But Americans are buying more new cars nowadays than any time in history, and with more helpful tools at your disposal every day, it’s easier than ever to get a good deal… you just have to know where to look.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the five most helpful apps, websites, and online tools for buying a car, whether you choose to go new, used, or lease. TrueCar

By now, you’ve probably seen one of TrueCar’s many commercials, so you may be familiar with how it works, but if not, here’s a refresher: go to TrueCar’s website to build the right car for you, check out the prices that other customers paid for the same or similar cars, and head to the dealership armed with a full pricing report to get the best possible deal on your new car. Simple, right? That’s why it’s been so popular in recent years.

TrueCar also offers a slick mobile app if you’re on the go or just want to see what kind of a deal you can get on the slick red sports car right in front of you at the lot.

Carjojo

You may have never heard of Carjojo, but if you’re in the market for a new car, you’ll certainly want to hear about it.

According to Peter Levy, founder of Carjojo: We collect data on almost every individual new car currently for sale in the United States, such as the length of time a car’s been on a dealer’s lot, how ‘bloated’ is the dealer’s inventory, and the sales patterns at that car’s dealership, to calculate the lowest price… a dealership will most likely accept for any car it’s selling. Our approach delivers an average of greater than $1,300 below other car-buying sites’ prices, a savings we’ve confirmed by tracking actual car purchases made by Carjojo customers.

While Carjojo’s track record is still largely unproven, a savings of $1,300 is hard to argue with. Their full negotiation service will set you back $199, but it may be well worth the cost if you’re truly haggling-averse.

Kelley Blue Book

Newfangled apps and fancy features aside, sometimes its best to go with what’s known, and as far as putting a price on the true value of a new or used car is concerned, there’s no bigger name in the business than Kelley Blue Book. Their online pricing tool allows you to see exactly what you should be paying for the car you’re looking for, down to the trim level, optional extras, even paint color.

Be aware that if the model you’re looking for is too new, too low-volume, or otherwise doesn’t have a long purchase history, KBB won’t be able to provide a Fair Purchase Price, but that’s where the other sites on this list may come in handy.

CarMax

Buying used is an increasingly appealing option for millions of car buyers, if not just for the money you’ll save. Many cars lose value the second they leave a dealer lot, so if you’re not leasing or don’t want to incur a multi-year investment that inherently loses value, it may be smart to consider opting for a secondhand ride.

Of course, the used car market can be a minefield of bad deals and painful negotiating. Thankfully, CarMax, and their increasing arsenal of nationwide used car lots, has taken haggling out of the equation, and given you as many stress-free buying options as possible, from a restructured warranty to up to 7 days to consider your price offer on the car you want. They’ll even ship a car you like across the country for you from one of their other dealerships… for the right price, of course.

Insurify

When it’s all said and done and you’ve got the new or used car of your dreams, there’s still one very important – and often costly – factor to consider: car insurance. As stressful as the car buying process can be, the insurance searching process can be equally as hair-pulling, with seemingly hundreds of different companies all vying for your attention. Even with price comparison tools from companies like Progressive and free, instantaneous quotes with a minimum of information necessary, it can be tough to tell when you’re getting swindled.

Most car buyers don’t do more than the most perfunctory test drive of new or used cars. But with so much new technology and features in today’s cars and trucks, a thorough test drive is more important than ever.

According to a survey by Cox Automotive only 32 percent of consumers know the exact vehicle they want when they start car shopping. But 55 percent test drive only one vehicle — the one they end up purchasing. You’re likely to try on more than one pair of shoes or hat, even when they have your size and you know what it is.

How To Buy A Car: Start With Some Patience

Ron Montoya with Edmunds.com, the car buying website, says a lot of people think, ” ‘Hey, this car’s new. I’m driving an old car. I don’t really need to drive this new car. Anything is going to be better than what I’m currently driving.’ So they don’t test-drive it.”

But they should. The average car on the road is over 10 years old. Technology has changed significantly in the last decade, so many of the features on that new vehicle may be unfamiliar. Things such as drive assist, lane keeping, and turn assist weren’t around just a few years ago.

“If you want a certain package, if you want a certain engine, make sure you drive that one and don’t drive something else just because it’s closer to the lot or it can be a quicker test drive,” Montoya says. “You want to make sure that it’s the car you want, because that’s the car you’re going to buy. You’re going to be spending a lot of money on it.”

While driving the car, pay attention to things like how the steering feels in your hands, how the vehicle feels as it’s turning and how the brakes respond, says Jean Jennings with Jean Knows Cars. “Your hands, your feet and your butt — those are the things that are most important,” she says.

Jennings, who was the longtime editor of Automobile magazine, says most importantly, you should enjoy the experience: “The first person who knocks your joy down one tiny bit, walk out! How dare they! It’s your money and your joy. If you’re going to spend that kind of money, why would you deal with anyone who gives you any pain at all? Am I right?”

Jennings is right. Driving a car should not be painful. Here’s some ways to ease the pain.

Tips For The Test Drive

  1. Do your homework. What type of car works for your lifestyle? You might not want a Lamborghini for your 50-mile-round-trip commute.
  2. Schedule an appointment with the car dealer. Actually, schedule several appointments on the same day. This will force you to drive several cars, and it gives you a legitimate excuse to leave the dealership.
  3. Make a list of the cars and features, and check the various consumer websites for the most recent car reviews. Maybe the quality for your beloved brand has slipped.
  4. Pick a day solely for test driving. Don’t buy a car on the same day you test drive. The smell of a new car can have an intoxicating effect.
  5. Make a checklist.Consumer Reports has a checklist of what to look at and think about when test driving.
  6. Bring a buddy and your stuff. Once you walk into a dealership, the goal of the salesman is to get you to buy a car. A friend can keep you sane, and focused. Also, if you have a car seat or a bike, bring that so your know how easy it is to put your cargo and a passenger in your car.
  7. Comfort is key. Can you easily get in and out? Do you actually fit in the seat? Think about your car and body in the future. That red sports car may look cute now, but will you be able to get in and out of it in, say, 5 years?
  8. Bring your own photocopies of your license. To test drive, most dealerships will photocopy your license. Bring your own copy, ask for documents back, and destroy the copies. Identity theft around vehicles is on the rise. According to Autoblog.com, “In the 1990s, around 10 percent of stolen vehicles were obtained by using fraudulent applications. By the 2000s, that percentage had ballooned to 70 to 75 percent.”
  9. Walk around the car. Check for scratches, rust, missing pieces, etc. even with a new car. Vehicles can be damaged during shipping (and test drives) so be wary.
  10. Check the tech. Can you easily pair your phone with Bluetooth? Do you know what all the beeping noises mean?
  11. What’s the fuel? Find out the fuel economy. Does the vehicle take premium gas or need special maintenance?
  12. Drive the car. If most of your commute is on the highway, then drive on the highway. Try to drive over a bumpy road or railroad track to check how it rides.

A new usability report has revealed the top car retail websites in the UK

The UK’s top car buying websites have been detailed in a new report from the Auto Retail Network, which ranks car retail websites in terms of customer usability.

The Website Report 2013 looks at the websites of franchised dealers, independent used car dealers and car manufacturer sites, and ranks them based on criteria endorsed by experts at Google, Auto Trader, autotorq and MotoNovo Finance.

Motorparks topped the list of franchised dealer websites, thanks to strong performance on mobile devices as well as its consumer focus and engaging design. Pentagon came in at close second, thanks to good finance options.

The highest-scoring manufacturer website was Volkswagen, which was found to be easy to use and had extra features over rival sites. Abarth didn’t fare too well in the report, with a broken configurator meaning it came in last place.

Fords of Winsford picked up the prize for the best used car dealer site, with a useful 48-hour ‘reserve a car’ function and online part-ex valuation service.

For franchised dealers, the criteria for judging included the ability to book a service or test drive, a special offers page, social media presence, and a live finance quote. For used car dealer sites, the ability to provide a part-ex valuation was key, along with the speed at which an enquiry was responded to. Finally the manufacturer websites needed to feature a good configuration, the ability to browse features and specs, and a brochure request option.

All of the websites were also tested for usability on mobile phones and tablets. One panel member said: “If I want to visit Amazon or eBay I expect to be able to do everything that I can do on desktop on mobile. Why should auto retail consider itself any different?”
