Qantas frequent flyer program turning into airline’s biggest money spinner

Qantas discovers that loyalty pays off

A once-unwanted Qantas Airways division with no planes or passengers is turning into the Australian airline’s biggest money spinner.

Qantas’ frequent-flyer business, earmarked for sale at least twice, has delivered consistent growth since the airline’s historic loss in 2012. Now chief executive officer Alan Joyce is hatching more ambitious plans for his most profitable unit.

Mr Joyce expects the loyalty program’s earnings to almost double by 2022 as a revitalised Qantas sells air miles to a widening pool of companies, from credit-card operators to supermarkets. The business is so central to Qantas that hitting the profit target could underpin a 50 per cent jump in the stock price, First NZ Capital Securities said this week.

“More frequent-flyers means more retailers and other partners are interested, and that just builds upon itself,” said Adam Fleck, the Sydney-based director of research for Morningstar in Australia and a Qantas frequent flyer. “It ends up being a pretty valuable proposition.”

This is how it works: partners buy Qantas points to reward their own customers for their loyalty. The cost to Qantas of redeeming a point is less than the money it’s sold for, so Qantas makes money on every point. The points are typically redeemed after 24 months, so Qantas generates revenue years in advance. Qantas shares have jumped 45 per cent this year, valuing the company at $8.7 billion.

The upbeat news about Qantas’s frequent-flyer program comes on the same day that Air Canada, which founded its own Aeroplan program in 1984 and then later spun it off, said it was exiting the program to form a new one.

Shares of Canada’s biggest carrier closed up 10.5 per cent at C$16.46, while those of Aimia, which owns and operates Aeroplan, ended down 62.7 per cent at C$3.33 on Thursday

Tail wagging the dog transformation

Almost 12 million members, or every second Australian household, amass points for travel and on purchases of everything from health insurance to wine – even a round of golf. Credit Suisse Group estimates that business is worth almost $4 billion, which is more than the Australian flag-carrier’s international business and double some valuations of the loyalty unit when its sale was contemplated in 2008.

Rather than function solely as a reward for flying on Qantas, the program is close to being the main draw, said Paul Nelson, founder and managing director of Sydney-based consultancy BrandMatters. The appeal of membership is enough to stop many flyers shopping around for cheaper flights, he said.

“They’ve taken something that’s seen as being quite secondary and made it almost primary in decision-making terms,” Mr Nelson said. “It’s gone from the dog wagging the tail to the tail wagging the dog.”

To be sure, the 30-year-old frequent-flyer program is partly hostage to the appeal of Qantas as an airline. The carrier, the world’s third oldest, needs to make available sufficient redemption seats across a range of destinations for customers to see the value in accruing points. While Qantas has bounced back to profit during a three-year turnaround, investors aren’t yet sure how the carrier would handle the next downturn.

At the same time, Qantas has lured millions of frequent flyers in recent years partly because it dominates local rival Virgin Australia Holdings, controlling about two thirds of the domestic market. Virgin’s own loyalty program would appeal more if it could grab more of that share, according to Morningstar.

Juggernaut that feeds itself

It was a different story a decade ago. Amid rising fuel prices and falling profit, Qantas planned to list the loyalty business. But the global financial crisis got in the way.

Joyce revisited the plan in 2014 as the airline posted a record loss of $2.84 billion. Just last week, the 50-year-old, Irish-born executive told investors the loyalty business would never be sold.

Other carriers, including Air Canada in 2005 and two Brazil airlines, opted to reap cash by selling stock in loyalty plans. Aimia, which traces its roots to the Air Canada loyalty listing, was worth almost $C5 billion a decade ago. It now has a market value of $C1.36 billion.

As a business, Qantas Loyalty is an air-miles juggernaut that feeds itself. An online store sells everything from suitcases and sunglasses to shavers. Every new member who signs up and hunts for points creates an incentive for retailers to buy miles from Qantas to reward their own customers.

More than a third of credit-card spending in Australia – which totalled $303 billion in 2016 – is on a Qantas co-branded card, according to the airline, and Qantas plans to grab a bigger share of that market with the release of its own credit card with Citigroup before July.

Frequent flyers earned more than 120 billion points and redeemed 4.9 million flights in 2016. Qantas, known as the Flying Kangaroo, carries around 51 million passengers a year.

Hefty profit margin

Divorced from selling tickets and carrying passengers, Qantas’s loyalty business generates steady income that smooths out the cyclical nature of aviation. At Qantas’s investor day last week, loyalty was the only business for which Qantas gave earnings forecasts.

It’s the airline’s only unit to report consecutive earnings growth since 2012. Underlying operating profit at the business is on course to reach as much as $600 million in 2022, from a record $346 million in the year ended June 2016, Qantas said last week.

The unit’s most recently disclosed first-half profit margin of 24 per cent makes it more than three times as profitable as the international aviation business and almost twice as lucrative as the domestic division.

By 2020, the loyalty division will be Qantas’s biggest contributor to profit, Bank of America said in a report last month. As an added bonus for Qantas, its loyalty memberships lapse after 18 months of no activity and the miles expire.

APU or engine 5 th and if necessary 9 th stage bleed air (hot) is pre-cooled by fan air before entering the pack. Inside the pack, bleed air is cooled by ram air through heat exchangers and an air cycle machine. A water separator collects water condensed by the cooling process to avoid icing.

Series 3/5/6/700 pack output temperatures are independently controlled. Series 4/8/900 packs work to the coldest of the three zones, the two warmer zones are then heated by trim air after the mix manifold. In both series, flight-deck air is taken from before the mix manifold, however series 4/8/900 flight-deck air may also contain trim air.

Cause: Duct temperature has exceeded 88C.
Remedy: Select cooler temp then trip reset.

ZONE TEMP (-4/8/900 only)

Cause: Duct temperature overheat or temp controller failure.
Remedy: Select cooler temp then trip reset.

Unfortunately the 737-800’s have given a lot of nuisance trim air faults, even after incorporation of Service Bulletin 737-21-1133. There is a Flight Crew Operations Manual Bulletin titled Nuisance Zone Temp Light Illuminations on 737-800 Airplanes. The procedure is as follows:

After landing, prior to first power transfer:
Trim Air Switch . OFF
Air Conditioning System . ____Pack(s), BLEEDS ON

Prior to takeoff, after last power transfer:
Trim Air Switch . ON

Cabin temperature sensor

The cabin temperature sensor is behind the small grill located just over the overhead locker on the stbd side at approximately row 3. This is why you get the burning smell of a duct overheat in the cabin when you have the fwd doors open on a cold day and the wind blowing icy air through the cabin. On such a day it is better to use the temperature controls in manual to avoid this.

Also if the cabin temperature is not regulating well in flight, you should have an engineer clean the foam air filter behind this grill. The flightdeck temperature sensor is near the dome light.

Chief of Maintenance Washington DC

Aviation IT Analyst New York

Just wanted to reach out and let you know that your FSE did a fantastic job in supporting our aircraft with a recent internet issue. Anytime we have needed support he has been willing to drive to the home base as soon as possible. I have really enjoyed working with him.

Pilot/Maintenance Manager California

It’s hard to find good service in our industry these days but what you provided us on the weekend was above and beyond anything I have seen for some time. The service we have received from SD since enrollment has been exemplary, just sorry we hadn’t done it sooner.

Engineering Manager Western Australia

You provide outstanding support to us and the crews aboard the aircraft when they call with an issue during their missions…always quick to respond and provide details of the issue and any possible fix actions that are available at the time. This kind of support is imperative when supporting our fleet, or the other aircraft we have stationed at other sites throughout the continental US and OCONUS.

Field Engineer Maryland

I would like to just thank you and your very professional team for the great work they have done in setting us up and the continued service support and analysis of issues we have had. It is truly an honor to have your company and team associated with our company.

Accountable Executive United Arab Emirates

We were not able to get a customer’s CSA signed until two days prior to departure and the SD team worked hard to ensure that the activation would meet the customer’s schedule, staying with me into the evening. This kind of service is what has made you the leaders in the industry. I can tell you that when pressed for my professional opinion the only name I recommend is Satcom Direct.

Avionics Technical Rep Kalamazoo, MI

I had an extremely busy day getting four aircraft ready prior to leaving for Barcelona. SD took care of the satellite table update and allowed me to take care of everything else. SD got me the paperwork I needed even after their shift had finished. This allowed me to test it with the crew prior to their departure. Everything worked and the execs never missed a beat. That’s what makes your company and why I trust SD for AOG.

Avionics Manager Dallas, TX

I learned a lot, from the best prepared and presented satcom training I have experienced. The trainer’s breadth of knowledge of all facets of the topic is formidable.

Technical Development Manager Australia

Thank you all so much again for the excellent workshop which you folks hosted in Dubai – I am constantly blown away at the level of professionalism of all of your staff members. Satcom Direct is an incredible service provider.

Lead Pilot Dubai

Without hesitation SD traveled to our location, quickly diagnosed the issue and was able return the SATCOM system to proper operation. SD also supported us on our out-going test flight, ensuring all SATCOM voice and data systems were at optimum performance. Without SD, I’m afraid we would have missed our out date and an important trip.

Aircraft Maintenance Supervisor East Granby, CT

I simply wanted to make you aware how impressed we have been with the service received from your Field Service Engineer. He has followed through on every request and always makes himself available to us on incredibly short notice. With his thorough understanding of the systems coupled with his polite and professional demeanor; we are just genuinely impressed. This has further confirmed us making the correct choice when previously deciding between Satcom and Arinc as a service provider.

What our clients are saying

The majority of our students come from ASO. Having worked with helicopter flight schools across the nation, I always recommend a listing with Aviation Schools Online as the first step in any flight school marketing plan. With the rising cost of website design, optimization and monthly fees, it is very difficult to keep up with the demands of the search engine game. Aviation Schools Online and their affiliates have allowed us to keep in plain sight of our potential customers. We have been working with ASO since 2007, now and still, despite our diverse marketing plan, the majority of our students come from ASO.

At Pan Am International Flight Academy, (ASO) very quickly became our most productive source of sales leads. Not only did they generate the most leads each month, they were high-quality and converted well. Conversion rates were favorable compared to traditional print media, but the cost per lead and cost per student were exponentially less expensive. In other words, an ASO lead costs less and converts just as often as a lead from other sources.

Flightdocs new Enterprise Inventory Platform Provides Aircraft Operators with Mobile Solution

Flightdocs Enterprise Inventory Platform includes an iPad app, giving access to aircraft maintenance inventory and purchasing data from anywhere.

Without the need for a dedicated barcode scanner and desktop computer to scan barcodes, the Flightdocs Enterprise Inventory iPad application provides a much easier way to identify, locate and utilize components from inventory.

Fort Myers, Florida (PRWEB) October 20, 2014

Flightdocs Inc. announces the release of its Enterprise Inventory Platform, the first module of its new Flightdocs Enterprise Suite of aviation data-management solutions. This new tool for web and mobile-based users allows aviation mechanics and operations personnel to track inventory, requests for repairs, parts requisition requests, purchase orders and shipping information.

Enterprise Inventory gives customers a complete view of the purchasing and parts management process, in real time, allowing for real-time updates and access to orders, component data, documentation and status.

Flightdocs will release Enterprise Inventory at the 2014 National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention Exhibition at Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. Guests can experience the web- and iPad-enabled inventory tool at Booth #4828 during the three-day trade show.

The new platform comes with an iPad application, giving access to aircraft maintenance inventory and purchasing data from anywhere. Mechanics can send instant requests for aircraft parts needed to carry out maintenance, and managers are able to process approvals, purchase orders and allocations of parts to the locations requested.

This aviation inventory management software is anticipated to greatly reduce inefficiencies associated with local server-based software and paper-based tracking systems.

The mobile app also includes barcode and QR code scanning capabilities, which is critical in the overall aircraft parts inventory tracking and management process. Users can also upload attachments such as 8130s and other documentation related to the components being utilized. Aviation operations and maintenance personnel have the ability to enter write-ups completely electronically, entirely paper-free, and report them in real time to home base.

“The QR code and scanning feature offers users a significant advantage over most existing inventory platforms,” said Greg Heine, vice president of business development of Flightdocs, based in Fort Myers, FL. “Without the need for a dedicated barcode scanner and desktop computer to scan barcodes, the iPad application provides a much easier way to identify, locate and utilize components from inventory.”

Enterprise Inventory Platform is easy to set up, requires minimal training time to get up and running, and all data is available from one screen. An easy to use search function is also incorporated in the aircraft parts management platform. Users will have a vast amount of information available to them at all times, accessible all from a single “Dashboard” page.

“We anticipate the benefits of this development to be substantial, including reducing the manpower required to manage inventory as well as costly errors on stock levels, and eliminating ‘rush’ shipment costs,” Heine added
