Daewoo Motor

If you are looking for Daewoo Motors you should know that they were sold to General Motors in 2001. For a while they are called GM Daewoo, but since 2011 they are now know as GM Korea.

Daewoo Motor was founded in 1937.

While Daewoo s never had much success in the United States, they certainly paved the way for other Korean cars such as Hyundai, Kia and Proto and Samsung (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_automobile_manufacturers#South_Korea ).

I personally really like the look of the new Hyundai models myself and may get one in the near future.

Daewoo Motor were very important South-Korean a motorcar company which is established in 1967. They produced small and fun compact auto’s at a time restricted for before encountering financial problems and going bankrupt.

In their successful days, Daewoo Motor were bound as highest in the South-Korean government both financially and political. At present, Daewoo still active in the different industries, but General Motor engines have many of their car-mobile departments which have been bought now out independently.

Automobile of GM Daewoo; GM Daewoo takes great pride in the fundamental role in the development of small total automobiles for GM around the globe.

About Daewoo

Daewoo was a South Korean conglomerate that started exporting cars in the mid-1990s. Like fellow South Korean “chaebols” Hyundai, Kia, Samsung, and LG, Daewoo produced a vast range of products and services with the significant support from the government, from electronics to ships to pipelines and refineries, and its company history dated back to the 1930s. But the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s pushed the heavily leveraged company beyond the brink, and Daewoo declared bankruptcy in 1999. Subsequently acquired as a subsidiary of General Motors, GM would soon abandon the tarnished Daewoo name in all markets save for South Korea and Vietnam.

Daewoo’s business model in the U.S. did away with commissioned salespeople and franchised dealerships and instead directed shoppers to visit the Daewoo website. Company-owned showrooms were established in nine states.

Three cars made up the initial Daewoo line in the U.S. and Canada. Entry-level was the Lanos, a bare-bones subcompact priced at just $8,749, available as a four-door sedan or three-door hatchback. The mid-sized Nubira came in sedan, hatchback, and station wagon configurations. The Camry-esque Leganza offered comfortable appointments and good handling at a competitive price point.

GM purchased the company in 2001, and Daewoo-badged cars would cease in most markets by about 2002. In established Daewoo markets where Chevrolet had no presence, the new parent company took the opportunity to introduce itself, and Daewoos simply became Chevys.

In the U.S. the subcompact hatchback Chevy Aveo is a Daewoo Gentra, previously known as the Daewoo Kalos, released in 2002. The Pontiac G3 Wave was another rebadged version, produced In Canada, now known there as the Suzuki Swift.

The first GM Daewoo released was the Lacetti, offered as a Pininfarina-styled sedan or hatchback, or Giorgetto Giugiaro-styled station wagon. The Lacetti was sold around the world under many different nameplates. In the U.S. it was sold as the Suzuki Forenza and Reno, slotted between the Aerio and Verona. The second-generation Lacetti was released in 2008, now called the Lacetti Premiere, but known in most markets as the Chevrolet Cruze.

The Winstorm is Daewoo GM’s first SUV, introduced in 2006. Like the Lacetti, it is sold in various markets around the world under many different badges.

In January of 2011, GM Daewoo announced that it would be changing its name. Going forward, the company will simply be known as GM Korea Co. GM Korea vehicles are sold on six continents around the world in 150 markets, branded variously as Suzukis, Holdens, Opels, Vauxhalls, and Chevrolets.. View more

DAEWOO Cars and Brand History

GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GM Daewoo or GMDAT) was first established as National Motor in 1937 in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, South Korea. After changing its name to Saenara Motor in 1962, Saenara Motor was bought by Shinjin Industrial in 1965, which changed its name to Shinjin Motor after establishing collaborations with Toyota. After Toyota s withdrawal in 1972, Shinjin Motor started a joint venture with General Motors under the name General Motors Korea, but was renamed again in 1976 to Saehan Motor. After the Daewoo Group gained control in 1982 the name was changed to Daewoo Motor. In the early 1990s the company started to expand heavily throughout the world. Until 1996 all cars were based on models from General Motors. After the Asian financial crisis started in 1997, it took over the troubled jeep specialist SsangYong in 1998, but ran into financial trouble in 1999. In 2001 G. Read full DAEWOO history

Top 10 cars with best MPG for under $10, 000 – Testing Autos

Top 10 cars with best MPG for under $10,000

TA Editor Aug 4th, 2014 Comments Off

Paying too much at the pump? We have a few best-mpg cars for you. For reference, an average car on American roads gets around 20 miles per gallon, which is approximately $2,800 per year in fuel costs. In this list, we only considered autos priced from $7,500 to $10,000 that you actually can find for sale in US.

2000-2010 Honda Insight

The iconic first-generation Honda Insight is rare, but it s unfair not to include it. The Insight tops all other hybrids in terms of fuel economy and yes, you still can find a few of them in the US for under $10,000. The 2001 Insight with a 5-speed manual transmission is rated at 48/60 MPG. this is the best MPG you can get for this price. An estimated annual fuel cost: $1,000 . Honda Insight is a two-seater hybrid with a 3-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor; it s  available with a manual or continuously variable transmission.

2003-2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Honda Civic hybrid is pretty much like a regular Civic only with a different powertrain and a hybrid battery pack in the back. The Civic hybrid shuts the engine off as you stop and turns it on almost seamlessly as you start driving. The Civic hybrid handles well and is pretty quick. For under $10,000, you can find either first- or second-generation Civic hybrid. The 2007 Civic hybrid with a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission is rated at 40/45 MPG. The cost of fuel is estimated at $1,250 per year.

2001-2008 Toyota Prius

The Prius is not only the best-selling hybrid, it s also the most technologically-advanced one. It is widely available for under 10K. The Prius is extremely reliable and costs very little to maintain. The 2004+ second-generation Prius is very roomy and offers plenty of cargo space. The 2005 Toyota Prius is rated at 48/45 MPG city highway. Many owners report that it s fairly easy to get up to 52 MPG even out of a 10-year old Prius. With 15,000 miles driven per year, an annual fuel cost is estimated at $1,150 .

2001-2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Diesel

As a typical German sedan, the Jetta offers a classy interior and excellent handling. The 1.9L turbo-diesel  packs plenty of torque and pulls away lively from a stop. Although rated not better than average for reliability, the Jetta TDI is known to last very long with proper maintenance. You may have to drive out of state to get one of those. The Golf TDI is the same car in a hatchback body. The 2004 Jetta TDI with a manual transmission is rated at 32/42 MPG . Estimated annual fuel cost: $1,600 .

2001-2005 Honda Civic

The 6-th generation Honda Civic is widely available on the used car market for this price. A 5-speed model gets better gas mileage and is more reliable. The Civic is dependable and won t cost you much to maintain. It offers sporty handling and a fairly roomy, comfortable cabin. The 2002 Honda Civic with a 1.7L engine and a manual transmission is rated at 28/36 MPG city/highway, with an estimated annual fuel cost: $1,700 .

2000-2006 Volkswagen Beetle TDI

The Beetle, styled after the famous VW Bug of the 60 s, is a sure eye catcher. Under the Beetle s hood you will find the same torquey 1.9-liter turbo diesel as in the Jetta. Although it s not rated very well for reliability, the Beetle handles beautifully and is fun to drive. The 2005 5-speed Beetle TDI diesel is rated at 32/41 MPG city/highway. With 15,000 miles driven per year, an annual fuel cost is estimated at $1,650 .

2007-2012 Toyota Yaris

Small from the outside, the Yaris is actually roomy and practical on the inside. It s very reliable and costs little to maintain. If you can live with its small size and budget-styled cabin, it s a nice comfortable car to drive. The 2012+ Yaris has a much nicer interior. You won t have any troubles finding Toyota Yaris priced within $10,000 in the US. The 2007 Yaris with a manual transmission is rated at 29/36 MPG city/highway. An annual fuel cost is estimated at: $1,650 . The automatic model is not too far behind at 29/35 MPG .

2007-2010 Honda Fit

Similar to Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit is a very practical subcompact. The Fit is also very roomy inside; the rear seat cushions flip up giving Honda Fit enough space to fit a 46-inch TV (hence the name). Honda Fit has a sporty firm ride and responsive handling. The Fit is reliable and easy to maintain.  The EPA estimated fuel economy for the 2009 Honda Fit automatic is 28/35 MPG city/highway. With 15,000 miles driven per year, your annual fuel cost should be around: $1,700 .

2002-2010 Toyota Corolla

Known for its reliability, the Corolla offers a comfortable cabin and very smooth and quiet ride. The 1.8-liter four-banger is not a rocket, but it can last very long with regular maintenance. Ownership costs are minimal. You won t have much troubles finding a used Toyota Corolla for under $10,000 in the US.  The 2008 Corolla with a 5-speed manual transmission is rated at 28/37 MPG. The 2009 Corolla automatic gets 27/35 MPG with an estimated annual fuel cost: $1,750 .

Craigslist Used Cars

Craigslist Used Cars

For buyers who are looking for a great deal on their next set of wheels, looking at Craigslist used cars will undoubtedly provide many options.  It is important when looking for a used car to be on the lookout for scams in addition to being careful not to buy into a bad situation with a vehicle that’s not all that the seller claims it to be.  Read below for some detailed tips on looking for your next used car on Craigslist.

Safety first-Follow the tips below to keep yourself safe from dangerous situations:

  • Never go alone, always bring a friend or family member
  • Meet in a public area-always!  Even if you meet the seller again at a later date, always keep all meetings public

Finding Good Craigslist Used Cars

Looking to Craigslist used cars for your next vehicle can be an exciting venture but it’s important to know how to sort through the ads effectively so that you can really find the car that you have been looking for.  It may be easiest to search by make and model, but you can also search by mileage or even “single owner” if you’re looking for a classic or hard to find vehicle that may appeal to collectors.

It’s also very easy to search for vehicles based on cost.  Searching by car that only have photos is a great way to weed out the slew of sellers who are not serious enough to put a photo of the vehicle on ad.

Additionally, be sure that the photo is an actual photo of the car, not an image copied/pasted from a car lot ad or manufacturer website.  Always ask the seller, after dialogue has been established, if they have any other photos of the vehicle, inside and out.

What to Look for in a Good Used Car

Mileage When it comes to mileage, you may need to do some math.  Estimate 10k-15k miles per year for the age of the vehicle.  If the mileage is much more than that you may want to ask what kind of traveling the car was used for.  Was it a lot of highway miles or a lot of stop and go?

Bodywork The last thing you want is a salvaged car with homemade bodywork to try to sell off to an unsuspecting victim.  Be sure to check with the Department of Motor Vehicles for your state to see if the title is salvage and check under the car at major points including the axel where a lot of body work is bonded to make it appear like a usable vehicle.  It may be a great deal but not if the car doesn’t last.

Modifications If there are modifications made to the body of the car this can affect the way the vehicle handles and may affect any warranties that may apply.  Be sure to ask for all maintenance records and inspect for body modifications.

Tire Wear Are the tires new or well worn.  This can become another expense after the car is purchased.  Some sellers may even put older tires on a car they are selling if they think they can sell the good tires on their own for a few bucks.  If the tires are considerably worn down ask the seller if they can negotiate on a lower price to help you cover the cost of new tires.

Test drive After checking out the above, it’s time to take the vehicle for a test drive.  Be sure to test drive on different surfaces and always include a little stop and go as well as taking the vehicle on the freeway or highway for a couple of exits.  It’s important to know how the car will react when pushed a little on the highway, especially if it was formerly a commuter vehicle with a lot of in-town mileage and stop and go.  You need a car that will effectively meet your needs.

Important Sales Process Tips When Buying A Used Vehicle

For those buyers who are wanting to buy in cash, it may be better to go with the seller in the vehicle (good opportunity for more test driving) to a local Money Tree or bank to get money orders with them in your presence.  We actually took this approach when selling our car before moving across the country. It provides a record of sale and the teller will check the bills for fake money.  So it’s a win-win.

If it’s a title transfer, meet at the bank where the title is held.  Don’t wait or count on the seller to do this.  It’s best to get all finalities of the sale done together.  These are simple requests to be made to the seller, if their recommendations on how the transactions sound shady, it’s best to just walk away.

In conclusion, Craigslist used cars provides many great deals for people who are willing to put in some time and effort to researching their next vehicle.   Always use caution when meeting in person and know what you are looking for before you meet with the seller.  By following our tips you can confidently navigate through the Craigslist used cars site for your next used car.

Cruising for Car Rental Deals

#best car rental deals

Cruising for Car Rental Deals

On a recent four-day trip to a small regional airport in New England, I had two choices for my car rental: Avis and Hertz. But knowing my options didn’t help me find a good price — at least not right away. One major booking site quoted me $75 and $55 per day respectively, while a name-your-price site couldn’t get me under $35 a day.

My situation isn’t an unusual one; car rental deals can be notoriously hard to find, especially if you’re only searching in a few places. However, doing some more intensive comparison shopping can offer some of the greatest and most sensible savings available to the average traveler. Because brand and name recognition don’t matter too much when you’re renting a car — a Hyundai two-door is a Hyundai two-door, whether you rent it from Avis, Orbitz or Enterprise — it’s easy to keep your options open and increase your chances of getting a good deal.

If you’re willing to put in the time and research, it turns out that there are more hidden deals on rental cars than any other part of the travel experience. Take my New England rental: After my first unsuccessful searches, I kept at it, using some of the tactics below — and the effort paid off when I booked a reservation for $54 total. That’s about $13 a day, and cheaper for the whole trip than it looked like I might pay for the first day!

Clearly, there are some great deals out there. But how can you find them?

Major Booking Sites

While many of the options I will outline below have the potential to trump the big sites, the major booking sites — Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz — are still a good place to start your search. When appropriate, searching on “Flight and Car” together, or better yet “Flight and Hotel and Car,” will help you tap into the universe of vacation package and bundled discounts. These can be both compelling and competitively priced, especially with the added attraction of one-stop, time-efficient shopping.

Read on, however, and you’ll see that the big booking sites are probably best used to get a sense of the lay of the land. In my research for this article, I would estimate that nine times out of 10 I could find a slightly better deal on a rental car elsewhere. In some cases the savings were along the lines of about five bucks a day, which is not necessarily a deal breaker for the convenience of booking a car and being done with it — but if you’re seeing very high daily rates, as I did in several searches, it’s time to look elsewhere.

The First 10 Minutes of Your Car Rental

In past years, aggregator sites such as Kayak.com were mostly good for airline flights, and few travelers used them for much more than that. Times are changing. Aggregators like Kayak and CarRentals.com are probably the best place to figure out the range and location of the best car rental deals; the snapshot you can get of car rental rates is quite impressive.

A search on Kayak displays prices not only by rental company and airport, but by car class as well. And where you can toggle airlines and nearby airports and on and off when doing flight searches, you can do the same for car classes and rental companies for car rental searches. Kayak also lets you filter results by price range and options like automatic transmission and unlimited miles, and permits you to open up your search to include off-airport rental companies, where savings can be significant.

Discount Codes and Coupons

You may have noticed that most rental car reservation sites ask if you have a special discount code, but how many times have you used one? Where does one get these codes anyway? For starters, you can find some in our discount car rental deals. where we post new car rental deals every week. Additionally, Web sites with “secret discount codes” and online coupons have cropped up all over the place. Here are a few:

  • DealLocker.com
  • DealTaker.com
  • KeyCode.com
  • RetailMeNot.com

A simple Google search for “Avis promo code” or “Hertz discount code” can also yield productive results.

The Eight Best U.S. Road Trips

Buy Direct

In my experience, ultimately you will most often get the best rate when booking directly from the car rental company Web site. Armed with price ranges and discount codes after checking the aggregators and coupon sites, a visit to the car rental’s own reservations Web site is well worth your time, as very few of your alternatives will consistently produce a lower price.

And when you do receive a rate quote, make sure you are not missing some of the hidden costs of car rentals, such as airport concession fees, sales tax, automatically applied insurance, and more; a recent study by Travelocity found that major U.S. airports tacked on an average of 25.8 percent of your total bill in local and state taxes. For more information, see our report on Car Rental Hidden Costs.

So while a Hyundai may always be a Hyundai, no matter where you rent it, there is money to be saved by expanding your horizons when making car rental reservations — if you know where to look.

2016 Mazda MX-5 By BBR

The popular Mazda Miata has received several aftermarket upgrades throughout its life time, but very few companies can brag about having pumped more power into the Japanese roadster. One such firm is Britain s BBR, which in 2015 celebrated 25 years of MX-5 upgrades. And it did so by releasing three separate updates for the fourth-generation ND model.

It s been nearly a year since BBR unveiled a 200-horsepower MX-5, and the British tuning company is finally accepting orders for its brand-new packages. Like in the past, BBR won t meddle with the roadster inside and out, but its upgrades will give the engine up to 190 horsepower to send to the rear wheels. The packages enhance both the 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines available in Europe, while various chassis options help keep the uprated sports car on its best behavior on both the road and the track.

All upgrades keep the engine naturally aspirated, but if previous BBR-tuned Miatas are any indication, a turbocharged model should also be underway. Until that happens, let s have a closer look at the program that will likely make many ND-generation MX-5 owners very happy.
