2015 Ford Mustang potentially ‘leaked’ by Car and Driver

Few upcoming debuts have been as eagerly anticipated as the all-new Ford Mustang that’s expected to debut shortly as the Mustang’s 50th anniversary year approaches. Well, Car and Driver magazine would have us wait no longer as it claims to be leaking Ford’s new global pony car early.

Of course what you’re looking at is just as likely to be a composite rendering based on what C/D projects the new Mustang to look like, but to our eyes it looks spot on. Combining design traits from the Evos Concept with classic Mustang signatures and Ford’s Aston-inspired grille treatment, C/D’ s images including a complete 360-degree digital navigator show a Mustang not only for the modern era, but also for global distribution, taking a quintessentially American car to markets its predecessors were never designed for.

Those global considerations are expected to spell the demise of the outgoing Mustang’s holdout live rear axle in favor of an independent suspension, and a slight constricting of the exterior dimensions. And thanks to a separate leak, coming from a digital survey, we have apparent confirmation of what will power the new pony car. While the existing 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 engines will apparently carry over with only slight adjustments in output, the survey confirms a new 2.4-liter turbo four will be positioned in between them, offering slightly more power than the V6 but markedly improved fuel economy for a manageable $560 premium over base.

Car and Driver reports that Ford could replace the base V6 with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost from the Taurus SHO. slot the current supercharged 5.8 into the new GT500 and an all-new twin-turbo V8 into a new GT350. The successor to the Boss 302. however, could go with the new engine or stick with the previous one. We’ll have to wait a little longer, but hopefully not much, to see how this all plays out. In the meantime you can head over to C/D to delve into their project details and play around with the virtual navigator.

Car Rental Services Review

Car Rental Services: What to Look For

When comparing the top car rental companies, we looked at four main criteria: deals and services, types of rentals available, ease of use, and customer support. The best car rental services also offer hybrid vehicles and other fuel-efficient options for environmentally and economically conscious customers. Below is an explanation of the criteria we used to evaluate each car rental service.

Deals Services

A good car rental company has all the standard services you need for a seamless rental experience. The service having multiple locations across the United States is important if you are taking a road trip. You don’t want to be forced to adjust your travel plans around a location. Many companies offer the convenience of online reservation and check-in to avoid the hassles of long lines.

Some companies also offer extra services, such as infant car seat rental, prepaid tolls and GPS options, to make your life easier. It’s also nice to use a rental service that offers carbon offset programs, which shows it is a company concerned about issues bigger than itself.

We looked for sites that had a location finder on the homepage with a map, so you know exactly where to go to pick up your car. We prefer sites where a reservation tool is the first thing you see when you log in. We also looked for sites with a search tool, so you can find the information you need quickly.

Help Support

A car rental service should be easy to use and have the vehicles and services you need so you can enjoy your trip instead of dealing with car-rental headaches. You should be able to do as much of the reservation and check-in process online as you can so you spend less time at the reservation counter. The best rental services offer long-term and group rentals, along with options for protecting the environment. We found the services that will make your car rental experience affordable, practical and fun.

  • Low fuel economy

Scion tC Review

The 2015 Scion tC impresses reviewers with its spacious interior and low starting price, but they note it can’t match some rival coupes’ performance.

The 2015 Scion tC is ranked:

Some auto writers report that the 2015 Scion tC’s standard four-cylinder engine generates sufficient power for driving in the city, while others think it delivers sluggish acceleration and feels less powerful than its competitors. Critics say the standard six-speed manual transmission shifts seamlessly. They also praise the optional six-speed automatic transmission for its rapid shifts and rev-matching feature that increases engine speed while downshifting for a more athletic ride. The 2015 tC earns an EPA-estimated 23/31 mpg city/highway with either transmission, which is low for the class. Critics write that the tC handles confidently, but some say that rival coupes are more agile. Additionally, reviewers note that the tC rides harshly over imperfect roads.

There are seats for five in the 2015 Scion tC, and critics give its rear seat rare praise for a coupe, saying it has enough room for adults and is easy to climb into and out of. The front seats are comfortable and easy to adjust, they add. Reviewers say the cabin looks low-end with too much plastic trim and too little padding. The base Scion tC comes standard with Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB ports and an eight-speaker Pioneer audio system with a 6.1-inch touch screen. A BeSpoke audio system is available as a dealer-installed option, which includes navigation and smartphone app integration. Auto writers find that the tC s controls are clear and easy to use, and they like that the available BeSpoke system offers navigation and smartphone integration.

“While the 2015 Scion tC isn’t as quick as its sporty styling suggests, it still holds appeal for buyers who want an affordable, good-looking and fun-to-drive coupe.” — Kelley Blue Book “The Scion tC is a compact coupe that belies its sporty looks with a comfortable ride and predictable but uninspired handling. A corner carver it is not, yet for buyers seeking a stylish and practical machine for a relatively low purchase price, the tC will likely fit the bill.” — Left Lane News “The 2015 Scion tC is an appealing entry-level coupe, thanks to a roomy cabin, generous features list and snappy performance.” — Edmunds

Other Cars to Consider

Critics say the Mini Hardtop is one of the most fun-to-drive hatchbacks in the class, with sharp handling and peppy turbocharged engine options. They also add that the Mini Hardtop has an upscale interior with quality materials and soft surfaces.

The Honda Civic offers a continuously variable transmission that reviewers say is very smooth and uses the engine s power efficiently. The Civic also gets better fuel economy than the tC, and reviewers appreciate its attractive, high-quality interior.

Details: 2015 Scion tC

The Scion tC is a two-door hatchback that seats five and has front-wheel drive. It is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic. The tC was redesigned for the 2011 model year, and sees no major changes for 2015. As a result, this overview uses applicable research and reviews from the 2011 to 2015 model years.

TopSpeed s 15 Worst Cars of the Decade

Ranking the best cars is fun, but ranking the worst is like frolicking on a perfect beach, it just never gets old. Taking into consideration that the year is almost complete, we wanted to rank the worst vehicles of the decade and seeing as how there were so many, ten just wasn t enough.

Some weren t very hard to think of, stuff like the Chevrolet Aveo and the Smart ForTwo were obviously going to be on the list, but there were a few that will shock you. If one sentence can sum up our thought process during this evaluation it would be this, high sales don t mean anything .

Look at the Chevrolet Impala and the Jeep Wrangler . Both sell fairly well, but both are awful. The Impala is fat and drives like a boat and the Wrangler is an off-road machine that most won t take in their yard, leaving it hard and uncompromising on the road. Despite these two perfect examples of automotive incompetence, both didn t make the list.

Find out what did by hitting the jump.

Daewoo Cars

Daewoo Motors is a Korean automobile company that was founded in 1978 and sold most of its holdings to General Motors after going bankrupt in the early 2000s. The company was once a part of the larger Daewoo Group, a powerful Korean conglomerate that produced everything from consumer to heavy industry goods.

Daewoo Through The Years

While Daewoo Motors could be regarded as a company with a relatively brief history, it can in fact trace its roots back to the National Motor company, which was founded in South Korea as far back as 1937. In 1962, the company underwent the first of many name changes and re-brandings to emerge as Saenara Motors, establishing itself as the first Korean automotive company in the process.

In 1965, Saenara Motors was acquired by Shinjin Industrial who rechristened it Shinjin Motors and began a professional relationship with Japanese automaker, Toyota. However, Toyota’s involvement wasn’t destined to last, and in 1972, the company partnered with General Motors under the marque General Motors Korea. However, in 1976, the company changed its name again, this time to Saehan Motor.

Finally, in 1982, the Daewoo Group took over the company, changing it to what it’s currently known as the Daewoo Motor Company. The company began producing cars based on General Motors models. Early Daewoos included such models as the Royale XQ, Royale Duke, and Royale Salon Super.

Daewoo’s joint venture with GM eventually collapsed, which rendered Daewoo an independent automobile company in 1992. Four years later, the company introduced its first vehicle, which wasn’t based on a GM vehicle, the Lanos.

Daewoo in America

After successfully and independently operating from GM, Daewoo Motors ran into financial trouble. In an effort to downsize itself, the company sold its automotive division to General Motors in 1999.

During this period of transition, Daewoo began producing the popular Leganza, a midsize sedan that sold well in the U.S. in 1997 to 2002. The Lanos was another Daewoo model that was briefly popular, stateside. However, that model was discontinued in 2002 to make way for the Daewoo Kalos, which was also known as the Chevrolet Aveo.

Although the Daewoo brand ceased to introduce new cars into the U.S. market in 2002, the company continues to produce cars like the Aveo that enter the North American market through its partnership with GM.

Daewoo Models

Daewoo produced a number of different models aimed at various segments of the markets over the years. The Leganza was popular in the U.S. as to a lesser extent was the Lanos.

The Leganza was a midsize sedan and notably styled by renowned Italian auto designer Giorgetta Giugiaro, who designed cars for Alfa Romeo, BMW and Lamborghini among others. The Leganza was powered by a four-cylinder engine and came equipped with a five-speed manual transmission.

The Lanos was available as a hatchback and a sedan during its production run, which lasted from 1997 until 2002. The car was powered by a 105-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and came with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The Lanos was known for cornering well and providing good fuel economy. The Lanos was eventually phased out to make way for the Daewoo Kalos, which remains in worldwide production under different names today.

Daewoo Products and Technologies

The Daewoo Group largely made its name in Korea by offering quality technology and household goods that were affordable. Things were really no different when it came to cars. Daewoo Motors entered the U.S. market by providing affordable vehicles that were generally reliable and fuel efficient.

Daewoo continues to be involved in cars produced in partnership with GM through GM Korea. In fact, the company currently manufactures versions of the popular Chevrolet models, the Malibu, and Orlando. However, Daewoo’s bankruptcy and buyout by General Motors in 2002 effectively ended the production of Daewoo vehicles in the United States. Nonetheless, many used Leganzas, Kalos, and Lanos remain on the road today. Drivers continue to appreciate the various Daewoo models now as they did then, for being fuel-efficient compacts that offered a certain style, while perhaps not always being the most reliable of vehicles.

The Chevrolet Aveo is the closest thing to a Daewoo vehicle that’s still available to American drivers. The Aveo is in fact marketed around the world under a variety of different names and brands. Nonetheless, it remains a popular seller throughout North America, the Middle East, Chile, Israel, Japan, Australasia, and parts of Central and South American. The Aveo features a six-speed automatic transmission and a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. Recently, the Aveo was rebranded in the U.S. as the Chevrolet Sonic.

Daewoo Motor

If you are looking for Daewoo Motors you should know that they were sold to General Motors in 2001. For a while they are called GM Daewoo, but since 2011 they are now know as GM Korea.

Daewoo Motor was founded in 1937.

While Daewoo s never had much success in the United States, they certainly paved the way for other Korean cars such as Hyundai, Kia and Proto and Samsung (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_automobile_manufacturers#South_Korea ).

I personally really like the look of the new Hyundai models myself and may get one in the near future.

Daewoo Motor were very important South-Korean a motorcar company which is established in 1967. They produced small and fun compact auto’s at a time restricted for before encountering financial problems and going bankrupt.

In their successful days, Daewoo Motor were bound as highest in the South-Korean government both financially and political. At present, Daewoo still active in the different industries, but General Motor engines have many of their car-mobile departments which have been bought now out independently.

The Cheapest New Cars of 2014

Update: I have since published a list of the cheapest new cars of 2015. What follows is for the 2014 model year.

If you re new to this blog and in the market for a new car, you might as well start your search with a list of the least expensive new cars on the market. And this post serves as just that a list of the cheapest new cars of 2014 .

I research and revise this list each year you can find last year s cheapest new cars here. for comparison and since dealers want to move on to 2014, you might be able to find a great deal on last year s models.

But before you take this article as a testimonial to run out and buy a new car here is my advice:

  1. Live without a car, if at all possible (take public transportation/bike/walk).
  2. If you have a significant other, downsize from 2 cars to 1, if you can. I did this about 5 years ago and it s been a HUGE cost saver .
  3. Drive your existing car as long as it is economically feasible to continue doing so.
  4. If you do need a car, look long and hard for a great deal. I don t believe in the always buy used motto. Sometimes new cars are the cheaper option if you can find a great deal and you ride it until its death, particularly with the used car market being over-priced, as it has been in recent years. Do your homework to find the most economical option for you.

We good? OK, now I can rest easy.

Pricing Out a Vehicle

There is a whole lot more to finding the cheapest vehicle than just looking at sticker price. In this post, for your convenience, I ve included:

  • the base auto transmission model (manuals are often cheaper, but hard to find and sell)
  • the MSRP (which you should never pay)
  • the factory invoice

As well as other important variables that impact total cost:

  • city and highway MPG ratings
  • average annual fuel cost (from the EPA’s fueleconomy.gov at $3.24 per gallon, 15,000 miles driven (45% city, 55% highway).
  • length of powertrain and basic warranties

You ll also want to price out insurance premiums at a number of insurers BEFORE choosing a car to purchase.

Notes on the Cheapest New Cars of 2014

Not a huge list of newcomers this year.

One that is exciting, in its cheapness, if not styling is the Mitsubishi Mirage. This car enters the list at #4 as a 4-door hatchback. It gets outstanding fuel economy at 37 city and 44 highway, and carries an excellent warranty at 10 years or 100,000 miles for original owners, 5 years/60,000 for subsequent owners on powertrain, and 5 years 60,000 miles on a basic limited warranty.

There is a new cheapest new car this year, as the Nissan Versa surpasses the Smart Car ForTwo (which has had sizable price increases the past two years) for the #1 spot. The Versa also adds an S+ version to its lineup, which is the same as the basic, but with a continuously variable transmission which pushes it up to 40 MPG highway.

Most of these models did not exist 5 years ago, so it s encouraging to see a renewed focus by automakers on making compact, inexpensive vehicles.

None of these vehicles make my list of the most fuel efficient cars of 2014 because of their newer engine technology but most do have very respectable fuel economy due to their small sizes.

Foreign Automakers Still Own the Market for the Cheapest Cars

Foreign Automakers claim ownership of 7 of the top 10 cheapest new cars. The Spark and Sonic (Chevy) and Fiesta (Ford) are the only models to make the list from U.S. automakers.

Without further ado, here are the top 10 cheapest new cars of 2014 from #10 up to #1. What s your pick, if you had a choice?

10. Mazda 2

  • Base Automatic Transmission model: Mazda 2 Sport 4-Door Hatchback
  • Engine: 1.5L, 4-speed Auto Transmission, 16-valve, 4 cylinder, 100 HP
  • MSRP: $16,355
  • Factory Invoice: $16,354
  • City MPG: 28
  • Highway MPG: 34
  • Annual Fuel Cost: $1,600
  • Powertrain Warranty: 5 years or 100,000 miles
  • Limited Basic Warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Notes: The cousin to the Ford Fiesta, The Mazda2 actually has a 4-speed transmission vs. the Fiesta s 6-speed giving it lower fuel efficiency. Zero price increase year/year, while the Fiesta actually declined. My money is still on the Fiesta.

Consumer Reports: The most and least reliable cars

CONSUMER REPORTS – Consumer Reports has just released this year’s ratings of the most and least reliable new cars and carmakers. There are some big changes this year, with Infiniti dropping most dramatically in the ranks.

The most reliable new car you can buy is the Scion xB. That’s according to Consumer Reports’ reliability survey, which shows data on over a million vehicles. And there’s data on 28 brands as well.

Once again the most reliable brands are dominated by the Japanese, with Lexus, Toyota, and Mazda taking the top three spots. Honda came in at number four.

The four least reliable brands are Dodge, Ram, Jeep, and Fiat, all owned by Chrysler.

Consumer Reports says Chrysler has traditionally had more than its fair share of trouble, and with the addition of Fiat in the mix, it really has not helped. In fact the new Fiat 500L is ranked the least reliable car out of the 248 that Consumer Reports rated.

Some American brands did well. Lincoln shot up 12 spots this year, and Buick made it into the Top 10 list of reliable brands. It is the only American car to do so. GM has been one of the better domestic brands in terms of reliability. And Buick has often been its top brand.

The most reliable SUVs are the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, the Subaru Forester, the Toyota Highlander, and the Lexus RX.

A few first-year cars, such as the Mazda6 and Kia Cadenza, got high marks for reliability. But most didn’t. So if you’re looking for a reliable car, Consumer Reports says that it’s really not best to buy a car that’s in its first year of the redesign. Wait a year or two until they work out some of those bugs. Case in point, the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado, which Consumer Reports’ research shows had lots of problems in its first year.

Complete Ratings and recommendations on all kinds of products, including appliances, cars trucks, and electronic gear, are available on Consumer Reports’ website. Subscribe to ConsumerReports.org .

There are 48 different carmakers selling new vehicles in Australia at the moment. It’s hard enough to pick a certain brand, let alone a specific model. To make things easier we’ve devised a list of the top 10 cheapest passenger vehicles currently on sale in Australia, ascending from starting prices that exclude on-road costs.

Suzuki Alto – $11,790

The Suzuki Alto has been famous (sort of) for being Australia’s cheapest car for a few years now. It’s the fourth most popular new car in the micro segment according to official VFACTS figures. So far this year 885 examples have been sold. It comes with a petite 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine producing 50kW and 90Nm, which helps make it one of the most fuel efficient new cars on the market, using an average of just 4.7L/100km. It is the third most economical in this lineup. The main drawback of the Alto is the seating capacity which is limited to just four. Standard features include Bluetooth, a multi-format six-speaker stereo, six airbags, and central locking. It misses out on a full five-star ANCAP safety rating, making do with four.

Holden Barina Spark – $12,490

Not to be confused with the regular Barina, the Barina Spark is a package directed at younger buyers. It’s considerably smaller and pokier, although sharing the same GM Gamma II platform with the Barina. It’s been the fifth most popular (716) in the segment so far this year. Power comes from a 1.2-litre four-cylinder producing 59kW and 107Nm. Even though it offers reasonable power it does present a good average fuel economy rating of 5.2L/100km. Inside, the Barina Spark offers seating for five, albeit tight in the rear centre seat. It doesn’t come with Bluetooth as standard but it does get eight airbags, central locking and air-conditioning. ANCAP has awarded it four stars.

Mitsubishi Mirage – $12,990

The Mirage is the most popular new vehicle in the micro segment, so far this year going out to an impressive 3916 buyers. It shines bright with an excellent average fuel consumption figure of 4.6L/100km, while power comes from a decent 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine developing 57kW and 100Nm. Five seats, Bluetooth, eight airbags, air-conditioning and a multi-format audio system as standard make it a complete bargain. Recent crash tests have given it a full five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Nissan Micra – $13,490

Nissan’s attack on the micro segment, fittingly named the Micra, is the third most popular behind the more expensive Fiat 500. Punters will enjoy a vast array of standard features, such as Bluetooth, air-con, and keyless entry. In fact, the Micra is one most comprehensively-equipped vehicles in the segment, with eight airbags, electronic brake force distribution, as well as stability and traction control. Strangely, it’s only been awarded a four-star ANCAP safety rating. The average fuel economy is rated 5.9L/100km.

Volkswagen Up! – $13,990

Introducing the well-received Volkswagen Up. the newest nameplate in the micro vehicle market. It boasts the best fuel economy average in the class, at 4.4L/100km, and one of the very best consumption figures in the industry for a non-hybrid regular combustion engine vehicle. Passenger accommodation is restricted to four due to its tiny dimensions, however, it is regarded as one of the most enjoyable drives out of all the budget-car specials. ANCAP has awarded it the full five stars, coming with quite advanced tech such as Crash Avoidance technology with braking as standard, and an electronic diff lock with stability and traction control. For some reason Volkswagen has decided not to provide Bluetooth, yet sat-nav is available as a fairly cheap option.

Toyota Yaris – $14,990

Like all Toyota models the Yaris is perhaps the most robust and user-friendly option in its class. It’s packaged very well for an entry-level vehicle, coming standard with Bluetooth and voice recognition, a trip computer, four cup holders, five seats, air-con, and a class benchmark nine airbags, with of course five-star ANCAP safety. Push is provided by a 63kW/121Nm 1.3-litre four-cylinder, which consumes 5.7L/100km on the official combined cycle test. It is priced at the higher end of this order.

Holden Barina – $14,990

Australians know the Barina badge like the back of their hands. It’s built by a well-known brand in Australia – although being produced in Korea – and it rides on the widely-used and trusted global Gamma II General Motors platform. It’s a fun car to drive with a reasonably powerful 85kW 1.6-litre engine. With accommodation for five, the Barina offers passengers a wide range of standard features. ANCAP has also awarded it the full five-star seal of approval. The main drawback is its relatively high fuel economy of 6.8L/100km.

Honda Jazz – $14,990

Easily the most practical and roomy offering here, with flip-down rear seats that transform it into a miniature wagon. It’s the second most powerful here thanks to a 1.5-litre iVTEC four-cylinder developing 88kW and 145Nm. Honda has cleverly set the equipment benchmark with the Jazz by giving it a touch-screen interface with a rear-view camera as standard. No other vehicle here offers this. ANCAP is yet to crash test the recently updated model, however, the previous version (2011-on) was given the full five stars. Fuel economy is rated at 6.2L/100km.

Chery J3 – $14,990

You might not have heard of the brand but the Chery J3 is easily the biggest and most powerful car here. In that sense, it provides the most car for the money. Power comes from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder producing 93kW and 160Nm. From there, it starts to go down hill. It doesn’t offer an especially noteworthy list of standard features. The fuel economy is the highest here, rated at 8.3L/100km, and ANCAP is yet to test its level of safety. Of all the Chery models ANCAP has tested, none of them have managed to score over three stars.

Consumer Reports: The Most and Least Reliable Cars

Consumer Reports has just released this year’s ratings of the most and least reliable new cars and carmakers. There are some big changes this year, with Infiniti dropping most dramatically in the ranks. (Published Friday, Oct 31, 2014)

Consumer Reports has just released this year s ratings of the most and least reliable new cars and carmakers. There are some big changes this year, with Infiniti dropping most dramatically in the ranks.

The most reliable new car you can buy is the Scion xB. That s according to Consumer Reports reliability survey, which shows data on over a million vehicles. And there s data on 28 brands as well.

But most didn t. So if you re looking for a reliable car, Consumer Reports says that it s really not best to buy a car that s in its first year of the redesign. Wait a year or two until they work out some of those bugs. Case in point, the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado, which Consumer Reports research shows had lots of problems in its first year.

    Comparing Car Rental Rates

Comparing car rental rates ensures that you’re getting the best prices available. I don’t believe that there is one cheapest car rental company or one best company. I think the better company is the one that gives you what YOU want at a great price. Costs will depend on the particulars of your rental: Locations, Dates & Times and Vehicle Size .

The company that gave you the best car rental rate for your trip last year, may not necessarily be the cheapest provider for that trip you’ve planned next month. You need to compare vehicles and rates to make sure that you always get the greatest offer!

I believe that doing some research and booking in advance will give you the best possible price.

An easy way of comparing car rental rates is to use a booking site to check different company’s rates. Then try the specific company’s website to see if you can get the rental car rate even cheaper by using a discount code. There are hundreds of membership programs and professional associations that offer discount codes to their members.

    Comparing Car Rental Rates Test

Always compare bottom line prices including taxes. and remember, although I didn’t check any optional purchases here, if you’re going to be looking at insurance, car seats, additional drivers, etc. those prices vary. include them in your bottom line when you compare rental cars and companies!

I checked on a major booking site for a midsize car at Newark, New Jersey Airport (EWR) for a 7 day rental in early December. Comparing rates between 6 national car rental companies, I found the following ( links open in a new window):

Enterprise at $524.02, National at $559.31, Budget at $584.05 and finally, Hertz at $592.53

Let’s say I have a membership with Allstate Motor Club. I went back to each car rental company’s website and checked the rates using a car rental discount code for Allstate Motor Club members with Enterprise, Avis, National, Budget and Hertz. The savings were:

The Enterprise rate went down to $315.19 (a savings of about 4%)

The Avis rate went down to $475.99 (a savings of about 9%).

    The National rate remained unchanged.

The Budget rate went down to $520.43 (a savings of about 10.9%)

The Hertz rate went down to $432.47 (a savings of about 27%)

In this case, the cheapest rate is still with Enterprise.com jumped them to second place.

Car Insurance In Canada: Things You Should Know

    Shopping for Auto Insurance Quotes

The rates charged by different car insurance companies to insure the same car and driver can vary by hundreds and even thousands of dollars, so it pays to shop around. The key is to find the insurance company that has the lowest rate available, but with so many car insurance companies, calling around to get comparative quotes can be hard work and very time consuming. This is where getting instant online car insurance quotes which compare the rates from a broad cross-section of the available insurance companies can help.

How to get Cheap Car Insurance

There are many factors that play a role in determining your auto insurance premiums. Here are some ways to save money:

    • Be sure to shop your rate each year
    • Pay your premiums on time
    • Use winter tires
    • bundle different insurance products, like home, motorcycle etc
    • Increase your deductible

    Auto Insurance in Canada

In Canada, the law requires all licensed drivers to have auto insurance. But the rates consumers are charged depend on a wide variety of variables, all of which are assessed independently by every insurance company.

Auto insurance companies look at your driving profile, which includes things like the make and model of car you drive, your age, your gender, where you live, the number of tickets and accidents on your record, etc.; and use that information to assess the risk of you making a claim in the future which then determines your rates.

There are also differences across Canada in terms of how the auto insurance industry is administered and regulated depending on the province. In British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, auto insurance is administered by the government. Car Insurance in Ontario. Alberta. Nova Scotia. New Brunswick. Prince Edward Island and all other provinces except Quebec, is administered by the private sector and a large number of private insurers. Finally, Quebec has a hybrid model: The government insures against injuries to people, and private insurers cover you for property damage.

Car insurance is distributed to consumers through different networks of licensed insurance professionals. They are:

    • Insurance Brokers Provide independent and expert advice, advocacy and support to consumers with respect to their car insurance needs and typically work with, and sell policies for, a number of different insurance companies.
    • Insurance Agents Provide expert advice, advocacy and support to consumers with respect to their car insurance needs and work with, and sell policies for, one insurance company.
    • Direct Writers (Direct Response Insurers) Provide expert advice, selling and servicing property and casualty insurance products, including auto insurance, in Canada through direct response marketing and distribution for one insurance company.

    Why Have Auto Insurance?

As with all types of insurance, auto insurance exists to protect consumers against future losses. By pooling the risks of individual consumers and charging each a small premium, insurance companies ensure that there are adequate funds available to pay the claims made by a subset of those risks. The types of things typically covered under a standard auto insurance policy in Canada include:

    • Third-Party Liability. This coverage protects you in the event of an accident causing loss or damage to another person when you are at fault.
    • Accident Benefits. This coverage offers benefits to protect you if you are injured in an accident regardless of who caused the accident.
    • Uninsured Automobile Coverage. This coverage protects you in the event of death or injury caused by an uninsured motorist or by a hit-and-run.

In addition, optional coverage that is available on most car insurance policies include:

    • Loss or Damage Coverage. This would include: All Perils, Collision, Comprehensive and Specified Perils. You can purchase a combination of these to protect you against loss of or damage to your automobile caused by collision, fire, theft, and a variety of other unpredictable risks.

Once you have received your online insurance quote from InsuranceHotline.com, we will connect you with a licensed car insurance broker or agent in Canada who will walk through the quote with you and answer any additional questions that you may have.

Commerce City car dealer nets 4 year prison term for money laundering

    Updated: 12/01/2015 06:14:24 PM MST

A Commerce City car dealer has been sentenced to four years in federal prison in connection with a money laundering conspiracy.

Raul Mendoza, age 51, of Denver, was sentenced Nov. 20 by U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Colorado, media release.

Mendoza laundered money through Chopeque Auto Sales, 6011 Quebec St. which he owned.

According to an indictment and plea agreement, Mendoza, from February 2008 through May 2012, conspired with others to launder drug money, according to the release.

Mendoza and others would intentionally, and unlawfully, keep business deposits under $10,000 with the intent to evade reporting requirements spelled out by law.

From February 2008 through May 2012 Mendoza’s business structured over 700 deposits totaling $4,543,714.

“Money is the fuel that drives and motivates drug dealers, and for that reason, laundering drug money is a serious federal offense,” said U.S. Attorney John Walsh in the release. “During the investigation of a drug trafficking organization, it was determined that this car dealer was laundering proceeds to hide illegal conduct. Thanks to banking laws, it was one key way law enforcement was able to identify the dealership’s involvement in the unlawful activity.”

    Classic Cars For Sale

Even with motoring costs at an all time high and Gatso cameras on every corner, there’s still a lot of fun to be had when out and about on the road – if you drive a classic that is.

If you like cars but are becoming increasingly tired of the pace and pressure of modern motoring, then nothing can compare to the relaxing pleasure of driving a classic along a favourite road with the sun shining, the radio belting out an equally memorable golden oldie and feeling good about yourself. As alternative medicine goes, it simply can’t be bettered.

Of course, you can’t talk about old cars without starting off the age-old debate of just what is a classic car? There’s no definite answer to this. But rest assured you don’t need to buy a Ferrari to say you own a classic!

At Classic Cars For Sale magazine we like all types: family cars, sports cars, vintage cars, British classic cars and even vans – because we define a classic as a vehicle that has stood the test of time and is now fondly remembered for putting fun into driving and ownership. In a word it’s down to character – lots of it!

And the good news is that ‘Classic Cars UK’ is doing very well even in these depressed times and this is because canny motorists have realised that apart from providing enormous fun, owning a classic car can also be a shrewd investment for the future or even an heirloom to pass down the family line, as many have done so.

    Classic Cars

The beauty of our hobby is that you don’t need to be a lottery winner to join in and feel welcome. It’s fantastic to own a Ferrari, of course, but you can have just as much fun and fulfilment by looking at cheap classic cars that can be bought for perhaps just hundreds of pounds. Classic car sales are to be found everywhere – private sales, auctions and even specialist classic car dealers who both sell and buy classics along with repairing and restoring them. By and large they are a friendly helpful bunch and a world away from your usual motor dealer because they love classics as much as we do!

It’s important to remember that one the hidden joys of owning a classic car is the friendly new world that is unlocked as soon as you turn the ignition key, care of a superb social scene that comes free with every classic. Special car shows, driving events and tours, motorsport or simply a get together down the local along with fellow enthusiasts… Once you own a classic car, it’s down to you just how much you want to become engrossed in this new enjoyable pastime. Be warned however, it’s contagious but you’ll enjoy every minute of it – even when toiling under the bonnet!

If this has whetted your appetite for a classic car then make sure you buy Classic Cars For Sale each month – or do it the easy way and take out a subscription. Every issue is packed with hundreds of classic cars for sale, backed by dedicated buying guides and road tests on every make and model, plus all the latest news and views on the burgeoning and brilliant British classic car scene.

Located in beautiful downtown Clearwater, Florida, USA, P.J.’s offers visitors a chance to stroll down Memory Lane with spacious showrooms featuring over 150 Classic, Muscle, and Collectible Cars from the 1920s and up. Camaros, Chevelles and Mustangs sit gleaming beside Corvettes, GTOs, Road Runners and Olds 442s, each waiting for a new owner to relive a memory or create a new adventure!

P.J.’s Auto World offers a wide range of services that include selling, consigning, locating, financing, and shipping worldwide. Classic and Muscle Cars are fun to own and drive! The remarkable thing about purchasing a Classic, Convertible, or Collectible vehicle is that unlike many late model vehicles that tend to quickly depreciate, Classics are rapidly appreciating between 15 and 25 percent annually! Several leading financial articles suggest Americans should invest in Real Estate and Classic Cars, as they’re not making more of either ! In 2003, P.J.’s expanded to better serve their customers and opened a second Classic Car Showroom also located in Clearwater, Florida.

P.J.’s Auto World has an excellent selection of vehicles available from an ever changing inventory, featuring thoroughbred sports cars, classic convertibles, vintage collectibles, and fun to drive automobiles for all tastes. Top 10 muscle cars of the 60s

    View all 7 photos

There are so many great muscle cars. it is hard to choose a winner. The muscle car era (’64-’72) featured a surplus of performance models, all ready and willing to satisfy a driver’s need for speed.

Still, placing these cars in a pre-determined order is akin to a quarter-mile race: it’s anyone’s game. Or guess.

Yet certain factors are undeniable, such as popularity and overall production numbers. For example, did this car change the performance landscape, or at least challenge the competition? Even when faced with overwhelming horsepower and engine toque readings, there’s more to declaring a winner than just presenting sheer performance numbers.

One great thing about of a bench-racing exercise such as this is the fact that it can be revised endlessly, by friends and cars fans alike.

Here’s a list of the Top 10 muscle cars of the ‘60s:

    #1) 1969 Camaro SS396

In sheer popularity alone, any ’69 Camaro – be it Super Sport, Z28, or even the ZL1 – would be a frontrunner. The car design was a stunner, a grand finale of the first-gen F-body (’67-’69). If this list had to choose, though, it would definitely have to consider the 396. It took an already-good new-for-’67 Super Sport package with a 350 small block V8, and upgraded to a big block. The SS396 Camaro became one of the leading symbols of the ‘60s muscle car wars.

    #2) 1968 Plymouth Road Runner

The newly restyled (for ’68) B-Body models for both Dodge and Plymouth were a hit. Take a stripped down, no-frills 2-door post coupe (i.e. cheap), power it with a fine 383 Mopar motor, and name it after a fast, cartoon character named Road Runner. It captivated not only a Saturday morning cartoon audience, but a youth buying market, too. Beep-Beep!

    #3) 1966 Plymouth Belvedere Hemi

The new 426 engine featured Hemi-head combustion chambers and was basically a de-tuned race motor. The big elephant motor, as it is known for its immense size and girth, made the B-body Mopar a beast on the street. Later models (most notably the ‘Cuda) would reap the rewards of the 426 Hemi’s fierce reputation.

Top 10 Ways To Get Top Dollar For Your Car

Although many assets appreciate in value as they age, a car is not one of them. Edmunds estimates that new cars lose as much as 20% of their value as soon as they are driven off the lot. But you can improve your car’s resale value and hold on to it longer by keeping it in good condition and allocating expenditures wisely. Read on for 10 ways to keep your car in peak condition – and preserve more of its value for when you want to sell it.

    Spend Wisely on Extras

Some people are drawn to expensive stereo equipment or navigation, while others prefer safety equipment or a sporty but expensive spoiler. However, adding expensive equipment to a car does not necessarily increase its value.

Many vehicle owners think they will be able to recoup the cost of after-market products they have installed at resale time, only to be disappointed when a prospective buyer isn’t willing to pay for the after-market accessories, so be wary of installing products you like, but that others may not.

Consider practical products, such as iPod connectors. Similarly, a bed liner for a truck may be worthwhile because it helps protect the bed against dings and scratches, which can help preserve the car’s value.

    Do Regular Maintenance and Check-Ups

Every vehicle manufacturer recommends regular maintenance ; the schedule depends on driving conditions and other factors. Manufacturers used to suggest changing your oil every 3,000 miles, but now some of them have increased their recommended intervals to 5,000 or even 10,000 miles, depending on driving patterns and conditions. Some car manufacturers recommend better-grade oils, such as 5W-20 instead of the usual 5W-30. Use the oil suggested by the manufacturers – don’t skimp on this one. If you do, your warranty may be voided because you did not follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for a new car. Regular, on-time maintenance will help keep your vehicle in good health and your money in your pocket over the long run.

Tire pressure is another important maintenance item. If neglected, low tire pressure can affect tire performance and safety. According to fueleconomy.gov, properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by about 3%. Keep tires properly inflated according to manufacturer recommendations. Don’t always go with 32/32 front and back; every vehicle is different, so check your manufacturer’s manuals.

Other regular servicing recommendations by vehicle manufacturers, such as changing air filters around every 15,000-20,000 miles and changing various other recommended fluids at set intervals (20,000, 40,000, 60,000, etc.) also affect the performance – and lifespan – of the car. Sometimes dealers offer special pricing on these services.

    Always Keep Records

Document all repairs and maintenance with receipts, and save them in a special folder. When you go to sell your car, these can be used to show the prospective buyer that you have maintained your vehicle.

    Check Your VIN Report

A vehicle identification number (VIN) report is like a car’s credit report. It is the first document a prospective buyer often pulls, before even looking at the car. The report usually discloses the full history of a vehicle from the day it lands on a dealer’s dock up to current ownership and includes changes of ownership, accidents, servicing, etc. Many dealers update this report automatically when they service a vehicle. That’s one reason to use the dealership for servicing, even though it might cost more compared to the local repair shop.

By checking the report every so often, you will know whether it shows all the activities or if any incorrect information has been added. If you see anything suspicious, instruct the insurance company that reported the incorrect information to the VIN-report preparer to correct the error.

    Keep Mileage Under Control

An important determinant of a vehicle’s value is the amount of mileage it has for its age; insurance companies also take mileage into account when setting premiums. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, annual mileage of roughly 13,500 a year is considered average. If you drive more than that it will detract from your car’s value; if you drive less than the average, your car is likely to depreciate at a slower rate.

    Looks Matter

Whether human or machine, first impressions are lasting. An ugly, ill-kept car does not reflect well on its owner, and experts believe that just by cleaning your car, you can add hundreds of dollars to its value when you sell. That doesn’t mean you have to use cleaning brushes every week and spend hours scrubbing and waxing. Just clean it periodically.

If you don’t have the time to clean your car, use a car wash. For more extensive adjustments to your car’s appearance. you can detail it yourself or take it to a detail shop. Use a coat of wax to protect your vehicle’s paint surface from nature’s elements.

    Keep It Clean

Even if you wash and detail your car frequently, it won’t matter much if you treat it like a cafeteria or designated smoking area. Avoid eating and drinking inside your car, even on long road trips. Don’t smoke and don’t allow anyone else to smoke in your car. Spills, cigarette smoke and stains can ruin the inside appearance and smell of your car and lower its resale value.

    Protect Its Appearance

Even the color of a vehicle can impact its resale value, so it is essential to keep your vehicle parked in a shaded place and to store it properly. If you live in an extremely cold or warm environment and you have the option to store your car inside, you should do so. Excessive sun can fade the outer surfaces of your car, including paint, trim and moldings. Additionally, extremely cold temperatures and environmental conditions can wreak havoc on your car’s internal engine components. By storing your car inside in a climate-controlled environment, you can help avoid costly and unnecessary repairs in the future.

Also try to avoid conditions that can damage the exterior finish of your car. Paint chips, gouges or fading can all decrease a car’s value. If your vehicle’s paint is less than ideal, consider having it painted prior to resale time and be sure to have a reputable paint expert or body shop perform the work. A nice-looking exterior finish can increase a car’s curb appeal and ultimately its value.

Although dents, scratches and other kinds of damage are sometimes unavoidable, it is important to remember that visible imperfections will impact resale value. Dent repair, a “light touch” procedure, can get rid of dents without sandblasting and expensive painting.

Other problems many vehicle owners face are rusting and unsightly stone chips. Repairing those chips with an inexpensive touch-up stick can dramatically improve your car’s appearance.

    Fix Small Problems Promptly

Many drivers tend to neglect small problems as long as the car still runs. Unfortunately, these are often warning signs of a more serious problem. Taking care of problems in a timely manner, whether mechanical or cosmetic, can often save money and help you avoid frustration. If you live in a cold climate with harsh winters, be sure to wash your vehicle often to remove salt deposits that can eventually lead to rust. Whenever possible, have your car undercoated to avoid salt deposits from building up on the frame and the underside of the quarter panels and fenders.

    Treat Your Car With Respect

Prevent excessive wear and tear by avoiding extreme start-and-stop driving, over-towing (or towing more weight than is recommended in your owner’s manual), excessive speeding or driving your vehicle in areas with poor road conditions.

Accidents, no matter how slight, can negatively impact a vehicle’s value and jeopardize personal safety. No matter how short the trip, avoid excessive speeds and erratic or irresponsible driving and always pay attention to the roadway and weather conditions.

    The Bottom Line

Whether you want your current car to last longer or you’re looking to get the most value at resale, make sure you get the most bang for your buck by staying on top of maintenance and cosmetic issues. By following these simple steps, you can increase your car’s value and get the most money when it comes time to sell.

    Classic Car Insurance Quotes Online

Classic Car Insurance is a must for all classic car owners. Recent statistics show that more than half of all classic cars are insured by a standard insurance company and not a collector car insurance plan, leaving your car at risk.

Recent statistics show that more than half of all classic cars are insured by a standard insurance company, which may not be the best choice. Many classic car owners think they will get a good deal from their current car insurance company since they already have one or more cars insured through them, but this is not usually the case. Generally the standard car insurance company does not have the best insurance price for collector cars, and your classic car could be substantially under insured since these insurance companies and their agents are not specifically classic car insurers.

Three choices of classic car insurance coverage There are three types of auto insurance available, and two of the three work for classic cars. The first available insurance type is ACV, or Actual Cash Value. THIS SHOULD NOT BE USED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE that I can think of. This is the plan that standard cars are insured under, and not designed for classic or collector cars. Under this plan, your car is insured for it’s depreciated book value, or determined by what you paid for the car, and not it’s collector or classic car value. An example would be if you bought a 1969 Pontiac GTO in 1976 for $3000. If the car was totaled, an ACV package would pay you $3000, not the actual value of the classic car, which would probably be 20 times as much in this case. It may not even be $3000 due to depreciation. Most standard insurance companies may try to get you on this plan if they do not offer the next two types. Move along, even if they are the insurance company for your current daily transportation vehicle(s).

Only the Stated Value and Agreed Value terms of service should be considered. The Stated Value insurance lets you state a value to the car, allowing you to go over the depreciated value. However, the stated value option does leave room for your car to depreciate, and the fine print will show that you may still not be fully insured for the exact stated amount. There are also deductibles usually with a stated value. The Agreed Value is the preferred choice of insurance for classic car owners. Under these plans, your classic car is covered 100% up to the agreed upon value of the car, and there are usually no deductibles. Your car does not depreciate under this option either, making it the best choice for insuring your classic car.

Hot rods and custom cars Hot rods and custom cars can also be covered with these specialty collector car insurance companies. It may involve more work with the insurance companies, and you will want to have all your documentation prepared before talking to them. Hot rods and other custom cars are tougher to put a value on due to their uniqueness. Insurance agents will want to see most receipts and labor charges involved in building or restoring the car, to assess the value. Specialty collector car insurance companies also understand details about collector cars. The insurance agents will add extra value to models that were built by famous or well known builders, and add value to models with original parts or rare options.

Classic Car Insurance Limitations With the agreed value insurance options, usually some or all of the following items are listed on the policy.

-Mileage restrictions; Generally there are monthly or yearly mileage restrictions put on the policy. Average restrictions are either 250 miles a month, or 2500 miles a year. Some insurance companies require yearly odometer readings. If this is a concern for you, it is possible to find packages that do not include these restrictions.

-Age restrictions; Most collector car insurance policies require the driver to be 25 years old, and some 30. Sometimes a minimum of a 10 year driving record that is fairly clean is also required.

-Garage required; Most insurance policies also require the classic car to be garaged. Hopefully this is not an issue with anyone. I can’t imagine having an $80,000 beautifully restored classic, and it sits in your driveway.

-Extra vehicles; Nearly all policies require you to prove you have another vehicle for daily transportation, and some policies even require one vehicle per driver in the household. You are generally not allowed to use the collector car for daily transportation or racing.

How to put a value on a classic car Insurance companies want to properly insure the value of their covered vehicles, so they may do a lot of research to get to the appropriate value. Classic cars that are still nearly stock with the original parts, are easier to put a value on since there are guides and other book price listings on these. Once you get into restored or hot rods, it becomes more work. Insurance companies will look into the amount spent to restore or build the car, what type of parts were used, and the amount of labor involved. Keeping detailed lists of work done and all receipts, including labor costs, is very important to get every penny your classic car is really worth. Certified appraisals can also be helpful, but not always necessary, especially if you have all the documentation and receipts. Keeping updated photos of your classic car is also a good idea.

Saving Opportunities Since the premiums are usually so low on classic cars, most insurance companies do not let you ‘drop’ or lower your insurance coverage, such as putting “theft, fire, or vandalism” during the winter months when it will not be driven. If your classic car is being restored and it’s up on blocks with the engine out, you should be able to negotiate something with your insurance agent. Another opportunity with classic car insurance companies is that many will allow you to have multiple cars for the same premium. The more classic cars you have, the premium stays the same. They see it as you can only drive one classic car at a time!

Periodic Reviews of Coverage You should periodically review your coverage and make any necessary adjustments. Restoration adds value to a car, so if you have recently or are in the process of restoring a car, you should look at raising the coverage. Also, classic cars are appreciating in value rapidly, especially over the last few years. Make sure your coverage is adequate.

Summary In summary, if you learn one thing from this article, it is to look into auto insurance from a collector car insurance company, and not from just your current standard insurance company. You can compare, but more than likely you will save up to 50% off of premiums with a collector car insurance company, PLUS your standard insurance company will likely not cover your classic car up to it’s real value. Only a collector car insurance company will give you lower premiums, and insure your classic car for what it’s really worth.

Antique Cars and Trucks. Antique Cars For Sale.

Antique cars is a common term for older classic cars that were manufacturered before 1940.  We have many of these cars for sale from manufacturers such as Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler. Buick, Plymouth, Studebaker, Nash, Packard, Hudson, Plymouth, and more!  Find your dream car on FossilCars.com!  You can also post your. car for sale.

When you are into collector cars you may or may not be a stickler for exact definitions, and in some cases they overlap, and it can become confusing. It really doesn’t matter to many of us, but technically, according to the Antique Automobile Club of America an antique car is a vehicle that is at least 45 years of age. They say that a “classic” car is somewhere between 20-45 years old, and the designation of the “true classic” is reserved for certain cars within that age group that are deemed as possessing a particular level of quality.

Car collecting is a lot of fun, and there are many antique automobile museums all around the country that have some unbelievable collections. The lines between classic and antique cars are indeed a little bit blurry in a practical sense, because a 1964 Corvette seems a lot more similar to a 1970 Camaro than a 1909 Model T Ford, and that is where formal definition sometimes fail us. In terms of the registration of vehicles as “antique cars” with your state’s motor vehicle department, the exact criteria can vary from state to state, so it is best to contact them directly or visit their website to obtain this information.

Top Five Most Valuable Matchbox Cars

After 60 years in business and too many models to count, Matchbox has produced plenty of die-cast miniatures now considered valuable by collectors. Here s a shortlist of the most rare (and most expensive) Matchbox vehicles ever.

    1953 Aveling Barford Road Roller

From 1947 until 1953, Leslie and Rodney Smith were in the business of producing large die-cast miniature toys to sell in London shops during the Christmas season. That soon changed when the pair hired tool and die maker Jack O Dell. In trying to make a school-permissible toy for his daughter that would fit inside a matchbox, O Dell scaled down the company s popular road roller even further and the rest is history. Though it was released as part of a three-model set in 1953 (the other two miniatures were a dump truck and cement mixer), the Aveling Barford Road Roller is considered the first and, not surprisingly, one of the most collectible Matchbox vehicles ever.

Matchbox cars are roughly 1:64 to scale of the vehicles being modeled. But where $35,000 (more or less) might buy you a real, road-worthy version of this Mercedes classic, the $6,765 auction price paid in 1999 for a Matchbox 27D Mercedes-Benz 230SL in apple green made it one of the most valuable Matchbox miniatures of all time.

Behold the color of die-cast gold. In 1966, the sea green Matchbox Opel Diplomat cost just 48 cents. Today, this super-rare collectible is consistently valued in the neighborhood of $9,000.

When it comes to discovering Matchbox treasures, few stories top the one involving a collector named Charlie Mack, who one day in the early 1980s stumbled upon a brown No. 30 crane truck at a neighbor’s garage sale. He supposedly bought the toy for $10 and sold it three years later for a whopping $10,000. Another renowned Matchbox collector, Jim Gallegos, who at last estimate owned over 150,000 die-cast miniatures valued at over $1.4 million, reportedly purchased a brown No. 30 crane in 2004 for $13,000.

    Cheapest Used Cars to Own

When you’re in the market and looking for the cheapest used cars to own, where do you start?

One of the best ways to calculate the cheapest used cars to own is to utilize a tool from Edmunds, the True Cost to Own pricing system. TCO, as it is called, is easy to use. Simply select the make, model, year and style and the pricing system will show you the summary and details on a five-year cost to own. These details will include depreciation, financing and maintenance costs. You’ll have to factor in costs for fuel, insurance and repairs, and any costs for taxes and fees. Still, it’s a quick way to get an overview of the particular used car you’re looking to buy.

In the meantime, we’ve gathered a few examples of some of the cheapest used cars to own, based on cost of ownership data available through several sources.

For the 2010 model year, Edmunds published the Lowest True Cost to Own list, and it’s a good place to start. Here are some of the publication’s top picks for 2010 in the sedan categories:

    • 2010 Toyota Yaris – In the Sedan Under $15,000 category, Edmunds editors selected the Toyota Yaris. While it has dependability and a wide variety of body styles, and a used Edmunds True Market Value from $11,019, the 2010 Toyota Yaris may not be right for every buyer. Looking at the five-year estimated TCO of $33,124 for the base four-door hatchback with five-speed manual transmission, may be more appealing when considering the cheapest used cars to own.
    • 2010 Honda Fit – In the Sedan $15,000 to $25,000 category, the pick here was the Honda Fit, with a used TMV from $13,237 and five-year estimated TCO of
$33,637 for the base four-door hatchback with five-speed manual transmission. Nimble handling, roomy cabin, good fuel economy and storage space are other reasons to consider the 2010 Honda Fit.
    • 2010 Mercury Milan – In the Sedan $25,000 to $35,000 category, the editors chose the Mercury Milan, sporting a modest refresh for the 2010 model year. Edmunds lists a used TMV from $21,860 and a five-year estimated TCO of $45,127 for the base sedan with four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual.
    • 2010 Lexus IS 250 – Editors chose the 2010 Lexus IS 250 for the category of Sedan $35,000 to $45,000. Edmunds editors find the Lexus IS 250 a well-built entry-level luxury sedan and list a used TMV of $25,029, while estimated five-year TCO comes in at $54,185.
    • 2010 Infiniti M35 – For the Sedan over $45,000 category, the winner was the 2010 Infiniti M35. Buyers looking for the cheapest used cars to own in a luxury sports sedan may wish to consider the 2010 Infiniti M35, with an Edmunds TMV from $28,365 and an estimated five-year TCO of $60,544.

Interestingly, in an article from Forbes (published in Road Travel magazine) and covering 2008 vehicles, the 2008 Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris were mentioned as being among the least expensive vehicles to own. The Honda Fit had a low 58 percent depreciation rate over five years, while the Toyota Yaris carried a five-year cost of ownership at $30,820.

Keep in mind that the cheapest vehicle doesn’t necessarily translate to the lowest cost to own. It’s also important to select a used vehicle with a strong resale value, which will help when you want to trade it in or sell it.
