten thousand kilowatts of energy. That’s enough to power a home, on a fraction of the fuel that a typical engine would need. Enough to convince many executives that the Engine That Changes Everything may have finally arrived.

Where typical engines have one piston per cylinder, hammering up and down like a fist against a ceiling, the OPOC — which was designed by a former chief powertrain engineer at Volkswagen — has two pistons per cylinder that come together and pull apart like hands clapping. The pistons travel only half as far, meaning they can complete a cycle twice as fast, which lets OPOC generate twice the power of an equivalent standard engine — the same power in a package half the size. Further innovations in fuel delivery and exhaust and the innate efficiency advantages of the two-stroke cycle mean the system offers, conservatively, 50 percent reduction in fuel usage with no reduction in power, no increase in emissions, weight savings of 50 percent, and cost savings of 20 percent.

Aviation company Eurocopter is pursuing a diesel version that would be the most fuel-efficient helicopter engine ever. And Runkle and EcoMotors are aiming to have a vehicular OPOC ready for commercial production by 2013. It’s an audacious goal, but one they’ve gotten help with: In July, seeing the potential for OPOC to change the world (and be a successful business), Bill Gates and Khosla Ventures gave $23.5 million to support final engineering. —Tim Heffernan

Best electric cars for kids in 2015-2016

Best electric car for kids reviews

Electric cars for kids – What to look for:

When you’re a parent who wants to give their child a perfect way to experience being an adult, getting one of the top ten electric cars for kids will surely help you earn brownie points from your precious one. Imagine the big grin and youthful delight you’ll get treated to when you present your child with a new electric car for kids on their birthday.

    Model and Features

The models of highest rated electric cars for kids deserve a showroom just like adult cars do. It helps to have a pretty good idea what type you will be getting. Will it be outdoor or indoor type? The most popular units are outdoor types since they really give that feeling of freedom that a child deserves. Road cars have replicas too, and these include Porsches, Aston Martins, BMWs, Ferraris, Audi TTs and plenty more. Stylish and chic, such cars can give plenty of backyard play. Rugged models include Jeeps, Hummers or Ford Mustangs. Your child will surely enjoy being able to use forward and reverse gears, a side view mirror, a key start, a foot accelerator, a car horn, steering and fully working lights on his car, so check out models that carry those features. The decals, if any, should be as authentic as possible.

    Safety provisions

The best play car for the money should incorporate safety features in the package. Even if your child just uses the electric car in your backyard, sudden bumps may cause him to topple from his seat. Teach him about safety this early by ensuring that the toy car has a seat belt. Make sure that the seats are well attached to their bases. The seat should enable your child to see where he’s going, built at just the right height. The components of the toy car should carry no toxic paint, sharp edges or corners. Remember that the unit is still pretty much a toy, so it should be manufactured under the same standards that all children’s toys are made. Most importantly, the product should include a fully functional parental remote control in order to ensure guidance and safe play at all times.

Which electric car for kids is the best? Ask any child that question and battery life is sure to come up one way or the other. Ideally, the car should give around 2 hours of driving on flat terrain on the average. That’s for a single charge. It is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation on charging the car’s battery. The car’s craftsmanship should be sturdy for a toy of this type. Any assembly to be done must be minimal at most. The car itself should not require too much maintenance when used according to manufacturer’s recommendations and kept in good condition. A warranty would be nice, as the cost of replacing parts can be quite expensive. The motor or battery is the element that generally requires maintenance, repair or replacement.

    Best convertible cars

Roadster, cabriolet or spider, we explore the best convertibles on sale now

The roof of a car is pretty important, especially in Britain – it keeps the inevitable bad weather out and makes sure the body stays rigid as you press on down a twisty road in the countryside. So why are people in the UK so in love with convertible cars?

Well, while a car with a fixed roof is sensible and practical, one without is an indugance: good-looking, fun to drive and perfect on a summer’s day.

Convertible cars tend to make the most sense in the UK, as strange as it might seem – the climate here means it’s often just about warm enough to get the roof down, rather than being so hot that air-conditioning is needed.

There are two main types of convertible: ones that are built from the ground up to be roofless, and versions of existing models that have had the hard top chopped off and a complex folding canvas or metal roof fixed in its place.

The latest crop of convertible models is better than ever. Cars without a roof need extra strength in the body to make up for the rigidity that is lost from not having a fixed roof. This means they tend to be heavier and not as good to drive – but modern convertibles are so well made that you can hardly tell the difference. Plus, cars like the Mazda MX-5 that were built to be a roadster can be a real joy to drive.

You can grab a bargain convertible in the form of a city car – even if these economical, urban runabouts do blur the line between a proper convertible hood and a glorified sunroof.

Beyond that, the choice expands. There are family-sized cars with traditional lightweight multi-skinned fabric roofs offering eerily good noise insulation or full folding hard-tops claiming a best-of-both-worlds compromise. Depending on the size of these models, usable rear seats and a decent boot are now a very real possibility for convertibles.

The classic two-seater roadster is also in rude health, from the iconic Mazda MX-5 to the epic Jaguar F-Type. And the convertible market extends upwards further, to supercars like the McLaren 650S Spider promising huge performance and luxurious machines like Bentley’s Continental GTC that afford those with the cash an unforgettable way to see and be seen.

Amid all this convertible car choice, we’ve pinpointed our top 10 best convertible cars currently on the market. Hold on to your hats and click the links below to find out what made the list…
