10 Things You Should Know About Buying Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-Term Care is Different From Traditional Medical Care
Someone with a prolonged physical illness, a disability or a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer s disease often needs long-term care. Long-term care services may include help with daily activities, home health care, respite care, hospice care, adult day care, care in a nursing home or care in an assisted living facility.

Long-Term Care Can be Expensive
The cost depends on the amount and type of care you need and where you get it. In 2001, the national average cost of nursing home care was $56,000 per year, assisted living facilities reported $22,476 per year and home care costs ranged from $12,000 to $16,000 per year.

You Have Options When Paying for Long-Term Care
People pay for long-term care in a variety of ways. These include using personal resources, long-term care insurance and Medicaid for those who qualify. Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance and health insurance you may have at work usually will not pay for long-term care. Long-term care insurance will pay for some or all of your long-term care.

Decide Whether Long-Term Care Insurance is for You
Whether you should buy a long-term care insurance policy will depend on your age, health status overall retirement goals, income and assets. For instance, if your only source of income is a Social Security benefit or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you probably should not buy long-term care insurance since you may not be able to afford the premium. On the other hand, if you have a large amount of assets but do not want to use them to pay for long-term care, you may want to buy a long-term care insurance policy. Many people buy a policy because they want to stay independent of government aid or the help of family. They don t want to burden anyone with having to care for them. However, you should not buy a policy if you can t afford the premium or are not sure you can pay the premium for the rest of your life.

Pre-Existing Condition Limitations
A long-term care insurance policy usually defines a pre-existing condition as one for which you received medical advice or treatment or had symptoms within a certain period before you applied for the policy. Some companies look further back in time than others. Many companies will sell a policy to someone with a pre-existing condition. However, the company may not pay benefits for long-term care related to that condition for a period after the policy goes into effect, usually six months. Some companies have longer pre-existing condition periods or none at all.

Know Where to Look for Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance is available to you in several different forms. You can buy an individual policy from a private insurance company or agent, or you can buy coverage under a group policy through an employer or association membership. The federal government and several state governments offer long-term care insurance coverage to their employees, retirees and their families. You can also get long-term care benefits through a life insurance policy. Some states have long-term care insurance programs designed to help people with the financial impact of spending down to meet Medicaid eligibility standards. Check with your state insurance department or counseling program to see if these policies are available in your state.

Check With Several Companies and Agents
Contact several companies and agents before you buy a long-term care policy. Be sure to compare benefits, the types of facilities covered, limits on your coverage, what is not covered and the premium. Policies from different insurance companies often have the same coverage and benefits but may not cost the same. Be sure to ask companies about their rate increase history and whether they have increased the rates on the long-term care insurance policies.

Don t be Misled by Advertising
Most celebrity endorsers are professional actors paid to advertise, not insurance experts. It is also important to note that Medicare does not endorse or sell long-term care insurance policies, so be wary of advertising that suggests Medicare is involved. Do not trust cards you get in the mail that look like official government documents until you check with the government agency identified on the card.

Make Sure the Insurance Company is Reputable
To help you find out if an insurance company is reliable, you can take the following actions: Stop before you sign anything, call your state insurance department and confirm that the insurance company is licensed to do business in your state. After you make sure they are licensed, check the financial stability of the company by checking their ratings. You can get ratings from some insurer rating services for free at most public libraries.

Review Your Contract Carefully
When you purchase long-term care insurance, your company should send you a policy. You should read the policy and make certain you understand its contents. If you have questions about your insurance policy, contact your insurance agent for clarification. If you still have questions, turn to your state insurance department or insurance counseling program.

Mystery Shopper America #tampa #internet #providers

#

A mystery shopper (also called a secret shopper) is someone who gets paid to visit a store or restaurant and secretly evaluate things like customer service, store cleanliness and product quality. After the visit, the secret shopper fills out a brief questionnaire (shopper report) describing their shopping experience and gets paid for their time and opinions. The business owner then uses the information the mystery shopper has given them to make any necessary improvements in their store or service. The importance of customer service has turned mystery shopping into a $1.6 billion a year industry.

Mystery shopper jobs pay well and quite often, the secret shopper is treated to free merchandise and free meals as part of the job. A secret shopping career can be very exciting, and for those who love to shop and dine out – it’s the perfect job that offers fun assignments and flexible schedules.

History of Mystery Shopping

Mystery shoppers were first employed in the 1940s as a mechanism to measure employee integrity. Tools used for secret shopping assessments are generally simple questionnaires. Most secret shopper companies administer through the Internet, allowing potential mystery shoppers to register for participation and find mystery shopping jobs online.

The most common venues for a mystery shop are retail stores, movie theatres, restaurants, fast food chains, banks, gas stations, car dealerships, health clubs, and more. Virtually any context where there is a customer/business interaction is open to mystery shopping.

Retail evaluations in popular chain stores like Macy’s account for roughly 35% of all mystery shopping revenue.

Methods of a Secret Shopper

Secret shoppers are often given assignments to simply test the service skills of the employees. Some of the common things secret shoppers will be looking for include:

– how long it takes before the secret shopper is greeted
– how was the secret shopper treated during their visit at the location
– cleanliness of location and employees
– quality and taste of meal served
– selection of products/food and prices
– speed and efficiency of service

After the visit, the secret shopper will then submit their opinions about their shopping experience. That information is then reviewed and analyzed by the business to find areas in their service that need improvement.

Approximately 32% of all mystery shopping assignments are for dining establishments. Famous for its delicious food,
friendly service, great atmosphere and cleanliness, the Cheesecake Factory is always a favorite with mystery shoppers.

Connecticut Drunk Driving Fines Penalties

Disclaimer: We try to keep the information provided here up to date. However, laws often change, as do their interpretation and application. Different jurisdictions within a state may enforce the laws in different ways. For that reason, we recommended that you seek the advice of a local attorney familiar with DUI cases in your area.

Can you plead to a lesser offense than DUI in Connecticut?

A defendant might receive a “wet reckless ,” or a conviction of reckless driving involving alcohol, as a result of a plea bargain in which a charge of drunk driving is reduced to a case of reckless driving. There is no statutory provision on whether a wet reckless plea bargain will be accepted in Connecticut, but it’s possible a lawyer may be able to create a plea bargain for you.

Drinking and Driving Laws in Connecticut

The State of Connecticut has drunk driving laws that address driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Like many other states around the country, Connecticut has a lower blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers under the age of 21. It is illegal for a minor to drive with a BAC of .02 percent or above. Adult drivers are considered legally intoxicated if their BAC is .08 percent and above.

How many drinks does it take to reach the legal limit in Connecticut? There isn’t one right answer to this question. Each driver has individual attributes that may impact the number of drinks that it takes to become legally drunk. Many factors, including weight, age and number of drinks consumed within a given time frame, all contribute to a drivers blood alcohol concentration (BAC). One study showed that one drink could raise your BAC by .05 percent. Keep in mind that in Connecticut you can be prosecuted for a DUI without being chemically tested, and you may be arrested without any direct evidence if your ability to drive has been “affected to an appreciable degree”.

The best answer is not to drink and drive. The State of Connecticut has strict laws for drunk driving, and when you drink and drive in Connecticut, you risk your freedom, finances and your future.

Many industries tend to only work in one medium. For example, the CPA affiliate marketing industry runs a lot on AIM. Programmers on the other hand love IRC. Having Pidgin makes managing virtual communication a cinch.

Tool #4: Mindmeister

http://www.mindmeister.com Mindmeister allows you to create and share mindmaps on the web. These mindmaps can then be shared with other people on your team, who can also edit and add to those mindmaps.

A lot of research has been done on how mindmaps work with the brain. People retain mindmaps much better than linear notes. They’re a versatile tool for taking notes, making plans or brainstorming.

Tool #5: Google Docs

http://docs.google.com Google Docs allows you to collaborate on documents with others in real time. Any document that’s shared with other people can be accessed by them at any time. The moment you make any changes to that document, the changes will be reflected on the other person’s screen. You can literally take notes in a document and have those notes appear in real time halfway around the world. For documents like word files or spreadsheets, Google Docs is a fantastic sharing tool.

Tool #6: Dropbox

https://www.dropbox.com Dropbox allows you to create a shared folder that can be accessed by everyone on your team. Any files added to Dropbox will automatically be uploaded to Dropbox. It works just like any other folder on your computer, except the upload is automatic. You don’t have to worry about sending files to others or backing anything up – It’s all done for you. Likewise, any new files uploaded by co-workers is automatically downloaded as well.

Tool #7: Google Drive

https://drive.google.com Google Drive is Google’s version of Dropbox. It aims to provide much of the same functionality as Dropbox, as well as contain all your Google Docs files.

At the time of this writing, Google Drive provides about double what Dropbox does for the same price. That said, Google Drive doesn’t quite have the same functionality as Dropbox yet. Only time will tell which is the better tool.

Tool #8: YouSendIt

https://www.yousendit.com If you need to send a large file quickly and don’t have time to get someone to signup for and install Dropbox, use YouSendIt. This allows you to send large files (up to 250 MB) for free. Most email clients only allow you to send files up to 25 MB. If you’re sending a large document or file, YouSendIt makes it easy. All you need to do is upload the file and YouSendIt will send the other person a link with your file in it.

Tool #9: Skype

http://skype.com As far as real time team collaboration goes, there’s no better tool than Skype. Skype has just about everything you could want from a messaging and chat service. First, you have text chat. That’s great for quick messages and requests. You can easily call team members if you need to talk about something more complex. Video chat enables even better communication. Screen sharing lets you show others exactly what you’re talking about. If you’re looking for a versatile tool to communicate with the rest of your virtual team, Skype is often the best answer.

Tool #10: Hootsuite

http://hootsuite.com One of the toughest things to co-ordinate online is a social media strategy that’s run by multiple people. For example, let’s say you’re running a contest. The prize announcements are handled by one person, the updates by another and the personality by yet another person. How do you co-ordinate it all? Hootsuite makes this easy. Hootsuite allows you to access all your social media accounts all in one screen. You can schedule posts to go out in the future rather than post them all right now. Best of all, the account can be managed by multiple people. For example, the person responsible for the prize can upload tweets about what the prizes are without sending them. The person responsible for the personality can look over the announcements and rewrite them to make sure they’re in line with the brand. Then and only then are the tweets sent. If you’re managing a multi-person social media strategy, give Hootsuite a try.

These ten online collaboration tools will make managing any kind of virtual team a whole lot easier. Whether you’re running a two-person business or a business with hundreds of staff, the tools available here can help you streamline your processes and increase productivity.

Have a collaboration or document sharing tool you like to use? Please leave a comment below on what works and what doesn t in your workflow.

Air Conditioner Motors

Air conditioner motors are some of the crucial components that are required in the operation of the air conditioning in your house. We will discuss the various types of single-phase motors that are used in your equipment at home. Here are four types of electric motors that are commonly being used.

Split-Phase Air Conditioner Motor

This is the simplest design where the RUN winding and START winding are connected in parallel and 90° electrically apart. It is usually used in small pumps, fans and blowers where the capacity is below 1 horsepower. It has a low starting torque but high starting current. Since the torque is low, the ability to start the motor is only practical for low load condition.

The RUN winding is make from bigger diameter wire and shorter turn for lower resistance and high inductance properties. The START winding is make from smaller diameter wire for higher resistance and low inductance properties.

When power is connected to the motor, both the windings will be energized with the current in the RUN winding lags the current in the START winding by about 30° electrically. This out-of-phase effect on the stator produces a starting torque and causes the rotor to start rotating.

Typically the speed of the motor is 1800 rpm or 3600 rpm when running without any load. When the load is connected, the speed can go down to 1725 rpm and 3450 rpm respectively.

The no-load speed of the motor is given by:

Speed(rpm) = (Frequency of AC power X 120)/number of poles

For example, if your supply is 60 Hz and the motor is using two-pole, the synchronous speed = (60X120)/2

= 3600 rpm

There is a switch known as centrifugal switch which is connected in series with the START winding. This mechanical switch will open when the motor speed reaches 75% of the rated speed typically within 2 seconds. Once the switch opened, the START winding in circuit is disconnected.

This is to protect the START winding from overheating. When the motor is powered off, the switch will close the circuit to get ready for the next starting of the motor.

These days, electronic relay is also being widely used to disconnect the START winding.

Capacitor-Start Air Conditioner Motor

This motor is similar to the split-phase motor except that there is an external capacitor that is connected in series with the START winding. This capacitor will cause the current in the START winding to lead the voltage.

The current in the RUN winding lags the voltage. When this happens, the phase difference between the two windings is 90° electrically hence a true two-phase starting is achieved.

The starting torque of this motor is very high making it suitable to drive small compressor which needs to start under full load. The capacity of this motor can go up to 1 horsepower.

Once the motor has reached 75% of the rated speed, the capacitor and the START winding will be automatically disconnected from the circuit by using the centrifugal swith, potential or current relay.

After the capacitor and START winding have been removed from the circuit, the magnetic field being generated continuously will cause the motor to continue running. This type of motor is also known as CSIR motor or Capacitor-Start-Induction-Run motor.

Capacitor-Start, Capacitor-Run Air Conditioner Motor

This motor design is similar to the capacitor-start design except that there is a second capacitor known as the RUN capacitor which is connected in parallel with the START capacitor and the switch.

These capacitors are effectively connected in series with the START winding. During the starting of the motor, both the capacitors are connected in the circuit. The START winding and the RUN winding will remain connected to the circuit at all times.

Usually the capacitance of the RUN capacitor is lower than the START capacitor. During starting, the effective capacitance is the combination of both capacitors causing a greater phase angle shift between the windings.

This provides a higher starting torque and can be used to drive the compressor as well as in belt-driven motors.

As the rotor speed reaches 75% of the rated speed, the switch will be automatically open to disconnect the START capacitor from the circuit. The START winding remains in the circuit.

The RUN capacitor helps to correct the power factor of the circuit making it more efficient. The capacity of this type of motor can go up to 10 horsepower and is one of the most efficient motors used in the HVAC industry.

Permanent Split Capacitor(PSC) Air Conditioner Motor

This motor has similar design to the phase-split motor except that there is a RUN capacitor connected to the START and RUN windings. This motor does not have any switch and the START winding, RUN winding and the RUN capacitor are active whenever the motor is ON.

This type of motor has low starting torque and is suitable to be used in small fan motors such as the fan coil unit of a split air conditioning system.

Multi-speed PSC is achieved by changing the winding resistance. If high speed is required, the terminal is connected to the least winding resistance. If low speed is required, the terminal is connected to the highest winding resistance.

By utilizing relays to choose the terminal to be connected to the line voltage, different speed of fan motor can be achieved.

In the diagram above, there are 4 motor speed that can be selected. Super High(SH), High(H), Medium(M) and Low(L). The selection can be done by using electronic relays to connect L2 to one of the four terminals depending on the speed required.

Colorado Companies to Watch 2015

Published: 2015.07.29 03:04 AM

They re not stars yet. But they are on the verge, scooting their way to center stage, attempting to unseat the icons of their respective industries.

Now in its seventh year, Colorado Companies to Watch, presented by UMB Bank, highlights 50 second-stage companies that are discovering and devising valuable products and services, creating quality jobs, elevating communities, and redefining the marketplace.

We have companies across a variety of industries, started in garages and out of personal savings accounts that have transformed into established scale-ups that are creating new employment in Colorado and beyond, says Sam Bailey, Colorado Office of Economic Development industry development manager.

Not to be overlooked is that these companies proudly call Colorado home.

However, brilliant ideas, strong teams and a stunning backdrop to frame the star-studded scene do not mean these organizations are without hardships. Challenges include remaining nimble as organizations scale up, access to capital, the lightning speed and expected integration of technology, and recruiting top talent, regardless of industry.

Looking into the future, as Companies to Watch suggests, means the opportunity to problem-solve and strategically reinvent.

These winners, these risk-takers are moving Colorado s economy forward by creating new jobs, disrupting industry norms and solidifying Colorado as a growth-oriented state, says Dave Tolson, Chair and Platinum Sponsor, Colorado Companies to Watch. This year s winners truly exemplify the spirit of Colorado s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Combined Plan Program Admissions

Students can apply for the Combined Plan program in their junior (3-2 program) or senior (4-2) year of undergraduate study. High school students do not apply until they are enrolled in an undergraduate institution, and should contact their prospective institution(s) for more information.

Students who attend affiliated liberal arts schools must meet the requirements listed below to earn guaranteed admission. Students that do not meet the requirements for guaranteed admission or do not attend an affiliated liberal arts school, may still apply.

To see if the Combined Plan program is for you, learn more about Engineering at Columbia and the Combined Plan Experience .

Requirements for Guaranteed Admission

Candidates who began at an affiliate school in fall 2011 or later :

  1. Full-time enrollment at an affiliated school for at least the past two years
  2. An overall and pre-engineering GPA of 3.30 or higher, as calculated by Columbia. Additionally, the minimum grade for each pre-engineering science or mathcourse must be a B (3.0) or better on the first attempt.
  3. Three favorable recommendations: one each from your institution s Combined Plan liaison, math instructor and science instructor
  4. Successful completion, by the end of the spring semester in which you are applying, of the specific prerequisite courses for your intended major as listed in the Pre-Combined Plan Curriculum Guide
  5. Completion (before entering Columbia) of the major and degree requirements prescribed by your home institution for graduation
  6. Demonstration of English language proficiency as listed below.
  7. Be in good standing at the member institution. Any student who has previously been placed on academic probation or disciplinary action may apply but will not qualify for guaranteed admission.

Candidates who began at an affiliate school starting in fall 2016 :

The above requirements are the same with the updated articulation agreement from summer 2016, which includes new information about the Columbia policies that Combined Plan students are subject to once enrolled at Columbia. Please note a new exception, a three-year residency requirement at the affiliate institution, which can include time spent at a previous institution and/or study abroad opportunities. Additionally, applicants with 3.0 – 3.29 cumulative GPA are welcome to consider the program, although admission is not guaranteed.

In order to be eligible for guaranteed admission, applicants must meet the requirements from the Curriculum Guide that was issued in the fall semester they began college. Students are not subject to the changes made to Curriculum Guides issued in subsequent years. For details, please review the Curriculum Guide that was issued in the year you began college [Fall 2013. Fall 2014. Fall 2015. Fall 2016 ].

You should confer with the liaison at your school in order to determine which classes fulfill Columbia pre-engineering foundation and major-specific courses.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

One of the requirements for guaranteed admission to the Combined Plan program is proof of English language proficiency. A candidate whose native language is not English and whose primary language of instruction has not been English for at least five years must demonstrate English language proficiency. Candidates must submit an official score report from the testing agency for one of the following English proficiency examinations:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A minimum score of 600 (paper-based) or 100 (Internet-based) is necessary for fulfillment of this requirement.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): A minimum score of 7.0 is necessary for fulfillment of this requirement.
  • SAT or ACT: A minimum score of 650 on the Critical Reasoning or Writing sections of the old SAT or a minimum score of 29 on the English or Reading sections of the ACT is necessary for fulfillment of this requirement.

If test scores have expired, the admissions office will accept a copy of the official score report, submitted by the student and certified by an official from the applicant’s institution, from tests taken within the last five years. Self-reported scores will not be accepted.

If an applicant does not have the required standardized testing, the requirement may be fulfilled by obtaining a grade of B or higher in the prerequisite course equivalent to English Composition (ENGL C1010 University Writing), a foundational prerequisite course as noted in the Combined Plan Curriculum Guide. that was issued in the year you began at the home institution [ Fall 2013. Fall 2014. Fall 2015. Fall 2016 ].

Applicants must take all standardized test examinations no later than February 28, 2017 for consideration for the fall of 2017.
