What exactly can I expect from the Medical Assistant Program?

The Medical Assistant program is designed to train students in all of the relevant aspects of medical office management including reception, booking appointments, records management, informatics, insurance billing, preparing patients for physical examinations, and minor surgeries, performing specialized medical tests including urinalysis, and collecting biological specimens, phlebotomy, EKG, limited X Rays, and processing and recording pharmacological data. Graduates of this program will be prepared and possess the skills and hands on experience to work at the entry level in medical offices, clinics and various medical practices. This program is also offered via online where more than 50% of courses are offered either online or via hybrid delivery.

Since you will be working in the medical field with patients, you will need to be able to pay attention to detail which will be part of your courses taught during your medical assisting program.

  • On campus day classes
  • On campus evening classes

Due to the need for hands on learning, your class sizes will be relatively small. You will have assigned coursework that will allow you to make the most of your medical assistant program.

Once you finish the coursework, you will have the option of taking a statewide exam to become certified.

All programs will teach you the skills of medical assisting.

Our graduates may find employment at medical clinics, hospitals, physician’s offices, and even in healthcare facilities for specialized medicine such as optometry, gynecology, and pediatrics. Do I need to be certified?

No, you do not need to be certified, but Florida Vocational Institute strongly advises all of our students to take the medical assistant certification exam (CCMA), which we administer at our learning facility.


Obtaining your medical assistant certificate is more than just training and learning from a book. You will need to be professional in order to succeed as a medical assistant and you will want to have all of the qualities that employers look for such as politeness and maintaining a neat appearance. An employer will look for someone who can follow directions, understand the importance of HIPAA, and help patients feel comfortable during their visits to the doctor. Medical assistants are required to be able to complete multiple tasks everyday while on the job. While some tasks will completely dependent on the work setting that you have chosen the same skills will still apply. Some medical assistants will be in charge of maintaining a medical office that is both organized and efficient. On the other hand, there are medical assistants who will be hired and trained to work directly with patients and perform clinical duties.

Once you have completed your coursework, you begin an internship or externships. This is program that usually last 3 to 6 weeks and will allow you to put the skills that you have learned through your medical assistant courses to work in the real world. You can complete this internship in the front office, the back office, or both.

During this part of your program, you will be able to work with real patients and you will be using all of the information that you have learned through your courses. In your medical assistant career, you will want to do your best work possible to receive a high grade from your supervisor. For this reason, you will need to treat it like a real job.
