Types of Aid – Scholarships

Your UWF financial aid package will be made up of a combination of awards depending on your academic standing and your financial need. Awards including scholarships, grants, loans, and federal work-study opportunities are all part of what makes a UWF education affordable.

The scholarship application period is currently open! Please log into the my.uwf scholarship portal and complete your application!


A scholarship is “non-repayable” aid and is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, athletic skills, special talents, and sometimes demonstrated financial need. UWF offers a wide range of scholarships that are awarded to new and continuing undergraduate students.

UWF Office of Financial aid and Scholarships Information

The UWF Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships awards a limited number of need/merit scholarships to undergraduate students. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required.

  1. Log onto with your UWF username and password.
  2. Search “UWF Scholarship Portal”
  3. Alternatively, you may go directly to the UWF Scholarship application by logging onto with your UWF username and password.
  4. Complete and submit the General Application.
  5. Review your Recommended opportunities (at the top of the UWF Scholarship Application, hover over ‘Opportunities’ and then click, ‘Recommended’).

Some scholarships may ask additional questions specific to that particular scholarship. Click the ‘Apply’ button to answer any remaining questions.

If no action is required on a Recommended scholarship then your General application is all that is required.

UWF Office of Undergraduate Admissions Scholarship Information

Several scholarships will also require the results of the FAFSA to be eligible. The vast majority of scholarships are awarded to students entering during the fall semester; however, scholarships are available for spring term entrants on a limited basis. Some scholarships are renewable and others are one-time awards. Learn more at Admissions Awards and Aid .

Scholarship Consideration: To be considered for any award, first-year students should be admitted prior to December 1. For those scholarships that consider financial need, please submit your FAFSA by March 1.

Renewal Criteria: Generally a 3.0 cumulative UWF GPA is required for renewal. If there is a higher minimum standard and/or credit hour requirement, it will be included in the award notification. Renewable UWF scholarships require continuous, full-time enrollment (excluding summer) at UWF. Students must remain in good academic standing. Once lost due to academics, a scholarship will not be reinstated if GPA improves.

UWF Academic Merit and Departmental Scholarship Information

Some academic departments award merit-based funds. These scholarships are awarded directly by the department. Contact the Dean’s Office in your College for additional information and application procedures. Graduate students may also contact the Graduate School for information on scholarships.

UWF Athletic Scholarship Information

Athletic Scholarships are awarded by the coach of each individual sport. Contact the Athletics Department for information on scholarship availability.

Bright Futures

We are notified of your Bright Futures eligibility when you complete the Florida Financial Aid Application, however you must list UWF as the institution you plan to attend. You may add or update this information on the State of Florida’s website or by calling the State at 1-888-827-2004.

Florida Bright Futures is a merit-based scholarship for Florida residents who graduate from a Florida high school. Contact your high school guidance counselor to determine your eligibility.

  • Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) – 2016-17: $103 per credit hour
  • Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS)- 2016-17: $77 per credit hour
  • Students are required to repay the Bright Futures award for any course withdrawal.

A FAS or FMS scholarship recipient, who graduates with a baccalaureate degree in seven or fewer semesters, or in 105 semester hours or fewer, may receive funding for one semester of graduate study, not to exceed 15 credit hours paid at the undergraduate rate. Graduate school funding must be used within the student’s five year award timeframe (within five years from high school graduation).

UWF does not encourage you to ever pay for this service because there are quality sites that are free of charge.     California’s lemon law statute, the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, protects used cars in several different ways. First, all used automobiles that are purchased or leased from a California car dealership during the original manufacturer’s warranty period qualify for protection under the new car lemon law. So if you purchased a used car, truck, or SUV in the Golden State before it was either 3 years old or had 36,000 miles on the odometer (or if it otherwise is still covered under the original manufacturer’s warranty), then check this site’s California new car lemon law page to see if you are entitled to a lemon law buyback.

    Used Automobiles Sold With a Dealer Warranty Are Covered Under the Used Car Lemon Law

    Unlike some other states, in California used cars qualify for protection under the used car lemon law only if they are sold with a warranty. As stated above, if they are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty (which is typically 3 years/36,000 miles, but can be more for some manufacturers), then they may still qualify for coverage under the new car lemon law. If no manufacturer’s warranty came with the vehicle, then the dealer must have provided a warranty in order for the used car lemon law to apply.

    Dealers’ warranties are typically limited to periods between 30 days to 3 months, but may be longer depending on the dealership. You can tell whether or not you received a dealer warranty by looking at the document called the Buyer’s Guide. Federal law mandates that Buyer’s Guides must be prominently displayed on used automobiles (usually in one of the windows) while they are being offered for sale. The Buyer’s Guide has two boxes on it, one labeled “Warranty” and the other “As Is.” If the warranty box is checked, then your vehicle came with a dealer warranty.     So-Called “Extended Warranties” Are Not Actually Warranties

    Many consumers purchase so-called “extended warranties” with their used cars. Unfortunately however, for the purposes of the California lemon law these are not warranties at all, but “service contracts.” The California lemon law was designed to ensure that car dealerships and manufacturers honor the warranties that they offer on their goods. But “extended warranties” are not the dealer’s promise that the vehicle is in good condition; rather, they are a third party’s promise to repair the vehicle if it breaks down. So unfortunately, if your vehicle only came with an “extended warranty,” then you probably do not qualify for coverage under California’s used car lemon law.

    The only known exception to this rule is service contracts that require you to take your used car back to the selling dealer so that it can perform all of the repairs. If your “extended warranty” requires that the selling dealer fix your vehicle whenever there is a problem, then you should to talk to an expert lemon law attorney to find out whether it qualifies as a warranty under California’s used car lemon law.

    How the Used Car Lemon Law Protects You if You Received a Dealer Warranty

    If the dealer provided a warranty with your used car, then you are protected in two significant ways. First, during the term of the warranty you are protected in much the same way as the new car lemon law for the parts and components covered by the warranty. Dealer warranties usually cover only certain parts and components, but if one of those components fails causing a substantial defect then the dealer must fix it within a reasonable number of attempts or offer you a lemon law buyback if it is unable to do so.

    Second, for all used cars sold with a dealer warranty of any kind, California’s lemon law statute imposes an “implied warranty of merchantability.” The implied warranty of merchantability lasts for a minimum of 30 days. If the dealer’s warranty is longer than 30 days, then the implied warranty of merchantability lasts for same period of time as the dealer’s warranty.

    So what good is the implied warranty of merchantability? The main benefit of the implied warranty of merchantability is that it is not limited to the specific parts and components covered by the dealer’s warranty. It covers the entire vehicle. That being said, it is a very basic warranty. It only requires that your used car provide you with reliable, safe transportation during the warranty period. It won’t cover a malfunctioning radio or sound system because that type of defect does not prevent your use of the vehicle. But if your vehicle’s door locks stop working (or if anything else goes wrong preventing your safe, reliable use of the vehicle) the implied warranty of merchantability gives you a right to obtain free repairs or a refund during the warranty period regardless of whether or not the locks are covered by the dealer’s warranty.

    Under the implied warranty of merchantability, you can also avoid paying deductible and co-payments that might otherwise be required under the dealer’s warranty. For example, some dealers offer 30 day warranties on used car engines, but the warranties require that you pay 50% (or some other portion) of the parts and/or labor. But if your engine completely fails (or the implied warranty of merchantability is implicated in some other way), then the implied warranty of merchantability can force the dealer to provide repairs for free without any charge to you.

    If you purchased a used car with a dealer warranty that turns out to be a lemon, you should call a qualified lemon law attorney to discuss your case, regardless of whether or not the defect is specifically covered by the dealer’s warranty. In spite of what the dealer is telling you, you may be entitled to free repairs or a full refund.

    The only car here sold exclusively as an electric should ace this test, right? Nissan s expensive and risky clean-sheet approach should give it no excuses for falling short of outright total domination. And indeed, the Leaf does a lot of things very well.

    Push the blue button on the steering wheel and the nav display handily shows your range in concentric circles on the map, the larger one a one-way trip, the smaller for a round trip. Push it again to be shown the nearest charging stations. The center screen also can show you current energy consumption by both the drive motor and the car s auxiliary systems (the Fit and Spark also have a version of this), plus a full menu of energy data, from your consumption history to your recharge times based on several levels of charging power.

    No question, the Leaf s creators fretted over its EV-centric details, even if the baggy styling could use a little work. The real problem for us is that the Leaf isn t as composed as the Focus and the Fit, and it isn t much fun to drive.

    The Smart s last-place finish isn t the result of some grudge against tiny vehicles, even ones that look like Willy Wonka s car if Willy Wonka ran a Ukrainian cathouse. We totally buy the concept of the Smart, even applaud the former DaimlerChrysler for first putting it into production way back in 1998. We just don t buy its execution. In striving so earnestly to be different, Smart forgot to make a good car.

    The handling is just bizarre. The steering is epically slow, and it s nearly impossible to take a clean line through a corner as the front and rear ends quibble over which way to go. From overhead, your path would look octagonal. Heading straight down a highway, your senses are prodded to confusion by strange side forces as the car stumbles over bumps and suddenly gets the wiggles for no obvious reason. The floor-mounted brake pedal is abrupt. Even if you never leave the city, where the Smart is designed to thrive, you ll still live in fear of hard stops, hard rights, and curved on-ramps.
