Use of aftermarket or generic car parts to repair collision damage sparks debate – The Morning Call, aftermarket car parts.#Aftermarket #car #parts

After an accident, know whether you’re getting aftermarket parts

Vince Smith, the owner of Biery’s Port Bodyworks in Catasauqua, discusses the controversy over some car insurers’ use of generic, or “aftermarket” parts to fix collision damage on vehicles.

Vince Smith, the owner of Biery’s Port Bodyworks in Catasauqua, discusses the controversy over some car insurers’ use of generic, or “aftermarket” parts to fix collision damage on vehicles.

Scott and Jill Stopay don’t believe Nationwide is on their side.

A Nationwide-insured driver ran into their nearly brand-new leased Toyota Scion in February. They said Nationwide wouldn’t pay to replace the damaged front bumper cover with a Toyota part. It authorized a generic part made by an independent manufacturer, also known as an aftermarket part.

The Stopays, of Lynn Township, wanted a Toyota part.

The car, in our eyes, should be restored to the point it was before the accident, Scott Stopay said.

He told me he pleaded unsuccessfully with Nationwide, as a supervisor assured him the aftermarket part was fine.

For you, it’s fine, Stopay said. It’s not fine for me because it’s not like it was before the accident.

Whether aftermarket parts are equivalent to vehicle manufacturer parts has been the subject of extensive debate and litigation nationwide. Critics say the generic parts don’t always fit or wear the same, can devalue vehicles and can be unsafe. Supporters say there are safe parts and it’s no different than using other generic products, which keep costs down.

It’s something you should be aware of and ask about if you have an accident.

Nationwide wouldn’t discuss the Stopays’ claim with me due to its privacy policy, but said in a statement that it authorizes quality replacement parts from a variety of sources that support high-quality repairs for customers’ vehicles.

Defective alternative parts are guaranteed for as long as the customer owns or leases the vehicle, Nationwide said, noting owners can choose other parts and pay the difference.

Nationwide told me it complies with the law when settling claims. Pennsylvania allows the use of aftermarket parts to repair collision damage, as long as consumers are notified and the parts return the vehicle to its pre-damaged condition, according to the state Insurance Department.

Critics say generic parts don’t restore a vehicle to pre-damaged condition.

Vince Smith, owner of Biery’s Port Bodyworks in Catasauqua, which repaired the Stopays’ car, considers aftermarket parts to be inferior. He likened it to an insurer replacing a stolen Rolex with an imitation Rolex.

It looks the same, Smith said. But it’s not the same.

He believes generic parts are appropriate in some situations, such as when insurance isn’t involved and a vehicle owner is paying to fix an older car.

If your insurer is paying and you’ve agreed to a policy that requires aftermarket parts, you don’t have a choice, Smith said. But if another driver’s insurance is paying due to an accident the other driver caused, which is what happened to the Stopays, Smith believes it’s unfair to be forced to accept aftermarket parts.

If they want to do that for their customer, that’s one thing, Scott Stopay said.

He and his wife opted to have Smith repair their damaged bumper cover instead of installing a new aftermarket one.

There’s usually not much vehicle owners can do when an aftermarket part is forced on them by an insurer, said Erica Eversman, an Ohio attorney who founded the Automotive Education Policy Institute to teach consumers about insurance claims and collision repairs.

She said vehicle owners can complain to the insurer or state Insurance Department, or consider legal action. Most of the major legal decisions regarding aftermarket parts, though, have favored insurers.

She believes that by using generic parts, insurers have lost sight of their duty to restore a damaged vehicle.

Their job is to pay properly for the cost of repair, Eversman said. It’s not to try to strong-arm somebody into accepting less.

Jack Gillis, executive director of the Certified Automotive Parts Association, which certifies aftermarket parts, told me consumers often happily use generic products when they’re paying, but demand name-brand ones when insurance is paying.

In a crash repair, there is a sense of entitlement, Gillis said.

The association tests parts to see if they are equivalent to manufacturer parts, including crash-testing structural bumper parts. About 25 percent of aftermarket parts are certified, he said.

The use of high-quality alternative parts can help contain both crash repair costs as well as insurance premiums, Gillis told me. It’s just like going to your doctor and deciding to use generic prescription drugs.

While the impact of generic parts on a car’s appearance and value are important, what really matters is whether they are safe. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash-tested aftermarket bumpers in 2010 and found their performance can vary.

An aftermarket bumper meeting the Certified Automotive Parts Association’s standards performed as well as a Dodge bumper. The institute said that shows aftermarket parts can be produced without compromising safety.

The institute also crash-tested two other generic bumpers that weren’t built to the standard. They didn’t perform the same as a manufacturer’s bumper.

That’s not a good thing from a safety standpoint, Adrian Lund, the institute’s president, wrote in the report. Aftermarket bumpers need to perform exactly the same as original bumpers in a crash. Even small changes in design can skew air bag sensors and alter vehicle damage patterns.

Lund said in the report that consumers are right to be cautious … because it’s clear that structural aftermarket parts must be exactly copied to be sure they’ll work properly in a crash.

But the institute says vehicle owners shouldn’t worry about non-structural generic parts such as fenders and bumper covers. Citing previous tests, it said those parts are irrelevant to crash safety.

Smith questions that. He said newer vehicles have become more sophisticated with all parts working together and if one piece doesn’t fit or react the same as the manufacturer’s part, he fears that could throw off an air bag system.

Ask your body shop and the insurer what parts will be used if your car needs crash repairs. You’ll have to decide whether you’re comfortable with an aftermarket part, and whether you want that part to be certified.

Review your insurance policy to see if it mandates aftermarket parts. If that’s a concern, ask if policies are offered that provide manufacturer parts, though you should expect to pay more. If your vehicle is leased, check your agreement to see if it prohibits using aftermarket parts to make repairs.

Problems when changing gears and accelerating coupled with thumping noises are some indications that your automobile has a driveshaft trouble. But sometimes, you don’t actually need to replace the entire shaft. When you check the driveshaft and find it still in good condition, it might be some small parts causing the problem. In case there are some irregularities in the driveshaft support depicted by looseness, you only have to replace the driveshaft support brg. If you want a durable replacement, you need to get the Aftermarket driveshaft support brg. It comes in hard-shelled steel with a hallowed inner diameter. The said structure serves as the housing of the bearing, all the while locked with heavy-duty grease as its lubrication. Stock support bearings need virtually no maintenance unless their housing gets damaged and the lubrication leaks. The Aftermarket driveshaft support brg. is designed to last a long time under normal conditions. It’s engineered for a universal and direct fit, so your can easily find one for your auto and mount it DIY. With that, rest assured that you’ll be able to save a lot of dollars while you gain more experiences when it comes to technical awareness and skills in dealing with your vehicle.

Love to DIY every minor repair and maintenance service in your automobile? Well, you must be lucky to have a complete step-by-step instruction manual, plus the basic skills needed to do the job! And if you’re replacing your stock release bearing guide with an Aftermarket rel. brg. guide, that skill and passion for DIY will be a great help. The guide may be a small part of your release bearing but without it, there’ll be problems in the clutch operation of your auto. Clutch problems may manifest via vibrations, noises, and shifting and pedal problems. And if it’s a pedal bind, the guide is one that you must inspect for damage. The rel. brg. guide keeps the release bearing in proper place, allowing the clutch release system to efficiently engage and disengage. So if it’s damaged, upgrade it with an Aftermarket rel. brg. guide at once. This high-quality product will surely keep your release bearing in proper location all the time, so you need not worry so much when you drive. The Aftermarket rel. brg. guide will fit various auto makes and models, and you won’t have a hard time finding one. The Aftermarket brand also ensures that its products are good for average DIYers, ensuring that every consumer can save money on installation fees.

Maintaining the metal components in your auto-the auto body, for instance-is easy by coating them. But what about those that remain moving and in contact with other metal parts as they operate? It’s going to be so inconvenient, and also a waste of money, if you keep coating them every so often to keep them from wearing. Well, moving metal parts are protected via lubrication. Consider the release bearing in your automobile. Such part is not painted or coated for protection but is packed with lubrication via a heavy-duty rel. brg. seal. If this seal wears out, a better choice for replacement is the Aftermarket rel. brng. seal. This seal is manufactured under extensive processes, including heating and computer-aided designing procedures, to ensure its high quality. And as it’s OEM-fit, you can do the installation by yourself. Just make sure that you have the proper hand tools in doing the task to ensure that you don’t break or imperil the release bearing. Using hammer and chisel may be dangerous to these parts, so use the proper tools like screws and proper extractors if needed. With these tools ready together with the Aftermarket rel. brng. seal, you can now start the restoration and re-lubrication of your release bearing.

Aftermarket Versus Manufacturer Car Parts

06/11/2009 (updated 08/25/2009) – By Ronald Montoya, Consumer Advice Associate

When you take your car to the dealership’s service department for repairs, you know you’re getting Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) car parts. However, if you take your car to an independent shop, you’ll most likely get aftermarket car parts. Is there anything wrong with that? Does a less expensive part mean a poorer-quality part? And in what situations should you use only OEM parts?

To answer these questions, we’ve created a list of pros and cons to help you make a more informed decision when choosing what parts go into your car. In this way, you can strike a balance between cost and quality.

Aftermarket Parts

An aftermarket part is any part for a vehicle that is not sourced from the car’s maker. If the parts are direct replacement parts, they will not void your car’s warranty. A number of companies make parts designed to function the same, or in some cases even better than the original. Tom Torbjornsen, host of America’s Car Show, estimates that about 80 percent of independent shops use aftermarket parts. “Be an informed consumer,” said Torbjornsen.”Shop around, make sure you’re dealing with a good mechanic and request high-quality aftermarket parts.”

PROS

  • Less expensive: Aftermarket parts are usually less expensive than OEM parts; how much you save varies by brand. Shop around to find the best price and to get an idea of how much that part usually costs. If the price of a part seems too good to be true, ask questions about its quality.
  • Quality can be equal to or greater than OEM: In some cases, you may end up with a better part than you started with. “The aftermarket companies reverse-engineer the part, and work the weaknesses out,” said Torbjornsen. For example, when an automaker designs its brake pads, it has to strike a balance between cost, durability, noise levels and performance. If you want better performance and don’t mind some extra brake noise (some brake pads squeak even though they are stopping the car effectively), an aftermarket pad may be your best choice.
  • More variety: There are hundreds of companies that make aftermarket parts. Some specialize in specific parts, and other companies, like NAPA, make almost any part you can think of. More variety means greater selection and a wider range of prices.
  • Better availability: You can walk into any gas station, auto parts store or local mechanic, and they’re bound to have a part that fits your car. This gives you more options on where to take your car for service.

CONS

  • Quality varies greatly: The saying “you get what you pay for” rings true here. Some aftermarket parts are inferior because of the use of lower-quality materials. Stick with aftermarket brands you’re familiar with or are recommended by a mechanic you trust, even if these parts cost a bit more.
  • Overwhelming selection: If you’re not familiar with aftermarket brands, the selection could be overwhelming, and there’s some chance you may get a bad quality part. Even a part as simple as a spark plug can be made by dozens of different companies and comes in numerous variations. Consult your mechanic for advice or simply stick with the OEM part when the price difference isn’t significant.
  • May not have a warranty: To keep costs down, some aftermarket parts are sold without a warranty.

OEM Parts

OEM parts are made by the vehicle’s manufacturer. These match the parts that came with your vehicle when it rolled off the assembly line.

PROS

  • Easier to choose your part: If you go to the parts counter at a dealership and ask for any part, you’ll usually get one type. You don’t have to worry about assessing the quality of different brands and prices.
  • Greater assurance of quality: The OEM part should work exactly as the one you are replacing. It is what the vehicle was manufactured with and provides a peace of mind in its familiarity and performance.
  • Comes with a warranty: Most automakers back up their OEM parts with a one-year warranty. And if you get your car repaired at the dealer, they’ll usually stand by their labor as well.

CONS

  • More expensive: OEM parts will usually cost more than an aftermarket part. When it comes to bodywork, OEM parts tend to cost about 60 percent more, according to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI). There is more of a burden on parts and service to increase a dealership’s profit, since the sales departments have been underperforming. But the gap in pricing might be closing, says Torbjornsen. “We’ve seen a balance in the scales; dealers are now trying to compete with independent shops.”
  • Need to be bought at the dealership: Even though there are other ways of buying OEM parts (eBay, online wholesalers), most people will go to a dealership to buy their car parts. This limits the number of places you can buy from. You can request OEM parts from your local mechanic, but it may take longer to get your vehicle repaired since the parts must be ordered.
  • Quality may not be superior: You paid the extra money for an OEM part, hoping that it was vastly better than an aftermarket part. But that may not always be the case. As Torbjornsen mentioned earlier, some aftermarket parts are equal to or in some cases better than OEM parts. So you might be paying extra just for the name.

When Should You Request OEM Parts?

When it comes to collision repairs, make sure you are getting OEM parts, since aftermarket body panels may not fit properly or have proper crumple zones for crash safety.

If you lease your car, there are also economic considerations. Since aftermarket parts decrease a vehicle’s book value, using them to repair your vehicle’s body may cost you part or all of your security deposit.

But here’s the rub: In 21 states and the District of Columbia, a body shop’s repair estimate does not have to indicate whether aftermarket parts will be used. You’ll often find that your insurance company will favor aftermarket parts because they are cheaper. If you request OEM parts, some insurance companies ask you to pay an additional fee. Check with your insurance provider beforehand, to see what parts they will cover.

Which Is the Best Way To Go?

All aftermarket parts are not created equal but all OEM parts are. This creates its own set of advantages and disadvantages. If you’re familiar with a number of brands or work on your own car, aftermarket parts can save you a lot of money. If you’re not familiar with aftermarket brands, prefer to have everything done at the dealership and don’t mind paying a bit extra for that peace of mind, OEM is a good choice for you.

CAPA encourages competition in the marketplace in the hope that their program will ultimately reduce expense to the consumer and the industry while increasing and assuring part quality.

CAPA s policies are set by a nine-member Board of Directors representing auto body shops, consumer groups, insurance companies and part distributors. CAPA s independent validator conducts the testing, inspection and compliance aspects of the program. Only competitive auto body parts that meet or exceed CAPA Quality Standards for fit, materials, and corrosion resistance are allowed to display the CAPA Quality Seal and are listed in a directory, which is widely available to the crash parts industry. CAPA has a Technical Committee made up of experts in the collision repair and auto body part industry. This committee performs periodic, in-depth reviews of the Standards, refining them as required, to assure the continued quality of CAPA certified parts.

6 Best Rated Aftermarket Auto Warranty Companies

When shopping for car warranties, you could either choose to purchase an extended manufacturer warranty or an aftermarket auto warranty sold by independent companies. Aftermarket auto warranties are cheaper than factory warranties. However, you need to make sure that you deal with a reputed company so that you get the maximum benefits from your auto warranty plan. You should also be wary of companies that offer you coverage for a very low price as these companies are likely to reject your claims on some pretext or the other. On the other hand, there are several aftermarket auto warranty companies that provide good coverage, quick claims handling and competitive prices. You could research some of these best rated companies if you wish to purchase an aftermarket car warranty.

Some Top Rated Aftermarket Companies Include:

American Auto Shield

American Auto Shield offers various coverage plans that suit your budget .The company is also given an A rating on the Better Business Bureau. Message from Richard Green, President

As President of 1A, it is my job to see that all of our customers have the most satisfying shopping experience with 1A Auto. So, we strive to supply the highest quality parts, the most knowledgeable customer service people, the fastest delivery and the most reliable and secure transactions. So far, it is working. We have many loyal customers who return time after time, we have the highest customer satisfaction ratings of anyone in our industry, and we have the lowest return rates of anyone in our industry.

Meet the 1A Auto Family

Before becoming president of 1A Auto in 1999, Richard Green was a trained aerospace engineer. He uses the quality-assurance techniques he learned from aerospace to oversee the consistent quality of 1A Auto’s parts. This results in the highest quality ratings and lowest returns rate in the industry. For more than 50 years, the Green family has been installing and using the same high-quality auto parts that you’ll find on our website.

Jeremy has enjoyed eleven years at 1A Auto, as a product specialist with a very strong knowledge of cars dating back to the 1930’s. Jeremy has an automotive degree and spent two years as an ASE certified technician at a local Cadillac dealer. Jeremy owns one of his dream cars, a 1964 Chevy Impala convertible currently under restoration. He also has heavily modified his 1988 Honda Hawk GT as well as a Dodge Ram 50 Truck with a turbocharged 4G63 Mitsubishi Eclipse motor. Jeremy is a gearhead to the full extent, and it would be a miracle if you own a car that he can’t identify. Jeremy’s custom work with fiberglass and metal fabrication has set him on fire more than once, but has not doused his passion to know everything there is to know about cars.

Bob has worked at 1A Auto since 2002 and has been working on cars since he was seven, when his dad let him help repair stock cars and motorcycles. As a teenager, Bob got his first car, a 1967 Pontiac GTO that he restored to showroom condition. Bob obtained his BS in Mechanical Engineering at UMASS Amherst, and his education, in addition to salvage yard experience, over 20 years with interchange systems, and 39 years of extensive hands on experience, makes him an expert in the field of determining fits and quality of parts. As a Senior Product Specialist at 1A Auto, his skills make him unmatched in his ability to provide the highest quality parts for our customers. When not at work, Bob likes to spend his time restoring his 1969 Ram Air IV GTO Judge.

Comments:I bought a OEM spoiler for an ’06 Scion TC. Very good quality product. Paint matched perfectly, and the quality is top notch. The install was easy enough for someone handy with a drill. So far, the spoiler looks like it came with the car from the dealership. It has already survived a trip through the car wash as well. This is definately a best value for anyone looking to steer away from paying a premium price for aftermarket parts. No problems in shipping. Will definately purchase from them again! Michael Aguirre

Comments: I have received my spoiler for my 2008 accord sedan and it is perfect. The color match was exact and the quality is the best that I have seen. If you have ever heard of buying a pig in a poke well in this case it is exactly what myspoiler.com says it is. I would not hesitate buying another spoiler from you guys in the future but I think you have made such a great product that I won’t have the need for one. I would like to tell everyone that if they buy from anyone else they will not be happy. DEVORE FROM BUTNER N.C.
