And the consequences are very close to home.
Robert Sugden’s latest scheming has horrifying consequences in Emmerdale next week, as he sets in motion a chain of events that leads to a shock car accident.
The bad boy is back to his old tricks when he starts drugging Lawrence White (John Bowe) with sleeping pills, hoping to keep him away from Home Farm for as long as possible.
Upcoming episodes will see Robert step in to help Rebecca with the business after Lawrence is admitted to hospital following an accident.
Robert enjoys every second of being back in a position of power at the estate, but when he hears that Lawrence is due back home, he decides to sneakily keep him out of action for a while longer.
Sadly, Robert’s actions lead to repercussions that he never could have imagined when Lawrence wakes up feeling drowsy after having his bottle of brandy spiked with the sleeping pills.
Lawrence overhears commotion nearby as a zombie fun run is taking place, but when he gets into his car to investigate further, he’s clearly in no fit state to drive.
Tired and confused, Lawrence ends up speeding straight towards Belle, Lachlan and Victoria, who are all involved in the zombie event.
While Lachlan and Belle manage to get out of the way, Lawrence crashes straight into Victoria’s stall and leaves her injured. And yes, that makes it Lawrence’s second accident in a fortnight!
Ryan Hawley, who plays Robert, revealed: “By this point, Lawrence has already had an accident and Chrissie has left Home Farm, so Rebecca is running the business on her own and she’s in over her head. Rebecca knows that Robert has experience working there, so she asks him for his help.
“Robert reluctantly agrees and tries to make sure that Home Farm doesn’t go under! But he also starts slipping sleeping medication into Lawrence’s drink. The reason he’s doing that is so that Lawrence will be drowsy and it’ll slow down his recovery from the accident.
“Robert wants more control at Home Farm. Basically it’s to get Lawrence out of the way, so he can manipulate Rebecca more easily.
“I think Robert’s always had that ruthless, self-serving side to him as a character. Now he’s not with Aaron, who brought out that softer side to him, we’re starting to see more of the old Robert. I guess he just wants as much as he can get, really!”
Discussing the crash drama, Ryan continued: “Robert will feel very guilty. At the end of the day, although he may do things that are morally questionable, he does still have feelings for the people that he cares about like Aaron and Victoria.
“He’s going to feel guilty, but no-one sees that he’s been putting the medication into Lawrence’s drink, so there’s no ramifications or consequences of that. It’s just his own guilt, knowing he caused it.”
Ryan also offered his take on Robron’s current dramas, with Robert and Aaron still living apart following their recent break-up.
He said: “Robert is out on his own, he’s not living with Aaron anymore, but he’s living at the B B. He still sees Aaron occasionally and he still really cares about him, but he has to accept that Aaron doesn’t want to be with him and Aaron needs his time to be on his own.”
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
