How to Install a Car Alarm

Car alarms are an effective way to insure your investment and give you peace of mind. While many cars come standard with some kind of alarm system, some do not. It is no surprise that many people want to install an aftermarket alarm system either because they don’t have one or because they feel that they need to upgrade. Installing a car alarm might seem like a difficult task, but with a little bit of preparation and information, it becomes nothing more than a series of small tasks.

Car Alarm FAQ Frequently Asked Questions, car alarm.#Car #alarm

Car Alarm FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions (UK Information)

Most Insurance Companies will specify that your car should either have a Cat 1 or Cat 2 for the policy to insure against theft. A Category 2 (Cat 2) specifies a car immobiliser and a Category 1 (Cat 1) means a car alarm with incorporated immobiliser. These classification are set by Thatcham which is a company that tests car alarms immobilisers to determine that they reach a certain standard, they then award the systems a Cat 1 or Cat 2 status.

View Cat 1 Car Alarm products.

I need a certificate of installation for my insurance company what do they mean?

Your security device must on a list available from Thatcham but your device must also be installed by an accredited installer to ensure installation standards are also met. Until April 2009 this meant obtaining a VSIB (Vehicle Systems Installation Board) certificate, by using a VSIB accredited installer to fit your security device. But unfortunately in April 2009, the VSIB suddenly went bust and disappeared leaving accredited installers, insurance companies and car owners in limbo.

Most Installers then became MESF (Mobile Electronics Security Federation) accredited or affiliated; a similar organisation to VSIB, which verifies it members and provides training schemes for installers. They also provide similar certificates and embossed stamps used by installers (when clamped on the paper they leave a raised impression through all copies) which shows individual installers unique accreditation number or details.

However Thatcham have now shown an interest in filling the gap left by VSIB. They are inviting all previous VSIB installers to join their new for 2009/2010 Thatcham Recognised Installer scheme. This new scheme is due to be launched July 12th 2010 and will be great for customers, insurance companies and Installers. Thatcham have close links with car insurance companies in the UK and will make available a database of information for aftermarket installed security systems, allowing data to be entered and retrieved directly online. This will eliminate forged documents and make it easier for insurance companies to quiz a Thatcham database for individual car details, providing a more efficient system.

We at Dragon Car Audio Security are part of the Thatcham Recognised Installer scheme, and are also part of the MESF Mobile Electronics Security Federation specialist scheme.

What does it mean when you say car alarms are Thatcham Approved?

Thatcham is a company that provides data assessment services to the Motor Industry and Insurance Companies. They provide vigorous testing of car security systems that are submitted for approval, and once a system has passed they award it a Category 1 or Category 2 status. This information is then made available to insurance companies.

Do I need remote central locking for my car alarm to be fitted?

If your car has central locking then the new alarm will be able to tag off this circuit to give remote central locking through the alarm (doors lock and unlock by pressing the button on the new alarm key fob). If your car doesn t have central locking then in most cases door motors can be fitted, but this will cost more as extra modules are used and the alarm fitting will take longer.

What is a car alarm proximity sensor?

Proximity sensors come in two types:

Single Zone Creates an interior bubble that will sound the alarm if interfered with, ideal for convertible cars as you can arm the alarm with the roof down,

Dual Zone Includes Single Zone but also creates an external bubble that will give a warning sound if someone comes into close contact with the vehicle – creates a deterrent for people looking through the car windows.

What is a car alarm turbo timer?

Some diesel or high performance cars are fitted with a turbo to give the engine extra power while driving. To enable the turbo to live to its full expected lifetime you should allow it to wind-down after each journey (this just means allowing the engine to remain on for a few minutes after coming to a complete stop). By fitting a turbo timer you allow the alarm to take over this chore for you. Simply press a button on the remote and then take the key out of the ignition, the engine will still be running but will automatically switch itself off after a set time.

What is a car alarm tilt sensor?

This feature will make the alarm sound if the car is jacked up or lifted. Unfortunately it is becoming more common for thieves to steal a car on a low loader instead of trying to break into the car cabin and drive away. A tilt sensor will make the alarm go off if the car is moved of jogged, and you can also help protect expensive wheels being stolen from a car with this device.

What is a car alarm with engine remote start?

An alarm fitted with remote start will allow you to start the engine by pressing a button on the remote key fob without being inside the car. This is useful for performance cars and cold mornings as you can warm up the engine before you are ready to drive off. Generally this device will invalidate a Cat1 status as the system may not be approved by Thatcham. As a safety precaution a car alarm with this feature should always be set up so that if you press the foot brake the engine will switch off immediately.

I have a VSIB Certificate with a printed stamp will my insurance company accept it?

Both VSIB and MESF installers are provided with embossed stamps (when clamped on the paper they leave a raised impression through all copies) which shows individual installers unique accreditation number or details. Without this mark the certificate is VOID. Many non-accredited installers get a printed stamp made up and stamp the customer copy with this.

Your insurance company may accept this printed stamp copy, however you will have to hope that you never need to make a claim, as a Loss Adjuster will know the certificate is void.

These paper certificates will become a thing of the past with the Thatcham Recognised Installer scheme due for release July 12th 2010. The new online system will eliminate forgeries and allow insurance companies to look up individual car security details directly from a Thatcham database.

    Car Alarm Install Guides

One of the challenges DIY installers face is finding the correct installation diagrams for car alarms and remote car starters install. Below I have put together the two best free sources for car alarm install guides.

Car Alarm Wiring Diagrams – This site is provided by Bulldog Security and is geared toward car alarm installation and remote car starters install. Some of the very newest models may not be available but the list is very extensive. Probably the best free vehicle wiring site available. While other manufacturers try to make it harder for the DIY installer to find diagrams Bulldog makes them freely available on their site. Something to think about when you choose your next remote start or car alarm.

Vehicle Wiring Diagrams – Provided by the12volt.com this list of vehicle wiring diagrams covers many models and usually provides both alarm and stereo wiring. The diagrams are provided on request by members of their forum that have access to car alarm manufacturers wiring databases. They are then cataloged and indexed on the site. Very helpful and you can request other diagrams in the forum if yours is not already available.

You may also be interested in our Mobile Security and Remote Start Installation DVD. It covers pre-wiring the security system, verifying vehicle wires and function, use of relays and diodes and testing and troubleshooting. Click here .

JOE NEMECHEK AND JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK HEAD-TO-HEAD BATTLE

Father-son duo set to compete against each other at the Daytona International Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 20, 2017)— NASCAR has always been known as a family sport where the love of racing has been passed from generation to generation.

In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) NextEra Energy Resources 250 at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Friday, February 24, John Hunter Nemechek will have the opportunity few sons have enjoyed: competing against his father, 1992 NASCAR XFINITY Series champion Joe Nemechek.

Should both Nemecheks qualify for the race, it would be the first time a father and son have competed in the same NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race since Dave Blaney and Ryan Blaney started the 2013 Inaugural Mudsummer Classic at the Eldora Speedway. It will also be the first time a father and son have competed in any of NASCAR’s top three series at the Daytona International Speedway since the 2006 in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with Bobby Hamilton and Bobby Hamilton Jr.

The Nemecheks will even be running for the same team – family-owned NEMCO Motorsports, which will field John Hunter Nemechek full-time in the No. 8 Fire Alarm Services, Inc. Chevrolet for 2017, and will also field Joe Nemechek in the No. 87 Fleetwing Chevrolet in a select number of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events.

Joe Nemechek and John Hunter Nemechek have competed against each other on the race track just three times before, twice in the Allison Legacy Race Series, and once in the ARCA Midwest Tour. The first time the duo competed against each other was in the Allison Legacy Race Series at the Concord Speedway in 2011 where the son finished first, and the father second. In a rematch at the Carolina Motorsports Park John Hunter Nemechek finished third, and Joe Nemechek finished fourth. The other was in an ARCA Midwest Tour event at the Milwaukee Mile in 2013, where neither driver won but experience outran youth.

John Hunter Nemechek, who posted two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victories and captured his first pole award during the 2016 season, may be at a disadvantage in Daytona. Joe Nemechek has comprehensive experience at the ‘World Center of Racing,’ having five pole awards and two victories (1998, 2002), four top-five and seven top-10 finishes in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. In addition, he has the all-time NASCAR XFINITY Series most starts record, including the most laps completed record, and number of pole awards record at the Daytona International Speedway. Across the top three NASCAR divisions Nemechek has 74 total starts at the Daytona Beach, Fla. facility.

The NextEra Energy Resources 250 will mark NEMCO Motorsports’ fourth and fifth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at the 2.5-mile tri-oval superspeedway. Joe Nemechek posted a team best finish of eighth-place at the Daytona International Speedway on February 21, 2014.

The elder Nemechek last competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2015 at the Texas Motor Speedway, finishing in the sixth-place.

It is not unusual for family to compete against one another in NASCAR’s premier series as sets of brothers have been the norm rather than the exception. Joe Nemechek competed together with younger

brother John Nemechek in three (Watkins Glen International, Phoenix International Raceway and Walt Disney World Speedway) NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events.

This will be the second NASCAR season-opening event Joe Nemechek has competed against Nemechek lineage. In the 1997 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season-opener at the Walt Disney World Speedway, Joe Nemechek in the No. 87 finished nine positions ahead of John Nemechek in the No. 8 – both as owner-driver entries.

Both father and son have collected victories, pole awards, and claimed the title of Most Popular Driver in their respective series, but only Joe Nemechek has claimed the series championship trophy. Without the dedication Joe Nemechek has had towards his son’s career, John Hunter Nemechek knows he might not have had the chance to show his talents, and have the opportunity to team up with his dad at the Daytona International Speedway.

Joe Nemechek and John Hunter Nemechek look to add their names to the short list of fathers and sons who have won races head-to-head in NASCAR’s premier series, and be listed alongside Lee and Richard Petty, Richard and Kyle Petty, Bobby and Davey Allison, Dale and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Buck and Buddy Baker.

Burglary Alarm Systems – Why Choose ADT

“I heard a loud noise at the back of my house. Glass was shattering from the sliding door on the patio. ADT called me right away and I told them to send help because someone was in my house. It is reassuring to know that ADT and the police officers were there.”

    Wendy Haughian, Washington

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does the ADT burglar alarm systems work?

Our burglar alarms may be armed in the “Away” or “Stay” mode. Once the burglar alarms are activated, each monitored zone has the ability to recognize a violation. Once a zone has been violated, the intruder alarm system then dials and ADT monitoring center and transmits the message through a telephone line. Once the signal is received, the intruder alarm system will wait to send another message if another zone is tripped. Entering the code on the burglar alarms keypad and turning off the system will end this process with the ADT monitoring center.

If I lose power, will my burglar alarms still work?

Yes. In case of a power loss, the back-up battery will activate to maintain your intruder alarm protection for several hours. In the event your battery is low, a low-battery signal will be sent to your ADT Monitoring Center so you can be notified.

What happens when I press the panic or fire alarm buttons on the burglar alarms touchpad?

If you hold down the panic or fire alarm buttons on the burglar alarms touchpad for 1 to 3 seconds, an alarm is transmitted to the ADT Monitoring Center, and emergency services are dispatched immediately. An alarm received in this manner cannot be canceled.
