DirecTV – Get Rid of Cable – Commercials #commercial #cable #tv

You can help confirm this entry by contributing facts, media, and other evidence of notability and mutation.

DirecTV’s “Get Rid of Cable” Commercials are a series of TV advertisements for the American satellite TV company illustrating various hypothetical scenarios that lead to regrettable misfortunes as a result of cable TV service outage. Due to their far-fetched and highly entertaining premises, the ad campaign spawned quite a few amateur parodies on YouTube since its launch in 2012.

In early January 2012, DirecTV launched a new advertising campaign dubbed “Get Rid of Cable.” Created by New York-based ad agency Grey New York, the first three commercials for the satellite TV company poke fun at some of the most common frustrations experienced by cable TV subscribers, such as dealing with the customer service and increasing price of cable bills, while encouraging the viewers to switch to DirecTV in order to avoid the hassle altogether.

On January 3rd, the first installment of the series titled “Don’t Wake Up in a Roadside Ditch” was uploaded to The DirecTV YouTube channel, garnering over a million views within 18 months. On January 22nd, the earliest known parody of the commercial was uploaded by YouTuber KartoonManagement in a video titled “Don’t Get Anally Raped.”

Throughout January 2012, the launch of DirecTV’s ad campaign was met by positive reviews from the industry news sites AdWeek and Fierce Cable. Then on March 2nd, DirecTV released a new commercial titled “Platoon” (shown below), wherein a frustrated cable TV subscriber winds up at a bar during happy hours and encounters Charlie Sheen at a Turkish bathhouse.

In the following months, numerous amateur sketch videos parodying DirecTV’s commercials surfaced on YouTube [7]. as well as multi-pane image macros illustrating similar scenarios on Tumblr [8] and Cheezburger. [9] As of July 2013, a YouTube search for “DirecTV commercial parody” yields approximately 3,500 videos.

You might want to watch this 8-minute video created by the Consumer Electronics Association

Getting the most from America’s New High-Definition Television System is simple and inexpensive. You just need an antenna for sets made after 2007, and a Converter Box if you have an older TV. No need to get cable, satellite or a new TV to enjoy America’s DTV Channels.

“Multicasting” allows stations to broadcast up to six new channels in the space of their old one. Channel 9, for instance, is now DTV channel 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, etc. Cable and satellite would have you believe they carry most of these new channels, but they don’t.

Cable and satellite strip and leave out most broadcast channels to save space for other $ervice$. To get genuine HDTV just add an antenna and converter to your existing setup. You’ll be amazed how many HDTV channels you can tune, and how much better everything looks over-the-air!

Find the keys to complete your HDTV System!

Denver Area HDTV Channels
All of these new channels, and many more, are Free. No cable or satellite is needed for any of them. Just select an Antenna, using the information below, to receive crystal clear HDTV signals Free in the Denver, Colorado Springs, Cheyenne Area.

Antenna Selection Guide
To find the perfect antenna, first list the RF Channels which you want to watch. The CEA. Consumer Electronics Association, and NAB. National Association of Broadcasters, created the AntennaWeb to help you with the rest. Free! An example of how it works is presented below.

NOTE that all TV stations are transmitting on different channels now. To avoid confusion, however, the new tuners and converter boxes allow a station to keep its old channel number while automatically switching you to its new RF Channel. Some of the new RF Channels are VHF but most are UHF.

RF Channels on your list numbered less than 14 are VHF. They need a broader antenna than UHF channels; the ones numbered 14 and up. Since HDTV is 91% UHF, you probably won’t need to use a broad antenna.

Most need an Indoor Antenna. They work just fine with older TVs using a converter box, and with all new TVs. You’ll need to use an Outdoor Antenna if you’re more than 15 miles from stations’ towers, but most towers are clustered near town and are very powerful.

We’ll use a site near Tampa, Florida
Press then Press
“Click Here to Start,” then Enter the
ZIP Code 33772 and Press “Submit”

A Station Tower Map will appear beside a list, as shown below. The strongest stations are at the top. Record the RF channels, and Antenna Color Codes, of the stations you want to watch. You’ll need that information to select the proper Antenna .
To verify this Map and List. select using the same Zip Code, to get the following.

What’s important is to get-a-feel for the distances and directions to desirable stations’ towers (under “Dist” and “Azimuth” above). Let’s select CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC and PBS Networks, all of which are farther than 15 miles away. We’ll need to use an Outdoor Antenna to receive them. Fortunately, station towers are clustered in most cities – East of us in our example.

Antenna Color Codes
Color Codes represent an antenna’s reception strength. Within 15 miles of stations an Indoor Antenna can be used (in the Yellow, Green and Light Green Zones). Farther away you’ll need to use an Outdoor Antenna. Our Example calls for color codes blue and violet. The stronger violet type will work for both. Since four of our desirable stations’ RF channels are VHF (all but ABC are less than 14), we’ll need a broad UHF/VHF antenna.

Thermoplastic Elastomers #tpe #cable

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) combine the good processing properties of plastics with the elastomer properties that are so important for product developers and designers. Thermoplastic elastomers consist of thermoplastic end blocks and an elastic midblock. As regards their structure and behaviour, they belong to a material class that is positioned between plastics (thermoplastics) and rubber (elastomer) and have gradually been developed into a material class of their own.

They enhance products and enable processors to position their products ahead of those of their competitors. In addition, TPEs also fulfil technical functions that have up to now only been available with elastomers. The use of TPEs does not only offer a range of product advantages but also has significant commercial benefits for processors. Similar to thermoplastics, TPEs become plastic when heated and elastic when cooled down again. In elastomers, this behaviour is due to chemical cross-linking. In TPEs, it is the result of physical cross-linking, and any changes in behaviour caused by heating are reversible. When the material is cooled down, new cross-links are established, which bond the elastic blocks into rigid three-dimensional networks. This means that TPEs show elastic properties that are similar to those of elastomers, while allowing for repeat deformation and recovery as known from thermoplastics. Thermoplastic elastomers are thus free-flowing and formable

The use of TPEs offers a number of key advantages:

  • Easy thermoplastic processing
  • Short cycle times
  • Low energy consumption
  • Thermal stability, providing large processing window
  • Multi-component processing and thus reduced assembly costs
  • Combination of two materials (hard-soft composite)
  • 100% recyclable
  • Versatile dying options, including colour effects for more advanced design

A TPE based on styrene block copolymers are commonly referred to as a TPS. TPS can be further classified in SEBS, SBS, SEPS and SEPS-V. KRAIBURG TPE produces mainly SEBS (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) compounds.
In this material, styrene end blocks are attached to an elastic segment (e.g. ethylene-butylene). SEBSs are used in adhesives such as hot-melts, or as the soft component in 2C injection moulding materials.

Polymers are classified in four groups, based on their network structure: thermoplastics, elastomers, duromers and thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) Thermoplastics consist of long linear one-dimensional polymer chains that are held together by weak physical forces such as intermolecular interactions. When exposed to heat or shear forces, they become free-flowing and formable. When cooled down, the material becomes again rigid. As this process is purely physical, it can be repeated at any time and as often as necessary (example: polypropylene).Duromers are tightly cross-linked polymers that do not melt under high temperature and retain their network structure. At room temperature, they are hard and brittle (example: epoxy resin).Elastomers, often referred to as rubbers, are chemically cross-linked and extremely elastic. They are not formable after vulcanisation. The macro-molecules are cross-linked and coiled. The material can be temporarily deformed by compression and stress forces and returns to its original structure as soon as the forces are no more applied (example: NR).Thermoplastic elastomers consist of thermoplastic end blocks (e.g. polystyrene ) and an elastic midblock (e.g. ethylene-butylene). This makes the material free-flowing and formable. When the material is cooled down, physical cross-links are established, which bond the elastic blocks into rigid three-dimensional networks. Thermoplastic elastomers thus have the properties of elastomers but can be processed in the same way as thermoplastics.

TPEs are used in a versatile range of applications in various sectors, meeting the industry-specific requirements. They are for example used for control elements in car interiors. for exterior window trims and “under-the hood” seals. TPEs are also found in industrial products such as tool handles and cable sheathing. In consumer goods, TPEs are used in toys, sports equipment, packaging and hygiene products such as toothbrushes and razors. For medical applications, compounds that meet particularly stringent requirements have been developed. Medical TPE products include drip chambers, seals and medical hoses.

Schafer: There’s a reason for bad service from cable companies

It s not really accurate to say the state of Washington just sued Comcast for bad customer service.

Sure, there were stomach-churning descriptions of terrible things the company did to its customers, but the state s formal complaint didn t describe long hold times when calling for technical support or failing to show up for service calls.

Instead, the state is seeking about $100 million in restitution and civil penalties for unfair and deceptive acts and practices. In fact, it wrote, Comcast allegedly performed at least 1.8 million such unfair and deceptive acts.

This news can t be any surprise for Comcast customers in the Twin Cities, where it s the market leader in broadband internet and cable TV. The company finished at No. 277 in the latest Temkin Customer Service ratings of major U.S. companies. That was dead last.

Some Twin Cities consumers may consider themselves lucky not to use Comcast, but Charter Communications came in at 267 for internet service and 273 for TV on that same ranking. CenturyLink wasn t on the 2016 edition, but Temkin ranked it last year at No. 268.

This was just one company s rankings. But it doesn t matter which publisher produces them, year after year it s the cable TV and internet providers populating the bottom of the list. So delivering bad service is not just Comcast s problem, it s a whole industry s problem.

It s a head scratcher just why this happens; these companies are run by accomplished business people who certainly know they get pounded in every customer service ranking. Looking closer, though, it s clear they understand something about their businesses we don t, and that s how little providing good customer service really matters.

The key to understanding why is a concept called switching costs. Like it sounds, these are the costs in time and money it takes to find a new provider. There are some markets where switching really does cost a lot; broadband is one of them.

One classic cost is overcoming a compatibility problem. To pick an absurd example, it might be that only a Ford pickup fits snugly in the garage, and the new Toyota and Chevy models don t. There are also transaction costs, like the fee the wireless phone service providers charge for ending a contract early.

The other common switching costs are harder to quantify, like putting a dollar value on the fear of the unknown that causes a 20-year user of Windows computers to balk at switching to an Apple MacBook. If the consumer plunges ahead and buys an Apple, there are the costs of learning how to use it.

What are the switching costs in cable TV and internet access? Well, for starters, the existing provider s name probably appears in the homeowner s personal e-mail address. It s also not easy, with bundled services and tiered pricing, to decide if a competitor offers a better deal.

Fear of change comes into play too, including the completely rational fear that a new provider s service will be even worse. And no one looks forward to the home visit for new equipment to be installed, followed by the period of not quite knowing how to use it.

Books have been written to advise CEOs on the best option for winning in a market with high customer switching costs. What the cable and internet providers have commonly tried is using introductory cheap prices to land a customer and then counting on the switching costs to keep them. Then they can ratchet up the monthly charges.

New channels are added and new services are added that may include tossing residential phone service into a bundle and the perceived switching costs go up, too.

These high switching costs should make us a little suspicious of the industry s terrible customer service scores, explained George John, marketing professor at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Researchers have found that if consumers feel stuck, they are more likely to be dissatisfied with a service, he said, even if it may not be that bad.

Don t get the idea that he s an industry defender. To any objective person, the quality of cable services have been going down, and the prices have been going up, he said.

How cable TV and broadband service could be as bad as it is has long puzzled me. My household is now on the second go-round with Comcast after trying CenturyLink, and there s really been nothing else to compare to the experience of dealing with these two.

There are actually pretty good examples of businesses that have to compete in markets with low switching costs. Often, the way they measure customer service, any score other than a 10 is considered a failure. These businesses owners know anything less than perfect just may lead to a lost customer, and a bad experience clearly will.

In my recent experience, the service department at Borton Volvo of Golden Valley deserved its 10 out of a 10 score. Champion Plumbing of Eagan just got a 10, too.

Getting 10s across the board might be ambitious for Comcast. But even at Comcast, getting sued by a major state for $100 million has to be considered a failure. Both Comcast and Charter have solemnly pledged to provide better service.

There s plenty of reason to remain skeptical, according to Colin Shaw, author and founder of a Florida-based consulting firm called Beyond Philosophy that helps companies improve their customers experience. These firms are indeed run by savvy executives, he said, but what they spend most of their time doing is making investments and tweaking operations to cut costs.

I spent 18 years of my life working for telecoms, and all of those organizations talk about providing a great customer experience, he said. But none of them do it. And the honest answer is that none of them care enough for it to happen.
