Car Reviews – 2016 Renault Megane revealed further in new images

A mighty collection of new on-road photos for the next-generation 2016 Renault Megane have been handed down today, ahead of the five-door hatch’s global launch next year.

Revealed at September’s Frankfurt motor show. the new Megane arrives as a successor to the now seven year-old third-generation model, which benefited from a key facelift in 2014.

The new Megane joins its most recent stablemates in wearing Renault’s new family look. which includes a diving grille design up front that reaches out into the headlights for a unified wing-like design.

This look is now featured across the Renault range, in some cases as a facelift of earlier models. For the new Megane, as with the big new Talisman – and the recently spied successor to the Koleos SUV – that look also includes a pair of sharp LED hooks that reach down into the front bumper.

Underpinning the new Megane is Renault Nissan’s new CMF-CD platform, which forms the basis of models like the Euro-market Renault Kadjar. Espace and Talisman. and Nissan’s Qashqai. X-Trail and Euro-market Pulsar .

Renault’s new-generation small hatch measures 4359mm long and 1447mm tall, making it 64mm longer but 25mm lower than its predecessor, while riding on a 28mm longer wheelbase.

Depending on the market, the 2016 Megane will be offered with four petrol and five diesel engines, although a much smaller selection is likely for Australia.

New 152kW petrol and 123kW diesel GT models will headline the regular Megane range, with the former replacing the 162kW/340Nm GT220 model.

These models will act as rivals to the likes of Volkswagen’s Golf GTI and GTD offerings.

The new Megane will hit Australia in the second half of 2016.

Click the photos tab above for more new images of the next-generation Megane.

Hertz Review

Hertz’s strong point is how customizable it is. It makes it easy to rent a car with special features or add-ons. For example, those with disabilities can easily book a car that meets their needs. Other sites require that disabled customers call a customer service number ahead of time so that an appropriate vehicle can be found or adjusted to suit them. When you order a car through this service, you can specify whether you need left- or right-hand controls and whether you need a wheelchair-accessible bus for concierge services during the rental process. Each lot has cars with hand controls you can rent at no extra charge and without prior notice. Hertz only requests that you check a box for the hand-control vehicle when you fill out the online form.

Another feature that is unique to this service is the ability to rent various sizes of child safety seats. Most services only offer toddler seat rentals. The company offers rentals for infants under 20 pounds, toddlers who are 20 to 40 pounds and children who are 40 to 80 pounds. These simple options can make a traveling parent’s life much easier, since the alternative is to lug your child’s car seat along.

On top of these great features, this service also has online check-in so that you don’t have to fight the lines at a rental desk. Unfortunately, there is no carpool option for people who want to rent a car or van to share with co-workers for an extended period, as there is with other rental services.

If you want to buy a car instead of rent one, you can shop on the Hertz website with the site’s Rent2Buy section. You can pick the year, model and how far away you are willing to drive to purchase a vehicle. Once you have done so, the site shows you what is available. The car’s information includes a picture, mileage, engine type, body style and where the car is located, along with dealer contact information.

Types of Rentals

Hertz has various sizes of cars and vans, as well as luxury, hybrid and convertible models. There are cars that carry five passengers and get nearly 50 miles to the gallon.

This service has added a limited selection of pickups to its fleet, including a five-passenger king cab pickup with a relatively small bed that can be used for moving. Hertz doesn’t have commercial trucks designed specifically for moving. However, there is a plethora of vans and SUVs to choose from.

Ease of Use

Hertz has a well-organized site. When you first open the website, it calls to mind the all-but-obsolete phone books that used be placed on our doorsteps, which may be one reason it feels dated. But once you get past that, it is quite a functional and user-friendly website.

The reservation tool and navigation bar are prominently displayed on the homepage, and there is little clutter or gimmicks. This site has a search tool that you can use to find items quickly and easily.

The location finder has more features than average. You can search for rental locations by city, zip code or airport, or you can browse a list of all the locations.

Help & Support

The service does not offer online insurance, roadside assistance packages or airport shuttle information, but it does offer great customer service when you have a question. If you need help, you can email customer support or talk with a representative in real time through the chat service or customer care line.

CarsDirect Review

The CarsDirect site is the most informative and useful of all the online auto loan sites we reviewed. In addition to including the basic features, it puts many helpful tools at your disposal.

The site includes a unique car-searching option. You can browse cars by make and model. The database includes new and used cars of every manufacturer imaginable. After you open a screen to view a car, there will be photo galleries with color options, professional and user reviews, and average costs. This information will help you get a rough idea for pricing quotes on your loan. It also helps you find the car that s perfect for your needs.

After you ve found a car that you re interested in purchasing, take the price quote to the online loan calculator. This will give you basic quotes including monthly payments for your car loan. You can adjust the length of the loan, the final price and all other options to help you figure out your approximate monthly payment. This is simply an estimate and will not necessarily reflect the actual monthly payment, but it will give you an idea of what you can afford while you re shopping.

CarsDirect also offers a trade-in value calculator. This tool will let you know how much a dealer is likely to pay for your car. Again, the price is a simple estimate, not an offer. But this will give you an idea of how much you can expect to get for your trade-in.

You will also be able to create an account with CarsDirect even before you have a loan. This will allow you to save your favorite vehicles and store all the information about loan calculations and trade-in values for future reference. After you ve secured a loan and purchased your vehicle, you ll be able to access your account for payments and all other loan information. This type of account is not available with all online loan providers, but it can be very useful.

Payment Options

There are very few restrictions for loan applications with this service. There are no application fees when filling out an application. The only way you ll have any bills will be if you receive a loan.

Many auto loan companies impose minimum and maximum loan limits. CarsDirect does not have these limits, so you can apply for any amount, no matter how large or small. The amount and terms you qualify for simply depend on your credit history, down payment and current income. Logically, if you have poor credit history and a low monthly income, it s unlikely that you ll receive a six-figure loan. Also, there are no maximum mileage restrictions for the car you purchase.

Security

Our one complaint about CarsDirect is that its web security does not display an extended validation certificate. Many car loan sites advertise this certificate by placing a green bar by the website’s URL in your browser. It’s an easy way to know if a website is secure or not. Despite not having an extended validation certificate, CarsDirect does have one of the strongest site encryptions that we’ve seen in auto loan services, with 256 bit encryption.

Types of Loans

CarsDirect will lend money for the purchase of new and used cars. This is extremely important, as you may not know yet which type of car you d like to purchase. There are even options for refinancing an existing loan. This is particularly common for those who have improved their credit score recently.

You can also use the auto financing service to find vehicles available for leasing. This is not the most common option for the site, but it is available. Keep in mind that auto loan rates will vary from person to person depending on your current financial situation and credit score.

Help & Support

There are many customer service options available with CarsDirect. Our favorite was the chat feature. While we browsed the cars and loan options, we opened the chat window and asked all our questions. The customer service representatives were extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and we hardly had to wait at all to have our questions expertly answered. The phone support option also connected very quickly and was a valuable resource. When we sent emails, we received prompt and succinct answers. There are also very detailed and organized databases of frequently asked questions.

It s vital to have an auto lender that responds promptly to questions, complaints and issues. We found the representatives at CarsDirect to be attentive, helpful and very knowledgeable. If you have a question about purchasing a car, we highly recommend using this service.

CarsDirect is the ideal option for those looking to receive a loan to purchase a car or truck. The competitive interest rates and additional features make it a great research tool and lender. The online loan calculator, integrated car search and trade-in calculator are useful options for all auto shoppers.

Here s what we re looking forward to in 2016 from the world s top car manufacturers

One thing is very clear at the moment: the car industry is looking great in 2016. From cheeky city cars and outrageous hypercars to new hybrids and all-electric SUVs. manufacturers have been busy prepping the models you want most – so we’ve put together a list of the best new cars for 2016.

While some of these top new 2016 cars focus on delivering the best driving thrills and push the boundaries in terms of design, most offer something new in the shape of connectivity and making the daily commute that little bit more pleasurable.

To keep you up to speed with what’s on the horizon, we’ve compiled this must-read page that showcases the best new cars destined for your local showroom in 2016.

So, if you’re in the market to buy a new car, don’t set foot in a dealership until you’ve read our rundown of the best cars for 2016.

The best new cars coming in 2016

Abarth 500X

Image 2 of 69

Image 2 of 69

Price £22,000 (est), On sale Winter 2016

Fiat’s cheeky ad saw a 500 grow into a crossover after ‘swallowing’ a little blue pill. Well, now tuning arm Abarth is set to pump the 500X up further, creating a 200bhp rival to the Nissan Juke Nismo RS and MINI Countryman JCW. and our exclusive image shows how it could look.

Yet the Abarth 500X would get far more than just a flash bodykit, as it’s likely to use the Alfa Romeo 4C ’s 1.75-litre turbo. That would mean 0-62mph in less than seven seconds with an extremely fruity soundtrack to match.

Alfa Romeo Giulia

Image 3 of 69

Image 3 of 69

Price £24,000 (est), On sale September 2016

Alfa Romeo has been absent from the compact executive market for the past four years, and it’s been a less glamorous place as a result. While the brand’s last attempt at a BMW 3 Series  beater was the sharp-suited 159, the new Giulia  revives a classic Alfa name and uses sensuous looks in a bid to win sales.

Unusually, bosses revealed the hottest model first – the wraps came off the BMW M3 -rivalling 4WD QV, with its 503bhp 3.0-litre V6 turbo, this year – but the range will include smaller-engined versions and numerous trim levels to battle the likes of the 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class , Audi’s new A4  and the Jaguar XE .

There’ll be a range of efficient diesels and turbo petrols to appeal to company buyers, and most Giulias will be rear-wheel drive to compete with rivals for thrills. The platform will also underpin Alfa’s new SUV.

Aston Martin DB11

Image 5 of 69

Image 5 of 69

Price £170,000 (est), On sale Late 2016

It’s been a long time coming, but the beautiful DB9  – a car at the heart of the Aston Martin range – will be replaced by the DB11. which is set to arrive in late 2016. Under the bonnet should be a development of the existing Ford-built 6.0-litre V12, possibly turbocharged for added power and better efficiency.

The DB11 – illustrated here in our exclusive image – could also be available with a V8 engine. The likely candidate will be Mercedes-AMG’s latest 4.0-litre twin-turbo, taking advantage of Aston’s relationship with Daimler (the German company has a five per cent stake).

Plus, the interior could share components with Mercedes, with Auto Express spy shots showing a range of buttons and infotainment system from the S-Class. The DB11 will be the first in a new range of Astons, including an all-electric Rapide  and DBX crossover .

Audi A5

Image 6 of 69

Image 6 of 69

Price £30,000 (est), On sale Sept 2016

Audi will follow up its all-new A4 with a new A5 using the same platform. As our spy shot shows, it will be far more rakish and, as before, come first as a two-door coupé, then later as a more practical five-door Sportback.

As well as being lower and wider than the A4, it will be lighter and more efficient than the car it replaces, plus far more refined. The lower-powered 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI version will emit less than 100g/km of CO2 – and this in a coupé likely to set new quality benchmarks in the class.

Audi S4 Price £40,000 (est) On sale Early 2016

Bentley Bentayga

Image 10 of 69

Image 10 of 69

Price £160,000 (est), On sale Spring 2016

Bentley’s familiar 6.0-litre W12 engine will deliver 600bhp and 900Nm of torque, enabling it to get from 0-62mph in four seconds and top nearly 190mph. With those figures, the Bentayga will accelerate as quickly as a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, but a claimed 22.1mpg and 292g/km of CO2 mean it’ll be costly to run. In time there will be a higher-powered Speed version, as well as more economical diesel and hybrid models.

BMW 5 Series

Image 12 of 69

Image 12 of 69

Price £32,000 (est), On sale Summer 2016

With the current 5 Series still at the top of the class, the new model seems to have come around quickly. But 2016 will see it arrive with improved efficiency, a cutting- edge chassis and connectivity, and a sleeker profile.

The tech includes a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) body similar to that used in the i3 to keep weight down but improve strength and safety, and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that will see a 530e model surpass 100mpg. Three-cylinder petrol engines will also feature.

BMW M2

Image 13 of 69

Image 13 of 69

Price £44,070, On sale April 2016

The eagerly awaited successor to the 1 Series M Coupé is almost with us, offering a rapid, slightly smaller and cheaper alternative to the M4. As our picture shows, it adds some muscle to the familiar 2 Series body.

Unlike the 1M, though, the M2 will be available with manual and automatic gearboxes. Under the bonnet lies an uprated version of the M235i’s turbo straight-six engine, but with 370bhp. That means 0-60mph takes 4.5 seconds for the manual and 4.3 seconds for the auto.

BMW i8 Plus Price £150,000 (est), On sale Late 2016

Auto Insurance Review

Finding the Best Auto Insurance

Finding good, affordable auto insurance requires some searching, but it’s worth the effort. By law, anyone who drives needs to have the minimal level of state required insurance, and those who have a vehicle loan are required to carry more than minimal coverage. If you are involved in a serious accident, you’ll be glad to have as much coverage as possible to handle medical bills and car damage. Generally, the more coverage you have, the higher your premiums will be, although this is not always the case. That’s why it pays to compare quotes.

We compared the 12 largest auto insurance companies that provide coverage for individuals in most areas of the U.S. Even though USAA is one of the largest companies, it was excluded since its plans are only available to those with military connections. AARP was also excluded because its plans are provided by The Hartford Financial Services Group, which we have reviewed separately.

While comparing insurance companies keep in mind that premium rates vary greatly based on numerous factors, and some services might not be available in your area. In addition, while it is rather straightforward to find upfront information about insurance companies, it’s difficult to discover details about how well claims are processed and paid.

What Affects Car Insurance Rates?

Insurance rates are carefully calculated based on numerous factors. Personal factors include age, location, average miles driven, gender, marital status, education and driving record. Financial factors include the replacement cost of the car, repair costs, claim history, insurance history and credit score.

To give you an idea of what a low-risk insured person might look like compared to a high-risk person, see these two extremes:

Low-Risk: A 40-year-old married female who is college educated and lives in a low-incident area. She also has a better than average credit rating, a good driving record, steady previous insurance and no claims in over five years. The car has low repair costs and is not tied to a bank loan. She might only be required to pay $60 to $90 per month for insurance.

High-Risk: A 23-year-old unmarried male without a college education who lives in a high-incident area. He would have spotty or bad credit, a DUI or other major moving vehicle violation, has been without insurance in the past and has recently submitted claims. The car is expensive to fix and a there is a loan on the vehicle. This person’s premium may be over $300 per month. In this case, some insurance companies may even deny coverage.

As you can see, numerous factors contribute to your premium. In addition, there are no protections in respect to gender, education, location or credit discrimination. Insurance companies are allowed, to the best of their ability, to calculate the risk of insuring individuals. If you are in the high-risk category, you might have to take a higher rate until you can build up a better history and or perhaps trade to a lower-priced, paid-off car. To learn more about the basics of auto insurance see our articles about auto insurance .

If you are in the low-risk category, you may save some money by bundling your auto insurance with other plans such as homeowners or umbrella insurance. Some insurance companies also offer discounts to those who pay premiums in advance or by automatic payment. Discounts aren’t always listed on the company’s website, so you’ll want to ask about discounts before you enter a new contract so you can get the best possible rate.

Obtaining Auto Insurance Quotes

First and foremost, get more than one quote. We recommend that you obtain three quotes from three different insurance agencies. In our research, we learned that in most cases you can obtain ballpark quotes with just your basic information. However, eventually you will have to submit your social security number, VIN and other personal information to actually obtain the insurance coverage. Most will check your credit reports and driving status as well before they will provide coverage.

You can obtain a quote by visiting the insurance company’s website. On the website, you can enter your zip code or state information and obtain a quote in only a few minutes. You’ll need to enter your basic information such as name, address and car make. You will also be asked about your driving history, credit and average driving distances. The company will most likely mention a few discounts, but you should also ask about additional discounts before you sign up.

Possible discounts you might be eligible for include: good driver, good student, senior, hybrid vehicle, safety features, security features, multiple auto, defensive driving course discounts, farm vehicle, automatic payments, pay in advance, teen discounts and more. We noticed that Allstate specifically seems to offer a wide range of discount options. Many also offer discounts to military personnel or government employees, so it is worth asking about if you are associated with these organizations.

How to enable Nested Virtualization on Hyper-V Windows Server 2016

There are currently a lot of emerging technologies in the marketplace right now, and there are few that are more popular than the concept of nested virtualization. This capability has been a possibility in the vSphere ESXi stack for some time, but until recently, Microsoft had shown little interest in providing this same functionality. It could be, this was due to the fact that the only real use cases were lab environments and training. This has changed recently with the advent of cloud and container technologies as we continue to abstract more and more layers of our IT infrastructure.

Before we delve deeper into that topic, what is nested virtualization? Nested virtualization is simply the practice of running a hypervisor within a virtual machine as shown in the figure below. You essentially have two layers of virtualization happening and this can be useful for a number of reasons.

Test Environments. Hardware isn t cheap, and many organizations struggle with a way for their IT staff to effectively train up on the newest virtualization technologies. Being able to nest Hyper-V now provides the ability for IT Pros to simulate entire virtualized environments, without the hefty price tag associated with dedicated equipment.

Containers: This is the real reason, why Microsoft took the time to create nested virtualization. If you haven t heard of containers, I m wondering what rock you ve been living under for this past year. In the event you are still in the dark, think of a container as a type of mini virtual machine, simply with applications in mind. Instead of virtualizing the entire OS, a container focuses on providing an isolated environment for an application to reside in without the overhead of a full virtual machine. At any rate, Microsoft is providing us with two different types of containers.

Windows Server Containers

Windows Server containers aren t really relevant to our conversation other than to see how they are different from Hyper-V containers, which DO apply to our discussion on nested virtualization. As you can see in figure 1-2 below containers run on top of the docker engine. This allows the Windows OS to host up applications in an isolated, almost VMish, type of manner. The big benefit here is the ability to host up an app without having to bring the operating system along with it.

Figure 1-2: Basic Windows Container architecture

Windows containers, while amazing, do have one issue however, when it comes to security and system use. In order to remove the OS requirement, they all share the underlying Windows Kernel of the host operating system. Making them unusable for environments requiring higher levels of isolation. That is where Hyper-V Containers come in.

Hyper-V Containers

Hyper-V containers take pretty much the same approach, but add in a Hyper-V virtual machine element. As shown below in figure 1-3, we can see that things look very similar to figure 1-1 in that this technology is using the model of nested virtualization, with multiple layers of virtualization. The big difference between Windows Containers and Hyper-V containers is this added layer. The application is placed into a container within a virtual machine running on Hyper-V, OS and all. This provides that further level of isolation, and prevents shared use of the host kernel in those situations where the application can t share the kernel, or you don t want it too.

Figure 1-3: Basic Hyper-V Container Architecture

The next question you might ask is, Why wouldn t I run the Hyper-V Container directly from the host level? Why do I need to add in the extra virtual machine and run it from there?

The answer is, you don t. You could certainly run a Hyper-V container directly from the physical host, but Microsoft doesn t want to lock you in at that layer. Think about Azure. Think about service providers and large hosters. Think about large enterprises. These entities are not going to want to give tenants access to the hypervisor running on the physical box in all cases. That could create problems depending on the hosting model.

Customers and organizations hosted within these datacenters are going to want access to this type of technology. Hyper-V containers and nested virtualization provide that ability, by allowing us to stand up Hyper-V containers on Hyper-V in a nested state.

What about App-V?

A lot of folks are going to look at this and say, gee that looks an awful lot like what App-V does . Does this replace App-V. The answer is no. From my perspective, containers are intended to run in the datacenter, and primarily for stateless workloads at this point in time. They are designed to run on servers. App-V, virtualizes an application and packages it up for distribution to client end-points. The two essentially have different use cases, and I don t see that changing in the near future, so there shouldn t be any concerns for the App-V folks out there. Though, don t let that stop you from learning about containers?

How to Enable and Use Nested Virtualization on Hyper-V in Windows Server 2016 TP4

With all of this in mind, you can see Why Microsoft finally decided to provide this functionality. Their primary concern was for containers. Now, how do we go about using it?

As of this writing, there are a couple of requirements needed to enable this functionality.

  1. Dynamic Memory MUST be disabled on the virtual machine containing the nested instance of Hyper-V
  2. VM must have more than 1 vCPU
  3. MAC address Spoofing must be enabled on the NIC attached to the virtual machine. This setting can be found in the advanced settings under the NIC in the virtual machine s properties.
  4. Virtualization Extensions need to be exposed to the VM as seen below.

The current setting of the virtualization extensions can be seen by running:

Get-VMProcessor -VMName Target VM ‘ s name | FL *

The setting you re looking for in the output is: ExposeVirtualizationExtensions = True. By default this setting is disabled. To enable it simply run:

Set -VMProcessor -VMName Target VM ‘ s Name -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true

That s all there really is too it. Once these steps are followed for the target VM, you can simply install Server 2016 TP4 within the VM, install the Hyper-V Role, and away you go! Nest away!

All of these items are displayed in the video below:

What Doesn t Work? (as of this writing)

Needless to say, THIS IS NOT FOR PRODUCTION USE! This functionality is still in early testing phases, so there are some things that don t currently work.

  1. Running OS MUST be Server 2016 TP4 Build 10565 or newer
  2. Live Memory Resize will not work
  3. Checkpoints will not work
  4. Live Migration does not work
  5. Save/Restore will not work
  6. Does not work on AMD chips currently.

Wrap-Up

So today we ve shown you how to enable and nest Hyper-V inside of a virtual machine using Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 4. In Future posts we ll talk more about containers and how they can be deployed and used alongside this technology, but for now, enjoy building your new nested Hyper-V labs!

Car Rental Services Review

Car Rental Services: What to Look For

When comparing the top car rental companies, we looked at four main criteria: deals and services, types of rentals available, ease of use, and customer support. The best car rental services also offer hybrid vehicles and other fuel-efficient options for environmentally and economically conscious customers. Below is an explanation of the criteria we used to evaluate each car rental service.

Deals Services

A good car rental company has all the standard services you need for a seamless rental experience. The service having multiple locations across the United States is important if you are taking a road trip. You don’t want to be forced to adjust your travel plans around a location. Many companies offer the convenience of online reservation and check-in to avoid the hassles of long lines.

Some companies also offer extra services, such as infant car seat rental, prepaid tolls and GPS options, to make your life easier. It’s also nice to use a rental service that offers carbon offset programs, which shows it is a company concerned about issues bigger than itself.

We looked for sites that had a location finder on the homepage with a map, so you know exactly where to go to pick up your car. We prefer sites where a reservation tool is the first thing you see when you log in. We also looked for sites with a search tool, so you can find the information you need quickly.

Help Support

A car rental service should be easy to use and have the vehicles and services you need so you can enjoy your trip instead of dealing with car-rental headaches. You should be able to do as much of the reservation and check-in process online as you can so you spend less time at the reservation counter. The best rental services offer long-term and group rentals, along with options for protecting the environment. We found the services that will make your car rental experience affordable, practical and fun.
