#battery chargers for cars

Schumacher SpeedCharge SC-10030A Review

PROS / This car battery charger is compatible with all types of automotive batteries and recharges batteries quickly. It is easy to operate and has great safety features.

CONS / You have to plug it into a power socket and there are no additional power outlets.

259.00 amps

The SpeedCharge SC-10030A is a microprocessor controlled unit that features push button controls and a digital display, making it easy to select which options you need. This car battery booster includes battery- and alternator-testing functions, which can show how much charge remains in the battery and if the problem lies with your vehicle’s alternator. The digital display clearly shows the voltage you ve selected to jump or charge a battery with among other information.

The SC-10030A can charge nearly every battery type, and you can set the battery charger to regular, deep-cycle, AGM or gel-cell battery charging, as well as set the maximum charge rate at slow or fast. This charger does not include any additional power outlets or a work light, but the SC-10030A is meant more for shop or garage use rather than a portable power source.

This auto battery booster includes a 100-amp jumpstart option for those emergencies when you need a quick start. You can select the engine start feature if you or someone else is ever in need of a quick jump and connect the charger to the vehicle battery. You have to have this charger plugged into a power socket, so you will have to either have the vehicle within extension cord range or in your garage or shop to jump-start it.

The Schumacher SpeedCharge SC-100030A automatic battery charger uses a cooling fan to keep the unit from overheating and overworking itself. The charger’s microprocessor monitors the heat output and controls the fan to disperse the excess heat. It is important to note that the fan does not operate if the charger is set to Tester mode, so you will need to monitor the charger while testing.

Charging Options

The SC-10030A is not only a speedy charger but a smart charger as well. Its fully automatic microprocessing unit and automatic multi-stage charging system help this battery booster charge quickly and efficiently. After it analyzes your battery, the SC-10030A goes through a series of charge phases, including desulphation, absorption, bulk charging and float mode.

This battery charger gives you the option of a slow, 2-amp charge or a fast charge between 12 to 30 amps. The 2-amp, trickle-charge option slowly and steadily recharges smaller batteries, such as a scooter or moped battery, without overcharging and damaging it, while the 12 to 30 amp option is great if you need a quick charge or to keep a larger battery in peak condition. The average charge time of a battery connected to the SpeedCharge is anywhere from one to five and a half hours, depending on how much, if any, power is remaining at the beginning of the charge.

Battery Compatibility

The SpeedCharge SC-10030A can handle and recharge almost every type of 6- or 12-volt battery, including Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) and gel cell batteries. This battery booster is compatible with any vehicle used for travel or recreation; you can hook up this dependable charger to the battery in tractors, motorcycles, snowmobiles, cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs and boats. It also includes a deep-cycle, battery-charge option for any vehicle that uses a deep-cycle battery instead of a normal starter battery.

Safety Features

This car battery booster includes a variety of safety measures to ensure your protection while a battery is connected. The jumper cable clamps are spark resistant and the cables themselves are insulated, reducing the possibility of fire hazard. You can charge your battery either removed from or still in a vehicle.

You won’t have to worry about connecting the cables to the wrong post as the SC-10030A features a reverse polarity protection function. The charger detects if you hook up the cables to the wrong post and won’t work until you have correctly attached the cables. This is extremely helpful if you are working in dim lighting or are unable to find the positive and negative markings on the battery. You also don’t have to worry about overcharging as this car battery charger automatically shuts off when the battery is fully charged; protecting the battery and the unit from overheating.

Due to its compact size, the SC-10030A can be easily stored, whether it s on a shelf in your garage or inside your car under a seat or in a storage compartment. The unit includes a built-in handle for easy carrying and handling, with two cord-wrap cleats located on the rear of the unit for storing the seven-foot long jumper cables and clamps. This feature helps keep the insulated cables neatly tucked away while not in use. The SpeedCharge SC-10030A weighs just over 14 pounds and is easy to lift and position.

If you re looking for an all-around strong performance from a battery charger, the Schumacher SpeedCharge SC-10030A automatic battery charger is a great choice. This battery booster’s quick charging rates, efficient microprocessor control and safety features make it one of the best car battery chargers available.

About Care.com

Care.com is a site to help those who are in need of any sort of assistance imaginable as well as provide opportunities to job seekers. Having the ability to connect job posters with job seekers through their site, it is possible to find someone who can fulfill whatever your need may be. Some of the services include babysitting, running errands, dog walking, housekeeping or tutoring; the possibilities are endless.

It is easy for both job posters and job seekers to sign up for care.com, there are two membership options available. The first one is a Basic membership which is free of charge. The second option is the Premium membership; this membership is available after you sign up for the Basic membership. There is a monthly fee to upgrade to the Premium membership; the prices are available once you sign up.

The Basic membership is limited because you may only post jobs and view caregivers close to your location which makes it difficult to make a decision. Job seekers are also limited to the access they have to preview jobs as well as less options to choose from.

With the Premium membership job posters have access to caregivers profiles as well as the availability to request background checks. This membership is technically the only way to evaluate caregivers capabilities and take the necessary measures to protect yourself, your family and your pets. Job seekers with a Premium membership have a wide range of jobs to choose from, they have a readily available background check, and search results list them higher in ranking.

There are some issues that have been addressed in Care.com reviews online. Job posters are charged automatically each month, and many of them are not aware of this procedure. If they hire someone, they will still be charged until they notify the company to stop. In addition, the Care.com complaints also address background checks. Job posters who requested background checks and were provided with ones that were incorrect and did not pertain to the individual they wanted to hire.

Other members have had issues with employees not showing up for the job, and have been left in a rut. With the number of issues that have occurred, it is probably best to find someone through a trusted friend or relative.

Selling Your Car Locally #car #sellers

Selling Your Car Locally

Advertising your car locally is a safe and convenient way to sell your car or truck—particularly if you don’t want to deal with the additional work required for an out-of-state sale.

While traditional methods are still worth the attempt, there are plenty of other advertisement options to choose from that can help you to sell your vehicle quickly.

Popular avenues you’ll want to explore to sell your car locally include:

  • Sales and auction websites.
  • Social media.
  • Print advertisements.
  • Other traditional methods.

Using Sales Auction Websites

The Internet has made it easy to locally advertise your car instantly to countless potential buyers. A few of the many websites that will allow you to sell your vehicle locally include:

  • eBay Motors.
    • The local selling option on eBay will allow you to:
      • List for free for 7 days.
      • Meet potential buyers face to face.
      • Post your ad for viewing within a radius of 200 miles.
      • Sell up to 6 vehicles per year.
      • Post up to 24 photos with your ad.
  • Craigslist.
    • Another popular option for local sellers, this “for sale by owner” site is also free.
    • Since the organization and layout of the advertisement is left up to you, a good vehicle ad with plenty of pictures and a detailed description can set you apart from other sellers.

Selling Locally with Social Media

While selling your car on social media isn’t the only way you’ll want to advertise your vehicle, it can help—especially if you combine it with other local selling options.

Here are a few social media channels that can help you to spread the word:

  • YouTube.
    • Posting a video of your vehicle on YouTube can be helpful if you use a paid classified ad that limits the number of pictures you can take. By linking to your video, potential buyers can get a good look at your vehicle that pictures won’t show.
  • Facebook.
    • If you’re active on Facebook and have a decent number of followers, post your listing. Ask your friends to like your post and spread the word to any of their friends who might be in the market for a used car.
  • Instagram.
    • Another good way to spread the word through your contacts, this photo sharing site is a good way to catch people’s eye with an artistic photo of your car. Just don’t forget to mention that it’s up for grabs to the highest bidder.
  • Twitter.
    • Tweeting a link to your online car advertisement is a good way to drive traffic to your listing. If any of your friends know of anyone who might be interested, you might be in line for an easy sell .

Local Print Vehicle Ads

Print advertisements aren’t as popular as they used to be, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still a viable option to sell your car locally.

Local Newspaper

Even though online news sites have cut the number of subscribers, there are still plenty of people who read the classifieds of your local newspaper or community newsletter. Since space will be limited, be sure to include only a basic description and contact information. You can save the other details for later.

Though not as common, some car magazines still post classified ads. This may be an avenue worth looking into if you have a classic or vintage vehicle for sale.

Free Publications

Free local magazines on stands inside the grocery store or the lobby of your local service station are still a good way to advertise. Most don’t cost very much to list and cater to the buying audience.

Other Methods for Selling Cars Locally

Simple ways to sell your vehicle are often the most commonly overlooked. Two traditional methods that will get more looks from potential buyers than you might think include:

  • Placing a “For Salesign in your window.
    • This method will serve as an advertisement on your commute to work or running errands around town.
    • On your window flyer, be sure to include at a minimum:
      • A contact number.
      • Mileage.
      • Asking price .
    • If you want a professional-looking window sticker, Kelley Blue Book has a service that will create it for you.
  • Posting to a bulletin board.
    • Though low-tech, bulletin boards still attract attention.
    • Consider placing a flyer:
      • At community centers.
      • Libraries.
      • Grocery stores.
      • Churches.
      • Student centers.
    • Keep the description short and be sure to include, at a minimum, a photo and contact number .

Sell Your Car Online

There are many ways to get rid of a junk car, although not all options my be suitable for your car. Giving a scrap car to charity, for example, means you won’t see any money out of the vehicle. Finding a local junkyard may be difficult and there could be costs associated with towing your vehicle. Finding a Sell Car Online quote is often the best way to get the highest price for a junk car. If you want to sell a car online, make sure you choose the right buyer to get the best price. There are dozens of companies that salvage cars online, but not all are equal. Some companies offer much better prices when you want to sell your car online, so comparison is the key to getting the best price for your junk car. There are many benefits to selling a car online, including the ability to get a sell my car online quote within minutes. An online junkyard makes selling a junk car easier than ever. Complete our Request A Quote now or call toll free at 1-877-227-7487.

Sell My Car Online Quote: Evaluating Your Vehicle

The first step to getting a good price when you sell a car online is to take a good look at the vehicle and evaluate its worth. When you’re ready to junk your car, remember that not all vehicles have the same value. For example, some have parts which are in higher demand while others have higher value because they are in demand in foreign countries. Start by researching the real value before you junk your car to avoid accepting a very low offer. If your car runs and drives and has no major exterior or interior damage a good place to start the search is Edmunds, which lists the going rate for virtually every vehicle. You may need some assistance to determine the value for a scrap car that no longer works or has significant body damage or very high miles. Having the title for the vehicle will also increase the asking price for the vehicle. Although some junkyards online will buy a car without a title, a vehicle with a title is worth more money.

Sell Car by Determining Asking Price

Next, determine your anticipated asking price from an online junkyard or local scrap car buyer. This will help to give you an accurate idea of what you should receive for your junk car. One option to find a good asking price is to compare sell my car online quotes from different companies online. Always remember that not all online junkyards are equal and some will offer a price that is fair while others will low-ball and offer a fraction of what the scrap car is worth. For the most part, a vehicle’s scrap price is determined by its year, make, model, mileage and condition. Ultimately your car is worth what the market will pay for it.

Benefits of an Online Junkyard

Selling salvage cars online offers many advantages over traditional junkyards and junk car buyers. To begin with, online companies that salvage cars online offer instant quotes to tell you how much you’ll receive by junking your car. They also clearly lay out terms, conditions and responsibilities of the seller. Choosing an online junkyard also means you can quickly and easily compare quotes to find the company that offers the best price for your scrap car. Some people may also want a company that recycles the car to protect the environment. Many junk your car online buyers will clearly state whether or not they recycle salvaged vehicles. Some companies may also try to buy the junk car just to fix up and resell as second-hand. An online junkyard is generally the more reliable way to sell a car, and researching the company on the Internet makes it easy to check the company’s policy.

When you’re ready to junk your car, remember the importance of comparing quotes from every online junkyard. Also keep in mind the many advantages online companies offer over local junk car buyers. Online companies that buy junk cars usually offer the best price possible and clearly lay out terms. They also make it possible to get an instant quote for your vehicle without a phone call or leaving the house. This makes planning to sell a car very easy and simple.

5 keys to selling your car online #cars

#sell car online

5 keys to selling your car online

  • Selling your car online requires research.
  • Take a lot of pictures that feature the best aspects of your car.
  • Follow up with the buyer and build a rapport.

Selling your car or truck online? Most of what you know from selling a vehicle through the local newspaper classifieds won’t apply.

According to Clayton Stanfield, manager of dealer training for eBay Motors, classified listings are designed to merely present inventory to shoppers. Consequently, the listings have just enough information to motivate a shopper to call to make an appointment to see the vehicle. An online listing, on the other hand, is transactional.

“This means much more detail will go into the listing since buyers are expected to go much further down the purchase process before ever contacting the dealership,” he says. “With 74 percent of eBay transactions happening across state lines, a buyer may make their entire decision to buy a vehicle just on the pictures and details of the listing.”

Because online sellers have the potential of reaching a larger market than local classifieds and the posting an ad can be cost up to $90, it pays for sellers to develop a different skill set.

Here are five proven tips for selling your vehicle online:

1. Research the marketplace.

Unless your vehicle is ultra rare, it will be listed against scores of similar vehicles on multiple online sites, such as eBay, Craigslist and AutoTrader, and must be priced competitively. That means not only finding out what others are asking for similar vehicles, but the average transaction price of those recently sold.

Showcase your vehicle

2. Remember: 40 photos, minimum.

“We always start with merchandising,” he says. “You need pictures, lots of quality pictures.”

Stanfield says to capture every aspect of the vehicle from every angle. More than likely, the transaction will be completed without the buyer laying eyes on the vehicle, so the photos function as the potential buyer’s walkaround. Stanfield emphasizes that at eBay, 40 is the magic minimum number of pictures to facilitate a quick sale. Fewer photos or poor photos can mean no, or at best low, offers.

“A car doesn’t have to be perfect, but they need to see everything about it,” he says. “I want to see real photos.”

How much does it cost to ship a car?

How much does it cost to a ship a car. We get this question asked very often. The cost to ship a car within the United States is based on the distance traveled, the size of the car and the time of year.

There are many different factors that go into pricing a car shipment. The biggest factor is the type of car it is – small sedan or a large full size truck. The smaller the car, the lower the cost will be since it takes up less room on the car shipping trailer.

Another thing that affects the cost is the route. The more popular the route – the less money you are going to pay since many truckers travel those routes frequently.

Comparing car shipping costs

Lets see how much time and money you would save if you lived in Los Angeles, California and bought a car in Miami, Florida. Total distance from LA to Miami is about 2700 miles. If you choose to drive at 20 miles/gallon it would be about $400.00 in gas for the trip to Miami and $400 for the same car back to Los Angeles. That is not even counting the food and lodging expenses for the hotel you would have to spend for this 7 day trip. The cost to ship a standard size car is $900 from Los Angeles to Miami. You will be saving $300.00 in gas alone and 7 days (168 hours) of your valuable time. After this comparison – you can clearly see that using an auto transport company is much easier and cost effective than driving the car yourself. Below are some tips and details to find out how much it costs to ship a car.

Cost to ship a car:

Coast to coast car shipping for a standard size sedan should range anywhere from $750 – $1,000. The rates should decrase during the slower winter months and increase during the busier season during the summer periods.

7 best American muscle cars of all time

1 of 9

How did muscle-car madness start?

Because it is a genre that enthusiasts are passionate about, you are bound to generate some criticism when compiling a list of the seven greatest muscle cars of all time. However, Bankrate stuck its neck out to do just that.

Some enthusiasts trace the history of muscle cars to the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88. But the heyday of this genre ran from 1965 to 1970 before collapsing under the weight of higher gas prices, more stringent exhaust emissions regulations and soaring insurance costs.

What is a muscle car? There isn’t a settled definition, but most experts agree it’s a smaller, two-door car powered by a high-displacement engine typically found in a larger, full-size sedan.

Some argue that pony cars, such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, aren’t muscle cars at all, but for this list, Bankrate chose not to make that distinction.

Manufacturers engineered muscle cars for straight-line speed, inspiring more than an occasional Saturday night drag race between traffic lights. Neither built nor sold in huge numbers, muscle cars were bait, luring buyers into showrooms where they would purchase more mundane models. Yet, the muscle-car mystique lives on. Here’s our list in model-year order.

Auto Relocation Brokers

Brokers act as the middleman between you and companies that perform the actual auto relocating-the carriers. Brokers own no trucks, no fleets, no terminals.

Before you say that you don’t want to deal with “middlemen,” remember that brokers perform a valuable service because they are able to choose from a wide range of relocation carriers, according to your specific needs. Also, keep in mind that many relocation carriers may prefer to work through brokers. A good broker can work wonders for you by creating a vehicle relocation plan that’s just right for you.

Carriers often charge that auto relocation brokers require a non-refundable deposit to ensure that you will follow through, and that brokers may not be able to guarantee door-to-door delivery. They also note that brokers have less control over pick up and drop off times, since brokers add another layer to the shipping process.

Brokers, though, maintain correctly that carriers often do some of the same things, such as charging deposits and being unable to guarantee precise pickup and dropoff times. The main point is that there are more brokers than carriers, so there is more competition. Brokers know that they have to work harder to please their customers.

Auto Relocation Carriers

Carriers are the companies that do the actual hauling of the vehicles. Some of the larger auto relocation carriers have extensive fleets for hauling everything from motorcycles to family wagons to exotic cars. They may also have terminals that act as “jumping off” points for autos that are about to be shipped or those which they have recently received.

Dealing directly with auto relocation carriers isn’t necessarily better than dealing with brokers. First, you would want to make sure that the carrier has a large enough customer service department that they can serve your needs. Remember, auto relocation brokers are mainly about customer service; carriers are mainly about shipping. You also want to make sure that the carrier can offer adequate insurance coverage, and that, if needed, they can arrange for door-to-door service. Many carriers require that the relocation service begin and end in terminals, which often are located in distant industrial areas.

7 Types of Car Insurance: Which Ones Do You Really Need?

The cost of even a small repair makes car insurance nice to have. When we start adding in the medical expenses that can go with a car accident, insurance becomes downright necessary. In many states, insurance is even a legal requirement before you can drive your car out on the road. But a wide variety of options are available when it comes to insurance there are actually seven different types of car insurance you can choose from in most cases and it can be difficult to decide just what type of auto insurance is the best choice for you, your vehicle and your budget. Here is a list of the seven types and what you need to know about each one.

1. Liability Insurance

When your state requires that you carry some sort of insurance for your car, they re usually looking for liability insurance. In the event that you are in a car accident and the police decide it is your fault, liability insurance covers the cost of repairing any property damaged in the crash (such as cars or buildings), as well as the medical bills from resulting injuries. Most states have a minimum requirement for liability insurance coverage that you absolutely must have.

However, it usually makes sense to go beyond that minimum requirement if you can afford the payment. That s because you are personally responsible for any claims that exceed your coverage s upper limit. In the event that you are in an accident, you don t want to run the risk of having to pay a significant amount of money out of your own pocket. How much liability insurance you need depends on whether you have a lot of assets to protect, as it is more important to have higher levels of coverage just in case of a catastrophe.

2. Collision Insurance

The biggest problem with carrying only liability insurance is that if there is an accident, you may wind up without the money to repair your own vehicle. A collision insurance policy makes it so that someone else — your insurer — will pay for the repairs to your car. If your car is totaled in an accident, a collision insurance policy will pay out the value of your car. While the payout won t cover for a brand new vehicle, the sum will equal approximately what the car was worth before the accident.

Collision insurance isn t a must-have, as far as insurance goes. If your car is older, it may not be worth paying for insurance, especially if you can work on saving up enough to replace the car if necessary. If you have a good-sized emergency fund. you may be safe without collision insurance. If you ve chosen a more expensive car or your car is relatively new, however, collision insurance can help you sleep much better at night.

3. Comprehensive Insurance

Liability and collision insurance policies exclusively cover car accidents. If something else happens to your car weather damage, theft, an animal collision you won t be able to get your insurance company to address the problem. With a comprehensive insurance policy, however, your insurer will handle just about any situation that comes up.

A comprehensive insurance policy is one of those things that are nice to have. However, coverage can be pricey and may not be worthwhile if your car would be relatively easy for you to replace, if you had to. Note though that you can bring down the price of this policy if your vehicle has an anti-theft and tracking devices installed.

4. Uninsured Motorist Protection

Just because the law requires everyone to have insurance doesn t actually mean that s the way things work out. Even if a driver has a liability insurance policy, most states have relatively low minimums that may not cover all of the expenses that can go along with an accident. One of the worst things that can happen is that you get stuck with the bills in an accident that wasn t even your fault.

The decision to get a policy that covers damage by an uninsured motorist isn t as clear cut as other policies. In theory, even if a driver doesn t have enough insurance to cover damages during an accident, he will still have an obligation to cover the costs out of pocket. It s only when the person at fault doesn t have any money that there can be problems.

5. Medical / Personal-Injury Protection

The costs associated with treating injuries after a car accident can be astronomical. In order to cover those costs, medical and personal-injury protection is available. No matter who is at fault, such protection will cover your medical bills along with those of your passengers.

If you have a good health insurance plan. however, it s far less likely that medical and personal-injury protection will be useful to you. And considering how much more a general health insurance policy covers, it should be your first choice.

6. No-Fault Insurance

So far, no-fault insurance is available in twelve states. This option covers injuries and property damage, no matter who is ultimately responsible for a given accident. The decision to choose no-fault insurance really depends on what other insurance options are available to you and at what price. Some no-fault policies can be expensive, making it more cost-effective to choose other options, especially if your car is inexpensive to replace.

7. Gap Insurance

If you are still making car payments, gap insurance may be a good choice. It s meant for drivers who still owe money on their cars and need to pay off the vehicle if it is totaled in an accident. It s generally a good choice if you owe more on your car than you could easily pay off on short notice.

Gap insurance is especially worthwhile if you owe more on the car than you could get for it if you sold it today, since many insurance policies will only cover the value of the car, rather than the cost to replace it. Some lenders may require you to have gap insurance or something similar until you pay off the vehicle, so you may already have it whether you know it or not.

Cheaper car insurance for young drivers

You’re a young driver, you’ve passed your test, you can’t wait to get out on the road. But you need to get young drivers car insurance first – and how much is it going to cost? As a young driver you must be wondering where the best place is to get cheaper car insurance for first time drivers.

It is an unfortunate fact that younger drivers have considerably more accidents – especially serious ones – than more experienced drivers. In fact 20% of serious accidents on the road involve young drivers (source ). This means that car insurance quotes for young drivers tend to be much higher – because the probability of having to pay out lots of money following an accident is higher.

So where can you find cheaper car insurance policies? Where can you get a great price for young drivers insurance? Well insurethebox is a good place to start.

With insurethebox, you are given the chance to prove that you are a safe driver. We’re a better value option for many young drivers, with customers aged 25 and under saving an average £517* when they choose insurethebox.

17 year-old Kyle from Glasgow was shocked that car insurance could be so expensive for young drivers. The highest quote he received by searching online was £4,400 – almost £3000 more expensive than the policy he decided to buy from insurethebox.

“When I first started driving I was a bit nervous about the black box, but I quickly got used to it. It’s not fair that so many young people set a bad reputation for other young drivers by driving badly. But black box car insurance from companies like insurethebox helps bring the cost right down, making it cheaper for us to be on the road, while keeping an eye on our driving”.

With telematics technology, you are rewarded for good driving. You can earn up to 100 Bonus Miles a month, and could get a great value car insurance price at renewal.

8 Biggest Used Car Lies and How To Expose Them

NEW YORK (MainStreet ) — Used car buying is a high-stakes game of trust and confidence that can leave buyers on their backsides and sellers empty-handed if there’s a shred of concern.

The average American car has been on the road for 11 years, according to auto industry research group Polk. The recent economic downturn made drivers reluctant to part with their old beaters and forced buyers in need of a car to flock to used car lots. That reduced supplies dramatically and increased used car prices by a third since 2008. That makes even a well-loved vehicle a costly bet for wary consumers.

That risk is just amplified online, when consumers don’t have access to the vehicles being sold and are relying heavily on the seller’s word. So how does a used car buyer shop online without coming across as a sucker willing to throw money at the first too-good-to-be-true deal he or she clicks on?

In an effort to soothe buyers’ nerves, the editors at auto research and shopping site CarGurus combed through user comments, discussion questions and dealer reviews to help us identify issues that most concern, annoy or rattle consumers buying used car online. The following are the eight biggest fears consumers have about online car buying and some advice to help them along:

1. Am I getting a good deal? If a consumer sees a good price online but has no idea what’s going on under the hood, how do they know they’re making a sound purchase?

What to do? Use pricing resources such as CarGurus. Kelly Blue Book. TrueCar or Edmunds to do your price homework. CarGurus, for example, uses algorithms to analyze, value and rank local car listings according to whether they are great, good, fair, poor or overpriced. Along with similar tools on other sites, it’s a good way to see how local car listings and deals stack up.

2. Is it a lemon? A consumer finds a great deal on a used car, but has a nagging suspicion that there’s something wrong with it.

What to do? For starters, request a vehicle history report from CarFax or Experian’s AutoCheck. Most dealers will have this on hand, but it doesn’t hurt to order it yourself. If there are still concerns, show the car to a licensed mechanic. It’ll cost you, but the peace of mind is worth it.

3. “This deal won’t last!” A consumer finds a great deal, but the listing puts them on the clock.

What to do? According to a CarGurus study, most used cars take on average 30 days to sell, so don’t panic. At CarGurus, TrueCar and elsewhere, you can check the price history and days on market of available car listings, which can help consumers gauge just how much time and leverage they have.

4. No response: A potential buyer contacts a dealer about a car listing online and hours, days and weeks go by without a peep.

What to do? Most dealerships today have dedicated Internet sales departments that are very responsive to online queries about their stock. If a dealer doesn’t get back to you within a day about a car, though, call the dealership directly.

5. They won’t stop calling: A handful of car inquiries results in multiple phone calls and emails a day from various dealerships that a consumer can’t keep track of.

What to do? Back them off. Call back and have them take you off their call lists or give them a specific date to let you know if the car of interest is still available. They’re coming on a little strong and they need to cool it.

6. Bait, meet switch: What looks like a great deal online turns out to be not quite as advertised, if it exists at all.

What to do? Take it walking. If a consumer confirms all the specs and asks a dealer to guarantee that the exact car in the ad will be there when you arrive for your test drive and it’s still not on the lot when you get there, just move along. A dealer you even suspect of playing down to the bad used car dealer stereotype and pulling a scam that predates the Edsel isn’t someone you want to waste words on, never mind cash.

7. Should I keep looking? A shopper finds a great car, but thinks a better deal might be a search away.

What to do? One of the benefits of shopping online for a used car is that you can cover a lot of vehicles and mileage in a little time. Sometimes it pays to increase the search radius a bit. A CarGurus study showed that prices can vary considerably (up to 10%) from region to region, and even between rural and urban dealerships. The latter tend to offer the sweetest deals.

8. Can I trust the dealer? There’s that trust issue again. Is the dealer really nice and helpful, or is the insecure buyer just a naive rube?

What to do? American comedy has built hours of material on the backs of bad used car dealers, but CarGurus found that 70% of reviewed dealerships got high marks from consumers. That means roughly three-quarters of the dealers out there are as helpful as they seem, but that other 30% is the reason auto pricing sites exist.

Banish backseat boredom without spending a dime By Suzanne Rowan Kelleher

Road Trips

Keep kids entertained with toys, games, and apps. (Flickr: jencu)

What do parents dread most about family road trips . It’s not the cost of filling up the gas tank. It’s also not traffic or toll roads or Sunday drivers. It’s the thought of their own little cherubs stuck together in tight quarters for hours. Oh, the backseat squabbling. The poking. The whining. The impatient cries of “Are we there yet?” Just. make. it. stop.

Luckily, there are lots of ways to keep kids happily entertained and enjoying each other’s company . And the best part? You can achieve it without spending a dime. Here are our picks for the 10 best free car games for kids:

1. I Spy. “I spy with my little eye, something red.” This easy-to-learn game is perfect for preschoolers, and can keep them entertained for unbelievably long periods of time. The directions are simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.

2. Road Trip Bingo . This fun game combines bingo with a scavenger hunt. Give each child a flat surface, such as a clipboard or hardcover book, to put on his or her lap. Each player gets a free printable bingo card and a zip-lock bag with 16 pennies. When a player spies an item on his card, he covers the picture with a penny. Just like in regular bingo, the first player to cover all the squares in a straight line wins.

7 Hidden Costs of Buying a New Car

June 25, 2014

Buying a new car is fun and exciting but it s important to consider the hidden costs of buying a new car. Sticker price is only a portion of the actual cost of ownership. Many of the fees are unnecessary, such as Dealer Prep and Dealer Holdback Allowance, which are added on by the dealer in order for them to make a larger profit on the sale. While other fees, for instance, Destination Charges, are legitimate and part of new car buying costs.

Dealer Prep fees are nothing more than pure profit for the dealer and can be several hundred dollars. Dealer Prep charges are covered by the car manufacturer and included on the windows sticker as part of the MSRP. Dealer installed options, which can include paint and fabric sealant and window tinting, are another cost to consider when buying a new car. Dealer Holdback Allowance is an invisible 2% to 3% fee sometimes added to the car price to allow the dealer to sell a new car below invoice price and still make a profit. Additional Dealer Markup sometimes appears on the sticker next to the MSRP and is an artificial fee added by the dealer as a buffer for negotiation so the dealer can make a larger profit.

Some foreign car manufacturers charge for options installed at the port such as rubberized undercoating. These fees, called Port Prep or Port Installed Options Fees, can run as high as $600 depending on the car manufacturer. Destination Charges are what the manufacturer charges to transport the car from the factory or port and is generally several hundred dollars. Advertising fees are dealer added to the price of a new car and can be as high as $1,000, however, buying online generally eliminates Advertising fees.

Finance fees vary and can add a substantial amount to the monthly payment of a new car. Many car manufacturers offer 0% financing incentives while most banks will charge an interest rate. Sales tax ranges from 2% to 7.25% depending on the state and can add a substantial amount to the car price. Documentation Fees are what the dealer charges to prepare and file the title, license and registration paperwork. It may be less expensive to file all the necessary paperwork yourself.

Other costs to consider are car insurance which tends to go up for a new car and maintenance which will vary by make and model. Fuel cost may also increase for cars that require premium fuel or one that gets lower gas mileage. An extended warranty, while an additional expense, is almost always a well worthwhile investment in the long run.

7 Hidden Costs of Buying a New Car

  • Dealer and Manufacturer Fees
  • Car Insurance
  • Maintenance
  • Sales Tax
  • License and Registration Fees

Hidden costs can be hard to decipher but new car buying doesn t have to be difficult or intimidating. With a little online research it is quick and easy to find the actual cost of a new car without the hidden costs. There are great online websites such as CarsDirect that make it simple to find and buy a new car at the best possible price with no hassle.

When to Consider Using Monthly Car Insurance

  • **For a rarely used car.** If you have a classic car that spends most of its time locked up in a shed, then it’s probably not insured, and you may only want coverage for a month or two during the summer, for example.
  • **Teenage drivers**. If you have access to a car that is not yours, such as a friend or work colleague’s, you probably still need your own insurance in most cases. If the car belongs to your parents, try to get [added to their policy](http://www.dmv.org/insurance/how-to-add-teens-to-your-auto-insurance-policy.php) instead.
  • **Emergency situation** or other short-term need. If you’re moving out of your home or your boss needs you to drive a work vehicle for a short period of time, you will need to have insurance that covers that vehicle.

No-Down Payment Car Insurance

Although these policies generally have terms of three, six or 12 months, you only need to make monthly payments and you’re not required to make a large lump sum payment at the beginning of the coverage period. This generally works out to be more expensive in the long run compared to paying in advance, though, because of added billing fees. You may be able to cancel this type of policy after paying for the first month, but you should check the details with your provider.

Canceling A Regular Long-Term Policy

In most states, you can simply take out a regular longer-term insurance policy for your car and then cancel it after one month. although laws exist in some states that make it impossible to cancel the policy in fewer than two months — regardless of your reason.

Even if you are able to cancel the policy after a month, there may be extra fees associated with this early termination, so read the fine print carefully. In any case, many states require you to prove that you have another insurance policy in place before allowing you to cancel your existing one.

Prices of temporary car insurance plans vary greatly, depending on many factors such as your age, where you live, driving history, type of car and how long you want insurance coverage for. Seek quotes from at least three or four providers before settling on one. If you are already insured with a long-term policy, ask your provider if it offers any options that are shorter.

To trade or not to trade

You re ready to buy a new car. Should you trade in your old car or sell it yourself? The answer is the old adage: You never know until you try. If you want to get top dollar for your old car, it s best to go to the dealer, see what happens, and then make your decision. Here are some guidelines that will prepare you for what will happen and help you decide what s best for you.

Know what your car is worth

KBB shows three values: Trade-in, private party. and retail. Check the trade-in (lowest) and private-party values for a good estimate. (KBB will walk you through determining your car s condition – be honest!) Next, peruse the local online classifieds to see how close asking prices for cars like yours are to actual book values.

Why Women Pay Lower Insurance Premiums and How to Get Lower Rates for Male Drivers

It is a well-known fact that men pay higher car insurance rates than women. However, what is not so well known is the reasons why men pay higher car insurance rates. Many people tend to believe it is simply because men usually drive much faster than women that there is such disparity in the rates. While this is true to a certain degree, there are other reasons as well.

Get Free Car Insurance Quotes

Why Men Pay More than Women

Many statistics show that men and women have about an equal number of car accidents every year; however, the types of accidents vary considerably. While women tend to be involved in many minor traffic accidents, men seem to be doing a much better job of causing a great deal of damage to vehicles. This is because men are usually much more aggressive drivers and drive at much higher rates of speed. So, because insurance companies pay out much smaller claims for the minor dings that are often associated with many women s fender benders, men suffer higher insurance premiums because of crash damage that tends to cost a lot more to repair

Typically, women are quoted up to up to 20 percent less than men for their women car insurance quotes. Women receive a female insurance discount. Is there anything men can do to get these lower quotes?

Working the Odds

A car insurance company is a business. And, like all businesses, they will invest more in something if it comes with fewer risks, and invest less in something that comes with higher risks. Because car insurance companies are investing in drivers, the more likely it is that a driver will get into an accident and thus, cost the insurance company money, the less likely it is that the insurance company will give that driver a low rate on their insurance. These risks are calculated by working the odds. Men, on average, get into more accidents than women. Men between the ages of 16 and 25 get into more accidents than any other demographic. Therefore, their rates are the higher.

Get Free Car Insurance Quotes

Picking Your Ride

On average, men buy higher end sports cars than women. These cars are more expensive to insure. Also, there is a stereotype that someone who purchases a fast car will engage in risky behavior, like speeding, racing and showboating. Women tend to buy more practical cars with more safety features. Also, some insurance companies will automatically charge more to insure a red car, because red is perceived to be flashy and thus, may indicate a riskier driver.

Saying I Do Leads to Lower Rate

This lower cost is because married men have been shown to drive more defensively and get into fewer accidents than single men. Married men also buy fewer sports cars than single men; once they are married, they are more likely to buy family cars with more safety features.

Be a Good Driver

Men can always improve their insurance rates by having a clean driving record. By driving at or under the speed limit and always parking legally, men will decrease or eliminate their traffic violations. Fewer traffic violations leads to lower insurance rates. Also, driving defensively and taking as few risks as possible will lead to fewer car accidents. Fewer car accidents also leads to lower insurance rates.

The best way for men to start receiving better rates on their auto insurance is to become better drivers and buy more sensible cars. This will not only improve their insurance rates, but will make the roads safer for everyone.

– Are you tired of getting low-ball offers from people who think they can just take your car for a few bucks?

What Are Certified Used Vehicles?

12/17/2003 (updated 04/29/2009) – By Brian Moody, Road Test Editor, Edmunds.com

According to a recent J.D. Power and Associates study, sales of certified used cars have increased 46 percent since 2000. For many people, certified used cars have become affordable alternatives to new cars. By “certified used” or “certified pre-owned,” we mean used cars that are offered for sale by your local dealer and feature warranties that extend beyond the initial “when new” coverage.

To qualify for our definition of a “certified used” vehicle, the warranty must be backed by the original vehicle manufacturer. The original manufacturer of the vehicle is using its dealer network to inspect the car, determine if it is worth certifying and then offer support for the vehicle for a period of time beyond the original warranty. Not all used cars can qualify for certified pre-owned programs, and terms vary from one brand to the next, but any true certified pre-owned program will include at least a 100-point inspection of the car. If problems are found, the factory-trained technicians will fix it or disqualify the car from the program. The certified warranty protection typically takes effect when the original warranty expires and, like a new car warranty, offers coverage for a certain number of years or miles, whichever comes first.

Used cars sold with third-party warranties are sometimes advertised as “certified” but are not truly factory-certified because the authority and expertise of the vehicle’s manufacturer is not standing behind the “warranty” in any way. In fact, the term “warranty” may be misleading, as third-party warranties are really just extended service contracts that the buyer must purchase at an additional cost. Extended service contracts can usually be purchased for any vehicle, and the vehicle’s manufacturer is not involved in any coverage promised by the aftermarket service contract. A true warranty offers coverage that is included in the original purchase price.

The major downside to third-party service contracts is that they often obligate the customer to pay for needed repairs up front, and then wait for a reimbursement check; some require the payment of a deductible that can vary from $50 to $400. In addition, there is always the risk that the insurance company or other underwriter of the service contract will not be around to honor the warranty when a claim is made this risk is much less when the responsible party is a vehicle manufacturer. Also, most extended service contracts do not require the rigorous inspection and repair procedures that a real certified program offers.

In many cases, a customer who purchases a certified used car will become eligible for benefits that a new car customer enjoys. Perks such as service loan cars, shuttle pick-up and drop-off service, roadside assistance, free maintenance and low-rate “incentive” loans are just a few of the reasons to choose a certified used car over a less expensive used car bought from a private party or used car lot. There’s also the added benefit of having your car or truck serviced at your local dealer, which in most cases means a cleaner waiting room with little touches like fresh coffee and more comfortable chairs it’s not reason alone to choose a certain car, but it sure doesn’t hurt. Even if a specific perk is not part of the official certified program, you can sometimes negotiate additional features with your local dealer dealers selling certified used cars will, by and large, want to treat you the same way they treat their new car customers. Of course they’re hoping to earn your new car business at some point, so they have more interest in building a relationship with you.

Some certified used programs offer the option of purchasing even more coverage, but the real value lies in the factory-provided coverage that is included in the purchase price of the car you’re considering. Because some cars have a longer initial warranty when the car is purchased new, they represent a better candidate as a certified used car in other cases, buying a certified used car will net the customer a longer warranty than if he or she bought that same car new. The attraction to certified used vehicles is clear new car benefits at a used car price.

Many programs offer perks not directly related to the vehicle itself. For example, some certified programs offer services similar to what an auto club might offer. Services such as trip routing and trip interruption protection are often included as part of the certified program. Trip interruption protection is a feature that will reimburse the owner of a certified used car for incidental costs such as car rental, lodging, meals and out-of-town repair expenses should he or she become stranded due to a warranted mechanical breakdown when traveling out of town usually an owner must be at least 100 miles from home in order to use the service. Some luxury brands will offer such services as trip planning or include a year’s worth of subscription fees to in-car telematics services like Lexus Link or OnStar.

So the benefits of purchasing a certified pre-owned car versus a used car from a private party or used car lot are obvious. You have the factory standing behind the certified pre-owned car, plus you’ll be buying a car that the original manufacturer has inspected to ensure that it is worthy of certification. The only downside to certified pre-owned cars is that they are generally more expensive than other used cars. But in this case, the benefits may outweigh the cost for many buyers, the peace of mind alone is enough to justify the extra money.

What are Crossover Cars? (with pictures) – mobile wiseGEEK #used #pickup #trucks

#crossover cars

wiseGEEK: What are Crossover Cars?

Crossover cars are vehicles that have the bodies of an SUV or minivan but are set on a car chassis. The benefit of this structure is that they offer an increase in interior space, especially for passengers. Crossover vehicles also have a smoother ride and better handling than other cars with the bodies of SUVs or trucks that are set on a heavier chassis.

One of the main advantages of this type of vehicle may be an increase in operational efficiency, translated as better gas mileage. This is because the chassis is not as heavy and therefore the car, also known as a CUV or XUV, does not have to carry unneeded additional weight. This operational efficiency is highly sought after, especially by those looking to get the best gas mileage they can with higher fuel prices.

While crossover cars are becoming increasingly popular because of the comfort and efficiency, they do have some drawbacks. Trucks and SUVs are often meant to go on road and off road. That is one reason why they have a heavier chassis, which is more durable. Crossover vehicles are not meant to go off road, at least not in a way that could be very rough on the vehicle. For those who have such cars, the rule of thumb is to not take it anywhere they would not take a normal-sized vehicle.

This style of car started coming of age in the US in 2007, when more than dozen models hit the market in the wake of record-high gas prices. The light truck market, which includes both pickups and SUVs, had been on a substantial decline for several years. The crossover vehicle was seen as the answer to Detroit’s woes.

The combination of comfort and efficiency seems to be resonating well with drivers, at least in the United States. While SUVs were declining, sales of crossovers grew 16% in 2007. The trend could continue for years to come as more manufacturers start releasing models with more features and choices.

In fact, that diversification of the crossover vehicle has already started. Hybrid crossovers are already on the market, which makes the vehicles even more fuel efficient. Crossover hydrogen vehicles may make an appearance at local car dealerships as well. While the automobile market remains relatively volatile, its transition to a new type of vehicle may get a big boost with the acceptance of crossover cars.

Vehicles Under 1000

If you’re looking for cheap, reliable transportation, you may be surprised to learn that you’ll find many used cars under $1000. They say you get what you pay for, but in the case of used cars, that old adage doesn’t always apply.

Sources for Cheap Used Vehicles

There are several sources for affordable used vehicles. Each source has its advantages and disadvantages, and you’re most likely to get a great deal if you try several different avenues at once. Here are a few of the best places to shop for vehicles costing less than $1000.

eBay Motors

Although they aren’t limited to cars costing less than $1000, eBay Motors is a great way to find a car within your price range. Since you can choose whether or not to bid on the car, you get to decide your budget. Cars often sell for under $1000, especially if they are classics requiring restoration or older cars in need of a little mechanical work

Cars for a Grand

For more than five years, Cars for a Grand has been collecting and organizing automotive classified ads for cars that cost $1000 or less. You can find cheap cars near you by searching with your zip code. The links on this site will take you to the site actually selling the car, often eBay Motors or another auction-style site.

1000 Dollar Autos

1000 Dollar Autos does the searching for you, filter the results from several websites to offer you a good selection of cars for less than $1000. You can choose results in your state or select a specific make or model. Since this site does not actually sell you the car, you’ll need to work with the seller directly.

Cars Under 1000

Although the user interface on Cars Under 1000 isn’t particularly attractive, the site functions well and provides you with a list of cars for less than $1000. The cars are listed directly by the owners, along with mechanical information about the vehicle and contact information for the seller.

The ultimate online classified marketplace, Craigslist is another great source for used vehicles. Local sellers list their vehicles on Craigslist, and potential buyers can easily sort through and peruse the options. You can often negotiate on the price of used vehicles listed on Craigslist, and if you keep an eye out for good deals, you’re sure to find something for under $1000.

Newspaper Classified Ads

Even in the age of the Internet, newspaper classifieds may be one of the best sources for cheap used autos. Because these vehicles cost less than $1000, sellers may not want to invest a lot of time and money in marketing them for sale. It usually costs only a few dollars to list a vehicle in the local classifieds, so this is a great place to find good deals on cheap vehicles.

Friends and Family

Don’t overlook one of your best sources for affordable transportation. When friends or family members are upgrading to a new vehicle, they may be willing to sell you their older one. Since you save them the hassle of listing the vehicle, they may give you a good deal. When you buy from friends and family, you also get the peace of mind that comes with knowing the history of a used vehicle.

What Can You Buy with Less Than $1000?

When it comes to buying a car, $1000 may not seem like much of a budget. However, according to AutoTrader. you can get these and many other vehicles for $1000 or less:

  • 2001 Dodge Caravan SE with very high miles
  • 1994 Ford Ranger 2WD with moderately high miles
  • 2000 Chevy Cavalier Coup with moderately high miles
  • 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis with very low miles
  • 1998 Ford Taurus with moderately high miles
  • 1999 Plymouth Voyager with moderately high miles
  • 1994 Toyota Tercel with moderately high miles

Later Model Years

When your budget is under $1000, you can expect to choose from cars that are usually at least ten years old. Depending on the quality of the vehicle, the number of miles on the odometer, and how the car has been maintained, age may not detract from its ability to provide reliable transportation.

Higher Miles

Most cars for sale in this price range have 100,000 or more miles on them. Many have very high miles, sometimes over 200,000 or even 300,000. However, if you take the time and shop carefully, you may find a much older vehicle with very few miles. These can often represent a good investment.

More Domestic Cars Than Imports

Because imported cars, especially those from Japan, tend to hold their value better than their domestic counterparts, most cars in this price range are American-made. If you have your heart set on a Honda or Toyota, you may be able to finder a later model vehicle with high miles.

Tips for Buying Vehicles Under $1000

When you’ve found a used vehicle you like, it’s time to do a little research. Keep the following tips in mind:

  • Consider having a mechanic go over this vehicle from top to bottom. While you’ll pay for this service, which often costs about $100, it could save you from buying a used vehicle that needs a lot of work.
  • You may want to get a CARFAX report for your used vehicle. Even for vehicles under $1000, a CARFAX report is likely worth the money. It can clear up any mysteries about your new car or truck and put your mind at rest.
  • Check for recalls. Automakers issue recalls on a regular basis, and it’s a good idea to make sure your used vehicle has had any safety issues addressed. You can check for recalls on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation website .
  • Find a way to give your cheap used vehicle a little personality. Consider getting some fun car accessories. such as seat covers, dashboard trim, and vehicle organizers. You don’t have to spend a fortune to have a stylish ride!

Take Your Time

If you don’t need your $1000 car right away, it pays to take your time when shopping. You can compare prices and vehicles, and jump on a good deal when it comes along. Soon, you’ll be driving a new-to-you car without the hassle and expense of a car payment.

What Makes A Smart Battery Charger?

In short: microprocessor controlled. When smart chargers first came out they typically had a three stage charge profile. With the last stage or float mode, arguably being the most important since it allowed a user to leave the battery connected to the charger indefinitely. Today’s smart chargers often have 5-9 phases and use patented algorithms (special secret charger profiles controlled by a microchip) to help extend your batteries life. The multi-purpose Genius charger. for example, can be used on 6V and 12 volt batteries and is smart enough to recognize the type of lead acid battery connected to it. You no longer need to fear overcharging (or undercharging) an AGM, gel, calcium or standard wet battery.

Model Year

With the current economy, consumers are looking at used cars as a means to get value for their money. When you purchase a pre-owned automobile, the value does not immediately depreciate like it would with the purchase of a new car. The consumer also has a more flexible price range when shopping for a used car. Where a new car is based off the MSRP; the price of a used vehicle can vary greatly depending on mileage, year, and condition. If a new luxury car is out of your price range, then buying a used car that is one or two years old with low mileage could be a way to compromise.

The days of driving around to numerous dealers looking for the perfect pre-owned car has long since passed. The ability to browse thousands of used cars online has revolutionized the industry. What used to take hours to accomplish can now be done in a fraction of the time from the comfort of your own home. Browsing car listings online affords you the time to research all the vehicles in your price range without having to worry about any unwanted outside influences. You can do all the legwork and vehicle investigation using the internet. Search the huge database of used cars at Autobytel.com and filter our inventory by year, make, model, or category. Our Car Comparison Tool allows you to analyze numerous vehicles at the same time. See information and specifications like: fuel economy, price, trim level, options, safety features, dimensions, and performance.

Once you decide that buying a used car is the right decision and have narrowed down the number of choices to just a handful; you can browse numerous pre-owned vehicles online at Autobytel.com. Having the ability to see numerous used cars for sale from thousands of dealerships in one place is a real benefit. When you have a broad search radius; you are more likely to find the exact car for sale, with all the features and options that are important to you. Save money by comparing thousands of used cars in your area will give you an idea on the price but also the leverage to purchase the automobile of choice.

Why then should you buy a used car? One good reason is that when you purchase a lightly pre-owned vehicle; you can afford a more premium car then you normally would. Let’s say that you really want to own a luxury or sports car, but cannot justify the large monthly payment on a brand new model. By purchasing a used version that is a few years old with a couple thousand miles on the odometer will put these previously out of range models well within reach. Not to mention that these second-hand vehicles can be loaded with high end packages, extra options, and features that you otherwise could not afford.

Autobytel.com has many great tools available to those embarking on a used car search. Besides being able to compare automobiles, the website has information available online for any car sold in the U.S. dating back to 1999. There are some free shopping tools available to aid in your quest to buy a used car. See Auto Insurance Quotes on used cars for sale. Insurance rates for pre-owned automobiles are a lot cheaper than those for new cars; since the value of a used car is generally thousands less depending on a couple of factors like: age, mileage, and condition. Autobytel.com also has a free car payment calculator so you can better estimate your monthly payments if choosing to finance.

One disadvantage when buying a used car would be the absence of financing deals and rebates. There are often incentives available to those who purchase new cars such as zero percent ARP financing for a number of months. These incentives are available from the factory on new vehicles but are not extended to those looking to buy used cars. There is an exception to this though; some manufacturers have Certified Pre-Owned programs. And there are often CPO offers available to those purchasing a second-hand vehicle from a certified dealer.

Perform a used car search at the Autobytel.com database which houses hundreds of used car dealers with thousands of used cars for sale. Once a car has been picked, the customer has access through Autobytel.com to a Vehicle Identification Report. These reports will give you the history on the car to ensure that there is nothing below the surface that could affect the value of the car. For instance; the Vehicle History Report will give a full history on the used car in question. You can see information like an odometer check to ensure the true mileage of the automobile. Check to see if the vehicle has been in any accidents or view past title transfers. It pays to do your diligent research with such a potentially large investment.

In conclusion it is a great idea to shop for used cars online. And the giant inventory of pre-owned automobiles at Autobytel.com is a perfect place to start. There are many advantages to buying a used car. There will be years of vehicle history available from other consumers. You can gauge the resale value of a car depending on how much interest there is for it. See what vehicles have been recalled or which used cars have great reliability. And the best part about browsing for used cars online is the lack of a pushy salesperson. You have all the tools available at Autobytel.com.

What models of used electric cars are available to buy?

Since the introduction of the government’s Plug-in Car Grant in 2011, nearly 40,000 electric vehicles have been registered in the UK (to June 2015). As most EVs have only been bought within the last couple of years, there is a limited, but growing number of used electric cars available. During 2015, several hundred EVs are expected to reach the used car market as the first wave of cars come to the end of their three year lease contracts.

Some electric car models, such as the market-leading Nissan Leaf. already have a second-generation version in the market, so there will be a number of first-generation and ex-demo models available. Take a look at the range ofelectric cars available. a list of new electric cars currently on the market, for which there will increasingly be used versions available.

What to look out for when buying a used electric car?

As for any electric car purchase, it is important to evaluate if an electric car is right for your individual circumstances. The key issues to consider are whether you have access to a charging point where you can charge on a regular (daily) basis and whether your driving pattern is compatible with the range on the car – see our main electric car buying guide for more info.

Important issues to consider specifically when buying a used electric car are:

Range and charging – check the driving range of the specific used electric car as this can vary on a model by model basis. Also you need to check what cables come with the vehicle, what type of charging points can be used with the existing cable and if limited, what additional cables compatible cables can be purchased. Warranty – electric cars typically have a separate and different warranty for the battery and the vehicle itself. It is important to check what the remaining warranty is, in particular for the battery, as the battery can be expensive to replace. Support – there are some excellent support packages available from some manufacturers, such as free pick-up if run out of charge. Check what dealer or manufacturer benefits come with the purchase of the second-hand electric car.

At present, most used electric cars for sale are available through dealership networks, so in many cases a second-hand electric car will have had a high-level of servicing and maintenance. Ex-lease vehicles with a full service history make particular sense when buying and electric car.

Where can I charge my used electric car?

Extensive studies show that most EV owners charge their electric car at home or the workplace; where a car will spend most of its time parked. While most EVs can be slow charged from a standard 3-pin socket, for maximum safety, Next Green Car recommends that EVs should be charged from a dedicated charing point.

Fortunately, 3kW wall-mounted units are readily available and are relatively cheap to buy and install. Some suppliers, such as POD Point and Zero Carbon World. even offer basic home and workplace units for free (govt funded) depending an availability.

However, when making longer journeys, EV drivers will need to make use of the growing network of publicly accessible electric car charging points at various locations such as car parks, dealerships and motorway service stations. Take a look at Zap-Map. a UK-wide electric car charging point map showing over 5,500 charging points across over 2,000 locations to find charging points near you or on a typical route.
