12 keys to a good deal on a rental car

Cost-conscious travelers, whether on the road for business or pleasure, know that one place to shave trip-related expenses is at the rental car counter.

Michael Taylor, senior director of travel services for J.D. Power and Associates, a global marketing information and services firm, s ays people are looking closely at their rental car bills and shopping around more.

In many cases, these careful consumers discover rental car agents are eager to play “Let’s Make a Deal.”

But if you want to drive off with a real bargain, you need to know the rules of the renting game. These dozen tips will help you get the best deal.

1. Shop the Internet.

Internet sites sometimes have better deals because they are cheaper for the company to operate, says Jack Gillis, public affairs director for the Consumer Federation of America, a nonprofit advocacy group.

Look at multiple independent travel sites (three popular ones are Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz) and then review three car rental Web pages, says Gillis, author of “The Car Book.” Because of special arrangements, says Gillis, you’ll often find that one of the travel or car company sites will have a better deal.

2. Ask about discounts.

Frequent-flier programs, credit cards, hotels, national clubs and some companies and government agencies have negotiated discounts. Two popular groups that regularly offer membership breaks for renters are AARP and AAA. To be sure you don’t miss out on anything, Gillis says to always ask what discount plans are available.

3. Time your reservation.

Everything’s a trade off. By reserving early, you lock in your car and your rate. But if you rent your car before you book your airline or hotel, you might miss out on a reciprocal deal. So do a little research and ask a few questions before you book.

That said, several industry experts recommend booking your car as soon as possible. “It’s unlikely you’ll get burned [on rates],” says Justin McNaull, spokesman for AAA. “But if you wait, there is a significant chance you will not get the same choice of cars.”

If you want to book during peak periods, such as long holiday weekends, reserve six weeks ahead or you’ll be blocked out, says Neil Abrams, president of Abrams Consulting Group Inc. a consulting and market research firm specializing the auto rental and fleet industry. At other times of the year, the lead time varies with the company, he says. “I would say a couple of weeks is fine.”

4. Consider how long you need the car.

Although you need the car for only two days, you might get a better price if you rent it for longer. “Don’t be afraid to look at a weekly rate,” says McNaull. “It’s sometimes cheaper than a four- or five-day rental.”

Online renters should play with the date pairs and see if that extra day will net a better rate, he says, adding that sometimes travelers have to hook into a weekend or weekday to get “the deal.”

5. Look beyond the big guys.

Be willing to investigate lesser-known agencies, says Abrams. “There are many secondary brands that deliver a quality car at a competitive rate that are not necessarily household names.”

And if you like the staff or cars at one agency and the prices at another, ask your preferred agent to match a competitor’s price. The worst that can happen is a “no” and you lose nothing.

The 12 Most Expensive Cars at the New York Auto Show

From futuristic designs to energy-saving technologies, the New York International Auto Show is something of a who’s who of automotive geniuses.

The show opens to the public on Friday, but Mashable got a sneak preview of some of the most dazzling concept cars of the year — in terms of their capabilities and in terms of price.

It’s obvious some of these cars are not quite aimed at the average consumers — after all, price tags start at $800,000 for base models. But take some time to daydream a little and swoon over some of the most expensive cars we could find at this year’s show.

Most Expensive Cars at the New York Auto Show

Bugatti Veyron: $2.5 million

Koenigsegg Agera R: $1.6 Million

12 Best Family Cars of 2014

    Posted: 2/11/2014 9:16:03 AM

Finding the best family car means more than just counting seatbelts and cup holders. Even what qualifies as a “family car” isn’t so clear cut these days. Minivans are an obvious choice, but not if you don’t need all that space. SUVs are great, but that extra cargo room’s a waste if you don’t use it. Then there’s the good ol’ family sedan: Would you like that in regular midsize, or upgrade to full-size? On the flip side, just because something’s big on the outside doesn’t mean it’s useful for families inside. So we had our work cut out for us when we decided to identify the Best Family Cars available in America for 2014.

Happily, we had a good place to start. Based on our Expert Ratings of all the vehicles – more than 300 of them – that we test each year, we gathered the 21 vehicles from across classes we believed had the stuff to be top-shelf family haulers. The selection of the 21 was a rigorous process itself. Each of our nine editors received a list of candidates, then individually voted for up to 20 of them, and they were given the opportunity to nominate any additional vehicles that they felt should be included. We culled the responses, tallied the votes, and the vehicles that received four or more votes were invited to participate in our driving-and-usability test. We requested mainstream models from each manufacturer for our test, and most complied, although we did receive a few fully loaded exceptions. We were careful not to give added advantages to those heavily equipped vehicles, because we wanted the test to be as “real-world” representative as possible.

The resulting list included seven sedans, six small SUVs, five midsize SUVs, two minivans, and one hybrid wagon, from a total of 11 different brands. With these all on premises at our Kelley Blue Book offices our staff installed and uninstalled car seats, loaded up the cargo area with various objects, and even brought their kids down to climb in and out, and maybe test out the rear-seat entertainment. When we were done, we tallied up our results, compared notes, and picked what we thought were the best of the bunch.

Here, then, are the 12 Best Family Cars of 2014:

What did we learn? Certainly it is not surprising to most that the 2014 Honda Odyssey and 2014 Toyota Sienna minivans were at the top of everyone’s favorite family car lists, since the sole purpose of minivans is to be as good at family car duties as a Porsche 911 is at sports car ones. The assembled full-size SUVs also proved their mettle as popular family car choices, with the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder, 2014 Honda Pilot, 2014 Ford Flex and 2014 Chevrolet Traverse all winning honors. As a choice for smaller families, smaller SUVs demonstrated they had what it takes as well, with the 2014 Honda CR-V, 2014 Nissan Rogue, and 2014 Subaru Forester all making our list of honored vehicles.

What was surprising was the number of sedans that we feel qualify for the highest accolades as family cars. Once upon a time, sedans were the family car of choice before minivans and SUVs showed up on the scene. Yet the modern sedan still makes a fine family car, and the 2014 Honda Accord, 2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2014 Nissan Altima each impressed us enough to land spots on our list.

So what about the other nine on our original list of 21? Well, as you might surmise from the fact that we chose to nominate them, we believe they have many attributes that qualify them as good family-car choices. But compared to the vehicles that did make our honored Best Family Cars list, they were either lacking features available in the cars listed above or were too narrowly focused to provide the array of features that marked our top choices. That said, if you need excellent fuel economy, want to tow heavy loads, or just want to go farther off the beaten path, there are some solid alternatives worth checking out on the included list of what are essentially our semi-finalists.

    Car Rental Europe: 12 Tips

Avoiding frills and extras lowers the cost of your European car rental and prevents unnecessary headaches.

‘Keep it simple’ is good advice in many of life’s endeavors, including a Europe rental car. Avoiding frills and extras will avoid un-needed costs and headaches.

The best and most straightforward Europe rental car deal I know right now is in Germany. For under $200, including the 19% value added tax, you can get a compact car, VW Golf or similar with air-conditioning and four doors, for a full week. Book through the Gemütlichkeit Travel Department (800- 521-6722, or you can get an email quote ). That $230 price, however, can quickly escalate when you start adding such elements as extra drivers, automatic transmission, picking up the car in one country and dropping it in another, and so on. Such embellishments can also add a variety of complications.

Recently, a good customer wanted to rent a car in Dublin then drop it in London. Yes, that’s possible, we told her – provided you’re willing to spend several thousand dollars. But, since Avis, Hertz, National, Europcar, et al. simply won’t allow it, we would have to use a supplier that specializes in exotic rentals.

While that’s a rather extreme example, we hear every day from folks who, with a just a small adjustment, could save hundreds of dollars. The idea of picking up a car in Salzburg and dropping it somewhere in Germany is a case in point. Why not instead take a 10-minute train ride to Freilassing in Germany and begin your rental there? You’ll get the car at Germany rates which are much lower than Austria’s, avoid the $75-to-$300 international drop charge, and you won’t have to have the international driver’s license which is required to rent a car in Austria. Needless to say, this is a solution that’s worked for several customers.

Here are a dozen suggestions every would-be Europe car rental customer should consider when the making car rental decisions.

    Avoid Automatic Transmission

A compact cars with automatic transmission in Germany can be as much as 80 percent more than standard transmission. Germany is a fairly extreme case but cars with automatic transmission command a higher price everywhere in Europe

    Avoid Airport Pickups

Commence your rental at a European airport and you’re likely to pay a tax of 14% to 20%. Notable exceptions are France, Spain, Ireland, the U.K. and Holland where the airport and rail station charges are about $35 to $80. In Germany, on the other hand, the midsize VW Passat you can get at an off-airport location in Germany for $275 costs $330 at an airport or rail station, thanks to a 20% tax. This so-called “premium station” fee also often applies to rail stations. It’s worth noting there is no extra charge for dropping off a car at a “premium station.”

    Avoid Sunday Rentals

The vast majority of off-airport rental car locations in Europe are closed on Sundays, making it likely you have to pay an expensive airport pickup charge if you plan to start a rental on that day.

    Avoid Small Towns

Fewer cars to choose from and less savvy agents make renting a car in a small town a bit more adventurous than in Europe’s major cities. For example, the small-town rental agent is less likely to be familiar with your Auto Europe voucher and, as a result, you may find charges on your credit car bill you didn’t plan on (nothing, however, that can’t easily be resolved back in the U.S.). A bigger problem is the skimpy selection of cars. You may have a confirmed reservation for a car with automatic transmission but some smaller stations don’t have in them in their fleets; they are brought in on as-needed basis. Occasionally the system breaks down and when the renter arrives there simply is no automatic available. When that happens, the customer is left with what’s on hand and if there’s no automatic.

    Avoid Small Companies

Most of the rental cars in Europe belong to the “big” 3: Europcar, Avis, and Hertz. Sixt is big in Germany and growing rapidly elsewhere. National is mostly limited to major towns and airports. We recommend sticking with these five. If your car breaks down, you want to be as close to help – and a replacement car – as possible. Avis, for example, has more than 350 locations in Germany alone. Thrifty, on the other hand, has offices that the company says “serve airports in Munich, Düsseldorf, and Frankfurt” and “20 other suburban locations.” Suppose you’re somewhere up around the Baltic and the transmission in your Opel starts making noises like a wounded cat; would you rather it be an Avis or a Thrifty rental car? Make sure, too, that if you’re picking up a car at an airport, your chosen company really is at the airport. In Germany, for example, smaller suppliers such as Thrifty and Dollar require you to phone from the airport and request a shuttle ride to their off-airport location. That means you’ll ride the shuttle both ways, the start of the rental and at the end. For the most part, the major companies mentioned above all have rental counters and vehicles right at the airport; you’ll sign the contract and walk to your car.

    Avoid Full-Size and Larger Cars

If it’s a nicer car you want, then go for it, spend the money. But if it’s space you’re after, think twice before renting a full-size, luxury and premium category car. The price increase from midsize to full size is substantial. In Germany, the base price for a midsize station wagon is $219 without tax and $477 for a full size wagon. And, though most rental companies slot the BMW 320 wagon into the “full size” category, it has slightly less luggage space than the midsize Opel Vectra wagon. Read the myth of the full-size car.

    Stick With One Driver

Most, but not all, rental companies charge a fairly substantial fee if you want to list more than one driver on the rental contract. My foregoing “best deal” price of $230 is not so good if there will be more than one driver. Avis in Germany, for example, charges $20 a day to a max of $140 for additional drivers. Europcar in Germany allows immediate family members to drive free, and Sixt doesn’t charge at all in Germany for extra drivers.

Think Twice About International One-Way Rentals

Two problems with a one-way rental between countries: it can be expensive and sometimes is simply not possible. The one-way charge is always in addition to other rental charges and can range from around $70 to $4,000. At the lower end of the scale are one-ways between such cities as Munich and Zürich, Paris and Frankfurt. Figure anything involving Italy, former eastern- bloc countries, and Scandinavian countries will be expensive. If you decide to do an international one-way, stick to major cities. One-ways involving small cities are frequently not possible or much more expensive. Recently a customer slated to drop a Frankfurt car in Paris decided to instead leave it in Tours. The one-way fee went from $125 to $350. One-way rentals within the same country, however, are almost always free.

    Request a Diesel

Diesel engines are no longer noisy, smelly and underpowered and they get great mileage. The fuel is cheaper than gas in Europe and available at every service station. For the most part, you can’t guarantee a diesel but you lose nothing by asking and, depending on the country and vehicle, you have about a 50-50 chance of getting one. Important Tip: Be sure to fill up with fuel just before turning in the car. Rental companies in Europe are currently charging about double the gas station rate if they have to refuel returned vehicles.

Forget Having the Rental Car Delivered to Your Hotel

Yes, in past years this was a nice convenience that some rental companies offered as a free service. Now, however, you’ll pay at least $35 and what if the delivered car isn’t what you want? If you go yourself to the rental car station you’ll likely have a choice of cars.

Remember, Germany Has the Best Rental Car Deals

Though your itinerary may limit your choice, it’s still useful to know which countries have the best rental car rates. Generally speaking, Italy has the highest prices and Germany the lowest. Recently we had a customer who was flying to Florence via Munich. The car he wanted in Italy was going to cost him almost double what it would cost in Germany. He decided to ditch his Munich-Florence flights and drive to Italy from Munich.

Rely on a Credit Card for Collision Theft Insurance

This is old advice we’ve been handing out ever since credit card companies started insuring car renters who use their cards to pay for rental cars. The car rental company covers third-party liability and fire, but the renter is responsible for the car itself. You can purchase insurance offered by the rental company, but it’s expensive and has a high deductible, typically in the $750 to $2000 range. Your credit card is free and there is no deductible, you are simply reimbursed for any damage or loss – but be sure to check that your card offers CDW and theft coverage and that you decline the rental company’s offer of insurance. There is no choice, however, in Italy and Ireland, you must purchase the insurance.

Book your rental car in Europe with Gemütlichkeit’s travel department and get the best rates, personalized, knowledgeable service and our unique at-the-rental-counter safety net that ensures our customers get what they are promised. We book with all the major companies in more than 35 countries. If you have questions about rentals in Europe, or simply prefer to deal in-person, phone us at 800-521-6722.

FORT WORTH CENTER OF REHABILITATION, LLC

Amazing building, seriously very clean and taken care of compared to Most in the area! My mother in law was satisfied with care, therapy, and I loved that everyone from the kitchen to the medical supply manager checked on her frequently. Weekend staff was not the best always, but I was impressed with the therapy, most nurses, and over all care. No new wounds, No weight loss, and her wound from the hospital’s neglect healed with no issues! If you want nurses with heart, family oriented staff, and good care I say check it out! (rooms are nice but can feel small with a room mate) However I have seen smaller!

Beautiful building, but the food is horrible, care is at best minimal, staff talk in whatever there native language is. If anyone helps you they may not be able to understand what you are saying, or you understand what they are saying. There are 2 or 3 really sweet people here, but the others need to move along. My aunt’s bathroom was dirty when I left in the evening and the same nastiness was still there when I came back in the morning. Nurse aid said there wasn’t a housekeeper on at night. I guess an aid can’t wipe the toilet. If I had known that I would have done it myself. I would think twice before putting another family member here. Fortunately we are going home in a few days. Can’t wait!

I would not send my worst enemy here. ALL the nurses are rude, never have a smile on. Never washed their hands. Screamed at patients. Linens were never changed. Toilets and floors always dirty. Did not take any precautions to limit infectious bacteria spreading. Left my loved one in a wheelchair, twice, with no supervision and was found by family members just before he slid out of the chair. Did not turn him every 2 hours knowing he cannot turn himself. Didn’t check residual before feeding through feeding tube. CNAs had no experience and were asking me questions(if they even spoke to you). No common sense. No communication between nursing staff and rehab staff, so alot of wasted rehab time that insurance stops covering when the patient doesn’t show progress. Even after complaining to the case worker and director of nursing nothing was done to make changes. One of the doctors said all of this was known by everyone and we needed to make a complaint to the administrator, but said nothing would be done about it. We should have left the first day when no one came in to greet us or do an assesment of him. Come to find out even the hospital has this place on a do not send patients to status.

If there was a minus 10 ratig – that would be more appropriate – Horrible. For the second day in a row, I found my mother lying in bed with her and her sheets soaked in urine. The toilet was filled with feces and I know had was not flushed at least from 2 pm – 6 pm. After finally flushing 6 times, the toilet was still not clean and as housekeeping was not there on Satruday, I had to clean her toilet. There were also piles of feces in the floor of the visitor bathroom and on the wheel of my mother’s wheelchair.

By Marty Padgett. The Car Connection March 24, 2015

New York City might seem one of the most car-hostile environments on the planet, but it really isn’t. Take the city’s annual auto show as irrefutable proof of the opposite: New Yorkers love cars  so much, they’ll endure a subway ride to get to the Jacob Javits Convention Center to see cars they can’t even drive.

Half of New Yorkers may not even own a car, but the annual New York International Auto  Show is one of the best-attended in the country, and one of the oldest. And again this year, it’s one of the most important events on the automotive calendar, with more mass-market reveals and global introductions than even the Detroit Auto Show held just a few months ago.

Next week, the Internet Brands Automotive team will be on site to tell you more about the big news from Javits–in words, pictures, video. and social media. This week, we’re channeling our crystal ball to show you exactly what to expect as the curtains pull back during the show’s press days starting Monday. It’s a half-week jammed with dozens of press conferences, industry forums, symposiums, and award ceremonies.

Meanwhile, these are the most important new vehicles we’ll be bringing you from New York:

From futuristic designs to energy-saving technologies, the New York International Auto Show is something of a who’s who of automotive geniuses.

The show opens to the public on Friday, but Mashable got a sneak preview of some of the most dazzling concept cars of the year — in terms of their capabilities and in terms of price.

It’s obvious some of these cars are not quite aimed at the average consumers — after all, price tags start at $800,000 for base models. But take some time to daydream a little and swoon over some of the most expensive cars we could find at this year’s show.
