    about used cars

If you’ve come here looking for a used or certified pre-owned car, truck, SUV, crossover, hatchback, hybrid or convertible, then you’re in the right place. Edmunds has everything you need to know about buying or selling a used vehicle, including Carfax vehicle history reports, dealership listings and pricing information, expert car reviews, consumer car reviews, car dealership reviews, car price comparisons, car appraisal calculators, images and videos, technical features and specs, user forums and more.

At Edmunds, you’ll be able to browse thousands of used cars, trucks and SUVs for sale with special offers, appraise your current car, and research the car, SUV or truck of your dreams. You can limit your search to certified pre-owned (or CPO) vehicles for sale and be a click away from articles by our experts that will give you the best car shopping and buying tips and advice. Let’s take a closer look at each of these aids to easier used-car shopping.

The INVENTORY tab at the top of the page allows you to browse used cars for sale from popular makes such as Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Infiniti, Acura and Subaru. The inventory tool allows you to cast a much wider net than simply visiting your local dealership’s website. Start with the make and model of the vehicle that you’re interested in. You’ll have the option to refine your search by price, distance, model year and mileage. If you’re looking for specific options or features, a certain trim level or a specific color, there are more advanced search filters available, including engine type, fuel type, drivetrain, powertrain, airbags, air-conditioning and much more. After you find the car, SUV, truck or hybrid that you’re interested in, select the listing to check out the VIN details page for that vehicle and get more information. There you’ll find a description of the vehicle from the dealer, vehicle features and options, contact information for that dealership, dealer reviews, a ballpark insurance estimate, and a link to see a Carfax vehicle history report.

The APPRAISE tab at the top of the page lets you enter your car’s basic information, odometer reading, trim level, and overall condition. Then Edmunds provides you with the True Market Value (TMV) for your used car or vehicle. Edmunds’s True Market Value or used car value is is a great starting point for negotiation of a used-car sale between a private buyer and seller. This is an “as is” value that does not include any warranties. The final sales price depends on the car’s actual condition and local market factors. You can use this used car value estimate to price your car for sale or to negotiate a trade-in for a new, CPO, or previously owned car for sale from a local dealer. The used car value estimate is also useful for assessing retail pricing at a car dealer. You can try it out by clicking the “APPRAISE” tab, above. Once you enter your vehicle details, you will receive three estimates for your used car’s value: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you for your used car; “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the pre-owned vehicle yourself; and “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this used model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealership might sell it for as a certified pre-owned vehicle.

The RESEARCH tab points you to our expert analysis of the make and model of the car you select. You can read our editors’ reviews and learn about each generation of the vehicle you’re interested in. From there, you can narrow the focus of your car buying research by selecting a particular model year and learning more by checking out photos of the cars, researching local dealership listings, car valuation, consumer reviews, editors’ reviews, pros & cons, features & specs, and safety information. That’s a world of information. And we’ve put it all right at your fingertips.

Are you thinking about trading in your vehicle at the dealership or selling it yourself? Find out what your used car is worth with our True Market Value appraisal tool. Enter the year, make and model to get started. Make sure you know the options on your vehicle and the current odometer reading. Be honest about the condition level. Most cars will fall in the “average” to “clean” range.

The appraisal tool will give you three prices: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you. “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the vehicle yourself. “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealer might sell it for as a CPO vehicle.

If you are hesitant about buying a traditional used car, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. These vehicles tend to be newer, have gone through a more detailed inspection process and come with a limited warranty. The Edmunds inventory tool will have an option to sort the list to show only CPO vehicles. You can also go directly to the CPO cars page.

Explore Car-Buying Articles: If you’re unsure about the next steps in buying a used car — or car buying in general — Edmunds has research articles that can help. Take a look at those we’ve linked to on this page, or visit our research main page for a full list of articles that have been written by Edmunds car-shopping experts.

Do You Need Rental Car Insurance, rental car insurance.#Rental #car #insurance

When To Buy Rental Car Insurance

Do You Need Rental Car Insurance?

A common question for drivers who are traveling is whether they need to purchase additional car insurance for their rental cars. Often, no additional car insurance coverage is necessary because your rental car is already covered by either your credit card or current insurance coverage.

It is important, however, to verify that you are covered and to find out about any additional rental car insurance coverage that you might need.

    Am I Already Covered?

Your regular auto insurance policy likely already covers you if you are renting a car. If you live in a state that requires liability insurance and you cause an accident while driving your rental car, liability insurance would cover the costs of damages to the other car and injuries to the other car’s driver and passengers.*

This coverage also is likely to extend to additional drivers, although laws vary by state. In New York and California, for example, licensed spouses are covered to drive the rental car. You can also list additional drivers on the rental agreement, although companies may charge an extra daily fee.

    * Be aware that your regular insurance policy may not be valid if you are renting a car for business use.

Does My Credit Card Cover Me?

Many credit cards offer some coverage for rental cars (if the card is used to pay for the rental). Be sure to check the fine print; the card may only offer collision coverage, which covers property damage but not costs associated with injuries.

In many cases, the credit card company may offer additional rental car insurance (e.g, to pay for injuries) for a fee. The rates may be reasonable, but be sure that you do not pay extra for coverage that you already have from another source.

If your health insurance, for example, covers any injuries that you sustain in an auto accident, you would not need to purchase personal accident insurance for your rental from your credit card company. You may, however, need to purchase supplemental liability insurance to cover damages to another driver if you cause the accident (if your existing liability coverage doesn’t include rental cars).

Before you rent a car, call your credit card company to find out exactly what is covered.

Be sure to call each time you are about to rent a car to make sure that your coverage has not changed, since credit card auto insurance policies tend to change frequently. Also, verify that the coverage limit is high enough to adequately protect you.

Make sure you fully understand your coverage, so that you are not coerced into buying insurance you don’t need at the rental car office.

What Options Are Offered by Rental Car Companies?

Rental car companies tend to offer these optional types of rental car insurance coverage that you can purchase when you pick up your car. Keep in mind that you may already have these kinds of coverage from your car insurance, health insurance, or credit card company.

    • Collision damage waiver – When you’ve purchased this waiver, the rental car company will not charge you for a damaged or stolen vehicle.
    • Supplemental liability protection – Electing this insurance will ensure you’re covered for costs to others in an accident you cause in the rental.
    • Personal accident insurance – This coverage will pay for injuries or death of the driver and passengers of your rental car.
    • Personal effects coverage – This coverage reimburses you for stolen personal items while renting the car.

Does Rental Reimbursement Coverage Pay for Damages in a Rental?

Rental reimbursement coverage is entirely different from rental insurance. Rental reimbursement refers to a type of car insurance that is optional. This coverage allows for reimbursement for the cost of renting a car only when your own car is in the shop due to damage from an accident.

Rental reimbursement coverage does not pay for damages resulting from an accident in a rental car.

When you are driving a rental car and you are in an accident, liability insurance can cover the costs of repairs to the car and property, and medical bills for injuries to the other cars’ occupants, with collision coverage paying for the cost of damages to the rental car. However, you need to ensure your current liability and collision coverages apply to rental cars. If they don’t, your next step should be to check to see what your credit card covers (see below).

What Should I Do Before Renting a Car?

Step 1: Contact your car insurance company to make sure you understand your policy and what is covered when you rent a car.

Step 2: Contact your credit card company to find out what coverage it provides.

Step 3: Finally, bring your car insurance declaration page so you can present it to the rental company if any questions come up when you pick up your car.

That would put the Fusion behind the Accord.

Traditionally Ford has always been very optimistic on the mileage estimates for its hybrid vehicles!

This is the result when you simply use the marketing departments theoretical numbers for choosing the best car.

When you factor in the dismal Ford reliability I don t think so.

Who cares these cars are all ugly and slow

I run a 2.2 litre turbo diesel Saab 9-3 TiD. I can get 50+ urban and nearly the same (48) on the motorway. Due to the diesel, I lose 20hp over the Accord Hybrid but I can live with that. In addition, the road holding of a Saab is well known and it s built like a tank so I feel safer in that than many of the modern tin foil and plastic cars. Pity Saab don t make them any more but there are tons of good turbo diesel cars out there if you don t mind a bit of performance loss in return for massive fuel economy. personally, if it s comfortable, goes broom, broom and gets me where I want to go, who cares if it doesn t do 0-60 in half a second?

After driving a diesel and seeing it s economy, I ll never go back to petrol, hybrid or otherwise. A hybrid diesel on the other hand, well, that s another matter.

Usually, they are driven by a very experienced driver, take half an hour just to pull away from junctions, drive at 25 instead of 30 in town and 50 instead of 70 on the motorway. Driving like that, you can get all sorts of crazy MPG readings. That s the readings they tell you. That s why they use terms like urban and highway instead of actual speeds of 30 MPH and 70 MPH. I bet nobody can get 45 MPG at 70 MPH in the Accord Hybrid.

Now let s see the figures when it s driven like a racing car by an amateur driver as most new (read: Young) drivers do.

if i drive 100k miles @ 25mpg fuel cost is $10,000, if i get 40 mpg driving 100k miles fuel cost is $6250. so your saving $3750. on a car that costs double of a basic jetta? so your spending $16,250 more for better economy? where s the economy? where did you hide it? also a CVT transmission is double to repair over a regular auto trans but both cost much more than a standard shift to rebuild. Hybrid batteries will also cost a fortune when they need to be replaced as well but what we re selling is green, right? what kind of green? eco green or cash money green or the color green?

    (fuel at U.S. $2.50gal.)

Not everywhere in the world fuel has that price. Consider that here till recently we were charged 2 € per liter!

That s true. I drive a small 1.3 liter diesel Alfa and I regularly do 65 MPG.
